I have made my own air filter box! With macaroni duct tape and then I ran out of that and had to use blue. But it was in total about $85 for the materials (filters and box fan) so that's nice.
California smoke is bad and I have no AC, so I need my doors and windows open unless I'd like to bake. Which I don't. And since I caught COVID my lungs are rather more sensitive to the smoke then they have been in the past. This should help. Not as pretty as a store bought $200+ one but seems to be just as effective.

Marwa Zaatari, mechanical engineer member of ASHRAE epidemic task force, in the last year has heavily criticized needlepoint bipolar ionization as a method for air purification. GPS (Global Plasma Solutions), the company that sells such technology, has marketed their products as "COVID killers" without solid scientific data about the efficacy and minimizing the effects that the ions produced can have on health.
Her and other scientists have signed an open letter explaining their point with references to independent studies on the topic asking school districts in the US to invest money in technologies with proven efficacy like HEPA filters and not fall for this scam.
After this she is being sued by GPS for $180 million for defamation and she has open a gofundme to be able to pay the cost of the trial. As she also explains on her twitter profile that all remaining proceeds from the lawsuit will go to advancement of legislation to protect scientists&scientific debate, such as anti-SLAPP federal legislation.
