Steves mom gets a cat. He's a chubby boy who hates being picked up, hates getting too much attention and doesn't like playing. He likes to do his own thing and sometimes sit next to someone so they can pet him for maybe ten minutes. Steves mom thinks hes perfect.

But then they leave, just two weeks after getting the cat, leaving Steve to take care of him. Steve is so sure it's going to be miserable. He doesn't need something else to ignore him at home. He'd rather be alone than feel the sting of rejection.

But the cat loves him. Steve starts calling him Baby so much that it sticks- Steve even forgets what his actual name is and Baby won't respond to anything else. He won't respond to anyone else. He's obsessed with Steve.

He always yowls at the doors when Steve tries to close them, scratching at them. He sits and meows when Steve has things on his laps, not shutting up until Steve makes space for him to curl up on him. He's always in Steves room, sleeping on his bed or the pile of old clothes so he's surrounded by Steves scent.

He even lets Steve pick him up. Not for long but, whenever he does, Baby uses the excuse to nuzzle his neck, rub his cheek on Steves, lick behind his ears. He's always purring when Steve is touching him.

One time, when Eddie had been getting a little rough with Steve, Baby had attacked him. Scratching and biting until he bled quite a lot, hissing whenever he tried to go near Steve the rest of the night. He wouldn't even let Eddie give Steve a goodbye kiss.

The dynamic is very clear after that; Steve is Babys human, and as long as that cat is around, no one is allowed to hurt him.

Is dad home yet?” Martha draws her hand back hesitantly and says his name. Bruce already knows that that means there's bad news. She tells him, “But there was an emergency,” which makes Bruce snap, “There's always some emergency!”

Bruce continues to stand in front of the window as Martha looks at him. Bruce announces, “I'm gonna wait for him. Even if it takes all night!” as he tensely clenches the handle of his sword. Martha reaches out for him sadly and suggests, “Bruce, I could take you out myself. Or, we can call some of the other children at school and go out with them.” Bruce, as an adult, somberly says off panel that, “she doesn't know...” as his kid self stares out the window still. His hat casting a small shadow on his face as he tells her, “There are no other kids to call. I have no friends at school.” Martha says his name again but doesn't know how to comfort him. Instead, she just silently places a hand on his shoulder. We see a silhouette from far away of her standing next to him as Bruce waits for his father to eventually come home. END ID]

doing a lot of thinking about how scared sam was as a child

in the pilot we learn sam left hunting, not because he wanted normal but because he wanted safe.

in a draft of the pilot script, sam says he doesn't want to help dean find john because he "just stopped having nightmares" (obviously taken out because it would contradict later plot lines with sam having nightmares about jess dying but i wish they had replaced it with something similar because i think a lot less people would think of sam as selfish if we had got to hear it)

we also get this scene in 1x04

this is four episodes into the show! sam has been back in hunting for a month? maybe? and he is already having nightmares about the job again (and while dean tries to act tough, sam sees straight through him and knows that he's scared too)

hunting again is bringing back bad feelings that he thought he'd left behind but at this point, he is motivated to find his father and avenge jessica so he pushes through his fear, as a kid he didn't have these things to fuel him. he was just this sad lonely little child who was terrified out of his mind about all of the evil in the world that he should have been sheltered from!! terrified that his dad and his brother were going to be killed anytime they were out of his line of sight!!

in conclusion, i could've raised him, i could've kept him safe
