tadelsa: two sides of the same coin

I've lost count of how much I've talked about this with friends so it's about time I finally write a post about it because boy oh boy how I love these two

(but first thing's first: I personally hc Tadashi as 21 years old during BH6 with him and Hiro having a 7 year age gap based solely on their dynamic as siblings bc you cannot convince me that they have a 3-4 year age gap)

Both Tadashi and Elsa were thrust into grief and responsibility at such a young age (parents dying / isolation AND parents dying)

Both have younger siblings to guide / protect and they want the best for them (and both would dive head first into danger if their family/friends were in trouble, lack of self-preservation smh)

Both wanting to do their family and friends right (see: self-imposed perfectionism)

It's just that while Tadashi was surrounded by a good support system, Elsa was all by herself (and pushed out whatever help she could have had)

It's such an interesting dynamic to have in a ship, I think, to have a similar past/situation yet contrasting personalities and contrasting ways of showing love:

Elsa pushes people away to "protect" them from her (hurting them in the process but she's so convinced that this is for the best and for their safety that she doesn't even hesitate to push them away anymore)

Tadashi pulls people in, wanting them to thrive, feel loved, and belong. Helping people out without them even asking (which could lend itself to a savior complex or self-worth = usefulness belief typical first-born Asian behavior, source: me, a first-born Asian)

But despite this, they're attracted (platonically or romantically) to each other because Tadashi is the first person (outside of her family) to not cower or shy away when she pushes him away and/or when he finds out her secret. And Elsa is the first person not to be immediately charmed or drawn in because of Tadashi's empathy and compassion, the first to be skeptical of this perfect persona he subconsciously built for himself.

Their differences make it hard for their similarities to be apparent but when they realize their similarities, it's hard to ignore (acknowledging their own traits by recognizing it in the other)

These differences could honestly bring out frustration in the beginning (immovable force = Elsa's walls vs unstoppable object = Tadashi's warmth) but these differences could ultimately, once they've gotten to know each other, bring out the best out of each other (it could also go incredibly wrong but that's a scenario for another post/fic 😆)

Tadashi inspires Elsa to come out of her shell, to trust people, to trust herself, to love openly and fiercely while Elsa inspires Tadashi to put on some gaddamn boundaries for once, to take time for himself, to not spread himself too thinly in order to help everyone, to let go of things out of his control, to let himself be helped when he needs it

One does not save or change the other but their presence in each other's lives inspire them to look at a different perspective and take a step towards a better self

10 years ago today I was 11 (almost 12) and I went to the Disney website and saw pictures and character descriptions of Frozen for the very first time. I drew this which is my first drawing of Anna :,) I was so excited that I Skyped my friend to tell her about it lol. 2013 activities.

#I remember putting my hair into twin braids to match Anna’s #I downloaded the pictures and opened them up in ms paint and just zoomed in to look at the details #I showed my mom the pictures and she said they looked Scandinavian and I didn’t even know what that meant😭#I recreated Anna’s outfit in Pixie Hollow which still existed then #I made Elsa’s too but it wasn’t as accurate #I was so hyped for Frozen that when Pixie Hollow closed I just switched over to Frozen because I was so sad about Pixie Hollow closing

watched jojo rabbit today. think the mom is a little too indie movie ish and it’s a bit more glib than i like my wwii movies to be, but those are really my main problems with it. of course it made me super uncomfortable a lot of the time but that’s the intended effect

#im not jewish so im really not qualified to judge elsas relationship with jojo but it felt kind of. hm #like not manic pixie dream girl but more that she represented a concept more than a person sometimes #i thought the blatant and pervasive ableism was genius #oh also. nobody yell at me but i don’t think taika should have played hitler #not because of his race literally just because i don’t think hes as good of an actor as he is a director #and what is a fine but not great performance from waititi could have been an incredible one from someone else

A modern day Atlas, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, but a sacrifice that he made willingly so that no other royal child would have to. Along with being the perfect prince himself, Topher took his responsibility as Ben’s right hand incredibly seriously. Whether that be coaching him in all of the skills that a prince should have, or tutoring him on matters of policy and protocol, or helping him draft his first official decree as king. Whatever it may take, Topher would do anything to protect and support Ben, to help him be the best king he could be without having to sacrifice his childhood. Before the last episode airs, and I know this is meant more for twitter but I can’t say it there because I will be crucified:

If I see people making jokes about Amity’s chin being ugly just because of god forbid a bad drawing or two, I’m seriously going to (REDACTED). People are legitimately so fucking mean, it was funny for a bit but then devolved into making fun of a girl who just happens to have a prominent chin and not the standard pixie Disney-style “girl face”.

The women of TOH already have a lot less variation especially in things like noses, eyebrows, and face shape to make them look more ‘cute’ and ‘feminine’. I don’t mean this as a major slight on the crew because this kind of design is insidious and kind of happens without actual intent behind it. But obviously someone realized and wanted to change Amity’s face shape for Season 3. And it’s FINE. She’s literally only being made fun of for it because she’s a girl and it’s unusual to see female characters with stronger jaws.

I grew up with an underbite and was pressured by adults into getting (incredibly invasive!!) surgery to correct it since I was eight years old. Surgery that would take 6 weeks for me to recover from and which during that time I wouldn’t be able to eat any solid foods or be able to talk, and it was for almost purely cosmetic reasons! Amity doesn’t even have an underbite. But the world is so cruel to young girls’ appearances that it’s just not funny anymore. God forbid she doesn’t look like Elsa.

The online Demri book is so good!! I've known about Demri for nearly 10 years now but there's stuff in there I hadn't read before, you did a great job. I would be so curious to know more about her flaws, as weird as that sounds. I think she's always come across as a perfect human which makes it feel she was almost supernatural. I have trouble articulating it fully in a short message, because I also know that loved ones would rather not speak poorly of her and want to focus on the good, and that should be respected. But I don't know, I think it would be nice to know about her more 'fully'. It seems alluded to in the book and it made me wonder. Flaws make people more relatable, she's always seemed unattainably perfect to me, even with the darkness and addiction. Anyway, great book, and I hope I explained this with the nuance and tact that I intended!

One aspect of Demri’s personality, according to Austin [Demri’s mom], was her inability to handle guilt. In Austin’s words, “If she offended you, and you didn’t have a cell phone or anything, she would start calling your house, waiting for you to get home to apologize.”

Kathleen Austin: Her concern for others was far beyond her concern for herself.

Barbara Dearaujo: She was constantly on the run. Not sure it was running scared but running for sure. Maybe she was afraid of missing out or just looking for the next thing to stimulate her. I have no clue what it was but I definitely could not keep up with her and whenever I tried or whoever tried we all would end up just as sick, lost and confused and most of us would tap out. She never tapped it seemed, no matter how horrible the circumstances got she could deal with it. Crazy. I wouldn’t call her suicidal but definitely self-destructive. Poor girl. Such a sad story. Demri always and forever a wild wood pixie.

Fabiola Gonzalez: The beautiful soul of Demri is she never had an ounce of hate in her heart. She loved everyone. She was so unconditional even when she was judged and even faulted on her own self-love. She was a good person. Better to others than she was to herself.

Krista Kay: She also had some rough times and went down a heartbreaking road. She was beautiful and complicated, and unforgettable, and human.

Krista Kay: Want to honor their [Demri's and Layne's] memory? Pursue your dreams and talents, lift up others, and take care of your body and mind.

Keli Lake: Demri is special to me because she inspired my self-confidence. It’s complicated since she lacked it herself. It’s like she gave it all away until she was depleted.

Rob Meiser: She was a good person with a big heart but she was fighting demons like most of us.

Jacque Nakken: She always wanted to make others happy, more than herself.

Elsa Schmolke: It’s all very sad but Demri was certainly loved but just so out of control nobody could help her.

Scott Spivey: Always kindness even when she struggled so hard with her demons.

Mara Wheelan: My dear soul sister, she extracted the truly beautiful parts of my soul and made me unafraid. She brought light into the depths of darkness from within. She loved all my ugliness and glorified my uniqueness.

Chay Wilkerson Moore: Demri was like a beautiful flower stuck in a tornado. She was very sweet, most of the time. Always yelled my name and hugged me, made me feel special, like she did most people. Very strong spirit, very bent on destruction, I don’t know why... [She was] The most powerful pretty little thing, with this profound sense of vulnerability that she seemed surrounded by. A princess in distress. I immediately felt the need to protect her in a brotherly way.

For what we've learnt about Demri trough all these years, and reading what her closest people said about the subject, is that she had a poor mental health. She had an addiction in the first place, an addiction usually is the consequence of a poor mental health. She may also was not very self-confident or self-conscious, she always wished the best for all the others but didn't apply to herself. Like Robbie Williams, sometimes the people that look the happiest, have the worst demons, and with no professional help, it is very difficult to fight them.

Maybe she went to drug therapy and I guess that included mental health therapy. But back in the day that was taboo. Still today it looks you are crazy or insane if you admit you go (or have been) to therapy (and I have been and still go!), so imagine back then. Plus if she didn't have the money nor the support, probably for her it was easier to escape her demons by actually taking the thing that caused them - the drugs.

I always find her story so tragic. So young. With so many people around that cared about her, and still she succumbed to drugs. I suppose is what Jerry Cantrell said about Layne. All the band members and his mum tried to help him, but they had their own struggles as well, and if ultimately he didn't want to be helped... there's not much you can do. I wish she could have let herself help.

The book is here for everyone to read it. Please, take care of yourself, look for help and support if you need it. Mental and emotional health are as important as physical health.
