Day 9: Pseudofauna
(since I couldn't really find a difference between this and pseudophyta, I just went with a sequel to that story with the second ever frightling to exist) Sorry it took so long sir, but we did manage to locate our creation blueprints. I’ll have them delivered soon, so now I guess we can start the interview. Yes I am Fatale. My story? So it started when Nightmare escaped, apparently the Engineer said he was too soft. So instead of just neglecting him with the occasional test, once I was bred, he tested me over and over again. He molded me into a frightling more willing to scare, and more willing I was indeed. The only thing that gave me pause was when they occasionally mentioned Nightmare, my supposed failure of a precursor. Of course, that plan failed once I actually started getting deployed. Mainly to normal people, they didn’t want to attract the attention of my real targets just yet. Course, that didn’t last too long. They found me anyway and they caught me. But instead of locking me away in a cage, they just let Nightmare tell me about how life was better. First I rebelled, how could I not after everything the Engineer drilled into me? But soon enough I started to listen, and I started to experience that emotion that Nightmare would talk so much about: love. How could I not fall in love with him? He showed me a grander world of both being and feeling. So I stayed, and I guess that led to the Engineer canceling his plans to make more of us. And that’s where I stand now, we’ve learned to control our powers, and now I can stand even in front of you and not change. What was that? Oh, the scythes? I actually don’t know where they come from, everything else is either insectoid or the wolf teeth. Well, I think that was a nice talk.

This is a list format microfiction I posted to my patreon last year, and have now released with some slightly expanded writing and new illustrations; I won't illustrate all my list-fiction like this, but this was my attempt to conceive of "creatures" so simple and so abstract I could illustrate most of them in only seconds and it actually isn't even definite that they're "creatures" at all, really:

There are sixteen at the link, though a couple of them couldn't be illustrated at all. I tried to make their descriptions actually more puzzling than their aesthetics :)

Notes: The Private Life of Objects
In college, I wrote an absolutely insane essay about The Street of Crocodiles by Bruno Schulz (and some other texts) and Jewish masculinity. Specifically it hinged on Jacob, the protagonist’s mad father, and his identification with objects. I’m putting together a project about some of these ideas- A seed that started in Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain with his postulation of life itself as a corruption of matter.
The Street of Crocodiles, Bruno Schulz
“There is no dead matter,” He says, “lifelessness is only a disguise behind which hide unknown forms of life... even if the classical methods o creation should prove inaccessible forevermore, there still remain some illegal methods, an infinity of heretical and criminal methods .... (59-60)
“We shall give priority to trash. We are simply entranced and enchanted by the cheapness, shabbiness, and inferiority of material... Can you understand ... the deep meaning of the weakness, that... Demiurge, that great master and artist, made matter invisible, made it disappear under the surface of life. We, on the contrary, love its creaking, its resistance, its clumsiness.” (62)
Pseudoflora and pseudofauna, or objects that act like living things (67)
Dead Collections, Isaac Fellman
“A thing is just a slow event.” (1) More here as well?
“The room felt alive, and the life felt as if it were OF my life.” (169)
“All around me was the voluptuous rot of dead collections... you could sense that the information  itself had cracked open and flowed away, and what it left behind had nothing to hold it together. Every object in the world is formed of molecules that have come together by human intention, and now the intention was gone, and the objects were losing their shape.” (160) more here about abandoned buildings?

The Thing That Was Not A Squirrel. Perhaps it got its name because it did, maybe, resemble a squirrel at first glance, until one took a closer look. Or perhaps it was something so incomprehensibly alien that a squirrel was the closest thing the human mind could percieve it as. Nobody is really sure.

Pseudogiraffe : a chimera that looks like a giraffe but is not made of giraffe parts.
Giraffes are known by Europeans in the Middle Ages through their trade with North Africa. They have been described in Europe, like many animals at the time, by comparing them to known animals resulting in a distortion of the initial observations. They were described as between the camel and the leopard, and therefore called camelopard (464). This name has been kept in the binomial nomenclature, Giraffa camelopardalis.
The Questing Beast (468) is a cross-animal from Arthurian legend. It has the head and neck of a snake, the body of a leopard, the haunches of a lion and the feet of a hart (deer). Their association with giraffes seems to be a modern confusion.
The Qilin (376) is a mythical creature from China and other East Asian cultures. Earliest references are from the 5th century BC, and they became associated with giraffes in the Ming dynasty around the 15th century when they bought some from Africa. Descriptions vary depending on era and region, but cloven hooves and horn(s) are fairly consistent features and may have play a part in the connection between the Qilin and the giraffe.
The serpopard (236) is a mythical animal from ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian art, but there is no known name for the creature in any ancient text. This snake-necked leopard served as a decorative ornament. Although the shape may evoke a giraffe, some arguments suggest that they were distinct : the Egyptians represented animals in a very recognizable way, and there might be objects representing both giraffe and serpopards.
The last two are chimeras invented after suggestions. For the the first one, @james-silvercat asked for “Something that is not a giraffe, and maybe never was.” (415). Before doing this suggestion I never heard about all that stuff about giraffes and i learned it with your comments and reblogs ! For the second one (603) an anon wanted a fast animal and combined a leopard and a deer, reminding me all of this because the result was another pseudogiraffe.
Maybe a lot of you already knew all that stuff, but i just wanted to synthetize it in one post, and tell you how greatefull i am to have you all, you teach me lots of things and make with this serie something i couldn’t do alone. Nothing makes me happier than see you adding amazing stuff under my drawings and i’m having so much fun discussing about mythology, creature design and all with you ! Thanks for being here, keep being great <3
