You ever read a book or watch a movie and relate to a character so hard that it scares the crap out of you and then proceeds to trigger a full on mental breakdown? because that was Brian Lackey from Mysterious Skin for me

#it scared the shit out of me how much I related to him #Like okay damn what traumatic shit from my childhood have I repressed #anyways I had a lil menty b over it #and then Israel decided to ramp up and go full genocide so now I’m having a mental breakdown over that #And we can pack all the unaddressed unknown childhood trauma that may or may not have happened because I can’t fucking remember anything up #and pretend none of it ever happened #and I’m gonna convince myself that I was just making shit up and being crazy for relating to this character #because there’s more horrific things to have a mental breakdown over than shit I can’t remember from my childhood #so yeah #gonna force myself to not reread that book or rewatch the movie again #Because DAMN did it make me mentally unwell #and DAMN did that scare the fuck out of me #Anyways yeah I’m done neurodivergently oversharing in the tags #Mysterious Skin #brian lackey #scott heim #gregg araki #Personal

does anyone else remember the H.I.V.E books or am i alone on this one? I fucking loved those books as a kid- hell i would cheerfully reread now if i could get my hands on them. And i’m sure their writing quality has decreased drastically with the expense of me being wiser (even as a kid i could point out the stereotyping with the side characters) but also they were sooooo much fun. Kid is kidnapped so he can attend villain school, tries to hatch a plan to escape only to realize that he actually kinda likes villain school? And he can’t abandon his new best friend either who has now decided he wants to stay.

but also the books kept really increasing the stakes in a meaningful and compelling way? there were so many threads started in early books that got their due payoffs later on it was so fucking well done. Otto being a clone of Number 1 and learning that he’s essentially an ai only made to exist as a host for the body’s “owner?” Then getting fucking mind controlled by,, whatever the fuck that virus was i don’t remember much that book made me sad bc otto was an antagonist, but then at the end he recounts what his experience was like and its still so haunting to me. Also wing’s quest to find out what happened to his mother and his evolution to being Raven’s top and only student. shelby and laura also had some really cool stuff going on even if they weren’t the main focus.

My brain, an hour and a half later: 'Now let's go back and talk further about George Kirrin...'

#Does everyone go through the *sits bolt upright in bed after a sudden realisation about George* experience #I haven't even read those books since I was a kid #I do NOT have the time to reread them nor the copious number of essays that I am sure have been written about George #But my takeaway is from- what I remember-#George was not your regular 'tomboy' in fiction; like whatever was going on there #I don't think George can be held up as the archetype of literary tomboys #There were extra layers on top of the traditional 'tomboy' depiction #Like I'm pretty sure I remember George getting more annoyed that people didn't mistake her for a boy #Than being shut out from things because she was a girl #I may be misremembering but every other tomboy character I remember wanted to be mistaken for a boy #so she would be allowed to do the fun adventure things that boys got to do #Whereas George seemed as interested in doing the fun adventure things BECAUSE that was what boys did #Also I'm pretty sure there was one scene where she's annoyed with another female character #Not because they're doing 'silly' girly things but because they're better at passing for a boy than she is #Anyway it's just that even with the most tomboy literary characters I don't remember any of them ever being explicitly described #as wanting - not to be treated as a boy- but to BE a boy full stop #However I have not read these books in about eighteen years now so I may be waaaay off #And it's a bit annoying I don't have time to go back and reread #Especially because otherwise the Famous Five books are perhaps PEAK 1950s British middle class stereotyping #And also explains some parts of my childhood- I didn't entirely identify with George but she was definitely a revelation #Also because the other literary tomboys were like Cool and Tough and managed to conform to an ideal of femininity and masculinity at once #But George CRIED #As an overly emotional child who felt- and still feels- that crying often invalidates my argument or identity #That's kind of interesting #George could be a little messy! But she was a child and it still wasn't fair to put her back in a box because of it!#She's an Imperfect Tomboy and as a kid reading it she could be a disappointment but rereading as an adult I think it would seem more real #ANYWAY that's enough of that for tonight #(Also on the literary tomboy front- surely more could be written about Bill from Malory Towers but that's for another time)

sorry about being inactive for the past few days + still not answering the asks I received a month ago. unfortunately I will continue to be inactive </3

#I have.... well #im currently 8 books into rereading a beloved series from my childhood #that is 20 books long 😐#and I fear im too far in to stop now #I haven't been recording them as part of my yearly reading goal... maybe I should be at this point 😭#I don't now how this happened (that's a lie I know exactly how this happened)#I found out they made a movie adaptation & of course I had to watch it #and THEY MASSACRED THEM #ok it was mostly faithful. but they definitely massacred Lucas #why was he NICE??? and know who his dad is from the beginning??????#also they had Jacinta riding a horse + her character was written weird 🧍🏻‍♀️ and Seb was barely in it #anyway next thing I knew I was rereading the books at lightning speed in order to fully remember just how much the movie did them dirty #there's a second movie too but I can't find it anywhere 😔#probably due to the fact nobody outside Australia knows this series exists rip #I am an adult I should not be reading children's books 💀💀#thats my life update anyway <3 #bella talks

I've mentioned in Solita's bio that sometimes if the souls she has in her go haywire it can lash back against her and basically destroy her from the inside out?

Could mean theres a possibility that smth like that happens when she uses magic. Could be the reason she's avoidant not just of things that are magic, but also trying to do it herself at this point. She has too much and not enough to control it.

i know that’s it’s because people who write gay fanfiction are like. atheists who don’t believe in heaven or afterlife. but i think the reason all post finale resurrection merlin fanfiction sucks is because everybody always freezes arthur in time. and i have beef with that.

there is something lost with getting rid of the wheelchairs and the sunglasses, it adds another element to both the characters and the story that’s lost in the tv show

I don't think I can ever describe it decently enough but finding a kindred spirit (of sorts) between two authors' voices (especially when they are so distinct from one another and unique to themselves) is so magical.

#this is about me thinking i found a mirror of elizabeth strout’s pen around lucy barton and tezer özlü’s ‘cold nights of childhood’#even though they are so so different from one another #if i didn’t know that cold nights of childhood was only translated to english for the first time last year #i would swear that strout had read it #which makes it even more insane!#art!!!#it materializes in such similar but distinct ways from such different individuals with such different lives and experiences!#i wish i was smarter so i could talk about it in a way that made sense #aaarrghhh it’s makes me want to chew on drywall!#i've only ever read this one novel by özlü and it has kind of fucked me up while comforting me at the same time #and strout also fucked me up while comforting me in a completely different manner!#idk it might just be because i read them back to back that my brain is trying real hard to want to find a thread that connects them lol #i do think i have to read “cold nights of childhood” a couple times more to truly grasp and digest it #that book is about 65 pages and it punches you in the stomach in almost every page #and i don't know my thoughts around this could change after a reread but for the time being this unhinged opinion shall stay here
