On conflict theory
Basically, the first serious attempt at creating a scientific field of archaeology was done by 19th century Germans, and they looked around and dug some stuff up and concluded that the prehistoric world looked like the world of Conan the Barbarian: lots of “population replacement,” which is a euphemism for genocide and/or systematic slavery and mass rape. This 19th century German theory then became popular with some 20th century Germans who... uh... made the whole thing fall out of fashion by trying to put it into practice. After those 20th century Germans were squashed, any ideas they were even tangentially associated with them became very unfashionable, and so there was a scientific revolution in archaeology! I'm sure this was just crazy timing, and actually everybody rationally sat down and reexamined the evidence and came to the conclusion that the disgraced theory was wrong (lol, lmao). Whatever the case, the new view was that the prehistoric world was incredibly peaceful, and everybody was peacefully trading with one another, and this thing where sometimes in a geological stratum one kind of house totally disappears and is replaced by a different kind of house is just that everybody decided at once that the other kind of house was cooler. The high-water mark of this revisionist paradigm even had people saying that the Vikings were mostly peaceful traders who sailed around respecting the non-aggression principle. And then people started sequencing ancient DNA and...it turns out the bad old 19th century Germans were correct about pretty much everything. The genetic record is one of whole peoples frequently disappearing or, even more commonly, all of the men disappearing and other men carrying off the dead men's female relatives. There are some exceptions to this, but by and large the old theory wins.

On violence
“Violence is hard because humans are hard-wired for interactional entrainment and solidarity and this propensity is stronger than mobilized aggression. Thus most people stick at bluster and bluff. To be violent, most people have to overcome fear and tension, and this happens either in ritualized encounters in which status concerns are primary, as in duels, or in unusual situations when people are sucked into a tunnel of violence, when normal perceptions are distorted, pulse rates accelerate as cortisol and adrenaline flood the body, and there is forward momentum down, forward panic, found especially in micro-conflicts in which bullies attack the weak without mercy, but found also in wars, when one army falters and begins to flee, emboldening the other to rush forward and engage in a killing frenzy. This forward panic leads to most of the lethality in war.”

American Fusion (2005)
Tumblr media
Movie #1,041 • WELL, HONG? CH. 3
Tumblr media
Welcome to WELL, HONG? my A-Z filmography series focusing on the complete works of actor JAMES HONG...
[ Ed. Note: This is the first WELL, HONG? installment on CC666 - for the first two chapters, visit moviejeff.com: Adventures of Johnny Tao (2007) and Airplane! (1980) ]
Well, there it is in all its wackadoodle glory: Hong's only scene in this hard to find '05 comedy (I had to rent it on Amazon for $4.25 lol). In and out (and stoned out of his mind) in under 90 seconds. American Fusion had to crawl so that Crazy Rich Asians could walk? No can't print that…
Moving on.
I actually was mildly into this one for the first act or so. The humor was pretty broad and weird (as you can see from the above "sea otter nipples" riff + look at that movie poster!). But it descended into sappy schlock unfortunately.
Some highlights include:
An early Randall Park appearance as the son of the lead actress who wishes he was black (he's legit funny doing AAVE)
All the family's interactions with the black doctor (played by character actor de jour Tom Wright), especially when they bring him gifts which include a basketball and Popeye's chicken. (The commentary is obvious but effective: minorities stereotype other minorities just as often)
Fabio cameo
Weirdly, character actor Joel McKinnon Miller had a fairly significant scene as a plumber but he is not listed anywhere in the IMDB cast? Hmm.
And the great Pat Morita, who looks like this for some reason…
Tumblr media
It was competent and fairly funny for a little bit... I swear! Oh well.
SCORE: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️¼

Quick Randall doodle cause' i was testing out brushes!! I like to think his wings came from literally right after he fell. Idk if there's any like. Plothole to that idea but I think it'd be neat if it was the mask trying to protect itself and giving Randall wings so he would land the fall or even soften it just a little bit.

Landcon Day 2 Paris 14 April 2024 Liveblog (part 1)
Tumblr media
The day begins with a show at Land Con 6
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The (very nice) show presented at Land Con 6 has ended, it's almost time to meet the cast of Outlander in panels.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cast of Outlander arrived on stage for a group panel!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How do they feel about the end of the series? Sophie Skelton says there will be sadness as they are a family and will no longer be able to see each other every day. However, she adds that they're also excited to leave their characters in good shape at the end of the series (or at least some of them).
Lauren Lyle says Land Con is her favorite convention, she's really grateful for the fans, and she's really happy to be back.
Tumblr media
Richard Rankin & Sophie Skelton come together for a panel
Tumblr media
What do they not like about each other's character? Sophie says that she doesn't like that Roger doesn't know what he wants to do in life, it also makes her a little sad for him. For his part, Richard says that what he doesn't like about Brianna is that she invents the matches and that it ends up burning down her parents' house.
What did Outlander bring to their lives? Sophie Skelton says she learned a lot from the character of Brianna and that the cast of Outlander also became a second family to her. Richard Rankin, for his part, highlights the fact that thanks to this experience, he has the possibility of choosing the projects on which he wants to work (or not) in his free time.
Tumblr media
Sophie Skelton tells an anecdote about filming that also happened to her in real life. While filming a scene in which there was a close-up of her hands and Brianna's ring, she realized that she had lost that ring. They then looked all over the set for it before Sophie realized that it had slipped in her pants and gotten stuck in one of her socks after going to the bathroom and getting dressed .
A similar story played out in real life. While visiting a castle with Richard, she lost a ring that her mother gave her and that she holds dear. They then searched everywhere for the ring in the pouring rain before, once again, Sophie realized that the ring was stuck in one of her socks.
Richard and Sophie are asked about the scene in the caravan in which the production decided to put music by Phil Collins. Richard indicates that he did not see the scene and that he did not know that there was this music. Sophie, for her part, rewatched season 7 before filming season 8 and admits that this music reminds her of an ad in which there is a gorilla. So she jokingly said that she was looking for a gorilla in the scene and Richard jokingly said to her something like: “Didn’t you see me?” ".
They laugh among themselves saying that it would be funny if, in season 8, Brianna used the nickname "my gorilla" towards Roger.
Tumblr media
This is the start of Romann Berrux's panel
Romann returns to the scene in which Fergus gets his hand cut and explains the process used to achieve this scene. He indicates that he was in London for a whole day so that the team could make a reproduction of his arm. He had to spend 8 hours without moving with his arm in a mold. After that, the production had a perfect reproduction of his arm.
During filming, his arm was stuck in his costume and the fake arm was used throughout the scene. He adds that the fake arm was equipped with small cables filled with blood and that the technical team had a remote control to allow the blood to spurt out when Fergus had his hand cut.
Tumblr media
Romann is asked about the scene between Fergus and Randall in Madame Elise's brothel. He thinks the scene was as hard for him to shoot as it was for Tobias Menzies, who is one of the cushiest people he knows.
He admits that there was a lot of preparation beforehand, in particular to get those around him to accept this scene, to make them understand what this scene represented but also to define what he agreed to do or not. He adds that between takes, Tobias didn't dare look him in the eyes, probably to stay in character.
Tumblr media
Romann knew in advance that his adventure in Outlander would come to an end. At the time, he was a little sad about giving away his character. It was especially afterward that he was sad to have had to abandon a character that he cherished so much, loved to play and for which he was given a lot of freedom.
Joey Phillips and Izzy Meikle-Small take the stage for a new panel
Tumblr media
Joey Phillips really likes the scenes in which he has to operate, they are very realistic scenes. He remembers the scene where they meet William's character who has a pus-filled abscess, it seemed so real. Izzy asks Joey not to remind her of this scene because she really doesn't like pus.
Like yesterday, Izzy says it was difficult for her to find common ground with Rachel who is extremely religious. However, she adds that this character taught her a lot of things.
Tumblr media
Joey admits he didn't know much about the Quakers before starring on the show. He did a lot of research on the subject and found their faith very interesting. He adds that a difficult aspect of his role was finding the right balance between the fact that his character is really down to earth and that he wanted him to be a warm person.
Did they cry while watching Outlander? Like yesterday, Joey said he cried watching a scene between Caitriona Balfe and Mark Lewis Jones that took place in the first part of season 7. He was watching the scene on the plane so he laughingly said that it It was because of the altitude that he cried. Izzy admits that she too cried during the first part of season 7 when Claire returns to her room after Brianna and Roger went through the stones.
The panels continue and this time we find Duncan Lacroix and Steven Cree
Tumblr media
Was there room for improvisation in the series? Duncan Lacroix said that it was not really allowed that there was a person in charge of checking that the script was respected. If he improvised, it was because he had forgotten his lines.
Which characters would they have liked to have had more scenes with? Steven responds that he would have liked to have had more scenes with Duncan's character, Murtagh. They also would have liked to have had the chance to tour with Tobias Menzies.
Tumblr media
Steven Cree has fun regularly imitating Jamie and Claire while answering questions from fans.
Tumblr media
Charles Vandervaart is his turn on stage
Tumblr media
Charles didn't know the hype around the series before being in Outlander. He realized the extent of the fan support during the season 7 premiere. He thought it would be a small event with the cast but when he got out of the car, there were hundreds of people.

Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe star in Outlander (Image: Daily Record)
TV show like Outlander are guilty of exploiting Scotland's cultural heritage, according to a leading academic. The time-travelling drama follows the exploits of Highland warrior Jamie Fraser, played by Sam Heughan, and English nurse Claire Randall, portrayed by Caitriona Balfe.
It is widely credited with triggering a tourism boom in Scotland dubbed the 'Outlander effect'. The show, as well as the novels by Diana Gabaldon, has built up a huge cult following across the world, especially in the USA.
But Dr Stephen Collins, of the University of West of Scotland, reckons it and other productions such as James Bond movie Skyfall, are guilty of misrepresenting Scottish history and culture. And he also questioned where the money being made from TV and film was going, suggesting more should go to protecting the heritage they take advantage of.
It comes with the UK set to ratify the 2003 UNESCO convention on the protection of intangible cultural heritage. The likes of kilts, Hogmanay and peat cutting are among the Scottish traditions likely to be included.
Dr Collins welcomed the move but said legal safeguards were needed to protect the country's culture heritage from TV and film depictions, according to reports in The Scotsman. He said Scotland was often used as a backdrop but without correct attribution or financial support for the communities who created the traditions.
He said: "There are two important issues that we hope the implementation of the 2003 Convention will address: firstly, preservation and the handing down of intangible cultural heritage from one generation to the next. This issue is particularly acute in areas of Scotland where languages such as Gaelic are disappearing, meaning that the heritage could disappear with them.

James Bond returned to his childhood home in Glencoe for the film Skyfall, but the depiction of Scotland was criticised (Image: Skyfall)
"Secondly, exploitation, where intangible cultural heritage is used as the backdrop to films and TV shows without attribution or any money flowing back to the communities to support safeguarding activities. Without a framework for regulation, the worst-case scenario here is that the intangible heritage is used in such a way that allows for misrepresentation or misinterpretation because currently there is no way to challenge that use."
Countries like Ghana and Nigeria offer protection to intangible cultural heritage in copyright laws. This means fees are paid to the state or communities impacted.
Dr Collins wants to see that replicated here, adding: "If an HBO comes and makes an Outlander and there is money raised on that because it is a multi-million pound venture, where does that money flow back to? Does any of that money come back to the originating community who are the knowledge bearers of the things we are seeing on screen that could then support local education, and local preservation?
"Does the local community in any way have a right to say ‘no’, this is misrepresenting us. This is not our history, not our story?"
👉Scotland needs a legal framework to protect its living cultural heritage. The purposes of the 2003 UNESCO Convention on the protection of intangible cultural heritage are:
(a) to safeguard the intangible cultural heritage;
(b) to ensure respect for the intangible cultural heritage of the communities, groups and individuals concerned;
(c) to raise awareness at the local, national and international levels of the importance of the intangible cultural.

In the 1800s, 1 in 4 cowboys were Black in the Old West.
The Federation of Black Cowboys
They were formed in 1994 in Queens, NY by Virginia-native Ellis “Mountain Man” Harris (first photo), Brooklyn-native Kesha “Mama” Morse (photoed sitting atop the hay), North Carolina-native Arthur “J.R.” Fulmore (photoed holding the saddles) and some other Black Americans to promote the knowledge and heritage of the “Black West” in the East coast.
They teach young kids the art of western horsemanship, the skills required to properly care for a horse and aim to upkeep the tradition with their descendants, as well as stories of Black American historical figures for all such as: Bill Pickett, Nat Love, Bass Reeves, and Stagecoach Mary.
Mountain Man was inspired to form the likeminded crew after watching the first Black Rodeo in Randall’s Island, west of Harlem, in 1971. The likes of Muhammad Ali rolled through:

In 2016, with declining membership and dwindling finances, The FBC lost their long held stables and ability to host youth programs at the same capacity. The presence of Black American residents in New York, especially the 5 boroughs, drastically shifted stemming from decades prior and presently due to many being forced to uproot since then: the New Great Migration. (I always say we’re some rare breeds out here.) In spite of it all, it’s warming to know that the crew is able to continue to thrive.
As for the photoset, most of them were captured by Paul Collins and Brad Trent.
SN: And yes that’s Beyoncé with the crew.

Professor Layton - Second Chances Au
Hershel died in the Azran Sanctuary. Then he woke up in Stansbury, 19 years before their adventure had started.
The only proof of the time jump aside from his memory? Aurora’s pendant and a large almost star shaped burn across his chest.
Now Hershel has to stumble through his day to day life as a teenager and try to act normal while he figures out what to do with his foreknowledge.
Here’s some additional details about Hershel’s first day in the past:
On the night/very early morning he wakes up, he ends up telling Lucille and Roland that he remembers his older brother and the fact that he was adopted. They confirm this and even add on that they’re still in contact with him, which has Hershel feeling all kinds of betrayed (mostly because of the 30 years they’d gone without telling him any of this).
Hershel decided (against his parent’s suggestion to take a day off) that he’d go to school on the day he woke up. This goes about as well as you’d expect because dealing with multiple crises at once makes it quite difficult to act like your teenage self.
He has to stop himself from commenting on what a gentleman would do and more than once he reached to fix his hat which wasn’t there.
When him and Randall fence, he has to make a conscious effort to hold back because of how much he’s improved since he was 17. When he gets lost in though he ends up winning easily.
Randall, Angela and even Dalston notice something isn’t quite right with Hershel, but he brushes off their concern, insisting that he’s fine.
By the end of the day, Hershel is barely holding it together. When the end of school arrives, Hershel quietly slips out while Randall is mid discussion/argument with mr Collins
He pretends not to hear Dalston calling out to him as he leaves campus, same for Henry’s greeting when he walks past him in town. He doesn’t want to go home yet, so he ends up heading to the Wall of Norwell to brood
Sometime later, the whole Stansbury gang shows up to check on him, leading Hershel to remember just how close they were before everything went wrong
He doesn’t tell them about the time travel, but he does tell them about how he found out he’s adopted, he has an older brother and that Hershel wasn’t even his name (and uses his discovery of this to excuse his behaviour)
(Angela has to elbow Randall into silence when Hershel mentions his father being the archeologist to find proof of the Azran and his older brother being Desmond Sycamore)
Even though Hershel is keeping the true extent of his current crisis secret, the four of them help him through it
After that day things fall somewhat back into a normal routine, but it only get more complicated when the day Randall tells them about the mask comes along…

Community Palette Project - Update!
We're currently at 464/720 shades claimed.
Things stalled out a little as life got busy, but I'd really love to see this project to its completion. Doing so will require some help, though!
I can't name all those remaining shades by myself. If you have any Cyberpunk 2077 Vs or OCs that you haven't added to the project yet, please feel encouraged to add them, no matter how new or minor they may be in your lore. Do not feel guilty about adding a dozen or two of your most obscure Cyberpunk2077 OCs at this point; I'd love it if you did.
You can also name shades after your fave Cyberpunk 2077 NPCs and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners characters! You can find a list of the main NPCs that are still missing colors beneath the cut, but please keep in mind - if you adore a rather minor NPC, they may not be on this list, but that doesn't mean you can't use the form to name a color after them <3
For Vs, OCs, and NPCs: You can ⭐complete the form here.⭐
Please reblog this post, as outside links can interfere with posts showing properly in the tags. <3 Also, please feel free to send this link to friends, or to share it on other platforms; any visibility that will help the project is appreciated.
"Main" Cyberpunk 2077 NPCs and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Characters Up For Grabs (as of May 8th):
