Unseasonal for no snow to be here, but at least some of the Schlumbergeras are popping around the right time despite hit/miss care.

Schlumbergera Truncata Group (Thanksgiving cactus, crab claw cactus)
My two Thanksgiving cacti must have synchronized their watches because they’ve both flowered on the very same day. Schlumbergera is a small genus with six to nine species native to South-eastern Brazil where they grow high in the trees or in small pockets of soil in rocky outcrops.
Commercially available cultivars fall into two groups, those developed from S. Truncata which have points on their leaves (hence Crab Claw cactus) and ones without these pointed projections in which the species S. Buckleyi predominates. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Truncata group flower in late October or early November, whereas the Buckleyi group flower at Christmas time and are called Christmas cactus to celebrate this fact. In it’s native Brazil,  Schlumbergera Truncata flowers in May.

Plant of the Day
Friday 26 November 2021
In the glasshouse corridor at Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK, a hanging basket of Schlumbergera × buckleyi (Christmas cactus) is flowering. This plant is a hybrid between Schlumbergera truncata and Schlumbergera russelliana, both epiphytes from the forests of Brazil. It grows best in well-drained compost in bright light but not direct sunlight and with a minimum temperature of 10°C.

Christmas Greetings from the December blooming Schlumbergeras Photographed December 7th, 10th, & 13th, 2017
Merr Christmas. Even one of my tiny little Schlumbergera seedlings is blooming this month for the occasion! Gotta say though that the Schlumbergera x buckleyi is killing it for standing out this year though, even if the flowers are smaller than the rest!

100+ Air purifying plants masterlist!
Many plants do "purify" the air. Scientifically, though, their air purifying powers makes little difference to the air we breathe because they're not effective enough. Myth busted, unfortunately.
“The scientific literature shows that indoor houseplants—as would be typically implemented in a person’s home—do very little to clean the air,” said one Elliott Gall, a prof at Portland State University who specializes in the “physics and chemistry of indoor air quality.”
This all [...] stems back to an eighties NASA study that sought to ascertain whether houseplants could filter out air pollutants known as “volatile organic compounds” or VOCs. Pretty much everything that has any scent to it releases VOCs, from the obvious (cigarettes, cleaners, disinfectants) to the less so (craft supplies, printers, shampoo).
The study, conducted by Bill Wolverton and published in 1989, concluded that houseplants could absorb VOCs.
But Waring refutes Wolverton’s findings. Though he and his colleagues found that some plants do filter VOCs better than others, none of them filter pollutants at such a manic rate that a few houseplants here and there will actually make a difference in cleaning the air in your home. In a small ten-by-ten-by-eight-foot office, Waring told the Atlantic, you would need “to put 1,000 plants in that office to have the same air-cleaning capacity of just changing over the air once per hour, which is the typical air-exchange rate in an office ventilation system,” he said. (source: Coveteur, 2019)

30.1.18. I read that If you move a cactus to a colder darker place to "rest" for a couple of months then put it back to where it was then it will flower. Giving it a try with my Easter cactus. Got a snake plant to take it's place.
