The Good Son (1993) - Review

Mark Evan’s (Elijah Wood) mother passes away and he’s set to stay with his Aunt and Uncle and their two children for winter break, while his father (David Morse), against his better judgement, leaves on a business trip in hopes that they’ll be set for life when he comes back. Mark quickly befriends his cousin Henry (Macaulay Culkin) and thinks they’re just having so much fun, that is until Henry starts doing some very disturbing things.

I think I had saw previously that this was a horror movie or something in that vein, so it took me a while to decide to watch it. While scrolling through movies on YouTube, it popped up and I thought I’d go ahead and check it out. In my agreeing to watch said movie I didn’t fully remember the genre it was set in, but quickly found out. No more than twenty... twenty five minutes into the movie did my anxiety start to show itself. Now I’ve seen plenty of Macaulay Culkin films in my life, but this is the one where I’d say he seemed to loose all of his innocence and I’m not sure I can ever trust him again.

The kids in this movie look like they’re 10, but are often treated like they’re 13/14 years old. They’re left to their own devices, to run around town pretty often and even do some babysitting from time to time. I couldn’t quite tell ages, but the level of the specific kind of trust that was given to those boys was a little foreign to me. Maybe knowing it was a horror movie made that all seem weird, but I also grew up in a Black household, so there was never that many secrets you could openly have. They’re the type of kids Netflix would make a documentary on, and not cause they were doing amazing things with their young lives.

The Good Son wasn’t what I planned to watch next on my “fluffy pop culture, baby-thriller“ horror journey, but here we are and long story short, I am uncomfortable. I don’t know if I’m full blown scared, however I can see why some kids who watched this movie as a child felt rather traumatized by it. As an adult watching this movie, I feel like it tests you, just to see if you don’t think some kids are little a-holes. For younger audiences though (if their parents let them watch this one) I think it plays them like they played Mark and said “be brave, we’re only having fun.” That being why I don’t watch horror movies.

Note: This is more thrilling than graphically horror, but it teeters on that line, at lease to me.

I wanted to give it 3 stars, then I realized it was trying to get me to make a weird emotional, almost moral decision at the end, which dropped it down for me. It also could have been a little more fleshed out in the ending as well. Thrilling for sure, but not the best “thriller/drama/horror” movie I’ve ever seen. That being said, when it involves kids some things feel a little more unsettling.

Bonus Thoughts (Mainly On The Ending) SPOILERS INCLUDED:

Here are my main grievances with the ending. First off, getting a kid who’s maybe no older than 11, to question whether or not he was saved from pending death over his cousin, because he thought his mother had essentially reincarnated herself into his aunt and just chose him to live or if his aunt was so hurt by her son’s actions that she ultimately let him die because of them, is hella much. So then, I, as the audience, am supposed to ponder over what choice was the right choice for the aunt to make in all of this mess, rude! I did not appreciate that at all.

Second, Mark’s father gets negative points. Your son calls you and tells you that his cousin is an attempted murderer and you sound like he’s just going through a hard time right now. You don’t cut your trip short or make more than one phone call, to where you can talk to an actual adult, you simply stay put. I was waiting for the father to show up in the nick of time and surprise, he never did. They don’t even wrap up his story line, as to say what happens when he comes back home, we’re just left hanging. That goes for the Mark’s uncle and the therapist as well. Like I want to know all those last bits of the story that they decided to cut out in the name of being climatic. They could have eased us down a little bit slower, had they given us some of the clean up.

“what are we?”

looking up at jack, you adjusted your jeans to your waist. “what?” you chuckled, not understanding where the question came from in the first place.

“i’m just— curious. this doesn’t feel like… normal to me.” jack shrugged, pulling his black tee over his head. “what exactly is ‘normal’ to you jack?” your gaze lingered on his broad shoulders and buff arms, trailing down to his wrist adorned with hair ties and bracelets.

“normal being that you should’ve left a couple of hours ago, as soon as you came on my dick, you should’ve been out the fucking door.”

you tilted your head to the side like a lost puppy, your eyes squinted slightly. “i’m not sure what you mean by this.” your giggles chipped at his heart bit by bit.

“— i’m sorry if i made you uncomfortable i didn’t-”

“for fucks sake.” jack scoffed and walked over to you. “you didn’t make me uncomfortable— you-” he cut himself off, unable explain what he was feeling.

“just… answer my question. please.” jack pleaded, flipping his hair from under his shirt. the room felt heavy with unspoken emotions as he mustered up the courage to ask again.

“what are we?”

you pondered the question, looking down at your hands, idly playing with them, picking at the skin slightly. “well, what do you wanna be?”

that’s when it hit you — this was childish, you knew what you wanted; it wasn’t this friends-with-benefits facade. all you wanted, desired, is to be with jack.

“i want to be yours, yn.” his eyes locked onto yours, unwavering. he barely even blinked, searching for some sort of sign, anything. “okay then. you’re mine jack.”

“— and i’m yours.”
