Sapphic Angst Fest: Middle aged Lesbian ship - Berena
So, anyone out there who is looking for a middle aged wlw ship, have you seen Berena?
It was on Holby City a few years back, was a recurring storyline for years. It had everything: longing glances, friends to lovers, breaking up, getting back together, KISSES!, long distance romance, ARM WRESTLING!, and Doctor Who’s Kate Lethbridge-Stewart -Jemma Redgrave!!!!!! And it was the origin of one of my favorite phrases of all time: “sapphic angst fest”.
There are a decent number of vids of the show up on YouTube, I think you can probably piece together most of the story, and there are lots of fanvids. I was able to watch almost all of the actual show on YouTube while it was airing.
It was SO EXCITING to see that representation at the time, from 2 amazing actors - Jemma and Catherine Russell.

💞 we built this fucker stone by stone [Minmione, G, 13.3k] by elainebarrish 💞 This story is a lovely mix of growing up, war angst, and finding your soulmate along the way. Minerva is just the right amount of stern and sarcastic.
Getting to know Minerva McGonagall takes a lot of patience, even with her shade of green dark on your shoulder, even though you're sure that the matching green stains her fingertips and the palm of her hand... You wait, and you wait, and eventually, eventually, she comes around.
💞 Luck of the Draw [Petcissa, T, 10.1k] by @madetofly 💞 A fascinating take on soulmates. Petunia as a Muggle in the magical world and bonded to Narcissa is wonderfully done in this story.
After Severus Snape revealed that Lily was a witch, Petunia wasn't surprised... What she wasn't expecting was to get an invitation to Hogwarts herself. No, she's not a witch like her sister. She's something else: a soulmate. She doesn't understand exactly what that means until she gets there.
💞 Falling and Flying [Kalicia, G, 2.5k] by JoRaskoph 💞 I adore this soulmates AU. The ending is a twist, and yet not a twist at all. I love the idea that you can hear your soulmate's thoughts!
Alicia Spinnet has a lot to deal with, even before she develops a crush on Katie Bell, who most definitely isn't her soulmate.
💞 you are my symphony [Susanne, T, 2.7k] by Someone_aka_Me 💞 The imagery and concise prose makes this story a breeze to read!
Susan has a symphony growing on her ribs every time she talks to Daphne, but there's also a war to deal with.
💞 And If I Had To Choose [Pansmione, M, 3.7k] by flipflop_diva 💞 Enemies to friends to lovers with forced proximity and bits of humor sprinkled in. A great build in only 3k words.
In a world where soulmates are discovered via a type of internal explosion, Hermione is bound and determined to have nothing to do with hers for as long as she possibly can.
💞 cor aut mors [Linny, T, 3.0k] by @darkmagicalgirlwrites 💞 This story gutted me while also making me smile. It weaves through canon events so smoothly and with so much emotion.
Ginny was born without a bondmark.

Minerva learns she must travel to the year 1008 to save Hogwarts's magic. And incidentally, the soulmark on her arm indicates she met her soulmate 991 years ago. Och!

Holby Spring trailer thoughts
Ok, time for some initial thoughts angst-ridden reflections on the Spring trailer:
Serena’s impending exit:
Judging by the clip of Serena listening to a patient’s heart, I’m guessing that the person in question has received Elinor’s heart? Which would tally up with Bernie’s question in ‘I do, I do, I do’ about Elinor being on the organ donor’s register.
The surgery scene (again, looks like a possible AAU/Darwin crossover operation), may well have been pre-empted by tonight’s episode: although Jasmine turned down the chance to assist on the operation due to exhaustion, there’s no reason to suggest why Serena wouldn't ask her to assist on a prestigious op again... I’m wondering if Jasmine makes a mistake in theatre, or whether the operation merely doesn’t go to plan and Serena ends up ‘losing’ Elinor twice, cue the grief-struck meltdown and her having to be moved away from the girl in the theatre.
Jasmine then tries to comfort Serena, cue the ‘I wish it was you in the morgue’ scene? I’m wondering if this will see the end of their mentor/student relationship...
Serena effectively ‘loses’ all of her children (surrogate or blood) in this instance: Jason (referred to by Bernie as Serena’s surrogate son) saying he wants to live with Alan as “you are not the same Auntie Serena you were before”, Elinor’s heart transplant patient not making it through theatre, and the eventual collapse of the toxic maternal/substitute daughter relationship (already foreshadowed by the ‘Head Girl’ badge, the ‘you remind me of her’, and Bernie’s gentle warning to Jas from ‘Other People’s Dreams) that she has forged with Jasmine. The loss of all her ‘children’ in one go (and presumably assuming responsibility for all of their ‘losses’) is evidently enough to push Serena to the rooftop..
Having no-one left to pour her anger into or use as a distraction from coming to terms with her own grief, the depressive stage of grief is still yet to come...
However, amidst the angst, some positives:
Bernie coming to Serena’s rescue in scene which literally left my heart in my mouth when she smashed a metal door open to get to her (now, if that isn’t a visual metaphor for the emotional shutters that Serena has brought down since Elinor’s death finally being broken through by Bernie.. especially since all of their important scenes since Elinor’s death have been framed by the blinds or shutters in the AAU office...therefore hinting at the fact that Bernie is barely being let in or only seeing the glimpses that Serena is allowing her to see)
We know that Catherine Russell is coming back after What the Butler Saw, so we know that whatever happens on the roof, it won’t end in a fatality. Bernie also appears in the rest of the trailer, so it appears that whatever happens, it isn’t bad enough for Bernie to leave Holby. My guess is a final emotional outpouring where Serena finally lets Bernie help her at her weakest, where Serena will disappear off screen to recuperate, but Bernie will possibly update on how Serena is doing from time to time.
Cameron is back! Delighted to see him, as I think Bernie and Morven both need him more than ever.
Looks as if there’s going to be lots of ward-juggling going on! Ollie coming down to AAU and Jas going back to Darwin in a swap, but at some point Jas and Ollie end up in bed together (that’s going to blow up nicely, especially as Zosia is pregnant!) and Ric is back and now on AAU (co-leading with Bernie whilst Serena is off? Guessing by the fact that the AAU lot are all in the bar with Ric, I’m guessing so).
I’d love to know what everyone else thinks!

Hi Lani!! I know u’ve written facesitting so I will instead ask if u’ve ever written anything about sirius 🤭
Well hello Caitie!
I do indeed have facesitting fics and I also have Sirius fics. Sadly, I do not have the two combined (yet).
For Sirius, I usually default to Wolfstar so I kind of stick them in the background of a lot of my other fics but I do have a Halloween Wolfstar fic and also a Wolfstar-Jeddy time fuckery fic (you'll see what I mean).

So they take the knife and twist it in our innards with John Donne's poetry. Well. Fuck you Holby City writers I can make myself into a bottomless angst well with just cuts of Serena and Bernie looking at each other not finishing sentences with this accompanying soundtrack.
