Congaree National Park! Congaree National Park in South Carolina has the largest remaining bottomland hardwood forest in the United States. Its river floodplain ecosystem, marked by lakes, creeks, and swamps, provides food and shelter for numerous plants and wildlife, including bird species like the Red-tailed Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Barred Owl, Summer Tanager, Red-bellied Woodpecker, and wrens, nuthatches, and warblers. Congaree National Park is also recognized as an Important Bird Area.
Tumblr media
Crater Lake National Park! Oregon’s Crater Lake National Park encompasses the caldera of Crater Lake, which sits atop the Cascade Mountain Range. Its unique landscape covers more than 180,000 acres of protected wilderness, comprised of evergreen forests, mountains, hills, peaks, and lakes. The park is home to many notable birds like the Bald Eagle, American White Pelican, Peregrine Falcon, Western Bluebird, and Rufous Hummingbird, as well as countless warblers, owls, woodpeckers, and flycatchers.
Tumblr media
Cuyahoga Valley National Park! Cuyahoga National Park in northeastern Ohio, near the Cuyahoga River, has a lush landscape of forested wetlands, lakes, streams, and native plants, including more than 90 species of grasses, such as Indian grass and big bluestem. The park provides habitat for 250 bird species, like the Baltimore Oriole, Great Blue Heron, Eastern Bluebird, and Bald Eagle, returning to the park after 70 years, as well as the Red-tailed Hawk, Great Horned Owl, and numerous warblers, vireos, and flycatchers
Tumblr media
Death Valley National Park! As birds migrate along along the eastern edge of California's Sierra Nevada, they're drawn into Death Valley National Park and other regional valleys, where they stop at desert oases to rest. In addition to these seasonal migrants, the park hosts desert species, such as the Greater Roadrunner, Phainopepla, and Cactus Wren, for which the park’s climate is projected to improve through 2050. Warmer summers are likely to challenge the many warblers that pass through, including Wilson’s, MacGillivray's, Yellow-rumped, and Orange-crowned. It is recommended that park managers preserve habitat, reduce impacts from disturbance and nonnative species, and protect sources of water and stream-side vegetation.
Tumblr media
Denali National Park and Preserve! Since the 1950s, Alaska has warmed rapidly—twice as fast as the rest of the United States—and Denali National Park and Preserve’s landscape is keeping pace. As it continues to warm, 40 bird species could move in during summer. By 2050, Denali visitors may see forest birds like Western Tanagers, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks breeding in the park, along with Magnolia, Canada, and other warblers seeking refuge in this cooler, northern forest. To prepare for the potential influx of species, park managers might consider managing for a diversity of habitats accordingly.
Tumblr media
Everglades National Park! Everglades National Park is the most significant breeding ground for wading birds in North America, providing important foraging and breeding habitat for more than 400 species. Located on Florida's peninsula, the park is critical stopover habitat for birds migrating along the Atlantic Flyway, such as the Yellow-throated Warbler. It’s also ground zero for the impacts of rising seas. Accelerating the pace of Everglades restoration is key to giving managers flexibility to cope with extreme weather patterns and climate change, as healthier ecosystems are more resilient.
Tumblr media
Gate of the Arctic National Park and Preserve! Gates of the Artic National Park in Alaska is the northernmost national park in the U.S. Its remote landscape, marked by boreal forests of black and white spruce trees, rivers, and mountains, supports plants and wildlife, and provides a great hiking experience for visitors. Bird species like the Common Loon, drawn to its freshwater lakes, can be found in Gates, as well as the Bald Eagle, Northern Hawk-Owl, Golden Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, and Great Horned Owl.
Tumblr media
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve! Alaska’s Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is characterized by towering mountains, spectacular tidewater glaciers, deep fjords, and lush temperate rainforest. The park’s titular glaciers are certainly being impacted by climate change: There is 11 percent less glacial ice in Glacier Bay today than there was in the 1950s. By mid-century, Glacier Bay could provide important refuge for 24 bird species that are highly sensitive to climate change.
Tumblr media
Glacier National Park! Located in Montana along the Canada–U.S. border, Glacier National Park covers more than a million acres of pristine wilderness. The park has deep forests, sparkling lakes and ponds, mountains, streams, rivers, and creeks; wetlands, swamps, and marshes can also be found here. The park, already a designated Important Bird Area, may serve as an important refuge for 19 bird species that are highly sensitive to climate change across their range by 2050.
Tumblr media
Grand Canyon National Park! By 2050, visitors might find a novel combination of raptors soaring over Arizona's Grand Canyon National Park, a raptor corridor and global Important Bird Area. The White-tailed Kite, Gray Hawk, and Harris's Hawk may colonize the park. Golden and Bald Eagles, however, are expected to decline, with the latter possibly going locally extinct. The park’s pinyon and ponderosa forests could also be stressed by warming and drying conditions, threatening specialist birds like the Pinyon Jay and Pygmy Nuthatch. Much will depend on the continued flows of the Colorado River, where Bald Eagles congregate and hunt, and how that waterway continues to be managed.
