For this weeks fiction podcast rec thursday:
Under Pressure
Tumblr media
[ID. The cover art of Under Pressure. It shows a grey metal wall with a porthole. The outside of the porthole is the dark blue ocean with three, almost invisible, tentacles coming from the bottom left side of the hole. In front of the hole, in red text it reads “Under Pressure.” Underneath that in a slightly different font and smaller font it reads “Created by Margaret Clark.” ./End ID]
Summary as given, “In the wake of personal tragedy, Dr Jamie MacMillan-Barrie forgoes a future in academia is favor of an uncertain future in the form of an humanities residency aboard the Amphitrite, a deep-sea stationary research facility. On the Amphitrite, Dr MacMillan-Barrie tries to come to terms with her circumstance while facing her antipathetic hard-sciences colleagues, an unending series of minor crises both the personal and professional realm, and an increasingly hostile ocean above.”
Under Pressure has 10 episodes out right now, completing the first season. Each episode averages around 20-25 minutes each. There were mentions of a special coming out spanning 5 episodes, but I haven't found any mention of that since the last update to the podcast lineup at @procyon-podcast-network
Transcript are available here: https://www.procyonpodcastnetwork.com/blog/tags/under-pressure
This! Under Pressure was the first podcast I completed when I started setting the goal for myself to complete 1 a week, so it has a very special place in my heart. Aside from that I do really love the deep sea setting, it's one of the things I fall for. And the scientists! (i have nothing else to add on this point i just like scientists) Dr Jamie MacMillan-Barrie is also an amazing protagonist in my opinion, i love the way she goes through the world. Also amazing lesbian rep! And a nonbinary doctor who I relate to. Just a really amazing podcast!
They also have a tumblr @underpressurepodcast
And that concludes this installment of FPRT! I probably should get used to making these days beforehand to get a queue, but this is more fun doing it an hour before anyway. As always, advice, criticism, and corrections are welcome!

Oh this is fun, so I met one of the writers of this show at PodCon (RIP) and it became the founding show of the Procyon podcast network, which is a slate of shows that is just excellent through and through. And I got to listen to it when it was new!
This show though is Under Pressure, a strangely cozy story about the only writer-in-residence on a deep-sea research vessel. It feels like an amateur project because at the time it was, but it has wonderful character dynamics and some beautiful voice acting.

Something about the Titanic submersible that’s missing keeps reminding me of the Under Pressure podcast (read: audio drama). Presumably because it’s also an underwater vessel that by nature of it’s job/function is extremely dangerous and if something goes wrong it could cause life-changing events to happen.

U is for @underpressurepodcast!
Dr MacMillan-Barrie takes up a humanities residency on the Amphitrite, an underwater research station. Not only does the crew have to deal with threats outside of the station in the ocean, there are also the difficulties of interpersonal relationships in a confined space.

#every time a character does the whole “talk softly and reassure the dangerous person” thing while also walking ominously towards them ughh#it drives me absolutely nuts. like. you're trying to talk them down from paranoia while you're threateningly walking towards them?#someone does that to me and I'm shooting them at least in the leg or stabbing with whatever makeshift spear I've manufactured#anyway. criminal minds is getting real annoying with the whole pathologizing of people.#like. guy shows signs of being very good at torturing people and they go “ah yes.. a pure sadist” or whatever the fuck#I get that it's shitty crime drama stuff but still. ugh.#I just. I fucking hate when people take the obviously wrong route when talking to mentally destabilized people.#like. people are shit at talking to suicidal people. are shit at talking down irrational fears. people are shit at talking down paranoia.#I hate how people don't fucking know how to interact with freaks I hate how people don't know how to interact with me#everyone acts on their own level without understanding what it's like in any way#and so everyone just projects their own reality onto you without performing any sort of empathy or exercising any sort of understanding#and I want to scream so fucking loud#you're all living in a cotton candy world and your words disintegrate in my humidity#and it's so fucking lonely#and my mind has been clear this past week. the autistic need for pressure satisfied by this prescription pushing on my brain#and I can feel the cogs turning. the wheels and pins and linked gear trains and drive shafts and traction band motors.#all the parts of my brain churning around and I can't get close because the heat from my motor makes my hood hot to the touch.#I burn your hand as you try and press your palm against my flanks.#only think saddle and tack make contact. strict guidelines and harsh rules to govern me.#when I am free I buck and I shift gait and I drag you under too-low branches#also. compared to Hannibal I can basically listen to criminal minds as a podcast. none of the visuals really contribute anything to the show#like. feels very shallow

I desperately want to make art for some of the more underground fiction podcasts I listen to.
The problem is, I'm learning I don't have much of an imagination of what characters look like, and I normally feed off of others art and collect a whole buncha traits and smush them together to make my own design.
This is a problem for podcasts who have no fanart.
But hey, fuck it, I might mess it up but I'll try anyway.

The New York Times, however, does have rules and norms. Schwartz had no prior reporting experience. Her reporting partner Gettleman explained the basics to her, Schwartz said in a podcast interview on January 3, produced by Israel’s Channel 12 and conducted in Hebrew.
Gettleman, she said, was concerned they “get at least two sources for every detail we put into the article, cross-check information. Do we have forensic evidence? Do we have visual evidence? Apart from telling our reader ‘this happened,’ what can we say? Can we tell what happened to whom?”
Schwartz said she was initially reluctant to take the assignment because she did not want to look at visual images of potential assaults and because she lacked the expertise to conduct such an investigation.
This is stunning.
The fear among Times staffers who have been critical of the paper’s Gaza coverage is that Schwartz will become a scapegoat for what is a much deeper failure. She may harbor animosity toward Palestinians, lack the experience with investigative journalism, and feel conflicting pressures between being a supporter of Israel’s war effort and a Times reporter, but Schwartz did not commission herself and her nephew to report one of the most consequential stories of the war. Senior leadership at the New York Times did.
Schwartz said as much in an interview with Israeli Army Radio on December 31. “The New York Times said, ‘Let’s do an investigation into sexual violence’ — it was more a case of them having to convince me,” she said. Her host cut her off: “It was a proposal of The New York Times, the entire thing?”
“Unequivocally. Unequivocally. Obviously. Of course,” she said. “The paper stood behind us 200 percent and gave us the time, the investment, the resources to go in-depth with this investigation as much as needed.”
The whole piece is quite long, please go read it yourself, it's quite definitive.

Max in Control Perez Under Pressure? | Canadian GP Preview | F1 Nation Podcast
With Max Verstappen 53 points ahead in the World Championship, is his teammate Sergio Perez under pressure in Canada? Natalie Pinkham says yes. Tom Clarkson thinks it actually takes the pressure off Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner. A double podium for Mercedes at the Spanish Grand Prix means they’re now ahead of Aston Martin in the Constructors’ Standings. But fighting talk from Fernando Alonso, who says Spain will be their last race without a podium, suggests that battle will continue until the end of the season. Tom and Natalie also discuss contrasting fortunes for Alpine and McLaren, a big personnel change at Alfa Romeo, and whether Yuki Tsunoda will bounce back from his penalty in Barcelona. Plus, FIA Safety Car driver Bernd Mayländer joins the pod as this weekend’s race in Montreal marks 50 years since the Safety Car was first seen in Formula 1. 04:52 – Pressure off Perez? 09:46 – Montreal memories 12:50 – Fernando’s fighting talk 19:13 – Ocon on a roll 24:27 – 50 years of the Safety Car with driver, Bernd Mayländer 38:33 – Ask The Nation 42:38 – Ferrari, Alfa + Yuki 50:41 – All change at F1 Nation Racing... [2023] TOP 20 PODCASTS ON AO3 FOUND IN FANDOMS > OTHER MEDIA
To make this ranking, all series titles in Other Media were copy-pasted to Google Sheets, rearranged according to number of fanworks, and then manually filtered since not all podcasts were marked as such.
The numbers under each rank indicate how much they rose/fell in the rankings based on last year's (Oct. 24, 2023) rankings, which can be found here. The gray numbers in parenthesis indicate how much fanworks it gained since last year.
The data for this year and last year's rankings were taken while logged in, so lcoked fanworks are included in the count.
A few web series like Critical Role and Dimensions 20 released audio-only versions of their works too, but I left them out since they were listed was a web series on ao3 and more known as one too.
Cabin Pressure has also been left off the list this time since its podcast format was only released in 2019, years after it aired on the radio.
All nonfiction podcasts have also been excluded (Not that there were many), because with RPFs, it’s hard to tell if the fic in question is just based on the podcast or because of the things the person has done outside of it. Last year, I accidentally included The Misfits in the list since I didn't realize from its description that it was nonfiction.
The Two Princes (Podcast) ranks 21st in the rankings this year, and actually ranked 20th last year when the rankings are adjusted to exclude Cabin Pressure and The Misfits.
The College Tapes is actually a spinoff of The Bright Sessions.
Thanks for understanding and hopefully I didn’t mess up anywhere! 🙏

how does single mom handle seeing comments on the internet about her and evie? i feel like she would hide her feelings and ignore them the best she could until she gets to her breaking point
HATE COMMENTS - family is family universe
Tumblr media
When you’d been revealed to be dating Quinn, the internet had been brutal. You were eight months into the relationship when the internet caught wind of Quinn’s new romance.
Your Instagram had been flooded with hateful comments, each of them calling you a gold digger, a bad mother, ugly, fat, not good enough to date Quinn.
You were stunned by the amount of hate that flooded every one of your socials, under every picture, in all of your private messages, even under photos of Evie.
That is when you decided to delete majority of your accounts and go private on the remaining.
You tried your best to protect Evie from this hate, even when it was brought up on radio stations and hockey podcasts that you’d turned on.
Quinn was oblivious to how awful the things being said were, as you tried to hide the worst from him. He always spoke about how much he cherished the two of you in interviews, raving about how much he loved Evie and adored being able to raise her with you.
You tried to keep a brave face, but each vile comment pierced your heart. There were nights you stayed up late, scrolling through the endless stream of comments until the screen blurred through your tears.
You didn't want to burden Quinn with the negativity; he had enough on his plate with his career.
But the pressure of pretending everything was fine began to wear on you.
Each snide remark, each insult, each unwarranted attack chipped away at your composure. You found yourself avoiding social gatherings, skipping outings with friends, and declining invitations to events.
The anxiety of facing the world outside your bubble of home grew into an overwhelming panic.
Then came the night of a Canucks family night. The whole team had gathered at a local restaurant to celebrate their victory. You sat in the corner, trying to blend into the background with your eyes locked on Evie who was curled into Quinn’s arms as he chatted away with Petey.
You sat with a small smile as Natalie, J.T. Miller’s wife, approached you.
"Hey, I’ve seen some pretty awful stuff people have been saying online recently," she began cautiously, laying her hand atop of yours. "Are you okay?"
"It's fine," you lied, your facade cracking. You felt your hands begin to tremble and your throat to tighten. You sucked in a breath before forcing a tense smile, that didn’t reach your eyes. "People can be cruel, but I can handle it."
She didn't push further, but her concern lingered around you, as she reassured you that you could text her anytime.
Later in the night, as you watched Quinn with Evie, laughing and enjoying the night, you felt a pang of guilt. He deserved to know what you were going through, but how could you add to his stress?
That night, after putting Evie to bed, you sat on the edge of your shared bed and stared at the wall. The comments replayed in your mind, louder and more vicious than ever. You could hear the whispers of doubt, the echo of every cruel word.
Finally, you broke.
The sobs came in raw and uncontrollable waves, as you clutched a pillow to your chest to muffle the sound so that Evie and Quinn wouldn’t be alerted.
Quinn found you in that position, curled up and shaking, tears staining your cheeks as your shoulders wracked with your sobs. He rushed to your side, pulling you into his arms, where you let your sadness bubble over as you blurted everything to Quinn
"Why didn't you tell me?" he whispered, his voice filled with hurt as he pulled you closer.
You couldn't find the words. All you could do was hold on to him, feeling the warmth of his body radiating as he held you close to his chest and lulled you into sleep.
The next morning, as the first light of the morning filtered through the curtains of your room, Quinn sat beside you on the bed, his hand gently rubbing your back as your eyes blinked open.
"We need to talk about last night," he said softly, his eyes searching yours once you were fully awake. You nodded shyly, your fingers clutching the bed sheets.
"I didn't want to worry you," you eventually admitted. "I thought I could handle it, but it just got so overwhelming."
"You don't have to handle this alone. We're a team, remember?” Quinn took a deep breath, his expression determined. "If something's hurting you, it's hurting me too."
"I'm made a statement last night," He continued carefully causing your eyes to widen while he reached for his phone. "People needed to know that this wasn’t okay."
The last thing you wanted was to cause more drama, but Quinn was right. This had to stop.
You watched as he handed you his phone, Instagram open with his newest post pulled up. It was his favourite picture of the three of you. It had been taken by Ellen when she’d come to visit and consisted of you and Quinn holding Evie’s hands as she walked between you in the park nearby your house.
Your gaze darted down to the caption and tears instantly pricked your eyes.
"I am incredibly fortunate to have an amazing partner, y/n and a wonderful daughter, Evie. Recently, there has been an uptake in hurtful comments and harassment directed at them which have been deeply troubling and completely unacceptable. This has to stop. As a player on the Canucks, I am ashamed to read countless harmful words directed at my family by people who claim to be fans of the team. Words have power. Thank you for your understanding and support."
As you instinctively dove into the comments, you realised the response was immediate and overwhelming. Messages of support and love flooded in, drowning out any lingering hate. Friends, fans, and even teammates rallied around you, offering words of encouragement and love for the three of you.
Throughout the day, Quinn (who had a day off) never left your side, as the three of you curled up on the couch and had a lazy day. He fielded calls and texts, his protective instincts kicking into high gear. Evie, sensing the tension, clung to you both, sprawling between you and Quinn for comfort.
You glanced at Quinn, who had his hand in Evie’s, his face smiling at a joke from the movie and you knew that despite the turmoil, your little family was going to be okay
