The Vampire Creation Myth
In Rencantun, there's a myth on how vampires were first created. Here it is: (subject to change as always)
Thousands of years ago, there was a prospering human kingdom with a beloved king. This king was so beloved, a wizard guild had blessed him with near immortality. Of course, just because you're loved by your people, doesn't mean any neighboring kingdoms do. As such, the kingdom's enemies sent assassin after assassin, but due to the immortality, they all failed.
The neighboring kingdoms were getting desperate, and so called up an infamous mage to do something, anything, to get rid of him. And so, this mage, came up with something. If you couldn't kill the king, then just make him non-functional. Better yet, a danger to the kingdom. And so, this mage sought out a way to take the king down without killing.
Now, because this is a myth, there's no consistent version. In some, the mage was a warlock, selling their soul for powers no normal mage could access. In others, they were an extremely powerful witch, who mastered the dark arts and could cast terriable curses. In yet others, they were just a very powerful wizard.
All of them end in the same (or similar) way however; the mage inflicts a disease on the king. First, his blood drains, and he loses the color in his skin. Then, he suddenly throws out all his silver and demands for the sun to be blocked. He can't hold anything down, but he's hungry. And in just a few days, he attacks one of his servants, and the vampiric curse spreads.
The kingdom falls in just a few months and the mage disappears. The myths don't mention what happened to the neighboring kingdoms, so it's anyone's guess.
There are plenty of theories about what exactly was the curse. While the name and symdoms are well know, it's a complete mystery how to cast it. The most popular and accepted theory was it was a whole combination of spells and curses, along with the immortality blessing playing a role. The component needed to fully cast the curse is still a mystery after centuries, and it's widely accepted that it's lost and forbidden. The closest anyone has gotten to the og vampiric curse was an attempt a few centuries ago, but the subjects died after a few months.
How "real" this myth is is unknown, but it's the most widely accepted tale in Rencantun.
