I don’t believe it happens in the books but Percy telling Sally that “he doesn’t get to ignore you” while he’s fine with his dad ignoring Percy himself is extreme book Percy energy

i think it’s interesting how in the book, percy killing ms. dobbs is described as “the only thing that comes naturally” that being percy swinging the sword and turning her to dust, and him killing the minotaur is almost accidental, he snaps the horn off by ACCIDENT and happens to come up with it positioned to kill the beast and how that contributes to his feelings of inadequacy, whereas in the show so far, him killing ms. dobbs was a complete and total accident, and you can actually see some of the thought process in the show of him ripping the horn from the minotaurs skull and driving it through his brain. idk once you get down to it, it shows a very stark difference between this is something that is happening to me to this is something i am doing, my mother told me monsters are real and now one took her from me and what i can do is take it in return and i do think it’s also exemplifying this tonal shift that the show has taken by not having percy’s inner monologue to explain his thought process as events unfold, and also their stronger focus on relationships and building up camp life to an extent

Percy's "I could never imagine us being friends" was not actually a line of dialogue. It was, in fact, a knife shot directly into my heart.
do I get it thematically? yes.
do I also know *exactly* how AB felt in that moment? yes.

Not gonna lie, Annabeth's worst crime is how she treated Tyson. Even after she watches Tyson save Percy life multiple times (while Annabeth herself stood by invisibly and did nothing until the last minute), she still dehumanizes him, calls him gross, a monster, a mistake... I could go on. All the quotes are below, from SoM.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then by the end of the book, she never apologizes to Tyson. She never apologizes for all the insults and the dehumanization and how she made him feel. Even though she said all of this in Tyson's vicinity. Even though Tyson himself picked up on how nasty Annabeth was to him, to the point where he was miserable and borderline crying. Must I remind you that Tyson is 7-8 years old? He's a literal child, years younger than Annabeth. And she's viciously bullying him, even after Percy tells her to stop multiple times.
She only acknowledges that Tyson saved their lives - that he's useful. In her eyes, Tyson is redeemed only because he was ready to sacrifice his life to save hers and Percy's - and almost died in the process. At 8 years old. Not because he's a child worthy of respect, care and kindness (regardless of what species he is). But because he made it possible for her to succeed in the quest Hermes sent them on. Because he made it possible for her to succeed at her ambitions, saved her life and saved her home (camp half blood).
I cannot express how much I hate her for this. Forget how shitty she is to Percy throughout the books, and Rachel in botl. This is by far the worse, hands down. I cannot believe that there are fans that stan her and disregard this saying "oH sHe'S jUsT 13 yEaRs oLd WiTh TrAuMa! sHe DoEsN't KnOw BeTtEr!"
Like no. She should've apologized for her actions. To Tyson's face - because it was Tyson she hurt (not Percy). If she did that on screen; then she would be fine. It would've made for an awesome character growth moment. But she never does. The only change in her mentality was Tyson is not a monster because he's useful and willing to die to protect Percy (and her by extension).

Spoilers for the Percy Jackson TV show and books:
I have actually loved all the little changes and additions they've been adding to the story omg. Since Rick is actually heavily involved with everything, it feels like he's editing the story he wrote over a decade ago, and as the author that must be SO satisfying. He's leaning so much harder into the narrative parallel between Percy and Luke. Granted, it has been a while since I've read (and reread) the series, but it seems like Percy is much angrier at his dad for abandoning him (and his mother, especially). The whole scene where Percy says in his prayer to his mom "I'm gonna make him come down here and see me, and to see us"? I feel like we didn't get kind of anger from Percy until later in the series, and damn it feels good it see! Like yeah, Percy, you should be fucking mad! Also, emphasizing the connection to his mom (I'm Sally Jackson's son!) and refusing to go on the quest for a father that never did jack shit for him, even at the cost of the world? this perfectly shows how much of a problem and a threat the gods consider Percy later down the line. This kid is rebellious, stubborn, and will not be pushed around by the gods - the way he was being yelled at my Dionysus to take the quest and that little 12 yr old boy just yelled right back at him??? King shit. Percy is motivated by love, not power, not glory, and the gods can't help but feel threatened by that. He'll save the world, but not for the gods or even the rest of humanity, but on the off chance that he'll see his mother again. God I love this series.

I love how they mentioned that Procrustes is a son of Poseidon, and that he still gets to live as Hades' guard dog, killing travelers that Hermes sends despite being a murderous freak but Percy is going to punished for the crime of being born and a crime that he's framed for, and wouldn't logically make sense for him to do.

I don't want to say it.
I don't want to say it.
I don't want to say it.
...FRICK! I have to say it...The MOVIE did the Lotus Hotel part of the book better...
It's treated more as a trap that none of the characters expected, and does well enough in showing how they're ALL vulnerable to the effects, not just one of them. It also works well modernizing the lotus myth by showing how the characters get sucked in to the addiction and fun of a Vegas casino. It's not PERFECT, but the movie understands the assignment better where the show is distracted by setting up stuff that should be saved for FUTURE seasons. Like going deep into Luke and Hermes' relationship or Grover's desire to find Pan. It's...FINE. I get why they needed to do this. But in terms of adapting that part of the story...the movie's better than the show.

My thoughts while watching the Pilot of PJO
Okay I'm going to be honest: I kind of wanted to come into this show blind, so I didn't even see the trailer until it came on TV today and WOW autism activated ANYWAYS
Here's my pretty much? Spoiler free thoughts on the episode
hehe backstory
that was over... fast
*gasp* Grover you bitch
mmm soundtrack
BLUE
Sally my queen
oh my god YES I'm so glad they give Percy context EARLY
GROVER LOST HIS PANTSSSSS
Grover is so. chill? I'm waiting for him to snap
MYTHOMAGIC
listen y'all the minotaur gave me literal nightmares as a kid but I think I can say I'll pull through this time
walker is going to be a STAR
Okay I didn't like that minotaur fight at first but it got itself back to where it needed to be
LEAH
UGH the art on the end credits is so good
Despite having a faster pace than the book, nothing felt as...urgent? But I think it felt that way because percy was getting explanations more BEFORE things happened instead of AFTER, which is nice. Poor lad needs a break.
Anyways, I LOVED it, and you can tell how much love was put into the show. I CANNOT wait to keep watching, and meet all the other characters and pick my obsession right where I left off.

I know some people are upset about Gabe not being physically abusive in the TV show for Percy Jackson, but I think it's a change that makes sense.
This is a show geared toward younger audiences - which means morally difficult decisions made by protagonists aren't as prevalent because, you know, kids take what they're shown at face value. If this was geared toward older audiences, they could trust the viewers to critically examine Sally's decision to get with/stay with Gabe despite his abuse, but that's just not the case here. Honestly, the whole 'woman submitting to an abusive man/authority figure for their kid' is a pretty common thing in older kids fiction and I'm glad we're moving away from that - just like we're moving away from showing antagonists are bad by them being ugly or fat (see Echidna in the book).
Having the lesson 'staying with a physically abusive partner for your kid is good, actually' might not be the best message to send, especially since the show just didn't have the time to really delve into that this season, and let's be honest, it doesn't really come up much more in the rest of the series - nothing more than what they could still bring up in the fact that Gabe drank a lot and wasn't a pleasant person to be around.
I think giving representation to kids who grew up in explicitly abusive situations is important, but I also think it needs to be done carefully and with enough time and focus to make sure that the kids that the story is geared toward are understanding and not taking the lesson 'it's heroic to subjugate yourself to abuse for someone else'. Adults can have mature conversations about that - children can't, not in the format/time the show had for it.
I definitely wish they had explained why Sally was with Gabe at all in the TV show as her marrying him just to use him like that is morally questionable in and of itself. Those who didn't read the books are probably left still very confused about that since it wasn't even like Sally was financially dependent on him, he was just there to be the classic 'evil step-parent' to the downtrodden protagonist kid without much more depth than that. But honestly, I think that's better than a super abusive one-dimensional character that's just tossed out at the end of the season without much more going into it.
tldr: Kids fiction is evolving and treating issues like staying with an abusive partner a bit more carefully now, so if the show didn't have the time to focus on that story beat, I'm glad they didn't half-ass it and inadvertently push a really harmful lesson onto the young kids the show was geared toward.

Minor spoilers for pjo show
First episode of pjo show was mostly good, but I feel like I’m the only one a little underwhelmed. For example, the Minotaur scene. The movie may not be accurate, but I felt the intensity of the scene. With the tv show, something was off. The acting was good, the cgi was good, much more accurate to the book as well but I didn’t feel the intensity I should’ve felt and I don’t think it has anything to do with already knowing what’s coming. I think the tv Percy actor is better at acting than movie Percy actor (nothing against Logan lerman) yet somehow I was fully aware I was watching the show. I didn’t get enamored with it. Only saw first episode so I desperately hope the rest of the episodes are better. I don’t mind any of the small changes they made in the first episode. It’s all about the lack of intensity and tone being off

PJO TV Show Live Reactions Part 3
I'm out of Chocolate chip cookies, but I did have cereal and I'm ready for Medusa
Oh, and this is not spoiler free for the books and possible future TV show events
Oh the attic is creepy and the oracle is creepier I love it.
Ah Baby's first Quest and Oracle Visitation
Oh they didn't show the rest of the prophecy. Interesting? I'm not sure why exactly, I guess so we can find out later?
Oh he's actually choosing his companions. Oh he didn't wait for Annabeth that was cute.
Wait so Blackjack is just...at Camp? Does Luke steal him later?
Poor Grover on scooper duty. Of course Percy would choose him tho.
Oh! Ok there's the prophecy. He's worried about the friend betrayal. I don't if he thinks it will be Annabeth, since he had that little speech about trusting her to do what was needed to be done?
I love the Poseidon Cabin its so pretty! There's a water feature!
Oh. Hello. Luke
Oh I like the animation on the shows that's cute.
Oh. Yeah. I knew Percy was considering Luke. I'm so glad he chose Grover, who knows how that would have turned out. It...probably would be really bad actually.
Wait. Something I've never actually considered of before, can Grover talk to Thalia's spirit that's in the tree? Does the tree have a dryad? Don't all tree's have dryads? But Thalia's is a special tree. Huh.
Percy be nice! Before Annabeth smacks you lol, Thalia is a bit of a touchy subject, though I understand the comment of gods and saving Thalia.
Oh, we've cut out Argus?
Oh Annabeth is being difficult but it's kind of adorable. Grover...what are you doing? I mean, its adorable, but what?
Never split the party!
Hello old Mrs. Dodds. Annabeth, don't antagonize the fury
Oh, HoO foreshadowing?
Wait Percy, why bring the shoes in a box? Instead of wearing them or giving them to Grover?
"I didn't even know New Jersey had forests, but we found one!" Walker Scobell has somehow harvested the spirit of Percy Jackson, I fear he may be unstoppable
Pfft Oh Percy, you think you can just...call a goddess?
Grover the vegetarian is investigating someone cooking hamburgers on a Satyr path. Ok
Oh the statues actually look pretty cool
Hello again, Mrs Dodds
Oh, we've got her actually name now, cool. Hello Auntie Em. I'm really liking the actress already
Oh we aren't beating around the bush ok Hello Medusa
Ok, so far I'm loving this version of Medusa, but I wonder if we well get the meta commentary on how monsters take out grudges on the children of the gods, since she at least claims she won't do that to Annabeth. In this, did Annabeth get tormented by spiders
Annabeth, don't antagonize the gorgon
Medusa's story time! I'm glad they kept that she was a priestess for Athena, but they took out the screwing around in Athena's temple, or did I misunderstand that? Or maybe that's what Annabeth is talking about, calling her a liar? IDK there have been many versions of that story, including one that paints Poseidon in a very bad light and Athena in an even worse one so...
Oh, what are you offering Medusa? This is creepy and I love it
Creepy basement full of statues. Lovely
I'm not sure if I love or hate that Medusa is still beautiful in this instead of ugly
Oh the invisibility hat! That's smart!
Love that they used it against Alecto
But I'm still waiting for Percy to be Impertinent
Uncle Ferdinand! :(
Bury it in the basement? That's not impertinent. And would lose Annabeth her hat. Thank you Grover, they both need to hear this, I love Grover.
Ah, there it is. The betrayl line. It makes sense it would bother him during this quest.
Oh so Percy and Annabeth had monsters trying to turn them on eachother, is it Grover's turn? Will it be the Pink Poodle Gloriosa?
Ah. There's the impertinence. I love sending the head to Olympus, but I'm not sure how I'm going to feel about using that head against Gabe, he doesn't seem very abusive in this version, though abusers don't always go 100 % all the time so I guess we'll see
Percy is singing the song!!! These kids are too cute for this dangerous quest
Hermes! Oh are we going to see the delivery next episode? At least Hermes seems amused.
I like the ending song, and the credits still slaps

*sigh* Unfortunately, Hotel California did NOT get featured in the newest Percy Jackson episode. Unless I missed it in the background (might have to rewatch to specifically listen for it). Ah well. At least we got Levitating by Dua Lipa and I Ran (So Far Away) by A Flock of Seagulls 🤷‍♀️ two more iconic songs. I feel like I Ran is especially on point for Hermes, so bonus points for that.

PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS DISNEY + (2023) SPOILERS AHEAD
Okay, I watched the first two episodes of the series...and I have....thoughts.
ALSO THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK SERIES, SO IF YOU'RE WAITING TO READ THE BOOKS UNTIL AFTER THE SHOW, BE WARNED
I don't remember everything I reacted to, but here are some major ones. I'm going to start off with the negative points because I need to get them off my chest, so if you don't want to read the negativity, then here is your warning to leave.
My first issue has always been with the casting.
The main issue that Percy is blond. I'm biased because the POWER dark haired Percy held over all the fangirls because the black hair, green eyes combo had them (myself included) in a chokehold. Like, Percy Jackson is literally the basis for my type in men. Dark hair, green eyes. Also, Sally says that Percy looks like his father in the books, so what's Poseidon going to look like.
Also Luke is brunette, and he's supposed to be blond, which is significant because he's, like, the perfect all-American boy with a white house in Connecticut. He's met his dad, unlike the other campers, and he's a white blond boy with an athletic build and blue eyes. His main thing is that he CHOSE this life despite having it better than many other campers. Also, there are MANY parallels to (Heroes of Olympus Spoilers) Jason in the Heroes of Olympus. They are basically foils of each other. Luke is kinda like Jason's evil twin. Because Jason is also the all-American blond boy with blue eyes who had reason to go rogue (being abandoned by his mother), but he didn't.
AND, there's supposed to be a stark contrast between Jason and Thalia with her having dark hair and him having blond, but they share the same eyes. So, either Jason and Luke aren't going to look alike, or Jason is going to look different, and defeats the purpose of his contrast with Thalia.
Another issue I had was with the characterization
Many things felt wrong, and it took me several hours to realize they made everyone WAY more confident than normal.
In the books, a constant struggle (even into HoO) is that Percy is always seen in a certain light and even when he's accomplished things, internally he thinks "I'm not as great as you think, guys". He's always been self-conscious about his abilities, his leadership, his authority, and even his appearance. But in the tv show he's like "I'm gonna find my dad and MAKE him notice me because he owes me that much". Percy has always believed that people think he's better than he is and that he will let them down. He constantly compares himself to Luke and Jason.
Annabeth is also more sure of herself. In the books she acts tough, but it's to cover up the fact that she's had to prove herself her whole life to be worth something. She has to prove to her mom/Chiron that she is worthy enough to go on a quest, she had to prove that she could be head counselor, and she struggled with people underestimating her (appearances aside, because those still can be said with Leah as the actress). She's always felt like she needed to do better and achieve more to fully feel her worth.
And Grover in the books is supposed to be timid and awkward. And he makes jokes in poor taste because he's nervous, and usually he's described as anxious, but they don't show that in the tv show. He eats tin cans and furniture when he's nervous. He doesn't believe that Percy should trust him, and he's still holding onto the guilt from Thalia (Though more of this could be shown through the next few episodes). He always thinks that Annabeth and Percy would be better without him.
ANOTHER THING. They took out Grover's crutches because he's supposed to walk weird due to him being a satyr, so he uses braces/crutches. I hate to say it, but man, even the MOVIES had that little bit of lore. I know, I know, it would've been hard to show in that time span, but come on.
Even Sally has a huge character arc which goes from putting up with her Gabe, though with some quiet acts of rebellion--blue food--to turning him to stone with the head of Medusa in the end. But in the tv series, she yells back and gets into verbal disagreements with him boldly. She's portrayed as having more power than she did in the book. Like, in the book, she convinced Gabe to let them take the car out very gently and with bribing him with his favorite dip, almost how you would act around a bomb, being careful what she said because both she and Percy knew that he could
*trigger warning* fly off the handles and abuse them if he was feeling a certain way. He's stated to have hit her before. THAT IS A TRAUMA RESPONSE *trigger warning end*
But in the tv show, she seems more...girl-boss-ish. She raises her voice to meet his. I don't know. To me, Sally has always been, quietly strong. Like a stone. She isn't loud like a firework, though she can be, but she has the determination that isn't heard but seen. Also they had her (who canonically listens to like the White Stripes) listen to "logical" by Olivia Rodrigo…like what? I'm hoping that was just background music and not what she was actually listening to.
Gabe also just felt...off. I think it's because Disney can't show physical abuse because it's Disney, so they had to make him seem like a jerk a different way, but he kinda just felt like a bum, rather than someone who actively bullied Percy. Like, he tried to coerce Percy into giving him poker money in the book. He's also hurt Percy and told Percy not to tell his mother or else it would be worse. Like, Gabe is seriously TERRIBLE.
The last thing I had issues with was plot points that were changed when they could have been kept
Luke had a weird obsession with glory, that I don't really understand. That was even their capture the flag chant.
The whole bathroom scene was WRONG because Annabeth was the one who was supposed to be showing him around camp, and she was with him with Clarisse dragged him into the bathroom during their tour. I don't understand why they pushed back Annabeth and Percy's official meeting as far as they did.
I admit, the scene where Percy was supposed to be on watch but was instead doing the floss dance, sleeping, looking at a gecko was entertaining, but in the novel he was more nervous than anything.
Also, they took out the hellhound scene (after they win capture the flag but before Percy gets claimed)...which in the grand scheme of things probably wasn't that bad, but it sets up for Luke's betrayal later. Because monsters can't get beyond the border unless someone summons them, and it's revealed at the end of book that Luke summoned the hellhound that attacked Percy, and that's the catalyst for sending Percy on the quest.
This one, I will acknowledge for saving time and not drawing it out, but the whole scene where Sally was explaining what a demigod felt wrong. Percy is confused for a good portion of the novel because he's trying to figure stuff out, but it seems like he gets a crash course in demigodliness from Sally, and that takes out his utter confusion.
Also, Grover was supposed to be passed out during the Minotaur scene, and Percy has to drag him up the hill. There was a major point of the Council of the Cloven Elders shaming Grover for being unconscious while taking his ward into camp. AND GROVER doesn't know what happened to Sally. Why was that plot point in there. It was supposed to be motivation for Percy to go on the quest, but, like, the whole reason was because Chiron didn't believe camp was safe, due to the aforementioned hellhound.
EDIT: ALSO THE SCENE WITH MRS. DODD'S WAS WEIRD. In the book, she took him into a different part of the museum so it would be easier for her to attack him without people around. But in the series...it just happened. And Mr. Brunner gave him the pen long before. I wanted the scene where he came in and said "what ho! Percy" and threw him the pen. AND, there wasn't the bit where Mr. Brunner was asking the class questions about Kronos and his kids and Percy answers, giving more foreshadowing to his Greek myth heritage. And the aftermath where Grover lies about what Percy did to Nancy Bobofit. It made the rift between them seem so much bigger.
Edit (2): I DON'T LIKE HOW THEY TOOK OUT THE NECTAR AND AMBROSIA SCENE. That scene was so cute because he's a mama's boy and he's like "they taste like my mom's chocolate chip cookies".
Edit (3): I hope this is the last one, but I keep remembering stuff. The weird cut scenes where commercials would go if it were on TV. Those transitions could be smoother, and the "cut to black" is just really abrupt, and it kinda kills the vibe.
Edit (4): I really really hope this is the last one. But the only thing I have against Gabe not having a job and only playing poker online (though I like how it just makes him seem like more of pathetic loser), is that we can't have that scene from the end of The Lightning Thief book. Where Percy gets on national television, puts on a whole act of getting choked up and the, wait I need to find the quote:
“All I want,” I said, choking back my tears, “Is to see my loving stepfather again. Everytime I saw him on TV, calling me a delinquent punk, I knew… somehow… we would be okay. And I know he’ll want to reward each and every person in this beautiful city of Los Angeles with a free major appliance from his store. Here’s the phone number.”
THIS SCENE IS A NEED.
Okay, this is getting long, so I'll do the positive things in another post. I'm sure there are other things that bothered me, but I can't remember them right now.
