Mind Control In the Wild #2: Prince of Darkness

You might have seen a clip from this one floating around Youtube as a 240p video with a name like "Female Posession 11" (searching random clips of mind control scenes is a rite of passage for hypnofetishists around the world). Prince of Darkness is a profoundly strange and creepy movie that stands out as one of the more underrated films in John Carpenter's filmography. Since Carpenter is the namesake for my own Carpenter State University, it felt appropriate to cover this one.

In Prince of Darkness, Carpenter blends science fiction themes into biblical myth and the product is a cosmic horror story where Jesus Christ was an alien, Satan is a tank of mind controlling goo, and its followers seek to summon an even more powerful apocalypse god from a mirror dimension. Also Alice Cooper commands an army of zombie homeless people. Carpenter is absolutely cooking here.

All of the action takes place in a Catholic monastery in Los Angeles. For Carpenter, it's a return to smaller, less studio-supported filmmaking. The closed setting kind of gives it an "Assault on Precinct 13 but with zombies" vibe. A group of scientists go to the monastery to research a mysterious tank of seemingly sentient goo that a priest discovered in the basement. The scientists quickly learn that the goo is the literal anti-Christ. While alone in the basement, Susan (played by character actor Anne Marie Howard) is summoned before the tank of goo. A jet of liquid suddenly sprays from the tank into her mouth, making her its first convert.

After that, Susan stalks through the monastery converting her fellow scientists in a stretch that includes some absolute hall of fame mind control acting from Howard. If you dig cosmic horror in your mind control stories, there's great content here.

The next to be converted is Lisa, who awakens to find Susan crawling over her in bed with wide, empty eyes. Lisa seems to misinterpret this as a sexual advance, but before she can protest, another jet of liquid shoots out of Susan's mouth and slides down Lisa's throat.

There's this great moment where another scientist finds Lisa repeatedly typing, "I Live!" before Susan pounces from the corner.

The thing is that these scenes are better mind control fetish content as short clips on Youtube than within the greater context of the film. It's not like Ghostbusters where the possession is deliberately sexy and is ultimately a weird detour in a random week of Dana's life. In Prince of Darkness, the converted are essentially zombies, there's quite a bit of gore, and it's unambiguous that they die when the anti-Christ does, which is a bummer if you watch your movies based on how hot the mind control is. You probably shouldn't though, right?

Despite its mid score on the Subliminalbo Scale, this one has actually been really influential for my own smut which is why it was the second thing I thought of when I started this series. The transmission of a sentient mind controlling goo as a fluid from one person to another was a huge inspiration when I was developing Assimilation.

Carpenter explores mind control in quite a few of his movies (some even less sexy than here, like The Thing, which is not mind control but plays with similar tropes that at least makes it mind control adjacent). If you're looking for hot mind control in a John Carpenter movie, Big Trouble In Little China probably has the best example. Though it wasn't a direct influence on my manips, it features whitewash eyes which is pretty cool. The reason I'm talking about Prince of Darkness instead of Big Trouble In Little China is because the former's had a bigger impact on me as a writer (and the mind control in Big Trouble is comparatively brief and less impactful to the story).

It looks like a lot of Prince of Darkness clips have been taken down from Youtube since I was a weird kid starving for mind control content, but you can find the full scene of Susan's possession on there right now. If you're into cosmic horror, I definitely recommend the movie, but I wouldn't call it essential for someone who wants to see some hot mind control.

A guide to real-person shipping and tinhatting

Most of this can be applied to general tinhatting but I will mainly be focusing on RPS and using examples from cockles fandom. This is based on my experience and what I’ve personally come across. Examples I use are merely illustrative and not meant as shade to anyone.

Let’s get some ethics of rps out of the way first

*disclaimer: this is what I would advise, I know opinions on this do vary

Try to keep it off main as much as possible (ie twitter, tiktok). You can’t always escape the algorithm, some stuff does get seen by the actors. Every actor’s comfort level with this is different, but as a general rule let's say tinhatting stays on tumblr or group chats

Try to avoid stating something as truth unless you’re quoting the actors

This goes without saying, but don’t ever mention the ship to the actors and if they bring it up themselves, don’t forget that’s not a free pass to just say whatever

Now, moving on to some pitfalls and tips

Do some basic research

Is this tweet/post reflecting the truth? Do multiple sources confirm this? Is there video? What was the context? What is happening right before and right after this particular moment? Does that change how you think about it?

When you see a picture you haven’t seen before, are you sure it’s not a manip? Use reverse image search and if nothing comes up, try to look up the event using key words to see if you can find the picture. If it’s hard to find and friends can’t help you either, it’s probably a manip. Obviously also look for signs within the picture itself (strange lines/different lighting on one person/missing limbs etc)

Are you projecting?

We all do it! It’s normal, just try to be aware when you’re doing it. Sometimes actors might indeed be similar to you when it comes to [whatever your theory is about], sometimes not at all. Fact remains you’re more likely to run with it when it’s something you do or feel yourself. Try to ask some friends what they would do/how they would react and maybe you’ll find out it’s less common or obvious than you think.

Confirmation bias is one hell of a drug

It’s surprising how easily a pattern can be found if you actively try to find one. Try to keep thinking critically: do I too quickly add something to the list of evidence because I really want my theory to be true? Does it really belong in that pile or could there be another reason why X happened the way it did?

The more effort it requires to make your theory sound plausible, the less likely it is to be true

Does it need a lot of explanation? Are you having to find a lot of excuses when an alternative explanation is presented? Are there inconsistencies in your theory that are difficult to explain away?

These are all red flags and should make you question the validity of your theory.

You as a fan are always going to be far more invested than any of these actors will ever be

Whether it’s about the show they are on or their social media behaviour, you will always care more and inevitably find details that weren’t put there intentionally.

No, the actors aren’t constantly leaving clues about the show you love (“you’re not crazy” tweets aside) in their everyday posts, they are just living their lives and sharing it.

And no, actors aren’t hiding secret and very obscure messages in their posts about how their relationship is real. They will simply quote Casablanca on the other person’s birthday and assume you get the memo

Remember they aren’t as obsessed with us as we are with them

This ties into the previous point about hiding secret messages. It’s a consequence of parasocialising which is something I talk about later in this guide.

Actors may or may not care a lot about us as people/as a fandom, and sometimes they do like to play with us in a general lowkey sense, but they aren’t looking for a “special” group of people who Get It. They aren’t putting in the time and effort to find a way to communicate with us on some secret code level. An example within cockles fandom I’ve seen is the stoplight system (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, this was an idea proposed by a fan via text messages that Misha could use red/yellow/green to communicate how loud we could be about cockles – the day after, the official Gish account’s activity was seen as possible confirmation Misha actually adopted the method).

Which leads me to my last point:

Watch out for conspiracy thinking

I know, I know. It’s kind of in the name. Tinhatting implies some sort of conspiracy, but this is a bit too simple when it comes to RPS and especially cockles – where you have two people who make a lot of references themselves and like to have fun with it. There’s different levels of tinhatting one can do, my goal is just to try to make you more aware of some of the red flags and pitfalls that I’ve mentioned throughout this post.

Okay maybe one final point about mental health

You’re more susceptible to falling for some of these things if you’re parasocialising hard. It’s something we are all familiar with because how else did we end up in this dumpster in the first place?

It doesn’t need to be problematic – it’s almost inevitable and comes with being a fan. With tinhatting It’s important to check in with yourself from time to time how much you care about a particular theory and why you find it so important.

More generally when you find yourself spending more and more time in these fandom spaces – ask yourself if there’s something else you’re avoiding or feelings you’re repressing that need to be dealt with. Reach out to friends (those can and do include the people you spend all that time discussing RPS with), try to distance yourself a bit etc. Take a step back if needed.

With all that being said, you can still do whatever you want and make your own judgement. I just hope this can help at least one person to be more cognizant of how they engage with RPS. I know I’ve personally fallen for some of the traps and I learned and still learn along the way.

Yes, this is a little bit silly, it’s a silly subject matter. The reason I care so much and wrote this guide anyway, is not just because I like tinhatting to be believable (cause I do, I can’t deny that) but also because a lot of these critical thinking skills are helpful in for example preventing people from falling for actually dangerous conspiracy theories, cults and cult-like group structures, and toxic relationships.

Now I feel like I ended on such a serious note but I want to emphasise of course the most important part of RPS is to have fun – and this is hopefully just a tiny toolbox for when you want to do more of a deep dive.

What is the event?

The event is an Itachi/Sasuke ship inspired prompt week with a winter theme.

Do I have to sign up somewhere?

No. You can create works and post works at your will.

Is this a low stress event?

Yes. No pressure. Just posting Itachi/Sasuke content for everyone to enjoy.

How did the event start?

The members on the ItaSasu Discord server decided on the dates and put together a list of prompts. Prompts were randomly chosen and their dates. Originally, the idea of the week was to have dark content (as is Itachi and Sasuke’s penchant), but we branched out to fluffier and less dark ideas.

Content

What types of media are allowed?

Anything you want to create is allowed. Fic, art, comics, icons, edits, moonboards, manips, headcanons, physical crafts, media, video, audio, etc.

What does “winter” mean in the context on this event?

Winter can mean anything from playing in the snow to braving the blustering winter winds. It can mean something fluffy and sweet with the characters coming closer together. It can be something bleak but empty. The winter can be a ruthless, harsh time of the year, and it naturally lends itself to dark or bleak moods or surroundings. Itachi and Sasuke have a relationship which hits these seasonal changes, so you can hit whichever side of it you want to tackle.

Do I have to use the winter theme in my work?

It isn’t mandatory to use a winter theme as a central focus alongside your prompt. But in the same vein as the theme, you can make your work completely winter-themed with the listed prompts so it does take place during the winter season, or you can give your work nods to a winter theme in spirit. We are flexible on how this is done and how you want to handle your prompts.

Are OCs allowed?

Yes. Put your OCs in your work in any way you want.

Are polyamory/threesome ships allowed?

Ships that have more characters involved with the Itachi/Sasuke relationship are allowed. Even with other characters involved in the relationship, Itachi/Sasuke ship content must be featured somewhere in the relationship dynamic.

Can there be background ships?

Yes, but Itachi/Sasuke ship content must have a role in your work.

Besides Naruto, can I include works with Boruto, AUs, or crossovers?

Yes, you can include them in your works, or other fandoms.

What will not be tolerated?

Hateful, offensive, or inflammatory content aimed towards other participants or the subject of the event. As long as content doesn’t bash or insult other participants for the content of their work (e.g. ships, characters, choice of tropes) and stays relevant to the atmosphere of the week, you can create for it.

Prompts

How many prompts do I have to use a day?

At least one prompt. Picking one prompt for each set of prompts is fine for your fanwork. You can combine prompts on each line or do them separately.

Can I do more than one work per day?

Yes, of course you can!

Can I mix the types of content I want to create?

Mixing media types for separate prompts, or for the same prompt, is fine. You can write a fic for one prompt and create art for another prompt.

What does Light, Neutral, and Dark mean on the prompt list?

In order to create the prompts, we decided to add three categories.

Light, the first set of prompts, is for prompts that have the potential to be sweeter or aren’t as dark adjacent. Like fluffy snow.

Neutral, the second set of prompts, is for works that can fall in between Light and Dark and have a more tranquil feeling. Like gray winter skies.

Dark, the third set of prompts, is for darker types of content or prompts which might lead to violent or NSFW content. Like long darkness and harsh coldness.

These are not hard and fast rules. Just the founding reason we created these categories of prompts. Interpret any prompt the way you want to interpret it.

Is NSFW or trigger content allowed?

Absolutely! Do what you want with NSFW tropes, kinks, or triggering content. We do not have specific content restrictions or ratings for what you can create, so any type of ratings is fine to create.

Should I tag my work for sensitive content?

We ask you to tag your work appropriately for content like violence or sexual themes across the platform you post your works on. Warnings for triggers and NSFW count. Redirect to other sites for NSFW content that can’t be posted on Tumblr, give warnings in tweets, or put cuts on content that might need a cut, etc. The ItaSasu Discord server has NSFW channels for NSFW content.

Does my work have to be new for the event?

Ideally, your work should be a new work for the event so your work can properly focus on the prompts we have provided here. All content should stand as a full work for the event and does not need other works for the content to make sense. However, if you want to draw inspiration from another work, you can use WIPs you haven’t posted yet or separate the entry into a unique and standalone work.

What can I create for the free day option for Day 7?

You can use any trope, kink, or idea you have in mind that otherwise appeals to you. This day is helpful if you aren’t interested in the other prompts on the list.

Posting

Where can I post my work?

Anywhere you want! Tumblr, Twitter, AO3, FFN, Dreamwidth, etc. You can add your works to our ItaSasu Winter Week 2023 AO3 subcollection.

Can I submit my work to the Tumblr blog?

You can submit your work on the blog. You may send a message to us after a day if we don’t post your work and make sure we received it, but we will do our best to post your submission as soon as we can. Submissions might close after the prompt week is finished and you won’t be able to submit anymore, so you’ll have to post them without submitting them if that happens.

How can I make it easier to share my work?

Tumblr: Long posts can go behind cuts so it’s easier to share it. Put event tags in the first five tags. Submissions with NSFW content in the post may not be possible to post on the event blog since Tumblr doesn’t allow posting NSFW content, so please host that elsewhere and share a link to that content.

Twitter: Put warnings of important content in the first tweet of your thread, or at least somewhere that can be found easily if you post it in another tweet.

General: You should have content tags in place that can be seen.Include links to your works or tags. Art can have crops if you want to exclude NSFW in an image, and fics can have descriptive information like a summary or notes.

Where can I tag the event so my work will be retweeted/reblogged?

We may see your works in the tags for the event at some point, but the best way for us to see your late work is to tag us directly.

Considering that “F” is the first word of “fan,” “fandom,” and “fiction” … there are a lot of entries in the letter F. And here they all are!

Lexicon Terms Beginning with F: (read more)

Faceclaim: When someone assigns a celebrity’s face to their original character. Most often used in a roleplay setting. Those participating in a roleplaying scenario together may make rules against multiple characters having the same face. See also: fancast. Read more about faceclaims.

Fan edit: 1. A short video in which the creator patches together clips from the source fandom(s) and sets those clips to music and/or uses them to tell an abbreviated version of the original story or an entirely new story. See also: edit. 2. A photo manipulation in which a creator takes images from their fandom and modifies them. Often called a manip. Read more about types of fan edits.

Fanart: Artwork based on original media, often using the same characters and/or settings, but placing them in new contexts. Read more about fanart.

Fanartist: A person who creates fanart.

Fanboy: Someone who gets very excited about something they’re a fan of, but in a way that is seen as more “masculine.” Despite the gendered language, this term can be applied to any and all genders; several non-gendered variations (such as “fanswirl”) have been proposed, but none have caught on. See also: fangirl. Read more about the term “fanboy.”

Fancast: When a fan decides that a specific character would be best depicted by a specific real individual. This usually involves actual actors, but that isn’t necessarily a requirement. Similar to faceclaiming, but typically focused on characters from other media rather than on an individual’s original characters. For example, if someone reads a book and then decides which performers they’d like to see portray the characters in a live-action adaptation, that’s a fancast. Read more about fancasts.

Fandom : 1. A collective term for everyone who is a fan (of anything and everything – from a book through a sport’s team to an activity such as fishing and everything in between). 2. A collective term for people who are fans of a specific thing (media, character, actor, sport, etc.). 3. A term for the environment in which a person might express their enjoyment of a specific thing/things. Read more about what a fandom is.

Fanfic: Shortened term for “fanfiction.”

Fanfiction: Written works of fiction based on original media, often using the same characters and/or settings, but placing them in new contexts, extending the storylines, or otherwise transforming them per the writer’s specifications. Read more about fanfiction.

Fangirl: Someone who gets very excited about something they’re a fan of, but in a way that is seen as more “feminine.” Despite the gendered language, this term can be applied to any and all genders; several non-gendered variations (such as “fanswirl”) been proposed, but none have caught on. Fanlore: A wiki run by the OTW that compiles fandom-related information – basically a much, much larger and better documented version of this lexicon. See also: AO3, OTW. Visit Fanlore.org.

Fanmix: A fanmix is a selection of music, such as would be on a mixtape or mix CD, that a fan has compiled because of how they feel the music relates to a fandom or fandoms of their choice. Read more about fanmixes.

Fanon: An idea about a character, setting, plot, or other detail about a story that is not explicitly stated in the source material but is believed to be true. Fanon may be personal and believed by only one person or may become popular and become an established part of the fandom vernacular for a given fandom. See also: canon, head canon. Fanwork: The collective term for all creations that fans make as part of their participation in fandom, such as fanfiction, fanart, edits, manips, filk, meta, and more. Read more about fanworks.

Fanzine: See zine.

Feelings Yakuza: See Okimochi Yakuza.

Feels: As in “right in the feels.” Used to describe when something makes a person emotional despite themselves. Read more about the term “feels.”

Femslash: Lesbian and wlw fanworks, shipping female characters together. See also: slash. Read more about femslash.

Fest: A fandom event centered on a specific theme, often characterized by many prompts or other interaction opportunities scheduled over a period of time that result in the creation and sharing of numerous informal/smaller creations. Read more about fests.

FF.net: Abbreviation for fanfiction.net. A website that hosts fanfiction. Visit FF.net.

Fic: Short for fiction or fanfiction.

Fic Rec: Shortened term for “fanfiction recommendation.” A fanfic that someone has recommended because it’s one of their personal favorites and/or on some criteria (for example, “fanfics set at a beach.”) Fic recs are often compiled into rec lists. Read more about recs.

Ficlet: A short fanfiction. Ficlets are usually under 1,000 words. See also: drabble, flash fic. Read more about ficlets.

Filk: Essentially fanfic in music form, though the medium may make the connection less obvious. For example, Come With Me by chxrlotte is about Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omens. Read more about filk.

Fix-it: A fanwork that fixes a perceived or actual problem in the source material. For example, a fix-it might offer an explanation for an actual plot hole, or it may be created to segue between canon and popular fanon, or it might be used to change an unhappy event in canon (such as a character dying) into a tale with a happier ending. Flame: To be intentionally offensive toward someone on the internet. Often used as a verb. Read more about flames and flaming.

Flamewar: When two or more people engage in reciprocal flaming, exchanging increasingly offensive and/or violent posts with each other, the resulting back-and-forth is called a flamewar. This term has largely fallen out of fashion; “discourse” and “wank” are used more often now. Read more about flamewars.

Flash Fic: Shortened term for “flash fiction.” Very short fiction stories, typically not more than a couple hundred words. Read more about flash fiction.

Fluff: Refers to fics or scenes that are soft, soothing, calm, domestic, and/or loving – the in-betweens and soft points we rarely see on the published page or the TV screen because they are the opposite of conflict. Read more about fluff.

Follow Forever: Someone an individual will never stop following on social media, even if their interests diverge. In the past, “follow forever” posts were popular on Tumblr, where an OP would make a list of other users they would never unfollow. Follow forevers have fallen out of style.

Forum: 1. A message board, usually privately owned/not connected to social media. 2. A specific type of Discord channel that bears some resemblance to how Reddit works. 3. The message board section of a large webpage that may have other functionality as well, such as the forums on Ravelry. Read more about forums.

FTM: Abbreviation for “female to male.” A way of referring to a transgender man. Some people find this term offensive, and others do not. Some transgender people use it to discuss their own gender and their transition, and others do not. Read more about the abbreviation “ftm.”

Fudanshi: A Japanese term for a man who is a fan of BL and yaoi (mlm) content. See also: fujoshi. Read more about fudanshi.

Fujo: Shortened term of “fujoshi.”

Fujoshi: A Japanese term for a woman who is a fan of BL and yaoi (mlm) content. See also: fudanshi. Read more about fujoshi.

Fursona: Refers to the name, characteristics, and physical attributes that a furry has chosen for their animal persona. See also [thing]sona. Read more about fursonas.

Fusion: Specifically in a fandom sense, fusion is used to refer to when a fanfiction or fanart combines two or more different fandoms into one shared universe. The most famous example is Superwholock, the fusion ‘verse of Supernatural, Doctor Who, and BBC Sherlock. Read more about fusion fanfiction.

Futanari : A Japanese word that is often used in fandom to describe characters with sex characteristics from both genders. This and the shortened term “futa” are, in the West, most often used to describe a genre of pornographic anime and manga. Read more about the term “futanari.”

It can be any version of Cyclops and Wolverine from any universe as our only rule on the content created is that Scott and Logan have to be the main characters and the main pairing if there is a ship related story/art/etc. Poly ships ARE ALLOWED but just so long as they feature Scott and Logan as the primary characters/pairing within the story context.

Creations do NOT have to contain romantic ships and can be purely platonic if you want for them, but we ask that everyone remember this is a bingo to show our love for Scott and Logan together whether as partners, friends or lovers as this bingo is ship oriented, so please keep that in mind with our fills! You are not limited on what you feel inspired by. Your creativity is where we want you to focus, so please don’t feel pushed into a corner to create something you aren’t comfortable with. Minimum Fill Requirements

Fanfic needs to be a minimum 500 words, unless you are doing a drabble, which has to be 100 words exactly. (For poetry works we will leave it to your discretion, but be mindful to be creative in doing so!)

For fanart use your discretion if it’s physical art, or at least 540 pixels wide for digital art (graphics, edits) if you are posting it on tumblr. Anything smaller might be hard to view, but if there are questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

For Gifsets again we’ll leave it up to your discretion. If you make a manip gif where there is only one, we’ll allow it because we know that’s a lot of hard work. If you want to make a set of 10 gifs then we’re all for it as well. It’s up to you :slight_smile:

Mood boards again we’ll leave at your discretion as well. We want you to be able to explore.

Fanvids should be at least 15 seconds long because we know how much time and effort goes into them. If you run shy of the 15 seconds that’s alright because we understand time constraints as well.

Playlists should at least a minimum of 10 songs and a clear theme when you submit.

Image Prompts

We thought we’d give it a try in doing image prompts after we’ve seen other bingos doing it and it seemed like a lot of fun. On your card you will find an image in a square. What you choose to create is based on your response to the image. For example if you have a picture of a beach, you can do your creative piece around a beach them if you’d like or something associated with it that inspires you. It’s our way to try to get you to have fun and embrace your creativity in the prompts! If you would prefer not to have an image square then feel free to let us know when you sign up.

Combining Squares

If you look at your card and see that a few prompts will fit for an idea that might work as a multi-chapter story, then you are more than welcome to use them in the fic. The only request we make is that you try to adhere to the 500 word minimum for each chapter you use a prompt in. So if you have a story that uses 4 of your prompts in it, you must have at least 4 chapters of the story. If there are any further questions please feel free to ask.

How to Post

When it comes time to post, you can post a variety of ways. We would suggest posting on AO3 or on Tumblr as those are the two methods the mods use the most and will be sure to see it. The best options are probably Tumblr and AO3. If you post to Tumblr, please tag it with #scoganbingo so we can find them, and since Tumblr can be a butt sometimes, please tag us as well, @scoganbingo. If you post to AO3, we have a Scogan Bingo Collection on there as well. To make the process easier you will also be required to fill out the submission form for each fill that you make.

As per usual, you will be required to fill out this submission form for every fill you make. If you don’t fill out the form, your fills will not be logged in our spreadsheet, and you will not receive your badges.

Late Signups

You are still able to sign up for Round One Bingo at any time between the start and the end deadline. Because we’re more open in the hopes of encouraging creativity, we will try to keep deadlines open. We will have an official end of the round where people can send in their master lists, but for those who take a while to get things done, please feel free to carry your card over to the next round or if you only want to do this round, then we still encourage you to send in your fills as you do them. Creativity can take time and we don’t want you to feel rushed if you run out of time!

Thinking a lot about The Cliff Scene* in The Wrath of the Lamb, because there are multiple possible interpretations of Will’s motivations there, but my personal reading is that he does not have a God Damn Clue what he is going to do about Hannibal until he does it.

What I come back to, when I think about this scene, is Will's actions in the season 2 finale, where he calls Hannibal on the phone to tip him off. We don’t get the full context for these actions until Aperitivo, where he tells Jack, “I wasn’t decided when I called him, I just called him… I deliberated as the phone rang… I decided when I heard his voice.” Mizumono deliberately instills ambiguity as to his intentions and loyalties - explicitly so with the parallel conversations with Jack and Hannibal at the beginning of that episode! - but this later conversation with Jack clarifies that he did genuinely intend to go through with the plan he and Jack had laid out to catch Hannibal, but made a spur-of-the-moment to disrupt it - hoping Hannibal would just run - because in that brief moment, he couldn’t bring himself to betray him.

And then all through the beginning of season 3, he is - to paraphrase his words to Hannibal in Yakimono - “dealing with his feelings about Hannibal,” feelings that he doesn’t seem fully decided on how he wants to act on. Despite agreeing with Chiyoh’s summation that he feels killing Hannibal is the only way to avoid becoming like him, this motivation doesn’t seem to loom large for him at all in his search for Hannibal. Rather, from his exchange with Jack before he leaves for Italy, the way he haunts Hannibal’s abandoned house, and his words to Chiyoh about how he’s never known himself as well as when he’s been with Hannibal, the strongest impression his trek through Europe leaves is that he misses Hannibal, that at least part of him regrets not running away with him, and that he’s profoundly conflicted about his feelings and thinks being reunited with Hannibal will provide clarity. And then, we get the scene in Dolce, just after they’re reunited, where you can just see him deliberating before he pulls out a knife and tries to kill Hannibal. It’s almost like the reverse of the situation leading up to the season 2 finale, where he goes in intending to take down Hannibal but, after internally wavering, comes down on the side of helping him - here, he seeks to understand Hannibal while struggling with his own feelings, and then, in the decisive moment, comes down on the side of trying to kill him.

So then in The Wrath of the Lamb… he’s cagey what exactly his intentions are. When he says to Bedelia “I don’t intend Hannibal to be caught a second time,” it’s ambiguous whether he plans to kill him or free him. Bedelia seems to assume the latter (“can’t live with him, can’t live without him”), but Will doesn’t clarify. He only says “this is my becoming,” which could refer to either, and in his mind, I think they’re united - either killing Hannibal or letting him go would fundamentally change Will, turn him into the person’s he’s tried to resist becoming.

So when he tells Hannibal that he intends to watch Dolarhyde “change” him, he means it in the moment, just as he’s had powerful but momentary convictions regarding him before. But I’d say what’s looming largest for Will in this episode, bigger than any one aim, is the feeling of having power over Hannibal. Earlier in the episode, of course, he reveals that he intentionally manipulated Hannibal into giving himself up. When Hannibal asks if it was good to see him, and Will says “Good? No,” he means that Hannibal has once again forced him to contend with his darker impulses, with the part of himself that is drawn to violence and having power over others (see: Chilton). And the timing of that reveal to Hannibal is relevant to contextualizing Will’s later actions, because once he’s putting the plan to catch Dolarhyde into play…. he likes that he holds sway over what happens to Hannibal. He knew how to manipulate Hannibal, three years ago, he wanted to use his last encounter with him to rub that in, and I believe his plan to fake Hannibal’s escape sees him embracing the fact that his ability to manipulate Hannibal brings him pleasure, rather than just being something he deploys for strictly utilitarian purposes - what his claims about not having Hannibal’s appetite in “Digestivo” seem to suggest.

And then, when he’s handed the opportunity on a platter to let Dolarhyde kill Hannibal, when the situation seems to be playing out exactly as he planned it… he can’t do it. Everything he does in Wrath of the Lamb is a “deliberating as the phone rang” moment for him. That moment of eye contact he shares with Hannibal just before he reaches for his gun lets him decide, just as he decided when he heard Hannibal’s voice on the phone.

So, the cliff…. to answer the question of whether he intended to kill himself and Hannibal or escape together, I’d say, honestly, either one. Will knows it may well kill them, and he’s certainly all right with that outcome, but I wouldn’t say that specifically is his primary motivation. Crucially, contrary to popular opinion, I don’t read Will’s actions here as an altruistic sacrifice to rid the world of the evil they might both perpetuate. He’s well aware that he’s crossed a line he can’t come back from, at least by his own standards, but I think this act is a bit more selfish than noble self-sacrifice. Like many other decisions he makes regarding Hannibal, it’s a spur-of-the-moment decision, primarily driven by emotion. And the emotional drive behind it is, first and foremost, possessiveness. As he embraces Hannibal here, figuratively and literally, he’s realized that he can’t bear to see anyone else kill Hannibal - and after what they’ve just shared, he can’t let him go either. The way he wraps his arm around Hannibal’s neck in those last moments, to me, is similar to him pressing his hand up against the glass earlier in the episode, when he tells Hannibal he maneuvered Hannibal into giving himself up, and that in some way, he will always hold that over him - that they will always belong to each other. He just needs to claim Hannibal for himself, and go with him, whether or not they survive. It might best be summed up by this exchange with Bedelia from this episode:

Bedelia: We assign a moment to decision. What you propose is so thoughtless I find it difficult to imagine that moment exists. Will: Decisions are made of needed feelings. They’re more often a lump than a sum.

This is a difficult scene to analyze given the truncation of the story, because the show frequently elaborates more on the circumstances, outcomes, and character motivations surrounding events later on (see: Will’s actions in the s2 finale, Chilton getting shot, Abigail’s “death” in the s1 finale, etc.). I suspect Fuller&co. would have fleshed out this scene much more with a planned fourth season. But just working from what we have now, and trying to make sense of a rather… cryptic season 3, I think this is where I land with what makes the most narrative sense to me and is the most aesthetically satisfying.

(*This is all assuming that the cliff fall literally happens, which is in itself questionable to me - there are moments where I’m happy taking it as a Vertigo-style ending that’s more symbolic than anything else, something not literally happening in the story’s causal reality any more than Dolarhyde’s blood literally spills out in the shape of wings. But - especially since people on this show are capable of surviving injuries to a rather absurd degree - I’m not married to that interpretation, and I think the character insight this moment produces is compelling to examine.)

Debunking that Louis came out to the Rovers in August 2013 - posted January 11, 2023

I don't necessarily want to rehash old stuff, but I've seen a few people talking about this recently and it came up in one of my group chats this morning. I like context and I like to debunk things that aren't true about the boys.

This morning in one of my group chats someone brought up an OLD OLD OLD question. The story goes that in 2013, when Louis was signing on to the Doncaster Rovers as part of the reserve team for a charity gig, some of his football teammates congratulated him for being one of the UK’s first openly gay footballers. There are tweets that purportedly support this story.

It didn’t make sense to me that in 2013, Louis was coming out publicly to anyone in a group setting, and I had a bit of time, so decided to go down the rabbit hole a bit to find out more.

If you weren’t aware, a bit later in 2014, Louis tried to buy into the team. One Direction's Louis Tomlinson buys Doncaster Rovers | Doncaster Rovers | The Guardian

Disclaimer. I wasn’t here then. So, someone knows more than me for sure. Let me know if you remember something different or if you were here and can clarify, or if you know of anyone who has a master post about it.

Adding a cut.

Here's what started my research. This is a screen shot from someone claiming that Louis came out to his Rovers Teammates and that some of them congratulated him, mentioning that he was the first openly gay UK footballer, and then immediately deleted their tweets.

This screen shot is blurry but it’s what we started with. The poster states that Louis came out to his teammates through a loophole.

Through some searching, I was able to find someone with a better screen shot. Credit to Twitter user @/babyhykeem. You can see better here that these tweets existed. In August 2013, people were repeating the idea that Louis was the first openly gay UK footballer.

My original theory that they were faked or manips seems false. The tweets happened. Some of those users are still there and if you put "Louis Tomlinson first gay footballer" into the Twitter search bar you'll get a bunch of hits/reactions from August 3, 2013, so it happened.

Here's the thing. Just because something happened doesn't make all of it true. It doesn't make any sense that in 2013, at the height of 1D popularity, that Louis would in any way publicly announce his sexuality. Gay rumors were rampant, but no one was confirming anything.

One of my chat members (thanks, @/DawnieP12 on Twitter) looked at the team roster from 2013-2014. Louis was listed as #28, but none of those other names in that screen shot are listed. So these people were not teammates.

A bit more searching, and I found these screenshots of Tweets from a person called @/Ryan67_ (thanks to Twitter user @/monnbenn for the screenshots).

This looks like ground zero to me. On 8/1/13, this kid posts the "inadvertently came out" post that got picked up by all the other accounts. He was a player on one of the youth leagues and someone told him that L had come out. It was a rumor/gossip and the kid posted it. Maybe innocently. Maybe he made it up. We don't know. Maybe he believed something he was told. It's important to note that he never claimed to witness it himself.

There are allusions to these tweets on Tumblr and Twitter from the time as well as in football chat groups (some of them are super homophobic). But nothing that I can find from actual players to whom he supposedly came out.

My final analysis: The Tweets about Louis coming out to the team and being the first openly gay footballer WERE real, but they were not made by teammates, coworkers or colleagues, only propagated by people (possibly shading, you decide based on their tone) sharing a rumor/gossip started by a kid who was playing on the youth team and was given false information.

Some of the reactions seem well intentioned and honestly congratulatory, while some seem homophobic and mean spirited. Regardless, they all are feeding off something that was very likely false to begin with.

I'm not making any statements about how Louis identifies his sexuality either now or in 2013, just that I don't believe he came out to the team, or that any of the team made statements about his sexuality publicly.
