Thank you @dustjacket_fullofmonsters for the tag, I enjoyed the idea of #idealreadingday challenge. So today I'm describing to your my perfect reading day. 📖What am I reading on my idea reading day? I believe it's a newly released Sanderson's book. Or something by Daphne Du Maurie. Or it’s The Wheel of Time re-read. 🚗Where am I reading it? It's strange, but I LOVE reading in a car. Especially if it’s a beautiful day after weeks of hiking and you're riding on a calm and beautiful road. I had such an experience once. We were driving home from our road trip in Norway. We drove through central Norway, then Sweden and Finland back home. It was 3 nice days and I think I read one and a half WoT books that way. It was amazing. ☕️What do I eat and drink this day? I don’t really like eating while reading, only some snacks or pastries. But I definitely drink coffee, a lot of coffee. We have a long ride, so… it’s the right choice(coffee is always the right choice) 🌤And what about the weather? Well... I think it’s calm and quiet weather, sunny, but the wind is cool. 🎶Do you listen to something? I guess I can choose some music or ambient sounds. But it depends on the book. And in the car, the road sound is enough. I tagged some others to think about their ideal reading day, but as always, no pressure. If you like the idea of the challenge, consider yourself tagged. https://www.instagram.com/p/CdLd0rLomiL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Happy 60th Anniversary to one of the most effortlessly chic disaster-horror-animal attack films ever made. Alfred Hitchcock’s classic “The Birds” based on the short story by Daphne Du Maurier (Rebecca, Jamaica Inn, My Cousin Rachel). The film has a complicated and messy history that’s too thorny to get into now but just take a moment today to watch The Birds, the film or the ones outside. Maybe it’s a good idea to always keep and eye on the ones outside. #thebirds #hitchcock #daphnedumaurier (at Los Angeles/Hollywood California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqU0AoCOH5W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#rebecca #rebeccamovie #rebecca1940 #daphnedumaurier #alfredhitchcockpresents #alfredhitchcock #filmcult #filmculte #laurenceolivier #cinephile #cinema #movies #geekinworld #judithanderson #chefdoeuvre https://www.instagram.com/p/Cps67g2rj1V/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Click 🦜🦆Link In Bio🦆🦜 to listen to our (50th!!) episode on Hitchcock’s THE BIRDS for its 60th anniversary! “Hitchcock-A-Doodle-Do.” Matthew and Quinton return to the Master of Suspense, except this time they’re trading in shower curtains for sparrows. The Birds is an obvious choice to look at environmental concerns of the 1960s, so we discuss it anyway. Believe us when we say that if birds had marrow, we’d find it. What does The Birds have to do with Vietnam? What is Hitchcock telling us about chaos and order during one of the most tumultuous decades in recent history? And does anyone have a quarter so I can place a call in this phone booth… Swipe right for some genuine birdage. - ##horror #horrormovies #film #podcast #podcastersofinstagram #moviepodcast #horrorpodcast #visceralreactions #thebirds #alfredhitchcock #hitchcock #tippihedren #1960s #daphnedumaurier #rodtaylor #jessicatandy #whenanimalsattack #veronicacartwright #ecohorror #applepodcasts #spotifypodcast (at Audubon Zoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnrSfX2OieM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Hello everyone and happy Monday to you all! It’s a bank holiday today so I’d love to be telling you about the exciting things I’ve done but sadly I’ve been in bed most of the day! Is it chronic illness or thyroid removal related? Hard to say! 🤣 I’m going to cheer myself up by talking to you about a book haul 😁 This Edward St Aubyn series was inspired by the lovely Sarah over at @messy_aussie_reader who was reading it. The Patrick Melrose series is described as wonderful, wry and profound about an unforgettable, complex figure. It starts with Never Mind, then continues with Bad News, Some Hope, Mother’s Milk and At Last. I was delighted to receive Fearsome Fairies, Haunting Tales Of The Fae from my wonderful sister @chrissireads Taking inspiration from folk tales and medieval legends, writers of weird tales and ghost stories proved that fairies, elves, goblins and their ilk were something to be feared and respected as our ancestors did. This new collection of stories pairs strange creatures with frightening encounters to revive the fearsome past of the fairy folk. Penultimately, Rebecca is one of my favourite books and even though I have an edition, I wanted a shiny new Virago Modern Classics edition from the designer collection to look pretty on my shelves and match the others 😂 Finally, I have the beautiful Carly @stardust.and.sunflowers to thank for A Treasury Of British Folklore: Maypoles, Mandrakes and Mistletoe 😍 Carly has bought me all the books in this collection and I just love them! As well as looking at a history of folklore, this book has a directory of places you can go to see folklore alive and well today. I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments and have a great week everyone! 🤗😘 #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookhaultime #beautifulbooks #edwardstaubyn #patrickmelrose🌹 #somehope #nevermind #badnews #atlast #mothersmilk #fearsomefairies #deedeechainey #rebecca #daphnedumaurier #elizabethdearnley #atreasuryofbritishfolklore #maypolesmandrakesandmistletoe #quirkybooks #newbooksplease #arentialuckygirl #booksarethebestpresents https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch2iln7L0A3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

☀️“She knew that this was happiness, this was living as she had always wished to live.”    ❓Have you read Daphne Du Maurier’s books? Which one is your favorite? I love Daphne Du Maurier. She writes great books. Her prose is amazing, she is a master of atmosphere and suspense and her gothic thrillers are exquisite.   But this book wasn't that great for me. I think because the events of the book didn't seem real to me. The best way I can describe my thoughts about this book is this - it felt like a dream of the main character, the fantasy she had, not the real thing which happened to her. All her decisions and things she did are the way it happens in a dream, they didn’t feel like real decisions of a real person to me. And the characters she met were like someone's dream too. It is not a bad thing, but it is what it is. I think I could appreciate it more if it was told as someone's fantasy, not the real story. But the books are exactly someone's fantasies, so… I don't know. Maybe I'm a little bit harsh here.   The other problem I have with this book is the plot structure, it's rather uneven, and the pacing is a little bit off.   But there are of course the things I enjoyed aside from the prose. What I liked about this book is the atmosphere, the spirit, and the setting. It was really vivid and bright and alive before my eyes, I felt it all. So it wasn't a bad book in any way, I quite enjoyed it, it just wasn't the best Daphne Du Maurier book.   📖“Contentment is a state of mind and body when the two work in harmony, and there is no friction. The mind is at peace, and the body also. The two are sufficient to themselves. Happiness is elusive -- coming perhaps once in a life-time -- and approaching ectasy.” #daphnedumaurier #frenchmanscreek #classicalliterature https://www.instagram.com/p/Cjp7j8ZIJQu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Happy Birthday to Cornwall’s own Daphne Du Maurier. Defiant, queer, legendarily prickly, and easily one of my favorite authors of all time( seriously Rebecca is top five favorite novels). I can’t imagine where Alfred Hitchcock would be had he not adapted her work for the screen (Rebecca, Jamaica Inn, The Birds-very loosely). Nic Roeg adapted her novella Don’t Look Now (into one of my all time favorite feel-bad films). Daphne was the basis for Wendy in Peter Pan along with her cousins the tragically ill-fated Llewelyn-Davie boys (re-imagined as Peter and the Lost Boys). She doesn’t get enough credit for what a literary heavy weight she was in her own lifetime, over shadowed in curriculums by her lesser male peers I suggest people add her to their reading lists and syllabus asap. #daphnedumaurier #rebecca #queer #feminist #womeninhorror #lgbtq (at Los Angeles/Hollywood California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdfoSV1rcvl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

| My Cousin Rachel by Daphne du Maurier | ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 |
Tumblr media
While I enjoyed this book, it definitely did not have the charm or the atmosphere that I adored in Rebecca.
This story follows a young man named Phillip whose Cousin goes abroad during winter to avoid illness and on one of those trips he marries. Not long after the Cousin passes away and Rachel comes to live with Phillip.
Just like Rebecca, I definitely enjoyed the second half alot more than the first but I feel like this one fell a bit short on what I wanted from the book. While it is very interesting and intriguing at times, I felt the ending fell a bit flat.
I will admit that Daphne du Maurier definitely has a way with words and I can appreciate her writing even if I don't enjoy the story too much.
