i have been crying about this for days. the arabic language is so beautiful. i am both thankful to this artist for sharing this gorgeous song with us, and torn to pieces thinking about how much pain she must be in watching her home get destroyed and her people suffer.
she mentions sending peace on an olive branch. edit: "olive" means zaytun (زيتون) watch out for this word if you read/see/hear Palestinian art, the cultural context will help you understand the message more. besides the olive branch being a well known symbol for peace (it's even on the United States dollar AND the United States Seal) there is a rich historical and cultural context behind this lyric. for those who don't know, Palestine has been known for its olive trees for millennia. some of the oldest living olive trees in the entire world are in Palestine (although i really don't know if they are still standing at this moment). olives are well-loved and crucial to Palestinian cuisine, as well as being a major source of income, since many Palestinians are olive farmers and have been for generations. a symbol for peace, harmony, friendship, resilience, and perserverance, the olive tree represents Palestinian spirit, and olive leaf patterns are also featured on the Palestinian keffiyeh.
there is another lyric where she says "in the land of peace, peace is dead." one english transliteration of this arabic phrase is "fi 'ard alsalam mat alsalam" with 'ard (أرض) meaning land/earth, al-salam or more commonly salam (سلام) meaning peace, and mat (مات) being a conjugation from the word mawt (موت) meaning death. (I'm not sure in which tense, arabic has so many tenses and I don't want to spread misinformation, my knowledge of the arabic language is like 1st grade level and mostly from osmosis due to growing up Muslim and having early exposure to the language through the Quran and basic classes at Islamic school, and I'm not even a practicing Muslim anymore, so pls feel free to correct my mistakes) lyrically, it was this phrase that stuck out to me the most, because of the emphasis placed on "peace" through its repetition. in the land of peace, peace is dead; Palestine is The Holy Land in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. peace was the foundation of the land, not just peace meaning lack of war but peace as in spiritual peace, the kind of peace that fills your heart with love for this world and the people in it. now that this peace is being actively destroyed, Palestine is losing itself. Elyanna (the singer) is saying that her home is being gutted from the inside out, until it's unrecognizable, until it lacks the one thing that MADE Palestine; peace. It is heartbreaking.
The reason I am sharing this song and breaking down this lyric is because I want to re-humanize the Arabic language and Arab culture. It has been demonized for far too long, and it was/is on PURPOSE. IDF soldiers bombing Al-Shifa hospital and claiming (lying) that they found a list of Hamas guards and hostages (that were never in the hospital) when it was a CALENDAR and the only names of "Hamas guards" listed were fucking Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, is exactly what I mean when I say that the world has been so successfully brainwashed against MENA (the Middle East and North Africa) that even the Arabic language itself, written or spoken, is perceived as inherently violent and threatening.
I hope this post has contributed in helping you unlearn the racism and anti-Arab/anti-Middle Eastern propoganda you have been taught.

I've scrolled through many liberal zionist blogs on tumblr. I've been looking for these bloodthirsty demon Jews you describe. And I can't find them.
All I see is people working to end a 100 year cycle of violence. I know it will be a sad day for you when they succeed and the violence ends. So you promote the extremism that ensures further violence. You probably know on some level how conflict resolution works and you know it requires recognition of humanity. But you prefer violence so you avoid anything that resembles conflict resolution. You think it's both-sides nonsense and you want nothing to do it. You're prepared to suggest that every Palestinian should die on this hill while you watch.
When you can demonize a global minority like Israeli citizens, it helps you relax. It helps you make sense of a complex world. I understand. The reality that millions of Israelis dedicate their lives to ending this violence disturbs you. They must all be lying, right? They must secretly gather in basements and drink baby blood and so on. This is why you'll never read the opinions of any Isreali. You already know all you need to know about baby blood. So you don't need to actually read what they think. "OP speaks Hebrew! Block and stay safe!"
i can very easily imagine the type of person that sends an essay to a brown woman accusing her of wishing for "extremist" violence to continue forever. unfortunately you're not very good at it. i follow very closely the work of ofer kassif, an israeli who- surprise surprise, posts in hebrew. this is just one of the israelies IN israel whom i respect. i have supported numerous jewish voice for peace projects here in the states.
also, your anti semitism accusations are also falling flat, as my partner for three years is matrilneraily ashkenazi, and for 3 years i have had to defend him and jews at large to actual anti semites in my family.
you can accuse those of us who chant "from the river to the sea" of extremism. but that won't change the fact that we are currently LIVING in a two-state solution world, and it is FAILING. because israel does not exist to protect jews, it exists to protect america's colonial interests.
i was going to go on regarding how israel actively endangers every jew not in israel, how it destroyed ashkenazi culture (yiddish is now an endangered language), its extreme racism towards ethiopian jews, its contempt for mizrahi and sephardic jews (who were intentionally settled by the gaza aparthied wall to serve as a shield for white jews), but i know it will fall on deaf ears.
in the words of palestinian revolutionary, leila khalid, "to the million jews living here. if you wish to continue living here, you must live side-by-side with the arabs in peace and equality. if you cannot accept that, leave."
i will not respond to you anymore, but it is the palestinians whose humanity for the past 80 years have been denied. no one wishes for the death of israelis. only the death of a racist settlement: israel.

Delusions of many Egyptian nationalists
I find it strange seeing a lot of Egyptian nationalists denying the fact that modern day Egyptians are heavily influenced by Arab culture through out the centuries, claiming things like Egyptians maintaining a huge portion of their indigenous Coptic culture(if not all of it). The first step of solving an issue is actually acknowledging it, which isn't the case for most nationalists due to their continuous denial of the issues in Egyptian society. Now we have modern day Egyptians, who name their kids Arab names, speak Arabic, not speak a word of Coptic, and with a fundamentally Islamic nature. So the question is; Where is the Egyptian culture in all of this? The oxford definition of culture is "the customs and beliefs, art, way of life, and social organization of a particular country or group." According to this very definition, there is vaguely any difference between modern-day Egyptians and their Arab neighbors in the Arabian peninsula. In fact, millions of Egyptians claim lineage to Arab tribes and to the Islamic prophet Muhammad through certificates made by communities here. Yes, those certificates are mostly inaccurate and do not prove anything, but still, the idea of claiming this makes it safe to say that most Egyptians for the most part identify as Arab culturally and ethnically. Sure, one can say that there are remnants of the old culture through some Coptic loanwords, using an Arabized version of the Coptic calendar and some holidays, but those tiny remnants are not an indication of a cultural continuity by any means. Genetically speaking, modern day Egyptians are descended from the ancients, but unfortunately this does not really play a major role in shaping one's identity, at least in the case of most Egyptians nowadays.
What nationalists should be doing now is Egyptianize Egypt by teaching people about their history, promoting the Coptic language by learning it and try reviving it like how individuals like Claudius Labib tried to. Some of them do that undoubtedly and I respect them immensely, but for the ones who are still in denial of the cultural issues surrounding Egyptian society, I hope they wake up one day to the ugly reality and start doing more.

"To those [Palestinians] who disapprove of Iran, where did you get your rockets from habibi? Don't you applaud the rockets and cheer for them in support of the resistance? Where did you get the rockets that protected Gaza from? You should be ashamed of yourselves!
They say that Iran "exploits the Palestinian Cause to spread Shi'ism" If so, why would it bother with 42+ years of sanctions? Several hundred million of its dollars confiscated, and yet it still takes from its people's food to support and sustain the Palestinian resistance. They don't have to do that. Iran is the only country in the world that has a permanent clause in its budget, from the budget of Iranian people's bread, that pledges support to the Palestinian revolution, regardless of its orientation, whether it was Fatah, the PFLP, the communists, anyone! It never intervened in our ideological conceptions of resistance. It says, "Take, take, become a man and fight"
Iran's problem with America is not new. It did not start with the so-called "Syrian revolution", with all due respect, you bunch of [redacted]! Iran's problem with America started in 1953, when America led a coup d'état against the government of Mosaddeq, and against the will of the Iranian people, who kicked out the shah in 1953, America and Britain came and planned the coup and reinstated the shah, in cooperation with the Mossad.
Iran's vengeance started a long time ago; but it is a nation with dignity and honor, and knows clearly that the American presence is the problem, that the Israeli presence is the problem […]
Iran is your partner culturally, historically, geographically, and religiously, whether you like it or not, they are our partners, and it is their right to lead this current phase [of struggle]. As Arabs, you betrayed all your historical responsibilities, you betrayed your national responsibility and your Islamic responsibility, you even betrayed your linguistic responsibilities and now Iranians speak your language better than you do. There's a fundamental rule in politics: if you do not have your own plan, then you are forced to accept being a part of others' plans, especially since you have nothing to offer. The Turk ruled you and humiliated you and the prints of the Turkish boot are seen all over this great Arab homeland so why shouldn't the Iranian rise? So, you are not impressed by the Iranian project, right? What could possibly impress you? What is the alternative? The lines of those who want to head into a peace process? And how? First we destroy our relationship with Syria, then Iran, and then we go, "Well, we cannot defeat Israel through war, war is futile and destructive, and no one supports us!" You are hypocrites! I swear on the blood of all martyrs, I swear on the blood of Wadee' Haddad the Christian, Soleimani the Shia, and Ahmad Yassin the Sunni, I swear on the blood of all three, that you are liars, and that we the Sunnis are the biggest hypocrites and most guilty of taqiya. Your job is to fortify society against the spread of defeatist thought […] Iran is a country that's been living under sanction for over 40 years. Based on what right does America besiege it? A member of San Diego’s Human Relations Commission was forced to step down this week following a furious response to antisemitic comments he proffered at a meeting of the body on July 18, in which he claimed that the Torah instructs Jews to murder Palestinians.
The resignation of the commissioner, Khaliq Raufi, was announced on Wednesday by San Diego County Supervisor Joel Anderson in a scathing statement.
“Commissioner Raufi’s ignorant comments were hurtful and in no way reflect my personal views, but they do highlight the urgent need to focus on education, bridge building, and to advocate for tolerance,” said Anderson, who appointed Raufi to the 31 member commission. “After meeting with Commissioner Raufi, I have received his resignation letter.”
The city’s Human Relations Commission — which answers to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, the county’s legislative branch — was established in May 2020 to “promote positive human relations, respect, and the integrity of every individual regardless of gender, religion, culture, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, or citizenship status.”
At the July 18 meeting, which was recorded, Raufi told those in attendance that he had read a few verses of the Book of Deuteronomy — the fifth and final book of the Torah — calling it the “Book of Jews.”
“It states, ‘go kill Palestinians — wipe them all out,'” Raufi claimed. “It’s a teaching that they, on a daily basis, teach their followers in their synagogues. So how are we gonna resolve that?”
At this juncture, Raufi was interrupted by an observer, Sara Brown, the San Diego regional director of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), who pointedly asked him, “are you serious right now?”
Brown later expressed her shock that only one of the assembled commissioners — Kate Clark, who works for Jewish Family Services — took Raufi to task for his remarks. “It was so unbelievably shocking in the moment — and even more shocking was the silence of every single commissioner and county staff,” she told the San Diego Union-Tribune.
An editorial in the same outlet quoted San Diego’s Mayor Todd Gloria’s statement that “hate has no place in San Diego and there will be consequences for those who spread it in our city.” It went on to argue: “The county Human Relations Commission, which needs better vetting and training, must take that to heart. Otherwise, what’s the point of it?”
Raufi delivered his speech during a debate concerning a controversy at the commission the previous month, in which another commissioner — George Khoury, a supporter of the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) — denounced Israel as a “racist, fascist state” as he described how his Palestinian family fled from Jerusalem during the 1948 War of Independence.
In a June 20 letter to the commission following Khoury’s speech, local Jewish leaders noted: “Rather than speak about the importance of Arab American Heritage Month, an opportunity to further celebrate diversity in our San Diego community, Commissioner Khoury’s statement negated Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state, diminished the historical Jewish connection to the land, and depicted the creation of Israel as a war crime — language that goes beyond legitimate criticism of Israeli government policies.”

Blackface is done with the intent to mock/caricature so someone who acquire a black skin bc they are dysphoric or sencirely want to a x color of the skin isn't doing a black face. And for you a black person who transition to japanese is what ? Doing a asiaface/japface ? And what is your opinion on drag therefore ? A womanface ?
The accusation of ''White supremacy'' is non-sensical. First is based on the idea that transracials are only white people that idenfies as black, which isn't true. White ppl can idenfy to other white enthicities and black people can identify as white and as other racialized groups (from a western perspective). Most white transracials don't even idenfy as black.. so 🤭💀
Second transracislim doesn't promotes white supremacy since it 1) doesn't have a race-hierachy 2) doesn't put at top of the hierarchy white people/culture. Your claim is bullshit and the same kind of dishonest assertion such as terfs who claim that transgenderism is male supremacy~

Tbh the only reason I'm not deleting this and moving on with my day is because this is almost laughable-- do you seriously understand what any of those words mean, or do you just know that they're Big Important Words that make people feel guilty on reflex instead of actually making a decent argument?
Let's start at the top now, why don't we, and have a good old fashioned vocabulary lesson?
Cultural appropriation refers to the use of objects or elements of a non-dominant culture in a way that reinforces stereotypes or contributes to oppression and doesn't respect their original meaning or give credit to their source. It also includes the unauthorized use of parts of their culture (their dress, dance, etc.) without permission.
I'm going to bet that no self-respecting oppressed culture would let a delusional white teenager take the sacred elements of their culture for their Tumblr aesthetic, so that's already one point for cultural appropriation. Just scrolling through the transrace tag, I see rampant examples of people supposedly appreciating oppressed cultures while only naming off the most stereotypical aspects of them ("I figured out I was transjapanese by watching anime!"). As I stated in the last post, artificially darkening akin contributes to the fetishization of people of color, and this is perpetuated by celebrities like the Kardashians and Ariana Grande who take elements of Black, Latine, and Asian culture to profit off of without any consideration or compensation to the people who are actively discriminated against for showing these elements of their culture in public. Hairstyles, speaking another language in public, wearing traditional clothing-- for people of color, this can lead to harassment, losing their job and education opportunities, and even death, but for white people? "Oh, you're so trendy, that's so exotic of you, what a cool and original style." Cultural appropriation in action.
Bioessentialism
The belief that ‘human nature’, an individual's personality, or some specific quality (such as intelligence, creativity, homosexuality, masculinity, femininity, or a male propensity to aggression) is an innate and natural ‘essence’ (rather than a product of circumstances, upbringing, and culture). The concept is typically invoked where there is a focus on difference, as where females are seen as essentially different from males: see gender essentialism. The term has often been used pejoratively by constructionists; it is also often used synonymously with biological determinism.
So,,, y'all racists see this concept, a concept traditionally use to attack and oppress people of color, and somehow think??? That it applies to YOU?
Okay, let's pretend that is the case.
The thing about bioessentialism is that is doesn't apply to things like race, gender, or sexuality. It applies to things that are stereotyped to be associated with those things. So, Asian people being smart, men being aggressive, gay men being effeminate, etc, etc. The concept of bioessentialism is, pardon my pun, essential to TERF ideology because they believe that if you are born with a certain set of genitals, your gender is inherent, and that includes men being terrible and aggressive and predators.
Let me repeat: bioessentialism is about TRAITS being associated with things like RACE, not RACE ITSELF.
Okay, that's two down.
Blackface

This one is pretty cut and dry, in my opinion. Blackface is racist. Blackface is darkening your skin to appear Black. Therefore, trying to "transition" to a Black appearance is racist.
And, believe or not, yellowface is a thing too!
Yellowface is another example of the racism prevalent in American culture. Yellowface means more than a white person wearing make-up to look Asian. It also describes the systematic bias against hiring real Asians to play Asian roles shown by white producers, directors, and others who control the depiction of Asians in popular culture through casting decisions and the propagation of racist Asian stereotypes and caricatures.
And, to be completely honest, any person of color is trying to "transition" to another race (especially to white) is suffering from some pretty severe internalized racism that they should interrogate with other people of their race who I'm sure understand what it's like to feel alienated from your culture in the deeply racist society we live in.
Good, let's see what's next on the lesson plan...
White supremacy reflects the perpetuation of a false narrative that white people are better than people with other skin colors and ethnic backgrounds. It is when those with the most power across all systems in society fail to adequately reflect the diversity of BIPOC people, and instead maintain the problematic status quo.
I can see how this would confuse you, after all, how could wanting to be another race be perpetuating a narrative of white systemic control over people of color?
After all, it's not like white supremacy contributes to the infant mortality rate in people of color thanks to the slavery-induced stereotype that Black people have higher pain tolerances and therefore don't require the full spectrum of medical attention. It's not like Black children are routinely treated as adults as soon as they enter the academic system, being punished severely for minor offenses that their white peers aren't even given time out for, which lends to the young incarceration of people of color, who are often imprisoned shortly after or even during school. It's not like naming conventions that "sound" Black or Asian or Native or Latine are routinely eliminated from job prospects without any further consideration, because of the ideal that whiteness is more desirable.
It's not like white people routinely benefit from these things without even being aware of it-- the fact that they're born, the fact that they aren't punished as frequently or severely, the fact that they get jobs easier. It's so subliminal, so subtle, and when you do become aware of it, it makes you feel guilty. Because you're getting these things while others are not, without having done anything to earn them.
It's called white guilt.
White guilt describes the guilt brought upon by "the recognition of unearned and unfair racial privileges, the acknowledgment of personal racist attitudes or behavior, and/or the sense of responsibility for others’ racist attitudes or behavior."
When you're forced to confront the racism of yourself and your family and your culture, you can feel revolted by the things that you have been associated with, just by being white. It creates a sense of alienation, a rejection of the white "culture" that is so dependent on the oppression of others, and there are often two responses to it.
You focus on unlearning your own racist behaviors and beliefs, because everyone has them, it's just a matter of how deep they've been buried by years of propaganda. You fight against white supremacy and use your privilege to uplift and defend the people of color who are making their voices heard.
You disengage from it and defend your own behavior. You blind yourself to your own racist thoughts and ideas, claiming that just because you don't act like that means you're not racist. You reject whiteness without supporting people of color, you claim colorblindness, that "we're all the same on the inside."
What transrace/trace individuals have done is the second. In attempts to confront their bigotry, they've circled back around the age-old liberal and centrist posturing, claiming that "I've never treated anyone different" even when you undoubtedly have, and just refuse to recognize the nuance and complexities of whiteness and white supremacy.
It's a part of all of us, even people of color, because we live in a society so ingrained with white supremacy and racism that it becomes the social norm. The pandemic and murders by police have opened many people's eyes to the horrors of white supremacy and how it impacts people of color on a daily basis.
For many, it was a moment of radicalization. Of realizing the true depth of corruption in our government and society that has led to making these behaviors acceptable. It was a moment of making us say "that's not okay" and learning to fight white supremacy not only externally, but internally.
For others, their denial deepened. Their blind trust in the status quo and how things are was enforced by propaganda put out by police and government officials, and they refused to use the pandemic's solitude to interrogate their biases and improve themselves.
I suppose the shorter version of all of this would be to say, if you are uncomfortable with your race, whether it be white or any other, look up some workbooks and thought exercises on white supremacy. Do the work and unlearn the things you've been told. Accept that your past is not perfect, and you may have harmed others by playing into a racist system, but you can do everything in your power from now on to prevent further harm.
And that includes pointing out that seemingly harmless cultural appropriation has a deeply racist history that continues to impact people of color to this day.
Oh and, given that Nigerian Arabic is a common Arabic dialect in Chad, something tells me that there are people out there who are indeed both Nigerian and Arabic, but it would be the cultures they were born and raised into, not the ones they chose out of fascination.

Are Indian People Ashamed Of Speaking Hindi

History of Hindi Diwas Hindi Diwas is celebrated on the 14th of September, to commemorate the adoption of Hindi in Devanagari script as one of the official language in different Hindi speaking states of India. Hindi was adopted as one of the two official languages of the Republic of India by Constituent Assembly of India due to the efforts of Beohar Rajendra Simha along with Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Kaka Kalelkar, Maithili Sharan Gupt and Seth Govind Das. As such, on the 50th birthday of Beohar Rajendra Simha on the 14th of September 1949, the efforts resulted in the adoption of Hindi as an official language. This decision was ratified by the Constitution of India that came into effect on the 26th of January 1950. Under Article 343 of the Indian Constitution, Hindi written in Devanagari script was adopted as one of the official languages. In all, there are 22 Scheduled languages of India. Was Hindi introduced by Mughals ? Many people believe that Hindi was introduced and was spoken by Mughals, but it’s a myth . The official language of the Mughal Empire was Persian - but the language that the elite spoke was a Persianized version of Hindustani, known as Urdu which is the official language of Pakistan today. Mughals were a Persianate society - despite being Turkic in descent, their culture, architecture and language were influenced by the Persian one. Urdu is an Indo-Aryan language with a significant amount of Persian and Arabic influence in its vocabulary. It is also written in Nastaliq, a variant of the Persian script used for Persian calligraphy developed in Iran in the 14th/15th century. Why did the opposition always thwart the move and established the theory of ‘Hindi Imperialism’? Hindi speakers have never claimed that Hindi is somehow "superior" to other regional languages, it is the gimmick of opposition to mislead the people of India . Most Non Hindi speaking people in India merely agree and acknowledge that Hindi is spoken and understood by large sections of the population and it makes practical sense to know this language so that one have access to the largest geographical region in India and it also improves one’s  ability to communicate with the largest number of people outside the home state. It has been noticed that many people feel ashamed to speak Hindi and mostly prefer to speak  in English rather than Hindi where they can show that they are highly educated and updated.In today’s  world knowledge is directly proportional to english speaking skill, if one speaks in english means that person is a very literate . Hence those who don’t even know English try to speak in English . Hindi is our own language , we should spread it to the whole world . Reflections on Language Studies in Senegal, French and Otherwise
In Senegal, I took French classes for five months, three hours a day for five days a week. That’s about 220 hours, total. Carolyn and I shared the classes with two different tutors who came on different days of the week. Those of you who know me know how much time and energy I’ve put into language learning this past decade, and my recent struggles with learning Arabic. Especially just coming off four months in Egypt, my language learning brain was in a strange place when I moved to Senegal in September 2021. On the one hand, French seemed deliriously easy next to Arabic. Yes, there were new sounds, and of course the spelling is laughably complicated, with vowel triplets clustered together. Still, the alphabet was familiar, verb conjugations took a familiar form, sentence order was more or less familiar, and there were lots of cognates.
On the other hand, I found myself struggling more than I ever had with just the motivation to learn. Part of it was the multi-lingual society we were suddenly living in. Though there are many languages spoken in Senegal -Pular, Mandingue, Djiola, Serer- the main local language in Dakar is Wolof. Most of my elder and younger neighbors spoke almost exclusively Wolof, or very limited French. Those are usually some of my favorite people to talk with and hear stories from, the very old and very young. It was not a structure conducive to creating a Franco-phile. I was dually thinking, “Come on, I just almost broke my brain learning arguably the most difficult language in the world!” and “even if I do learn French, my neighbors just want to speak in Wolof anyway!” There was also at least three structures working in my favor to learn French, and so eventually I did. One was the fact that though French was less useful in my neighborhood than I’d hoped, English was even less useful. There were very few Americans or English here, besides tourists going to Goree Island, and in all my many conversations of folks guessing my origin, no one EVER guessed I was American. I could count on one hand the number of people in the neighborhood who spoke conversational English. So, French it was. 
The other factor was just the structure of having language courses every day, which I’ve found is an essential part of my own language learning. If you’re not learning from professional necessity, or romantic interest, but intellectual curiosity, better hire a language teacher. My tutors were friendly and decent teachers for the most part, but just the repetition and presence in front of me over those months built up the base. The final piece was having an accountability partner in Carolyn. I was worried about how we’d fare in class together, both bossy students, but generally we brought out the best in each other’s French learning commitment. It was a bit of tortoise and the hare dynamic. I was the lazier language student for sure, and over time Carolyn’s many late night dance conversations with French speaking friends and constant reading of Harry Potter in French paid off.
With friends from France, I still get lost. The accent and jargon is hard to follow, although I can hold my own in conversations. My Senegalese friends tend to speak a bit slower, and the vocabulary is more familiar. When I stopped taking language courses, writing down new words etc, I plateaued big time. Some new phrases forced their way in through sheer repetition, but the French-language Michael Crichton novel I bought sat unread on the shelf. And that’s okay. I feel comfortable speaking with friends, getting around, reading and writing messages.
Truthfully, I still hold some guilt over prioritizing the colonized language instead of the local one. After I could offer greetings, thanks in Wolof, ask after health and family I stopped actively learning. “You show your respect for the culture through the language” had always served as a guidepost in the other places I’d lived, and here I wasn’t following that logic. Slowing down to spend time with neighbors, even if it was non-verbal, connecting through singing and sports on the beach, spreading out my business with shopkeepers in the village, keeping a long, long list of names and pronunciations in my phone, those were ways I tried to make up for what I lacked in Wolof-speaking capabilities. If we’re not careful in acknowledging our long-term goals when we meet them, the posts just keep on moving. If I’d done it over, I would have tried not to be so hard on myself for focussing on French instead of Wolof. Idealism battles practicality. By most metrics that matter, I can speak French now, and that’s a huge celebration. I’m excited to connect with the West African French speaking community back in Aurora. A bientôt.

So.Where to begin.
What you should know is, this isn’t my fault. It’s @misskirby who is to blame for this. She has this AMAZING fic, it’s called Benediction. I like to read it weekly, for sustenance. Go read that first if you want...literally any of this to make sense.  So there’s this passage which stole every marble I had, wherein Anakin is explaining the etymology of the Huttese he uses to refer to his children (with a really thorough explanation on Luke’s name. 
Anakin scrubbed the back of his neck. “Huttese doesn’t have—words of love. It doesn’t have… benedictions. It’s kind of a cruel language. There’s a whole case for groveling and then—there’s really only the word for love.”
“And that’s abiya?” Obi-Wan said.
Anakin’s grin was crooked. “No. That’s luke. In the Tatooine dialect, at least, it’s luke. We used—things, mostly, to—you know.”
“Luke,” Obi-Wan said, tasting the word, looking down at the sleeping child he’d just been holding, one who carried his parents’ love for him in his name. For the first time in all his life, he wondered what his own name meant, and who it was who had given it to him.
“Abiya is the milk from a flowering cactus,” Anakin said. “It’s very sweet. And rare. I only ever had it once, with my—my mother.”
Obi-Wan turned to look at Anakin again. The expression on Anakin’s face was raw, intense, but Obi-Wan forced himself to look at it, out of respect for the memories of a woman he owed all of Anakin to; the one who had protected him, loved him, when Obi-Wan hadn’t known he had existed at all.
“It also means the morning rain,” Anakin said, waving a hand. “A lot of words in Huttese have many definitions. Abiya, though—it’s a relief. A respite. Pure joy.”
Obi-Wan swallowed around the burning in his throat. “I see,” he said, strangled.
Anakin looked away, his throat bobbing. “Luke only has the one definition, though. There’s only one word derived from it, too, lukkali. Noun and a verb. A krayt dragon whelp, or—krayt dragons, the mothers, their carry their whelps in their mouths, because there’s no place on Tatooine that’s safer, so it’s also the act of doing that.”
I LOVE this passage. I love all of the work it does emotionally, narratively, etc. It’s the best. And yesterday morning, I zeroed in on a specific line. “In the Tatooine dialect” Except hold on, I thought to myself. Anakin was born a slave. What if, when he says the Tatooine dialect, what he means is...the dialect of the slave class? 
So here’s the thing. The Hutt society is based on the idea that the Hutts are the prime race, there was the whole Hutt empire thing, I mean the holiday the Boonta Eve Classic is supposed to commemorate is literal holiday that commemorates a Hutt ascending to godhood, during the process of which all of his slaves renew their vows of fealty. It’s not just a class system, where you can you know, in theory move between classes. This is a strict caste system, which you are born into or are captured into. Which got me thinking - what if the language of Huttese has a dialect system...based on caste? We see examples of this sort of socio-linguistic pattern in actual real life!! Tamil and Arabic are some pretty famous examples where certain historical societies who use that language break down that language based on caste, with their different varieties having all sorts of different meanings and cultural connotations, but there’s a ton of them. And in fact, there’s tons of societies which base their dialects on social or other cultural factors.
There’s even a name for it: diglossia, where a society as a whole uses one language but different parts use radically different dialects and forms of that language in different circumstances. Now, strictly historically, how diglossia typically works is that one dialect is seen as a low (L) dialect and one is seen as a high (H) dialect. And get this - in diglossic societies which also contain really severe social inequality - in some cases the dialects can seem almost unintelligible to those who speak the opposite dialect And then based on that passage I posted above, I thought...what if the unintelligibility in this certain case, specifically the unintelligibility between “high” huttese and the dialect spoken by slaves wasn’t surrounding the actual words or structure...what if it was /context/.
So basically in the last thirty six hours I’ve....I’ve made an entire headcanon on Huttese as a trifold diglossic dialect system. I’m putting it under the cut because God its, its a lot guys. Its a lot. Also? It’s written as though its an entry in sociolinguistic glossary of sort, because of course it is. Who wrote that glossary? Space nerds. Nerds in space. Nerds in space from Coruscant University who need research credits for their space masters degrees. 
For the purposes of this glossary, the modern caste system of the Hutt Clan has been recorded below. 1. Masters 2. Servants* 3. Slaves The reader should be aware that there is technically a high caste called “Grand Masters”, which historically was comprised of members of the Grand Hutt Council and their families. This caste used a dialect usually referred to as “Archaic Huttese”, and is the source dialect of Huttese, originally developed on the Hutt home planet of Nal Hutta. However, this language has long fallen out of common use.  The reader should also note that belonging to the Servant caste does not imply any quality of servitude per se. Rather, this is the caste of all ordinary free people who live under Hutt Rule. This designation is believed to have originated in the understanding within the ancient Hutt empire that any being who lived under Hutt dominion was by rights a servant to any Hutt who should need them.  The dialects of the castes are as follows.  1. The dialect of the master class is also known as “High Huttese”. The common dialect of all high-born Hutts, and widely adopted by non-Hutts who own slaves or hold positions of authority within Hutt society. This dialect is used in all interactions involving a master, whether between a group of masters or a master and a lower-caste member. With Hutt families whose bloodlines have been regarded as a part of the master class for several centuries, there is a curious strain of monolinguism in an otherwise highly polylinguistic society, with many high born Hutt families refusing to learn even the fundamentals of standard Basic. The reasoning for this seems to be a cultural belief held by the masters that any person of a lower caste bends to the needs of the masters, rather than the other way around. The historical risk of a master’s displeasure upon improper address has led to this dialect becoming the default in conversation unless you are absolutely sure of another person’s caste, since historically the risk of offense should you choose wrong was often very high. There are at least three different cases of blood feuds between members of Hutt Master families which involved the use of a lower caste dialect as a cause of offense. 
This default status of this dialect means that when a person in the Republic references “Huttese”, they are almost always referencing the master dialect. The master dialect is what is taught in the schools of the Republic. This has led to a sort of self-perpetuating cycle. As interactions with the rest of the galaxy have shifted to singular dialect, the use of the master dialect has become more solidified within common Hutt Society, even when the speaker is aware that Low Huttese would be acceptable. 
It should be noted that this exception applies only to free people. Slaves are required by Hutt law to use this dialect when speaking Huttese to any non-slave they interact with, even if that person does not belong to the Hutt caste system. The Hutt law imposing this requirement famously reads, “Because all beings are above a slave, a slave should speak to every being in the tongue of their masters.” The penalty for a slave addressing a master in anything but the high dialect is often some sort of physical punishment. A rather gruesome tradition which is kept in force to this day.  2. The servant dialect is also called “Low Huttese”. While originally it was relatively distinct from both the dialect spoken by the masters and the dialect spoken by the slaves of Hutt Society, it has since suffered a bit of stagnation. There are many factors which could cause this to occur. As the Republic opened up more and more channels of commerce to Hutt Space, and the Master dialect has become the norm outside of Hutt Society, true enforcement of the linguistic standard for non-enslaved beings has fallen much to the wayside in the last two standard centuries or so. Modern Low Huttese dialect is thus mostly similar to the Master dialect in grammar and generally accepted vocabulary. However, a remaining diversion exists which is based on pronunciation, and a significant reliance on rather course slang on the part of those who speak Low Huttese. It has been said by Huttese linguistic scholars that while High Huttese is a an excellent dialect for threats, Low Huttese is an excellent dialect for swearing.  3.  The slave dialect has no name in any official Hutt or Republic record. It is not recognized by any authority in either written or spoken form. In fact, generally the only beings who know or speak the slave dialect are those who are or who once were enslaved, and their loved ones. The dialect differs rather severely from high huttese - though primarily through meaning and cultural context, rather than actual structure. 
It seems that this “hidden” diversion was born of necessity, rather than choice. The masters didn’t like the idea of their slaves having a way of communication the masters were not privy to, and so would punish any slave caught speaking a dialect which was immediately recognizable as being outside of the master dialect. The slave class in the ancient Hutt empire adapted to this by taking the dialect forced upon them, and manipulating a large portion of it for their use. Rather ingeniously, they seem to have developed an entire dialect specifically ordered so that they could express themselves freely without being automatically targeted by a passing master or authority figure. This is the vital distinction: words in the master dialect often have vastly different or even opposite meanings when used in the slave dialect. Added to this complexity are the wide range of connotations and contexts for each word. An interesting note to the slave dialect is that generally, the more abstract a word is, the fewer meanings or connotations it has, whereas often the most culturally impactful words and concepts are taken from simple or every day words. There is only one word for love in the slave dialect - “Luke” - because it is seen as pure, and when given, unconditional. When this word is used, there is no linguistic distinction between platonic or romantic love - the slave class instead relies on idioms or proverbs to express the difference in feeling. In direct contrast, there are nine different ways a person can use the verb which means “to attach”, ranging from the mundane (“Attach these two machine parts together”) to the taboo (“to cause another person to be enslaved”) There are some words which are unique to this dialect, however. One example is the word for “freedom”, which in the slave dialect is “telena”. 
The master dialect’s word for freedom is the same as their word for authoritarian power. Freedom within the master caste, then, was specifically associated with the ability to exercise dominion over the world around them. Members of the slave class, as individuals who constantly suffered under that same authoritarian power, showed a collective repugnance for the association between freedom and the very dehumanization they themselves suffered. Drawing from the use of the anakin plant as one of the most culturally and spiritually significant symbols in the caste (See entry on Anakin, a flowering plant which originated in the deserts of Tatooine but which has since been domesticated throughout the Outer Rim) they instead chose to develop a word based off the Hutt verb “to bloom” One common expression amongst the slave class is “Telena telen ali anakin” - “Freedom blooms with the anakin” Those interested in the study of this dialect, then, are well warned that they should take great care in attempting to communicate in this dialect (if they can find a teacher, that is - many slaves or even those who were formally enslaved are understandably reluctant to give up what is likely one of the only means of expression of not only agency, but of caste solidarity. I have seen two former slaves go from total strangers to kindred spirits in the space of five minutes, upon discovering by means of dialect each others mutual experience.)

Arab Character Joining Corrupt Superheroes, Police Parallels

I’m writing a story with a Arabian diaspora main character. The story is about corrupt superheroes, and how they affect an oppressed superpowered minority. The main character is one of these superheroes, naively joining them in his teens believing he’s going to help people. Doesn’t help that his parents are having money trouble. Eventually he ends up fighting a superpowered crook, and gets a bystander killed.
1)I know portraying an Arabian character committing violence is a pretty touchy subject, even if accidental. Is there any way I can write this that makes it clear to the reader that the action itself is messed up without the unfortunate implication that Arabs are violent? 
2)A large part of the story is the MC’s parents reaction. They are loving parents, however after this incident happens, they are confused and ashamed. While they still love him, they temporarily cut ties with him. Eventually they reconcile and start to be a family again. In my research (they are diaspora Saudi Arabians), Family is very important and tight-nit. Shame towards the family is to be avoided at all costs. However I’ve also read that disowning a family member rarely ever happens. Is there a way to write this kind of narrative with respect to this aspect of Arabian culture?
Let us begin with some terminology.
- If a person is from Saudi Arabia, they are Saudi Arabian, or more commonly, Saudi. This is their nationality.
- They may or may not be Arab. Arab is an ethnicity. Not all Saudis are Arab. Not all Arabs are Saudi.
- Arabic is a language. Lots of people across the world who are neither Saudi nor Arab speak Arabic.
- Arabian on its own is a word used to refer to a specific breed of horses.
If you are referring to humans, you want to either say "Saudi Arabian" (both words) or “Saudi” to indicate nationality, or "Arab" to indicate ethnicity. If you’re looking to describe your character’s culture, you probably want to call it Saudi culture. (While grammatically correct, talking about “Arab culture” doesn’t make much sense because Arabs are an incredibly diverse ethnic group and there is no such thing as a single monolithic Arab culture).
Now for the first question. In my mind, the issue is less about the character committing violence, and more about the premise of the story and how it mirrors real-life oppressive structures. You have an organized group of superheroes who think they are doing good by fighting “crooks” but in reality are enacting systemic oppression upon a marginalized group. This immediately brings to mind police violence, racial profiling, and the way that policing in North America is used as a tool of white supremacy while glorified in propaganda as a force for good. Essentially, you are telling a story about a character who joins an oppressive policing force, enacts violence upon a marginalized group as a result, and (I’m assuming) eventually realizes that they are not, in fact, the good guys. This is very close to being a “bigoted character learns not to be bigoted” story. I recommend re-examining your premise in light of the real-life parallels and asking yourself whether this is the story you want to tell. 
The issue is compounded by the fact that your character is an Arab teen, who in real life is more likely to be the one facing racial profiling from the police. Taking this character and making him the oppressor in your story makes the already flawed premise even more problematic, especially if the characters in the oppressed group are white.
As for your second question, it seems believable to me that a teen’s parents might reject him if they learned that he committed a crime. However, when the family in question is Arab, you are suddenly feeding into harmful tropes about oppressive and violent Arab parents. You are asking if there is a way to write this respectfully. I believe that there is, but it requires a great deal of care, nuance, and cultural awareness. While it is possible to write a Saudi Arab character grappling with the consequences of violence and familial estrangement in a compelling way, the way your ask is phrased leads me to believe you are not equipped to do it justice.

Think about why Arab people committing violence is a touchy subject, and then think about the general propaganda narrative that came about from the act that made things so touchy. 
It’s going to sound one hell of a lot like what you have here.
Military and police use buckets and buckets of propaganda to continue hooking in young, impressionable teens to commit state-sanctioned colonialism and oppression. That propaganda looks suspiciously like “we have health insurance, we will pay for your education, you just have to do what we tell you even if that means hurting or killing others, but it’s okay because you get to be the hero in the situation.”
Now, propaganda is a very powerful tool. I was taught, in my media classes, that controlling the message means shaping reality. The media is built as a propaganda machine, and when you start to see who owns what media properties you start to see some really disturbing patterns (Rubert Murdoch owns a lot of right-wing sources across America, the UK, and Australia, and he’s too rich to investigate his culpability in spinning terrible narratives found in right-wing publications. He owns the big names).
As Niki said, this situation mirrors police violence and police-sanctioned terrorism. And the very, very unfortunate implications of making the target of police violence be in that wheel. But I want you to look at the media situation that has made the plot happen.
Because even if you swapped out ethnicities, you’d still have a reckoning to do with the American culture that their primary social safety nets involve killing people.
I am not kidding.
Some of the most well-funded unions in the country are police unions. These people have pensions. They have health insurance. It’s damn near impossible to fire them. They get overtime very well mandated, and it’s a known thing among defence lawyers that arrests happen right before a cop’s shift will end so they get the overtime of filing the paperwork. They absolutely go into poor neighbourhoods and recruit based off people needing an escape, and them having the money to provide it.
A similar sentiment is true for the military, except they push for college education a bit more and don’t really have overtime, but they do have deployment bonuses. So the way to get extra pay for yourself is to go out and do colonialism outside the borders. The military doesn’t necessarily like it when the economy is doing well, and don’t like the idea of college being affordable, because they rely so heavily on poverty and fear of college debt to recruit. 
The story you’re telling here goes so far beyond an individual’s actions and instead taps into America’s single biggest cultural investment: that oppressing others makes you a hero. 
The Pentagon funds most military media out there as a propaganda tool, including most superhero movies and a large number of video games. This is in their budget. They will also go so far as to literally commission the games to exist. Part of getting that funding is you cannot critique America’s military, basically at all (the only exception I’ve seen is Ms Marvel, but that’s set in the 90s). This turns any sort of military-using media into a potential propaganda tool.
And the thing is? Even if you fall for that propaganda and were part of the military or the police, you still have to reckon with the fact you put whatever your own desires were above a huge track record of those groups being terrible. You still have to reckon with the fact you didn’t realize they were wrong, and were complicit in a lot of crimes.
This goes very far beyond “the action is terrible” and goes into “the system is rotten to its core, and you chose not to believe it, or to believe you could change what was built with blood.”
“Good” police officers get fired. If you try to question anything, if you try to say this action is wrong, you will absolutely get destroyed. Military’s much the same. You need some degree of buy-in to the concept of white supremacy to sign up for the military or the police, because you need to see their actions as not deal breakers instead of actions that violate multiple international laws. 
In short: you need to see the people being oppressed as deserving of being oppressed to some degree in order to participate with police and the military.
Marginalized people can hold this belief, it happens. But that is a very sticky situation that outsiders shouldn’t touch. 
It’s possible but difficult for you to write a white person having this sort of arc, but it would be extremely challenging to have it not come across as a white guilt story. To not have a socially aware audience roll their eyes at how long it took. You’d definitely not be writing a story with a diverse audience in mind, because you’d mostly appeal to those who saw the propaganda as just fine and not that bad.
This isn’t even getting into the oft-cited adage that boys who bully others become cops, while girls who bully become nurses. And the more police atrocities become mainstream news, the less and less people can convince themselves that becoming a police officer is a good thing.
Which brings me to the point of: how well-documented is this oppression? Is this character walking around in an oppressive situation like, say, pre-social-media where there was no direct access to the oppressed groups and you could close your eyes and look away even if it made national news? Or is this in a media connected world where these oppressed populations have a voice in the narrative?
The former has an angle of the character slowly realizing the horror and it’s slightly more forgivable for their early ignorance. But in any sort of world where there’s access to the people getting hurt? Things get more and more “ignorance is indistinguishable from maliciousness.” And keep in mind, these stories are read in the real world, where police brutality and war crimes go viral, and a lack of knowledge is getting harder and harder to defend as a position.
Media plays a huge role in shaping our perception of what’s happening. Cameras on a situation makes different activism tactics work, as we can see with how activism changed in the 60s and 70s as tv reached the masses. Social media has made it possible for you to look up firsthand accounts of discrimination within seconds. 
This is a factor you are absolutely going to have to consider, when you want to look at how nice your hero is seen by marginalized or otherwise socially-aware people. If there is a way to find out how bad this superhero organization is before you sign a contract with them? Then that doesn’t look particularly good on the “hero”. You’d really have to establish them as super idealistic, super sheltered, super desperate, and/or just swallow the knowledge that they really don’t see anything that happens “over there to those people” as that bad. 
All of the above is more than possible. And they’d still be seen as complicit no matter what justification you gave, because they are.
Does this mean all corrupt organization stories are off limits? No. The reason these stories have such deep cultural resonance right now is because of the propaganda I outlined above. 
But you as the author are going to have to examine your own engagement with the propaganda narrative and do your own private reckoning so your own sense of guilt and compliance doesn’t bleed through the narrative too strongly, so you can tell a good story instead of an overt message story that’s you working out your own feelings.
By all means, write a story where police and the military are taken down, where propaganda is weaponized and the media is controlled (because that’s sure as hell the modern world). 
But know that stories where the hero discovers the corruption already have a ticking clock because we, in the real world, are slowly being faced with a mountain of apathy instead of ignorance. The knowledge of oppression is out there so much that marginalized people are tired of the ignorance defence. 
As the saying goes, “privilege is the ability to ignore the oppression of others.” 
Propaganda, centralized media, and strategic cultural investment made it possible for police and the military to have a chokehold on their public perception. But that’s changing. The chokehold is starting to fade, people are starting to question their beliefs. 
The past year has shown that knowledge isn’t the issue; it’s white supremacy. People don’t want to believe that any of this is that bad. People want to believe that oppression is justified, that if people just followed the law they’d be fine. They don’t want to question themselves. And marginalized people are tired of these narratives where, suddenly, people snap out of it. Because there was so much evidence to show it was bad, but it was only when you do one of the worst crimes imaginable that you realize this is bad? It’s only when it becomes personal that things are worth looking at critically?
No. And you need to examine where you are in processing your own complicity before writing a story where you’ve swapped around the ethnicities to try and distance yourself from the problem, where in the end you made the target the oppressor.
