Cw: teeth, dental malpractice, vent post, don’t worry I have a competent team now
I’ve been going in to the dental school almost every week for more than a year now, getting major work done on about two-thirds of my teeth.
Thanks to the fun combo of weird recessive genes and literal malpractice, my teeth are messed up in interesting and expensive ways.
On the outside, they look fairly normal.
My hobby is watching the students quietly freak out when they see the X-rays.
There’s a committee of professors arguing about the situation with my lateral incisors. Still no agreement, because all options are bad. I was given incredibly botched dental implants when I was too young, and now there’s no obvious way to salvage the upper jaw without a risk of breaching through to the nasal cavity.
While they argue that over, we’ve been slowly working across my lower jaw.
Today was a consultation regarding the botched molar root canal. Because I’ve had dental malpractice on four completely separate occasions.
The endodontist started the visit by being like “Best practice is usually to save the tooth rather than extraction. We will take images and make a plan.”
and I was like, okay, so, FYI, Lidocaine doesn’t work normally on me, when the Third Malpractice Dude originally did this root canal he hit the maximum safe dose only halfway through and then tried to get through the next forty minutes of literally shredding my nerve ends with zero painkiller, and then he gave up and had me come back for a second session, and the same thing happened again, so please don’t do that to me a third time?
She was like ooookay, noted.
I was like so the other thing that happened was a tool broke off inside one of the roots, and the guy couldn’t figure out how to remove it, so he left it in there as packing material? I guess he was getting frustrated with my uncontrollable sobbing and just wanted to be done with that root. That must be how the infection got pushed down to where it’s currently eating at the bone, haha. Anyway that bit of metal is still stuck in there, plus he used another metal rod in the packing?
She was like that’s a complication, but I am an esteemed specialist in repairing root canals, and in the standard xray it looks reasonable.
I was like okay and also I’ve been told that my roots are in a really weird shape, and very close to the major nerve?
She was like well, the 3D images have almost finished compiling, we shall assess all of these factors together and decide.
The 3D images loaded.
We looked at the coronal view.
I was like “Wow. Obviously, NO.”
She was like “Let me help you schedule with Extraction. I have GOT to show this to the attending physician. It was lovely meeting you!”

Anyway, ignoring that, I am once again creatively bankrupt. Therefore, earlier today, I decided which word of the NATO phonetic alphabet the characters are. Why? Wish I knew.
Alpha- Shelby (she basically won that event in book 2 and I feel like making her Yankee is too easy)
Bravo- Franz (he's the type of guy to say this word non-ironically)
Charlie-
Delta- Lucy (4th letter in the Greek alphabet and she was introduced in book 4. This is a stretch, and my geography is rusty at best, but isn't a delta when a river deposits it water into another? Like a change. And Lucy represented choice- arguably, the choice to change).
Echo- Nigel (sorry, nigel, but the word kind of embodies living in your father's shadow being your one of two fleshed out character traits)
Foxtrot-
Golf- the Professor (he's the type of dude to actually be interested in golf)
Hotel-
India- the Contessa (look, I know she wanted a continent, but this is the most I can give her)
Juliet-
Kilo-
Lima- Laura (Lima, after one quick google search, looks like a very pretty place. Laura is a very pretty person. Fight me)
Mike- the Colonel (listen. This guy needs a first name. The sharpness of Mike suits him better than Charlie, and I've already assigned Oscar)
November- Raven. ("It's dark, like my soul. It's cold, like my soul" vibes)
Oscar- Otto (we all know why)
Papa- Nathaniel (the only reason his specific character exists (rather than the Architect being some random dude) is to give Nero daddy issues)
Quebec-
Romeo-
Sierra-
Tango-
Uniform- Wing (his collectedness)
Victor- Anastasia (I know she "loses" but her vibe is very much that of a winner)
Whiskey- Nero (this doesn't need explaining)
Xray- Zero (his mind-fuckery skills)
Yankee-
Zulu-

Today was my husband’s first day of the semester and his professor asked people what they did over the short break. He told her that his wife had a baby and also brought up the specific NICU issue we had because he had actually benefited from info from her class in being able to understand what was going on and have intelligent discussions with the baby’s doctors and nurses, and the doctor even let him assist with removing the baby’s chest tube given the knowledge level he had demonstrated. So the professor goes, “Do you have any pictures?” and my husband is like “oh yeah!” and whips out his phone and starts showing her all the baby’s xrays until she’s like, “I was expecting a cute photo of the baby, but sure.” 😂

I'm slowly catching up 😅 Pt One HERE
Tw: su!c!d3 mention (tears alert), drugs
Sally and I met at the park just like we'd agreed. He ran to me and enveloped me in the best hug of my life, lifting me a few inches from the ground and spinning in a tight circle before he sat me back down. His eyes were crinkled at the sides, my only indication of the smile he wore under his prosthetic.
"I missed you so much" Sally laughed as he released me.
"We texted the whole three days" I laughed, "but... I missed you too."
I really had. All I'd been able to think about for the past seventy two hours had been Sally, and our situation. He'd infiltrated my mind like a song you can't get out of your head, even after you hear it again, rendering me powerless to do anything but meet him. Of course, Sally made it easy to think about him, texting at all hours with pictures and videos from his reality.
And then there were the dreams. I hadn't told Sally about it, but I'm pretty sure I'd been dreaming about the Grace from his reality, her memories specifically.
Over the past three nights, sleep had come oddly easily to me. I would fall asleep as soon as I closed my eyes and the dreams would begin, playing out from Grace's point of view, making the immersion complete. The first time Grace saw Sally, weeks before they got paired up by their professor, Dr. Wardwell. The shy glances they stole of each other were enough to make you sick from the sweetness. I saw dates, hangouts, a night where Sally played the guitar and serenaded Grace in a smooth bass-baritone.
I saw more private moments, too. The first time Grace saw Sally without his prosthetic and she told him he was beautiful in his ruination, like the Coliseum in Greece. Babysitting Soda for Maple and Chug. The first time they made love, when Ash told Grace that Sally had been arrested. The sadness she felt as she visited Todd in the psychiatric hospital and as she watched Maple slowly become a feral thing, eventually having to cage her up like an animal, knowing Sally could save them if only they'd let him out. The nights spent with Ash and Neil pouring over law books as Neil explained things, trying to use his prelaw major to help. Grace slowly learning defensive law. Grace arguing with Ash before and after Sally's trial, not talking to her for weeks after. The reconciled after Grace's request to the governor for a stay of execution was denied, shortly after Grace uncovered that the governor happened to be a member of the DOG. Her growing hopelessness and depression.
I even got to experience Grace's last moments, the fact that she threw up the first handful of pills out of nervousness. And that the last thing she saw was a picture of her and Sally two weeks before the incident, smiling with Larry, Todd, Maple, Chug, Soda and Neil at the lake.
So maybe all of that also had a hand in it.
Or maybe it was how I couldn't help but smile when I looked at him, or how I waited for his texts. Thanks to Grace's memories, I had xray vision when it came to his prosthetic, knowing every scar and line on his face. He was beautiful, I agreed, and I could tell he still would be without the scars. And he didn't even know it. Maybe it was the way my heart pitter pattered when he held my hand or if he looked at me too long, his sapphire gaze drawing me in like drowning pools every time. We spent spans of minutes lost in each others gazes as we looped around the park a few times.
"Can I see your house?" Sally asked, "It's pretty cold out. And you know you always get a head cold if you stay out in it too long." I opened my mouth to suggest the diner or maybe the cafe across town, but Sally cut me off, "Plus, we can talk more freely there."
He had a point. Besides, who was I to quibble about personal space? I'd dreamed about Grace and Sally trying to have quiet sex so Todd and Neil couldn't hear from the living room, even though the radio was blaring.
"Sure" I said and Sally started pulling me to my car. He excitedly opened the driver door for me, and then raced around to the passenger side, practically ripping the door open before hopping in and slamming it behind him. I got in and laughed as we buckled up, "Excited, are we?"
The tops of Sally's ears pinkened as he nodded, "Your place is always so cool. Do you have Olivia by chance? And Punky? You got them to help picked a hairless breed because they have fewer teeth that aren't sharp... And because the Aztec's thought they were the guardians of hell."
I smiled fondly, nodding and said, "My chupacabras" as Sally said "Our chupcabras" and I had to fight not to look at him I pulled into traffic, "Yeah, I have them. But Olivia is an old lady, twelve."
"She always is. She was older when you adopted her and she died while I was prison. You gave Punky to your friend, Crow before... Well you know."
The silence was heavy as I drove the short distance home, "She couldn't have known" I said quietly and Sally nodded.
"I know. No one was expecting me to live."
I pulled into my parking spot and turned the car off, "Well, here we are!"
Sally flew out of his seat, slamming the door to stand in front of my modest white stone bungalow. I walked up next to him just in time for him to stride up onto the porch. I watched as he looked around for a moment, before picking up a flower pot with last summer's dirt still in it. He picked up my key and let himself in, replacing the key and pot. He could've picked any of the six sitting there, and I had a feeling it wasn't luck that he found it.
I followed Sal inside as he looked everywhere inside, seemingly orientating himself and then taking off into the kitchen. I caught up to him in time to see him pulling two mugs down from the cabinet, going straight to it, and then picking up the kettle and filling it.
"Do you want white chocolate mint or apple cinnamon?" Sally asked as he turned the burner for the kettle on. "You can go either way on a day like this."
I blinked in shock, feeling somewhat like an amnesiac since Sally knew me so well, but I only knew him from a long conversation, texts, and memories from a me from a different reality. It was bizarre and oddly comforting.
"I'm feeling more apple cinnamon at the moment, but get a white chocolate for later" I said as I took a seat on a stool at the counter. Sally went to my drawer where I kept my teas and pulled out two of each.
I watched as Sally made tea, sitting our mugs next to each other on the counter in front of me. Then he stripped off his hoodie, revealing a Metallica shirt (Kill Em All), tucking his beanie into the hoodie's pocket. I noticed he was sweating, small beads of sweat collecting in the ridges of the scars that traced down his neck from under his prosthetic. He sat down next to me, trying to play it off nonchalantly.
"You can take your prosthetic off if you need to" I told Sally and he immediately started unbuckling it. He caught it in one hand, lowering it from his face slowly. He sat it on the counter with worry etching is face.
The lighter scarred side of his face, the left side, bored pink skin from the heat trapped under Sally's mask, a bead about to drop from his brow into his eye. I caught it on a knuckle just as it was about to fall and then used my hands to clear the sheen of sweat from his face on both sides. I kept eye contact the entire time, feeling it was of the utmost importance to. I didn't focus on the scars. I already knew them like the back of my own hand.
After I was done, I wiped my hands on my jeans and then brought my hands back up to hold his face between them. Sal froze like a deer in headlights, face still worried, but hopeful. Slowly I leaned in and kissed Sally's torn lips.
Sally's tension left in a rush of air through his nares (medical terminology for nose holes) as he kissed me back. I could feel all nine years of his yearning for just this in his kiss and he pulled me closer, wrapping his arms around me. As we kissed, I traced the scars on his face lightly with my fingertips, exploring pits and ridges both smooth and rough, letting my left thumb run along the curve of the scar that hooked his right cheek, exposing his back teeth on that side. Sally's hands moved to cover mine as he slowly pulled away to rest his head on my forehead, eyes still closed.
"What made you come around?" Sally asked peacefully, just holding my hands to his face.
"You, Sally, just you." I said quietly, "And I may or may not have started having dreams. I saw how much you loved each other."
Sally's eyes snapped open and he pulled back slightly, now gripping my upper arms, "How much did you see?"
"Everything" I whispered, tears forming in my vision as I remembered. I wanted to kiss him again, so I did. Sally responded passionately, honestly not the best at it, but that only made it more endearing. It seemed right and I apparently knew just how to respond, matching his intensity until he pulled away reluctantly. Sally stood to hug me, holding me tight to his chest. His heart beat betrayed his calm breathing. It was beating a mile a minute in his chest as we held each other while I breathed in the crisp, clean scent of him.
"Does this mean I can stay?" Sally asked, pulling back to look down at me and I nodded.
"Yes" I said, "You can stay."
I barely got a breath in before I was crushed against Sally's chest. He let out a loud whoop that brought Punky running in from her spot with Olivia next to the heater vent, bouncing as she barked at Sally's presence, having missed when he came in. Sally kissed the top of my head and let me go.
"I'll go get my things tonight after you go to sleep, tell Todd and Ash that I'm staying. I can leave my new phone with them so we can stay in touch." He leaned in and gave me a quick kiss, "But for now, got any good movies?"
"Um yeah" I said, realizing that while Netflix did exist in 2006, it was a service that mailed you DVDs. The company had really done well over the years. I grabbed our mugs, now that they had cooled enough to drink and led Sally into the living room. Punky followed us, now curious.
I put our mugs on the coffee table and picked up the remote, switching the TV on and putting on Netflix. I watched awe come over Sally's face as I signed in and handed him the remote so he could scroll.
"Holy fuck knuckles" Sally breathed, stopping on Year One. "Is that Slip from Neverending Story 3?!" He gestured at Jack Black with the remote.
"Yeah, he kinda became a big thing in comedy. This one's a comedy about Biblical times. Stoner humor. Wanna watch? I have something that can set the mood right", I said, pulling my smoke tray from under the couch.
"Oh good" Sally chuckled as he sat down on the couch and picked the tray up, "I won't have to talk you into smoking with me again. You were pretty adament about it at first." He hit the OK button and put the remote down to deal with the weed, loading my pipe with graceful movements as I settled in beside him.
"Sally?" I asked as I watched him close everything up.
"Mmhmm?" He hummed as he lit the pipe, taking a big hit and holding it.
"One letter, four letters, three letters, two" I said, remembering it from a dream, "I still don't know what it means, but I know I'm supposed to say it back." I took the pipe, inhaling carefully as it was still lit.
Sally smiled and it was radiant. "It means, 'I love you too'. But I want you to say it because you want to, not because you know I want you to."
I exhaled and laughed, "You are all I've thought about since we met. I've got all of Grace's memories." I tapped my temple, "I'm Grace, just from a different time and place, just like you said. If it's not love, it's heading that way fast."
Sally's eyes were wet with unshed tears. I put down the pipe and he pulled me into his arms. "I love you Gracie Face."
I smiled and kissed his cheek, "I love you too, Sally Face."

Episode 6 - A look back on how the interns remind the group of friends of their previous mistakes. Jeongwon being a great and warm pediatrician comforts the family of a unborn child with esophageal atresia. Junwan gives a professional advice to a intern that its okay to be emotional to a patient but reminds him to do his job right.
SONGHWA
A patient (Du-na) has been in a motorycle accident. Songhwa is always busy and she never turns down a patient in need and Ikjun just shakes his head left to right in disappointment after giving her advice to say “no...im fully booked”. After the surgery she informed the parents that the surgery went well. She suffered a skull fracture while she hit her head on the ground. There were a few bleedings with meninges and Professor Songhwa was able to operate her quickly. They also got rid of the blood inside her skull.  The bleeding was difficult to be stopped so it took a while although the surgery went well. Bleeding results in complications. The brain is swollen and they couldnt close up the skull and will stitch up the skin back when its better. Songhwa informs them in a mellow manner that she cant guarantee that Duna will be able to live. Songhwa also added that Duna’s brain isnt dead and tells them not to lose hope.
JEONGWON: Seokhyeong asks help from Jeongwon about the unborn baby
Yang Seok-hyeong has to deliver bad news about an unborn newborn baby suspecting to have abnormalities due to esophageal atresia. Seokhyeong explains that the esophageal stricture can be detected with a ultrasound before birth but not all the time. He says that it is likely that the baby may have it not until they do a X-ray. Seokhyeong decides to ask for direct advice to Jeongwon. The mother is at 30 weeks and her preeclampsia is severe and the preterm birth is a possibility. Jeongwon speaks to the parents and inform them that theyll do a surgery a day or 2 after.  The father ask regarding a procedure he researched but Jeongwon mentioned that if the baby is too small they’ll have no choice but to perform a open-chest surgery. Jeongwon believes that the baby will grow up well as an adult if the surgery goes well too.
Jeongwon performed a surgery and informed the father and the grandmother that they inserted a tube through the baby’s mouth and did a xray. The EA is disconnected and they'll run test to test if there are congenital disorders. Jeongwon mentions that they’ll also do the EA surgery the next day. The baby’s weight is quite small but they cant perform thoracoscopy due to the size, so they decided to do open-chest surgery. It’ll be performed in the NICU instead of the OR. The grandmother pleads to Jeongwon to save the baby.
Jeongwon talks to the patient’s family. The baby’s EA is disconnected, between the esophagus and bronchial tubes there was a small by-passage. They’ll be able to seal and remove it during the surgery that happens that day.  They’ll then open up the ends of the esophagus for it to connect. The baby is in unstable condition but Jeongwon reassures the family that they have great experience performing this surgery and will get it done smoothly.
That night, Jeongwon was about to inform her the good news but the husband beat him to it. Jeongwon informs them that the surgery was difficult but her baby stayed strong and was able to hold on. More good news, they didn’t run into any problems during the surgery. Everything went well. The baby was born prematurely and the nurses will take good care of the baby at the NCIU. Jeongwon comforts the mother that it’s not their fault that this happened with their child. The mother is also strong and was able to hold out. The grandmother felt embarrassed after Jeongwon said all the things about the daughter.
JUNWAN: Changmin the patient passes away
Jun-wan has to update Chang-min’s mother that her child might not make it and doesn't have that much time left. Tells the family to be with Changmin in his final moments. While the parents were mourning, Dr Im was having a difficulty pronouncing the time of death. Junwan then caught him being unprofessional and tells the nurse to record the time. Im apologizes but Junwan says that its okay to cry. Doctors are humans too. Although reminds him that he needs to do his job no matter how emotional you get. It’s his job to make his call.
The group of friends talks about their mistakes from the past
The friends get together, the conversation turns into a discussion about being an intern and making mistakes. Particularly started with Ikjun and Jeongwon.
Seokhyeong raises how he explains to his students that it’s okay to show some emotions.
Episode 6 brings a soft reminder that yes the doctors have to be professional at all times although it is okay to cry at moments and make mistakes too because they are humans.

You stumbled on to the sofa in a bit of a daze, drawing the rug over you to keep the chill at bay. Your mind was screaming out in a dissonance of voices, all telling you different things at the same time, pushing you to go back to him, to ask him why didn’t he rid himself of a relationship that must have brought him nothing but hurt and pain? Why had he dragged this marriage all by himself for so long?
It was clear as day now- there was no other girl in Sam’s life. Only you. For all your incessant speculation, it had only ever been you.
“Y/N, you okay?”
Meg was next to you, her hand on your arm. “What happened?”
“I’m still married to him,” you whispered. “I’m still married to Sam. Meg-” you turned to her- “I thought he would’ve annulled the marriage. He had no reason to be bound to it. I left him high and dry. It’s the first thing he should’ve done- free himself… but… I saw his wedding ring. I can’t believe…”
Meg got up and walked to the fridge. You watched as she pulled out two beer bottles, opened them with her teeth and handed you one. She took a seat next to you, swinging her arm around your shoulder.
Slowly, you brought the bottle to your lips and took a swig. The cold bitterness of the beer was strangely comforting next to the warmth of your friend’s body. Meg didn’t utter a word. She drank from her own bottle, not easing the grip on your shoulder.
It was going to be a whole new challenge to face Sam now. Up until today you were simply happy that in Sam’s friendship, you were getting back crumbs of what you used to have. To know that he was still very much yours and yet not yours at all was very very painful. Wouldn’t you want to fling yourself at him the next time you saw him?
You wanted to ask Sam why he hadn’t severed the ties legally, but you didn’t think you had it in you. What would you say? So hey, Sam… remember when you loved me so much, but I left you anyway? Yeah, so why are we still married?
He’d kept his every promise, been faithful to you all along. You realised with a shock that you and Sam had been looking at the whole situation from two completely different angles. When you’d seen him in the lecture hall, a part of your past- one which you’d tried to bury very deep had resurfaced again. For him, he’d stepped into a generic lecture and found his wife staring down at him. It explained so much- Why he’d never been as lost to himself as you had been to yourself. You had resented his ability to smile, to be himself while you’d been a wreck all these years. Only now did you understand that the reason he had held on to himself was because he had never let go of you.
Silent tears rolled down cheeks as anger and disgust for yourself weighed you down.
“It’ll be alright,” Meg said in a low voice.
You took another swig, wondering if Sam will ever stop surprising you and knowing once again that you never deserved him.
*********************
“Bad night?” Madison was sympathetic.
You answered honestly, “It was my doing, I had it coming.”
“We’re almost to the end. You can sleep the exhaustion off.”
The two of you were sitting in the front row, waiting to be called up on the stage for the vote of thanks. It was relieving that the Induction fair had come to an end without any incidence- everything had gone as smoothly as you had planned and a lot of the alumni had come up to you to congratulate you for planning and managing it so well. You even had a couple of contact cards tucked in the pocket of your jacket, asking you to give them a call for the summer internship.
Madison was really impressed that you had offers. Summer internships were rare for first years, especially so without recommendations. She was sad for herself that Acton Griswold never broke the first year rule. You encouraged her to use her dad’s influence if it helped. It wasn’t like she would be taking someone else's place. She would only be creating one for herself. To be a good lawyer, one had to be pragmatic, you understood that very well and didn’t judge Madison for wanting to use all the resources at her disposal.
When it was time for the vote of thanks, you made it a point to thank all the speakers and hosts and then your team- each of the members individually for having your back. There had been some wonderful lectures and discussions. You might have been biased, but Sam’s had been the best- it was hopeful and inspiring. He’d looked great on the stage.
Afterwards, the committee had arranged a small lunch for the alumni still left, in one of the campus eateries. There was expensive alcohol and enticing music. A lot of people made their way to the center of the room and began dancing again, trying to revive the mood from last night. On your part, you were simply trying to avoid Sam. You could sense that he was trying to catch your eyes- probably to ask you why you had left so suddenly last evening. Luckily, he was a popular target and people kept going up to him to strike conversations.
You felt a hand on your shoulder, then another at your waist, making you jump back a step.
“Hey, it’s me!” Brad said with his usual arrogant grin.
“What’re you doing?”
“You promised me a dance, remember?”
You wanted to slap yourself for agreeing to it. “I didn’t promise anything.”
“Aw, don’t be like that,” he smirked. “You said one dance. Yesterday your guy didn’t leave you for a second and then you disappeared. At least, let me have one dance now?”
You knew from experience that he wouldn’t budge, so as annoying as it was, you put your hand on his shoulder- not to draw yourself closer to him, but to maintain a firm distance. If you were going to dance, it would be at your terms.
“Gee, I’m feeling very lucky today!”
“I can’t even dance.”
“That’s fine.” There it was again, the overconfidence. “Hey, listen. Me and the guys and some people from class are having a pool party this weekend. I’ll see you there, right?”
“I can’t. I’ll be working this weekend.”
He rolled his eyes. “I know you aren’t working. I checked the schedule at the library. So don’t even try to wiggle out of this one.”
“I don’t know why you won’t give up, Brad,” you sighed as you moved from side to side.
“Because I know one day you’ll say yes. No one’s ever said no to me… except you.”
“So this is about your ego?”
He snorted. “It’s because I really like you. At least, give it a shot. What’s stopping you?”
The fact that I don’t like you. At all. And oh, apparently, I’m married.
“I’m not interested in dating anyone,” you told him flatly.
Something in his eyes changed, they became darker, his jaw tensed. “Let me change your mind.” His hand pressed against the small of your back, bunching up in the fabric of your dress. The fingers resting against your shoulders dug into the skin. He leaned in quickly- before you could react- far too quickly.
Just as you braced yourself to push him away, another hand landed on your shoulder, right above Brad’s, yanking his fingers away none too gently.
“Y/N!” A cheerful voice exclaimed, pulling you right from Brad’s arms into his own.
“I’ve been looking for you everywhere,” said Chase Lincoln, with the sort of jovial outrage that comes only after years and years of friendship. “How dare you evade me like this, you frivolous wench!”
You were absolutely baffled; next to you, so was Brad.
Chase turned to give him a dismissive look. “I’m sorry, mate,” he said, not sounding sorry at all. “I have some business to settle with this girl, here. If you’ll excuse us.”
Without waiting for Brad to react, Chase whirled you away, single handedly managing to keep the both of you upright.
“I’m sorry, I don’t know what you mean,” you stuttered, as he spun you. His hands were light on your waist and in your hand- very respectable.
“Don’t say sorry,” he grinned. “I thought you were in a bit of a tight spot over there.”
“I was,” you breathed, still trying to keep up with his pace of dancing. You wanted to thank him for saving you from that, at the same time you didn't want to utter the words because you barely knew the man.
“Look-”
“Don’t thank me,” he cut you off. “It was the decent thing to do. Besides, my friend over there would have snapped a tendon or two, if I hadn’t.”
Chase jerked his head in the direction and you followed with your gaze to see Sam standing ramrod straight, hands balled into fists, jaw clenched. Even from this far away you could see he was coiled like a tight wire about to snap.
“He couldn’t intercede,” Chase said in a low voice. “And I couldn’t help but. Then there’s also the matter that I’ve been dying to get in a word with the lovely Mrs. Winchester. It’s not like Sam can come break us up either.”
Mrs. Winchester. The name resonated in your ears. If you hadn’t had all of the last miserable night to accept that fact, your legs might have just given out now.”
Chase laughed all of a sudden, the sound apologetic. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you or anything. You can ask me to get the hell lost and that would be that.”
“I don’t know what you want.”
At least, Chase wasn’t hurling abuses at her for ditching Sam.
“It’s nothing to do with Sam, actually,” he said. You noticed for the first time just how sharp his green eyes were. They gave you the feeling of being Xrayed. Not many people must be able to lie to him. “I have an offer for you.”
“An offer?”
“Yep. How would you like to come and work at Acton Griswold? It’s a great place to work in.”
You stared at him. “You’re kidding, right?”
“Wouldn’t dare.”
“I know Acton Gris doesn’t take first year interns.” Not even with recommendations.
Chase grinned. “Who’s talking about internships? Hell, no. You’ll be left with photo-copying and standing in café lines all day. I’m talking about actual work. I had the chance to go through your CV for the committee selection. Come work there as a part-time paralegal.”
“I wouldn’t fit in,” you mumbled. Chase’s words did not make any sense. You had no backing, neither were you naïve. You knew jobs like that had hundreds and hundreds of applications every week.
His eyes twinkled. “Trust me, you would. I could recommend you. I’m sure after more than two years of working there, I have enough pull.”
“Please, don’t.” Despite having asked Madison to use all the pull, you couldn’t bear the idea of someone doing it for you.
“Look, Sam told me that you helped him out with James’s case. I feel terrible about being swamped that day and not being there for him. Even his assistant, Stacey was on a leave. You saved that poor kid from jail.”
You hadn’t really done anything, and you told Chase that. His answering smile looked peaceful, like you had cleared some unknown test.
“Will you, at least, apply? I swear I won’t do anything to further your application. If you get in, it’ll be all you.” He hesitated before adding. “I won’t tell Sam if you don’t want me to.”
“Oh, no… it’s nothing like that. I don’t want to keep anything from him.” Not anymore.
Chase smiled. “Don’t worry, he’s too high up to be involved with the paralegals anyway. Word around the block is, they’re considering him for senior partner. He’d be the youngest in their history.”
You dropped your hands from around his shoulder, clapping them. “My God, that’s wonderful!” The grin spreading on your lips threatened to split your face. “I can’t think of anyone who would deserve it more.”
“That makes two of us.” Chase let go of you completely. “I’m glad he has someone who would be happy about his successes.”
That wiped the grin off of your face completely.
“He’s not the sort of guy who leaves people behind. When he left Johnson’s, he didn’t ditch Stacey, he brought her along… and me. I don’t think he has the ability to move on.”
The words felt heavy in the air between the two of you, and with Chase’s eyes boring into yours it was impossible to look away. He was imploring you to believe him.
He gave you his patented grin, one that said he was up to no good. “And unlike your college here, Acton Gris has no policy against fraternizing. I’ll see you around, Y/N!” Chase nodded and backed away, leaving you standing there wondering what the hell had just happened.
*********************
Sam hurriedly cleared his desk, in an effort to get out soon. Sundays were strictly reserved for Max… It’s a rule he didn’t break, Induction fairs notwithstanding. Those were mandatory for him as a faculty member.
So much for him dreading the Induction fair because it would be boring. Sam should have known nothing with Y/N could be even remotely disinteresting. In the past weekend, he’d oscillated from the nervousness of a teenager to a piercing hope. Today, he’d almost had a coronary.
Sam knew it was wrong. God, he knew it was wrong to want to punch a guy- especially a student! But he’d been touching Y/N… when she didn’t want to be touched. Sam could have sworn, that guy had leaned in with the intention of kissing her. He was almost sure. God bless Chase’s soul for jumping in when he did.
Chase had drawn her in his arms gently, and then turned to throw Sam a wink. Chase was the best wingman when he wanted to be one.
Then there was the new anxiety of having Chase with her. Y/N- she wasn’t like other people. She felt things too deeply and Chase didn’t know that. What if he said anything that unconsciously hurt her… or accidentally mentioned Max or something from Sam’s past? As it is the way she’d left yesterday had Sam on edge.
Abruptly Y/N grinned and Chased bowed just a bit. Sam’s whole body relaxed.
He turned around and headed back to his office in the Law building. Standing there, watching Y/N was only drawing him thin. There were still a few papers he needed to grade and then get back to Max as soon as possible.
Not for the first time, Sam was grateful for Max. In all this mess, his kid kept him tethered. Sam would have gone off the orbit and done something stupid regarding Y/N. But one thought of Max and he was grounded back to reality. Max was his first priority… not that the kid was making it any easy for him lately.
Sam had seen him looking at Y/N’s photo again last night. The picture, one of her standing by the balcony, was taken a few days after her first acceptance. She was smiling down at Dean who was mowing the lawn and Sam had clicked the moment unbeknownst to her. She looked gorgeous. Sam couldn’t bear to see it everyday, so the picture had remained in the first drawer of his bedside table. In his moments of weakness, he could hold on to it and remind himself, something that pure had been his once.
A flimsy material caught Sam’s attention as he shut his desk drawer. Y/N’s scarf from last night. He hadn’t taken it home with him, choosing to leave it.
Maybe he could drop it at her place on his way home. That would be an innocent reason, right? He could ask her what was up with her yesterday. Y/N had been miffed at Sam for not seeing her in the library often. That meant not meeting him must be a bad thing for her. Sam was more excited about the prospect of returning her scarf than he was about most things in his life.
The door to Sam’s office sprang open, making him look up in surprise.
Y/N’s roommate, Meg, was standing at the door, her face a mask of contempt.
“Meg,” he said, surprised.
“Didn’t expect me, did you?”
Her hostile sneer would have tipped him off, had Sam not been riding the high if getting to see Y/N.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t,” he said. “Please, take a seat.”
“Cut out your bullshit, Winchester,” she spat, coming up to him. “What do you think you’re doing making Y/N’s life miserable like that?”
Sam couldn’t understand. “What… what do you mean?”
“Don’t,” she hissed. “Don’t you dare act like you don’t know anything. Every time she meets you, Y/N’s a wreck. When she found out you were the one who got her home that night… she was besides herself. I’ve never seen her so terrified or more out of her element. And I don’t know what the fuck you did to her last night, but she couldn’t stop crying.”
Meg took another step forward. “You think it’s so cool dragging her along with you like this? Why don’t you set her free? Or are you that much of a sadist to see her suffer day in and day out?”
“Suffer?” He repeated dully.
“When I first saw her, Y/N looked dead,” Meg said, fury in each word. “Her eyes were sunken and her cheeks were hollowed. When she laughed for the first time, it sounded hysterical, like she’d forgotten how to do it. Hell, her skin stretched over her bones even when she smiled. I’ve seen her struggle day after day trying to get a hold on herself, learn how to be happy again… and if you mess that up, Winchester, I swear I’ll smash your face in.”
Sam knew he should say something back, anything, but the picture that Meg had painted was too painful… a hollow Y/N, the one that had left him in the hospital. If she’d been the same when she moved in with Meg, how many years had she suffered at the stake of such mind numbing agony? And yet, he had seen life behind her eyes… he’d seen her happy, smiling…
“I don’t know what you did to her all those years ago,” she continued, her voice like ice. “Y/N wouldn’t say, but I know it was enough to kill a part of her. And I know somehow it was your fault.”
“Did she say that? Did Y/N say it was because of me?”
“No!” She spat, frustrated. “I don’t know why she can’t see what you’re doing to her. I can. You’re a slow seeping poison. Just leave her alone. Y/N was happy before you decided to come back and wreck her life again. Set her free.”
Something was choking Sam’s breath, words just wouldn’t come out. Was he keeping her from happiness? Was that why she had fled last night?
Meg jabbed a finger in his direction. “Remember.”
She turned on her heel and was almost out of the door when Sam managed to croak, “Meg-”
Meg looked over her shoulder.
With numb legs Sam made his way to her. “Take this with you,” he said, handing her the scarf with shaking hands. “It’s Y/N’s. She gave it to me yesterday. It would be best if you give it back to her.”
Meg snatched the scarf from him and then with one last look of derision, stormed out.
All Sam could do was fall in his chair, hands raking through his hair. What had he been thinking? What had been playing at? As if there was any chance in the world that he wouldn’t remind Y/N of what she had lost. Of course she was hurting and it was his damn fault, because he thought they could be friends again, because he hoped it could ever lead to anything more.
And there was always Max to think of. Right in front of his eyes the flimsy dream he had brought to life collapsed in a heap of shattered glass. Maybe in a parallel reality somewhere, Y/N would be in his life, Max would be their son and everything would be perfect. This was not that world. Here, Sam was sentenced to live out his life by himself and he’d be damned if let Y/N get hurt because of him again.

Part one: https://another-sonic-blog.tumblr.com/post/618876056624054272/how-about-one-where-amy-discovers-shadow-in-stasis
This chapter's synopsis: After waking up Shadow from stasis, Amy and the black hedgehog spend some time together before going to see the Federal Reservation Bank, home to a Chaos Emerald. However, the longer Shadow spends time with Amy the more he realizes that he is having conflicted feelings about destroying Earth. This leads him to a final resolution.
ShadAmy (Platonic/Romantic it's up to you)

.
The sun began to rise as it helped the sky decorate its blue canvas with soft pastel colors. Flowers bloomed as they began to be touched by sunlight, they detached a sweet aroma that could even be smelled by the unskilled nose.
Shadow the Hedgehog looked outside the window from Amy's apartment where he could see people coming out of their houses, ready to start a new day. There was a new unknown feeling that was taking over his body. He wasn't tense, his body completely relaxed and although he didn't sleep he didn't feel tired ... He was at a complete state of tranquility. Something that he wasn't used to since leaving in the Space Colony ARK. Constant test, needles coming in and out of him, Xrays, and overexerting his body in every possible way was an everyday item to him. Although there were very loving and caring scientists at the ARK, not everyone was. Must of them saw Shadow for the living weapon that he was, nothing more and nothing less. Even Professor Gerald Robotnik saw him as such but instead of a weapon, he saw Shadow as a cure. The Ultimate Life Form, his body was perfect in every sense of the world. Undefeatable.
All the power in the world and he couldn't save the only person he truly cared for.
The black hedgehog looked at the people walking underneath him. So small and fragile but still a smile plastered on their faces. How could they be happy when their race only seeks for destruction? How can they be happy when they can only feel hate towards each other? Humanity was rotten from the very pinnacle of its core and Shadow wanted nothing more but its demise.
How can they be happy when they took away the person he loved the most?
Even with the pain, hate, and suffering inside of him ... Shadow didn't want to do it. He didn't want to destroy this pathetic planet but ...
He will do it.
The promise he made to Maria is more important than Shadow's conflicted feelings. Maria wanted revenge and for all that's sacred, Shadow was going to give it to her.
"Shadow?"
His moment of rage was broken as Shadow heard the sleepy voice of the pink hedgehog who opened the doors of her house to him. Shadow reminded himself that he shouldn't get attached to anyone, especially Amy who seemed to have her way into people's hearts ... quiet easily. However, Shadow couldn't deny that the pink hedgehog has come in handy to him. She cooks for him, gives him a roof and-
"Are you alright? Did you sleep?"'
She gives him company.
Something he didn't need nor want but it was greatly appreciated. It was going to be complicated to destroy the world she seemed to love so much, Amy will probably hate him when she finds out ... if she ever does. Shadow will try to keep the destruction of the world a secret for as long as he can. At least until he makes sure Amy is safe at the ARK and that's if she wants to come along with him.
"You know that I don't need to sleep," Shadow said still looking outside the window. A heavy sigh left Shadow's lips as if he was letting out all the anger that built up inside of him just a few moments ago. Once again he felt tranquil. "I'll be fine ... soon enough."
There were a lot of moments in which Amy questioned Shadow and if she was being completely honest there was doubt within her. The pink one knew that Shadow was hiding something. However, she decided to let the feeling go. He was just a mysterious hedgehog who wanted to go home, nothing wrong with that. Amy could trust him and she will.
"I'll cook something and then we can go to the Federal Reserve Bank of Capital City." Amy walked towards the black hedgehog. Again, she could notice that same sad look. Full of anger,  pain ... If there was a way Amy could console him, she would. But how? There was a wall around him, one where there was no way she could climb up nor go underneath. Nonetheless, she was stubborn as well. It didn't matter how long nor how many hits it took, she was going to break down Shadow's wall.
Federal Reserve Bank?" Shadow asked this time he was facing the pink hedgehog.
"That's where the Chaos Emerald is."
.
.
.
Shadow thought that it was just a matter of eating breakfast and getting to the place where the Chaos Emerald is located. However, it seemed like the pink hedgehog had other things in mind. She took him to places that he only had seen in magazines and books back at the ARK. Places that Maria always wanted to visit.
"When I get better we definitely need to go to a shopping center! I wanna buy cute clothes and ice cream!"
"Shadow, once we go down to Earth we should go to a park! It would be nice to race against you!"
Something was screaming in Shadow's mind, telling him to tell the pink lady to stop playing around. What surprised him the most was his level of patience, he was supposed to be completing his plan to destroy the world but instead here he was. Following a pink girl around to sightsee.
It was late afternoon now, the sun once again helps paint the blue sky with pastel colors. The only difference was this time the color palette was darker. Purples and blues showed up and Shadow mentally smacked his forehead already disappointed that he might lose this day.
Maybe he could sneak outside during the night while Amy is asleep. But what if she wakes up and doesn't find him? Will she suspect him?
And what if she does? What does that matter to him? Shadow needed to continue his plan to destroy the world, that was the only thing that mattered to him now.
"Are you enjoying yourself Shadow?" Amy asked as she looked over at the black hedgehog with a smile on herself.
"No."
"Oh ..."
Chaos gracious, Shadow doesn't even know where to start with this one. He regretted being so upfront with her even if he was speaking up his real feelings.
"My apologies, it's just that I am desperate to get a Chaos Emeralds."
Although Shadow wasn't looking directly at the people, he felt the presence of humans passing by them. Some looked, some didn't care and to be fully honest Shadow never thought he would be walking around with humans as normal as this. On the vast streets that were filled with cars, cafes, restaurants, lights, and all of these mechanical things he quite didn't understand ... yet. He was never fond of the loud sounds but this was quite amusing to him.
"No, I am sorry," Amy said. "I know you want to get home and to do that you need the Chaos Emerald but ... I don't know I just thought that maybe you would like to sightsee before you go? I also wanted to spend some time with you before we parted ways ..."
When Amy says things like this, it becomes more complicated for him to think of the destruction of the Earth. His need to protect her increased to levels that even worried him. Now it wasn't a matter of Amy wanting to come along with him to the ARK. It was as if Shadow needed her to come with him.
No, he can't let those feelings take over him. He can't get attached and he shouldn't. Not after what the world has already taken from him.
"Yes, I need to go home but that doesn't mean my journey with you ends once I get the Chaos Emerald." Shadow looked over to Amy who was walking next to him, a bit too close for his comfort but at the moment he didn't mind. "I still need to help you find your friend, remember?"
"Oh, you are right!" Amy said, a bit surprised. "Thank you Shadow, most of the time I am left behind ... So, I thought that maybe you would do the same."
This time a sad smile was placed on her face. As if Amy was remembering a nostalgic memory, maybe someone who she was found off mixed with a sad memory. Anger suddenly began to rise within the black hedgehog. Whoever dared to leave behind such a kind-hearted person like Amy was an awful creature.
However, the rosette hedgehog was back to her bubbly self. She smiled the brightest that she could and looked at Shadow with her Emerald eyes.
"But I know you won't do that to me right, Shadow?" Amy asked.
This was becoming difficult. Way too difficult. Shadow was once again conflicted with his feelings, he shouldn't care much about this girl but still he does.
"No, I won't," Shadow said and really meant it ...
So then, why did Shadow felt like he was lying?
.
.
.
The Federal Reserve Bank was one of the most secure places in Capital City, may even in the whole world. A great facility, robots, guns, lasers, soldiers, nothing that Shadow couldn't handle.
Amy and Shadow were a few meters away from it as to Shadow's request. Although the facility was on the outskirts of the city, it was still very concurred by people, especially G.U.N. agents. Shadow knew that it was better to keep his distance now.
"I have a friend who works for the government, I think we can ask her to help us convince them to lend us the Chaos Emerald-"
Amy's voice was cut off as an explosion was heard on the Federal Reserve Bank. The gates that were surrounding the facility were no longer there and Amy immediately recognized the person behind this.
"That's Dr. Eggman!" Amy said to Shadow. "I have to stop him! He must be after the Chaos Emerald."
They were hiding behind some bushes where there was not a possibility of them being detected. Amy looked at the facility once again, determination on her eyes. Maybe this time she could prove to Sonic that she could be useful.
"Who is this Dr. Eggman?" Shadow asked, trying to get Amy's attention so her mindset would move away from entering the facility.
"He is a villain. Dr. Eggman is always trying to conquer the world and he is always after the Chaos Emeralds." Amy said. "I wonder what does he need them for now."
"This information can come in handy later on."
A quick thought crossed his mind. This was it, the means as to how to start his plans. But first he needed to do something.
"I need you to go back home, I got this. I'll stop him by myself-"
"No."
Shadow quickly interrupted, Amy had such a determination on her face that could intimidate anyone ... but him.
"I don't like being left behind Shadow and I won't leave you alone either," Amy said. "He can hurt you, what if you need me to protect you?"
"From what I remember I was the one who protected you from that guard of robots a few days ago."
"And? I still helped you get out! I can take care of myself."
.
"I can take care of myself!" Maria caught the red ball with her hands, an angry look placed on her face. "I want to play too!"
"Dear, even if you feel good that doesn't mean that you are." One of the scientists approached the blond one, trying to provide her with some comfort. "But your health is very delicate, one small agitation and may end up in the infirmary again ... You don't want that do you?"
"But I want to play with Shadow!" Maria said.
"Shadow is very strong, he may even hurt you if he were to throw that ball."
The black hedgehog watched from afar, a bit sad that his best friend wasn't able to play with him the activities that he enjoyed.
"Don't worry Maria," Shadow approached her, a delicate and comforting voice coming from him. "We can read a book or do a puzzle if you want."
.
Even when Shadow tried not to compare Amy to Maria, there was an evident share of personalities within the two. This brought back a faint memory, one that he wished he could relive again.
"I know you can take care of your self," Shadow's voice changed and this took the pink one by surprise. "I don't want you to come with me ... because I don't want you to get hurt."
Shadow the Hedgehog was the Ultimate Life Form but even he had failed to protect the one he cared for the most. His failure was something that will always hunt him in the form of insecurity. He was the Ultimate Life Form and he failed to protect a little girl. Who is he to say that the same thing won't happen to Amy? What if he can't protect her? What if he can't be there when she needs him?
"It's not like I don't trust your abilities ..." Shadow made a pause as he took a moment to appreciate Amy's emerald eyes. "It's more like I don't trust myself to protect you if need me to."
There it was again, that sadness, that painful look. There was a reason behind his insecurity and although Amy wanted to know why she knew she couldn't do that at the moment. Just what had happed to Shadow that made him be this insecure about himself? Heck, Amy was utterly impressed when she saw him destroy that guard of robots back at Prison Island. He had unique and amazing abilities ... but even he had his insecurities.
"Will you be back by dinner?"
Maybe, she was finally understanding the black hedgehog. Amy now knew that she wouldn't be able to break down the wall that Shadow had built up around him no matter how much she tried to destroy it. It was a matter of giving Shadow time, space, and understanding ... And that way maybe ... He would be the one to destroy his wall.
The dark hedgehog gave Amy a small smirk, one that pierced through the pink hedgehog's heart. Hopefully, she would be there to see more of that enchanting smile.
"I'll try my best," Shadow replied.
"You will come back, right?"
Almost like plead, Shadow's heart begged him to not stay away from the pink hedgehog. To forget everything and to not destroy the planet that Amy seemed to love so much.
But he couldn't. Shadow had made a promise to the most important person in the universe, to Maria ... and he always keeps his promises.
"I promise."
.
.
.
Obtaining the Chaos Emerald was too easy. The black and red striped hedgehog even felt a little bit guilty that he took down every single agent and robot at the facility. In his hands now was a green Chaos Emerald.
"It all starts with this ... A jewel containing the ultimate power," For a moment, Shadow was lost in the beauty of the green Chaos Emerald. How could something so small be so beautiful yet powerful? In a sense, the Chaos Emerald reminded him of someone he knew.
"You rat! What do you think you are doing with my Chaos Emerald?"
Although Shadow didn't recognize the voice, he wasn't scared of it much less intimidated by it. There was complete silence between them. The only thing surrounding them was the metal room in which Shadow had stolen the Chaos Emerald. Slowly, he turned around coming face to face with the so-called Dr. Eggman.
"My name is Shadow, I am one of Gerald Robotnik's greatest creation ... The Ultimate Life Form." Shadow said. "It's an honor to finally meet you, Doctor."
Although Dr. Eggman was surprised that this black hedgehog knew his grandfather's name, thanks to his great thinking abilities he was putting all the pieces together.
"You are the military's top-secret weapon! The one that the military shut down the research because they feared it!" Eggman said on top of his robot. Shadow had to admit the whole scene was comical even. He could tell why Amy called him Eggman but if the black hedgehog wanted the human to do as he pleases, it was better to not say that nickname.
"A few days ago I found my grandfather's old research files and dairy. He wrote about the greatest weapon he has ever created ... Project Shadow," Eggman was still keeping his distance, not knowing how dangerous could this hedgehog be. "I was looking for you in Prison Island, just to find that you were no longer there ... How did you even escape?"
That was something that Shadow didn't dare to say. He didn't want to involve Amy in any way into his devilish plans. He decided to ignore his question and instead focused on the information that was given to him.
"Because you are the grandchild of my creator, I'll grant you one wish," Shadow said. "Bring more Chaos Emeralds."
"Shadow wait!"
"I'll be waiting for you in the central control room on the space colony, ARK."
.
.
.
Shadow was enjoying this too much. The police, soldiers, agents, everyone was after him. Although he could easily use Chaos Control, a part of him wanted himself to be known to the world. Shadow wanted this planet to know that he was here, that they should start to feel despair, pain, and suffering just like he felt it. Just like he was feeling it.
Destroying the Federal Reserve Bank brought him a certain pleasure, was this what revenge felt like? If he was being completely honest, it was quite lovely.
Standing proud of at the tallest bridge of Capital City, Shadow the Hedgehog looked down on the humans. So small, so weak and pathetic and they still managed to outsmart the ultimate life form 50 years ago in the ARK.
The sounds of police sirens and helicopters around him made Shadow smile, did they really think their machines are good enough to stop him?
"Hmf ... How pathetic ..." The words left his mouth but as soon as they did, he remembered what had happened on the ARK. Yes, he was the Ultimate Life Form. However, he shouldn't let that fact make him underestimate the humans. They were more deadly than they looked.
.
"Find them before they escape!"
Shadow did everything he could so Maria's small hand didn't slip away from his. Her breathing was becoming more agitated, and Shadow feared that her weak lungs would explode at any moment.
Gunshots were heard and without noticing Maria had been shot right in front of him. Everything happened so fast that Shadow didn't know how to react, what to do. He had been trained to be many things, a weapon, a cure ... but Shadow had never learned how to be a savior ... A hero.
"Maria!"
In the next moment, he was trapped. A crystal capsule surrounded him and Shadow was again lost. He couldn't do anything. The black hedgehog only stood there, watching his only family bleeding to death. Maria sacrificed herself to save him, to put him to safety. Shadow was supposed to be the one to save her. After all, he was her hope all along for a happy and normal life on Earth.
"Shadow, I beg of you ... Please do it for me."
"Maria!"
"For all the people ... on that planet ..."
No matter how much Shadow screamed her name, she wouldn't listen. The Ultimate Life Form was reduced to helplessness. To nothing, he just wanted this nightmare to end. For Chaos, for everything sacred in this universe ... He swore to never sleep again if that meant he will never have this nightmare.
"Sayonara ... Shadow the Hedgehog."
.
He couldn't do anything back then. But now, Shadow was going to do anything in his power to get revenge. Nothing else crossed his mind, although the memory of the pink hedgehog wanted to make its way trough. He suppressed the thought, knowing that if he let his mind go to Amy the sudden rage of destroying everything will disappear. The black hedgehog didn't need that right now, all he needed at the moment, was anger, rage, and determination.
Starting right this moment, he didn't care about anyone or anything. He will seek destruction, he will full fill his promise. Shadow will make everyone feel the pain, the suffering, the no-ending nightmare that was his life.
Just how dare they? How dare these humans walk away as if nothing happened? Like they just didn't destroy his whole universe? His purpose to live?
These were the same thoughts he was having early this morning until a sweet voice interrupted him.
Amy made him have second thoughts and doubts about destroying the world.
But she wasn't here now to remind him of that.
"Maria, I still remember what I promised you, for the people of this planet ... I promise you ... Revenge!"

The dark hedgehog had already finished defeating the guars of the military that was after him. It didn't take him long and his satisfaction was short-lived, therefore he decided to go downtown where he could cause a little more of despair within the population. He looked around the city, sightly enjoying the lights and how perfectly they illuminated the city.
Suddenly, something caught his attention. It wasn't the tall buildings, nor restaurants nor how there were no people at the moment.
It was a blue hedgehog, who was fighting a G.U.N robot. It was pretty big and Shadow would have liked to take down that robot as well but seeing that the blue hedgehog was almost done with, he decided to not interfere. Shadow had to admit that the blue hedgehog had good skills for the regular Mobian. Watching from the rooftop of a close-by building, Shadow thought that maybe this could turn out to be an interesting fight.
The black hedgehog landed on top of G.U.N's robot as he threw the Chaos Emerald up and down, playing with it to get the blue hedgehog's attention.
"Now, I know what's going on!" the blue hedgehog said as he approached Shadow, looking directly up at him. "The military has mistaken me for the likes of you!"
Shadow reminds quiet, it was amusing to see that the blue one had the guts to face him. The black hedgehog wanted a fight but he didn't think it was going to be that easy.
"So, where do you think you're going with that Emerald?!" The blue hedgehog raised his voice, tired that Shadow wasn't saying a word. He began to run this time. "Say something! You fake hedgehog!"
"Well, let's play."
Throwing up the Chaos Emerald and then catching it, Shadow only said two words.
"Chaos Control!"
Greenlight eradiated from the Chaos Emerald and Shadow felt his whole body go through an energy shock. It was a sensation that was long forgotten but it wasn't uncomfortable. In the next moment, there he was up close to the blue hedgehog.
For a moment, everything went in slow motion. Blue met black as they crossed next to each other, Shadow finally took a good look on Sonic's features. He was just a regular blue hedgehog, but his green eyes remind him of someone.
Amy's emerald eyes.
"Damn it, I forgot! I promised her I was going to be back!"
Shadow mentally face palmed himself, he felt so stupid for letting his uncontrolled emotions take over him so easily.
"And tragically, I didn't make it for dinner either."
Shadow decided to teleport back to the top of the building where he could see again the blue hedgehog. Why did he even think this was a good idea? He was just wasting time.
"Wow ... he's fast!" The blue one said. "But wait ... Its not speed! He must be using the Chaos Emerald to warp!"
Oh, well at least the blue one offered him some type of entertainment. The least he could do was to introduce himself before he goes off to Amy's apartment.
"My name is Shadow, I'm the world's ultimate life form." The black hedgehog was once again playing with the green Chaos Emerald, mocking the inability of the blue hedgehog. "There's no time for games ... Farewell."
Shadow used the Chaos Emerald to create a great amount of energy, it was so bright that it blinded Sonic for the moment.
"Shadow ... What is he?"
And then he was gone.
"I better investigate this ... Just after months of not seeing Amy and Tails ... I come back to the city to see them and this happens-"
"Don't move! Stay where you are! Keep your hands up in the air!"
Sonic's thoughts were interrupted as in few seconds, the blue blur was surrounded by G.U.N's trucks, soldiers, and helicopters.
"Huh? Not again!"
.

.
Like a teenager coming back from a party that he wasn't supposed to go, Shadow entered Amy's apartment through the living room's window.
He tried to be quiet but of course the pink hedgehog was waiting for him. Amy was wearing her pink pajamas, messy hair, and tired eyes. She was sitting on the couch, in front of a small table. On top of it, a plate of food was wrapped with plastic paper, Shadow could tell the food was long cold.
But his heart wasn't.
Far from it, actually.
"My apologies, were you waiting for me?"
Shadow was finally inside the apartment, his voice was soft. For a small moment, he looked over to the lamp that lightly illuminated the room, giving him enough light to see Amy. "Have you eaten?"
"Yes."
Growl
As if destiny wanted to prove Amy wrong, her stomach let out a loud growl, showing that she hasn't eaten anything since she last saw Shadow.
"I wanted to eat with you," Amy defended herself. A bit shy and embarrassed that Shadow watched her being this vulnerable. "How did it go? Did you defeat Eggman?"
Shadow nodded, he watched Amy stand up from the couch. The pink lady slowly walked towards him where she could see him better thanks to the moonlight coming from outside the window. Shadow's vermillion eyes glowed even brighter. The first time Amy saw his eyes, they were a bit terrifying. But now, she found a strange sense of comfort within them. Red pools that wanted to say so much, but couldn't.
"Did you get the Chaos Emerald?"
"Yes,"
"Are you going home now?"
"...Yes."
Amy's heart shrunk a little when he accepted it. They had been together for a couple of days but they had built a special bond. She knew this won't be the last time she would see him ... So, why does she feels like this?
"I need to go home but I'll come back to you when the time is right."
Even for Shadow, it was hard to say those words. But why? His heart stopped beating as he watched Amy's face change.
It was as if she knew everything, about his past. About his plan to destroy the Earth, about his dark thoughts.
But her face showed such calmness, such softness ... It wasn't pitying, it was compassion.
She was giving him comfort, without Amy knowing it.
"I'll be here whenever you need me,"
This time, Amy smiled. She knew that Shadow needed to follow his journey and to discover himself on his own. However, if there was any way she could help, then she would make it clear that she would be here for him. No matter what.
"Would you ... Would you really be here?"
Amy couldn't tell all too well, but she knew that his voice had cracked. His voice was filled with such grief that Amy herself felt like crying. That insecurity was showing up again in Shadow and this time it was breaking him. His voice was a quiet plead. He was like a sinner seeking forgiveness, like a vagabond seeking a home.
"Yes, I'll be here ... I promise."
The rosette hedgehog was something or rather say someone who Shadow has been looking for since the day Maria died. Something that he thought he lost forever. He had only known the pink hedgehog for a couple of days but she had shown him so much. She offered him such unconditional sentiment and comfort that made his heart feel at peace.
But was that enough to forget a promise?
No.
"When I come back, I'll help you find your friend. How does this individual look like?"
"No need. Honestly, he must be traveling somewhere. I have my ways of finding him, so don't worry about that," the pink lady was getting closer to Shadow but now he didn't mind the closeness of it at all. "Besides, something tells me that you have more important things to do that to help me find Sonic."
The black hedgehog still wonders who was this person who seemed to be so important to the pink one. Why would anyone want to be away from her? When all that Shadow wanted to do was to be close to her?
"I'll come back soon enough, don't get in any trouble alright?" Shadow took one last good look at Amy, fully appreciating her soft features. Nonetheless, his eyes landed on hers. How come he didn't notice earlier? Amy's green emerald eyes were even more beautiful than the Chaos Emerald he was hiding.
"No promises!" Amy said playfully as Shadow walked towards the window, ready to disappear into the distance.
Although his heart was begging him to not leave, he knew that this was for the better. He needed to figure out things by himself and hopefully, he could get rid of the strange feeling that was starting to make its way into his heart.
"I'll come back," Shadow said. What the black hedgehog didn't know was that he would see Amy soon enough, in a circumstance he wished Amy wouldn't see him in.
"I know," Amy gives him a reassuring smile, one that made his heart and soul feel ... tranquil.
"You promised me."

A/N: The hardest part of this chapter was the ending. It took me a very long time to figure out how this conversation. Shadow, a lost, suffering soul ... and Amy, an idealist who sees the best in everyone. I guess I really wanted to show Shadow's mains traits in this chapter. His determination, insecurity, and caring side. No matter how much he tries to not let 'superficial' feelings get to him, he always ends up caring for others. He does not want to destroy the planet earth, but he is still going to do it because he 'promised' it to Maria. I wanted to show Shadow's inner conflict and how much that affects him. He is going to have his lows on this story but you all know how it's gonna end. I am really trying to stay 'in character' for these two. This won't be your super 'mushy lovey-dovey fanfiction story.' This story is going to be more like 'the reasons why Shadow and Amy have such great potential as a couple, romantic and non-romantic'. I want to highlight both characters' traits, weaknesses, and strengths as I give a new approach to this iconic story.
Also, I just realized that Sonic never introduces himself to Shadow but after they are at the ARK racing each other. So, if I can I'll have Shadow at the end be like 'Oh, so you are the hedgehog Amy is looking for!"
On the side note, I am already preparing for the big ANGST moment. Well, two main angst moments, I am sure you can figure the two moments out. I honestly can't wait for all of you to read it.
I want this story to be around 10 chapters long. But, it may be more or less. It all really depends on how much I can make out of the SA2 story. I'll be pulling out things from the hero and dark stories to finish this.
Anyways, that's all I have to say for now. I think, lol.
See you next time on Prison Island!

I was over half an hour late to my very first in-person class of the semester today.
I was stuck on a road that literally takes less than a minute to drive down for 20 minutes. I emailed the professor about 10 minutes in to explain.
When I finally got there, the elevator was out. The heat index is 100(F) today. I don't sweat. It's still a long walk from my disability parking spot to my building. So I couldn't take the stairs.
So it took about another 20 minutes, as I notified the person that runs the office that the elevator was out and she called for a technician immediately since I needed it to get to class.
She asked, "So what did you do to your leg?" (because I had my cane). And I responded, "Legs are fine, my heart's not." It's a gross oversimplification of my health situation, but it gets the most important point across.
That garnered much pity and doting. They talked about driving me to the building from my car in a golf cart while it's hot like this. She recommended I talk to the disability services office to see if there was anything that could be done to help me get to my classes.
I said I don't think there's anything else that can be done but I would reach out. So I did. The disability office was also overly sweet to me. They are just putting in a work order for the elevator, but that doesn't need to be done anymore because it was just fixed. There's nothing else they can do, I understand.
So every now and then, the elevator is going to be out (it happens often), and I'll just let them know, and I'll be late for class if I can't climb stairs that day. That's just the way it's gonna be.
And my professor is super understanding.
Everyone today was very n ice and understanding. I'm glad, but I'm also embarrassed. And I wish that my doctors had the said compassion.
In my car, it's painful to use my parking brake and to put it in reverse and drive (it's an automatic, thankfully). I hadn't foreseen that problem because Aaron has been doing all of the driving, but now I need to get myself to and from class.
But I have nothing in the works to help me with this kind of thing. Still no one has looked at my xrays from February with me, though I've asked repeatedly. No one is suggesting an MRI or anything. I just don't get it.
But I'm angry, which is good, because that will help me get through the anxiety of talking to my doctor over and over again about the next steps we should take. Physical therapy made me worse. What's next? Something needs to be next.
And I need some damn braces. My doctor doesn't want me using a cane or anything because "I'll depend on them too much and get worse." That doesn't make any fucking sense.
Nothing is being done to help me with my POTS. So I'm using a cane. Get me some fucking treatment, and maybe I won't need the cane.
I need a brace for my wrist to help with certain cooking tasks, and I need finger braces for other cooking tasks. Get me some proper physical therapy to help me not need those things, or give me the aids.
Fuck.

This video is for science geeks and history nerds both. It tells about the Antikythera mechanism, the world's first analog computer found in a 2100-year-old Roman shipwreck. It is a Greek device made of bronze which calculates with precision the positions of the planets and the stars based on the 19-year lunar cycle. It caused a revolution in the way we look at ancient technology.
What makes this amazing is the story of how it was deciphered. A man who owned a xray imaging company was approached by a mathematician from Yale who had seen some of his images of sea creatures. He was about to tell the professor that he couldn’t do it when the he was struck by the science of the project. He wound up nearly bankrupting his company to custom design a imaging machine to examine the ancient computer in a synthesis of industry and pure research.
I found it fascinating and a good escape from politics. 50 minutes.
