A group of various families and people stay in a Scottish cabin park. But don't let the mundane plot fool you. Moss creates an eclectic and thought-provoking narrative that will cause readers to find a connection with their own lives. The characters constantly have running thoughts in their head, the randomness of it all. That method of writing really reflects the uncertainness of the society we live in. As well as it is being a literary novel, Summerwater is also psychological, constantly facing the uncertainty over our world's future, questioning whether if we can adapt and accept our ever-changing world. All the judgemental statements, the challenges they face can find some connection and emotional attachment with the reader. I love the little inserts of nature that are intertwined in the story. Nature moves along while humans, people are trying to make sense of their lives. It gives readers a chance to stop and observe. Summerwater reads like a mysterious walkthrough life but encouraging us to stop and take a chance to think about our everchanging world contemplatively and theoretically. March wrap up. I had a very good reading month. I read 8 bookd and 3 graphic novels. 4 of the books are from the @womensprize longlist. 1 read is for the #booktubesffawards. Nocne czuwanie – Sarah Moss

Zaintrygowała mnie – z uwagi na osobiste doświadczenia – mała szkocka wyspa w streszczeniu na okładce. Ale otwierając tę książkę po raz pierwszy, sama właściwie nie wiedziałam, czego się spodziewać: powieści obyczajowej czy kryminalnej. I po przeczytaniu nie wiem, jak można by zakwalifikować ten typ prozy. Zetknęłam się nawet z określeniem „proza kobieca”, która to kategoria zawsze mnie trochę mierzi, ale to już temat na osobny wpis. To z pewnością powieść o tym, co dla kobiet istotne. Dziś być może szczególnie istotne, bo zewsząd płyną dobre rady i kulturowe wzorce, którym mamy sprostać. I tutaj muszę przyznać, proza Moss jest niezwykle sugestywna, bo sama lektura scen, w których główna bohaterka ma do ogarnięcia i dom, i dzieci, i swoją zawodową pracę, powoduje lekki zawrót głowy. To kolejny moment, w którym może rozgorzeć długa dyskusja na temat miejsca i sytuacji kobiet w obecnej rzeczywistości, ale nie o tym chciałam pisać. Jest zagadka i jest codzienne, choć w sumie dość egzotyczne życie – na małej, prywatnej wyspie, w surowym szkockim klimacie, w warunkach, które z miejsca dość trudno jest sobie wyobrazić.

Pierwszoosobowa narracja to świetne rozwiązanie, a jeszcze lepsze – opowieść przetykana listami z przeszłości. Dzięki temu na obraz Colsay [wyspy] składają się relacje współczesna i historyczna, obie składane przez kobiety bystre, inteligentne i jednocześnie będące tam nie do końca z własnej woli. Od początku jest dość jasne, że coś je połączy. Można podczas czytania tej książki różnie rozłożyć akcenty, czytać ją przez pryzmat zagadki lub jako opowieść o dwóch kobietach, które – choć żyją w zupełnie innych czasach – mają ze sobą coś wspólnego. I choć kryminały czytam często i bardzo je lubię, nie potrafię traktować „Nocnego czuwania” jak powieści kryminalnej – ta sfera opowieści pozostaje dla mnie jedynie tłem. O wiele bardziej wybija się tu wątek psychologiczny, związany z rozterkami Anny, głównej, współczesnej bohaterki. To niezła, stosunkowo lekka, mimo że w dużej mierze smutna, proza. Nie brakuje tu ironii, sporo jest dylematów, choć bez histerii. Ciekawie czytało mi się tę opowieść choćby z uwagi na to, że byłam kiedyś na wyspie, również szkockiej, która – choć nieco większa niż opisywana przez Moss i jednak bardziej zaludniona – w razie złych warunków pogodowych mogłaby być odcięta od świata na długie tygodnie. Przeprawa w takie miejsce, ciągła, bliska obecność wody, gdziekolwiek się pojedzie, daje wyobrażenie o uczuciach towarzyszących mieszkaniu tam na stałe. Pozwala też na wyczucie specyficznej atmosfery, jaka panuje w tej powieści.

Przyznaję, miałam chyba nieco większe oczekiwania w stosunku do samej historii. Czekałam na jakiś mocny, zniewalający zwrot akcji, na coś, co sprawi, że zagadka będzie mroczniejsza, rozwiązanie nieco bardziej skomplikowane i że będę do niego docierać po kawałku.  Wątek dziecka pogrzebanego w ogrodzie okazał się, w moim odczuciu, jedynie narzędziem do opisania emocji Anny, skłaniał ją do refleksji, o które być może nie pokusiłaby się w danym momencie życia, gdyby nie to, co znalazła na Colsay.

Koniec końców uznaję tę książkę za powieść obyczajową, z nutą psychologii i kryminalną zagadką w tle. I jak to z powieściami obyczajowymi często bywa – nie wywarła na mnie ogromnego wrażenia, ale jej klimat pozostał jeszcze kilka dni po lekturze.
