Visual Weight — the tendency for certain elements in an image to draw the viewer's eye more than others, is largely based on contrasts. The contrast between light and dark, between warm and cool colours, between saturated and unsaturated, between large and small. Understanding the visual weight relationships in an image allows us to direct the viewer's attention where we want them to go, strengthening the narrative, or perhaps providing a visual anchor for an image. Photography A Free Educational Resource

TALKING PICTURES features in-depth interviews with photographers around the world. Conceived as a continually expanding educational resource, it is available to everyone free of charge and free of advertising. Since its launch in 2020, Talking Pictures has had well over 100,000 visitors from more than 100 countries worldwide. Interviews are published weekly and this week we celebrate the publication of the 200th interview.

TALKING PICTURES embraces a wide range of practice from simple pin-hole camerawork and alternative processes, through documentary, poetic, conceptual, and constructed approaches, to the newest digital and AI-assisted techniques. The artists interviewed hail from many different countries and cultures across all six inhabited continents. Interviews explore the motivation and development of each artist’s work, the reasons for their creative and aesthetic choices, and the things they have learned along the way. The content is aimed at all those with an interest in photography and is suitable for senior secondary, tertiary, and general readers.

A Sense of Wonder

How do you approach your day? When you arise do you find yourself excited about what awaits you during the hours ahead? Is there an element of adventure that dwells within your mind, jump starting your imagination and creativity, preparing you for another adventurous opportunity? If not, why not?

Something as simple as looking closely at the mysteries of a flower used to be enough to delight and amaze us as kids. It's still there, that sense of adventure. We only need to stop long enough to allow it to take hold once more and fill our life with amazement.

You don't feel you have time for such childish things? My friend, time is everything. It's all any of us have. None of us knows how much is in that time bank account of ours so why not use what you have to reclaim that sense of wonder that still exists? We must only look for it.

The art of Seeing beyond seeing. It's more than meets the eye. It's what we experience & share with others using introspection, insight, and imagination. Together let's broaden & deepen our creative skills & practices in life.

Evening walks with a camera, no matter the country, often find me out late into the night. There is an appeal to shooting deep in the night that holds me.
