December 3, 2023:
Dearest People of the Page. This is Christopher. In a little over a week from today this page will be marking the sad, two year anniversary of Anne's passing. While I've been moved by the response here to my sharing of personal recollections of my life with Anne, I'm curious to hear how you'd like us to mark this sad anniversary. Should it be a time for celebrating her legacy or would you prefer a more [somber] remembrance? Perhaps I should invite all of you to share your favorite quote from Anne's novels and I can share the posts to the main feed accordingly? And some of you might prefer we simply mark the day in passing and focus more posts and energies on days like her birthday and the anniversary of the publication of INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE. The tone and energy of this page is largely up to you as we bring her legacy forward. Meanwhile, plans for Anne's Celebration of Life in New Orleans are deepening and accelerating and we should have some more updates soon. In the meantime I'm sharing this photo of Anne from her office in our San Francisco home This would have been taken right around the time she was writing THE VAMPIRE LESTAT in the mid-1980's. Love, Christopher Rice

Happy Birthday to Anne Rice! Plus, to Louis de Pointe du Lac. For Louis', I put in Matt Bomer (her pick), Jacob Anderson (AMC's pick), the Broadway Louis (I would've had him stand with the guys but wasn't sure where so he's a picture on the wall), and since brad pitt hated playing Louis ANND worse produced Blonde which was a disrespectful movie to Marilyn Monroe, he's in the fireplace. Also I wouldn't know where to put him either. Also I wanted Jacob to sit in the chair but I had a hard time finding a pic of him sitting down. I did find one but it looked like he's sliding off it. :( So I had him stand. Took me a while to do the second one. The first one (her present) was very very easy though. Okay somewhat cause I also had to make sure the pics would fit.

I found this when I was going through Anne Rice's old Facebook page, that's still available to look at even tho she died last year, they still didn't delete her Facebook page so fans can still look at it in loving memory of her.
But this comment Anne Rice wrote really stood out to me so I screenshot it and I'm posting this.
Because I've seen racist fans complaining about Louis and Claudia being played by black actors.
This is proof that Anne Rice wasn't racist.
She literally said she hated the Queen of the Damned movie because it was not accurate to her book at all and the fans hated it.
But Anne Rice wrote that she thought the ONE GOOD THING about the Queen of the Damned movie was Akasha was played by a LOVELY BLACK WOMAN in the film.
Anne Rice expressed that fans of color who read her books often felt "left out" in her fantasy world because most of her characters were white so she was happy that the fans of color were able to identify with Akasha's character in the film.
Anne Rice actually LIKED that the film showed diversity and people of color representation by changing Akasha's character to black, she thought it was a good thing.
So this means Anne Rice would NOT have cared about Louis and Claudia being played by black actors.
In fact if you watch the end credits of each episode Anne Rice's name is listed as one of the producers of the show:
Tumblr media
Anne Rice had been trying to get a TV show made of her books for years and she finally was able to do it, she was helping to work on the show before she died, so unfortunately she didn't get to see it. 😭
But I'm 100% sure Anne Rice knew Louis and Claudia would be played by black actors and she was fine with it.
So the racist fans complaining about it needs to shut up.

Armand/flower imagery is THE unsung OTP of vc 🥹 there’s so much of it throughout the whole series. I’ve also been thinking about how Anne repeatedly compared him to female mythological creatures. Lestat and his “succubus” comparison immediately comes to mind of course (Anne could’ve easily had Lestat call him an incubus, the male counterpart, but she went with the female version), but also there’s Daniel saying Armand had pursued him the cunning of a “harpy” during the early stages of their relationship. So you have flowers, female demons/monsters/mythical creatures and that one red headed robot(?) lady who served as her original inspiration for Armand. Character of all time fr xoxo DA ❤️
DA! 🥹🌺🌸 I missed you (even though the fault is purely mine for purposely scaling back on Tumblr and not really posting much of anything to respond to lately, haha).
I don't think it's much of a confession if I say I'm never not thinking about Lestat referring to Armand as a succubus! Right, the distinction there with the gendered form is interesting to me as well and I got curious on the exact etymology because while Anne might have been all over the place in some regards, I do think she was very intentional when it came to mythology and overall symbolism in her work. And either way whether you take it seriously or not, it's just fun to think about!
So, aside from the obvious gender difference between male and female — incubus in itself is defined as and derived from:
"imaginary being or demon, credited with causing nightmares, and, in male form, consorting with women in their sleep," c. 1200, from Late Latin incubus (Augustine), from Latin incubo "nightmare, one who lies down on (the sleeper)," from incubare "to lie upon" (see incubate). X
Now compare that to succubus:
late 14c., alteration (after incubus, giving a masc. form to a word generally felt as of female meaning) of Late Latin succuba "strumpet," applied to a fiend (generally in female form) having sexual connection with men in their sleep, from succubare "to lie under," from assimilated form of sub "under" (see sub-) + cubare "to lie down" (see cubicle). X
Let's be clear, Lestat—proud, powerful, and apprehensive as he is during this meeting with Armand—is in no way, shape, or form going to be laying beneath anybody. It's subtle because both incubi and succubi do take advantage of their victims, but at least within the word itself, one positions the demon beneath and not above.
Fun, right?
Harpy is something to think about too! Literally a terrifying creature that carried its victims off of the face of the Earth, never to be heard from again. Yikes. Wonder if Daniel's family ever heard from him again aside from those checks going out... Oops.
Robot lady, my beloved! Moira Shearer in The Tales of Hoffman (1951). Anne did say this as far as her having served as an inspiration for Armand:
[...] there was a companion to Hoffman who had beautiful red hair and was very angelic. The character was played by a woman, but as a child, I don't remember realizing that it was a woman. I remember the character as a transcendent person, and I thought it was Hoffman's guardian angel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Very strange, very beautiful, very Armand.
And one last thing since we're already speaking of 'guardian angels' and I can never resist this quote:
"You're looking for trouble again," he [Armand] went on, in the same slow manner, without anger or meanness. "The whole wide world isn't enough for you and never will be. This time I thought I'd try to speak to you before the wheel turns."
"Aren't you the most thoughtful of guardian angels?" I said sarcastically.
"Yes, I am," he said without so much as blinking. ~ Lestat, MtD
Armand, once again taking on the role of Lestat's guardian angel.

When Anne Rice said “I do have fantasies about going around in a black limousine and killing every visible pimp I can find. You know, inviting them into the limo, spreading the whole thing with plastic so they don’t bleed and shooting them. Anybody who’s been brutal to women and made them prostitutes and hurt them and killed them. I have many fantasies of doing that, but I will never do it..I don’t think” I felt that

am kinda on the fence abt Mayfair Witches so far -- it doesn't feel anywhere near as sumptuous as iwtv, and the story feels kinda,,, rushed? idk, the buildup to the deaths in ep1 wasn't really there for me -- what makes especially lemle's death impactful for rowan in the book (where it's part of her backstory obviously) is that he's her mentor, she's been working with him for years, and she's almost corrupted by him
I don't remember keck at all, I think he's made up for the show? idk -- but it also feels odd that they would make up a new character for rowan to kill instead of using her adoptive dad
I do like that we got to see ellie mayfair and that she got a bit of a story
I don't mind that ellie knows abt the talamasca (can't remember if she knew in the book) or that she contacts them, but I don't like that they've combined michael and aaron into one character; I've always loved michael for the contradictions of him (blue collar, self made, college educated, intellectual) and combining him with aaron kinda erases those contradictions -- and I think some of the story is lost if michael isn't there with his new orleans background and his near-death experience
(also, erasing michael means erasing the meet-cute of rowan saving him from drowning which sucks)
(wanna stress this is nothing to do with the actor being black; I would've loved for a black man to play michael -- that could even work as a change from the Irish roots of book!michael)
having the guy who's gonna become the love interest be a member of the secret magic society kinda feels too --- cw teen drama imo
also aaron lightner is just a neat guy, like, he's old, he's british, he's an intellectual, he's psychic, he's everyone's grandfather, idk, I just love him, and I think removing him takes smth away from rowan -- denies her a guide in a way
actually, that also does smth to the dynamic between rowan and michael/ciprien bc in the books it's like. rowan is far superior intellectually to michael, and there's no doubt she's in charge; as outsiders to the supernatural world, they're on even footing re. knowledge of what's going on, but by making ciprien a member of the talamasca, they lose that equality; now he's suddenly the one with answers, the guide she has to look to -- and I don't like that
I'm very curious to see what's gonna happen with deirdre tho bc the preview kinda suggested that she's gonna wake up from her sedation -- which would be a humongous departure from the books (and not a change I'm personally in favour of)
also its seems they've combined carlotta and nancy into one character which just. Doesn't work
I do very much like alexandra daddario tho, I think she's really well-cast, and the same goes for harry hamlin as cortland -- cortland has always been a favourite character of mine, and harry hamlin seems to have hit the nail on the head with him

I think we have to concede that Anne Rice and Smeyer are the same kind of wild and problematic but just with different denominational flavors.
