U is for @underpressurepodcast!
Dr MacMillan-Barrie takes up a humanities residency on the Amphitrite, an underwater research station. Not only does the crew have to deal with threats outside of the station in the ocean, there are also the difficulties of interpersonal relationships in a confined space.

if spotify could kindly meet me behind the bleachers so we can fight, that’d be great. once again not notifying me when a new episode of @keepitsteadypod is out until a full month after it’s released is a crime. and not the fun kind

Keep it Steady
Here's another obscure queer audio drama: Keep it Steady from Jessica Best (Unwell, The Strange Case of Starship Iris) and Procyon Podcast Network.
The summary, from the official website:
"Seventeen-year-old Zach is not a moral crusader. He's a snarky, well-liked stoner who attends detention about as often as Algebra. Unfortunately, he's also a closeted bisexual in 2005, in a town where even the potheads are conservatives. When school firebrand Gabe suggests they pretend to date in order to take the heat off two female students who are actually in love, Zach knows it's the worst idea he's ever heard. Then he does it anyway."
The first clever thing Keep it Steady does is structure the opening of the show as a Columbus High morning announcement. A perky female voice informs the listener of the date, content warnings and what events are going on in Columbus High. It's a clever way to ground the show in time and location, as well as provide necessary content warnings.
The personality of protagonist Zach is established very early on in the show. Voice actor Ashton Reid does an excellent job conveying both Zach's snarky stoner persona and his dramatic, self-aware, tired narration. It is a delight to listen to him engage with and begin to understand Gabe, whose zealotry conceals a more nuanced character.
If you were looking for a feel-good take on the fake-dating trope, this isn't it. The writers have kept the 2005 homophobia, as well as high school bullying. Zach's parents are conspicuously absent, but his home is frequently occupied by his friend and her younger brother fleeing their parent's house. The tension is masterfully engaging, I stayed on the train for a few extra stops just to keep listening.
Keep It Steady's sound is not the highest quality, and the dialogue sometimes lags, but the strong story and sympathetic characters eclipse those faults. The intimate moments in this show feel genuine and during the sunny moments I could not help but laugh along.
Three episodes in, I'm desperate to discover what transformed Zach from a academically successful theatre geek to into a person who failed freshman year and everyone assumes is high.
I'm very excited for more of Keep it Steady to be released.
Please listen to the show on your podcasting platform of choice or visit https://www.procyonpodcastnetwork.com/keep-it-steady for more information and episode transcripts.

This is a kind of weird question, I know, especially because networks are fluid (I don't entirely know what they do besides advertising). Like, Adventures in New America and It Makes A Sound used to be part of Night Vale Presents, but now NVP seems to be nearly entirely made up of shows by the WtNV crew. Mischa Stanton helped found The Whisperforge, but now their podcasts aren't part of it. Meanwhile Hi Nay has recently joined Rusty Quill and its feed still works, but when Midst joined Critical Role they took down their feed and website and started new ones of both.

For this weeks fiction podcast rec thursday:
Under Pressure
Tumblr media
[ID. The cover art of Under Pressure. It shows a grey metal wall with a porthole. The outside of the porthole is the dark blue ocean with three, almost invisible, tentacles coming from the bottom left side of the hole. In front of the hole, in red text it reads “Under Pressure.” Underneath that in a slightly different font and smaller font it reads “Created by Margaret Clark.” ./End ID]
Summary as given, “In the wake of personal tragedy, Dr Jamie MacMillan-Barrie forgoes a future in academia is favor of an uncertain future in the form of an humanities residency aboard the Amphitrite, a deep-sea stationary research facility. On the Amphitrite, Dr MacMillan-Barrie tries to come to terms with her circumstance while facing her antipathetic hard-sciences colleagues, an unending series of minor crises both the personal and professional realm, and an increasingly hostile ocean above.”
Under Pressure has 10 episodes out right now, completing the first season. Each episode averages around 20-25 minutes each. There were mentions of a special coming out spanning 5 episodes, but I haven't found any mention of that since the last update to the podcast lineup at @procyon-podcast-network
Transcript are available here: https://www.procyonpodcastnetwork.com/blog/tags/under-pressure
This! Under Pressure was the first podcast I completed when I started setting the goal for myself to complete 1 a week, so it has a very special place in my heart. Aside from that I do really love the deep sea setting, it's one of the things I fall for. And the scientists! (i have nothing else to add on this point i just like scientists) Dr Jamie MacMillan-Barrie is also an amazing protagonist in my opinion, i love the way she goes through the world. Also amazing lesbian rep! And a nonbinary doctor who I relate to. Just a really amazing podcast!
They also have a tumblr @underpressurepodcast
And that concludes this installment of FPRT! I probably should get used to making these days beforehand to get a queue, but this is more fun doing it an hour before anyway. As always, advice, criticism, and corrections are welcome!

hmm… 217
Oh this is fun, so I met one of the writers of this show at PodCon (RIP) and it became the founding show of the Procyon podcast network, which is a slate of shows that is just excellent through and through. And I got to listen to it when it was new!
This show though is Under Pressure, a strangely cozy story about the only writer-in-residence on a deep-sea research vessel. It feels like an amateur project because at the time it was, but it has wonderful character dynamics and some beautiful voice acting.

I'm doing a crawl of older podcasts/audio dramas and I just can feel this one in my bones. Go to around the 7:30 mark in the first episode for the best explanation of "why fanfiction" I have ever heard. It's like a little love letter to fanfiction, its writers, and the community that pops up around it all.

Station to Station Returns...15th April
It’s been a hectic year for your co-captains; between moving, new jobs, cast changes and other production blues, our production has been chugging along slowly. Hope’s on the horizon, though: Station to Station is finally back on route to bring you an all-new season.
Starting Monday, 15th April 2019, our new season brings you 11 new episodes that will be dropping on fortnightly basis.
Here’s what we’ve been getting up to in the past year:
New Season, New Logo!
Tumblr media
We had a secret preview at PodCon - now for the final launch! Our new logo will be taking over Season 2.
New Cast!
Unfortunately, Laura Guzman, who voiced Reva (Santiago) Luther for our first 10 episodes, wasn't able to return with us this season. We hope you'll join us in wishing her the best, and thanking her for taking a chance on our show when it was just a few audition sides and a Google form. We wish her all the best and bon voyage.
This is not the end of Reva's story, however. For season two, we've been joined by Cristina Pitter. We're excited to have her onboard as Reva navigates life after the Astrid (and, ahem, a certain post-boat drink). We'll let her introduce herself some more:
Tumblr media
"Cristina Pitter is a queer fat babe interdisciplinary artist, sex educator, activist, and founder of The Ashè Collective, a group which focuses on storytelling inspired by ancestral roots, while also engaging in community outreach. She also has the best laugh ever. SERIOUSLY. You might have seen her work at The Metropolitan Opera, 59E59 Theaters, Ars Nova, Classic Stage, New Ohio Theatre, Joe’s Pub, The PIT, The Tank, The Flea Theater, JACK, Dixon Place, or three separate but specific bathtubs. Feel free to follow her antics cristinapitter.com."
Cristina isn't our only new addition for season two. We're also excited to welcome Georie Taylor (Under Pressure, Superstition) and Natalie Van Sistine (The Elysium Project, Geek By Night) and Randelle Solomon to our cast. Telling you what they'll be doing is almost impossible without spoiling what's in store this coming season, but for now let's just say life didn't get less complicated on dry land.
Aside from new roles, we also have Emily Wang and Nadine El Amami reprising their regular roles as Miranda and Nelly respectively, along with Kristen DiMercurio as Jackie Simmons, Zach Libresco as Eugene Loshank, Gary Cook as Geoff Howard, and Jo Chiang.
We’re now on TeePublic
Love the logo? Wear it! Buy it! Put it on a mug! (And support the show while you’re at it!)
Procyon Podcast Network is now on TeePublic, together with exclusive Starship Iris designs! Check out the details here!
