River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey
Tumblr media
In the early 20th Century, the United States government concocted a plan to import hippopotamuses into the marshlands of Louisiana to be bred and slaughtered as an alternative meat source. This is true.
Other true things about hippos: they are savage, they are fast, and their jaws can snap a man in two.
This was a terrible plan.
Contained within this volume is an 1890s America that might have been: a bayou overrun by feral hippos and mercenary hippo wranglers from around the globe. It is the story of Winslow Houndstooth and his crew. It is the story of their fortunes. It is the story of聽his聽revenge.

Alright as it is Trans Day of Visibility (Hi still not cis, still here etc.) and the final day of the extended Trans Rights Readathon I thought I would post about a few more of my favorite books by trans authors because hopefully everyone will be reading books by trans authors and about trans characters/topics all year round. Because to me this day is about supporting others in the community as much as anything else. The world is pretty on fire right now so if you can support a trans creator, artist, organization or friend today (and beyond) then do it!
So here are a bunch of shorter reads: books, graphic novels, novellas etc. I didn't really notice how many novellas I had been reading recently till making this list, but there is something about a wel- written short book that just really works for me. Also a lot of these just have really creative or lovely concepts and I am a sucker for those. Plus the characters in these are soooo good! Also a lot of these have lovely audiobooks or e-books, hence me not having a physical copy (yet). Many of these have trans characters as well, but not all of them. Though most have some form of queer rep because I don't read much that doesn't. I included muliple by some of the authors, including sequels because... I just really like them and couldn't pick just one. Most of these authors have other books that are also wonderful. And these are just a handful of examples, there are so many fabuluous books by and about people who are trans.

Why does the American Hippo duology (River of Teeth & Taste of Marrow) not have a massive, active fandom?? It鈥檚 hands down my favorite read this year. It鈥檚 an alternate history story and because of the feral hippos reads like a Quentin Tarantino movie with Oceans 11 heist vibes but make it western.
It鈥檚 the queerest, most violent, and most insanely fun thing I鈥檝e read this鈥檇 year, and maybe ever.
It鈥檚 quirky as hell, the characters are amazing. A casually bisexual out for revenge, a fat French con artist who is the best at what she does, an explosives/poison expert badass enby/ the world鈥檚 greatest assassin who鈥檚 been MIA for a while with a big surprise when she shows back up for the heist (just don鈥檛 call it a caper! Lol)
It鈥檚 just so freaking FUN. I need there to be a fandom y鈥檃ll. I need the art and the fics and the meta and people to hyperfixate about it with me. So. Go read River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow (or get both together, titled American Hippo) by Sarah Gailey.
Then talk to me about it!!

Winslow Houndstooth didn鈥檛 take the job to be a hero. He took it for the money, and he took it for revenge.

queer books for pride month: day 28
American Hippo- Sarah Gailey
Genre: alternative history LGBTQ+ Rep: Bi MC, nonbinary MC, mlx relationship CW: death, guns, gore, alcohol, animal death, fire
Plot: In an America that never was, the US government introduced herds of hippos to the marshlands to be bred and slaughtered for meat. What they failed to take into account was the sheer strength and brutality of these animals. Now, Wilslow Houndstooth, a hippo rider, has been contracted to reclaim these marshlands.
Why I'd recommend this series: This is such a short, fast-paced collection of novellas and short stories. I'd highly recommend it for anyone who (like me) struggles with focussing on a book for too long. It's creative, it's exciting, and it's gory. Hippo cowboys (hippoboys?), what more could you ask for?

River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey review
I really wanted to love this book.
The good:
premise: in an alternate history, the US government implemented hippos as domesticated livestock. A team of rogues are hired to remove a herd of feral hippos from Louisianna.
characters: despite being rather shallow (mostly due to the short length), these are good characters. Winslow has strong motivation. Archie is a charming thief. Hero is too bored to stay retired. Adelia is cool and badass while pregnant. Cal is mostly there to be mocked and kicked around, but he has interesting history with WInslow (tho not an ex-boyfriend like I initially assumed).
The bad:
length: it's less than 200 pages, that's not nearly enough room to expand these characters and have a fascinating plot.
character deaths: two named characters die not far past the halfway point and beside the initial shock, it just felt underwhelming. one was sad and shocking but the character could be cut out with little change. the other was actively disappointing and a waste of a potentially interesting character.
romance: on the one hand, I like that there's romance between Winslow (bisexual man) and Hero (nonbinary) and it's not weirdly done. but it feels shallow. They flirt, they have one intimate conversation about Winslow's backstory, they flirt some more, and are apparently in love by the end. And there is the thing where we have two queer characters of color (Winslow's ambiguously biracial I think, Hero's probably Black) and neither seem to have much impact of them? there's a couple passing references that imply the setting is still racist/sexist/etc, and yet they might as well be a white straight couple for how much it affects them. The diversity is nice (Cal is the only straight and white guy of the group) but it's not much more than visual flavor, which feels like a missed opportunity.
It's not bad for what it is, there are fun moments. i just couldn't shake the feeling while reading of "oh, is that it?"

American Hippo contains the novellas River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow by Sarah Gailey.
I am always recommending these books and so grateful that they were recommended to me. This story was so much fun and the characters are fantastic. Set in a version of 1890's America where hippos were imported to the Mississippi. Think western but with hippos instead of horses/cattle.

I see very little fan art for River of Teeth so if I have to learn how to draw cowboys and hippos to get it, by god, I'm gonna learn how to draw cowboys and hippos then.

For a fictional take on what the US could've been like if this bill pushed through, I highly recommend Sarah Gailey's American Hippo, which collects the novellas River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow in one volume.
