Dean doesn’t notice until they’re running through a rakshaka case, months after. They’re in Montana and it’s well into January which means there shouldn’t be any bees around.

He ducks his head back from the buzz irritably, eyes narrowed. “Don’t these bitches hibernate?” he says hotly.

Sam is looking at him like maybe he’s insane. Dean expected him to just know about bees and their seasonal habits or whatever, like he always seems to just know things. Either way, Dean is pretty sure that bees aren’t supposed to be around in the winter.

The bee -- it’s one of the fuzzy kinds which he’s pretty sure means it doesn’t sting but still, there’s an instinctual kind of fear there -- just kind of dizzily floats near him for another moment before drifting off. Dean glares after it and Sam watches him do it and then they’re back to talking about how they’re gonna track the thing.

He doesn’t think about the bee until after they bunk up somewhere in Wyoming on the way back to the bunker. It’s an idle thought that enters his mind as he’s trying to sleep, wondering about the hibernation thing again. With sudden clarity so sharp it hurts, he thinks that Cas would have known. Cas would have known whether bees hibernate, what kind of bee that one was, why it might’ve been freezing its stinger off in Montana in January.

Dean smothers the gasp that rises through his chest into his pillow and forces himself to name prime numbers until he falls asleep.

#60: Before you decide to murder me, let me explain

When your father is Alpha Werewolf of the biggest, strongest pack in California, you don’t get to have a small wedding. That’s how Scott McCall’s daughter, Evelyn, finds herself mailing out five hundred invitations.

“I wonder what Lori will say during her Maid-of-Honor speech?” Evelyn’s fiancé, Linda, ponders in between licking envelopes. She scrunches her face at the taste of too-sweet glue.

Evelyn stuffs another invite. “Probably something pithy and perfect. Lydia Martin is her mother; perfection runs in her genes.”

“I hope she tells the story of how we got together.” Linda shoots Evelyn a mischievous smile. “We have the best story.”

“One of the best, for sure.” She presses down a flowery stamp.

“Pffft,” Linda scoffs, blue eyes rolling. “Name a better story than ours.”

No hesitation. “Uncle Stiles and Uncle Derek.”

Linda’s mouth drops, as does her pile of unlicked envelopes. “Now this I gotta hear.”

25 years prior…

“So, we’re all agreed on the plan of action?” Scott looks around the room, seeking nods of confirmation. “Great. We move in on the Rakshaka at sundown.”

“Wait, tonight?” Derek asks. “Hang on...let me just see if tonight works.” He pulls out his phone.

“Are you… checking your schedule?” Scott tilts his head to the side, face akin to a bewildered puppy.

“Geez, Derek.” Stiles smirks, leftover slice of pizza halfway to his mouth. “Can you fit in saving Beacon Hills between your chest wax and your nightly face mask?”

Derek flips him off with one hand, keeps scrolling with the other.

“Derek,” Malia sighs, rubbing her temples. “This is weird. And if I think it’s weird, then it’s really weird.”

“What is he looking at?” Liam peeks over Derek’s shoulder as he frantically taps on his phone screen.

“Nothing,” Derek answers, at the same time Malia says, “His horoscope.”

The room comes to a stunned halt. “H-horoscope?” No one notices Stiles’ stutter, all so focused on the flushed tips of Derek’s ears.

Derek’s eyebrows scream, Come at me, bro. “The one in the newspaper has been eerily spot on these last few weeks,” he tells everyone, before focusing on his cousin. “And it’s not weird. It’s astrology—the effect celestial bodies have on people. Were-creatures live and die by the moon; not that different when you think about it. And the zodiac has been around since Babylonian time.”

“Does, uh,” Stiles starts, voice squeaky. He’s avoiding Scott’s wide eyes boring into his soul. “Does it say tonight is good? For...you?”

Derek frowns down at his phone. “Avoid death and crippling injury. Stay in tonight, order takeout and chill. It’s like…” Derek scratches at his stubble. “Like someone wrote it with me in mind.”

Stiles chokes on a bite of reheated cheese and tomato sauce.

“Oh, no. Wait. I was looking at yesterday’s horoscope. Today’s says, Take a chance or risk you’ve been putting off. Success is within your grasp.” He looks up, smiles at the room with blindingly white bunny teeth. Stiles’ heart rabbits in his chest. “That sounds promising. Let’s do this.”

And Derek does succeed; they all do. Stiles comes out the least scathed, with two broken fingers and a gash over his left eye, but you’d never know it with how fast the wolves are healing.

Scott grabs Stiles’ arm and hustles him toward the Jeep. “Nice job, everyone. We’ll reconvene tomorrow. Gotta find this guy a First-Aid kit.”

“But,” Liam pouts, “you said we’d go for celebratory milkshakes after we killed it.”

“Sorry, Liam,” Scott throws over his shoulder, pushing Stiles into the driver side. “Rain check!”

They’re a safe three miles away before Scott says, “Are you going to tell Derek you’re writing horoscopes for the Beacon Gazette?”

“Nope. Definitely not.”

“He’s going to murder you when he finds out.”

“He’ll never find out.”

Derek finds out.

He’s pinned to the door of his bedroom three weeks later by a werewolf who snuck in through his window, and Stiles is experiencing a very erotic case of déjà vu.

“Before you decide to murder me, let me explain!”

Derek’s pointer finger jabs into the tip of Stiles’ nose. “No. I’m going to rip your throat out—”

“With your teeth, yeah yeah I know. We’ve been here before, literally and figuratively. Possibly metaphorically. Sadly, never sexually.”

“Stiles!”

“Okay, listen! Being a broke college kid is hard. I’m doubling up on classes so working during the semester is out of the question, and I refuse to ask my dad to dip into his hard earned pension. The Gazette was hiring, and I have a minor in Astronomy.”

The toes of Stiles’ shoes scratch against the carpet when Derek drags him closer. “So, what? You wanted to mess with me? Like last week’s, Your eyebrows are too smug for someone who still can’t figure out Netflix. Take a special friend out to the movies instead. Or Friday’s, Keep your friends close and your frenemies closer, but keep that cute guy with the moles the closest of all. That’s the one that gave you away, FYI.”

“Derek,” Stiles whines. “I like you. A lot. Please don’t murder me.”

Derek rolls his eyes. “You couldn’t just tell me? Like a normal person? I can’t believe I fell for a crappy-horoscope-writing idiot.”

“So, you do like me?” Stiles perks up as Derek puts him down. “Like, like me like me?”

Derek scowls. “Despite my better judgement, yes.”

“Dude!” Stiles fist pumps the air, ignoring Derek’s, Don’t call me dude. “We are going to have the best getting together story, ever!”
