For today's Zooly "Chickens" prompt, I chose to draw a barred Plymouth rock because, well, they're FUN to draw! Can you find all the chicks? The Plymouth rock is one of my favorite breeds that I have in my flock. They're great egg-layers, laying around 200 brown eggs a year, but as a dual-purpose bred I also raise a few each year for meat. 100 years ago this was the most popular breed of chicken in the United States. While the exact origin of this breed is a bit contentious, genetic analysis shows the main ancestor of the Plymouth rock is the similarly barred Dominique. Ink pen with Copic markers.

Henry finally stopped brooding... So I can finally spam y'all with new pics!
She's extremely happy to be back out and about. We've got some recovering to do, though. She's somehow hurt her foot (potential vet visit scheduled. We're giving it a week.) but otherwise she seems to be pretty content, even if she's a little skinny after sitting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And of course she's taking post on top of her favorite spider cage. Cuz that's how we roll. Dahlia (the spider) doesn't seem to mind. She enjoys the warmth Henry gives off.
Eva is still a bratty little martial artist. We've started working on hand training, but she's having absolutely NONE of it. She'll take the treats from you but once they're gone she's like
Tumblr media
So no pictures for now, but we're getting there. We just have to get past this fear of human hands. We've traded enclosures so Eva can have the aviary since she can't come out until she hand trains so I can keep her from hitting the floor. Henry spends just about all of her free time out and the aviary is empty except at night so it didn't make sense to keep Eva in the smaller cage.
Eva's definitely happier now, and Henry is elated to get cuddle time again instead of feeling obligated to infertile eggs.
And that's the update!

A study that just came out demonstrates that outdoor cats are known to prey on over two thousands species of wild animal, from mammals to birds to insects. That includes 347 species that are endangered, threatened or otherwise of concern, and they've been a key factor of the permanent extinction of over 60 species. And while cats may not always bring home what they catch, chances are if your cat is allowed to roam unsupervised outside, they're killing your local wildlife.
Why is this so important? Worldwide, wild animal populations have decreased in number by 69% in the past fifty years; that means that in my lifetime (born in 1978), the sheer number of wild animals in the world has been decreased by over half. Even "common" wild species are less numerous than before. While habitat population is the single biggest cause of species endangerment and extinction overall, outdoor and indoor/outdoor cats are a significant cause as well. In fact, they are the single biggest cause of human-caused mortality in wild birds.
Most importantly, it's very, very simple to fix this problem: keep your cats indoors, and spay and neuter them. If your cat is bored, they need more enrichment, and there are plenty of ways to make your home more exciting for them, from bringing home cardboard boxes for them to explore, to playing with them more often. If you want your cat to get some outdoor enrichment, leash train them (yes, it can be done!) If you have the space and resources, build them a catio where they can be safe from outdoor dangers like predators and cars, while also keeping local wildlife safe from them.
If you just give into their whining and pawing at the door, then they know that that's what they have to do to get their way; I know it's a tough transition, but it's worth it in the end for everyone involved. Cats are domesticated, which means they are not native anywhere in the world; there are exactly zero ecosystems in which they belong, save for the safety of your home. It is your responsibility to give them an enriching environment without taking the shortcut of letting them go wreak havoc outside.

I think it's so adorable that early humans took wild gourds - a tiny fruit that hollows out as it dries, making it float - and decided to make something out of it
Tumblr media
they thought the tiny fruit was so good that they bred it for thousands of years, making it larger to form into bowls and cups, and different shapes to become bottles and spoons
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and musical instruments
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, people took the hollow gourds they farmed, and they turned them into houses for birds. We adapted them into the perfect houses for birds, and now there are specific breeds of birdhouse gourd just for making into birdhouses
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And humans dedicated gardening space and time and thousands of years of breeding to make the gourds so absolutely perfect for birds, that there is a species of bird that lives almost exclusively in them

IMPORTANT PIGEON PSA
Tumblr media
If you have a pigeon who is suddenly showing interest in your salt lamps, your cooking, people food, human scabs, tears, ect and in general is trying to eat and lick things your pigeon normal wouldnt I strongly urge you to take a look at your pigeons diet and make sure they are eating a good mineral grit.
Pigeons need more then oyster shell. Oyster shell provides calcium but it doesnt provide the other necessary minerals a pigeon needs to be healthy. If you pigeon is licking salt lamps and trying to eat stuff it shouldn't it may be deficient in multiple minerals and sodium. Especially for female pigeons if this goes on for a long period of time it can lead to leg weakness, higher mortality, and a higher chance of complications associated with egg laying
Sadly due to certain misinformation we have alot of pigeon owners even here on tumblr and other places that dont realize how important grit is. If your not offering a vitamin supplement in the food or water and your also not offering red mineral grit your bird is likely suffering from multiple deficiencies. Think about why pigeon grit is red in the first place, its the iron content. Without grit your pigeon is likely not even getting the iron they need. These multiple deficiencies can impede their health and id imagine it would make it harder to bond and make a connection with your bird.
What to do about it?
Feed your pigeon a red mineral grit as soon as possible!
Buy some grit and start sprinking a tiny bit over their food and slowly increasing the amount they have access to. Birds who are deficient will gorge themselves and that has an impaction risk so you want to start slowly introduce it back into their diet. Eventually you should be able to offer it free choice and the bird will self regulate.
What if you dont have access to pigeon grit? You will want to buy bird vitamins that go over the food or that are added the water.
I also suggest owners to buy a safe source of salt for your birds such as a salt wheel ment for guinea pigs, rabbits, ect. Pigeons will use it for the salt content but it also has beneficial trace minerals as well.
Below the cut ill have some links to some grit and the wheel i was talking about.
I hope this post is able to help people who may not realize their bird is deficient

Donghyuck is still sleeping when you wake up.
He looks peaceful, you think. Not a common sight, you'd even call his sleeping form the eighth wonder because a conscious Donghyuck is never calm. His cheeks are puffy, lips set in a cute pout, hair a royal mess. You thread your fingers through his unruly strands in an attempt to tame them.
Donghyuck's hand is loosely thrown around your waist but you know you couldn't wiggle out of it even if you tried. Not that you want to; it's cozier this way with his legs thrown over yours and body moulded perfectly to fit against your curves.
A few stray rays of light escape through your curtains, forming a magical halo around Donghyuck's face, giving it the softest of glows. Your finger traces his many moles. He looks ethereal like this. You feel an overwhelming amount of love for this man.
You want to protect him, even though the love bites painting his bare torso, the medusa tattoo just above his waist band and his toned biceps don't call for any protection. If anything, your frangible heart is the only thing that requires a lee from the whirlwind that is your boyfriend.
"You're staring babe," and you jump, heart thudding loud and so-not-proud against your chest. The room seems hotter than it was a moment ago, the peaceful ambience destroyed by his usual playfulness. He cracks an eye open and shoots a complacent smirk in your general direction.
"You don't have to scare me like that, you creep!" You huff, embarassed to face him. You try to get out of his hold; an impossible feat because he works out and you don't. So you take refuge among the fulffiness of the many pillows thrown over your bed.
"Says the one who was staring at me," is his smug reply, which earns a slap on his toned chest. Again, he's hardly affected by it. Atleast he has the decency to pretend it hurts.
Your breathing is still audibly heavy from the shock. He runs a placating hand on your back as a quiet apology. "Good morning," he mumbles, nuzzling his nose into your hair.
"Too late for that, don't you think," you spit in lieu of a reply, no real bite in your words. He chuckles, the sound arising from what you can only imagine to be the deepest parts of him, so low, so attractive, so domestic.
He kisses your hair with an obnoxiously loud smack and then giggles like a teenage girl because he's silly like that. Silly and annoying and so, so cute, his existence stimulates your most primal urges; you love him so much your chest hurts.
And you aren't scared to let him know what he does to you. "I love you." It's out of blue, and most definitely not a regular happening. You feel him stiffen, breath catching in his throat and heart beating infinitely faster. The playfulness drains out of him, leaving a sincere man who loves you with his entire being.
His hand on your waist pulls you closer. He kisses you properly this time, lips moving against yours slowly, like he wants to savour this moment as much as you do. When you break the kiss, he rests his forehead on yours, a hand holding your cheek carefully like you are delicate china. Precious. His.
"Me too," he says breathily. Donghyuck is looking at you - your eyes, nose, lips - searching your face. And when he finds what he's looking for, "I love you too, my pretty baby. So, so, so much."
