What are your MCs favorite holidays?

That’s such an interesting question, Anon! For some of my MC and OCs I have considered this subject before and even written something, but not for all of them.

Elizabeth Foredale (OC/Desire and Decorum AU!) - For Elizabeth it’s definitely Christmas. She loves everything about this holiday, from the family gatherings to decorating the tree (in the one-shot A Dash of Christmas Magic I wrote a little about her impressions about the holiday and how she used to decorate the tree with her mother growing up and how this tradition brought her joy, they would create the most fun and extravagant decorations for their home, like a Hello Kitty themed tree, which she loved it!, and in this fic Hamid helps her find the same joy again). Choosing gifts for her loved ones is also something she adores. Even though she misses her mother, the season is still very special to her and definitely the favorite holiday.

After she starts dating Hamid, she'll become fond of New Year's too, because he loves it and there's a lot of fun traditions and in his home it involves delicious meals with his family and parties with his friends, and he's always so happy that the holiday grows on her.

Olivia and Kai Park (MC/Perfect Match) – both my MCs Olivia and Kai love Christmas! For them it's the season of joy and they walk around like they were living in a Hallmark movie even without taking a plane to a small winter Christmas town. I wrote one fic showing Kai and Nadia Park's passion about the holidays and their traditions in a fic called The Most Wonderful Time of the Year (Or Maybe Not). While the Parks love the holiday, the grumpy Detective Damien is on the opposite spectrum...

Malia Jones (MC/Wake the Dead) – Malia grew up in a post-apocalyptique world where many of those things that bring us together were lost, not to mention the Tower is the kind of colony where survival was the most important thing and old world's traditions were not appreciated. So I HC they haven’t preserved most of the holidays from the Old World, maybe just celebrating the 4th of July in some kind of tradition to honour the founding fathers or something like that, or maybe created some holiday to celebrate their leader or the colony's endurance. I don't think Malia and her rebellious and anti-authoritarian spirit would appreciate this sort of celebration. But if she learned about the Old World's holidays and traditions, I have a feeling she would love most of it, but specially Valentine’s Day, a holiday to tell people you love and appreciate them is something she totally relates to, and would think this should be celebrated monthly at least because when you're always risking your life and losing people you shouldn't wait a moment to tell them that. She’d like the romantic aspects of V-day too, of course, and would not mind at all if there could be gifts and nice meals involved, and if Troy prepared something to surprise her, but the fraternal and platonic loves would resonate much more with her.

And New Year would also be a favorite! To celebrate you survived another year and think about the future means hope. And that’s something that moves her and is essential when you're leaving after the world ended.

And at Olympus and the new colonies, they'd probably create their own celebrations and she’ll definitely be the most enthusiastic celebrator of all.

Arwen (MC/Blades) – Probably all of them! I think in their universe, most of the holidays are related to crops and the changing of seasons, and Arwen would love all the happy ones filled with music and dance and drinking. She’s an optimistic and overall happy Elf and she loves to celebrate. She’ll have no problem in joining Tyril for the elven celebrations at Undermount too, specially if they involve food and dancing and fancy clothes. After the ball at Undermount, she discovered she really likes dressing up. In our world Halloween would be the kind of holiday that would have her sooooo excited!

Zoey (MC/Ride or Die) – before her mother died, Zoey loved all the holidays and celebrate them with her family, she has plenty of memories of 4th of July barbecues, dressing in matching costumes with her mother and father for Halloween, stuffing herself with her mother's famous pumpkin pie and all the traditions before Christmas and during the entire season... But after that, she lost interest in most of them. It was bittersweet and her father had no interest in celebrations either. Probably she’ll manage to find new meaning for them when she gets older and create new memories for them, but for now, I think during college years Halloween and New Year’s Eve would be favorites.

The first because it’s a moment to pretend being someone else, use costumes, dance and party and she can relieve a bit her days with the crew, and the second because a brand new year ahead is something that gives hope, and she’s hopeful to find her way and become the woman she’s suppose to be. And lists. Zoey is obsessed with lists and organization and she’ll dedicate a long time writing the resolutions for the new year (it’s also a way she finds to honour her mother’s memory, since it was something they did together).

Reiji Sakamaki:

In the dimly lit confines of the Sakamaki residence, in the heart of Reiji's private chambers, you gathered your courage. Your heart pounded against your ribcage as you stood before the closed door leading to his lab. You knew this was the moment, the moment to confess your feelings to the arrogant and perfectionistic vampire. With a deep breath, you knocked on the door. "Reiji, may I come in?" you asked, your voice trembling slightly. Inside, Reiji was hunched over his workbench, engrossed in a concoction of bubbling liquids and arcane scrolls. His violet eyes flicked toward the door, and he sighed impatiently. "Can it wait?" he retorted, his tone as cold as ever.

You swallowed hard, forcing yourself to take a step into the lab. "I... I can't wait any longer," you stammered, your hands trembling. "Reiji, I need to tell you something." Reiji raised an eyebrow, finally tearing his gaze away from his experiments. "This had better be important," he grumbled, irritation clear in his voice.

Gathering every ounce of courage you had, you took another step closer. "Reiji, I like you," you confessed, your eyes locked onto his. "I know you're always busy with your experiments, but I can't keep this to myself any longer." For a moment, silence hung heavy in the air. Reiji stared at you, his normally composed expression faltering. Then, he let out a long, exasperated sigh. "Honestly, you choose the most inconvenient times for such matters."

But to your surprise, a small, almost imperceptible smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "Very well," he conceded. "I suppose we can discuss this later. For now, help me with this experiment. Your assistance might prove useful." Though his dismissal was still evident, his willingness to entertain the idea warmed your heart. You nodded eagerly, stepping closer to Reiji and his bubbling potions, grateful for this small moment of connection with the prideful vampire.

Let me preface this by saying it's not all about notes. If notes were of paramount importance to me, I would have been in another fandom and made vastly different decisions with the pairings that I write for. So, it's not about notes… but an observation.

The fandom was already in decline when I joined. In fact, some bigger creators had already left because so many had left. Even so, it was a very different landscape 2 years ago.

Back then, the unwritten rule (as explained to me by a now-gone creator) was 100. If a fic got over 100 notes, it was good; if it was under, it wasn't.

I never put stock in that because I've read phenomenal fics with well under 100 notes. In a fandom that tends to be very transactional and where politics plays a big part in notes, it was never a gauge for me.

But, as the fandom grew smaller, 100 notes became a near impossibility. Many creators have left as a result, and while it's easy to judge, I can understand. It's difficult to put your heart and soul into your work and have it get very little to no interaction. I think those who remain are the diehards; we’re clearly here because we love the content and the community.

That said, I’m curious about what other writers think about the notes they receive today? Is there a number where you say, "OK, it was worth making post-worthy?"

Personally, anything over 50 leaves me giddy these days. lol If it's in the 30 range, I’m content. But it’s funny because I write for Wake the Dead. I know those fics are lucky if they get 20 notes, but it doesn't stop me. I've gotten some of the most self-satisfaction from writing those stories, and having even one enthusiastic reader is so gratifying. So, what about you...

Summary: Arielle & Hayden go shopping for Christmas décor as they get ready to celebrate their first holiday together.

Arielle stood in the aisle, squinting at the snowglobe she was holding in her hands, turning it around and inspecting it as if it were an otherworldly object.

"Hmm, not sure about this one. Hey, Hayden, what do you think?"

She turned to the man beside her and held up the snowglobe to offer him a view. Hayden put down the nutcracker he was looking at, and took the snowglobe from Arielle, chuckling as he did so.

"I'm pretty sure this is the seventh snowglobe you've shown me since we came in here. Have you even looked at anything else?"

Arielle crossed her arms defensively. "Of course I have!"

"Like…?"

"Like…" she paused, finding herself at a loss.

"A lot of things, okay? You just didn't see. Now, please tell me if you think this snowglobe is cute enough to be in our living room or not."

Hayden shook his head in amusement, then gently plucked it from her hands, and placed it into their shopping cart.

"I think it's perfect. Now, come on, let's move on from the snowglobes before you give yourself an aneurysm, alright?" He teased, lightly bumping her shoulder with his.

She sighed, "Alright. Fine. I just… want everything to look splendid, you know? After all, this will be our first official Christmas together."

"And I am very much looking forward to it," he leaned over and planted a loving kiss to her lips. "You have nothing to worry about, believe me. With all the goodies we got already, our place is gonna look like the very definition of Christmas!"

Hayden suddenly paused, a thoughtful look gracing his features. "Although, I guess technically this is going to be my first Christmas in general, considering…" He trailed off, his expression slightly falling.

Arielle immediately knew what he was talking about.

"Honey, come on, let's try not to think about that. The important thing is that I'm going to be with you, we're going to be together, and so will all of our friends too. That's what really matters."

Hayden was silent for a moment, then he nodded. "Yeah. Yeah, you're right. I'm sorry for being such a downer. The most important thing is the here and now."

Arielle nodded. "Exactly. So, right now, let's continue looking for that giant nutcracker you kept pestering me about. Even though I still think it's going to look weird next to the Christmas tree."

"Hey! I'll have you know, I'm the master decorator! I know what I'm doing, thank you very much."

She laughed. "I'm sure you do. Now, come on, let's keep looking."

As they walked throughout the store, they picked up various decorations along the way, slowly filling their cart to the brim with Christmas adornments. They continued searching the aisles until they finally found the aforementioned nutcracker, which Hayden effortlessly picked up and placed onto their cart.

"..And, that should be all! I think we've gotten everything on the list." Hayden grinned as he looked down at the nearly bursting cart.

"You sure about that, honey? Because I think we're missing something very important." Arielle purred, suddenly holding up a mistletoe.

Hayden raised a brow. "Oh, yeah? I wasn't aware that was on the list. Not that I'm complaining."

She simply smiled at him, then raised it above her head, and feigned a look of surprise. "Look, there’s mistletoe! We have to kiss, it’s the law."

He laughed. "Oh, it's the law now, is it?"

"Yes, it is. Now, come over here, handsome." She beckoned him with a finger.

"As you wish, my lady."

He wiggled his eyebrows as he walked towards her, grabbing her by the hips, and pulling her close. Their lips crashed together passionately as soon as their bodies collided.

Arielle responded immediately, wrapping her arms around his neck as she deepened the kiss. Once they broke apart, they pressed their foreheads together and softly gazed into each other's eyes.

Hayden smiled, "I'm so thankful for you."

She smiled back at him, and gave him one last kiss. "I feel the same way. I love you, Hayden."

"And I love you, Arielle. More than anything."

I haven't realized how much I've missed writing for this pairing. I hope you enjoy it!

Leaning back on the armchair, Olivia’s eyes rest on Damien over the rim of the mug and she can’t help but smile at the sight of him holding their newborn baby. Never in her life she thought her heart could overflow with this much joy and love, yet her love seems to multiply daily, and her only desire is to drink in the perfection of this moment.

Amalia’s head, a mess of black hair, leaned up on his shoulder, he swayed gently from side to side in a little dance around the quiet living room. This time, there were no tears welling up in his eyes like the first dozens of times he held her in the hospital, which totally ruined his cool and mysterious vibe – not that Olivia still bought that act after all the years they’ve known each other, but she made sure to tell him that and for once there was no quick-witted comeback –, only that soft and affectionate smile, still a little dazzled by this tiny creature that somehow looks like neither of them but has so much of them both, Damien’s eyes and chin, her nose and hair, but the toothless smile is exclusively Amalia’s.

The years have made him soft, he said once. Olivia knows the truth: he’s always been soft in the inside.

Now this kindhearted man has become an amazing father, being present in every moment since those two blue lines appeared on that stick. While she was happy, but terrified, laughing and crying at the same time, everything suddenly becoming so real and overwhelming, his touch and words grounded her.

"You made me the happiest man alive," he said then and picked her up and swiveled with such giddiness that for a second she thought it was impossible for them to ever be any happier than in that moment, yet here they are: even happier. Despite the exhaustion and sleepless nights, they are fortunate and the happiest they have ever been. Any smile of her makes it all worth it, and the way she grabbed their fingers with her tiny hand just steals their breaths away.

Olivia is not an overthinker, on the contrary, but her mind works in mysterious ways these days and she can already envision him and Amalia bonding over the years, Damien recording her first steps, singing in her first birthday, crying on her first day of kindergarten if she doesn’t look back at him before going inside – though, no matter what she says, to be honest, they’ll both cry if she decides to be too independent too soon – and all those little moments that will follow, like teaching her to play soccer or braiding her hair or walking her to school. She can also envision Amalia with a sibling, Damien holding them both in his arms, maybe a little boy, maybe more girls… they always talked about having a big family and he is already used to being bossed around by a bunch of loud girls. He’d thrive being the father of two or three girls, maybe they will need a bigger apartment soon or perhaps a house of their own. The idea of a house has been worming its way into her mind lately. They could get a dog and have a spare room to have guests over. They could host barbecues in the yard, and Nadia would paint the kids’ faces and teach them to skate; Steve could prepare delicious sweets; Sloane could help braid Amalia’s hair and teach her about the constellations; and Hayden could bring Dipper and they could all play games.

Thinking about this, she’s so proud that they took that first step years ago, fighting fear and awkwardness to bring to light the love they tried to hide for too long.

From across the room, Damien meets her eyes. He tries to read her expression behind the steam raising from the mug and mouths a silent “What?” to not disturb the baby yawning against his shoulder.

“I love you,” she mouths back at him, and he beams. Despite the dark circle under his eyes, his whole face glows.

“I love you too,” he whispers, and kisses the top of Amalia’s head.

The future doesn’t scare her, because she knows Damien will always be by her side and they can accomplish anything together. Being a family is no longer a dream, and she will cherish like a treasure Amalia and all the babies they might still have.

Hey crazy thought but maybe Kairi wouldn’t seem like such a ‘wasted character’ if this fandom would quit taking everything of narrative and thematic significance about her and assigning it to Riku constantly all the time.

(The evaluation of the ways in which Kairi and Riku are important and vital foils for each other got kind of long so it’s under a read more; to be clear, I love Riku so much, and it makes me super mad to see his narrative also being undermined by this trend, this is not a hate post.)

Kairi and Riku serve opposing but complementary purposes in the narrative. Kairi represents light, but she also represents the stagnation of the light. Many characters who are associated with just light are also associated with stagnation and a resistance to change. Hoder and Eraqus are particularly extreme examples, but Aqua exemplifies this as well. They want a predictable world where things stay as they ‘should’ be and they are threatened by changes to the status quo. Eraqus in particular refuses to change anything about himself for 60 years, only taking on students at the last minute because he’s running out of time. Kairi, like Eraqus and Hoder and Aqua, stands as the bold, sharp light that casts others into shadow.

However, the other side of “resistance to change” means that Kairi represents restoration. She is able to restore Sora in KH1, pull them home in KH2, and hold Sora back from death itself in KH3, because her power is one of restoration. She holds so tightly to their old way of being that she can stop death itself in the interest of not changing too drastically. But she is unable to move forward on her own, because she fears change too much. She wants to chase after the boys when they keep leaving her behind…but she isn’t able to keep up, because what she actually wants is for them not to run at all.

She wants to go home, and restore their previous status quo. This desire is consistent in her for the entire series; this is also why she is unable to let go of her childhood crush for Sora, even though he’s obviously not the person she wants him to be anymore. For Sora, Kairi is the rock, she is the home that will always be there, he feels that she is the secure dock he can always return to after the storm. He relies on her not changing, which reinforces her fear of change. Lea is similar, and they can bond in KH3 over both their mutual desires to restore a prior, idealized status quo where their friends were reliably there and not at risk of disappearing on them or running away from them or changing.

Riku on the other hand embodies transformation. He represents change to the status quo, growth and development and a new way to be. Too much change is as much of a problem as too little; Kairi in KH1 sees Riku wants change, and it scares her, and he does in fact go too far. At the same time, she’s the catalyst for Riku’s desire to change their circumstances. Kairi’s arrival at the islands in the meteor shower incites Riku to dream of going to the outside world. This too is a tension that creates an anxiety in Kairi - in a way, she can see herself as to blame for Riku’s desire to change. But Riku was always going to change, because that’s who he is. He is radical change, the change that cuts away restrictive dogma so that the world can advance. Riku drives Sora to also want to grow and change, to excel and challenge himself. Sora wants to be like Riku, whose strength and internal drive he admires.

Ultimately Kairi and Riku are in BALANCE with each other. Ironically, while Kairi is themed as ‘the sea,’ her narrative purpose is to be steady as the earth. Riku’s name is ‘the earth,’ but he is changing and dangerous as the sea. They are one another’s reflections in the narrative. Kairi’s arc is about learning to let go and move forward, even though it scares her. Riku’s entire arc is about finding balance, not throwing away the comfort of the past, that inoculates him from falling too far the way Baldr and Xehanort do. Riku can drive Kairi to join them by giving her a Keyblade too. Kairi can pull Riku back from fleeing from them by seeing him even under Ansem’s face. He is able to be in contrast with Kairi in a healthy way, in a way that honors her fears while also refusing stagnation. They have to work TOGETHER to find Sora, because they are one another’s narrative and thematic opposites. Kairi is too stagnant on her own, and Riku too volatile. Sora is the healthy middle between them, the center-point that can bind the light and the dark TOGETHER for one purpose.

Kairi is narratively and thematically important to Kingdom Hearts. She represents something, and trying to take the things that reinforce her narrative importance to the story (her representation of the light, her narrative purpose of ‘disruption’ in her arrival via the meteor shower, her position as the one who grounds Sora in opposition to Riku’s position as the one who drives Sora to push himself and achieve more) not only undermines her story, it undermines Riku’s.

Kairi is too stagnant for Sora #There is already plenty in the narrative for Riku to be a good match for Sora #You don't need to take Kairi's shit too!! Goddamn.

I have spent so long fidgetting with this thing for my fanfic and I have no idea how to make it perfect lol. They’re somehow all too tall, but Akemi is too short, and I feel like things will just get more off balance if I adjust anything. What a dilemma I face.
