Fieldwork here on Rota is well underway, with about half of our mist-netting lanes and trails marked and prepped for next month's bird banding. But along the way, we find all kinds of incredible landscapes and hidden treasures.
Top left: A WWII Japanese artillery gun sunk into a manmade cave in a limestone wall. The old gun is being overtaken by the jungle and has ferns and moss growing all over the barrel.
Top right: An old wrecked boat inside the lagoon on Rota's northwestern shore, with brilliant blue sky above and turquoise water below.
Bottom left: Guam Coenogyne, a rare endangered orchid found only on Rota and Guam. This white flower with a red center emerges from a swirl of large bulbs with leaves that cling to the bark of a mossy tree.
Bottom right: An unbroken green glass bottle that originally held soy sauce, from sometime in the 1920s-40s when Rota was a Japanese colony.

but if you could see us from a distance, you’d know i’ve always been so close to you | @anincompletelist | E | 10k
Objectively, standing half-soaked from rainwater with a stitch in his side and an uncomfortable, raging hard-on outside his worst enemy’s door is not Henry’s finest moment. It’s not even on the list.
– or, henry is afflicted with a curse-gone-wrong that stipulates that only his sworn enemy, alex claremont-diaz, can touch him.
Tumblr media
Got a ticket for two | @clottedcreamfudge | E | 10.6k
Henry likes his apartment - he has done since the day he moved in a year ago. The light in the sitting room is gorgeous at all times of day thanks to the ceiling to floor windows which lead out onto a south-facing balcony, only just large enough for the plethora of plantlife his flatmates care for. The kitchen is always stocked with his favourite tea, everyone keeps to their allotted cupboard and fridge space, and the bathrooms are kept meticulously clean. There’s a rota for chores stuck to the fridge with magnets from Rhode Island and Minnesota, London and Milan, with everything typed up neatly so that nobody has to squint to read someone else’s awful handwriting.
His flatmates themselves? Well, they’re a little… strange.
Tumblr media
why are you googling vampires? | @daisymae-12 | E | 13.9k
Alex isn’t really looking for love – he’s got enough on his plate with law school thanks – but when he’s approached by Henry at a bar one night, all it takes is one small, shy smile and Alex is smitten.
Or, Alex accidentally takes a hot, hungry vampire home and almost dies (not really, he’s just being a dramatic little shit)
Tumblr media
(these last two fics are both from the series the only thing on my mind - Piercer!Alex teaches Henry about the inner workings of BDSM in mid-90s New York)
Tumblr media
wanna know that body like it’s mine | @hypnostheory | E | 5.8k
Henry takes a fortifying breath and sticks his tongue out for Alex to look at.
“Okay good, now hold it up like this,” Alex says, holding his mouth open and sticking his tongue up against the roof of his mouth. Henry copies the motion, flinching when Alex grabs his chin and tilts his head up. He hums as he looks into Henry’s mouth, nodding to himself. “Damn, you have the perfect anatomy for a piercing.”
Henry’s not even sure if that’s a compliment, but his heart skips a beat. “Thank you.”
– After losing a bet, Henry has to get a tongue piercing. Alex, the incredibly attractive piercer, gets stuck in Henry’s head in more ways than he expected.
Tumblr media
covered in you | @hypnostheory | E | 10.6k
Alex blinks at him, tilting his head to the side. Sometimes Alex looks at him like he’s trying to figure out some strange riddle. “Can I ask you a personal question?” Henry switches to the other boot, nodding for Alex to continue. “Do you have a thing for leather?”
Henry blinks. “Erm, no?” He finishes working the leather conditioner in, letting it set. He wipes his hands off on his microfiber cloth, resisting the urge to smell the clean pine tar of the conditioner before he does. “I mean, doesn’t everyone like how leather smells?”
Alex stares at him for a few painful seconds. “Do you just like how it smells?”

This is the first fic rec post I’ve done in years, and it’s my first one ever for the Red, White & Royal Blue fandom!
Please remember to read the tags and note the E ratings. Feel free to send me fic rec requests anytime.

Sweetapple Slices - Slice 2
Tumblr media
Sweetapple | Dear Mr Tracy | Along the way | Slice 1 | Slice 2
@idontknowreallywhy asked a question and I tried to answer it, but Alex and Virgil refused to behave, so we have a fic, but no answers. Also, fic is sugary sweet goop.
Oh, and it should be noted that all these Slices are standalone fics within the universe - consider them slices of life with these two :D
Many thanks to @onereyofstarlight for the read through. Again, I might need to offer her that dental plan. Also to @idontknowreallywhy for egging me on.
I hope you enjoy this romantic sugar fest.
-o-o-o-
“You know, isn’t all this stuff secret?” Alex gestured around him.
Virgil shrugged and tilted his head. “You looking to sell it to anyone?”
Alex’s eyes widened. “God, no! I wouldn’t-“
The rescue operative grabbed him by both arms. “Hey, I’m kidding. We know you wouldn’t do such a thing.”
Alex froze. “We?”
Those gorgeous biceps relaxed just a little. “You don’t think we let just anyone onto our Island, do you?” And he arched a lovely eyebrow.
“You have such beautiful eyebrows.”
Both suddenly shot up.
Oh, did he say that out loud?
Eh, blame it on the concussion…from a few days ago now. The Tracy family had shown no sign of needing to kick him, or his mum, off this amazing chunk of rock. Today Virgil was off rota and Thunderbird Two was set for regular maintenance, so he had been asked down here to ‘keep Virgil company’.
So far ‘maintenance’ had consisted of staring up at the great green Thunderbird, staring around her hanger, an extended session of smooching under her tail fin, and now he was sitting on the edge of Thunderbird Two’s co-pilot seat caught between stunned amazement and the percentage chance of another snoggy in the corner.
Any corner. There were at least four in the cockpit. Did that roof hatch open?
Honestly, he had never thought this would be his state of mind when he finally got to see all of this up close.
Of course, it wasn’t the first time he had been aboard Thunderbird Two. But last time had been sudden and unexpected and his brain had been fretting over so many things.
Now he was so happy he was likely to blow a blood vessel or something.
“Yours aren’t bad either.”
What? He scrolled the conversation back a little. Oh, eyebrows. Huh. “Never thought about them much. Yours, however, definitely require thorough consideration.” He reached up a hand, and hesitating for permission, brushed a finger the length of Virgil’s left eyebrow.
Chocolate eyes eyed him from beneath. “This is new.”
Be daring. “All of this is new.” He withdrew his hand.
“You have a point.” As if in revenge, Virgil reached up and brushed a tangle of Alex’s messy blond hair behind an ear. “I can definitely get used to it.”
He also had the most beautiful smile.
Okay, he had to stop this line of thought before he grabbed Virgil and really embarrassed himself.
“Um, yeah.” He gestured vaguely around the cockpit. “How long have you been flying Thunderbird Two?”
Virgil sat back a little and let go of Alex. “Nine years as her primary pilot. Took over from my Uncle in ‘55. Though there has been some downtime during that time.”
“And you keep her maintained?”
“Me and Brains.”
“Who’s Brains?”
Virgil’s lips twisted. “You haven’t met him yet.”
Oh.
“Don’t worry.” Virgil reached across the dash and flipped a few switches. “He tends to keep to himself. I’ll drag him out of his lab later.” His finger retreated to his jawline. “I think you’ll like him.”
“I will?”
“You’ll see.”
Okay, be mysterious.
“Would you like some coffee?”
Alex stared at him. “You’re really asking that question? Even after how many times I’ve managed to steal coffee off of you.”
Virgil smirked as he stood up. “It was really only once and you were very amusing.”
“Amusing!”
Virgil was laughing as he strode over to a corner of the cockpit, hit some buttons, and revealed the holy grail of all coffee.
Alex couldn’t help but stand up and be drawn to it. Virgil had given him the plans to this creation from heaven, but between Siliwrap and Virgil’s visits, he hadn’t managed to find time to finish putting it together yet.
Besides there was something about the coffee being handed to him by a visiting handsome rescue operative that was its own kind of addictive.
And Virgil always brought plenty.
His drug dealer of choice, apparently.
“Hey, you still with me?” A hand was on his arm and Alex realised he had been standing, staring at the holy grail like a stunned mullet just a little too long.
Virgil had that worried medical frown on his face again.
He had done that a lot over the last couple days.
The man had enough bruises on his arms and legs to pop Alex’s eyes out of their sockets - something about a roof almost falling on him during the Gisborne rescue. Yet Virgil brushed it off as a day-to-day thing.
He was ‘fine’, don’t you ‘worry’, happens ‘all the time’.
But the scattering of bruises Alex possessed, the headache that popped up every now and again, and any slight croakiness of his voice and Virgil was all over him with that yellow scanner thing.
Speaking of which…
Alex grabbed Virgil’s wrist gently as he attempted to wave a randomly appearing scanner over Alex’s head. “I’m okay, Virgil.”
The wrist in his hand relaxed and the yellow light switched off. A gentle tug and Alex let Virgil’s wrist go and the man turned away, stashing the gadget back into wherever it came from.
It was very obvious that Alex had scared him by being caught in the earthquake.
Alex took that extra step closer, slipped up behind, and slid his arms around the man’s chest, resting his chin on Virgil’s shoulder. “I’m okay.”
Heavy lifting arms wrapped around his. “I know.”
“You do realise you have brought me into the presence of the machine that makes your glorious coffee. I mean, I should be kneeling on the floor, bowing in reverence.” A smile. “Give me something to hold so I can drop it in amazement.”
Virgil chuckled. “I doubt you could pick me up.”
“Is that a challenge?”
Virgil twisted himself around in Alex’s arms until they were facing each other. “I could say that you already have, but that pun line is groan-worthy.”
Alex did groan, but then Virgil’s lips found his and he was suddenly very much distracted.
Yes, this corner would do nicely.

It's far too early in the morning and I've been up too long already but if you do the body hopping levels of Tazercraft soulbond/mindlink, do you think there was a point waaay back like as kids or teens or something they swapped bodies and forgot they did it and they just live in each others flesh now? Do you think it happened so many times that even if they broke the quesadilla island amnesia they still wouldn't know who started out as who? Do you think theyd even care? Academic curiosity, sure, but care? Caring is something else.
And then less existential... as bullied kids, did Pac ever force his way into Mike's body, kicking Mike out so his friend didnt have to feel pain (if this started young) beating up the bullies and treating the bruises before letting Mike back? If ones overwhelmed at a party while the other stayed home either sick or it not being their style, or at the supermarket, or any other overwhelming place, does the other ease their way in to get both bodies safely home? What ways can they protect each other from each others bodies and brains? What ways are they still helpless? Hell in less angsty do you think they had different most hated chores as kids and so had a deal to swap bodies when it cane up on the rota? They absolutely used it for pranks you can't convince me otherwise.
Did Pac ever do Mike's exams for him when they were still young? Did Mike start doing Pac's when they got older, being the quicker of the two, leaving Pac so proud but feeling useless as his younger soulmate did his exams for him? As Pac hit his teens first and cracked under the pressure.
IDK just... what does life look like, when you live both in and out of someone else's body? The day to day

Updated Danganronpa Headcanons
Made a post with these a while ago but I reorganized them and added more, so I figured I’d just repost them
Under the cut because there’s a lot
General Headcanons:
1. Maki has several bird feeders, squirrel feeders, and just other foods left outside for animals. She refills these everyday
2. Himiko has dwarfism
3. Tenko loves wearing pride stuff, like shirts and bows and bracelets and stuff
4. Angie was born on Rota (one of the Northern Mariana Islands), specifically in Songsong (the second largest village on Rota).
5. Miu bleached her hair
6. Miu loves watching cartoons
7. When Miu was a kid she was super hyperactive
8. Miu used to get so many little injuries and she never knew where they came from, she was always covered in bruises and bandaids
9. Miu used slurs because she didn’t know the meaning behind them, she assumed it was just another name for a group of people (she got corrected and is now working on it)
10. When Miu was younger she always wrote her name “Mew” because she liked Pokémon and loved the fact she sorta shared a name with one
11. When Kiyo thinks that someone “would be a good friend for sister”, he really means that he likes them and he thinks they would get along if he didn’t feel like he was cheating on his sister
12. Kiyo’s sister was more traditional, Kiyo almost always had traditional Japanese meals that she home made and was taught to dress conservatively, which was only enabled by his cooler body temperature bc illness
13. Kiyo really likes spaghetti but he is also a big fan of dry cheerios
14. Angie wishes her name was Angelica
15. Ryoma has the “Hang In There” poster
16. Kiyo wears anything as long as he’s covered, gender roles don’t phase him, only gendered terms (tis an unfortunate existence)
17. Kokichi knows morse code
18. Kaito and Shuichi have a “secret” handshake (it’s pretty simple and Kaito wants to use it everywhere), Maki refuses to join in on it
19. Hiro got the scar on his back from playing with raccoons when he was younger, he got along with most of them but sometimes they would attack him and he would cry because his friends hurt him
20. Hiro is Blasian, mom is from Japan and dad is African American
21. Tenko and Kiyo drive each other to therapy
22. Kiyo, Mikan, Toko, Mukuro, and Nagito all went to an inpatient together and had group therapy, they’re like a weird little family now
23. In this therapy family, Kiyo and Mukuro act most like siblings towards each other, Nagito is a very protective big brother, Mikan constantly fawns over the rest of them, and Toko likes to pretend they don’t exist because “they embarrass her”
24. Kyoko has a “Quote of the Day” book
25. Miu’s gaydar is absolute dogshit, she thought Rantaro was a straight man for a while
26. Maki loves accessories, but she is very embarrassed about it so she tries not to draw to much attention to it
27. She likes hair pins, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, rings, broaches, fancy hairties, scrunchies, fancy shoelaces, anklets, all that stuff
28. Most of her stuff is simple and silver, but she’s definitely gotten presents from the more observant people like Kaede, Kirumi, Rantaro, Ryoma, and even a ring from Kokichi (it’s a thin black and white striped band, but it was a peace offering from him so she wears it quite a bit)
29. Miu is scared of needles
30. Kiyo and Angie are best friends, it used to be just because Kiyo was fascinated by Angie but they ended up getting along very well
31. Chihiro knows tons of memes and is very into meme culture
32. Mondo used to go to plays and musicals with Daiya (they snuck in) and he is a very good actor because of post performance meetings
33. Mahiru loves taking photos of her friends
34. Izuru loves blankets and soft things
35. Kaito is scared of the dark and he has a bunch of glow in the dark stars and moons on his ceiling, he also has a bunch of stuffies (a lot of which have astronauts suits or other space things)
36. Ibuki has several younger siblings
37. Kokichi is an orphan and was at the same orphanage as Maki, they just never interacted much
38. Kokichi and Miu are friends, they just don’t seem like it to most people
39. No one from V3 kills bugs, they get Gonta to gently remove them from the premise (and sometimes he keeps them in his room)
40. Hiro has the self-assigned role of dad in their his friend group, he does cringey things like leaves messages in their lunch and talks as if he was like 20 years older than he is
41. Mikan’s stutter is from nervousness, but Toko’s is a real stutter
42. Fuyu is lactose intolerant which is why he hates milk, Peko never has anything with lactose in it because Fuyu can’t
43. This is actually why Peko got sick in chapter 1, she didn’t realize the food she ate had cheese in it and she was so not used to it so it made her stomach upset
44. Gundham isn’t vegan, but he is a vegetarian who pays very close attention to where he gets his food from. This is because he knows that many animals that have become live stock can suffer more if not used the way humans have bred them to. Also he knows that humans are omnivores and the circle of life just works like that.
45. Kyoko paints in her free time
46. Hifumi was bullied in school because of his looks which is why he got so into fandoms and fiction
47. Makoto and Komaru are impulsive huggers, Toko has been the most affected by this
48. Mahiru has a pet bird, maybe a duck or a chicken
49. Mahiru definitely goes to Gundham’s house with her bird
50. Kyoko is the rep for class 78, Chiaki is the rep for class 77, and Kirumi is the rep for class 80; much to Kyoko and Kirumi's displeasure, everyone just calls them the class mom
51. Yasuhiro is a vegan
52. Mukuro and the chicken are best friends
53. After Mikan gets a lot of therapy, she learns that her bullies actually caused her many permanent issues, such as slight deafness in her left ear, visual impairments, chronic back pain, and thousands of scars that didn’t get healed correctly (some of which were infected)
54. Celeste has a whip collection
55. Kokichi is a sugar addict
56. Hiyoko has like 6 cats, Mikan is heavily allergic to cats, Hiyoko loves when Mikan comes over because of this. Mahiru, not so much
57. Rantaro took in Shuichi as his little brother
58. Ahoges are meant to express emotions
59. During the tragedy Izuru saw the ROD as his children and took care of them (kinda-)
60. Kokichi’s whole personality was a lie in V3 and I’ll give my specifics for his real one. He’s caring to his friends and he’s very protective over his “family” (D.I.C.E.) he is very manipulative but he normally doesn’t use it for truly bad things, normally just pranks. He has trouble differentiating between reality and fantasy so he tends to be apathetic towards death. He’s super touch starved like he clings to people constantly. Also he lies less.
61. Kokichi got Kaito a fake plant as a prank once but he saw how happy Kaito was so he didn’t have the heart to tell him the truth, Kaito didn’t find out until Maki said something about it
62. Angie makes sculptures of her friends to bless them and to keep her company when she’s lonely
63. The WOH were informally adopted by Toko, Komaru, and Genocider
64. Yasuhiro has a candle collection
65. Izuru likes flowers, Kotoko would make him flower crown’s
66. Makoto has a bracelet with a 4 leaf clover in it that he wears for assessments and meetings for good luck
67. Hiro forces the THH survivors gang to do his daily prayers with him
68. Sonia and Gundham visit King and Queen Nevermind monthly and King Nevermind loves the Dark Devas of Destruction
69. Kaito is a feminist
70. Chihiro and Chiaki are siblings
71. Sometimes Chihiro helps Chiaki program mods for the video games she likes and it’s a fun sibling bonding experience
72. Tenko has done some serious work to get over her misandrist beliefs
73. Gundham, Sonia, Ryoma, and Peko all help at and make constant donations to many animal shelters
74. Classes 77 and 78 all went to Kotoko’s first performance after she felt comfortable enough to try out, this made her feel much less anxious
75. Same thing with all of the WOH, Jataro’s first diorama showcase and Masaru’s first game
76. Nagisa and Monaca don't really have any events they go to
77. Celeste has a music box that she uses to calm down
78. Ibuki and Ultimp are often questioned about whether they are dating or not and have to constantly say no
79. Sometimes class 77 holds big uno tournaments and Nagito or Chiaki always win and Fuyuhiko always flips the table
80. This actually reminds quite a few people that despite the fact Fuyu is small and looks cute he is extremely strong
81. Ibuki has heterochromia, her right eye is the pink we see in the game and her left eye is the blue of her hair streaks
82. Tsumugi will often copy sprite poses from the DR1 characters without realizing it
83. Souda and Miu and siblings, we know that their father wasn’t great but (I think) their mother wasn’t mentioned, so I’m using her as the explanation for all their sexual and romantic…creepiness?
84. Kiyo has the same disease as his sister but just a less intense form, he has a bad immune system and is very unfit
85. Mahiru takes lots of photos of Hiyoko dancing
86. Shuichi is sometimes a mannequin for Tsumugi (most often against his will)
87. Izuru would often stay with Nagito and the WOH
88. Rantaro goes to all of Kiyo and Angie’s meetings/outings/rituals to make sure it doesn’t get too out of hand
89. DR1 was Tsumugi’s favorite season without question
90. Genocider uses her hands a lot when talking, she also likes to play (literally) with her hair when she’s bored
91. Hiyoko loves playing ddr
92. Mahiru loves watermelons
93. Chihiro smells likes oranges because of a perfume he has been using for year’s
94. In the tragedy world, Class 77 all does something special for Chiaki as a memorial
95. Sonia loves strawberry milk
96. Mikan’s favorite animal is a bunny
97. Hifumi used to have a body shape more akin to Princess Piggles, but after years of using food as a coping mechanism and also it being a cheap way to sustain himself, he gained extra weight
98. Hifumi was very happy to see a strong character with his body type when he was younger, which is why he loves Princess Piggles so much (idk if this is canon or not but I figured I’d say it here just in case)
99. Sonia and Ibuki like to mess around with different clothing aesthetics
100. Rantaro brings Kiyo on trips and vice versa and they use it as an escape from the stress of life
101. Kiyo loves all of Rantaro’s sisters in a familial way and they really helped him gain a positive female influence
102. After Kiyo got out of the inpatient he used things he learned to help Rantaro with his depression since Rantaro doesn’t wanna go to therapy
103. Rantaro often helps Kiyo with feeling masculine
104. Komaru got glowing jewelry for her and Toko on their first date so then Toko can be less scared of the dark, Toko hates the jewelry but wears it because she loves Komaru (she tells her it’s just because of the dark tho)
105. Rantaro listens to Kiyo info dump for hours and pays very close attention, sometimes they'll even add some info that they've learned
106. Rantaro got Kiyo into the mental hospital and checked on him daily until he was let out
107. Shuichi finds mysteries kind of boring but likes romances, he’s very embarrassed about this but Kokichi teases him relentlessly
108. Maki got Shuichi and Kaito necklaces with a sun (for Kaito) and a moon (for Shuichi) for their anniversary
109. Kokichi is hardly ever not on Gonta, piggyback rides, sitting on his shoulder, swinging from his arm (he's worried Kokichi will fall off), etc.
110. Ryota and Imposter help each other with their eating disorders
111. Chiaki and Mikan take scheduled naps together
112. Tenko once threw like 20 people when she lost Himiko in a crowd
Nuerodivergent Headcanons:
1. Ibuki has ADHD, she needs stimulation mostly with her mouth, fingers, and hearing
2. Kiyo has autism
3. Genocider developed as a defensive alter, she loves Toko (in her own weird way) and pretends to hate her so Toko doesn’t get embarrassed or bullied
4. When Mikan gets depressive she braids her hair
5. Kokichi stims with arm flaps and jumping
6. Ibuki stims with hand flaps, spins, and tapping her arm/leg like she’s playing a keyboard
7. Kaito stims by hitting his fists or wrists together
8. When Akane gets bored in class she draws food on her body with a sharpie, this causes her to get scars and ink poisoning so Mikan sees her a lot
9. Miu has ADHD, hence her grotesque language (impulsivity) and her sensitivity to insults (RSD)
10. Kiyo fidgets with his necklace, which is why it’s there in the first place
11. Izuru gets overstimulated easily
12. Aoi stims by balling up her fists and twisting her wrists
13. Nagito stims with rocking
14. Nagito likes when people play with his hair or give him head pats
15. Akane has ADHD
16. Nagito has dermatillomania
17. Although Kaz is neurotypical, he only ever really spent time with Miu so he tends to miss some common social cues
18. Kiyo has one strand of curly hair bc he twirls it to stim when he’s focusing
19. Junko has DID, it was mostly repressed for all her life but during the tragedy she kinda let it out, however they’re all still developing and she’s still semi-convinced it’s because she gets bored of her personality
20. Taka has autism
21. Gundham has autism
22. Chiaki has narcolepsy
23. Along with everything else, Nagito has ASPD (anti-social personality disorder)
24. Kaito has ADHD
25. Shuichi has clinical anxiety
26. Kokichi has clinical depression
27. Tenko has (undiagnosed (“let us just send her to hit things, surely that will fix it)) ADHD
28. Rantaro has depression that was developed while trying to search for his sisters
29. Munakata has narcissistic personality disorder
30. Natsumi has ADHD that she’s been masking to try and be a better kid for her parents and brother (she doesn’t know that her brother doesn’t care)
31. She also has an inferiority complex, who would've thunk
32. Ryoma has depression, and he gets like 5 therapy cats, their named Chloe, Naru, Venus, Gangly, and Jo
33. Tsumugi has frequent identity crises
34. Gonta was diagnosed with autism at first but it was eventually shown that he simply didn’t know because he didn’t grow up with humans
35. Gonta does however have insomnia and when he wakes up from sleeping he will go play in the garden
36. Ultimp has binge eating disorder
Sexuality and Gender Headcanons:

2. Hajime is trans ftm, in the world with the trajedy he got top surgery (without knowing) from Izuru, in the world where normal things happen he still gets top sugary but in a normal way, he takes T; he is pansexual
3. After Kiyo got over his sister and had some self discovery he realized that he was a raging homosexual; he uses strictly he/him pronouns
4. Izuru and Kiibo are enby buddies (they both use they/him pronouns)
5. Angie is aroace (“The only one I love is Atua!”)
6. Makoto is trans ftm with no surgery or a binder, but he takes T; Makoto is demisexual, he is panromantic but is only sexually attracted to the female genitalia, not the male genitalia

10. Kyoko is a demigirl with she/her pronouns; she’s bisexual leaning towards men

Back to the Marianas next week! Here are two field sketchbook pages I didn't manage to post yet, of fanihi (Mariana fruit bat) and sali (Micronesian Starling).
Fanihi were kind of everywhere on Rota, and I saw more of them in five days there than I have in all my time working on Saipan over the years. It's good to know that their population is healthy there, though the locals said that they were seeing them more than usual also because of a behavioral change. Typhoons in 2023 had stripped the trees of flowers and fruit and delayed the new fruiting season, so part of the reason fanihi were so visible was that they were spending a lot more time than before having to find food.
Pretty important when doing any kind of science to keep behavior and detectability in mind - seeing more bats doesn't always mean there are more bats, just that they may be more visible than normal for other reasons.

GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Warner Bros. Pictures
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: In the undiscovered stratum of Hollow Earth, Kong embarks on a quest to find a family. His discoveries, however, accidentally unleash the most formidable threat humanity has ever faced. Simultaneously, Godzilla is stirred into action by a signal transmitted by dwellers of Hollow Earth's lower realm. Jia, the last of Skull Island's Iwi, also perceives the signal. Kong and Godzilla, aided by Mothra, join forces in response to the call, determined to overcome the threat. This journey delves deeper into the histories and origins of these Titans, as well as the enigmas of Skull Island and beyond.
REVIEW: During my childhood, my local cinema's Saturday Matinee frequently showcased the newest Toho giant monster film. The Kaiju are again on the move as Godzilla, Kong, and Mothra form an unprecedented alliance in this latest American adaptation of the franchise, facing a formidable Titan threat in a thrilling spectacle reminiscent of classic buddy team-ups and certain elements of the "Planet of the Apes" mythology. The film promises an epic, action-packed giant monster battle royale.
I would have thought more elements from the Apple+ series "Monarch"ould be integrated into "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire." However, the story begins shortly after "Godzilla vs. Kong." Kong is depicted as a more relatable character with new and intriguing additions to his fighting techniques and arsenal. His seasoned gladiator-like demeanor is evident in his facial expressions and movements within the Hollow Earth arena. Godzilla maintains his aloofness and cold-blooded nature, though he does receive a few more significant moments later in the film.
The human characters' personal dramas underscore the significant threat to the surface world. These dramas are often juxtaposed with lighter moments, creating a dark comedic tone. The narrative falls short of achieving a truly epic feel but introduces rich new elements to the Monsterverse mythology. However, there are some unanswered questions regarding the villain and his minions, such as their motivations for moving certain stones.
The narrative also has a Jules Verne-esque quality, given the diverse cast of characters with distinct specialities and personal relationships. While there may be a few logical inconsistencies towards the end of the film, the focus on action and adventure ultimately overshadows these issues.
The production values in this film are nothing short of breathtaking. The state-of-the-art visual effects, photorealistic textures, and seamless integration of various elements create a visual feast for the eyes. Some of the most challenging elements, such as intricate hairs, realistic water effects, and detailed creature scales, are executed with such precision. My analytical mind was initially engaged, but at some point, I found myself carried away by the visual spectacle, immersing myself in the cinematic journey.
The production designs are equally impressive, with stunning sets and meticulously crafted costumes. The soundtrack is an eclectic mix of pop songs, including "Welcome To My World," "Twilight Zone," and "Was Made For Lovin' You," juxtaposed with orchestral pieces reminiscent of composers such as Nino Rota and Tangerine Dream. This unique combination adds a layer of excitement and energy to the film, creating an immersive audiovisual experience.
The actors who survived the last film, plus a few new additions, totally sell the magic, wonder and terror of this computer generated reality of the Titans. Actress Kaylee Hottle steals the show as Jia. She provides such a sense of wonder and empathy that adds to a viewer’s engagement with the film. The rest of the actors have a specific part/character to play and keep it fresh without becoming cliched.
Despite its traditional summer blockbuster feel, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" is surprisingly scheduled for a late March release. This new installment in the Monsterverse Mythology provides an exciting and thrilling journey, fulfilling the expectations of fans and delivering more. Though Godzilla takes a backseat to Kong in this narrative, it's likely that the king of the monsters will have his moment in the spotlight in future installments or the series. The film caters to both newcomers to the franchise and dedicated fans of these American films and the iconic Toho universe, offering Easter eggs and references for the latter group.

Haaaapppy Birthday Month!!! A prompt!: Mermen!Stony! Do they have to be actualfax mermen? Nien! They could be a mermaid bar au ( see Dive Bar in sacramento) or perhaps it is the 1970’s and Disneyland still has cast members as mermaids in their lagoon but now it also includes mermen. Or they are possibly actualfax mermen and and they meet and fall in love. Idk, I just know merpeople. Happy Birthday again <3
I loved this prompt so much that I sort of combined all three ideas? Also I'm very ashamed of myself for not knowing Dive Bar exists because that is right up my alley (and now I definitely need to make a trip out to California)
Anyway thanks for the birthday wishes. This prompt definitely got away from me so here are 5000 words of shapeshifting mermaids that you can find on ao3 here:
~
Steve is of the personal opinion that if more humans knew just how many of their beloved close friends and neighbors were non-human, there would be an uproar. And not even just the people close to them—there isn’t a corner of the world left untouched by magic, from sirens topping the charts to trolls scoring touchdowns to witches making dreams come true at the Happiest Place on Earth. Nowhere is that more obvious than in the theme park industry.
Steve personally blames Walt Disney for it. What the man could do without magic was simply incredible, and it left the rest of the industry scrambling to catch up with him, frequently using magic to get an edge. Which is how Mermaidia, a horribly-named (but so chosen to play off of Mermaid Fever caused by the frequent appearance of mers in human media) and mer-owned-and-operated cousin to SeaWorld, got its start.
Mermaidia, as Steve has heard his entire life, is unique in that not only is it one of the most ethical aquatic theme parks in the world with enclosures more than large enough for  the animals they keep, but in that the entire park is owned and staffed by mermaids—not that the humans know that, of course. Mers were the first shapeshifters, born even before weres and dragons, and going from tail to legs is as simple as wishing it done.
He leaves the elevator that travels from the underwater city located just off the coast of the archipelago that makes up Mermaidia to the park headquarters located on the largest of the park’s islands. His PA, Natasha, is waiting for him just outside the elevator with a copy of the day’s schedule and a cup of tea. He accepts both and takes a sip as he glances over the schedule.
“Why am I meeting with the new performer?” he asks, gaze pausing on the little Meeting with Tony Carbonell highlighted in red at the top of the schedule. He starts walking toward his office. If he’s got a meeting with Carbonell first thing, then he wants to make sure his office is in order. “I’m not on the rota for performances for another few weeks.” Despite being the owner of the park since a decade ago when his parents, the original founders of Mermaidia, passed, Steve got his start at the park performing in one of the park’s three mer-centered shows. He still likes to perform when he has a free day, but he doesn’t have one of those coming up for a while.
Natasha replies, “There are security concerns regarding his employment.”
“What do you mean?” Steve asks, frowning at her. “He hasn’t even shown up for his first day yet. He can’t possible have gotten into trouble already.”
“It’s not him, Steve,” Natasha says. “Or—it is him, but not in the way you’re thinking.”
“Explain,” Steve says.
But Natasha shakes her head and waits until Steve’s office door has closed behind him before she says, “He’s royal.”
Steve’s hands still in tidying his desk. “Royal,” he repeats flatly.
Natasha nods. “You know the queen has been talking about the prince getting a job.”
He does know. The news has been all over the city for weeks that the spoiled heir to the throne would be getting a job after one too many public mistakes, and if Steve had had any inkling that he would be coming to Mermaidia, he would have put together the first name Tony with the queen’s childhood name Carbonell instantly. But he hadn’t. He’d assumed, evidently wrongfully, that the young Stark, well-known to be gifted with mechanics and engineering, would stay as far away from entertainment and customer service as possible.
“Alright,” he says quietly. “Send him in when he gets here. We can discuss security details then.”
Natasha opens her mouth like she’s going to ask something—she nearly always does; she likes to know things, which makes her invaluable to Steve as she always knows what’s going on in his company, but is also deeply frustrating when she turns that on him—but a pointed look at the door has her leaving without a word. Steve slumps back into his desk chair—dwarven-made and far more comfortable than anything mass-produced by humans—and groans, dropping his head into his hands.
Tony Stark, working in his park.
What’s next, his first boyfriend deciding to work here too?
Steve has never told anyone this, let alone his nosy assistant, but he remembers Tony from their shared childhood in the palace. Before he created Mermaidia, Steve’s father had been one of the king’s bodyguards. Sometimes, Steve think he must have spent most of his boyhood swimming after Tony, the younger mer having been both too intelligent and too mischievous for his own good, but he hadn’t. It was only five years before the February Uprising that left Steve’s dad permanently unable to shift into his mer form and Tony’s dad, the king, dead.
The last Steve saw Tony Stark, he’d been blaming Steve for his dad’s inability to protect the king as Steve and his ma left the palace. With Steve’s dad unable to shift, they’d retired to the archipelago above the city, left unclaimed by both humankind and mer. A decade later, they’d opened Mermaidia and five years after that, both his parents were gone and Steve was left the sole owner of the park.
With all that, he hasn’t thought of Tony other than in passing in years. He’d long since realized that Tony’s blame for what happened to his father was born out of grief and a childlike inability to understand what had happened. Now that they’re older, he has no doubt that Tony’s come to realize that the king’s bodyguards had done all they could. Steve’s dad wasn’t the only one to be injured that night, and he had been one of the few left alive.
Steve hasn’t seen Tony since that last night at the palace, not in person anyway, though he’s seen plenty of Tony in the magic bubbles that pass for news amongst mers, none of his appearances good. The pretty child had turned into a pretty man, and the combination of his looks and his inability to keep his head down has made him an attractive target for anyone looking to make a little bit of money off of selling stories. Truthfully, the only thing that surprises Steve about the queen forcing her son to find a job is that it took her so long.
“Steve,” Natasha says, poking her head into Steve’s office. “Mr. Carbonell is here.” She looks disapprovingly around his office. “I thought you were going to tidy up in here.”
“Got distracted,” Steve says, straightening his tie. He can do this. He can see his childhood best friend for the first time in twenty-five years and maintain a cool disposition. “Thanks, send him in.”
Tony must have been waiting right behind her because the words have no sooner left Steve’s mouth than Tony is shimmying past her, nearly overbalancing once he pops into the room.
“Tony,” someone exasperatedly says from behind Natasha. “You’re supposed to let me enter the room first.”
“Sorry,” Tony says cheekily, throwing a grin over his shoulder. “Got a little excited there.”
Natasha steps aside for a tall black man, who follows Tony into the office on legs that clearly aren’t used to being legs yet. Steve can’t see any weapons on him, but judging by his words, he’d be willing to bet that this is the bodyguard concerned for Tony’s safety while he’s employed by Mermaidia—Colonel Rhodes, the note on Steve’s schedule had called him. Steve stands and offers his hand to Rhodes first, shaking it in a way that’s more common to humans than mers but is long habit after years of dealing with humans in a business capacity. It’s only once the door has closed behind him that he turns to Tony and bows.
“Your Highness,” he says formally.
For the first time, the smile on Tony’s face falters.
“Please, sit down,” Steve urges the two of them, taking his own seat again while he gestures at the chairs behind them. He waits until they’re both seated before continuing. “Welcome to Mermaidia, Your Highness. I understand that you’re using a glamour to protect yourself?”
It’s an unnecessary question. Steve can see the glamour shimmering just under Tony’s skin. They’re tricky things, glamours, much more complicated than humans make them out to be. To someone who doesn’t know who’s wearing it, the glamour projects an altered version of the wearer—in Tony’s case, face a little more angular than it should be, hair a few shades lighter, and jewel blue eyes. But Steve does know who’s beneath the glamour and so he sees the dark hair and the warm brown eyes, the glamour shimmering like a mirage only when Tony moves.
“Yeah,” Tony says, giving Steve a cautious look. “I was always supposed to come here with the glamour but then Mama got worried and sent Rhodey here with me.”
“Colonel Rhodes,” Steve says politely, turning his attention to the other mer. “What do you need from us?”
“I know Tony’s working as a performer,” Rhodes replies, “so what I need is a way to stay close to him without having to be in the show itself.”
“We can arrange that,” Steve says, already thinking about possible positions they could put Rhodes in. “You will, of course, be paid as an employee.” Rhodes looks surprised about that and starts to open his mouth, but Steve waves him off. “It wouldn’t feel right, asking you to work here as a cover and not paying you. We take care of our employees here. Anything else?”
“I’d like to take a look at your existing security.”
“Of course. I can hook you up with Bucky Barnes, our current head of security, to go over the finer details with you.”
“And I’d like additional security at each of Tony’s shows.”
Steve nods. “That’ll need to be something you arrange with Bucky. Are there any other questions?”
“Yeah, actually,” Tony pipes up. “Rhodey, can you give us the room for a second?” Rhodes looks dubious. “Oh, come on, it’s Steve, he’s not going to hurt me.”
This does not make Rhodes appear any less dubious, but he stands up. “I’ll leave the door open.”
“I owe you an apology,” Tony says, leaning forward in his chair. “I said some pretty terrible things the last time we saw each other—”
“You were a child,” Steve protests automatically, even though it’s nothing he hasn’t thought before.
“Yeah, but that’s not an excuse. You had your life turned upside down by the attack too, and we should have grown closer together. I shouldn’t have let my anger get the best of me. So, I’m sorry.”
Steve blinks. “Apology accepted.”
“Great!” Tony says, smiling brightly. Steve’s breath catches at how the smile lights up his face. The news bubbles hadn’t been lying; he really is very pretty. “Now, I think you owe me an apology too.”
“Oh, I do, do I?” Steve asks nonplussed.
“Yeah. How come you never invited me to your park, Stevie? Really, I’m hurt.”
Steve laughs and points at the door. “I think you’ve got paperwork to fill out, Mr. Carbonell. Better get going.”
Tony makes a face, but stands. “I’m going to get that apology from you.”
“How about this?” Steve offers. “I’ll come see you in the show once you’ve finished training.”
Tony’s eyes light up. “I’ll take you up on that offer, Mr. Rogers.”
~
For all that Steve had had great intentions of staying far away from the pools Tony’s shown practiced in—he’d accepted Tony’s apology and they’re at least friendly now, but once burned and all that—he can’t resist ducking down there the first time the show’s director sends him a report of how the practices are progressing. By rights, Steve shouldn’t be getting any of these reports; they should just be going straight to the department heads. But his parents had taken a hands-on approach when running the park, and Steve has every intention of maintaining that legacy, so he oversees operations as personally as he can.
The director’s review comes to him with glowing praise for Tony, which doesn’t actually surprise Steve. He would imagine that Tony’s life would be full of public faces versus private faces. Sliding into another role, especially one so close to his own, must feel very easy. Even so, it’s effusive enough that Steve can’t help but feel curious and wander down to the pools to see for himself.
The show is simple enough and based on a mer legend to boot: an attractive palace guard sent to rescue the mer ruler from an evil sea witch. The genders of the characters are easily changed out to suit whoever winds up with the role, a decision that was unpopular with the humans at first though none of the mer staff have ever cared about such a thing. One of the park’s veterans, a friend of Steve’s named Sharon, who’s been here almost as long as he has, has been cast in the role of the palace guard for the season. Tony, in a twist of irony, was cast as the young ruler.
The practice pools are located on the back halves of the islands, well out of sight of the guests, and take a bit of a hike to get to—if one has to walk. Fortunately, Steve is mer, and he swims around the island instead, a much easier way to get to the pools.
He emerges from the water, seamlessly transitioning from tail to legs, idly wondering at the magic that transitions his clothes as well so that he doesn’t lose them every time he shifts. The show, he realizes as he approaches the stage and pool—one of the largest they have and yet still requires set changes—is in the middle of a run-through. The entire show is performed underwater with only a few early scenes performed on land, namely the opening chorus performed by a few mers acting as sailors. The pool itself, unlike the one they’ll perform in for guests of the park, is set in the ground so that the only way to view it is from a platform above, which is where Rhodes is currently standing, arms crossed. Steve wanders over to join him. From their vantage point, he can make out the jewel-bright flashes of the performers’ tails. It takes him a moment to locate Tony. He’s looking for the bright gold and red of the royal family, but Tony’s glamour must be stronger on his tail because he sees the mer with the dark blue and white tail several times before realizing that the reason it looks so odd is because it’s not real.
“Rogers,” Rhodes says quietly so as not to disturb the performers.
“Rhodes,” Steve replies, nodding at him.
“Come to check out the show?” Rhodes asks, raising an eyebrow in a way that makes Steve feel that he knows exactly why Steve is here—and that it has little to do with the show itself. “You know, he talks about you all the time.”
“He does?” Steve asks, only realizing too late that he sounds hopeful. Rhodes grins at him.
“Yeah. I’ve been his bodyguard for most of a decade, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard him talk about anyone half as much as he talks about you. He’s really proud of all the work you’ve put into this place. Feels bad about what he said to you last time you saw each other.”
“He could have said something earlier,” Steve says, annoyed.
Rhodes shrugs. “I don’t think he thought he had the right to.”
Which, huh. Combined with what Steve is learning about this older Tony from the reports the director’s sent in—that he’s a hard worker who’s easily made friends with his costars, always shows up on time, and never once complains about the long rehearsal hours—it paints a very different picture than the news bubbles do.
He says as much to Rhodes, who gives him an approving look, but any further discussion stops when a sharp bosun’s whistle pierces the air, signaling for breaktime.
“I’ll never get used to that,” Rhodes says casually, moving to the edge of the platform and looking straight down. Steve follows him and spots Tony swimming towards them parallel to the pool’s walls. Moving as fast as he is, it’s easier to parse through the glamour to the glimmers of gold and red beneath. “Better move. He likes to show off.”
Tony bursts out of the water, using the extra push from his tail to clear the water and leap onto the platform. He transitions from tail to legs halfway through the jump—much easier than most mers can manage, even ones who work on land—and tucks himself into a roll, somersaulting past Steve and Rhodes, and comes to his feet.
“Ta-da!” he exclaims.
“Yes, yes, you’re very impre—” Rhodes begins dryly, but Tony catches sight of Steve then.
His face lights up. “You came!” he says, looking positively delighted that Steve is there.
Steve feels his own face blush bright red. “Ah,” he says awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck. “It was—I like to keep an eye on everything in the park.”
Tony looks like he sees right through Steve’s bluffing, but he doesn’t do anything other than give him a knowing look. “So what do you think?”
“You look good,” Steve says without thinking, which is true. Tony is shirtless in this form other than the gold jewelry he wears for his role, and it offsets his slender, toned body in a very distracting way. He wears a bright turquoise gem around his neck that all but screams magic. This, Steve suspects, is the source of the glamour. He suddenly realizes what he just said. His blush deepens as a delighted smile spreads across Tony’s face. “I mean—the show. The show looks good. What do you tell everyone that’s for?”
Tony continues beaming at him for a moment before he looks down at the gem Steve’s gesturing to. “Oh, I just say it’s for heart problems. Do you think I look good, Steve?”
Steve glares at him. “You know you do.”
“Yeah, but—” Tony takes a step closer to him, and suddenly, he’s in Steve’s space and Steve is finding it hard to breathe. He hadn’t anticipated this when Natasha told him who Tony Carbonell really was. How could he have? He hadn’t seen Tony in years. How could he have expected the bright burst of attraction every time their paths crossed. “Do you think I look good?”
Steve looks at him, at his dark brown eyes sparkling in the morning sun and his pink mouth begging to be kissed red. “Yeah,” he says hoarsely. “I do.”
Tony’s smile softens. “I missed you, Big Blue.”
“Big—what?”
Tony’s gaze flickers down to Steve’s legs. “That’s a pretty big tail you’ve got there,” he murmurs, pupils blowing wide. “Makes me wonder—”
“Mr. Rogers!” Janet, the show’s director, exclaims. She joins them on the raised platform and throws her arms around Steve. Tony steps back, heated stare fading as he turns and looks back over the pool. Janet is a little older than Steve’s mom would have been, and she had become like a second mother to him in the days after his parents’ deaths. He adores her to pieces for all that he’s been unable to get her to stop calling him Mr. Rogers. “Making friends with the new star?”
“Something like that,” Steve says.
“Have you had a chance to go over the new blocking yet?” Janet asks him.
Steve says truthfully, “No, I’ve been busy.” One of the emails Janet had sent him earlier in the week had involved the minute changes she’d made to the show since last tourist season, but Steve hasn’t had a chance to come down to the pools and go over them yet. Natasha has kept him busy with meetings and visiting the other departments. And since he isn’t on the performance rota for another few weeks once the season opens, he hasn’t worried about it.
“Are you busy now?”
He thinks he knows where this is going, but he’s never been able to lie to Janet before, and he doubts he’ll be able to now. “No.”
“Good. Get your costume and gear from Sharon and get in the pool. We’ll run through it a few times with you.”
“Wait, what?” Tony asks.
“Sometimes, I do the performances,” Steve says, trying to seem more casual than he feels. He strips off his suit jacket and shirt, knowing better than to argue with Janet. “It’s a good way to stay up to date with everything going on in the park.”
“Is that so?” Tony asks lowly, smirking at him. Steve shivers and turns away, diving into the pool, transforming the instant he hits the water.
~
Even with the changes, Steve could do most of the show in his sleep, which is good because the moment he takes in the sight of Tony chained to the rock, angrily snapping at the sea witch that his loyal guard is coming for him, Steve’s brain decides to take a hike southward and stays there.
It’s not that he hadn’t known that Tony’s mer form is gorgeous because he had. Anyone with eyes and access to a news bubble knows that. Even with the glamour, Tony is handsome. Without it—with his sinuous tail and its golden scales around his stomach giving way to bright red—he’s stunning. But he hadn’t anticipated that the way Tony’s tail lashes angrily against the rock and his wrists twist in their chains, catching the dappled sunlight filtering through the water, would make him feel.
He goes through the motions, barely noticing when Janet stops them to correct his movements according to the new script. He says the lines, wondering if he’s ever meant them as much as he does now. He will rescue Tony, no matter that he isn’t truly in any danger.
And when he’s defeated the sea witch and taken Tony into his arms, Tony gazing up at him like he never wants to look away, he realizes that he’s never felt so right as he does now.
Oh.
Oh.
~
“Have lunch with me,” he asks Tony after they’re done with rehearsal, to which Tony readily agrees. Steve takes him to one of the higher end restaurants in the park. He’s needed to go by there anyway to approve the final menu for this year’s season. Tony just gives him an excuse to go there sooner than his scheduled visit next week, which he’s sure the chefs are grateful for since it’ll give them more time to prepare if he asks them to make any changes.
They spend hours in the restaurant talking, far longer than Tony’s lunch break should have allowed for (though he doubts that Janet will complain; she and Natasha have been trying to set him up for ages). They work their way through every item on the menu, talking about everything and nothing and all the things in between. Tony proves himself to be just as smart as everyone says he is and as funny as he is smart and as kind as he is funny. Steve wonders at the disconnect between everything he’s read about Tony and the person he sees in front of him, but he has enough experience with that disconnect as well to know that not everything he reads can be accurate. After all, he himself isn’t nearly the recluse human media tries to paint him as.
Their lunch is only the first of many. Every day, Steve finds himself swimming over to the pools just before lunch, hoping to catch Tony before he joins the rest of the cast for his break. And every day, even if Steve is running late, Tony waits for him, clearly more interested in spending that time with Steve. They’ve grown as close as they once were as children and more than, and Steve often wishes that he could work up the courage to even just take Tony’s hand as it rests on the table, but he hasn’t managed to yet.
Mermaidia opens for the season, and they both get busier than they have been before. They still meet up when they can, but with six shows each day, Tony is frequently exhausted at the end of the day. In addition to his duties as the owner the park, Steve takes shifts whenever he can—in the gift shops, in the restaurants, as a tour guide in the aquariums. His turn to work Tony’s show hasn’t come up yet, but he counts down the days. Between Tony’s exhaustion and Steve’s busy schedule, their meetings grow briefer and briefer though Steve still tries his best to make time for Tony and it’s clear that Tony does the same for him.
A few days before Steve is supposed to take over Sharon’s role for the day, Natasha informs him that he has no meetings scheduled and she’s blocked his calendar. He frowns at her. He was supposed to have an interview with one of those human television shows. Every few years, one of them gets it into their heads that they’ll be the ones to figure out the secrets of Mermaidia—both Steve and his parents have always said that the mermaids of Mermaidia work through magic—and he’s come due for another one.
“They cancelled,” Natasha says unconcernedly. He takes that to mean as she scared them off. Natasha can be terrifying when she wants to be. “If I were you, I’d recommend going out to the waterfall.”
The waterfall is Steve’s favorite place on any of the islands. Located on one of the smaller islands that make up the park, the waterfall empties into the bay, which the island forms a natural barrier around. Protected from human eyes by some magic that Steve’s parents had put in place, it’s the one place in Mermaidia outside of the show pools where he can feel free to change into his mer form without worrying about someone spotting him.
“Thanks,” he says, then narrows his eyes suspiciously. “Why?”
“Just thought it might be nice,” Natasha says innocently. She doesn’t crack under his glare, and Steve eventually gives up. He’s sure she’s got some sort of secret reason for making him go, but he can’t deny that he wants to.
“Alright,” he says eventually. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
He swims over to the waterfall, wholly unsurprised to find Tony there when he arrives. Tony’s sitting on one of the rocks lining the beach, red and gold tail flashing in the sun. He’s removed the jewel from around his neck, so that Steve doesn’t have to fight past the glamour to see just him. Steve swims right up to him. Tony must spot the blue and silver of Steve’s own tail from a way off because he doesn’t seem surprised at all when Steve pops out of the water even though he couldn’t possible have heard him over the sounds of the waterfall.
“Fancy seeing you here,” Tony says, twisting to drape across the rock, putting his face very close to Steve’s, whose breath catches.
“So,” Steve says, sounding strangled. He clears his throat and tries again. “So, which one put you up to this?”
“Janet,” Tony replies. “She told me she thought one of the understudies was slacking off and she wanted to sub him in to catch him off guard.”
“I pity whoever comes to see the show today,” Steve remarks.
Tony laughs, his breath puffing across Steve’s mouth. “We both know Sharon is more than talented enough to make up for it.” His gaze drops to Steve’s lips, going dark and heated.
Steve’s tongue darts out to wet his mouth. “Ah, where’s Rhodes?”
“Around,” Tony murmurs, waving a casual hand. “He won’t bother us, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“Well, in that case,” Steve begins and then reaches up, grabbing Tony’s arms and hauling him over his head and into the water. Tony hits the water with a huge splash, screeching loud enough that Steve can still hear him above water.
He dives too, darting away from Tony’s teasing grab. They chase each other through the bay, shouting taunts back and forth. Tony is a dirty cheat, gathering up sand from the bottom of the bay to toss back in Steve’s eyes, though he could have expected that—even as a boy, Tony hated to lose. In retaliation, Steve uses his knowledge of the bay to dart through one of the caves lining the stone walls of the island. If he times it right, he’ll exit the other side either just ahead of Tony or practically on top of him.
He emerges right as Tony swims by and manages to catch Tony’s hand, spinning him around and into the rock. Tony’s back hits the wall with a soft “Oof.” He doesn’t try to escape now that Steve’s got him pinned, only relaxes his wrist into Steve’s grip.
“Caught you,” Steve breathes, bubbles streaming from his mouth.
“Sure did,” Tony says easily, twining his tail around Steve’s, drawing a shiver from Steve. “We match, you know.”
“Hmm?”
“Look at our tails, Steve.”
Steve does. He wouldn’t have thought that Tony’s red and gold could be considered as matching with his own blue and silver, but they look good together, intertwined as they are. His heart beats faster. He puts his free hand at Tony’s waist and slides it around to his back, the rough scales catching against the skin of his hand as he pulls Tony into him.
“Tony,” he says helplessly, not entirely sure what he’s asking for. Tony must get it, however—he always seems to know what Steve is looking for—because he smiles at Steve and puts his other hand around the back of Steve’s neck and tugs him down.
Their lips meet, sliding against each other as they float there, suspended in the water, in this moment. Tony’s mouth tastes like the unique blend of fresh and saltwater that comes from the waterfall pounding into the bay. Steve pulls him even closer and kisses him again, opening his mouth for Tony’s questing tongue. Tony is whispering something into his mouth, something that Steve can’t hear over the rushing in his ears—or maybe that’s the sound of the waterfall filtering through the bay.
They pull apart and come together again and again, Tony’s hand drifting down from Steve’s neck to his shoulder to his bare chest. Steve kisses his way across the line of Tony’s jaw to his throat. Tony gasps his name, and Steve returns to his mouth, kissing him again.
He doesn’t notice when they start to drift upwards, only when they break the surface and they suddenly gasp in air instead of water. He strokes Tony’s face and slides his tail up and down Tony’s.
“I really like you,” Steve says, kissing the salt from Tony’s cheeks.
“Good,” Tony says, sliding his hand back up and twisting his fingers into Steve’s hair. “I really like you too.”
“I’m glad you decided to work here,” Steve says, possibly too honest since Tony pulls away from him, eyes searching Steve’s face. It’s a long moment before Tony’s face softens into a warm smile.
“Best job I’ve ever had,” Tony replies.
Steve laughs. “Only job you’ve ever had.”
“Makes the choice easy then, doesn’t it?”
Steve kisses him again, Tony’s fingers tightening in his hair to keep him there. “I want to see you more often.”
“Abandon your duties,” Tony says immediately. “Take over Sharon’s role. Spend every day with me.”
“I was thinking we could start with dinner,” Steve suggests instead.
Tony thinks about it. “Yeah, okay, dinner sounds good too.”
“I’m so glad you approve,” Steve says dryly, but he thinks his words are undercut by the way he pulls Tony back to him.
From the way Tony kisses him, he thinks Tony knows it too.

How do you think Mattias and Arthur's bosses react to their decision to date again? And do the tabloids ever find out?
hm!
at first I was going on a long ramble about who and how the bosses found out and what I’d expect from a politician of that position but something else occurred to me: it would absolutely be someone in the British royal family, either in the household or extended, to be the one to spill the tea to the tabloids. to throw the tea, even, to dump it into the harbor. one of these fuckers is gonna cash in on that sweet royal rota money.
Mathias, I think, doesn’t face a lot, if any, repercussions? Denmark is one of the most queer-friendly countries in the world, which apparently started back in 1933, so that’s super fucking cool. yeah Mathias is fine. if anything, the Danish government probably hails it as a major PR win. hell yeah, free publicity! the pride parade in Copenhagen is gonna be so fucking LIT this year! I mean, they are still politicians after all
Arthur, who has to deal with the queerphobic atrocity responsible for a lot of Bullshit on Terf Island that is the British tabloids, is a lot less fine. but there is absolutely nothing more British than simply pretending the scandal didn’t happen by not addressing it at all while the peasants outside relish in the gossip, so the stance of Buckingham is simply to ignore it. (I can’t really comment on the Parliamentary side, though.)
in the end I think Arthur just outright fucking leaves the country for Denmark with Mathias because he is an intensely private person and cannot handle the public humiliation and general tabloid-paparazzi bullshit. presumably he has to be coaxed out by the UK gov and in the meantime one of his siblings temporarily takes over his duties so he can enjoy the much-needed vacation.
hm, this isn’t a very fun answer, is it?
