On conflict theory

Basically, the first serious attempt at creating a scientific field of archaeology was done by 19th century Germans, and they looked around and dug some stuff up and concluded that the prehistoric world looked like the world of Conan the Barbarian: lots of “population replacement,” which is a euphemism for genocide and/or systematic slavery and mass rape. This 19th century German theory then became popular with some 20th century Germans who... uh... made the whole thing fall out of fashion by trying to put it into practice. After those 20th century Germans were squashed, any ideas they were even tangentially associated with them became very unfashionable, and so there was a scientific revolution in archaeology! I'm sure this was just crazy timing, and actually everybody rationally sat down and reexamined the evidence and came to the conclusion that the disgraced theory was wrong (lol, lmao). Whatever the case, the new view was that the prehistoric world was incredibly peaceful, and everybody was peacefully trading with one another, and this thing where sometimes in a geological stratum one kind of house totally disappears and is replaced by a different kind of house is just that everybody decided at once that the other kind of house was cooler. The high-water mark of this revisionist paradigm even had people saying that the Vikings were mostly peaceful traders who sailed around respecting the non-aggression principle. And then people started sequencing ancient DNA and...it turns out the bad old 19th century Germans were correct about pretty much everything. The genetic record is one of whole peoples frequently disappearing or, even more commonly, all of the men disappearing and other men carrying off the dead men's female relatives. There are some exceptions to this, but by and large the old theory wins.

Is anyone else sad that panic! is ending on such a sour note? I realize what a freaking prick Brendon has become and how the latest album sucks except for literally one song, but like this band was my life at one point in time. It’s so sad to see what panic! Has become overtime. Especially to it’s fans who were so loyal to this band And to see that it’s disbanding is kind of gut wrenching to me.

Basically, it's an expansion on the world of the film, and reframes the story a little more realistically. It's got EVERYTHING. It's got a deep study of both leads, complex political maneuvering, John Smith's Pretty People Problems (obsessed with this), gay lil Thomas having a Lot to deal with, Pocahontas being smarter than everyone, and romanceeeeeee. *muah* c'e bella.

When John Smith returns to England, Pocahontas is left as the mediator between the settlers and her people. Notes: I'm not sure where the predecessor of this fic is (although I'll continue to try). It's a rare modern AU, with a twist. You can piece together what happened before the fic, and the intensity of the universe it happens in. To keep in line with the setting, Pocahontas has a different name, which can be jarring, but once you get past it the premise is interesting and the story, compelling.

It's a wide, wide fic, and includes interpretations of a TON of Disney characters. I included this because the Pocahontas/John Smith subplot absolutely fucking wrecked me, and I needed to share. The last update the fic got threw me in the back of a van and beat me with an aluminum baseball bat. This fic is unfinished as of now, but even if it's never updated again, it's worth a read. Just be sure to read all of the author's notes!

Milestone Monday

On this day, May 20 in 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin was published in Boston by John P. Jewett. Its popularity was so great that the first edition went through many printings and sold 300,000 by the end of the year in the U.S. alone (1.5 million were sold in Britain in the first year). Jewett had presses in operation 24 hours a day to keep up with demand.

Our copy is one of the later printings for that year, the 285th thousand, and was published in one volume without the six full-page illustrations by Hammatt Billings engraved for the first printing. In late 1851, Jewett, along with partners Proctor and Worthington, formed a second publishing business in Cleveland, which took on the responsibility of selling Uncle Tom's Cabin in the west, which is reflected on the title page of our printing. Our particular printing was also issued later and bound with the 1853 A Key to Uncle Tom's Cabin.

We also hold the first illustrated edition of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, published by Jewett in 1853 with many illustrations by Billings engraved by Baker and Smith, and we show some of those illustrations here as well.
