La Cisterna del Parco Gülhane

La cisterna all'interno del Parco Gülhane risale al V-VII secolo. Forse potrebbe risalire anche all'epoca dell'imperatore Adriano (117-138) come parte dell'acquedotto di Adriano.

Ha una pianta rettangolare 17 x 12 metri ed una profondit￠ di 7 metri. Presenta 12 colonne (3 file di 4 colonne) con capitelli corinzi, che sostengono una serie di volte.

La sua funzione è incerta, ma potrebbe essere collegata all'orfanotrofio di Hagia Paulos .

La Cisterna dopo secoli di abbandono venne "scoperta" ai primi del '900 per poi essere utilizzata come acquario ed aperta al pubblico dal 1954 fino al 2001, in quello che era il "Gülhane zoo". Dopo la chiusura dello zoo tra il 2003-2004 ed i lavori di ristrutturazione del parco, la cisterna é stata restaurata ed aperta nuovamente al pubblico.
