so i was rewatching the end of lmk s4 with some friends today, and i noticed that in 4x10 peng says smth to nezha like "let the demon child come out and play!" and like. if i knew more about nezha lore thatd probably be quite concerning to me as a lorehead. and you seem knowledgeable. so. any thoughts?

oh boy. (cracks knuckles) it's late and i should be sleeping but I'm also sad so Nezha interest go BRRRRR

i will say for any accurate/culturally referenced info, go check out @ruibaozha - i am simply summing up as much as i can and some stuff is missing/not elaborated on

let me break down the basic elements of the Nezha myths.

Nezha is born his mom and his military dad, Li Jing, and his older brothers Muzha (second) and Jinzha (first). but Nezha is like fucking. superpower baby for some reason? Apparently the heavens decided to bless Li Jing with a powerful son for his military prowess, and Nezha's mom, Lady Yin(?), was pregnant for 3+ years. Then Nezha popped out as a goddamn ball of flesh. His dad attacked him because hey! Flesh ball! But then Nezha's ball split open and he jumped out as an already formed young child (ages often unclear- ppl say he's 7, or 12, and in some cases he died after only 3 days(?) alive.) either way, Taiyi Zhenren swoops in to be Nezha's master, and everything is fine for some time.

at least til Nezha kills Ao Bing. this part of the myth is really what defines Nezha as a "demon child" or not. in Fengsheng Yanyi/Investiture of the Gods, ONE of the older/more well-known written versions of his story, Nezha washes his sash in the East Sea and causes the dragon palace to quake. Ao Guang understandably gets pissed and sends up his general to ask him to stop, who Nezha kills. then Ao Guang's 3rd son, Ao Bing, who Nezha also kills (and rips out his tendon to wear as a belt)! sometimes Nezha also kills a demon, apprentice of Lady Earth Flow, miles away on accident because he randomly fired a bow. yet in another cases, Nezha is the hero- a demon came up to eat children at the shore, and Nezha obviously killed the dude, then Ao Bing, same thing. but in other other versions, Nezha was friends with Bing and accidentally killed him while playing due to being ultra powerful...

and then Ao Guang threatens Nezha's town, because the kid killed his son. (sometimes Nezha goes and strangles Guang before he can talk to the Jade Emperor, so...) Guang demands an apology and/or Nezha's life or he'll flood the whole mountain pass. and Nezha decides to slit his own goddamn throat to apologize to his parents and "return his body to them". Aka: he commits suicide at like, seven(?)

From here on, stuff differs: Li Jing is a shitty dad (like he REALLY really hates Nezha. calls him a curse and beats him), Nezha gets a temple and Jing burns it down, Nezha gets reborn in a lotus body by his master and/or Buddha, goes on a murder rampage against his dad and Muzha (beats up Muzha w/ a golden brick), is forced to submit to his dad through a Golden Pagoda, making Li Jing the Golden Pagoda Bearing Li Jing, sometimes Jinzha gets to flog his brother, and Nezha's basically a bitter fire god (child) put into the literal armies of heaven. he's also got his 6/8-armed and 3-headed war form in the myths...

now, this is a very long yet still EXTREMELY short explanation of the myth(s), and the "message" really boils down to what version you tell- the boy who started stuff by (unintentionally) murdering people, or the hero. but a lot of the main point of nezha's myth was originally about filial piety, and can be told as a story to remind kids that the parents are always superior, but in more modern myths and stories, Nezha has ended up shifting more into a symbol of rebellion. He's the protection deity of children: the outcasts and the demon children, the kids who question things and are loud and outspoken and aren't what people (especially their parents) want them to be. Nezha's story entirely depends on region, context and intent, which makes him a very versatile figure.

Now, put that into LMK?

I have a lot of hcs abt why LMK Nezha is the way he is, but my main one comes down to that "demon child" line. I like to think that Nezha was basically an uncontrolled force of war power and killed Ao Bing (regardless of the situation).

But then he got put into heaven and 1. realized how he acted and had to deal with crushing guilt and self-hatred and 2. got groomed into a (then) child soldier 👍

He was still a general, but learned to channel all that destructive power into being a protector and how to defend instead (ex: his shields, sealing power, etc). He takes his current job very seriously bc he sees it as his only reason to still be worth existing. he also dislikes Wukong bc he sees far too much of a younger him in Wukong; doomed for destructiveness and chaos. this is also why i put parallels to Nezha and MK because. yeah. (and imo, although i know Nezha paid it back w/ his suicide, I'm a bit surprised Mei wasn't taught to hate him, due to how much family matters to dragons...)

so aka, my hc of: "dude was literally always seen as a demon child/symbol of destruction, and therefore after being used as a literal war weapon and then being made to guard a map for ages (probably because he didn't want to harm anyone else), DUDE'S GOT ISSUES!"

God i love this scene so much:

Everybody's talked about it already, a lot to love here, but what gets to me is that it took Mike all season to touch Will like he does in this scene.

They began s4 with that super awkward meeting at the airport. Will went for a hug, but was denied; Mike only patted his shoulder half-heartedly and acted like Will was radioactive. There's a careful distance between them all season, so unlike how they behaved in s2 or even s3, and although it gets better after they make up in 4x04 it doesn't disappear until vol.2.

Sure, they touch during s4, but it's not really purposeful. It's just taking action together, being in dangerous situations or simply occupying the same space (the van).

But in vol. 2? They search for physical proximity. They don't need to stand close together, but they do. They can easily avoid bumping elbows but they don't.

So here, in this sunlit scene, they take a minute to sit on the couch and have one of their talks (they seach for emotional connection too!). Their friendship seems completely restored, and there's a sense of comfort with each other, even though they're worried, like everyone else, about the situation they find themselves in.

They're sitting cross-legged, mirroring, feet pointing to each other. But Will is clasping his hands nervously, and Mike's are placed carefully on his knees. His leg is also up; he's mindful not to cross into Will's space or even into the light between them.

Still, his eyes are on Will, he's facing the same direction, and the arrow above his heart is still pointing like a compass, like Will is his True north.

(I wonder if we can attribute this compass metaphor to Will/Mike/El triangle. Both in s1 and s4 Dustin discovers that the compass isn't pointing where it's supposed to, cause there's a massive source of electro-magnetic field that disturbs the magnet inside the compass. Can El metaphorically be this anomaly that caught Mike's attention when his True north is actually elsewhere?)

It's like Mike's whole being is tuned to Will again. Like Will is pulling him in, pulling him close despite himself, despite both of them.

So when Will confindes in Mike about Vecna and we see how worried and scared he actually is, Mike can't keep his hands to himself anymore.

He reaches out to hold Will's shoulder - very much deliberately this time, with purpose and meaning and feeling.

It also mirrors Will's gesture at the pizza place, when he grabs Mike's shoulder to remind him that "you're the heart" and punctuates his words by little taps on Mike's back.

So here, on the couch, putting a hand on Will's shoulder and keeping it there even when they're interrupted (by a car pulling up) - it's like a reply Mike's giving him, and a silent thank you, and also a promise. It's amazing how much is communicated here without having to say it out loud.

And i love it. I love it so much. I just love it.

It's like their whole journey this season has peaked with this one gesture.

Especially Mike's journey. It really took him this whole-ass double-time season, bless his heart.

Alright lets talk about THAT scene

Honestly I'm still processing all of it and I don't even know if this is even gonna be coherent or more like

This is long. LETS GO

So it's still very much up in the air as to whether that was really Hiyori or not because of the whole illusion thing that Father has going on in this domain but I'm going to assume this is actually her. It just seems kinda weird for Adachitoka to pull that and then go 'Haha SIKE! Jk!' in the next update. Like, if you're gonna pull a scene like that- you gotta commit to the bit ya know?

So let's assume it's all real. Cord snapped. Kapow. She's dead. Now what? God I wish I fucking knew because Adachitoka LOVE to throw curve balls at us so no matter what we predict it'll probably be wrong 🙃

But I think this might have something to do with it.

Kofuku was the one to originally tie the plaques together (uh oh) but then Ookunushi was the one to place them back and bless them with happiness. So you've got a disaster god dooming them but a god of fortune blessing them. Those poor plaques are so confused lol. But either way, Yato and Hiyori are bonded for life and that's an already pretty strong bond they've got. They're two idiots in love and call it silly and cliché but perhaps it's that bond that will save them.

Hiyori is a special case. She's a half-Ayakashi with ties to both the Near Shore and the Far-Shore and we have no idea what happens to someone like that when they die. Do they lose their memories? Will she forget Yato, Yukine, and everyone else from the Far Shore? Will she forget her name? Again, a tricky one but since she treads the lines between the two worlds and her soulmate is a god, maybe not. It could be possible that she retains all those Far Shore memories and forgets a lot of the Near. She remembers her name but can't recall her parents or friends faces.

(That then brings up the huge elephant in the room of what other shinki will think of that and then start to ponder their own deaths leading to the GGS (the likes of Daikoku, Bishamon and Ebisu's shinki etc) but let's just put that to one side for a minute. I can only have one panic at a time)

I think one thing is for certain at this point though. Noragami won't exactly have a happy ending. Either Hiyori somehow lives and Yato is forced to cut her ties and she forgets everything or she dies and permanently joins the Far Shore, leaving her life, ambitions, friends and family behind. And yeah, neither of those are good. But it looks like they're the only options. Now shoot me for this but I seem to lean towards the latter. I really hate endings where someone forgets the entire journey they just went on and it ends up in a sort of 'it was all a dream' ending. They just make me angry lol. Person has this amazing story and adventure and it ends with a literal I forgor meme? Lame. It's more impactful if both parties suffer 😈 (Why I always get more emotional watching the S2 finale of Doctor Who than the S4 finale. I hate that Donna had to forget everything to save her. But that's a completely different kettle of fish).

I went on a tangent there oops. ANYWAY. If we go down the route that Hiyori is dead then it seems like only two things can happen; she'll become a shinki or she'll be deified. She can't be dead dead I refuse to believe that 😤 Not only because she's my favourite character but I really can't see Adachitoka killing her off for good.

Now call me a hopeless romantic (and my Yatori brain going ding ding ding) but the immediate answer that came to mind when I saw this passage at the end of the chapter is love. Perhaps it'll be Hiyori's love for Yato (and Yukine of course) that will be the Deus ex machina that will ensure that she can come back and that she comes back with her memories in tact, maybe even bypassing the GGS. With that, she may be the secret weapon to destroying Father (did Ebisu and Take even destroy the shrine? Honestly can't remember). Whether that means Yato will name her and the three of them will completely whoop his ass or something else entirely, but I think that post-death Hiyori will be the final piece needed to end Trash Dad and the crisis on earth.

Horrific as it is, It would be fitting for her character to make that sacrifice. She's always been brave and selfless and if she knew that in order to save everyone she loves on earth and the rest of the population by fighting by Yato's side, even if that meant that she had to die, she'd do it.

Yes this isn't the perfect ending but there is no perfect ending. Hiyori has been doomed ever since she jumped in front of that bus.

I like to think Hua Jiao sometimes forgets stuff about Xci Nicco. Like he's introducing someone to Xci Nicco like:

Hua Jiao: "and this is Xci Nicco, my beautiful..." *trailing off*

Xci Nicco: "it's okay if you call me your wife or your spouse, darling. We've been married for over 20 years.."

Hua Jiao: "My beautiful wife— I forget terms way too easily.."

Xci Nicco: "Qi Hua Jiao, we've been married for 20 years! Get your head out of the clouds, I'm already yours!"

Hua Jiao then shushes Xci Nicco like how MK did with Macaque in the S4 special.

"LAKAPATI XCI NICCO, NOT INFRONT OF THE CHILDREN!!!" -(Hua Jiao)

Aww haha! Hua Jiao forgetting that he's actually married to his beautiful wife is adorable. <3

I actually had to rewatch some of the S4 special to see what you meant by the shushing and...XD

Powerful shushing powers - likely inherited from Wukong.

I love the thought of immortal married couple like just forgetting that they got married, like there's so much going on that it slips their mind. Not maliciously, it's just that they're so stoked to be with the one they love that they forget titles. Like that one joke from Hotel Translyvania 2;

I can even see something similar happening to Shadowpeach a few times.

Wukong: "Hey, this might sound a bit out of pocket - but what are we exactly? I mean, we've had our break ups and make up, but I really want to know what title I oculd call you beyond my dearest Moon or Warrior." Macaque: "...Wukong we've been techinally married since the Siege on Heaven." Wukong: "WHAT!?" Macaque: "You don't remember? The rest of the Brotherhood were there. We were panicking about us not getting spousal rights if one of us died in battle. We passed Yue Lao..." Wukong: *thinks Really Hard* (Flashback to the Siege on Heaven)

(back to present time) Wukong: "OH! I forgot it counted legally. Sorry plums." Macaque, sighs fondly: "My idiot husband..." Wukong: "We should do a repeat ceremony once all this Bone Demon nonsense rolls over."

In this case, it was the God of Marriage Yue Lao, who they passed by on accident during the siege, and he gave Shadowpeach his blessing (he can see the Strings of Fate that connect soulmates). Just as good (even better than) as a marriage certificate.

The Fruity Four-Eddie x Steve x Robin x Reader

Story Summary: Steve, Eddie, Robin and you have become incredibly close after saving your brother from the upside down in the Spring of ‘86.(Re-write of S4. Same Characters. No Vecna) As you try to enjoy having a normal life again this Summer, you end up finding yourselves in a poly-amorous relationship.

Chapter One :Harrington’s Wing-women

I sat on the counter at Family Video, sorting through returns while Robin and Steve did the closing chores.

I jumped off the counter to put away the first pile, when I realized they were both staring at me.

"What?"

"I told you she wasn't listening," Steve said to Robin while rolling his eyes.

"It wasn't on purpose. She was in the movie sorting zone," Robin quipped to Steve.

I smiled. I loved how Robin just got me. She was the first one I befriended when I moved to Hawkins 5 months ago. The plan was to lay low, try to graduate by some miracle and then get the hell out of this creepy, middle-of-nowhere little town. To say irony is cruel is an understatement. In this case though, as cheesy as it sounds, it was also a blessing in disguise.

"Yeah, exactly. Someone has to do the work around here," I said as I playfully shoved him aside.

"I SAID," he started emphatically ,"that I need you guys to be my wing women at a little shindig at my place tonight."

"And I told HIM, that you and I already have plans to have a double date tonight with Vickie and Eddie.”

Before I could answer, Steve interjected, " And that's when I tried to remind YOU while you were busy in la la land,” he gesticulated with wiggling his fingers up in the air,” that you guys are always leaving me out for double dates or making me the fifth wheel so you both owe me. “

Again, they both stared at me, waiting for a response. Robin begging with her eyes that I would side with her and Steve doing the same with pathetic puppy dog eyes.

I let out a big sigh. Although going to a party and playing cupid for Steve and his flavor of the week sounded about as appealing as being chased by demobats in the underworld, I was thankful for an opportunity to not have a double date with Robin. Last Friday night, her and I had one of our normal movie binge nights. We ended up getting into my mom’s liquor cabinet and one thing let to another and we ended up making out. Heavily. I stopped it before it went further and we both just laughed it off, blaming it on the alcohol. We haven’t talked about it since and I haven’t even told Eddie yet. Not because I’m trying to hide anything but because I haven’t completely processed it myself yet.

“Which girl is it this time? Mandy?” I asked.

“Mindy! God, you guys never listen to me!”

“Or it’s just impossible to keep track,” Robin retorted.

“Why do you need our help? Aren’t your classically good looks,” I took my hand and stroked it along his cheek before adding “and dazzling personality enough?”

I instantly regretted touching him. Even though my intention was playful, being that close to him and seeing him look me in the eyes so close...I felt this electricity. Like how I use to feel when I first met him. We slept together once but we just agreed to stay friends. I’d be lying if I said those feelings didn’t still pop up every now and then but I just push them to the side. Eddie and I made sense. Steve and I just don’t.

I think he felt it too because he averted his eyes and fixed his hair before responding, “I need help,” he coughed out, “because her cousin is in town and she has to entertain her. So I, being the great and accommodating guy I am, said that I could show them how we party Hawkins-style.”

“By getting stuck in another dimension and having to fight other-worldly beasts?” I asked.

“Or by getting so shit faced you forget you live in a small town where the only fun thing to do is getting shit faced?" Robin added.

Steve deflated.” Look, I just need you guys to keep her cousin entertained while I make my move finally with Mandy. Shit. Mindy. Please?”

Robin and I both looked at each other, defeat in our eyes, knowing the only way to shut him up was to give in.

“Fine. But I’m bringing Eddie.”

“Yes! “Steve said with a fist pump. “That guy knows how to party.”

“Someone just shoot me,” Robin said, holding a finger gun to her head.

The Mulder Family In-Depth (Part VIII): Tena, Amor Fati, and Who's the Daddy

Tena's absence heavily marks Mulder's life post-Demons, stretching through the end of S4 and into all of S5 and S6. The incredibly close and traumatized bond she's shared with her son is shattered after his confrontation; and she reacts to this new schism like she has every other trauma in her life: denial, outrageous anger, and silent avoidance. This neglect contributes to Mulder's apathetic nihilism after Scully's recovery, slowly (and unknowingly for him) inserting a wedge in his and Scully's relationship that Diana Fowley tries to split wide open. Thankfully, Mulder is able to recover ground in S6; but the effects of her distance linger, leading up to her reemergence in The Sixth Extinction: Amor Fati.

The Aftermath of Demons

During Gethsemane-Redux II, Mulder has no emotional support outside of Scully like he had before: in End Game, he had his mother to tuck in. In The Blessing Way and Paper Hearts, Tena cooed at him and rewarded his visits with love and affection (she started to do so in Demons; but his confrontation and accusations turned her spigot of affection off.) When Mulder hits his lowest, his mind has already vetoed Tena as a source of support, having no one to stand between himself and his gun other than the few days or weeks Scully has left on this earth (not a powerful motivator.)

He “commits suicide” and Scully is called in to identify his body-- Tena never comes, never identifies, never approaches the situation at all. We’re not given any information on how she’s processing the news-- aggrieved and holed up, heartbroken, at home like Anasazi-The Blessing Way; or emotionally numb and ignoring any and all calls or news about her son-- but it’s safe to say that’s pretty telling and horrific to do to your own child, especially if the fault is all of your own making.

During all of the emotional upheaval of Redux II-- CSM producing Samantha for her brother, laying out a tasty proposition for him, then getting shot while Mulder exposes Raush’s connections with the FBI higher-ups, and (of course) losing Scully then almost saving her then losing her again then miraculously witnessing her recovery-- he does not once mention his mother, and she does not once check up on him. It’s a repeat of his relationship with his father, one he didn’t see happening with his emotionally-available mother.

During S5, Tena continues to be absent from Mulder’s life. It’s really a melancholy season: Tena is gone from his life, leaving Mulder to solely rely on a woman whose life is tied to a mind-controlling chip in her neck. Not only that, but he has to watch her life fall apart at the hands of the men his father worked with: men who extracted her ova, and callously used it to create a hybrids-daughter who can’t survive without being treated like a lab rat every day of her lives. Every action he takes in S5 led to a swift downfall; and Scully has to salvage the two of them constantly from his repeated mistakes and stubborn resistance to her gut instincts about aliens and God. By the end of the season, both of them are burnt out-- literally, when CSM destroys their office.

Again, his mother remains absent and unresponsive.

An important note: Scully uses his mother (and sister) to call back Mulder from the brink in Kitsunegari, stalling off his shooting rampage long enough to save both of them and stop Linda Bowman.

In FTF, Tena does NOT appear to support her son when he is hospitalized for a gunshot wound, leaving him to the care of his Three Stooges' friends and his boss. When he dips to Antarctica, she doesn’t seem to worry or care that her son has gone MIA ; or even worry about any additional bodily traumas and recovery time he has stacked on his plate. There is no response from what would have been a second hospital call in as many days.

During S6, Tena does not appear ONCE. Mulder has learned from Redux II onward that he has been effectively cut from her life; and has, by this point, grown used to her distance. Mulder doesn’t seek her out during his "toilet brush" detail at the hands of Kersh; instead, pouring all of his energy solely into Scully. It’s the start of a deeper, more human connection to Scully than he had been able to form previously;

and possibly could have allowed a more nuanced relationship with his own mother as well-- an upgrade to their usual parentification-alienation dynamic they’d cultivated. But none of that happens.

Another important note: Scully again refers to Tena in The Unnatural, asking if his mother had ever told him to go outside and play. The only two mentions across S5 and S6 have come from Scully to Mulder, proving she is that grounding, "normal" influence between tractor beams and familial, everyday life.

Then Mulder’s brain explodes and his physical abilities implode and all around him goes nuts during Biogenesis and The Sixth Extinction.

The Sixth Extinction-Amor Fati

The episode begins on Mulder’s blissfully peaceful face-- one we hardly ever see-- as he sits on a beach observing a family and their little son. As the boy grows up, Mulder passively follows his adventures, eventually shifting to active participation after extracting himself from his brain's induced, dreamlike state.

(Side note: There’s some speculation about the boy-- "Is he William because the writers were already planning for Requiem’s plot twist?", etc. I believe he’s a manifestation of Mulder’s inner, childish drive for the Truth. He yells at Mulder “You were supposed to help me!” while destroying the UFO sandcastle, a predecessor to dream-Scully yelling at him to “Get up and fight” while the aliens were invading at his doorstep. It’s that inner part of himself that gets lost in the wash of apathy he’s prone to; and which Scully always ignites and pulls him out of-- Little Green Men, Anasazi, One Son, etc.)

In the present, Mulder’s doctor gives his prognosis to Tena Mulder. This is the first we’ve seen of her since Demons; and she doesn’t seem pleased to be put in this position.

She loves her son, she does-- but she’s avoided his sick beds and injuries since his confrontation, blinding herself to the truth: he hadn’t come to cudgel her with the past (like CSM did in Talitha Cumi), and it was deeply unfair and cruel of her to smear him with that greasy label and cast him from her life. She had treated Mulder like her ex-husband: using Bill Mulder as the strawman for all of the past’s wrongs, including her own.

“Enough!” she yells at the doctor.

“There’s only so much bluntness a mother can take.”

Tena looks down and away, a bitter undercurrent to her grief. And while this applies to this specific moment, it also harkens back to the fracturing conversation in Demons and other breaking shouting matches in the past.

Again, Tena demonstrates her main reaction to unavoidable stress is anger, like her son (see here for Demons and here for Talitha Cumi.) She does not wilt: she commands and screams.

She’s already all in black, mourning her son while desperately hoping he’ll pull through. It’s part of their dichotomous relationship:

Mulder was dead to her for over a year now, hypothetically mourned and buried; but now he’s very much alive and truly dying.

She cuts off the doctor’s conciliatory remarks: “All you do is sedate him.”

Turning to her son, she mourns, “You’re turning him… into a zombie.”

The former Mrs. Mulder reaches out to touch her son's face--

but she halts her movements,

either out of guilt for trying to connect now or out of some misguided sense of self-denial. She turns her gesture into a utility, moving his face toward her to look for a sign of recognition--

and, though his eyes drift towards her--

they've listlessly moved, meaning nothing.

“I know you can hear me, Fox,” she insists.

“Can you give me a sign?”

This is incredibly telling: Tena firmly believes their relationship is so strong that Mulder would be able to pull himself from the brink to satisfy any of her pleas. And he would have if he'd been able to-- always will for those he loves (Scully says this directly to Diana’s face later this episode when confronting her in the hallway.)

It’s here that Tena realizes her son is truly beyond all help, medical and personal. There is only one option left: one she hoped to avoid.

Mulder responds internally-- “I can hear you, Mom”-- without realizing his words are trapped in his mind.

Tena has given up hope; and turns to leave-- “Fox…. I love you, my darling boy”-- resigning herself to her next task: calling in smokey reinforcements of the hated ex-lover kind.

Mulder can hear and it makes him desperate for her not to leave. This is the first time in years he has heard her say she loves him; and he can’t hug her or even keep her by his side. It breaks him, and his internal begging escalates to screaming.

It’s here when Mulder’s daydreams mesh with reality as CSM begins invading his thoughts (Note: His response to CSM is intriguing: “I could always hear you. Even when my mind is jammed with a thousand voices, I can hear you like a snake hissing underneath.”) But his mother’s involvement is not quite over.

After Mulder’s disappearance, security camera footage is combed through, showing Tena directly involved in signing out her son to CSM (while his men spraypainted the cameras to avoid detection--

only, they’re really bad at it, ineffectively spraying all of the cameras and catching Tena and their boss’s arm in the process.)

Thus ends Tena's involvement in this episode.

Biological Father?

An important aside is the biological father question; and it’s necessary to pause here to reflect more deeply on this issue.

It’s Amor Fati that takes another firm stance on the paternity issue, stating clearly and concisely that Carl Spender is Fox Mulder’s father, with CSM himself as well as side characters acknowledging this as irrefutable fact (Diana Fowley included.) This becomes canon from now on; however, in previous episodes the issue of paternity was only ever mildly called into question and placed firmly on Samantha’s shoulders: she was the lovechild of Tena and CSM, which is why he spirited her away after her abduction, never returned her, and kept her picture with him wherever he went (established in Redux II; and reaffirmed the rest of S5 and S6. Another post for another day.) In fact, it was firmly established that Fox Mulder was not CSM’s son; and was set up as the foil for Jeffrey Spender so that he could become greater than his rival (Mulder having disappointed and frustrated CSM and the powers that be by not embracing their ideology ultimately) in S5 and S6.

Can these two perspectives-- both held by the same character that had previously had the same conviction for the opposite viewpoint but changed it suddenly and (seemingly) randomly without any new information on the topic, unlike any other issue he dealt with previously in canon that had involved him directly or indirectly-- be reconciled? Or is it the writers’ fault?

Well, of course it’s the writers’ fault. But let’s examine the two theories:

#1. Bill Mulder is Fox Mulder’s biological father.

This holds up because it was implied he didn’t meet Carl Spender until they bunked together at the army base around a year after Fox Mulder was born. They were friendly enough for Bill to brag about his son’s first word-- “J.F.K.”-- but not enough for Carl to have known about the finer details of Bill’s family’s life (names, ages, etc.) Bill and Tena were married ten months before Mulder was born, meaning he was either a honeymoon baby or a very late out-of-wedlock baby. Regardless, that leaves no wiggle room for a paternity question. EXCEPT Travelers is set in the 50s, previous to the Mulders’ marriage in the early 60s, and Bill is sporting a wedding ring and recruited out of the army. Because of that hiccup in the timeline, it lends more credence to the show bible's interpretation (meaning: there was no show bible-- Chris Carter and his show runners were proud of that fact); or Bill, like his son, just likes to wear wedding rings without being married.

#2. CSM is Fox Mulder’s biological father.

Samantha is already established to have been his daughter (with strong confirmation in Demons alone; but continual proof since Redux II), so it wouldn’t change his abduction reason. But if this were true, why did he leave Mulder to be raised by a broken home where he would get less access to his son-- especially after the divorce-- and thus have less control? It was only by luck that Mulder decided to join the FBI when he was recruited out of school, whereas Jeffrey Spender had been (essentially) pushed and nudged since childhood into the FBI. If Mulder had decided against recruiting, all of CSM’s-- supposedly-- long-term plans for his son would have been for naught. And since he places so much time and energy cultivating Mulder’s interests and-- supposedly-- checkmating his moves left and right to engineer him down to the office and into the very hands of the Conspirators so that one day he might join (another post for another day), all he had to do was raise him, show him the bounties in store for him with the Syndicate, and groom him into being an intellectual mastermind on par with the best thinkers the Consortium has to offer.

On top of all that, he’d have to have known Tena without Bill knowing he knew Tena; and Tena would have had to manipulate Bill into marriage to cover up her mistake. Which would mean she is projecting a lot of anger onto Bill that belongs squarely on her own shoulders: her own children’s futures being related to this man and his dark secrets, involving herself in this mess through this man BEFORE her husband had even been recruited by this shadow group; tying herself forever to the darkness of the Conspiracy before her children were even born and she was even married. In which case: BILL was the unwitting victim, being recruited by CSM and co. to keep Tena close to her lover; and he was involved in something WAY over his head before he could even comprehend it. That could easily align with his perspective in Piper Maru and Travelers; BUT it wouldn’t align with his own self-loathing and distance, as he placed full responsibility on himself and tried to shield Tena from his work as much as possible. And it would place a more treacherous angle on Tena: woman who seduced the wrong man, covered up her mistake through marriage, kept going back to her mistake, volunteered her husband to his cause to keep Spender close and in her life, and eventually threw all blame onto Bill’s unwitting lap when CSM came to collect his dues.

While this is a great and more sinister reading, it doesn’t match up with her actions in the series:

her hatred of Spender at her 4th of July party in Two Fathers’ flashback; her hatred of him in Mulder’s Demons flashback; her hatred and fear of CSM in Talitha Cumi; and, more importantly, CSM’s reactions to her throughout the entire series. He's lovesick, but also vindictive: if Tena’s wrath weren't righteous and justified, Carl Spender would have rubbed her faults in her face and threatened to expose her to her son to keep her in line. He did none of these things; and respected her and her actions enough never to threaten or harm her.

So, ultimately: no, I don’t believe there is the wherewithal to manufacture a scenario where Tena and CSM were lover-like embracing throughout the years (too much intent and cunning involved, as well as fierce loathing from her side even before her children were abducted and the Mulder family fell apart.) No, there is no canonical weight for CSM to assume Fox Mulder is his son pre-The Sixth Extinction (as stated and shown multiple times.) No, there is no evidence to overturn his conviction that Jeffrey was his only son. No, there is not a shred of evidence to prove he and Tena Mulder had even MET prior to the Mulders’ marriage (not even in the mess up timeline of Travelers’.) So no, I do not believe he is Fox Mulder’s biological father.

OR-- and this requires stretching of the brain so vast that Mulder would have collapsed in a matter of seconds instead of days-- Tena met CSM once randomly before she married; neither thought anything of it; she becomes pregnant, assumes or passes off the baby as Bill's; and Spender doesn't remember the incident at all until he sees her picture in the barracks (CSM's flashback episode), carrying his suspicions with him from that point onward. Then Tena and he met again later, had another brief affair; and he said something she disliked and hated him ever since, keeping him away from her kids and angrily telling Bill off every time he let his friend into the family home. It would explain the long look at Tena's photo in the barracks. ...But, again, this is WILD conjecture that is a headcanon that really shouldn't be except the writers doubled down on the CSM paternity question. (AH, WELL.)

I liken this debate to a loose quote that I heard sometime while watching the show (do not quote me on this): If you repeat it often enough, a lie becomes the Truth. All evidence points to CSM not being Fox Mulder’s biological father; but everyone-- the show’s writers included-- repeat that he is; and now it’s become a truth of its own. You decide which side has more merit~.

In Summary

Tena Mulder is back, having no one else there to make medical decisions for her son. Seeing him so vulnerable breaks down that resistant wall she’d built up since Demons. Tena sees Mulder has no hope without the enemy's help; so she signs him over to CSM.

Also: there is more evidence against CSM being Mulder’s biological dad than for it. It all comes down which side of the discussion you deem more meritable.

WYWH's ch12 is currently in smut purgatory, where a lot of my stories die. i've been pretty open on here about how much i dislike writing smut. especially angsty, high-stakes smut. there's so many surfacing emotions to tackle on top of the usual slog of "gotta write this sex act that i've already written nth times over and use different! and unique! ways to dance around describing the same five body parts for paragraphs on paragraphs, and make it special to this work because god forbid i use the same description for eddie's voice as i did in another fic!" (i know other people, even other writers, don't care about the minute stuff to that degree, but i do.)

within the TYP universe, i have it's continuation series, and a few themed oneshots i want to do once the main story is over. outside of TYP, i have a short cryptid hunter au that's really calling my name if i can work on it during fall/winter, then my next longfic: the linecook au.

i want to return to WYWH sooner rather than later, especially since i haven't gotten to write action scenes in so long, i just have to get past the smut and the uh... canon events of s4 first. 😐

After being all brave and sassy with Jude Jon definitely has learned a lesson or two about meeting up with avatars, although this one seems a lot nicer. Offering him a cup of tea instead laughing at him and threatening him.

MIKE "The air… it doesn’t… leave your lungs like you expect it to." - I hate falling, so I never did anything like bungee or something like that… But sometimes when it's super stormy outside it feels like the storm blows the air you want to breath out of your mouth. Terrible feeling.

"The part that always bothered me was how I didn’t remember it. Not really." - Ohhh, does the "not really" flood already slowly start here? I know in S4 there's sooo many of them, and we heard it in S1 and 2 also a couple of times.

But the shape it had taken more rightly belonged to the sky. Daisy is so brutal… Kicking Crew a few additional times just to be sure… And we see some of her apologist nature. Tricking herself into only hunting monsters.

JON "So… so what now? You kill us? …" DAISY "You think he’s going to save you?" JON "What? What, no –" [GUNSHOT] [JON CRIES OUT] - again, Daisy. Is. So. Brutal. She just shot a dude right in front of Jon. Because it's fun to see his fear…

DAISY "One packet cigarettes, Silk Cut. One lighter, gold, spiderweb design. Hm." - Oh hi there you sneaky little thing! Also Jon totally smoking again…

God, hearing Jon gurgling and whimpering is so hard to listen to.

DAISY "You been following me, Basira?" - Basira is Daisy's soft spot… How her voice wavers here.

DAISY "You don’t know what he is. You don’t know what it’s like to have your secrets pulled out like teeth, just because he asked?" - On my first listen I didn't understand what all this "stop asking question" and then they just answer them as all about. This is when it finally clicked.

JON "I thi- I thi- I think it was Elias." DAISY "Yeah. Well he’s on my list too." - Lol, that tone in Daisy's voice.

JON "What about Mike?" DAISY "Who? Oh. Grab a spade." - Can you imagine, fours days ago Jon got his palm completely burned and now this murder cop tells him to dig a hole to bury the person she just shot in front of him or she'll shoot him too if she's merciful or cut his throat if she's not.

Bless, I gotta say I'm proud of my character tag for Nancy too :P God this always happens where I have a ton of songs that remind me of a certain character, but as soon as someone asks they all just fly right out of my brain XD Casually gonna consult my giant playlist of 80s music that I tend to use specifically for Stranger Things inspo; and the first one I found that gives me Nancy energy is One Way or Another by Blondie? Because she's so driven and nothing is gonna stop her either from getting to the bottom of things or from, y'know, popping a cap in whatever monster is threatening the town this time around :P

9- What’s your favourite headcanon(s) for this character?

OOH this is a tough one too because I think Nancy is such a well-rounded, fleshed out character in canon already? But just for me personally, I like to headcanon that even though she doesn't wear it anymore really, she still has her little ballet slipper necklace that she wore in s1 and I believe in s2, because I love it and she deserves to let herself onto one thing from her previous teenage naivety, to know that not everything about that part of her life was bad?

15- Favourite line of theirs?

I swear Nancy has a badass line every single season :P "I want to kill it," "let's burn that lab to the ground," et al XD I also have a personal fondness for her little "screw that" monologue at the shooting range with Jonathan in s1 <3 And, of course, her scene with Max in s4 when she makes her sawed-off shotgun 8D

scandal s4 thoughts are not that far from my scandal s2 thoughts. i still like olivia w jake over fitz BUT jake was a cartoon villain for half of s3 so this is questionable. basically though she should just fuck whichever one of them is closest at any given moment... which she already does, god bless.

charlie is still my blorbo. i vibe w charlie/quinn and quinn/huck grates on me like nothing else. harrison dying... ummmm sorry dude but you did nothing for this show (i did not pay attention to his subplot at all last season sorry!). abby is slightly more bearable now. still love david but he needs more. mellie is still just good tv in her grief era. cyrus is also just good tv i think every show needs an evil gay old man. why is portia de rossi here now

I have tried to match things up with those available in this archive with little success. The original repack for Season 4 points to another release thread which has the original server and client files. I'm working with Season 4 given that's what my original tutorial is intended.
