The Best of the Companions
ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The best of this nation after its Prophet are Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, and if I had wanted I would have told you of the third.” Who Are Ahl al-Sunnah?
And Ibn Ḥazm said in al-Faṣl 2/113: وقال ابن حزم في الفصل (ج2: ص113): “And Ahl al-Sunnah, those whom we will mention, are the people of Truth, وأهل السنة الذين نذكرهم أهل الحق، and those who oppose them are the people of innovation, ومن عداهم فأهل البدعة، [and so Ahl al-Sunnah] are: The Ṣaḥābah (ie: Companions), and everyone who walked their path among al-tābiʿīn (ie: students of the Companions), فإنهم الصحابة وكل من سلك نهجهم من خيار التابعين، Thereafter the Aṣḥāb al-Ḥadīth, ثم أصحاب الحديث، as well as those who followed them among al-fuqahāʾ, generation after generation until our time today, ومن تبعهم من الفقهاء جيلاً فجيلاً إلى يومنا هذا، along with al-ʿawām (ie: the common Muslims) who emulated them in the east of the earth and the west.”

The face is one the most essential things to be covered
Shaykh Muhammad al-Saalih Al-‘Uthaymeen rahimahullah said:
“The hijāb prescribed in Sharī’ah means that a woman should cover everything that it is haraam for her to show, i.e., she should cover that which it is obligatory for her to cover, first and foremost of which is the face, because it is the focus of temptation and desire.
A woman is obliged to cover her face in front of anyone who is not her mahram (blood relative to whom marriage is forbidden). From this we learn that the face is the most essential thing to be covered. There is evidence from the Book of Allāh and the Sunnah of His Prophet ﷺ and the views of the Sahaabah and the imams and scholars of Islam, which indicates that women are obliged to cover all of their bodies in front of those who are not their mahrams.”

Allah calls Himself An-Naseer— The Helper— on five occasions in the Quran. An-Naseer is the one who helps and supports His slaves. He is the One who backs, strengthens, defends, and aids the believers, and there is no helper but Him!
The Helper, the One who supports and defends
Naseer comes from the root noon-saad-raa, which points to four  main meanings. The first main meaning is to help or give support and the second to defend a cause. The third main meaning is to grant victory or let triumph. The fourth is to baptize or make Christian.
This root appears 158 times in the Quran in 10 derived forms. Examples of these forms are yansuru (“He helps”), yantasiroona (“help or defend themselves”), al nasru (“the victory”), nasaaraa (“Christians”) and naasireena (“helpers).
Linguistically, there are different words used in the Quran referring to kinds of help. Examples are ista’anah (linked to Allah’s beautiful Name Al-Musta’aan) which means all sorts of help, ayada, az’ara, madda etcetera. The noun nasr includes help against an oppressor and help when wanting to overpower someone else.
Nasrullaah is the help of Allah ‘azza wa jall which cannot be equalled to any other kind of help.  Allah is An-Naseer, He is the ultimate Helper, Supporter and Defender of His believing slaves.
An-Naseer Himself says: . . . He is your protector; and excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper [Quran, 22:78] … And Allah is most knowing of your enemies; and sufficient is Allah as an ally, and sufficient is Allah as a helper [Quran, 4:45] … And thus have We made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals. But sufficient is your Lord as a guide and a helper [Quran, 25:31] and … But if they turn away – then know that Allah is your protector. Excellent is the protector, and Excellent is the helper [Quran, 8:40]
Different types of victory
An-Naseer says: But Allah is your protector, and He is the best of helpers [Quran, 3:150] The help or victory (nasr) of Allah ‘azza wa jall is of different types described by the scholars.
One type is the victory that is deserved; it comes with a price, which is faith and preparation. For example the victory of worthiness of the sahaabah at the battle of Badr. This is the type of victory for the believer who obeys Allah ‘azza wa jall and wins.
The second type is a victory that is not deserved by the faith and obedient behaviour of a certain group, but Allah ‘azza wa jall decrees victory for them according to His wisdom in that situation.
The third type is the principal victory, which might not be seen as victory by others, but in reality indicates the true victory of a human being. An example are the believers in the story of the Ditch described in surah Al-Burooj, who were killed in masses. And the hairdresser of the daughter Fir’awn of whom her children and herself were thrown in boiling oil. How did they win? They stood by their belief in Allah ‘azza wa jall and principles and gained the ultimate victory: the pleasure and reward of An-Naseer for the martyrs with the highest Paradise.
How can you live by this name?
1. Aid Allah’s cause.
An-Naseer says: If Allah should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allah let the believers rely [Quran, 3:160]. Help in Allah’s cause by defending Islam, spread the message of the Quran and standing by your Islamic principle. Teach the children to stand up for the truth by showing them the correct role models and hero’s of Islam, both contemporary and from the past. The Muslim nation is in need of those who stick to the principles of Islam. So get close to the Quran and inspire others to, use it as a guidance in your actions and the help of Allah will come. O you who believe! If you help (in the cause of) Allah, He will help you, and make your foothold firm [Quran, 47:7]
2. Help your brothers and sisters.
As part of a hadith recorded by Muslim, the Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: …Allah is helping the servant as long as the servant is helping his brother. The point is to look out actively where you can help your brothers and sisters so you will get the help of An-Naseer in return. Sometimes you can help someone financially by paying their debts, spiritually by giving them emotional support and advice or even by your reputation or authority. Use all the means An-Naseer gave you to help those in need!
3. Don’t be lazy. Sometimes people get frustrated and imagine that Allah will not help them. Never mistrust Allah and His help! To deserve the help from An-Naseer you must strongly believe in Him and His attributes. Take your inspiration from Musa ‘alayhi sallam: And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, “Indeed, we are to be overtaken!
[Moses] said, No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me [Quran, 26:61-62] But don’t just have faith alone without action. You need to prepare as well; don’t be lazy and expect the support of Allah to come! So think well of Allah, believe in Him and do whatever you can in taking pre-cautions.
4. Know help comes from Allah alone. Never think you were helped in a certain situation, just because you made the right decision or because you were so skilful. Don’t say “I did this and succeeded”, rather say “Allah is my Helper and all success comes from Him alone”!
A subtle way An-Naseer helps you is when He fills your heart with happiness and security when you make a right decision and He fills it with anxiety and pessimism when you make a wrong decision. So recognize the help of Allah in your life and be grateful.
5. Live by Surah An-Nasr. Surah An-Nasr [Quran 110] or the Victory, teaches you many lessons: apply them! This surah indicates the successfull spread of Islam, the near-approaching death of the Prophet and describes etiquettes to observe after gaining victory after going through lots of struggles. Instead of being arrogant, you should praise Allah, thank Him and seek His forgiveness.  So next time you gain something or succeed after a challenge; say subhanAllah, alhamdulillah and astaghfirullah from the heart!
6. Call on An-Naseer.
How many times are people diagnosed with fatal diseases, doctors pronounce no hope and they are completely healed by the help of Allah? Call for the help of An-Naseer alone – even though He mght send His help through other people or even objects –  and He can help you defeat any disease, enemy or any struggle you are dealing with, mentally, psychically or materially!
O Allah, An-Naseer we know that You are the only Helper. Make us of those who aid Your cause and help our brothers and sisters so we receive Your help in return. Make us strong in our belief in Your help and active in seeking it and make us realize You are the only source of help and be grateful for it. Grant us victory and success in this life and most importantly the ultimate victory of Jannatul Firdaws, ameen!

The Muslim’s attitude:
* When the Muslim hears a Command from Allaah and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم, then he should carry it out without hesitation to the best of his ability.
* When the Muslim hears about a prohibition, then he should shun it without having any second thoughts.
* Don’t wait asking if it is Waajib or Mustahab or if it is Makrooh or Haraam.
Shaikh Muhammad ibn Saaleh al-`Uthaimeen رحمه الله said:
“Second point: Obeying his صلى الله عليه وسلم command and not hesitating in carrying it out due to the saying of Allaah تعالى:
{It is not for a Believer, man or woman, when Allaah and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allaah and His Messenger, he has indeed strayed in a plain error.} [Surah al-Ahzaab (33): 36]
That is why I say: That which is an error is that some people whenever a command comes to him from Allaah and His Messenger, he begins to inquire about it. So he says: “Is this command Waajib (obligatory) or is it Mustahab (recommended)?” as many people say today. This is a question which must be thrown out and not asked because the Sahaabah (Companions of the Messenger) رضي الله عنهم whenever the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم commanded them with something, they never said: “O Messenger of Allaah! Is this command Waajib or is it Mustahab or other than that?” Rather they acted and had conviction without even asking.
Thus we say: Do not question. Rather upon you is to act. If you bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah then do that which he has commanded you to do.
However in a situation where a person has fallen into an issue and an act of disobedience, then in this case he has the right to ask: “Is this obligatory or non-obligatory?” That's because if it was obligatory then he must repent from it because he has disobeyed. And if it was not obligatory then his affair is easy.”

Collective Fasting is NOT from the Sunnah.
That's not what the Prophet ﷺ and the Sahaabah did when they were faced with persecution from the disbelievers.
It is Sunnah is to fast Every Thursday.
If you are fasting, fast for the sake of Allaah irrespective of whether other people are fasting or not.
Be Careful Do Not Fall Into Violations Because Of Your Emotions.

And Allah says concerning the Ansaar (interpretation of the meaning):
“And those who, before them, had homes (in Al-Madinah) and had adopted the Faith, love those who emigrate to them, and have no jealousy in their breasts for that which they have been given (from the booty of Banee An-Nadeer), and give them (emigrants) preference over themselves, even though they were in need of that” [al-Hashr 59:9].
And Allah says concerning the believers who come after them (interpretation of the meaning):
“And those who came after them say: Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith, and put not in our hearts any hatred against those who have believed. Our Lord! You are indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful” [al-Hashr 59:10].
With regard to what happened among the Sahaabah of differences of opinion and fighting, we should refrain from discussing it, whilst believing that they are the best of the ummah and loving them and approving of them. This opinion has been repeatedly stated by Ahl as-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa‘ah.
‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azeez (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about ‘Ali and ‘Uthmaan, and the battles of the Camel and Siffeen, and what happened among them. He said: That is blood that Allah caused me to have no hand in shedding, and I do not want to dip my tongue in it (by talking about it). at-Tabaqaat al-Kubra, 5/394
A man asked Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal about what happened between ‘Ali and Mu‘aawiyah, and he turned away from him. It was said to him: O Abu ‘Abdullah, he is a man from Banu Haashim. He turned to him and said: Recite: “That was a nation who has passed away. They shall receive the reward of what they earned and you of what you earn. And you will not be asked of what they used to do” [al-Baqarah 2:134].
Manaaqib al-Imam Ahmad by Ibn al-Jawzi, p. 126
Imam Ahmad also said, after it was said to him: What do you say about what happened between ‘Ali and Mu‘aawiyah? He said: I do not say anything about them except what is best.
Manaaqib al-Imam Ahmad by Ibn al-Jawzi, p. 164

“Do you think you will enter the same Jannah of Bilaal, Abu Bakr, Khaalid, Umar, Hafsah and Sumayyah without doing the work they did?
Do you think just because I took my Shahaadah and I was born into Islam, I am granted a free shuttle pass into Firdaws without some sleepless nights of worship? It is amazing to read in the books that detail the biographies of the Salaf, statements like they said about so and so that if you were to tell him that he would die tomorrow, there is nothing he could fit in his schedule of Ibaadah. Wallahi, numerous times I read it. Every day of their lives was as if they are going to die that day or the following day.
You may say we cannot be like them. Wallahil-‘Adheem it is possible. Sahaabah did not get revelation and neither did we. Tabi'een did not see the one who got revelation and neither did we. They were determined, we are not. That is the problem right there.
It is difficult yes, impossible? No.”

The Belief of the Early Shī'ah
Ibn Shawḏab narrates from al-Layth b. Abī Salim who said: “I encountered the early Shīʿah in al-Kūfah. Not a single one of them gave preference to ʿAlī over Abū Bakr and ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them all). وقال ابن شوذب، عن ليث، قال: أدركت الشيعة الاولى بالكوفة، وما يفضلون على أبي بكر وعمر أحدا. al-Ḏahabī, Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl 3/421 الذهبي، ميزان الاعتدال ٣/٤٢١ https://shamela.ws/book/1692/1779 @ilmtest [https://t.me/ilmtest]

Ponder and Reflect
Advice of Hadhrat Luqmaan عليه السّلام to his son :
"Oh my son! This world is a deep ocean in which numerous people have drowned. In this ocean of the world make Taqwa your ship; Fill it with Imaan and let it's sail be Tawakkul (Trust) on Allah. Then perhaps, you may be saved from the disasters of the world. Without this, Salvation is not possible."
What lessons can we take from this profound advice of Hadhrat Luqmaan
We know that this life is filled with many trails and temptations, we were commanded to be purified through all these tests in this worldy life, so that we could meet our Sustainer on the Day of Qiyaamah.
Now to elaborate more on the above advice :
"To have Taqwa (to be God fearing) in this deep ocean of life would prevent us from openly disobeying Allah; we would become conscious of the fact that Allah is Omnipresent. This would make it easy for us to stay afloat throughout this life. Examples can be taken from the lives of the Ambiyaa, Sahaabah, or Awliyaa."
Which brings us to "Tawakkul", I cannot stress enough how important this is in life. I don't mean just uttering the words "Hasbiyallaahu wa ni'mal wa'keel" or merely saying" meaning - You are sufficient for me and the best of guardians" but saying it with the heart, believing that .."My Lord, The Most High, will help me through this difficult situation - He will grant me peace and tranquility in my heart - He is the only I should depend etc.."
Let's take another example at the most frequently mentioned prophet in the Quraan, Musa عليه السّلام. His story is such an amazing and inspirational onez that every time you read a part of it, you will always find comfort in it. Through all his difficulties, Allah was always there to assist him and that's why I would like to mention this..
When Musa عليه السّلام was feeling desperate, lost and in dispare. It was at the time when he fled from Egypt to Madyan, he saved an Israelite resulting in the death of a coptic, and sought refuge under a tree.
He sat under the tree for while, he had no home, no family and no food and at this moment Allah inspired him with this beautiful du'aa :
رَبِّ اِنُّيْ لِماَ اَنْزَلْتَ اِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيْرّ
"My Lord, Indeed I am need of any good that you will send me "
Musa عليه السّلام's du'aa was answered and all his stress, worry and anxiety was removed. Keep in mind that he didn't ask Allah for anything specific and yet he was always pleased with whatever Allah gave him, Subahaanallah! What a powerful du'aa.
So just as Musa عليه السّلام made du'aa to Allah sincerely and had firm conviction and tawakkul in Allah, at the time of any difficulty or calamity in our deep ocean of life, we should earnestly supplicate to the Only being (الْ قادِر - The one who's in control over everything), with firm conviction that He can and will definitely assist us at our time our need.
May Allah grant you tawfeeq and firm conviction in Him and May make it easy for any difficulty or hardships you are going through, May you be rewarded with 'aafiyah and khair in this world and the Hereafter for your enduring patience, آمين.

The one among you who wakes up secure in his property, healthy in his body and has his food for the day, it is as if the whole world were brought to him
Salamah ibn ‘Ubayd-Allah ibn Mihsan al-Khatmi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from his father, who met the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
مَنْ أَصْبَحَ مِنْكُمْ آمِنًا فِي سِرْبِهِ ، مُعَافً فِي جَسَدِهِ ، عِنْدَهُ قُوتُ يَوْمِهِ ، فَكَأَنَّمَا حِيزَتْ لَهُ الدُّنْيَا
“The one among you who wakes up secure in his property, healthy in his body and has his food for the day, it is as if the whole world were brought to him.”
Narrated by al-Bukhaari in al-Adab al-Mufrad (no. 300) and by al-Tirmidhi in al-Sunan (2346). He said: It is hasan ghareeb.
Shaykh al-Albaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, after narrating the hadeeth from a number of the Sahaabah: To sum up, the hadeeth is hasan in sha Allaah, when taking into account the hadeeths of al-Ansaari and Ibn ‘Umar. And Allaah knows best. End quote. Al-Silsilah al-Saheehah (no. 2318).

Allah calls Himself Al-Qayyoom— The Sustainer, The Self-Subsisting— on three occasions in the Quran. Al-Qayyoom is the One who is self-existing while every being exists through Him and because of Him. He is completely free of any dependence on anything else, while the whole creation depends entirely on Him!
The Self-Existing, The All-Sustaining
Qayyoom comes from the root qaaf-waw-meem, which points to five main meanings. The first meaning is to stand or to rise up. The second main meaning is to be or begin, the third to be ongoing and to exist. The fourth main meaning is to be founded or to be built on and the fifth is to manage and to make right.
This root appears 660 times in the Quran in 22 derived forms. Examples of these forms are qaamoo (“they stand”), aqeemoo (“establish”), istaqaamoo (“remain firm”), al qawma (” the people”) and al qiyaamah (“the Resurrection”).
Al-Qayyoom comes always in combination with the beautiful name Al-Hayy in the Quran, with Al-Hayy referring to the attribute of everlasting life and Al-Qayyoom signifying the attribute of self-existing life. Al-Qayyoom is the One who established Himself on His own and is the foundation upon which all things exist. He is the One who sustains and manages the complete creation and at the same time is without any need of any type of sustenance Himself!
Al-Qayyoom Himself says: . . . Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence [Quran,2:255] And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. And he will have failed who carries injustice [Quran, 20:111]
The beautiful concept of qiyaam
Al-Qayyoom is among the greatest of the names of Allah ‘azza wajal and its origin is the word al-qiyaam. From this root a few of the most important concepts of Islam evolve. The iqaamah, is the call just before the obligatory prayer is established. In our prayer we recite the Quran in the standing position (qiyaam); we do not recite Quran in the sitting position, nor during our ruku (bowing), nor during our prostration. Great importance has the night prayer for the believer, which is referred to as qiyaam ul layl. True believers are adorned with istaqaamah (to remain firm) on the straight path of Islam (siraatul mustaqeem) and ultimately we will all be brought in front of Al-Qayyoom on the Day of Standing, Yawm ul Qiyaamah.
How Can You Live By This Name?
1. Establish salah.
Aqeemoo as-salah! Al-Qayyoom instructs you many times in the Quran to establish the prayer. But do you really establish your salah in your daily life, or do you fit your prayers around your daily routine?  One of the sahaabah asked: “What is the thing that Allah loves most?” The Prophet said: “The thing that Allah loves most is when his people pray salah on time.” [Al-Bukharee] Fit your daily activities around your salah and not your salah around your daily activities. Focus on praying your salah on time for a week and see the difference in your emaan!
2. Recite surah Al-Ikhlaas often.
This surah contains a beautiful description of Allah, His Oneness and His self-existing and sustaining attributes . The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam heard a man reciting ‘Qul huwa Allaahu ahad,’ and said, “It is his right.’ They asked, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, what is his right?’ He said, ‘Paradise is his right.’ [ Ahmad] He salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam also said: “Whoever recites Qul huwa Allaahu ahad ten times, Allaah will build for him a house in Paradise.” [Saheeh al-Jaami’ al-Sagheer] So recite it whenever you can: whenever you have a spare moment, fill it with recitation of surah al-Ikhlaas!
3. Help sustain the needy.
The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: If you love the poor and bring them near you . . . Allah will bring you near Him on the Day of Resurrection.[At-Tirmidhi]
4. Humble yourself.
We have no reason to ever be arrogant, and this name should humble us.  When you were born your parents needed to do everything for you; you could not even sit by yourself. As you grow, developing your intellect and body, you become less dependent on your parents. Then your body and mind start decreasing in strength, and you go back to the beginning where others need to take care of you again. Even when you feel strong, still remember you are completely dependant on Al-Qayyoom.
5. Help in the cause of Islam.
Even though Al-Qayyoom does not need any of us, nor does He need food, drink or sleep, He made you a beautiful promise in the Quran: O you who believe! If you “help Allah,” He will help you. [Quran, 47:7] This means you should do your best to help in the cause of Allah’s Deen, for Al-Qayyoom is the One Who is in full charge of all things. Ask Him to make you of those who help the Deen by spreading the message of the Quran, teaching and helping others.
6. Think about the Day of Standing.
The Prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, You will surely stand before Allah, no screen between Him and you, no interpreter to translate for you. Then He will say, ‘Did I not bring you wealth?’ He will say, ‘Yes.’ Then He will say, ‘Did I not send you a Messenger?’ He will say, ‘Yes.’ Then he will look to his right and left and see nothing but Hell. So protect yourselves from it even with half a date (in charity), and if not then with a kind word. [Al-Bukharee] Daily remind yourself about this moment and make sure you do a deed of charity each day, even if it’s a kind word to someone!
7. Stand in the night.
The best prayer after the obligatory ones is the night prayer [Muslim]. Abu Sulaimaan Ad-Daaraanie said, Those who pray in the night enjoy when they are observing their night prayer more than what the people of pastime and fun enjoy from their pastime. If not because of the night, I would not have loved to remain in this world.  When Umar was dying, he said I do not grieve on anything of this life except the night prayer. Some people think only those who have strong emaan can pray and they are not good enough, but in fact qiyaam ul layl is the opportunity for those who feel far away from Allah to become closer to Him, so go for it and motivate others to gain extra reward!
Wallahu ta’alaa ‘alem.
O Allah, Al-Qayyoom, we know that You are the One who is self-existing and sustaining all.  Bless us with humility in our worship and dealing with others and make us of those who help the needy and strive in the cause of Islam. Guide us in truly establishing the prayer in our lives, enable us to practice qiyaam ul layl, often make us remember standing before You and give us a longing to meet You and actions that bring us closer to You, ameen!

*A Bidah In The Month of Rajab*
*What do the scholars of Islam say about this so-called Laylatul Raghaa’ib?*
Imaam An-Nawawi [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “The well-known Salaah (prayer) that is known as Salaatul Raghaa’ib [the Raghaa’ib prayer] – which consists of twelve Rak’ats and is performed between Maghrib and Isha on the night before the first Friday in the month of Rajab and the hundred Rak’ats performed on the night of the 15th of Shabaan – are two religious innovations. They are repugnant and evil [i.e. becauae they are not from the acts of worship legislated in the Islamic legislation] and one should neither be deceived due to their mention in the book Quwwatul Quloob and Ihyaa Uloom Ad-Deen nor due to their mention in narrations, because all of that Iis false. And do not be deceived by some of those people to whom the ruling regarding these prayers is ambiguous (or doubtful), so he judged them to be recommended, because indeed they are mistaken. Shaikhul Islaam Abu Muhammad Abdur Rahmaan Bin Ismaa’eel Al-Maqdisee has written a precious book showing the falsity of these prayers and he did well. [Al-Majmoo 3/548]
Ibn Al-Haaj Al-Maalikee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “One of the religious innovations that has been initiated in this noble month of Rajab is the prayer of Raghaa’ib on the night before the first day of Jumu’ah in the central mosques and the other mosques, so the people gather in some of the central mosques and the other mosques in the various regions to perform this religious innovation. They openly perform it in congregation and behind an Imaam in the mosques were the five daily prayers are performed as if it is a prayer that has been legislated in Islaam. But this prayer – according to the judgement in Imaam Maalik’s school of jurisprudence- is forbidden, because indeed those who came before us (i.e. the Prophet’s companions) never did so and all good is found in following them [may Allaah be pleased with them]”. [Al-Madkhal 1/294]
Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said, “Neither Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] performed this prayer nor anyone amongst the Sahaabah (i.e. the companions of Allaah’s Messenger), neither the Taabi’een (i.e. the second generaation who adhered to the path of the Sahaabah) nor the Imaams of the Muslims. Neither did Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] show a desire for it nor did any of the pious predecessors, nor the Imaams of Islaam and nor did they mention specific virtues for this night. The narrations that have been transmitted and attributed to Allaah’s Messenger [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] are a lie and fabrication based on the consensus of those who are specialists in this field [of hadeeth science]. This is why the Muhaqqi’qeen scholars [i.e. those scholars who are firmly grounded in a subject matter of the religion, who study the difference of opinion or differing in a subject matter, gather the proofs, examine the proofs in depth and compare them. Then they mention the affair that is established based on sound proof, clarify why those proofs are the strong ones, its different types and why that which opposes is weak or fabricated] have stated that this affair [i.e. these innovated acts during Rajab and Shaban] are forbidden and not recommended”. TARAAWEEH AND ITS ISSUES
by Asma bint Shameem
1. What is Taraaweeh?
Taraaweeh is the prayer that is prayed in Ramadhaan at night after praying Ishaa'. It is a confirmed Sunnah of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) and a regularly established practiced of the Sahaabah.
It is called 'Taraaweeh' because the Sahaabah used to make their prayers very long in Ramadhaan, eager to please Allaah and do their best to earn Jannah.
And when they got tired, they would rest (istaraahu) after every two or four rak'ahs.
▪️The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Whoever prays qiyaam (Taraaweeh) in Ramadhaan out of faith and in the hope of reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven."
(al-Bukhaari, Muslim)
▪️Al-Haafiz Ibn Rajab said:
"Note that in the month of Ramadhaan the believer engages in jihad al-nafs on two fronts: during the day by fasting and during the night by praying qiyaam. Whoever combines these two types of jihad will be given a reward without a limit."
2. Don't make it more important than Ishaa'
People are very keen to read the Taraaweeh prayer, which is very good, of course.
That is to be highly encouraged.
But the problem arises if we give things more importance than what Allaah places on it.
Some people will give so much importance to Taraaweeh that they make it even more important than the Ishaa' prayer.
They may miss Ishaa', that's acceptable to them. But they will never, ever miss Taraaweeh.
And we all see,and know, so many people doing that. They never pray or maybe pray occasionally here and there. We never see them at the masjid, not even for Jumu'ah. And come Ramadhaan, they will come every single day to the masjid, even if they are tired, even if it is late. But they will not miss Taraaweeh.
Or they may even be regular in their daily prayers in Ramadhaan but after Ramadhaan is over, they stop praying altogether, although they are very, very regular and very keen to pray Taraaweeh.
Now, please don't get me wrong.
I'm not discouraging them from coming to Taraaweeh. At least they are making the effort, alhamdulillaah.
It becomes an issue when Taraaweeh takes precedence and greater importance than Fardh prayers.
Dear brothers and sisters, we have to keep our priorities straight.
Remember that Taraaweeh prayer is MUSTAHABB, and recommended while Ishaa prayer is FARDH.
Allaah will NOT PUNISH US if we don't pray Taraaweeh. But Allaah WILL ask us if we don't pray our FARDH prayers.
The questioning will be about the Faraidh, the obligations, NOT the voluntary or nawaafil Ibaadaat.
🔹3. Missing Taraaweeh and not praying it at all
Indeed, Taraaweeh is one of the greatest acts of worship by means of which we can come closer to Allaah, our Lord, beg Him for forgiveness and hope for His Mercy, all the while earning immense reward from Him.
Yet, some people don't understand the virtues of this beautiful prayer and have a very casual attitude towards it.
They either just sit at home doing nothing, although they are awake, or they spend their time at the gym, or shopping, eating, playing, watching TV or movies, etc. and miss out on this golden chance.
And although, *we will not be sinful* if we don't pray Taraaweeh, what a waste of abeautiful opportunity!
Here Allaah is handing it out to us by the handfuls!
He's showering us with blessings upon blessings...mercy upon mercy....forgiveness upon forgiveness!
And we just sit at home and let this chance of a lifetime pass by?
What could be a greater loss than that?!!
🔹4. Taraaweeh in the masjid is much better than Taraaweeh at home
It is much better for the brothers to pray Taraaweeh in the masjid.
That's because the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) led the people in the masjid to pray Taraaweeh for three consecutive nights, as was narrated in Saheeh Bukhaari by Aaishah Radhi Allaahu anha.
Also that was the practice of Umar Radhi Allaahu anhu and the other Sahaabah because the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Whoever prays qiyaam with the imam until he leaves, it will be as if he spent the whole night in prayer."
(Tirmidhi-- saheeh by al-Albaani)
It was said to Ahmad ibn Hanbal:
"Do you prefer a man to pray with the people in Ramadhaan or on his own?
He said:
He should pray with the people." (Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi)
🔹5. But Taraaweeh can also be prayed at home
If some people cannot go to the masjid for some reason, they miss the Taraaweeh prayers all together thinking that it can only be prayed in the masjid.
Although it is better for them to pray it in the masjid, it is also allowed to pray Taraaweeh at home.
So don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity, thinking that you cannot pray this virtuous prayer at home.
🔹6. Oh no! I missed Ishaa and they're praying Taraaweeh!
What should I do?
Sometimes you may get to the masjid late for whatever reason, and the Ishaa prayer has already finished. The Imaam is praying Taraaweeh, but you have not yet prayed 'Ishaa.
So what to do?
Don't be the like the ones who go to the back, quickly read four fast Rakaat Ishaa', separate from the rest of the congregation while they are praying Taraaweeh and then quickly join the congregation.
That is against the etiquette of prayer, and there's no khushoo' in your fardh prayer.
Solution:
Since the Taraaweeh prayer is read ONLY after you're done with Ishaa' so what you can do is to join the congregation and pray with them. However, you make the intention for your Ishaa prayer while they are praying with the intention of Taraaweeh.
Then, when the Imaam finishes and says salaam after two rakaat, you don't say salaam; rather you stand up and complete the rest of your Ishaa prayer. It is perfectly OKAY for you to have a different intention and the Imaam has a different intention.
🍃 Shaikh Ibn Baaz said:
"There is nothing wrong with his praying with them with the intention of praying 'Isha', according to the more correct of the two scholarly views. When the imam says the tasleem he should stand up and complete his prayer. It was proven in Saheeh al-Bukhaari and Muslimfrom Mu'aadh ibn Jabal that he used to pray 'Isha', then he would go back to his people and lead them in 'Isha' prayer, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not denounce that. This indicates that it is permissible to offer a fard prayer behind someone who is praying a naafil prayer."
(Majmoo' Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz)
🔹7. Stay till the end
Some people leave the congregation before the Imaam is finished because of various reasons. It could be that they want to pray more Nawaafil once they go home or they think that one shouldn't be praying more than eight rakaat (if the Imaam is reading more than that) or because they want to pray witr just before suhoor, etc.
But in doing so, they miss out on the reward of praying the whole night.
🍃 That's because the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Whoever prays with the imaam until he finishes, Allaah will record for him as if he spent the whole night in prayer" (al-Tirmidhi--saheeh by al-Albaani)
So whoever finishes with the Imaam will have the reward of spending the whole night in prayer, even if you go home and sleep! Subhaan Allaah!
And whoever left early, will only get the reward of whatever he prayed.
🍃 Someone asked Shaykh Ibn Baaz:
If a person prays in Ramadhaan with someone who prays twenty-three rak'ahs, but he only prays eleven and does not complete the prayer with the imam, is this action of his in accordance with the Sunnah?
He replied: "The Sunnah is to complete the prayer with the Imaam, even if he prays twenty-three rak'ahs, because the Messenger Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam said:
"Whoever stands (in prayer) with the imam until he finishes, Allah will record for him (the reward of) spending a night in prayer."
According to another report: "... The rest of that night."
It is better for one who is praying behind an Imaam to stay with him until he finishes, whether he prays eleven rak'ahs or thirteen or twenty three or whatever.
That is preferable, to follow the Imaam until he finishes."
(Majmoo' Fataawa Ibn Baaz)
🍃 And Imaam Ahmad used to pray with the Imaam and not leave until he finished, acting in accordance with the hadeeth.
🔹8. More than one Imaam?
If there are two or more Imaams leading Taraaweeh in the masjid, then Taraaweeh prayer is the prayer of all the imaams.
So if you want to attain the reward of spending the whole night in prayer, then do not leave until all the imaams have completed his prayer.
🔹 9. What if I can't stay till the end?
Try and do your best to stay till the Imaam finishes so that you can get the reward of praying the whole night.
However, it happens that sometimes we just have to leave even if we so desperately want to stay till the end.
And this may be because of very valid reasons such as work, school, kids, health reasons, etc.
In this situation, stay as much as you can and pray whatever Allaah enables you to.
🍃 Allaah says:
"Therefore fear Allah as much as you are able" (Surah at-Taghaabun)
Praying even two rakaat with the Imaam is much better than not praying at all.
And of course, Allaah is well aware of your situation and your niyyah.
So do your best and hope in the Mercy of Allaah.
🍃 ibn al-Mubaarak said:
"Maybe a small action is made great by its intention, and maybe a great action is made small by its intention."
🔹 10. I want to finish with the Imaam but I want to delay my Witr
There are many well-known ahaadeeth which encourage us to DELAY our Witr, and to make it the LAST prayer of the night.
That is indeed a preferred thing to do.
🍃 The Prophet (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Make the last of your prayer at night Witr." (Bukhaari, Muslim)
🍃 And he (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:
"Night prayers are two by two, and when you feel that dawn is approaching, pray one rak'ah." (Bukhaari, Muslim)
So you want to follow the hadeeth and make Witr your last prayer of the night but you also want to get the reward of praying the whole night when you finish with the Imaam.
How does one do that?
When the Imaam stands up for Witr, you stand up with him and join him in the prayer. However, you make your intention to pray more rakaat for taraaweeh, although the Imaam will have the intention of praying witr. Then when the Imaam says salaam, you dont say salaam; rather you stand up and add a rakah to the Witr and make it an even number. This way you finish with the Imaam and you can then go home and pray as much Tahajjud as you want before Suhoor and then pray your witr so as to make it your last prayer of the night.
🍃 Shaykh Ibn Baaz was asked:
"When some people pray Witr with the imam and the Imaam says the salaam, they stand up and do another rak'ah so that their Witr will be at the end of the night.
What is the ruling on doing this?
Is it regarded as finishing the prayer with the Imaam?"
He replied:
"We do not know of there being anything wrong with this.
The scholars stated that there is nothing wrong with doing that so that one will pray Witr at the end of the night. It is still true that he has stood with the imam until he finishes, because he stayed with him until the imam finished, then he prayed an extra rak'ah for a legitimate shar'i purpose, so that his Witr will be at the end of the night.
There is nothing wrong with that, and that does not mean that he did not stay with the imam, rather he stayed with the imam until he finished, but then he did not finish with him, rather he delayed a little.”
(Majmoo' Fataawa Ibn Baaz)
🔹11. Can I pray witr twice in one night?
If you have prayed Witr with the Imaam, it is not allowed to pray Witr again at night later on.
🍃 Shaykh Ibn Baaz was asked:
If I have prayed Witr at the beginning of the night, then I get up to pray qiyaam at the end of the night, how should I pray?
He replied:
If you have prayed Witr at the beginning of the night then Allaah enables you to get up at the end of the night, then pray whatever you can two by two - without Witr, because the Prophet (sal Allaahu alaiyhi wa sallam) said:
"There cannot be no two Witrs in one night." (al-Tirmidhi-- saheeh by al-Albaani) (Majmoo' Fataawa Ibn Baaz)
🔹12. Can I pray Tahajjud/Nawaafil even after I have prayed witr?
Indeed, the Prophet (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) told us to make the Witr our last prayer of the night, However, this command is in the sense of it being mustahabb and preferable, not in the sense of it being obligatory and compulsory.
🍃 Proof:
When Aa'ishah Radhi Allaahu anha was asked about the Witr of the Prophet (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) she described the way he (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam)prayed and then she said: ".... then he would pray two rak'ahs after that, whilst sitting down."
(Muslim)
🍃 Al-Nawawi said:
"The correct view is that he (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) performed these two rak'ahs after Witr sitting down, to demonstrate that it is permissible to pray after Witr, and to demonstrate that it is permissible to offer naafil prayers sitting down."
🍃 Shaykh Ibn Baaz also said, explaining the reason why the Prophet (sal Allaahu alyahi wa sallam) prayed two rak'ahs after Witr:
"The reason for that - and Allaah knows best - is to show to the people that it is permissible to pray after Witr." (Fataawa Islamiyyah)
🍃 Ibn Hazm said:
"Witr at the end of the night is better, but whoever prays Witr at the beginning of the night, that is fine. It is permissible to pray after Witr but one should not repeat Witr."(al-Muhalla)
So if you want to pray Tahajjud at night, it is permissible for you to pray Witr with the congregation, then to pray more Nawaafil after that.
You can pray as many rak'ahs as you want two by two.
It does not have to be only two rakaat and do not repeat Witr.
🔹13. Should I pray 8 or 20?
Some people go to extremes and fight with each other over the number of rakaat in the Taraaweeh prayer.
They refuse to pray in the masjid that has eight rakaat or twenty rakaat and or just sit in the back if the Imaam is reading more than eight.
Dear brothers and sisters, there's no need to fight, argue or get angry.
It is perfectly OKAY to read EIGHT rakaat and it is ALSO OKAY to read TWENTY.
🍃 Proof:
A man came to the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) and asked:
"How are the night prayers done? He (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said:
"The night prayers are two by two, then when you fear that dawn is about to break, pray Witr with one rak'ah."
(al-Bukhaari)
Here we see that the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) told the man how to do the night prayer but did not specify the number of rakaat.
Yes, the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) himself used to pray eight at night but when the man asked him about it, he did not tell him to pray only eight.
Rather he left the number to him.
This shows that the matter is FLEXIBLE and broad in scope.
A person may pray two, twenty or two hundred rakaat if he likes, and then he can pray Witr.
🍃 Imam Ahmad said:
"There is no set number of rak'ahs for qiyaam during Ramadhaan, because the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) did not set a number."
🍃 Shaykh Ibn Baaz said:
“It is proven that 'Umar Radhi Allaahu anhu told the one whom he appointed among the Sahaabah to pray eleven rak'ahs, and it is also proven that they prayed twenty-three rak'ahs based on his command.
This indicates that the matter is broad in scope and that the matter was flexible according to the Sahaabah.
That is also indicated by the words of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) :"The night prayers are two by two."
(Majmoo' al-Fataawa)
🔹14. Can I hold the Qur'aan (Mus-haf) while praying Taraaweeh?
It is much BETTER and more preferred that one should NOT be reading from the Qur'aan while praying Taraaweeh, in order to have full concentration and better khushoo' and avoiding excessive movements.
However, IF reading from the Qur'aan while praying Taraaweeh, gives you better understanding of what the Imaam is reading, and gives you more KHUSHOO' and concentration, then some Ulama allowed holding the Qur'aan and following the recitation of the Imaam. And the prayer is valid.
🍃 Someone asked Shaykh al-Albaani if it’s allowed to hold the Mus-haf and look at it while praying behind an Imaam in Taraaweeh.
Shaikh Al-Albaani said:
“No, no that is not from the Sunnah.”
Questioner: If he does it, is his prayer valid though?
Shaykh Al-Albaani:
“His prayer is valid.”
Questioner:
“But in opposition to the Sunnah?”
Shaykh Al-Albaani: “Yes”.
(Al-Hudaa wan-Noor, 679)
🔹15. Taraweeh is proven from the Sunnah; it is NOT a bid'ah
The Taraaweeh prayer is a CONFIRMED SUNNAH of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) and the established practice of his Sahaabah.
The Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) HIMSELF prayed it and led the people as did the Sahaabah, Tabi'een and the great Ulama of the following generations, following his example.
🍃 Proof:
Aa'ishah Radhi Allaahu anha said that the Messenger of Allaah (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) prayed one night in the masjid, and the people followed him in prayer. Then he prayed the next night, and many people came. Then they gathered on the third or fourth night, and the Messenger of Allaah (sal Allaahu alaiyhi wa
sallam) did not come out to them.
The next morning he (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
"I saw what you did, and nothing kept me from coming out to you except the fact that I FEARED that it would be made OBLIGATORY for you." And that was in Ramadhaan."
(al-Bukhaari and Muslim)
This proves that praying Taraweeh in congregation is prescribed according to the Sunnah of the Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam), but he (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) refrained from doing it continuously because he feared that it might become fardh on me and you.
When the Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) passed away, Umar Radhi Allaahu anhu revived this Sunnah since this reservation was no longer there, because the Sharee'ah was established and complete.
🍃 When Ali Radhi Allaahu anhu passed by the masaajid in which there were lamps during the month of Ramadhaan, he said:
'May Allaah illuminate Umar's grave for him as he illuminated our mosques for us." (al-Mughni).
🔹16. Any specific duas to be read in between every two or four rakaat❓
There is a very common misconception that there are some specific duas (called 'Dua Taraaweeh') to be read in between the rakaat.
You see people reading it and even some masaajid have overhead projectors that highlight and show these duas to the people so that they can read them.
There is NO PROOF in the Sharee'ah for that.
And neither the imam nor those praying behind him should read those duas.
That's because acts of worship are 'tawqeefi' which mean that Ibaadah is governed by the principle that nothing is permitted except that which was prescribed by the Prophet sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam.
Constantly doing a particular act of worship at a particular time without any evidence for that from the Sharee'ah comes under the heading of BID’AH or innovation.
🍃 The Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "Whoever does an action that is not part of this matter of ours (Islam) will have it rejected."
(al-Bukhaari, Muslim)
🔹17. Finishing the Qur'aan in Taraaweeh early does NOT mean there's no more Taraaweeh
Some people are under the impression that if they finish the recitation of the Qur'aan early in Ramadhaan, then there's no more Taraaweeh.
That's absolutely NOT TRUE.
The main goal in Ramadhaan is to stand in qiyaam at night...every single night, read a lot of Qur'aan and reflect on the ayaat....NOT to quickly finish the Qur'aan from cover to cover whether in five days or ten days or whatever and then the rest of Ramadhaan, you are 'off' from Taraaweeh!
Reading the Qur'aan in Taraaweeh is not a 'chore' or 'burden' that you get off your head. It is to humble yourself before Allaah, get yourself away from the dunya and its glamor and bring yourself back to the reality that one day we have to face our Lord and give account of ourselves.
It is hard to believe that there are masaajid in Pakistan that hold Taraaweeh prayers in the first ten days of Ramadhaan ONLY.
Why?
So that they are 'done' with Taraaweeh and they don't have to pray this beautiful prayer for the rest of the nights of Ramadhaan because they 'finished' the Qur'aan.
Now they can do what they want; relax, shop, have fun, go to sleep... basically go back to their 'pre-Ramadhaan' state!
May Allaah guide us all and enable us to see and realize the real purpose of fasting and qiyaam and enable us to achieve that. Ameen.
And Allaah knows Best.
