Hello, Computer! The Best Artificial Lifeforms in Star Trek

The world of Star Trek is full of sentient life brimming with personality, not all of it people. Not all of it organic lifeforms, for that matter! The hosts here at A Star to Steer Her By are going to take a couple weeks exploring different types of non-human people, and we’re kicking off with the people who are simultaneously the most and the least human: synthetic beings.

We see it in androids, in robots, in holograms, and in other synthetic life: beings with enough sentience that we are compelled to root for them, to fight for their rights, to posit they are indeed alive, and to follow their journeys in molding their own separate identities. So plug in your holodeck, fire up your positronic brain, wake up Pup, and follow along below and/or on this week’s podcast episode (discussion starts at 44:16). Let’s see if you pass the Turing test with some of our faves through the years. Beep boop!

We see this in the brilliant mastermind who outwits his own programming and most of the crew to boot, in the mother of androids who doesn’t know she herself is an android, and in the holographic training advisor who bends the limits of her programming to help her ragtag crew.

Next is What Are Little Girls Made Of, gosh I love Andrea 😍 Brief Summary: The Enterprise finds Nurse Chapel’s missing fiancé, Dr. Roger Korby, along with a group of androids he created. Thoughts: Nurse Chapel gave up her previous career to travel on a starship in order to find Roger, and I have a feeling he’s not worth it 😬 but regardless I’m glad she’s on the Enterprise ✨ Roger is finally located on planet Exo-III, and requests Kirk & Chapel come down to the ruins below the surface. A red shirt unfortunately falls to his death in a bottomless pit and we meet the sketchy Dr. Brown, Roger’s assistant. Brown guides them to Roger’s lab and enter Andrea 😍 Meanwhile, a giant alien kills the other red shirt Kirk placed as a guard. A fight breaks out and Kirk shoots Brown, who is revealed to be an android. So Ruk, the giant alien, can imitate voices and imitates Kirk. Spock questions if “Kirk” is okay, immediately sensing something is off. Then Ruk is revealed to be an android too. And so is Andrea! The machine that builds the androids uses an empty shell of a body and then basically copies the original person onto it.
