Burji Lhamo (Ega), the goddess that blesses child and protects them.
Burji Lhamo is a Buddhist goddess known for granting children, ensuring safe childbirth, enhancing a child's mental abilities, fostering harmony between spouses, and promoting love and unity within the family.
The color of her body is like the radiance of 100,000 suns on the snowy summit of Mount Meru. She has one face and two hands. The red-brown hair on the head stands on end, on the top of the head the moon disc burns, on the navel - the sun, its right ear is decorated with a lion, the left one - a snake. In her right hand she holds a precious vessel filled with nectar, which heals women who are unable to give birth to a child and gives babies a long life. Pressing to her chest, Burji Lhamo holds the child - the main symbol of motherhood and the fact that she fully protects children.
In the other hand she holds a mongoose, regurgitating jewelry, a vessel with nectar of a long life and a vase with five delighting objects.
Around Tara's left foot is a chain that represents affection for children, love and care. She'll never leave them. She won't be distracted. She won't forget. Will keep them and give their blessing, increasing their mental abilities, talents and giving them good health.
She is an aspect of Palden Lhamo and Green Tara and her mantra is given below which is good to recite to receive her blessing and protection to your children:
MA BHYO: SA MA YA BHYO: RU LU RU LU BHYO: RU RU NAG MO MA SHA NI: TSA PA LA LHA MO YA MA DU HRING: YA GA RU MA DZAH DZA:

I learned about the deity Palden Lhamo for the first time today and I’m amazed.
Tumblr media
“Palden Lhamo means "Glorious Goddess" and can feature a wide range of wrathful female protectors and dakinis. Usually, Palden Lhamo refers to the Gelugpa version of her as a wrathful emanation of Saraswati, otherwise known as Magzor Gyalmo and Remati.
Magzor Gyalmo was said to be named Remati during the time she was married to the evil king of Lanka, both of them rakshasas according to one version. Remati vowed that if she failed to convert the king to Buddhism and dispel his wickedness, she would end his dynasty. She tried many times to convert him to avoiding the killing of dharma practitioners, but failed along with their son being raised to kill Buddhists. With no choice, she slaughtered her son while her husband was out hunting. She ate her son's flesh, drank his blood with his skull as a kapala or cup, and flayed his skin to make a saddle. Thus, she escaped out towards the north. Just as she left on a mule, the king returned and found out about his son's murder. Enraged, he shot the rump of the mule that Remati was riding. In response, Remati healed the wound and transformed it into an eye by stating, "May the wound of my mount become an eye large enough to watch over the twenty-four regions, and may I myself be the one to extirpate the lineage of the malignant kings of Lanka!" There, she traveled onwards through India to Tibet to China to Mongolia and was said to have finally settled down on the mountain, Oikhan in eastern Siberia.
When she died, she was reborn in hell and fought her way out of the hell, stealing a bag of diseases and a sword. When she escaped to the charnel grounds, she found no peace and prayed to the Buddha for a reason to live. The Buddha Vajradhara (tantric Shakyamuni) appeared before her and requested her to protect the dharma. Astonished, Remati agreed and thus arose as the dharmapala she is, only using her weapons against enemies of Buddhism. She was also appointed as a guardian of dharma by Yama, lord of death. Her retinue consists of the lion-headed dakini Simhamukha (Sengdongma) behind her and the Makara-headed dakini Makaravaktra holding the reins of the mule in front of Palden Lhamo. Surrounding them are the 4 Goddesses of the Seasons, the 5 Sisters of Long Life, and the 12 Tenma goddesses.”

In the rich tapestry of Buddhist tradition, Dharma protectors play a vital role as guardians and defenders of the teachings of the Buddha and its practitioners. Rooted in both ancient scripture and contemporary practice, these beings are revered for their commitment to safeguarding the integrity and propagation of Buddhist wisdom.
Origins and Nature
Dharma protectors, known as "chos skyong" in Tibetan Buddhism, are entities—often depicted as deities, spirits, or celestial beings—that have taken vows to protect the Dharma, the teachings of the Buddha. They are believed to possess various degrees of supernatural powers and are enlisted to ward off obstacles, dispel negativity, and guide practitioners along the path to enlightenment.
Classification
Dharma protectors can be broadly classified into two categories: mundane and wisdom Dharma protectors.
1. Mundane Dharma Protectors : These are virtuous beings within the cycle of samsara who have made vows to protect the Dharma. They may include deities from various cultural and religious backgrounds who, out of compassion and devotion, have pledged their assistance to Buddhist practitioners.
2. Wisdom Dharma Protectors : These are considered emanations of enlightened beings such as Buddhas or Bodhisattvas. They embody the wisdom and compassion of these enlightened figures and are specifically tasked with protecting the Dharma and its practitioners. Examples include Mahakala, Palden Lhamo, and Dorje Shugden.
Roles and Functions
Dharma protectors fulfill a range of roles within Buddhist practice:
- Guardianship : They safeguard practitioners from spiritual and worldly obstacles, ensuring that they can progress on their path to enlightenment unhindered.
- Assistance : Dharma protectors are often invoked during rituals, prayers, and meditations to provide guidance, blessings, and support.
- Dispelling Negativity : They are believed to have the power to dispel negative energies, forces, and influences that may obstruct spiritual progress.
- Teaching and Guidance : Some Dharma protectors are also considered teachers who impart wisdom, empowerments, and instructions to practitioners.
Iconography and Symbolism
Dharma protectors are typically depicted in art and iconography adorned with symbolic attributes and ornaments. Their appearances often convey aspects of their enlightened nature, ferocious demeanor, and protective qualities. For example, wrathful expressions signify their ability to subdue obstacles and enemies of the Dharma, while symbolic weapons and implements represent their power to overcome adversities.
Devotion and Practice
Devotion to Dharma protectors is widespread in various Buddhist traditions, particularly in Tibetan Buddhism, where elaborate rituals and ceremonies are conducted to honor and invoke their blessings. Practitioners may offer prayers, incense, flowers, and other offerings as gestures of reverence and gratitude.
Controversies and Debates
Despite their revered status, Dharma protectors have been a subject of controversy and debate within some Buddhist communities. Questions surrounding their origins, practices, and sectarian affiliations have led to differing opinions and interpretations among scholars and practitioners.
Conclusion
Dharma protectors occupy a central place in Buddhist cosmology and practice, serving as guardians, guides, and benefactors to those who seek refuge in the Dharma. Whether viewed as mundane beings or manifestations of enlightened wisdom, their presence underscores the enduring commitment to preserving and disseminating the profound teachings of the Buddha for the benefit of all sentient beings.

Palden Lhamo has orange-brown hair, with 9 peacock feathers above her head. Her exposed fangs gnaw on a human corpse, and she has an intimidating stare with three blood-shot bulging eyes. These eyes represent her ability to see into the past, present, and future.
Her dark blue colour represents her attainment of great bliss and realisation of emptiness. Her body is smeared with ashes, fat, and blood. Her entire form is surrounded by flames, representing her presence in the charnel grounds.
The skull cup of blood in her right hand symbolises the destruction of obstacles. In her left hand, she holds a sandalwood club with a vajra to watch over the oath-bound, ensuring their dedication and integrity in upholding the Dharma.
She carries a bag of diseases that she collects from those who invoke her to help cure health-related illnesses. Her other hand releases them to plague those who commit evil actions.
Her legs are in a semi-relaxed posture, and a chain connects one ankle to the other. She sits on a horse/mule whose fearful shrieks sound like thunder.
She has a sun disc at her navel and a crescent moon above her head. She wears a black scarf and flayed human skin as a shawl.
Her upper garments are made from black fabric, and her skirt is made from tiger skin, held together by a belt made of snakes. Her crown is adorned by five skulls and bone ornaments such as bracelets and ankles, and she wears a garland of freshly decapitated heads.
Her horse reins are made of poisonous snakes, wrapped around the human skin saddle. Snakes dangling from the horse hold a pouch with a pair of dice used to determine karmic fate, one black and the other white, and a ball of string of rolled up weapons. This represents her ability to grant divinatory powers using dice to those who have received her empowerment. She also carries a red tablet used to cast spells tucked into her belt.
