Anime Recs Pt 2
Any BL fan knows that sports anime is all about the homoerotic tension between the MC, his team players and his rivals 🤌🏼 trust this genre to serve in both aesthetics and feels - which means it deserves its own list! I tried to include a little bit of everything from hidden gems like Ryman’s Club to big hits like Haikyu. Most of these have 🌈 vibes if you squint (sometimes not that hard) with YoI being more intentional about it. And for those who love found family like me, you can’t go wrong with 1, 2 or 6. I hope everyone can get something for their tastes and find catharsis as they cheer for these pretty boys. This is the second part of my anime rec series, you can find the first list here. Enjoy!
1. Backflip!! 🤸🏻♂️
Summary: Shotaro Futaba loved sports, but was never good enough. But watching a group of gymnasts in the park and seeing them in a gymnastics tournament, he decides to join their school and become part of the gymnastic team. With new members, Shotaro and Ryoya Misato, the team aims for the upcoming Inter-High tournament.
2. Big Windup! ⚾️
Summary: The story follows the story of Ren Mihashi, a pitcher who was blamed by his middle school team for their string of losses, and as a result suffers from low self-esteem and transfers to a different high school. There, the school's first baseball team is being formed and Mihashi reluctantly joins as their Ace Pitcher.
3. Free! 🏊♂️
Summary: Free is set in the town of Iwatobi, Japan, which is based on Iwami, Tottori. The story is centered on high school student Haruka Nanase, a gifted swimmer. After encountering his childhood rival, Rin Matsuoka from Samezuka Academy, he and his friends revitalize Iwatobi High School's swim team.
4. Haikyu!! 🏐
Summary: Junior high school student, Shoyo Hinata, becomes obsessed with volleyball after catching a glimpse of Karasuno High School playing in the Nationals on TV. Of short stature himself, Hinata is inspired by a player the commentators nickname 'The Little Giant', Karasuno's short but talented wing spiker.
5. Kuroko no Basket 🏀
Summary: The story follows Kuroko's journey to success with his team, with most of the episodes being based around one or part of one challenging game, in which Kuroko and his teammates, most notably Taiga Kagami, perform plays and have short conversations with opposing players in the heat of the match.
6. Run with the Wind 🏃♂️
Summary: After abandoning competitive running back in high school, Kakeru Kurahara has no desire to return to the sport during his college years. But when an impromptu shoplifting-related sprint brings his talent to the attention of Haiji Kiyose, he soon finds himself wrapped up in an adventure he never imagined.
7. Salaryman’s Club 🏸
Summary: The story follows Mikoto Shiratori, a recently unemployed badminton prodigy who has the ability of foresight. After getting fired from Mitsuhoshi Banking for losing a match for their company sports badminton team, he gets recruited by Sunlight Beverage to play for their team and become a sales rep.
8. SK8 the Infinity 🛹
Summary: In Okinawa, a group of hardcore skaters participate in a secret, no-holds-barred competition after midnight known as "S", racing each other on skateboards down a winding road carved out of an abandoned mine. Reki, a high school sophomore and hardcore skater, takes new transfer student Langa to S one night, and ends up pulling him into the world of skateboarding.
9. Tsurune 🏹
Summary: Minato joins the Kazemai High School Archery Club and along with his old friends and new teammates, Nanao Kisaragi and Kaito Onogi, they aim for winning the prefectural tournament while trying to overcome their doubts and shortcomings.
10. Yuri!!! On ICE ⛸️
Summary: Japanese figure skater Yuri Katsuki faces a crushing defeat during the Grand Prix finals and heads home, unsure of whether or not he wishes to continue his skating career. After a video of Yuri mimicking Russian figure skater Victor Nikiforov's routine goes viral, Victor decided to become Yuri's coach, much to the dismay of his coach, his fans, and his fellow Russian skater Yuri Plisetsky.

- Movies: a Blend of truly random shit that’s somewhat nostalgic but also a crackpot of dumb bullshittery that fits his persona wholly and completely. It’s funny and stupid and clever and smarmy. Just like him!! Myc watches: Animal House, Fantastic Fungi, Grown Ups, Don’t Look Up, Monty Python and the Holy Grail + The Life of Brian, The Usual Suspects, Harry Potter franchise, When Harry Met Sally, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Omen, The Birds, Casablanca, and Chucky.
- TV: i feel that he and Andre hang out and watch shit together but mainly talk shit, like get high or just sit around on a couch and absolutely pick apart whatever stupid shitbirds are running around on the screen. They’ll also make rituals of watching certain shows together and if they tv-cheat they get PISSED. Mutual pining, mutual pining, mutual pining bayyyybee. Also my unpopular opinion is that I usually prefer couples who are similar, which is apparently “Birds of a Feather” in TV tropes language, and I think well done they’re more satisfying than Opposites Attract.

6. Do they go out often or prefer to stay indoors?
Gale’s probably more of a homebody than Delvyre, but also a year of self-isolation means he’s a bit restless for social events. Then again, their time on the road I think has earned them some rest and relaxation.

Magic — studying it, researching it, testing it out. They’re a powerhouse. I also think they enjoy, like, live theater and shows. Also if that High Rollers stream solidified anything for me, it’s that they both enjoy getting pampered, so spa days/bath days are common.

12. Who gets up the earliest? Who has the worst sleep schedule? Who is the sleepiest?
They’re both night owls who like to sleep in. I do think Del’s sleep schedule is less organized though. So on a rare occasion, she might actually get up early. But Gale is not up before 10 am if he doesn’t have to be (and usually Delvyre sleeps in too). They also both go to bed like past midnight for sure.
14. Who does fashion shows after a mall trip and who watches and compliments them?
Both <3 <3 They like to look good. Gale spends more time in the shoe store.

Going to a live performance of some sorts, or a lecture series, or a museum. And then to a nice restaurant, where they can discuss what they just saw/learned and sample good food and wine.

Jewelry, for sure. They’re both little magpies, and love shiny rings and earrings and necklaces and what not. Delvyre favors gold and Gale favors silver though. Also, Del probably steals his bigger robes and snuggles with them.
22. How do they apologize after arguments?
Del will get very very passionately mad (insert that parks and rec scene where ben is like arguing with you is like arguing with the sun), but once all the anger is out of her, she’ll try to apologize right away and make things better. I think Gale isn’t as explosive, but he’ll need some more time to cool off/process his feelings. Earlier on, before they get the handle of, like, being in a relationship, I think he tries to smooth things over right away but that just kinda makes his annoyances fester a bit, so they both learn together how to apologize the way that makes the other feel heard.
24. What are their favorite places to kiss on their partner(s)? What are their favorite types of kisses?
Gale likes kissing her neck and cheek and forehead :3. Del likes kissing his shoulder and chest (right where the orb mark is). Also not really a kiss, but she enjoys torturing him with raspberries on his stomach which he pretends to hate, but is reduced to a fit of giggles.
26. Do they have any pets or kids?
Eventually have a couple of kids - probably two or three? They are very indulgent parents who think their kids are the most special amazing talented kids ever. Tara also eventually has a brood of Tressym kitties, which eventually become companions to their kids <3
28. What’s something that reminds them of their partner(s)? Do they have anything on them daily as a reminder (a photo, phone background, tattoo, clothing/accessory, etc)?
Look, I gave them the matching true love rings you find on some corpses in Act 2, and they are never ever taking them off <3 Probably have something matching. Del probably gets some sort of tattoo to symbolize their relationship eventually (some fire and ice combo thing idk a rune or something).

Favourite colour: I change my mind on this all the time, but red and green are both recurring favourites. I tend to like darker, saturated tones for both, and also veering towards yellow more than white when going lighter. Think garnet over ruby, peridot over emerald?
Last song: Me and the Devil by Soap&Skin. I’ve exploring songs with a kind of dark folklore vibe on youtube? See also It Goes Dark by Elk Eyes (found that one via the show Midnight Texas), Saint with a Fever by Patrick Park (found via a Miracles fanvid waay back when). For a classic with this sort of vibe, Sinnerman by Nina Simone.
Last movie: God, when was the last time I sat and watched a movie? It’s actually been a while. Nothing new either, I think I was mostly watching classic B-movies, also on youtube, like 1946’s Shock with Vincent Price (despite the name and star, it’s not a horror movie, it’s a noir thriller about a woman who witnesses a murder and winds up under treatment for shock by the murderer himself, who realises what she would have seen to put her in this state. So, um. Be careful if you have medical triggers? But it’s fun seeing Vincent Price in one of his, shall we say, more subtle roles).
Currently watching: I’ve been quite enjoying Legends of Avantris’ Icebound D&D campaign. There is one particular arc that I keep wanting to scream at people about, because it is such a fantastic use of a couple of creature types and abilities in conjunction to make an absolutely horrifying and icily logical plot. A+ DMing, excellent excellent excellent use of creatures.
Other stuff I watched this year: I’ve been extremely low effort and low maintenance this year, in that I’ve mostly been following Minecraft SMPs and TTRPG playthroughs and calling it good? I haven’t watched an actual TV show in ages. I’ve also found Cinema Cities youtube channel and have been using her videos as recs to look up classic noir and horror films, which has actually been quite a lot of fun (she’s how I found Shock above).
Shows I dropped this year: All of them, apparently? Well, no, it’s mostly that I haven’t picked up any new shows this year. For a couple of years, I think. It’s been a while.
Last book: I semi-recently went on a buying spree through the local second hand bookshop, and I’ve been working my way through my haul. There were a couple of the Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell in there, which is quite fun if you like military sci-fi. I also got a few horror short story anthologies, including the first of the Black Wings of Cthulhu collections, and a couple of nice collections of ghost stories.
Currently reading: Are we counting solo play D&D adventures? Because I’m currently on Drums at Daggerford with my cleric/ranger, and I am continuously checking to see if the next book in the Eight Petals Argent series has come out yet.

if you've already finished the first part of the 2004 run, then just skip to issue #13, Mother Russia; Kitchen Irish is dog shit, not even worth the read. I wouldn't continue after #60 which is where ennis exits as the series' writer, however #75 is one of those multiple writers, multiple artists collaborative issues that i remember liking a lot. It gets better as you go, and, critically, the way frank is written is a huge departure from how ennis initially characterized him
I'd also recommend his limited series (Platoon, Soviet), and even more so his one-offs, Tyger and Born, but DO NOT read Born unless you've gotten through MAX. Tyger is about Frank in his childhood, a version of which imo is leagues better than 2022's current mess.

Again, this is still a series that contains ennis' -isms, which are sometimes even more dire since he isn't limited to keeping his writing to being pg-13. I say this while having cried over this run multiple times, and feeling gutted after reading Born. I hope you're able to give it a chance despite any misgivings towards ennis 🫰🫡 ganbare

My dislike of Ennis tbh started with Preacher--I tried to read that after watching some of the TV show and it was just so relentlessly dedicated to coming up with the most horrible and fucked up things one person could conceivably do to another that I just could not get through it. As far as the Punisher goes, I've only read the 2000 run and a little of the 2004 run and mostly did not like it, but I will give the 2004 run another try based on this.
The current Punisher run's take on Frank's childhood is a mess. I think its only redeeming quality in that respect is the mention of the Hand priestess fabricating memories, so I'm honestly hoping it all gets retconned. If Frank was always destined to be the Punisher, then like . . . what was the point of his family dying in the park.

tagged by @dreamerinsilico <3 and yes please, i love to talk and procrastinate. this may be tough, though, because i have a terrible tv attrition rate and routinely just never finish things
1. hannibal - i watched it as it aired (i was still in high school and had my parents really didn't get why i wanted to watch it) and then promptly forgot about it for a while and then it crept out of the back of my brain and smacked me with a giant anvil. and now, here i am
2. chernobyl - you know how some people put on parks & rec when they're doing something and they just need some background noise? i do the same thing with the chernobyl miniseries. no, i will not be taking questions at this time
3. house m.d. - this show has aged like milk. it got its claws in me at the tender age of 9 or 10 and for a long while, it made me want to be a doctor. i've still seen all of it multiple times and have had many a merry laugh at all the ridiculous ddxing
4. broadchurch - another bummer, but olivia coleman is just so good. this is the only show i've ever seen where i thought "hey the leads could get together and i wouldn't even be mad about it," which if you know anything about me, will blow your mind
5. dark - i love this show. there's so much attention to detail and it was such a breath of fresh air to have a show that rewarded you paying attention and was actively solvable in a way that didn't feel cheap
6. haven - old, terrible scifi channel show, how i love you. and how you've been a key comp-title for at least four novel projects now, but let's just say i'm glad i didn't stick around past season 3. weird, supernatural small towns get me every time
7. the alienist - i really like period/historical shows of really any kind, but often they're romance-centered, which for me? boo. but this show sold me on the limited series book adaptation as a concept. also the music f u c k s
8. the knick - one of the only medical shows ever to show the fascia during surgery scenes :3 and for that alone, it goes on the list. that one fact, ignoring everything else in the show, should tell you all you need to know about me 😛
i wish i could give answers that would make me look better or more interesting or let's face it, less goddamn depressing, but alas, these are them. i'm also a serial rewatcher, so it's rare that i pick up something new
i really struggled to pick shows 6-8, so i reached back pretty far into my watch history (and i'm 100% sure i've forgotten something), but i really want to check out some of @dreamerinsilico's historical picks 👀👀👀👀

Update 05/06/2022
Good evening!
Firstly, some bits of media I've very much enjoyed over the past 2 weeks:
Bloods (2021, cr. Nathan Byron & Samson Kayo) - Bloods is fucking excellent, it's a sitcom about paramedics starring Samson Kayo (Oluwande of OFMD) and Jane Horrocks, and it's so fucking funny. Really, really tightly written with so much good, strong character work, lots of commentary on paramedicine and also on NHS issues whilst being so fast-paced, excellent soundtrack, and just in general a real triumph. Also appearances from Nathan Foad (Lucius in OFMD) being painfully entitled and awkward as Jane Horrocks' son and every time he's on screen I cringe from my soul to my hole, he's horribly effective in it. ALSO SAMSON KAYO SINGS AND IT'S GORGEOUS, and every single person who watches this will undoubtedly fall in love with Daryl and Darrell. Fucking hype for S3 next year.
Truth Seekers (2020, cr. Nick Frost, Simon Pegg, James Serafinowicz & Nat Saunders) - This is also comedy but with horror - it was cancelled after one season, unfortunately, but it's still worth a watch! Also featuring Samson Kayo as a protag. Truth Seekers does some really cool stuff with subverting horror tropes as you'd expect from anything with Pegg & Frost at the forefront, but it's also just genuinely funny and quite heartfelt in places while really doing some layered, subtle work around perceptions of abuse + mental health issues. That latter isn't the core theme of the show but is continuous throughout, and while the show didn't grip me as other stuff has, I've really been enjoying that aspect.
Westworld (1973, dir. Michael Crichton) - I hadn't seen this before and watched this in preparation for starting the TV series, which I'm guessing will be more to my taste, but I thought it held up surprisingly well for being fifty years old at this point. So many 70s movies, especially sci-fi and adventure movies don't really push my buttons, but this one is quite character-centred and has some charming homoeroticism. It lacks a bit of urgency, and if you've seen Jurassic Park, you already know Michael Crichton's anxieties around nature's unpredictability vs tech malfunctions vs amusement parks, and like-- Westworld says nothing that isn't said better or more adeptly in JP, but I still thought it was good!
I've also been playing Rune Factory 5 on my Switch and loving it so far, and I really enjoyed this interview with Con O'Neill. I also watched S4 of Stranger Things this week, and if you made the decision to stop off watching it after they started doing the anti-Russian stuff and are like "hm, maybe it's doing better and I should get back into it", you absolutely should not. The writing is truly very bad in so many places, and while it's adequate as background viewing it's just... Yeesh. A lot of choices are made. Different choices would have been better.

i hate this. i have so many movies and tv shows that i adore, so here's a brief list of whatever i can think of atm. movies: america's sweethearts, my best friend's wedding, mamma mia!, you've got mail, anything studio ghibli, shrek series (or honestly most dreamworks), anastasia, white chicks, juno, easy a, stuck in love, perks of being a wallflower, just like heaven, & honestly way too many other movies. tv shows: bob's burgers, criminal minds (up until s12), NCIS, kim's convenience, Inuyasha, furuba, tgcf, love island UK, the good place, AHS, friends, parks and rec, and others?? i blank on shows v easily oops.
