au where instead of Jason taking on the name of Robin after Dick, he makes his own name. He tries to go by Blue Jay, but Bruce is like Absolutely Not, because that's a risk. He picks Cardinal.
Cardinal dies just the same.
Along comes little Tim Drake, an avid fan of Batman, Robin, and his hero Cardinal. He picks up the mantle. He is Blue Jay, remembering the fallen sidekick. This is when the nickname for all of them really sets in - the Songbirds, the brightness at Batman's side.
Damian's next. He wants Shrike at first, but Dick says no, because it's not only overused by villains, but it's not true to the Songbirds. Damian settles on Blackbird in the end.
I'm not sure about Steph's run, actually. Either she really fills in for Tim as Blue Jay, or she makes her own temporary name as Starling.
