Any good Chinese LGBT drama/ movie recommendations? And where to watch it?
Hmmm I thought I would have a lengthy list of recommendations but limited to just Chinese-language films/dramas, and ones that I would actually recommend, I realise that my list is a lot shorter 😅.
These are pretty much all going to be gay (mlm). Sorry for the lack of diversity 😔. Summaries are taken from Letterboxd for the most part.
Film Recs
(in chronological order)
霸王别姬 || Farewell My Concubine (1993) - China (mainland), Hong Kong - dir. Chen Kaige
Personal rating: 4/5 || [HQ link, EN subs]
Abandoned by his prostitute mother in 1920, Douzi was raised by a theater troupe. There he meets Shitou and over the following years the two develop an act entitled “Farewell My Concubine” that brings them fame and fortune. When Shitou marries Juxian, Douzi becomes jealous, the beginnings of the acting duo’s explosive breakup and tragic fall take root.
东宫西宫 || East Palace, West Palace (1996) - China (mainland) - dir. Zhang Yuan
Personal rating: 4/5
A heterosexual Beijing policeman and a young homosexual challenge each other’s sexuality.

Personal rating: 4/5 || [link, ZH subs]
Set in Hong Kong and China in the early 1900s, an older Wan and Wai travel through China in search of Foon, Wan's true love. Wai, whose on-and-off status with her boyfriend leads her into a struggle with self-identity, slowly learns about the life of the aging Wan. Through flashbacks, we learn about Wan in her early days and Foon, who move in and out of each other's lives.
美少年之恋 || Bishonen (1998) - Hong Kong - dir. Yonfan
Personal rating: 3/5 ~ 3.5/5 (I flipflop on this lol)
Jet is a gay hustler who one night spots a young man walking with a woman, and falls for him instantly. He does some research, and discovers that the man is called Sam, and is an apparently straight policeman.
蓝宇 || Lan Yu (2001) - China (mainland) - dir. Stanley Kwan
Personal rating: 5/5 || [HQ Link EN subs] [HQ link, ZH subs] - Bear in mind these are both the cut version of the movie. There are about 4 scenes cut from this version, which is unfortunately the most easily found.
A love story between a country boy in Beijing to study and a wealthy businessman set against the backdrop of the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident.
春风沉醉的夜晚 || Spring Fever (2009) - China (mainland) - dir. Lou Ye
Personal rating: 3/5
Hired to spy on a philandering husband, Luo Haitao soon becomes entangled in a clandestine affair with the other man. Along with Luo’s girlfriend, they succumb to the delirium of drunken nights, but how long can their tryst last?
谁先爱上他的 || Dear Ex (2018) - Taiwan - dir. Mag Hsu, Chih-yen Hsu
Personal rating: 4/5 || [HD link, EN sub]
When Sanlian’s ex-husband passes away, she discovers he has altered his insurance policy, cutting out their son in favor of a stranger named Jay.
叔・叔 || Twilight’s Kiss (2019) - Hong Kong - dir. Ray Leung
Personal rating: 3.5/5 || [HD link, EN subs]
One day Pak, a taxi driver who refuses to retire, meets Hoi, a retired single father, in a park. Although both are secretly gay, they are proud of the families they have created through hard work and determination. Yet in that brief initial encounter, something is unleashed in them which had been suppressed for so many years. As both men recount and recall their personal histories, they also contemplate a possible future together.
刻在你心底的名字 || Your Name Engraved Herein (2020) - Taiwan - dir. Liu Kuang-hui
Personal rating: 3.5/5
In 1987, as martial law ends in Taiwan, Jia-han and Birdy fall in love amid family pressure, homophobia and social stigma.
Extra mentions (haven't watched these ones yet but they have decent reviews):
夜奔 || Fleeing by Night (2000) - China (mainland)
Saving Face (2004) - U.S.A
盛夏光年 || Eternal Summer (2006) - Taiwan
Drama Recs
Most of the LGBT dramas I've watched are trash or censored, sorry to say, and I tend to watch movies over dramas, so what's left for me to recommend is just from the HIStory (Linked: wiki with summaries) Taiwanese webdrama anthology:
HIStory1: My Hero (PR: 3/5)
HIStory1: Obsession (PR: 3/5)
History2: Crossing the Line (PR: 3.5/5)
History3: Trapped (PR: 3.5/5)

GJ and ZZH Updates — September 25-October 1
<<< previous week || all posts || following week >>>
This is part of a weekly series collecting updates from and relating to Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan.
This post is not wholly comprehensive and is intended as an overview, links provided lead to further details. Dates are in accordance with China Standard Time, the organization is chronological. My own biases on some things are reflected here. Anything I include that is not concretely known is indicated as such, and you’re welcome to do your own research and draw your own conclusions as you see fit. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or additions. :)
[Glossary of names and terms] [Masterlist of my posts about the situation with Zhang Zhehan]
09-25 → Gong Jun posted a douyin of himself. Caption: “Shock! It turned out to be...”
09-26 → Kangshifu posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.
→ ELLE magazine posted a trailer for the short film Guardian of Alpine Plants. The caption included, “Gong Jun said: ‘I also feel that the things I love will not be consumed in the process of working hard for them. There will always be problems and even burnout in the process of climbing, but I always feel that there are more areas worth exploring.’ This day is different from every day in the city, Gong Jun described it as feeling like entering another world.”
→ Zhang Zhehan requested to dissolve a company he established in 2019. In the paperwork, it is listed that the company is not under investigation, owed any debts, involved in any lawsuits, or listed as a bad creditor, and it is up to date on its taxes. This is the first news we’ve had about him himself since January!
Tumblr media
This directly contradicts Xie Yihua and co.’s claims that Zhang Zhehan’s name is not in the brand’s paperwork because his assets have been frozen, that he is not psychologically able to handle his own business affairs, and/or that he has signed over power of attorney to Xie Yihua. Instagram believers responded by saying that this legal document publicly available on a government website with a signature that actually matches his is fake.
09-27 → ELLE magazine posted nine photos of Gong Jun from Guardian of Alpine Plants.
→ Kuaikan, ELLE magazine (English subbed), and the Shangri-La Alpine Botanical Garden all posted the full Guardian of Alpine Plants short film. Gong Jun’s studio reposted it from Kuaikan with the added caption: “Follow boss @ Gong Jun Simon into Shangri-La, listen to the stories of the guardians of alpine plants, and feel the charm of nature.” Gong Jun reposted it from the Botanical Garden’s account, with the added caption: “Walking in Shangri-La, we are amazed at the majesty of the mountains and the tenacity of the flowers and plants. On this beautiful planet, every tiny life deserves to be respected and guarded.”
This was filmed in early to mid-June in Shangri-La, northeastern Yunnan. It was publicly displayed on a large 3D screen outside the Wuhan Sanlian bookstore, and is scheduled to continue to do so until 10-07.
Tumblr media
→ ELLE posted an article to their WeChat about the short film. [translation]
09-28 → The Shangri-La Alpine Botanical Garden made a post expressing surprise and thanks for the surge in public support garnered from the short film.
→ Kangshifu posted an illustrated ad featuring Gong Jun.
→ Gong Jun posted a promotional video for Downy to his Xiao Hong Shu.
09-29 → Colgate posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.
→ The Instagram posted 10 wildly different photos of “Zhang Zhehan”, several of which include a kitten that we can only hope will be treated better than Kele.
→ The NRTA posted a list of movies and shows that showcare Chinese core values and the “China dream”, which included Gong Jun’s drama The Flaming Heart.
→ Kangshifu posted an illustrated ad featuring Gong Jun.
→ Gong Jun’s studio posted his schedule for October: only drama filming, no public schedule. Caption: “📣Boss @ Gong Jun Simon's October schedule is here! The small studio wishes everyone a happy National Day in advance and a happy holiday~” BGM is eight by IU (feat. Suga) (check the lyrics). [background about the song] Fan Observation: 18:00 timestamp; 10-18 was the date of Zhang Zhehan’s 2020 I Met Me mini-concert, a name that referenced the origin of soulmates from Plato’s Symposium. On 2020-09-29, Gong Jun posted a douyin of his reflection in a mirror with Making a Lover by SS501 as the BGM. [full candy breakdown]
→ Gong Jun’s studio posted the two photos used in the schedule. Caption: “It’s here it’s here”
09-30 → Gong Jun reposted a post by CCTV for Martyrs’ Day with the added caption, “Deeply remembered! Salute to the people's heroes!” His studio did the same, caption: “Don't forget the legacy of the martyrs and pay tribute to the people's heroes!”
→ Kangshifu posted three illustrated ads featuring Gong Jun.
→ 361° posted two photo ads featuring Gong Jun.
10-01 (China National Day, start of Golden Week) → Just after midnight, Gong Jun reposted a post by CCTV for National Day with the added caption, “I wish my dear motherland prosperity ♥” His studio did the same, caption, “The country is peaceful and the people are safe, China is splendid! Celebrate the 73rd anniversary of the founding of New China!“
→ Also just after midnight, the Instagram posted two photos of “Zhang Zhehan” with white hair and a photo of a windmill. Fan Observations: -  The white hair is possibly meant to shade the 3D artist YDS, who has art of Zhang Zhehan with white hair as her pfp and has done other such art. Back in the spring, YDS was approached by Sophie and co. who tried to coerce her into helping them, and she has subsequently been repeatedly attacked by them for refusing. The day before this, she posted two new pictures inspired by Zhang Zhehan’s song When The Glaciers Disappear and admonished Xie Yihua and co. for capitalizing off the song without his permission. Update 10-04: YDS was accused by solos masquerading as CPFs to be involved in the making of the Instagram photos.  -  The windmill looks very similar to the one in the pfp used by 不想匿名, a Zhihu account that some CPFs think might be Zhang Zhehan and/or Gong Jun (it’s the account that posted the frog picture at the end of July). The presumption is that the Instagram is trying to discredit this account.
→ 361° posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.
→ Hsu Fu Chi posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.
→ Kangshifu posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.
→ The brand’s Weibo supertopic was deleted and its “ootd” tag was wiped citing “relevant laws, regulations and policies”. [screenshots] Update 10-04: The supertopic returned but is unavailable.
Additional Reading: → Flora’s daily fan news thread → Douyin recently added a reporting option for video fraud specifically aimed at combatting deepfakes, as they are illegal in China under image use laws. Zhang Sanjian videos, including the 07-17 “fanmeet” videos, have been removed without fail when they’re reported for this.

TGCF donghua Episode 6 Thoughts (SPOILERS!)
This episode felt like a constant one-upmanship of cuteness and romance: just when I thought things can't get any cuter or more romantic, the donghua team was pretty much like, hold my beer.
First there was this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love that Dianxia answered simply, not bothering to explain the situation further to avoid any misunderstanding, as if it was the most normal and casual thing in the world, when in more tropey scenarios he would've overexplained with fits and stammers. That reassuring smile he directed at San Lang at the end there was especially sweet. Fu Yao seemed a bit jealous though or maybe he's just being overprotective... can't wait to find out what that's all about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok first of all San Lang looked so damn good with the hood, but then even better with Dianxia's hat because it's so adorable!
Tumblr media
Although once again his reaction puzzles me: is it sadness, discomfort or horniness that he's trying to control and hence he has to immediately break contact with Xie Lian all the time? But then we have moments like this:
Tumblr media
A total indirect kiss that San Lang couldn't wait to reciprocate. 😂 And also, I can't say this enough: I love watching San Lang watch Xie Lian. He's just so enamored; it's mesmerizing.
And finally as if all of these adorable and sweet moments weren't already enough, this happened:
That was seriously such freaking romantic moment I actually teared up. Good God. It was so unbelievably beautiful and perfect!! Won the episode as far as I'm concerned.
Strangely enough, for an episode that features so many winning moments, the episode itself was probably the most imperfect so far since there were a number of technical gaffes. There were a couple of times where the dialogue obviously didn't match the characters' lips or even the character moving their lips wasn't even the one speaking.
Tumblr media
Nan Feng's lips were still moving even though Dianxia was the one speaking.
Tumblr media
Same thing happened here, Dianxia was the one asking the question even though it was San Lang's mouth that was moving. Actually in that same scene Dianxia's mouth kept on opening and closing like a little fish. It was bizarre. I guess they might have rewritten dialogue while the dubbing was being done so that's why some of the words didn't match the characters' lip movements, but these weren't even spicey or necessarily important lines so why would there even be a need for last minute rewrites?
These errors didn't take away from my enjoyment of the episode at all, all the romance aside, the Crescent mystery is interesting and I can't wait to meet those two new characters in the dust storm (I think I can guess who they are even if I don't actually KNOW them yet). Still, I do hope this will be the only episode featuring so many blatant mistakes. HuaLian deserves perfection.
