A Song of Ice and Fire // Audition
A Song of Fire and Ice Audition Please fill out correctly
Name: Luna
Username: @/queen-rhaenyra
OC Name: Shiera Velaryon
Age: about 19 (b. 281 AC, present ASOIAF time being 300 AC)
Faceclaim (NO faceclaims from the show): Noémie Schmidt
Position (ie Noble, Faceless Men, Dothraki, Night Watch ect): Noble
House (ONE OC per cannon House only-OC Houses accepted but do not double up on names): House Velaryon (canon)
If you have a house, what if your crest?: a silver seahorse on a field of sea-green
If you have a house, what is your motto? according to semi-canon, "The Old, the True, the Brave" (not specified in the books written by GRRM, but mentioned in extended material, remain susceptible to changes by him.)
Sexuality: probably pan, she's highborn, so she does indeed marry a male, but eh, to quote Oberyn Martell, why deny yourself half the pleasures of the world?
Personality:
Likes: + Cyvasse + Westerosi, Valyrian, and Ghiscari History and Lore + Symeon, her pet Little Valyrian, a species of Lemur with silver-white fur and purple eyes found in the Forest of Qohor. + The North, it's peoples (well, most) and culture
Dislikes: - Pompous and self-important men (eg, Victarion Greyjoy, Ser Janos Slynt, Joffrey "Baratheon", and about 80% of the population of the known world) - The Sea - Overzealous preachers of the Faith of the Seven (later expanded to the resurrected Faith Militant) - Essos (she would say it's the sand, but she does love Starfall in Dorne, so, it's not really the sand.)
Family: (just gonna list them here, they're kind of expanded on in the bio section) ++ Lord Monford Velaryon (father) ++ Lady Saera of Volantis (mother) ++ Lothor Driftwaters (maternal half-brother and sworn sword) ++ Lord Monterys Velaryon (paternal half-brother) ++ Lady Velaryon (unknown first name, step-mother) ++++ (distant relation of House Targaryen, no, for real, Houses Velaryon and Targaryen are both from Valyria, and their union dates back to before the conquerors. Visenya, Aegon, and Rhaenys Targaryen were the children of Aerion Targaryen and Valaena Velaryon, and continued to inter-marry in the three centuries that followed)
Bio: Shiera is the eldest born child of Lord Monford Velaryon (now deceased). She was born 281 AC, known as the Year of the False King, the year Prince Rhaegar Targaryen crowned Lyanna Stark the Queen of Love and Beauty and eventually sparked Robert's Rebellion. Like the rest of the Kingdom, House Velaryon bent the knee when Robert Baratheon took the throne, though Monford kept Shiera from court, feeling she looked too much like a Targaryen, whom Robert despised and may have attempted to kill her.
Following Stannis Baratheon's declaration and call to arms, Shiera was sent across the narrowsea, with her brother Lothor amongst her protectors, to remain with her mother's family as war raged in Westeros. Her youngest brother, Monterys, was kept at Driftmark as her father's heir. Once in Essos, and hearing stories of the Mother of Dragons, Breaker of Chains, etc, etc, Shiera eventually convinced her brother to set out with her beyond the black walls and find the dragon queen, which they eventually did and Shiera switched her personal allegiance from Stannis Baratheon to her (distant) cousin, Daenerys Stormborn Targaryen. She tries to explain to her Queen the various laws and ways of Westeros, succeeding in explaining the difference between a Lannister and a Stark (where Ser Barriston had failed), as well as the histories and claims of the people there that predate their arrival. This occasionally lands her in arguments with the young Queen, but Shiera comes to believe Dany is the Conqueror reborn or the Prince that was promised, and that she will reconqueror westeros regardless.
Extra: + Like her ancestors, she has the valyrian traits of silver-gold hair and purple eyes, however, she also has heterochromia, simply known as mismatched eyes in Westeros, her right eye is sea-green, whilst her left is the traditional valyrian violet. + She also inherited traits custom of dragonriders, ie, resistance to heat and flames + she is multi-lingual, fluent in the many bastardized forms of Valyrian spoken throughout Essos, as well as traditional High Valyrian. She knows a few words in Dothraki, but did not really bother to learn it.
Did you read the rules?: yes, and I may be in a bit of danger of bending number 7 a tiny bit, when I be dickish and point out that it's Ice and Fire, not Fire and Ice. I'm sorry to be rude, but as a trashy fan, my obsessiveness compels me to point it out. And also, as a theory, I think there's a reason for that, since the series is titled after the prophecy of the prince that was promised, whose contents we do not completely as GRRM has yet to reveal it. Also, really pushing my luck, but, House Baratheon is not extinct. In the books, Stannis and Shireen Baratheon are both alive, and as Stannis prepares for war, he has instructed his army that should he die in their upcoming invasion, they are to continue to march to the Iron Throne and place his daughter on the throne, as she is his only heir. (Yes, I know she died in the show, but it's become poorly written fanfiction, so fck it, the show. It's infuriating.) Also, House Nymeros Martell, more commonly known as House Martell is also not extinct, I dunno what bs the show did to them, but they are alive and kicking, and MAJOR game players in the books. And House Bolton is also around too, again, I don't mean to be a dick, just pointing out stuff that is not canon within the books. And again, really sorry to be a tosser, but rule 11 says to follows the books/show best we can, and the books are the primary source, and the central canon, the shows are their own little spun-off reality/bad-fanfiction now. again, sorry.

Grim History
The Medical Art of Bloodletting
Bloodletting as a medical practice was probably introduced in Ancient Greece. The first written account of it was by the famed physician Hippocrates in the 5th century BC. The ancients believed in the body’s humors (blood, phlegm, black bile, yellow bile) which corresponded to the elements of earth, air, fire, and water, which for them represented the four most primal building blocks of all matter.  Long before the existence of cells, atoms, bacteria, or DNA was known, medical diagnoses were, at best, shots in the dark. For physicians in the ancient world, disease resulted from an imbalance in these four humors, This could clearly be seen when females menstruated; ridding the body of excess blood automatically restored a woman to good health. And so they concluded that forcing a patient to vomit, urinate, defecate, or bleed was a sure-fire cure all for all illnesses.
As the Greek Empire declined and the Muslim empire expanded, the Arabs preserved Greek medical texts and translated them into Arabic. As the Muslim empire spread across North Africa and into southern Europe, they brought these texts along. Then when the Christians started to successfully fight back and reconqueror their own lands, they took possession of these books, translated them into Latin and the use of bloodletting as a medical technique exploded during the Middle Ages where it continued to be the primary source of treatment until the end of the 18th century.
The most common method of bloodletting was known as “phlebotomy” or “venesection” which simply consisted of drawing out quantities of blood with a syringe, usually from a large vein or artery. Another method was called “scarification” which used a specialized set of tools to puncture the patient’s skin. A simple syringe could be utilized as well as a device with sawtoothed blades that rotated by turning a handle attached to gears. Heated vacuum cups were attached to the scars to draw out the blood which was then collected in cups. One other method of bloodletting was through the use of leeches attached to the sick person’s body. The bloodletting treatment concluded when the patient lost so much blood that they fainted.
During the 18th century, the science of diagnosis took off dramatically and by the end of the century bloodletting was thought to be of no medical value whatsoever. While its use declined, some physicians continued to use it as treatment. One reason given for this was that traditional medicine was believed to be superior to modern scientific methods. The other major problem being that, while the science of diagnosis became more fine-tuned, the science of medical cures for ailments lagged far behind. Therefore, some doctors, even though they knew bloodletting had no beneficial effects, continued to use it because any treatment was thought to be better than no treatment. By the mid-nineteenth century, statistical studies on bloodletting in pneumonia patients showed it to have no effect other than some possible placebo effects. The practice died out except in some rare cases of frauds, folk medicine practitioners, snake oil salesmen, and so-called “alternative medicine”.
