How to Play as Raven in DnD 5e

In the past, I’ve tried to offer multiple build options for how to play as Raven, but this time, I want to lay out what I currently view to be the single best way to play her. The main reason I’ve had to build and rebuild Raven so much is that she has a lot of powers, and a lot of classes and subclasses work for what she can do. However, I think I can finally put this dog to rest with one final build.

In the past, I’ve always made Raven’s race a Tiefling, but I realized that while that works on a lore case, the mechanics don’t really fit Raven that well. In terms of mechanics, the best possible choice for Raven’s race is actually a Fallen Aasimar. The reason? Necrotic Shroud. It is the only subrace feature that effectively lets a character go “dark mode” without wasting a 6th level spell slot on Tasha’s Otherworldly Guise, or getting the Second Skin Dark Gift from Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. Thanks to Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, we can now alter the racial stat bonus to +2 INT, +1 WIS. As an Aasimar, Raven gets 60 ft of Darkvision, resistance to Radiant and Necrotic damage, learns to read, write, and speak Celestial, knows the Light cantrip, has Healing Hands that can restore up to 20 HP, and can activate a Necrotic Shroud, which gives her a dark and terrifying aura for 1 mintue (10 rounds) where she deals extra necrotic damage equal to her level.

For her background, Raven grew up in the distant dimension of Azarath, which in DnD cosmology is likely the Astral Plane, the Ethereal Plane, or one of the Upper Planes where she could be raised far away from her father’s influence, though a DnD variant of Raven could absolutely have grown up in The Nine Hells with her father. Regardless of where she was raised, Raven eventually left her extra planar home and ventured to the Material Plane, making her a Far Traveler for proficiency in Insight and Perception. As a Far Traveler, she also gets another language, and we’ll teach her to read, write, and speak Infernal.

Raven values discipline and self-control, she maintains a regular meditation schedule, and keeps her emotions in check at all times. When Robin is forced to become Slade’s apprentice, Raven is the first Titan to say they have to take him down just like any other criminal, putting her friendship with Robin aside in order to do what she views as right. As such, I would label Raven as Lawful Good.

WIZARD SCHOOL OF THEURGY (MIND)

I don’t blame you if you’ve never heard of this Domain before. It’s not in one of the primary sourcebooks. The Mind Domain Cleric can be found in Exploring Eberron, and it’s honestly perfect for Raven. It primarily focuses on psionics and mental magic. It’s the only way for Raven to learn Telekinesis if you were to build her as a Cleric. If your DM isn’t a fan of the Mind Domain, then Life and Grave Theurgy Wizards also work for Raven, as keeping her friends from dying is important to Raven. As a Wizard, Raven gets two skills from the Wizard skill list. Since we’re an extra planar traveler new to the Material Plane, we’ll take Arcana and Religion as our skills of choice. You can take History if you prefer, but due to how new we are to this plane, it makes sense we wouldn’t be knowledgeable of the histories and lore of the Material Plane.

OPTIONAL MULTICLASS ROGUE

Since all classes get their final ASI at 19th level, it leaves Raven free to get a single level of Rogue if she so chooses. Aside from an excuse to put points into her Dexterity, taking a level in rogue gives her 1 bonus skill from the Rogue skill list, expertise in two skills, adds 1d6 sneak attack damage to spell attacks where she has advantage, and lets her know Thieves’ Cant. It’s not mandatory for Raven’s build, but as an empath, expertise in Insight and Perception means that Raven can sense the emotions of others so well that she can tell what their intentions toward her are, and detect the presence of other people before she even sees them. It also super charges her Passive Perception, making it harder for enemies to sneak up on her. For her free Rogue skill, go with Deception, Intimidation, or Investigation.

RAVEN’S EXTENDED SPELLBOOK

Wizards have the unique advantage of being able to learn more than the 44 spells and 5 cantrips allowed them by their class. While it doesn’t change the number of spells Raven can prepare in a day, it does give Raven more spells she can pick up if she so chooses. So, this is a list of all the spells that didn’t make the first string, but are still in character. Of course, this is your build of Raven, and you can absolutely pick spells from the extended spellbook over spells listed above if you prefer it. The 1st level feature of the Mind Domain Cleric lets Raven turn Radiant spells into Psychic damage, which is great for a Mind Theurgy Wizard build of Raven, but if your DM disallowed it, I didn’t want to clutter her main spellbook with radiant spells, so I put them all down here. They’re applicable because Mind Domain can turn them into Psionic attacks, but not applicable if your DM makes you take Life or Grave instead. In the classic Teen Titans episode Fear Itself, Raven summons nightmare fodder because she was afraid and her emotions were out of control. As such, I’ve included a few summoning spells in her extended spellbook.

FEATURES

Arcane Initiate - Learn Wizard and Cleric spells, provided you learn the Domain Spells of the Cleric Domain you selected with Divine Inspiration. Arcane Recovery - Recover up to 10 spell slots of 5th level or lower on a short rest. Bend Reality - Replace any failed saving throw within 30 feet with a 20 once per short or long rest. Celestial Resistance - Resist Radiant and Necrotic damage. Channel Arcana - A variation of Channel Divinity, gain 2 uses at level 6, and 3 at level 18. Restores on a short or long rest. Channel Arcana: Divine Arcana - Expend a Channel Arcana. Add +2 to spell attack roll or +2 to the spell DC of your next spell attack. Channel Arcana: Psychic Feedback - Expend a Channel Arcana. Impose disadvantage on a Wisdom saving throw of a creature within 30 feet. If the Wisdom saving throw wasn’t caused by one of your spells, deal psychic damage equal to half your Wizard level before they roll the saving throw. Divine Inspiration - Gain access to the domain spells of a Cleric Domain. Flash of Insight - You can reroll a skill check, adding half your Wizard level to the second roll. You can use this feature twice per short or long rest. Gestalt Anchor - Any friendly creature within 10 ft of you (including yourself) gains +2 to any INT, WIS, or CHA saving throws. Healing Hands - Touch restores HP equal to level Light Bearer - You know the Light Cantrip Necrotic Shroud - Radiate a dark aura for 1 minute. Creatures within 10 ft must pass a DC 14 Charisma saving throw or be afraid of you. When you hit a target with a spell attack, deal additional Necrotic damage equal to your level. Use once per long rest. Psychic Force - Spells and cantrips you cast that deal Radiant damage can deal Psychic damage instead. Signature Spell: Choose two 3rd level spells. These spells can be cast at 3rd level once per long rest without requiring a spell slot. Sneak Attack: Add 1d6 damage to attack rolls made with advantage. Spell Mastery: Choose a 1st and 2nd level spell. These spells can be cast at 1st and 2nd level respectively without spending a spell slot.

I’m quite proud of how Raven came out. Just about any spell she could ever use is accounted for, with the exception of spells like Hellish Rebuke and Eldritch Blast, which a simple Magic Initiate would cover. But I’m glad that Raven is able to showcase everything she’s able to do. I’m aware that not all DMs will approve of the Mind Domain Theurgy Wizard, but I think it’s the closest we’ve ever come to building Raven here.

1. If you want to start an IC conflict then you, as the aggressor, should always consent to the aggressee’s form of conflict resolution. Whether that’s emotes, rolls, or in-game PvP. 2. Death Knight RPers have a disproportionately elitist population compared to other class RPers. Worse than Paladins imho. I don’t get why you all make up random rules & lore to fit your narrative. But shit man pull the stick out of your ass. Acherus isn’t some world wide super military power of master discipline. You’re a group of renegade zombies with swords in one Necropolis and a few outposts. You’ve had just as many rogue knights, unchecked undead, and shady deals as anyone else and regularly let other factions/orders clean up your mess. Where were you when Raemien the Soultaker was killing paladins? Exactly.

7.2 (PTR): Paladin Class Mount Questline

* * * * CLASS HALL SPOILERS AHEAD * * * *

The paladin mount questline starts as an homage to the original paladin charger quests that were removed from the game prior to Cataclysm. Paladin players must gather materials to create suitable barding, then go to Stratholme to gather holy water and rescue a few wayward paladins before stopping Raemien the Soultaker from doing some nasty plague business.

Your endgame in all of this? Retrieve the legendary undead mount of Baron Rivendare himself, Deathcharger’s Reins.

Paladin players then purify the steed, restoring it’s spirit to the Light and repurposing the grateful beast as a mount worthy of the Highlord.

Mount Tints

Default class mount: Glowing Reins of the Golden Charger

All paladins will receive the default Golden tint regardless of their spec upon completing the quest. The other three tints cost 10,000 Order Resources and require you to unlock ALL the Artifact Traits including the new 7.2 traits for specific weapons.

The Silver Hand: Heraldic Reins of the Valorous Charger

Ashbringer: Harsh Reins of the Vengeful Charger

Truthguard: Stoic Reins of the Vigilent Charger

Each tint seems inspired by one of the four main paladin Orders represented in the class hall. The Vengeful Charger (Ashbringer) almost looks like a paladin version of the Reins of the Crimson Deathcharger.

Animations and Effects

The animations are the same basic horse animations all WoW horse models share. The Charger’s ears bounce slightly when walking.

Along with the usual glowy bits on the gems and around the hooves and tail, it also leaves a trail of glowing Light-seared hoofprints on the ground as it runs:

THIS IS A FLYING MOUNT. We’re still in the PTR so animations may change, but currently the Charger simply gallops through the air like the Headless Horseman mount. It leaves a trail of glowing hoofprints in the sky behind it:

Currently only the default Golden tint leaves glowing hoofprints. The other tints will also likely get glowing hoofprints, and may even get their own tint-specific hoofprint colors.

has beau ever gotten to a breaking point, whether it's physical exhaustion or emotional? what are her favourite kinds of goodies to eat? what keeps her so kinda and light-hearted? does she have a steed/mount and if so, did she name it?

beau and breaking points

she’s carried a heavy burden upon her shoulders for a very long time -- as has any other soldier; any other person caught up in a war. she lost her parents ( and her home very quickly after ); she lost contact with the limited amount of friends she had and she was forced to adapt to a world that, until she lost both of those things, she didn’t realise was plagued with pockets of warfare -- civil war or otherwise.

she was accustomed to those kinds of things already, though. being raised on the outskirts of society and warned of the prejudices she might have faced, she... kind of didn’t expect any less for herself, really. she was still affected greatly by the atrocities she had seen; by her own loneliness and, to a slightly lesser degree, the burden she put upon herself to be a beacon of light even in the darkest times... but up until her time on Pandaria she did not allow herself to break down and face those emotions she had thus far expertly suppressed. she did not feel she could -- but she did, eventually.

it was not a good time for her. being made to face those thoughts and confront them directly was not a small feat -- more so for someone who had thus far lived off the principle that she could ( and should ) keep her emotions... or, well, the ugly ones, locked away. it took a lot for her to face the reality that not only was her behaviour unhealthy, but also a detriment to the very cause that she wished to pursue. if she was so numb to the world -- how could she affect its growth in any way; how could she protect that which she showed no true care for?

the teachings of the Light revolve around the notion of your actions having a direct influence upon the world. it is a direct reflection of your own self -- and to hold onto so much negativity was, in the end, detrimental to not only herself, but to the wider world as well.

thus, she spent the time confronting her emotions and, slowly, coming to terms with them -- whilst accepting that, as part of any being’s psyche, some events would take considerably longer than others. she... is still not very good at reaching out to others to talk about these things, but she has now accepted that she needs to take the time to reflect; to confront how she is feeling so that she may move forward. dealing with such a heavy burden gave her clarity; she felt that, for the first time, she was really able to breathe.

beau and goodies

beau is a fan of fruits and nuts, generally; things that are quite easy to find and don’t usually require payment. the sweet fruits are always something she considers a good, though she knows that its not quite the kind of goods people would expect. there is a form of pan-cake her father used to make, which put a nice spin onto what would have otherwise been unleavened bread: he would add the sweet fruits to the batter and he would cook it as they normally would, but the process of the fruits breaking down into the batter often made it sweeter and, once finished, it acted as a form of very basic -- albeit flat -- cake.

times, if they were fortunate enough to acquire some, he’d add chocolate chunks to it -- which she really enjoyed. nothing in comparison to the treats, cakes and pastries you see on display in the market stalls, however. she’d be happy to indulge in those treats someday, but with her youth holding limited experiences of them... she does not have all that much of a sweet tooth.

beau and her attitude

to be honest... were someone to pose the question to Dawnstrider: what makes you so kind? she would... ponder, for a moment, sure. but eventually she would just shrug her shoulders; she doesn’t know.

from the moment she came into the world, she felt she had a connection to it. she’s a very empathetic person; very aware of how people’s actions can affect and impact others, even in ways they didn’t think of themselves. there are people in the world who are just born to be that way, and Bo’dariel Dawnstrider is one of those people.

what keeps her going is the mystery -- even for her. she does not know how she managed to press forward when the situation looked dire. she does not know how she still remains hopeful, despite all the atrocities people can -- and have -- committed. she does not know how exactly she’s able to look one of her kin in the eye and accept their prejudices, and also proceed to fight to protect their life when they themselves would throw Dawnstrider to the wayside.

perhaps it is the thought of people’s innate ability to change; to adapt and to grow through what they go through; the ability that all people have to learn from their mistakes... and the mistakes of others. perhaps it is her faith in the Light; the teachings it provides to her that have her ( eventually ) lead a life that puts positive behaviours at the forefront, whilst acknowledging the terrible side of things to keep herself light-hearted and in balance. perhaps she was just born to be this way; to offer kindness even to the most cruel of hearts, for kindness in a cruel world is a long-sought sanctuary for many -- and she is willing to provide it.

but she doesn’t know, ultimately: she’s just glad she’s able to.

beau and steeds

if you asked Beau if she had a steed or a mount? no. if you asked me? yes... kind of. Treo is the only being that fits the bill in all of her iterations, but Beau does not consider her to be a mount or a steed, but a person -- that she is able to ride upon, should Treo allow her to climb onto her back. before Treo? Beau walked everywhere.

in the few threads I have where she is Highlord ( the best choice, honestly, but I also acknowledge that it would be quite the feat of strength to achieve ), she does acquire the Charger from Raemien in Stratholme. she’s noticeably excited about it because she’s associated paladins with their mighty steeds since she was a little girl, and acquiring her own was akin to a childhood dream coming true -- let alone the additional sentiment of cleansing him directly; saving him from potential torment.

she’s not sure on the name to begin with and ends up pondering on the idea for a long while. people suggest plenty, though none quite fit the bill. cobalt is the one that eventually sticks, though; they both settle for that name, in the end. he is a handsome boy and she loves him dearly. there’s also bonus points for when he’s introduced to Treo and Treo got to experience riding atop another being’s back, for a change.
