introducing SCHMEKEL!

active between 2010 and 2014 this brooklyn based band made music focusing on themes of being trans gay and jewish, and the intersections of those things, often in a comedic way. some of my personal favourites include "youre not the only bear i fisted" "maybe shes shomer negiyah" and "i heart str8t men (but not 4 sex)".

Transmasc music is either punk rock that makes your whole house shake or a funky ukelele tune and tbh both are GREAT

okayayguys guys guess what. Its infodumping time !! last night it was about Shilpa Ray but this time its Schmekel. They were a band from 2010 to 2014 wherein they released Two albums: The Whale that Ate Jonah and Queers on Rye. The four men of the band are all Jewish and transmasc and they not only pride themselves on that, the band revolves around that and the humor that can spawn from it. Even the name of the band is a joke. "Schmekel" in Yiddish means.. "small penis", referencing their transmasc-ness. There's not a song they've made I don't like with examples being "Shark Attack" (they're asked about their top surgery scars and they respond saying the scars are. shark bites), "Hold My Yod" (... this one is WELL very nsfw but very funny im not quite sure how to explain it), and "Gay Shame" (this criticizes rainbow capitalism and cis gays who thrive on that). In my opinion they're lyrical geniuses with the way they combine Yiddish, English, queer slang, and all the jokes wihtin their music its justouggheuhghh Schmekel I Love you. Anyways they Started as a joke with the guitarist making a joke about how it'd be funny for there to be a transmasculine band called schmekel and they were all Jewish. Nogga (Nogga Schwartz, bassist) and Ricky (Ricky Riot, keyboardist and vocalist) immediately agreed with Lucian (Lucian Kahn, guitarist and vocalist) and then they found their drummer, Simcha Halpert-Hanson. And I'm just gonna add screenshots of what the New York Times article says about their personal lives and other things
