Schlumbergera -Truncata Group hybrid (Halloween cactus)
My Halloween cactus
This common houseplant is native to the coastal mountains of Brazil. In the Southern hemisphere this plant flowers in May and is called Flor de Maio. However, in the Northern hemisphere it is called either a Christmas cactus or a Thanksgiving cactus, reflecting it's typical flowering period. In Canada we celebrated Thanksgiving on October 9 and Christmas is a full six weeks away but my pink Schlumbergera started to bloom a week ago. It seems more appropriate to call this my Halloween cactus instead.

Unseasonal for no snow to be here, but at least some of the Schlumbergeras are popping around the right time despite hit/miss care.

December 1 | A well hung bloom
I’ve had this plant for about six years and I think it’s only flowered (not just budded) once before. Keep it going, little buddy! 🌺

They look like flying birds ♥️✨
Schlumbergera is the correct botanical name but they are frequently called Zygocactus, their former botanical name.

Schlumbergera -Truncata Group hybrid (Christmas cactus)
Poop!
I have two Schlumbergera and yesterday I posted some photos of the pink one. The 'neglected one' was very unhappy and immediately went on Poop! (formerly known as X, formerly known as Twitter) and complained. Of course, it instantly went viral and you wouldn't believe how much social media abuse I've been subjected to in the last 24 hours. Who would think that people could get so worked up over a stupid houseplant?
So, I surrender and I'm waving the white flag. Due to unprecedented popular demand, here are some photos of the 'aggrieved one'

February 11th, 2024.
Some internet stranger commented "That's not a Christmas cactus" when I posted a photo of the holiday lights at the Ethel M cactus garden last month, when I meant the term in regards to cacti decorated in Christmas lights. So here's a photo of our actual Christmas cactus in bloom.

I love how Schlumbergeras sometimes just decide they wanna flower at all non-holiday seasons. Which fair enough; their wild ancestors stick to the season of May in their native habitat anyhow.
