My AO3 Wrapped: 16 Drarry Recs
This year I’ve embraced a change of pace and read way less than I intended to. This made me feel a bit disconnected from fandom but also allowed me to put this list together in record time so let’s not complain too much 😂 this is shorter and lacking my usual commentary but I didn’t want to break the tradition of sharing my fave reads of the year! Be it for their creativity or peak romance, these 16 amazing fics made my heart beat faster and got me even more in love with Drarry. I’ve read most of them in the first half of the year and it was interesting to see so many fics over 40k, as my usual sweet spot is 10k - 20k. I love the mix of tropes featured here and am very excited to rec authors I’m reading for the first time. ps: I haven’t included any Erised fics since the fest is still ongoing.
Thank you dear creators for sharing so many brilliant works with us this year! 2023 wasn’t my best year fandom-wise, but life has been so generous in other areas that I can’t help but feel humbled today. Oh my god ok so there is this patisserie here that's absolutely my fave and I've been obsessed with their peach flavoured cream puff , it's just so bloody amazing. I tried a new dessert of theirs today, a citrus tart (photo under the cut!) and that was so good too!! They also do a wonderful passionfruit and mango mochi 😌
To make! I don't much but when I do, I love to make mug brownies and cinnamon cigars :)

3. favourite breakfast food
Eggs! I love eggs. I don't eat them very often for breakfast, though. My typical breakfast is slice of bread with honey and tahini (which I can't have enough of) and occasionally some spanakopita or tyropita (ready made, I don't bake it myself. Too much hassle). If I do have an egg in the morning, it's usually a boiled one.
Fried eggs are my fave, though. I drool now thinking of them. I often have them for a quick lunch or dinner when my fridge is empty.
7. things that always make you smile
Cats; my niece; being on a beach, sunbathing and swimming; the TGCF donghua; gorgeous fanart; cloudporn; reading a lovely comment on my fic.
20. a skill you’d like to learn
This is embarrassing. Although I passed my driving test over 15 years ago, I haven't been behind the wheel since, and I can't remember how to even start a car, let alone change gears. The clutch is the devil lol
I haven't needed a car until recently, but now it's becoming more and more necessary so I need to woman up and go get myself a car and some refresher lessons.
If it wasn't for this necessity, I'd prob answer singing or drawing as I'm crap at both but I really wish I wasn't :))

Hermione told them about Dennis Creevy’s new movie because it was part memoir and “Ron cried for hours,” so they watched it and Draco cried all over Harry’s shoulder over what he wished he could say to his mother. Things like, “I wish I understood” and “I don’t know why you still love me” and “I don’t know why I still love you too, but I want you to know, I do.”
Last month Draco watched a movie with Pansy about two friends who fell apart when one fled to France during some war that wasn’t theirs. “I was seventeen. I didn’t have a choice,” the actress had said, her lower lip a tremble. Pansy sat unblinking at the screen, so still she must have been holding her breath. Later she said the movie was “interesting”, and Draco agreed. Then Pansy said, “Is that a new coat?”
Now Draco wondered what she was holding in, afraid to say. If she had let anything out, maybe he would have said, “It’s okay, I forgive you for leaving. I understand.” But she didn’t so Draco said it to the credits roll instead, after she went ahead to the toilet.
Draco was sick of having conversations with movies when the people he wanted to talk to most were sitting right next to him. He turned to Harry. He wanted to say, “I wish you understood me half as much as this stranger’s movie.” But of course he didn’t. Instead, he said, “I hate Dennis Creevy.”

Draco didn’t fancy waking up a portrait. Still, it could’ve be worse — he could’ve woken up cold, like he did in Azkaban. Or worse — he could’ve woken up seventeen again —
But all that was over. Now, he was, dead. A portrait. Free of prison and Father and everything but dimension. Candlelight warmed the oils of his cheeks. He sighed, exhaling the last breath of life, before peering beyond his frame.
A bespectacled man sat looking up at Draco from a green velvet chair, newspaper open in his lap. “Hello,” the man said. “I was wondering if you’ll ever wake up.”

And wasn't that nice, to own something long enough to fix it.
The little digital clock had been a wedding gift from Arthur. Draco had never seen a timepiece in the shape of an apple before, let alone one that winked away the minutes in big, blocky numbers. Holding it in his palm, it felt too much like holding a beating heart. And what of those minutes slipping between his fingers? How many did he have left — was he doing everything he could, to enjoy them? Was he going to regret today like he regretted the first twenty years of his life?
The world got better before it got worse again. He gained a mother then lost a father — well, he couldn't make everyone happy. But then one of Father's old friends — one of the nastier ones — ran for Minister and won, beating Granger, and, well — what was he to do? He only had one ballot. It hurt if he thought ahead too much so he thought he would live in the present. Minute by minute until the minutes hurt too, so he went smaller, to the second, the half-second, the quarter. His whole life they said, think small. Live in the now. What can you do? You're only one person. Why think ahead when you could count the seconds instead.
The world got worse before it got better again. Almost before he knew it, it was summer, the kind of summer that sat heavy in his bones and time itself slowed; one minute blending into the next until the numbers faded completely off the little apple clock. Draco found it sitting dead on the shelf and the first thing he did was close his eyes. He breathed in very softly, his heart beat in his ears, building louder and louder until it crashed, like a wave, then washed away. What he felt was akin to relief, but more. It was like he was waking up from a deep hibernation. He could hear the birds now, and Harry, doing something in the garden, and his first thought was that if he died in this very moment he would die happy. And yet at the same time, his mind wandered outside, wanting more. He pictured the dahlias at their showiest; the peach tree, once a small specimen in Snape's study, now tall and bearing fruit. How grand the tree would grow in another ten years, gnarled branches like the whorls of gray that had already begun to take root in Harry's hair. Draco would be happy to die that day too, and the day after that, until the days blended into a lifetime, impossible to count.
Draco was at his desk when Harry came in later that afternoon. Granger was campaigning again, her relentlessly bushy hair all over the front page of the Prophet. "She's going to win this time, I know it," Draco said, looking up when he heard Harry's footsteps approach.
Harry held the broken clock in one hand and two batteries in the other. He turned the clock around and took out the old batteries before sliding in the new ones. Then he turned the clock back around again. The numbers flashed 00:00 before he set them to a time closer to but not quite "now". It was a few minutes slow. Draco didn't correct him. Together, they watched the minute blink forward. Then Harry said, "All better now, isn't it?", and he was right.

Another Halloween
Draco was already having a bad day when Harry Potter showed up at Pansy’s flat. Draco loved Pansy but she could be a pandering swot when it came to wanting people to like her. “I’m tired of fighting,” Pansy said when Draco accused her of selling out to the golden Gryffindicks. Then she said, “Ron does have a rather nice cock,” and fluttered her falsies at the oafish freckle from across the room.
“You’re disgusting,” Draco said. He readjusted his peridot jewel circlet and pointedly did not look five inches to Weasley’s left, at you-know-who. Not You-Know-Who, but you know who, that giant pillock who vanquished You-Know — oh never mind.
(Side note: isn’t it rather funny how vanquished is a euphemism for killed? As if utterly destroy the existence of something terrible was more palpable than simply killing it, though either would accomplish the task equally well.)
Pansy bristled, sneering. “I’m not the one pandering to Granger in the house-elf costume—”
“I’m not a house-elf, I’m a hot fantasy Tolkien elf!”
“—but you don’t see me shaming you for it. Be a pal for once, slap on a smile and help me get laid.” She said the final words behind gritted teeth, as the Golden Gryffinduo had begun ambling over.
“Nice party,” Weasley said. He was wearing a 100% polyester red M&M costume, except he’d flipped the costume upside down so the M was a W. Clever, for a Weasley. Clever particularly when standing next to Potter, who was dressed in the same vampire costume he had worn to Blaise’s party last year. Not that Draco kept tabs on what Potter wore. Merlin, no. Draco was about to say something snide just to accentuate the point (to himself), but then he noticed Potter was also looking at him. Rather intensely.
“What is it,” Draco said, tucking a nervous strand of hair behind his artificially pointy ears. “Have I got something—”
“Your ears are as pointy as your chin,” Potter said. Then he blushed. Which was so surprising that even human motormouth Pansy paused in what she was saying to Weasley (something about she’d bought every last plastic cauldron from Tesco’s). After a beat, she abruptly grabbed a freckled arm and said, “Come, let’s have you buy me a drink.”
“But they’re your punch cauldrons,” Weasley said, pointing to the plastic cauldrons that Draco and Pansy had filled only an hour earlier with promises of a good time (fruit punch and patron).
“You can Venmo me,” Pansy said. She led the man away with an exasperated glance back at Draco, who smirked at her until he realised she’d left him alone. With Potter. Who was still determinedly staring at Draco with a bewildered expression on his face.
“Are you high?” Draco asked. Harry—sorry, Potter—certainly looked high, but that could be from the red lights strobing over his face . The entire flat was lit up like a club, which was to say, not very lit at all (Pansy had read somewhere that red lighting not only diminished the appearance of pimples but also stoked libidos).
“I can’t get high,” Potter said.
“What?”
“Yeah, I know, it’s a weird side effect of dying and coming back to life. Something about the resurrection stone counters all poisons, and most drugs are unfortunately a form of poison—”
—but Draco was thinking about last Halloween, when they’d been drunk and Draco had blown him in Blaise’s bathroom, or the time when they’d smoked so much pink kush, Potter had said he loved Draco, but of course that couldn’t be true, because Harry (sorry, Potter) had been high, except he couldn’t get high because of course he couldn’t, he was Harry bloody Potter—
“I’m too sober for this conversation,” Draco said.
Potter smiled back, a little dumbly, mostly sad. That made Draco sad too, which was also sad.
“You sure you can’t get.. uh, intoxicated?” Draco asked.
“Not really, no.”
“Then why do you come to these things?”
Potter stared at Draco just long enough for Draco to realise he was a fool for asking. But Draco still couldn’t really believe that Harry would be interested in him. Then he thought — fuck it, it was Halloween. He’d believe anything once. So he said, “Want to get out of here?”

"It's just a summer fling," Draco had told Pansy in June, but in January the weather turned a handsome silver and Harry handsomer still, his silhouette cutting across Draco's bedroom walls like an omen, a prophecy, except good. Wanted. Draco'd forgotten the word for the anticipation of good things, things that didn't rot or sour over time. His parents married for love but had long slept in separate bedrooms, and Draco never slept in another man's bed long enough to fall asleep; not before Harry, who was the exception of all exceptions in Draco's unexceptional life.
"The light is beautiful when it shines on you," Draco said when the sun dusted gold over Harry's dark lashes. Harry replied with something not funny enough to retell, and yet Draco couldn't stop laughing until Harry joined in too, and off they fell, down the rabbit hole into that weightless, belly-flipping kind of love.

HD Erised 2023 - Sitp recs
Hello hello! I’ve been trying to get back into the reading zone and Erised came at the perfect time. I thought I’d share my favorites as I slowly make my way through it, mostly to keep track of my reads and also because it’s been so long since I did a fest list (please don’t mind my very much incomplete Fan Fair list while I kick off another one 🙈 so much to read, so little time!). My first Five Faves of the year. It's been A While, I know. I have drafts for others in the pipeline, and then @oknowkiss went and posted two bangers within a couple of weeks and it all went out the window because I just had to go all oknowrec, ya know? Look, whenever I read anything that I ADORE, the first people to hear about it are always my buddies @tackytigerfic and @sitp-recs - and you know I mean it when it's full on caps lock raving DMs - see also @wolfpants' The Hollow and @moonflower-rose's Pissing For England (reclists for both authors hopefully coming soon!) I swear I must have spent a full week going on about the first Elaine fic I read, any day now. I mean, truly, I went through all the emotions with that one: elation at finding such an amazing author, grief at my own inadequacy, anger that it was over - it was a rollercoaster, believe me.
Elaine's turn of phrase is always spot on, her inventiveness in world-building is second to none, and her fics somehow seem to retain this fabulous lightness of tone that keeps things just on the right side of heartbreakingly raw. She's undeniably hugely talented, and now has a fabulous AO3 back-catalogue for you to sink your teeth into, so please waste no more time in checking out her fics!

these are some of the lovely folks who have introduced me to fics that broke my heart, took me on vast emotional journeys, and made me laugh my butt off. each of these reccers have different ways of presenting insightful (and often humorous) commentary, pointing out all the best bits of fic, and reminding me of all the lovely reasons I’m in this fandom. here’s a shout out and a thank you to these brilliant rec’cers! please thank your faves in the comments too <3
@sitp-recs - Witty, thoughtful, and oh-so-carefully worded, each of Liv's recs brings out the best in the fics described. Each time I see a new post, it’s a must-read! Liv creates such a kind and affirming environment that feels so special. Her themed weeks have left me utterly weak, going back to the masterlists over and over whenever I need a new suggestion.
@eat-yearn-cry - From when I saw the first four masterlists floating around to the absolutely fantastic posts now, I feel so lucky we get eat-yearn-cry's suggestions! Each of her recs is brilliant and informed, hilarious and sometimes sarcastic, and so clearly her. It’s an absolute joy to hear these thoughts, it always sends me straight to whatever fic she's poured her heart out about.
@dewitty1 - Dewitty has such excellent taste in fics, and always picks the best excerpts to share to get my interest piqued. I love seeing her masterlists across my dash and getting to see both fics i’ve read and loved and ones I know I must check out based on her opinion.
@thedrarrylibrarian - The ex-library worker and lover of organizing in me absolutely swoons at this blog full of gorgeously-tagged posts. I can see how much work is put into curating an excellent repository of fic, and gosh do I love it! I'm so looking forward to more of the Happy Hour series.
@drarryspecificrecs - Truly, I do not know how this blog manages everything, from fest recaps to daily recs, to answering endless questions and searching for fics. I remain in awe daily at the amount of excellent and beautifully organized content this incredible blog shares with us.
@dragontamerdame - Though I know Ash is no longer doing recs (and looking at their art, I cannot complain, what a beautiful application of their skill!) I still find myself revisiting some of their old lists because they are so well put together and so detailed, each one feels unbelievably comprehensive.
@dictacontrion - I’ve been a fan of Dicta's writing almost as long as I’ve read drarry fic, and I came onto tumblr this year to find a vast trove of daily excerpts and longer fic rec masterposts. Each and every rec is truly a treasure!
@hogwartsfirebolt - I absolutely adore HogwartsFirebolt's Netfics rec list, not only because it features some of my favorite fics, but what a brilliant way of sharing the fic love? While the taste in fics alone is impeccable, I loved the way this is put together -- I wish I could open up Netfics rn and dive into some of these shared faves!
@onbeinganangel - Not only does Marion share her beautiful embroidery with us, but she has chosen to use it to recommend fics! From the soft cotton of her What We Do In the Shadows rec to the threads of the others, they always make me run straight to ao3, and the fic recs are never amiss.
@zeziliazink - Zezilia's ‘fandom classics’ series, part 1 and part 2, genuinely feel like penguin classics I could pull right off the shelf, plus they’re full of utterly stellar drarry fics! I love how Zezilia has applied an excellent definition of 'classic' here and I wish I had a shelf full of fics like this.
@rockmarina - I've found myself cackling over Rockmarina's meme fic recs on more than one occasion, enjoying them for both the funny and the intensely dramatic fics. They immediately make me want to open ao3 because they are always, without fail, an absolute joy.
@queercore-curriculum - I'm not sure if Queercore would be considered a fic reccer, but each time I see one of the gorgeous, gorgeous binds on my dash, I have two overwhelming thoughts: 1) oh my god, wow, look at that (and that, and that, and that, as I scroll through each stunning image) and 2) I must read this fic right away if someone has spent so much time binding it. We are so lucky to get to see Queercore's craft!

I’m so excited to share something a little bit different for Happy Hour today! A fellow Drarry Rec Blog, @sitp-recs graciously agreed to host today’s Happy Hour! So I get to sit back and relax as she shares her thoughts about a fic that made her happy this week!
Sitp recommenced the Autumn Drarry Drabbles series by @peachpety (28,483 words total, rating varies from G to E).
Without further ado, I’m going to take off my hosting responsibilities, pour a butterbeer, and let Sitp tell you about the fic herself! Here’s what she had to say:
I’ve been wanting to rec this fantastic collection for a while because @peachpety delivers the best kind of comfort food and these have been saving me on rough days. So when the lovely Librarian invited me to write this week’s Happy Hour rec I didn’t think twice! I also wanted to take this opportunity to celebrate Peach, not only as a fabulous author who writes masterfully all kinds of genres, but also as one of the kindest members of our community. If it’s up to me, they’ll get all the love and appreciation they deserve!
This autumn drabbles collection is a refreshing and precious gift to the fandom, and everyone going through a busy or stressful week should treat themselves this Friday! The 31 short stories show Harry and Draco falling in love and falling together in the most varied, charming scenarios and I appreciate that many of these stories include their closest friends as a cheerful and supportive crew. The setting, the characterization, the dialogue! Everything is carefully well thought and executed, packing a lot of emotion and character despite the short word count. I’m amazed at peach’s ability to explore so many different prompts going from non-magical AUs to meet-cute and established relationship, always maintaining a light tone and those soft and sexy romance vibes, my favorite brand of Drarry these days. All prompts are autumn-inspired and fill me with gentle warmth, soft nostalgia and bubbling feels. I strongly suggest reading all the ficlets in a row!
I loved collaborating with Sitp for this list because she managed to rec something that I haven’t yet read by an author I also love! And maybe if we ask her nicely, she’ll tell us more about her favorites drabbles from this collection! Definitely go check out her blog and give her lots of love too for being such a fabulous host of this week’s Happy Hour!
