*so before I go into this, I just have to say, I don't believe that NHIE is good desi rep, it showcases Devi as the main indian character with complete and utter hate for her own culture, and that would've been perfectly fine if there was an arc into her realizing how gorgeous and amazing desi culture is, but that arc never came, so I firmly believe that its just not done a great job in that arena - (I may also make a post elaborating on this if anyone wants me to)

Well, guess I should introduce myself but like, a little more in-depth than I did in my bio. Sooo, pinned post time!

My name’s Ruth! I use she/her and they/them pronouns, and I’m an ace demigirl. I’m from southern Unova, and have only been a trainer for a few years, but I’d like to think I’m at least a halfway decent one. I’ve kiiiinda tried the gym challenge but it’s not a huge priority of mine, I mostly just wander around wherever and then stuff and things happen to me. Isn’t that just how life is? Anyways I’ve got ADHD and also am not the best at doing the whole being a normal person thing, but I’m still happy to chat and answer questions and stuff when my executives are not being dysfunctional. I’ve only been lurking for, what, 3 years…

I have more than six Pokémon, but I’ll go ahead and introduce the usual party I have with me.

Red Tide: Dhelmise that showed up while I was minding my own business tossing pokébeans into a saltwater canal and then followed me even after I ran out. Technically my starter since they were the first Pokémon I ever caught but as you can imagine the situation was far from the usual planned or scheduled or otherwise not spur of the moment sorta deal. Something something insert comparison to Ponyta girl movie trope minus saving a farm. They’re pretty docile and don’t seem to have much interest in battle, but apparently they’re really old and really strong?? Certainly saved my behind a few times, I can say that much… Oh I should also probably mention they’re the red Dhelmise in my profile picture. No, I still don’t really know how they were holding that toy. Red Tide does what Red Tide wants.

Lumen: Chandelure, but I caught her as a Litwick. Basically I was hoping to get a birthday gift for my mom and found her terrorizing a Bed Bath & Beyond by trying to burn all of the actual candles. Decided I’d try to do the employees a favor and ended up having to spend most of my cash on candles to convince the little arsonist to follow me, and then she didn’t stop following me even after the bait candles were destroyed, and the rest is history. Nowadays Lumen is only mostly a little shit(affectionate) who I can somewhat trust not to do arson if left to her own devices. On one hand it’s nice that her mischief isn’t destructive, on the other you have no idea how many times I’ve been woken up because SOMEONE decided to use the smoke alarm to get attention. At least she quickly figured out trying to pick on Red Tide was a great way to get a liquidation to her whole self.

Soul: Aegislash, I found him as a Honedge at a Renaissance Faire looking really confused and lost. Er, well I mean he kinda found me and I just didn’t notice for a while... Might’ve started hanging around when I visited the booth selling replica swords, he would’ve blended in perfectly there. Almost had the world’s worst high-five when noticing Red Tide’s little shadow, but things worked out and I guess the two liked each other enough for him to want to join the team. Or maybe they were doing the Dewpiderman pointing meme at each other over being red. Anyways, he’s always been shy, even after evolving, but he’s definitely not nearly as timid as he started out. Still tends to hide behind anyone or anything he can in unfamiliar situations, though. And also definitely didn’t get his name from a final boss in a game series I really like on account of them both having similar colors and one eye. Lumen doesn’t terrorize him anymore but I don’t think they have much of a bond either, just tolerance.

Kazoo: I and everyone around me always expected I’d be a bug trainer, but it took all the way until finding Kazoo to have my first bug type. He’s a Galvantula now, just kinda showed up in the house one day and kept unplugging my 3DS to feast at the outlet, and like. What was I supposed to do, kick out a little Joltik in the middle of a hailstorm? Just a little creacher whos only crime was being hungy and not knowing what an electric bill is? Send him out to get conked in the head by ice chunks almost a fifth of his own size? I simply could not do it, and that’s how I ended up with funny little guy who probably has one or two thoughts throughout any given week. He didn’t even care about being held like burger! What a guy. I don’t think any of my Pokémon don’t get along with him— Soul actually warmed up to him really fast, even— though Red Tide does sometimes get tired of having their wheel used as an inconvenient perch that spins around. He used to help me save on dryer sheets by simply eating the laundry static, but now I have to deal with a spider who really wants his mandated warm laundry basket bed time and long story short be careful what you teach your Galvantulas as Joltiks. Small price to pay for Kazoo.

Barque: Lapras, and the only core team member I actually battled to capture— that situation was what actually got Kazoo to evolve. Red Tide needed an ocean buddy, fully evolved Lumen needed to be kept under control, and I needed a Pokémon that could use Surf and actually move faster than a walking pace. She’s probably the most interested in battle out of the gang, even more than Lumen, and uh… They don’t really get along, but that’s mostly because local chandelier likes causing problems on purpose and local boat animal likes stopping her from causing problems on purpose. For better or worse. It’s not on sight anymore thankfully. She gets along great with everyone else, and seems to do a good job of keeping the peace when everyone’s out of their balls. Out of curiosity a while back I had some testing done, and apparently she’s all the way from the coast of Galar! Quite the trip to have made.

Cheerio: They are a Meltan and I found them in the trash. Legit had no idea what they were at first because my ‘dex didn’t recognize them, but folks online were able to give me the important info. If Kazoo is baby, then Cheerio is like, mega baby. Creacher with a baby license. Fittingly, they’re best pals with Kazoo, and it’s really cute to watch them hanging out. Soul seems suspicious of them, and Red Tide used to be(and I think is still a bit intimidating to the lil fella on account of being hugelarge), but they were quick to figure out what metal is off limits so I don’t see any problems arising there. Barque is actually a bit protective of them and Lumen wasn’t even given the chance to try and pick on them like she did Soul, but I get the feeling even she wouldn’t have really had it in her to bully what is more or less a metallic blob baby. When not in their ball Cheerio likes hanging out under my hat or on Barque’s head. They’re heavier than you’d expect, but then again they are made of metal, so… Anyways if anything happened to them I’d KO everyone in the room and then myself.

Aaand that’s the gang. One of these days I’ll get around to sharing pictures of everyone, and maybe talk about some of my other ’mons, too. Spoiler alert: Barque is the only one who doesn’t fit with the theme of just showed up in my life one day and made themself at home/catching them was somewhat of an impulse decision that worked out/I didn’t know how else to check if I was about to make a new friend or get murderized to death by a wild animal. You know how it is in Unova.

Alright, left to right, top to bottom:

1. I just get the vibe that Grace has beef with Richie specifically but for no discernable reason ("Richie, the whole point is that it's in the dark!" + "No, this is where you GROW UP!") and the second the sentence popped into my head I had to draw it. Also consider how goddamn funny the image of Grace pulling bleach and gloves and a bone saw out of her backpack is because holy shit did she have a contingency plan

2. I think that Pete saw Ted as the coolest big brother in the world right up until the exact minute he introduced him to Steph and suddenly Ted had the power to be very embarrassing in front of Pete's friends. (He would be used to this, as this is standard older sibling shithead behavior, but he's never had friends for Ted to tease him in front of.) I do think the Spankoffski brothers are really interesting, especially with what an asshole Ted is. In Abstinence Camp Pete does seem to really look up to him. Ted does not hide the fact that he's a massive prick, so the fact that Pete sees him as a positive figure implies that he's one of the very few people that Ted actually tries to be a good person for. Makes a lot of sense too, the age gap between them is massive, so Pete has no way of knowing the kind of sleazy shit Ted does, he's just the cool older brother to him. Also heheheh I did the funny meme

3. All her brothers got one so I gave Webby a humansona. I don't know why she ended up looking like 90s Gwen Stacy but I kinda like it? I was going for classic straight-a student, not quite as frilly as Grace, but very academic and cute. I also think that Webby should be allowed to be a little cosmically horrifying as a treat (watching her casually fucking evaporate Willabella was so unnerving and cool, I would love more of that.) She lets herself be soft and gentle for Hannah's benefit, don't want to scare a little kid after all, but she exists far beyond those... Limitations.

4. Ok this one is highly inspired by a series of drawings by @samglyph , the concept of Ghost Ruth and Richie took my brain captive. So go show them some love!!!!!

in between npmd relistens I’ve become more and more fond of the barbecue monologues song and Ruth as a character.

Because, in the meta of things, the barbecue monologue is just the latest of StarKid reoccurring gags they do every show. In every Hatchetfield musical there’s one song that isn’t from the musical, but instead exists in universe. Working boys, Santa clause goes to high school, and now, the barbecue monologues. A silly overdramatic song from a high school production of a made up play. But there’s something about this song that’s sets it apart from the others and makes it more than a meta joke:

The song actually has an importance on the story. Look I love working boys as much as the next guy, but as a whole, it serves to be the one song that’s a normal song in cannon, aka not part of the alien parasite. But beyond that, it’s supposed to be a purposely cheesy corney musical written by a guy living alone in a bunker. It’s cool but not much else.

And then the Santa clause one from Black Friday, is a call back to the original. Fans loved it so much they did it again! And it’s good, as well, it’s a fun little song. And in addition to that, it complements the shows theme, being a cash grabbing soulless movie musical, that uses the holidays to sell tickets. It’s perfect for a show which is a critique of capitalize and all it inspires! It’s thoughtful but ultimately just something to show while our two main characters get together.

So that brings us to npmd, by now it’s become a staple of the trilogy, but now the series has changed as well. The world of hatchetfield has come alive with people and places, enough to fill two seasons of nightmare time! So the song changes as well. For the first time, the song being sung has an impact beyond being sung in canon. The barbecue monologue serves as our first and finale looking into Ruth as a real character. Before this she had been nothing, but a funny side character, a really really horney nerd. But in the span of one song, we find out so much about her. She wants to be an actor singing on stage but her anxiety prevents that. She belts out a song that has nothing to do with her own life but relates to it nevertheless. The emotion she puts into “the burning of the candle”, the love of attention her and the character both share, they’re both stuck in lives they hate but are trapped in, just for once-

And unlike the character in the play, Ruth doesn’t get the chance to be middle aged and unhappy. She’s dead, in the same moment we realized she was a real person, she’s gone. And that’s why I love this song so much. What could have been a silly gag is now one of the most emotion charged songs of the musical and lets us see the character in a whole new light. anyways

10- I mean it's not so much a guilty fav, but I do like to reread (what I like to call them) gateway romance novels I read in middle school. they're so cute and wholesome and make me feel happy, even if it's not for my specific demographic

15- well, the last book I read was "today tonight and tomorrow". I very much so enjoyed this book, and I think if you're an "academic rivals to lovers" fan, this is a really really good book. the comedy was on point, the character development was amazing, and I loved the important conversations that they had in the book (about anti-semitism, and peoples general response in relation to romance novels). what I do wish wasn't there was the whole "he was obsessed with her while she hated him the whole time" bc I just feel like that trope is a little icky to me, that even when someone so outright hates you, you're still obsessed and in love with them, and that the mc (if I remember correctly) said I love you, even tho she didn't like him in the beginning of the book (I feel like it wldve been better if it was a crush before love) BUT aside from all of that, I really enjoyed this book.

18- i do enjoy historical books, usually from 1800-1900 wld be the time period I'd read them in.

19- I really really loathe twilight, and I know it's a time where everyone loathes it, but I genuinely think it is a horrible book series and I dislike it to my core. I also didn't like shatter me (I only read book one) but I can't think of any reason other than it just didn't interest me, but it wasn't a favorite. and it's not so much dislike, but I don't think the book "the love hypothesis" is as groundbreaking as everyone on booktok made it out to me. don't get me wrong, it's a nice book, and I definitely liked it, but it wasn't as amazing as booktok made it out to be.

This isn’t exactly an NPMD AU per se, but it is a concept. I hope you guys like it!

So here, have some thoughts on the NP characters + hypnosis. This idea totally didn’t come from the line in Dirty Girl when Max says “I swear you’ve got me hypnotized” and moves his finger in a circle while Grace follows.

This concept would likely take place in a timeline where Max either chooses not to be a bully or chooses to become a better person post Waylon Place, and as a result, is a bit nicer, but still has that quarterback/leader of the pack mentality. Additionally, I think the characters would be out of high school and in college.

So, starting with Max…if Max was going to be the hypnotist, here’s how I think it’d go.

He’d be firm but he’s sort of gentle. His voice has power to it. There’s a bit of an assertion of a kinda “focus on me” but it’s not loud. He makes people want to focus. He charms and captivates.

He doesn’t use pocketwatches or pendulums or spirals. Because while yeah, they work, he feels it’s easier for people to focus if it’s all coming from one spot (plus…he likes the focus all on him). Because of that he’ll use solely his voice or he’ll use his hand or his eyes as a focal point. If someone wants like a pendulum or spiral kind of induction he’ll try to replicate it with his finger.

There are points where when he’s guiding his subject, he’ll tell them to repeat him.

A lot of the people he encounters are because they’re stressed and want to turn the thoughts down a bit. They need a bit of order and instruction for a little while, and he’s happy to provide that.

A friend of mine also came up with a thought about Max that I agree with: even if he’s not a bully, he still does have that leader/top of the social hierarchy energy about him, and they thought a good way to keep that characterization is that he can get a little…for a lack of a better word…commanding, making induction loops and bringing people up, only to drop them down. To add on to that, induction wise I bet he makes his subject keep their eyes open/keeps them from dropping until he says so. He keeps the induction going for a while, maybe he even makes them count themself down (and maybe makes them start from the top if they miss a number). But they don’t go under until he tells them to sleep.

Now for the flip side, where Max is a subject:

The hardest part is to get him to let go but if he does, he's out. Even if he’s not a bully, giving up control is still hard for him because of his status and school and the pressure of being a quarterback and just general stress. Life isn’t easy and because of where he is in life he feels pressure to strategize and watch his every move. And once you’re in that kind of mindset, it’s hard to get out, even if you want to.

I also think once he’s under all he’d want is to let himself be vulnerable, take a breather, and be himself and not the front he puts up.

Additionally, I once made a joke that he could be the "I can't be hypnotized" *cuts to the character hypnotized* trope…if it didn’t take him so long to actually get there.

Next here are my thoughts on Richie, if he was the hypnotist:

I think Richie definitely went through a wanting to play hypnotist phase as a kid (which is not as common as my childhood led me to believe). He likely saw it in an anime and decided he wanted to try his hand at it.

Richie as a hypnotist would be the opposite of Max in a way. He’s not loud per se, but he likes all the different ways you can put a person under. And since he likes all the things you see in the movies and on tv, he’d have an array of inductions up his sleeve instead of one specific one like Max.

He definitely would say the “you’re getting sleepy” line at some point.

I think he’d post videos about it. They’d range from informative to him being silly.

I think he’d lean into showmanship a lot as a hypnotist.

Now for the flip side:

If Richie goes under as a subject…he goes under really quickly. Part of it is Richie is really creative and imaginative, and the other part is school and life can be stressful so he’d want to not have to deal with that for a bit.

I also don’t think he’d really have an issue with letting go. I don’t think he’d be as in his head about it as say Ruth or Pete would.

Next up is Pete. While Pete would most likely be the subject, I do have thoughts where he could be the hypnotist:

He would only do this if one of his friends asked him to put them under.

Pete likely wouldn’t want to use spirals or watches or anything unless asked. He’d probably solely use his voice and have his friends stare at the ceiling while he reads from a script, because he’d probably feel goofy doing it.

He doesn’t want the focus on him, but Pete would do anything for his friends, and if this helps them get out of their heads and deal with their stress, he’ll gladly help.

On the other hand, Pete is a tricky subject:

Pete (at least NPMD wise…at first) is closer to Max as a subject. He's smart and strategic. He carefully plans things to avoid certain situations happening (even if they don’t always go according to plan). But if someone he trusts pitches the idea, he may just give it a go.

He wants to let go because it'd be nice to not have to worry about what everyone else is thinking for once. But that's also the reason he's afraid to. He knows that he might say or do something he didn't plan on even if he knows he's in control. While he wouldn't do something completely out of character, if someone asked him what he was thinking while under, he might say it without filtering himself and that's scares him. He’s been burned before and he’s afraid if he lets his guard down, it could happen again.

Ruth is more likely to be on the subject side of things, but like Pete, she’s a tricky one too:

Ruth, like Pete, has a tendency to get in her head and let her worries and anxiety win.

I think she might want to go under because it could help her with her anxiety and stress. But I also think it would take a while because she has to get out of her head and push her anxiety away. We’ve seen her do it before, but it’s not an easy task for her. She may want it to work, but I feel that there’s a part of her that would hold back.

If she manages to get over that hurdle though, I think she’d be happy to not have to worry about everything that’s stressing her out.

Grace is also interesting to think about as a subject:

Grace I think would be similar to Max. She’d be the “I can’t be hypnotized.” *cuts to the character hypnotized* trope if she’d let herself let go. She also has issues letting go because GOD FORBID she feels herself slip.

She’s also very strategic in watching her (and everyone else’s) every move, and I think it’d be hard for her to let go of that. Even if she’s told it’s okay. I think she’d be too focused on that and she’d get in her own head.

Like Max though, if she does let go, I think she’s out.

Last but not least, we have Steph:

Steph doesn’t really believe in it. But she’s there for support if her friends want someone there. Maybe if Pete asked her to put him under, she’d do it? If not, she’d be there holding his hand the entire time.
