Is his life ever going to get back to normal?

BIOGRAPHY

Unlike Mallymkun and David Hatter, Jackson didn’t have a family to rely on. The Knaves were little more than betrayers and thieves, and everyone in Wonderland looked down on them. He spent the first half of his life trying, to no avail, to prove he wasn’t like that, and the second half trying to forget where he’d come from. The King’s army was the only option for someone like him, and he waited impatiently for the day he came of age, certain that this was his one chance to turn things around.

He wasn’t wrong. Jack was quick to learn and worked twice as hard as any other soldier. The only one that even came close to rivaling him in skill was Molly. He hadn’t counted on falling for her. It didn’t factor into his plans to make a better name for himself, but for a while, he thought maybe he could have both. Love and career didn’t necessarily cancel each other out, and it wasn’t like she held him back. If anything, they made each other better.

When the Red Queen began to take power, he refused to hear Molly’s concerns about whether or not she was a threat. He’d sworn to serve the royalty of Wonderland: it was the thing that had pulled him out of a dead-end life and given him purpose, even renown. It wasn’t just his cause; it was his identity. Young as he was, the Queen made him the commander of her army, and Molly vanished. He’d been wrong. He couldn’t have love and recognition, and when it came down to it, he chose his ambition.

The next time he saw his former love, she was hours away from being beheaded for rebelling against the Queen. It was Jack’s idea, a whisper in the Queen’s ear, that maybe beheading was too good for one such as her. He suggested she live powerless instead, and the Queen’s fondness for vicious justice did the rest. Truthfully, he couldn’t just stand by and watch Molly be killed, even if he knew he’d have preferred death had the situation been reversed. He couldn’t change what had happened between them–even if he could have turned back the clock, he suspected he’d have made exactly the same choices–but he could do her this one kindness in saving her life.

He’d always been calm in a crisis, and when they were swept into a new world, Jackson kept his head. Like the Red Queen, he was quick to take power where he could get it, and with a little help on her end, he quickly moved to Chief of Police in Fableton, in spite of the fact that there may have been older and more qualified candidates. He does his job well though, and while it isn’t quite commander of the King’s army, he’s content so long as he never has to hear the name ‘Knave’ again.

CONNECTIONS

Valerie Heart: He’s still her man. She helped him get his position at Fableton PD, and if she occasionally needs a favor from him, he figures he owes her at least that much.

Molly McKellan: He knows where she is and what she’s been up to, but he hasn’t approached her. He isn’t sure if it’s because he doesn’t want to draw Valerie’s attention to her (a wasted effort, to be sure) or because he knows the truth would just make things worse.

Guy Gisborne: He’s quite aware that the other officer hates him for taking the job he wanted, which is a shame, as they have a lot in common. In another world, they might have been friends, but in this one, Jackson is constantly waiting for the knife in his back.
