Lemme share a lil update

So, a thing that happened in the years I was away from Tumblr was that I adopted a pigeon from a breeder in 2021. Her name was Elia, she was a German Nun pigeon and she was my world. I absolutely loved her. Though she started out wanting nothing to do with me, she eventually warmed up to me and became incredibly cuddly and kept seeking me out. If I went to the kitchen, it usually wouldn't take long for her to come flying after me

Unfortunately, she became ill in June 2023, aka this year, and very quickly got bad enough, that it took her life. I was devastated and needed time to recover from the loss During this time, my mom let me lay Elia to rest in her garden, which has become so beautiful with lots of flowers and a birdbath with ceramic pigeons on the edge

Since then, I've been recovering and getting used to not having her around anymore. But recently, I started getting the feeling that I missed having a companion around. So I looked around and found that a nearby shelter had gotten a lil guy in Today I went to the shelter to visit him and see if I was ready to take on a new pigeon. And well. Let's just say, a new chapter has been started

Meet Swip! My new pet pigeon

He seems to be an owl pigeon, potentially a German Owl, but he was found ownerless and doesn't seem to have a ring, so the shelter had very little information on him. Nor do I know his age. But that's okay, he just fine as he is (I also don't know his gender, but the shelter kept saying he, so he's a he till proven otherwise)

I keep seeing people on Beau Post say that fluffy = happy and. no. it very much does not. so here's a visual reference for anyone curious.

No puff (neutral)

Smallpuff (comfy) - note the relaxed body language and lowered wings.

Bigpuff (defensive) - note the tension in her body (tense wings, head pulled toward the body). Most pigeons will do this around the nest when they see a threat (in this case it was a chicken who wasn't anywhere near her and didn't even try anything, but Beau is a very defensive nester) and it usually is followed by a nasty wing slap and/or a bite.

You will also see pigeons stretch their necks out and flatten all their feathers when scared and ready to run, but nesting birds will usually pick fight over flight.

Luzon Bleeding Heart

Don't worry, this guy isn't actually bleeding out. Thats just his plumage! They endemic to the island of Luzon in the Philippines. In Tagalog, their name is Punay, and they aren't the only kind of dove with this feature. Other birds in the same genus, called Gallicolumba which means "bleeding-hearts" also have this feature. Jonny: A shrike. Small, violent little critters. OR a chicken, because the cannibalism thing. (I also just think it’s really funny.)

Ashes: Whistling kite! They (along with a few other species) take burning sticks from forest fires and spread it to flush out prey. Arsonist bird, just like Ashes!

Drumbot Brian: Canada goose, since they travel long distances (like a pilot might!) this is also one of the birds that just Is Them. Just look at him. Look me in the eyes and tell me that man isn’t a goose. Soft, round, they look good to hold but they’re simultaneously full of violence.. silly goose Brian….

Raphaella: Wandering albatross. Yet another one who really truly just is. Look at that bird. It's her.

Marius: Common kingfisher! He's the one who originally sparked this idea, after we saw a picture of one and immediately got slammed by the idea of anthro bird mechs. The colors. Just look. That bird is Him.

Ivy: Rock ptarmigan, pigeon, or a mourning dove. She's just a soft round bird like Brian. They all have fitting coloration in a way, too.

Toy Soldier: European nightjar. The freaks my one true love. Nightjars look so fake., like they’re one of those puppet animal plushies you put your hand in to move the mouth.

Tim: Steller's jay. He inexplicably reminds me of one, similar mannerisms and everything. Tim is really truly such a corvid, also considered a blue jay for him. Deep down in my heart of hearts Gunpowder is a seabird like an osprey or petrel, though I have no reasoning for those ones.

Nastya: Eurasian magpie. Shiny blue smart bird. Looks mildly disappointed in you. Love u nastya
