Thank you for the prompt! Written for @dadrunkwriting. I went for some Felassan-induced angst.
In this corner of the Fade autumn leaves fall in perpetuity. A perennial state of decay, they drop from the branches and leave the forest floor awash in a carpet of orange. The knots and hollows of the trees seem to watch Solas as he walks in their presence, vacant eyes following him towards the clearing.
He never meant to come here again, but the smoke sent signals above the forest line, calling to him.
The fire burns eternal in the deepest woods. At its heart the herbs kept the memory of the summer they were harvested in, rich and warm, calling him to a fireside he may have once shared with a friend.
Tonight he sits alone, folding his legs beneath him. The last traces of Felassan linger where he fell, threaded with vain hope for a girl armed with naught but a roadmap of a ruined empire.
In the days after, he asked himself why. Why had he done it? No answer revealed itself. Agents that might have been safe within the folds of the Crossroads went missing on human roads, falling victim to bandits, Templar, and lesser beasts. Their blood watered the soil of his grave, and for what?
His answer came a year later. It came in the voice of strangers calling his name as though welcoming him home. He found it between the pages of a book of dwarven poetry, or dangling in the threads of a Dalish string game. For as often as it inspired laughter, it inspired tears. They sprung from his eyes in moments of solitude, and did not dry until he feared he would drown in their tide.
And yet from one answer begets another question.
“Did it hurt,” he asks the flames, “when you realised?”
It burns brighter, as though his question were kindling cast into the fire’s heart.
Felassan’s final arrow had found its mark. Its tip had speared him, barbed head snared in his ribs. Remove it, and he risks everything he had ever believed about himself. He had no choice but to break away the shaft, and let the wound heal around it.
“Did you know that I would learn this lesson, too?”
His friend does not answer, of course. The forest is silent, the dead leaves lay still.

idle worship by paramore makes me think of mirela (my canon inquisitor) like oUGHHH
she vehemently rejects the herald title, she's dalish she doesnt believe in the maker and she doesnt care about what the people believe or want to believe. she wasnt sent by the maker she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
she knows that no matter what she'll be heavily scrutinized by virtue of being an elf and so publicly rejecting the idea of being helped by andraste despite her advisors advice. all blame will fall to her even if she has support.
everyone believes she was sent by andraste but the well-intentioned and critics alike wonder why a dalish elf would be sent by andraste. this infuriates her because she never claimed to be sent by andraste and yet even her close circle have been pushing their beliefs onto her. she never had high expectations of the world but by the end she just doesnt care. these people never really respected her, she was challenged at every chance, her identity disrespected and ignored. she doesn't want to see the world burn but not because she's fond of it, there just has to be a better way. after everything she's lost, everything Her People have lost... they deserve retribution

i am thinking… about how a high approval lavellan really easily ends up relating to solas the way briala related to felassan. and how i actually like this much more than the romance route because it’s just as interesting and possibly even sadder.
lavellan doesn’t HAVE to see him this way, but they're given room to decide that solas is their mentor in an environment where they’ve otherwise been completely cut off from their culture-group. you have the opportunity to ask him for advice on just about anything, and the transmission of knowledge/history forms the bedrock of any positive relationship between himself and the player character. the dalish have limited written records, so most lore is passed down orally from keepers and hahrens to younger members of a clan. when solas starts rambling about the fade, it’s not just some guy telling stories, but an older elf sharing knowledge with his protege that would otherwise be lost with his death. he is fulfilling the responsibilities of a hahren in the same way felassan fulfilled them for briala, and he’s doing so while secretly the most literal hahren you could find. solas can occupy the role of an elder, but he is also among the oldest elves in the setting: not only a hahren, but the most hahren.
and in being granted the honor of a position as their elder, solas must confront the fact that lavellan is his legacy. they are the product of the world he’s created, the mortal race that owes its existence entirely to the catastrophic changes he made that he’s since come to regret. they purposefully incorporate him into their cultural lineage, and by doing that, they compel him to acknowledge the ties that bind him to present-day elves. he’s meeting his descendants in the post-apocalypse, and he’s grappling with the reality that for as bad as the world might be, it remains populated by people who recognize themselves in him.
for felassan, briala was the catalyst for an identical realization, and he was willing to die at solas’ hands to affirm her personhood (and, by extension, everyone else's). solas finds himself in precisely the same situation, except he’s been murdering his dearest friends to deny this possibility since before the story began. when he meets felassan’s own version of lavellan, when he actually encounters briala herself, he describes her in glowing terms because he realizes how closely they resemble each other. maybe this is why felassan bonded with her so strongly. the person she reminded him of could easily be solas.
i don't agree with the (prevailing?) interpretation that solas tries to separate himself from present-day elvendom because he doesn’t see other elves as people. i think he’s doing it because he wants to escape the truth that destroying the world means destroying his heirs, people who are as much like him as they could be while still surviving the terrible world he bequeathed to them. if you help elves, choose dialogues that reference elven lore, or even just point out to people that you are an elf, solas throws approval at you, but if you tell him directly that you are both elves and therefore similar, he gets scared. he knows lavellan is his people, but doesn't want to internalize that because that would turn him into a second felassan - and make his murder of the actual felassan completely meaningless.
the solas romance is about this immortal promethean god-figure recognizing an equal in the present and falling in love, but i personally like this version of the story more because it places greater emphasis on the seniority and power he holds. he's one of very few lines of defense between lavellan and a chantry that has a long, storied history of elf-killing. he has access to complete, firsthand accounts of their history, and can permit or deny them that knowledge at will. they're granting him their trust and their admiration, and it's on him to decide if he's worthy of it. they are his symbolic child, and he is the only person with the capacity to prevent them from becoming a sort of isaac to his abraham.
but instead, in true deadbeat fashion, he skips town, changes his number, and stops responding to your emails. and that’s why the new game is called dragon age dad

Do you think there are parallels between a Lavellan who befriends and looks up to Solas with Briala who looked up to Felassan? I feel like, romance aside, Solas does serve as a sort of mentor to Lavellan. I also feel like it's kind of ironic given Solas' disagreement with Felassan feeling compassion for modern day elves.
I think you could certainly play their relationship with that kind of parallel, yes.
Also since we're talking about Briala and Solas, I think it's really funny that Solas ends up speaking of his support for her rebellion (albeit while still separating himself from modern elves in a pretty snooty way) when Felassan's last words were that Briala reminded him of Solas.

🖊️ New Things I Tried 🖊️
Started off the year strong with posting alien smut for the first time in Haunted by One Another! Inquisitor/Nizana have been an OTP of mine within different Star Wars RP groups for a hot minute (like, literal years a hot minute) so it was about time I actually got to writing about them and their dynamic.
And of course I started with smut because I’m a simple being at the end of the day, but also because they have a very base relationship that starts out as just Enemies With ‘Bennies. They’re kinda sorta real toxic, but I like to think even their smut speaks a lot for their dynamic and I had a lot of fun writing it. 💖
🖊️ Fic I Spent the Most Time On 🖊️
Its Dueteragony.
You know its Dueteragony, I know its Dueteragony, we can all go home now.
But, seriously, everyone here knows Dueteragony is my baby, and even though I didn’t get to work on it this year as much as I did last year, I think the overall quality of the writing was significantly higher. I may not have put out as much but I really think I’ve grown as a writer and I’m really happy about that. I’m still learning a lot and that’s really exciting!
🖊️ Favorite Thing I Wrote 🖊️
Its a pretty short piece, but Within you lies the Best of Us is definitely up there. There were moments in basically everything I wrote that made me super happy this year, but being able to gleefully wait for your friend to realize that your friend has received a gift fic HITS DIFFERENT.

🖊️ Writing Goals for Next Year 🖊️
ALRIGHTY, SO...
• Get Dueteragony mostly finished (I really want a good chunk of that bad boy done prior to Dreadwolf, if all of it. Though, I do accept that parts of the last fifth of the story may have to be tweaked depending on the events of Dreadwolf. I HAVE PLANS, I HAVE CHARTS, I HAVE SO MANY SPREADSHEETS.)
• Write a sequel to Haunted by One Another. I really want to post more of the Inquisitor and Nizana’s relationship, how they went from Enemies to Lovers, and also just... write more fun smut between those two losers. I’m currently working on a direct sequel, but I also want to do a prequel, and maybe some oneshots. I’ll most likely end up making a little series grouping for them and shove them all in there for ease of organization rigiuerbgierb
• Actually start that ding dang What If fic I was going to do of Felassan and Mellan that I promised @because-im-hap-hap and @rosella-writes I was going to do.
• Actually finish the draft and post the WandaVision AU fic of Solas and Mellan that I promised basically everyone I know that I would do--
• Finish the Solas in heat smut that I also promised I’d finish I’m so sorry everyone my goals should just be “finish your pile of WIPs you savage...”
This was a ton of fun and a really interesting way to look at all the things I’ve done this year. ^_^ It’ll really be fun to see what next year brings as well!! :D

Hinterlands: The Unknown Ruin [Mihris]
When we approach a collapsed ruin, which will be called “dungeon” alone, we find Mihris. She is an important character in The Masked Empire and related to Michael [another char we see in Empise du Lion]. Her clan was killed by Imshael when Michael tried to destroy the demon for good. Looking for vengeance against Michael, Mihris allowed Imshael to posses her, and only another ancient elf in the series [Felassan] convinced Imshael to leave her by promising him that something “big was coming”, hinting Solas’ plan, and that promising level of disaster convinced Imshael to let her go.

Now, Mihris roams this place because she wants to join another clan and help with the breach.
The place can only be accessed by a mage. The front of this place doesn’t say much. It’s a wall of typical stone, very usual of any fereldan fortress. One would suspect it was built by Fereldans. However there are Avvar pillars and arcs at the entrance of this place.
Once inside, we see a corridor with flags that we immediately assume to display Grey Warden iconography. As it usually happens in most cases in DA series, I assumed this place was built first for some fereldan-based group [the building itself is ferelden, not elven] and then, later, taken by Grey Wardens. Once the Grey Wardens abandoned it, it was retaken by the Avvar. However, in detail, the banners show some discrepancies with the usual Grey Warden symbols. Maybe the first two can be related to them
This one is undeniable: it’s the typical one-griffon symbol of the Grey Warden.
This one, however, does not belong to the typical heraldry of the Grey Warden. I even checked the books of World of Thedas and Art of Inquisition, and the grey warden section does not show similar icon. Where we can see this symbol is in a pre-blight doors made by Tevinter.
This also brings to my attention that the Hall of Silence, in the Still Ruin, is flanked by griffon statues [assuming they are always Grey Warden iconography], which makes no sense in terms of timeline: this ruin was sealed before the blights and only now in Inquisition we are exploring it. There was no way for the Wardens to use it as part of the fortifications against the darkspawn [we saw it untouched and frost in time]. If they would have done so, the whole ruin should be displaying more Grey Warden symbols, not just one in a very particular hall.
As we can see these griffons are the typical Grey Warden statues we find around. They include the joining goblet... so, my main conclusion is that maybe the symbol of the Grey Wardens has a potential relationship with Tevinter. I questioned several times why the Grey Warden have a symbol of a sunburst in their iconography when they are an Order independent of the Chantry, and even older than it. Maybe the answer is related to Tevinter [in what way or how, I cannot say. There is not much to speculate with.]
A combination of both symbols can be also seen in the concept art of Tevinter doors, which shows a more obvious design of the Grey Warden. This is so curious to me.
The third banner is the most mysterious one that I called “Strange wolf-halla-like banner”; I couldn’t find any similar to it in the series of DA.
Looks like a wolf, but it’s not even close to the Fen’Harel banner we have in DAO game files. And its pointy style makes us suspect of Tevinter origin. The only symbols I could relate this with was the symbol on the elven funerary lid:

It’s more geometrical, and follows the style of the vallaslins we see in the paintings of the Hallas in Nation Art: Elvhen. It’s a design that can be done entirely with just one stroke. Both this drawing and the banner above share a similar structure in different styles. I wonder what this means.
Updated 2023: Recently I realised that the top of this figure is the undeniable symbol of the helm that Tevinter mages use, so maybe this symbols is more related to Tevinter, and like all what it comes to it, previously taken from the Elvhen.
Continuing on, at the end of the main corridor where the banners hang, we find this unique statue that I have only seen in the Fade, in a region where one can assume it’s a representation of sacrifice. The sacrificed lamb. It could also mean “A sacrifice with horns and humanoid body”, relating Gatsy’s Sacrifice murals to this: in that mural we see magisters sacrificing qunari.
This statue is mounted on a device that looks like a capstan, usually seen being used by slaves in the trope wheel of pain, or more typically, to open and close gates that requires a lot of strength. This is the same exact statue we see in the Fade [we can see the “cute” slaves drawings below]
Solas presents us the Veilfire for the first time here, telling us it’s present where the Veil is thin.
As we enter in this chamber, neither the walls nor the arcs or columns of the building give us a hint of who could have built it. It looks very ferelden, since it lacks of the usual elven or dwarven patterns we see in the constructions of those groups. At the sides of the main chamber we see the statue of Masferath, flanked by mabaris, that, due to the position of their heads, seem to be guarding him.
On the other side, we find this mysterious Faceless figure holding a crown [representation of the Maker] and two mabaris in the same position.
The columns and the corners of this chamber usually have this unique, strange statue that, if anything, reminds me of a Skull bud with sword. Because the shape of its background, similar to those big Tevinter diapason devices, I tend to suspect this statue as Tevinter, but I don’t feel very confident on that guessing, so I catalogue it as without identity so far.
On the floor we find one of the typical glyphs of magic. This is nothing special. This symbol in particular is what we see when mages cast spells, more details in General glyphs and magical symbols.
On a collapsed corner we find another Skull bud with sword and the Beheaded ram-man statue. On it, there is a rune which triggers the codex The Lost Art of Veilfire. It’s a book banned by the Chantry, and claims that any mage can control Veilfire, but it’s hardly of the same quality than the elves.
The presence of Veilfire in this place adds nothing of information: the place can be tevinter or avvar, since both group, beside the elves, also knew how to do veilfire.
At the end of the chamber, we see an Avvar altar. The main statue used to craft it is seen only three times in game [in the fade, in the Stone-bear hold, and in the Hissing Wastes]. In this case, it’s clipped with a skull, in front of an urn. It is resting on top of a statue we have seen a lot in the Hinterlands: the Eroded dragon skull.
At the sides, there are two statues that we only find in the Fade: they have deepstalker’s mouths and are screaming. In the Fade they are associated with a codex about burning the fears, so it belongs to the Avvar series of Keepers of Fear.
What’s interesting of this statue, is that it’s a central piece of decoration in the Lair of Fear, in the Fade. There, we see fours of these vomiting blood. On its base, there is another drawing, which I can only see as another screaming figure, rising their arms in terror.
At the base of this worshipping place there is an elven artefact.
It’s hard to point out what the hell this place is: It was weird banners, some look like Grey Warden’s but inside the chamber there is nothing related to the Wardens. It has Andrastian and Avvar iconography and a couple of statues which origin is unknown such as the Skull bud with sword. I guess with low confidence that the Skull bud with sword may be Tevinter, but it’s a statue that never had a codex related to it in game, nor appears in the World of Thedas or Art of Inquisition. That statue and everything in this place is such a mystery.

11. What work took you the longest to write?
Of my published fics, probably The Ascent. Because I Asked may be the longest non-long fic, I started it around the same time as The Ascent last year so they're both sort of the same age even tho I only started publishing the former in October.

Dadwolf Player Origins Predictions
I'm not aiming to be right in any of these predictions, but the multiple (playable!!!) origins were such a charm point for Origins. It was left out of DA2 and barely squeezed in for Inquisition, so here's hoping
Cut for length
Altus: Human / Mage
Since we're going somewhere the mages aren't universally oppressed, we ought to see it from the highest social perspective available.
Soporati: Human / Warrior + Rogue
A human commoner at last! My primary choice for a non-mage human to contrast with the Altus mage.
Orlesian Noble: Human / Warrior + Rogue
Also contrasts with an Altus Origin but in a slightly different way. Plus, it brings in a PC from the previous game's setting as has been tradition for the previous games.
Avvar: Human / Any Class
Another fun potential human background from the south that we haven't had a chance to play yet. They have such a fun perspective to bring into events. This is the one i personally want most, and they could actually have enough rp appeal to make me actually play a human of my own will (sorry Hawke).
Dalish: Elf / Any Class
Of course, as the Dalish are primarily nomadic, it also wouldn't be too hard to bring in a new clan from the south. It could be especially interesting to see someone from a clan that spends a large amount of their time in the Dales. I never read The Masked Empire, but I've heard there was at the time a large clan near Halamshiral. Especially being so near Felassan, that would bring an extra level to their already-tense relationship with Solas and the Fen'Harel plot.
City Elf: Elf / Any Class
In keeping with how each game's PC comes from the previous game's setting, they could be one of/a child of one of the elves abducted during Unrest in the Alienage during Origins. Valora could be present in their origin. Are we ever going to acknowledge Valora again, BioWare?
Kal-Sharok Dwarf: Dwarf / Warrior + Rogue
We should be a lot nearer Kal-Sharok, and i want to know what their deal is exactly. They sounds exciting. Surfacer dwarves would also be cool and could actually be from the south, but we just did that.
Warrior Caste: Dwarf / Warrior + Rogue
Alternatively.
We've already done the highest and lowest of Orzammar society. Let's see what's up the the middle dude now and also exile them while we're here. Gotta move the plot along somehow.
Tal-Vashoth: Qunari / Any Class
Conflicts with the Qunari (political and religious group) are ramping back up. I don't think they'd take away the option to play a Qunari (racial group) after granting it in Inquisition no matter what happened in DA2 character creation, and i think it's going to be much more feasible to squeeze them in if they're Tal-Vashoth.
Warden: Human + Elf + Dwarf / Any Class
Would be more of a Warden-Recruit than a full Warden, but maybe the playable origin finishes with your Joining. We should already have a Warden companion (Davrin), but this would give the player a personal investment in whatever's going on in Weisshaupt. Not a likely option since Wardens are supposed to be so much more competent than the average fighter, but a fun possibility.

carefully, like a gentle rain on dry earth , you've been left beaten down and by someone you really trusted and loved, so now love doesn't come easy for you. you want it to. you want to love and be loved, but you're not sure you remember how. so you need someone else to take the lead. they have to be gentle and sweet and patient. they have to watch out for you, and make sure youre doing okay, because most days you feel a little fragile, if not totally shattered. but someone will come along who will put those pieces back together again.
