@bhaalswn said : Where can your Tav be recruited? Are they first encountered on the Nautiloid, or in the Nautiloid crash region? Or are they not recruitable until a later act?
ulysses can be recruited at the tail end of act II, beneath moonrise towers! they're one of the pod captives alongside mizora, and can be released at the player's discretion. doing so will initiate a fight, and depending on whether you either KILL or INCAPACITATE ulysses affects whether they will be recruitable after defeating thorm. if you've released kevlor ( and defeated the mindflayers ) kevlor will ensure that the newly-conscious ulysses makes it to the ground floor of moonrise towers. speaking to them invites the option for you to invite them to your camp, where you'll find your newly-recuitable bard leading into act III.
@bhaalswn said : What can they be found doing at the tiefling/goblin party?
this directly conflicts with them being recruitable at the end of act II but i'm gonna answer is anyways!!!! because the main reason i made them an act II recruit is because i couldn't think of a genuinely organic way to introduce them into the story during act I lol
the answer is- nowhere.
i've seen a few posts on when the alfira event triggers ( like, not even having to enter the grove, never interact with her, etc etc )
and i think it would be SO tragic if when you encounter alfira she is with ulysses, and they're both going at it over this song she's trying to write but they have clashing creative energy, but when you kinda delve into their dialogue a little bit you find that she was the one that pulled ulysses off the beach and got them help, and they've been enjoying each other's company since.
. . . and then the goblin party rolls around. you can't find ulysses OR alfira. like, at all. you can implore with companion's and party-goer's alike about their absence and they'll talk nonsense about being very close, eluding to this and that, general nonsense about people assuming they've entered a relationship and they got away from it all to be alone.
the next day, post-party, you can re-enter the grove and find ulysses by themselves, sans-alfira, by the waterfront ( the one where you initially find the bear!!! ) sitting on a rock, head in their hands. approaching and speaking with them, you can ask about alfira ( and initiate an insight check ) and they will say they have no idea where she is ( succeeded in the insight check will reveal that they are lying ) you can either intimidate or persuade them into telling the truth ( or, idk, just leave LOL ) and get them to tell you the irrefutable truth :
ulysses and alfira separated from the party because they were writing a ballad. about you. to surprise you with, of course. but then it had gotten quite late, and ulysses had dozed off. they woke up covered in her blood, and had spend the latter half of the morning hiding her body and trying to cope with the guilt. another insight check, or using detect thoughts, reveals that the tale they spin about blacking out, not knowing what the hell had happened, is at the very least TRUE.
maybe your pc, idk, offers to help figure out what is causing their black outs and that's when you recruit them into your camp :))

I think it's insane that after the final Agni Kai, Zuko was able to tank a hyper-powered lightning bolt (I mean, tank in the way he was still moving after getting hit, even if it was just groans of pain and slight twitching). He just got healed by Katara for about 5 seconds and was A-OK afterward.
When Aang got struck by lightning, he was in a coma for like what? Almost a month? And you're telling me Zuko gets struck by lightning, and 5 minutes later, is walking around like it never happened? Sorry, I can't believe that.
But Sno, you say, Aang was in his most fragile state. Of course, he was in a month long coma after he basically died. Okay, and I think that Zuko being hit by a lightning bolt 100x more powerful than the one Aang got hit by would also put Zuko in a coma; especially because Katara doesn't have the spirit water to bring him back to life. Unlike Aang, Zuko only gets regular water, not magic water, to heal him.
"But, but Zuko redirected it," you say. Uh no, Zuko wasn't grounded, so that shit still hit him like a damn truck. He redirected some of it, but not all of it. I would probably say that it burnt him from the inside out. It's a miracle that in LOK, that man is still kicking it and being a badass in his early 90s. He should have serious heart issues, if not have died in his 70s at the absolute latest. The man should not be kicking ass in the poles. He should be on bed rest.
In conclusion, Zuko should have been in a coma for like at least a year (realistically he should be dead, but this is a kids show where the main characters aren't allowed to die, so I'll let it slide) and I will stand by that.
If you wanna read how the creators could have worked with comatose Zuko, read under the cut. If not, then I hope you enjoyed my little rant. This post got longer than I thought.
Here's how the creators could have dealt with comatose Zuko and the potential storylines our other favorites could have had at the end of book 3 and a majority of the potential and nonexistent book 4:
Aang is having to deal with the consequences of Ozai being left alive, as I'm sure the Earth Kingdom and the Water Tribes would not like that fact. As well as their newest Fire Lord currently being in a comatose state. They barely trusted Zuko. Are you telling me they're gonna trust The Dragon of the West? (More on this at the end) And maybe Aang would actually get some character development, unlike in season 3.
I don't think Sokka, Suki, and Toph would have storylines that center Zuko all that much, but they would also definitely be mourning the semi-loss of Zuko along with whatever storyline they get. Maybe Sokka and Suki can have conflict in their relationship now that the war is over and they might physically have to go their own ways. Toph can probably wonder where she can go from here. Will she try and reconcile with her parents again? Will she travel with Aang once Zuko wakes up? Will she stay in the Fire Nation and help Zuko sniff out traitors with her seismic sense? Needless to say, the 3 of them have endless opportunities.
Katara is now dealing with the guilt of not only having put Zuko in that position in the first place, but also not being able to fully heal him (even though he would have done that for anyone, not just her). And if you're a Zutara shipper, like myself, even realizing potential feelings and the conflict that comes with that. Or if we still wanna go through with the canon ending of Kataang, have her navigate her feelings about Aang properly and not whatever that original canon ending was. And if we wanna go the "Katara doesn't need a man" route (my personal favorite despite my shipping tendencies), she could try and navigate where she goes from here, like Toph. Obviously, she'll go back to the Southern Water Tribe and help out there, but what comes after they've recovered? She's not the type to stand by and settle when there are other people who need her help. Will she go to the Earth Kingdom and help rebuild there? Go to the Fire Nation and help out there? Become an ambassador of the Southern Water Tribe to help better relations with the other nations? (My personal favorite) The possibilities are endless for her.
But you know who would be affected the most? Iroh. Not only did he (kinda) lose his nephew, who was his second son, but he now has to deal with the diplomatic repercussions of his past as a general of the Fire Nation. Like I said before, the Earth Kingdom and the Water Tribes barely trusted Zuko; no way in hell are they gonna trust the man that laid seige to Ba Sing Se for nearly 2 whole years, regardless if he's the reason the city was freed from Fire Nation control. The pressure Iroh would feel from advisors regarding the fact that his only heir is comatose would increasingly get worse as the months go by. We know that Zuko will wake up, but Iroh and the rest of the cast don't. Iroh is dealing with the fracturing Fire Nation and pressure from the Earth Kingdom and the Water Tribes, all while his son is in a coma. He could see what he was going to have Zuko face by himself with no support around him. What would he do with Ozai? Would be a major question throughout the season.
Of course, in the end, Zuko wakes up because we want a happy ending for them all. But the turmoil we could have gotten in the end would have been *chefs kiss*

Febuwhump Day 21 - Unresponsive
TWs in tags || read on Ao3 || wc: 1332
◈━◈━◈━◈━◈
Time-activated quirks are rare. Izuku knows, he’s studied many. He was fascinated by the logistics the first time he read about one in the news. The quirk usually being transferred by some physical touch or substance from the user- slowly dissolving into the victim like a pill.
Pro hero Buzzkill has a quirk that gives its victim a bee sting-like welt every four and a half minutes. The vigilante Combo Breaker has a quirk that breaks one of its victim's fingers every two minutes.
And apparently, the villain he’d been fighting on patrol also shared this unique quirk factor.
The debrief had said the guy was quirkless, but one look at the shoes on his feet told Izuku otherwise.
Now, four hours and twenty-five minutes later, he’s lying on the floor of his kitchen unable to move.
His nose is pressed at an uncomfortable angle, mere inches from where his coffee mug was smashed to pieces when he dropped it.
He’d felt this odd pain in the base of his spine when he got off of patrol, and after his post-shift nap, it had only been higher up on his back and twice as intense.
Apparently, when it got to his head, he was due to lose all motor functions. Great!
The good news is that Katsuki should be home any minute, and he can pull Izuku out of this cold, black coffee puddle. Maybe he’ll even put him back in bed if he’s feeling generous.
He’s not sure how long he waits. His eyelids have drooped close, though he couldn’t open them if he wanted. He spends a while trying to determine if he’s breathing or not, but his whole body is so uncomfortably numb that he gives up.
Soon enough, the door opens and Katsuki’s gym shoes are kicked off into their cubby.
“‘M home.” He grumbles, probably not expecting an answer because Izuku is usually still napping when Katsuki gets back from his morning gym run.
Izuku isn’t sure what Katsuki notices first, maybe his socked feet lying on the ground, or the bits of red, blue, and yellow ceramic that probably skidded across the room.
“Deku? Did you fuckin’ fall?” His husband scoffs, rounding the corner to see Izuku sprawled on the floor, “Oi, get up dumbass.”
Izuku mentally winces, not prepared for the absolute earful Katsuki is going to give him later.
Katsuki walks closer, nudging the broken pieces of mug away, “Izuku?”
Ah, he’s anxious.
Izuku might’ve predicted this issue if he had thought a little harder. He’s not in any real danger, so there’s no need to worry-
“Izuku?!”
But he doesn’t know that.
“No come on,” Katsuki mumbles out loud, trying to reason logically like Izuku knows he does when he’s scared, “he hit his head and passed out- no, there’s no blood. He was tired? Maybe he wanted to sleep on the floor…”
Katsuki comes up behind him and drops to his knees, rolling Izuku over.
Light flashes in front of his eyes, but he’s powerless to blink at the sudden flash. Katsuki curses when his head flops back and smacks the tile. Stars fly across the black of his eyelids.
“Izuku, wake up.” Katsuki presses his fingers under Izuku’s jaw and curses.
There’s no way this quirk stopped his heartbeat- right?!
Katsuki pries one of his eyelids open. The cool air burns but he doesn’t flinch.
His pupil must not react either, because before he knows it Katsuki is tugging him into his arms with a frantic whimper and launching himself across their living room.
Katsuki places a leg in between Izuku’s own and wraps one of his arms under Izuku’s shoulders so he can use the other to propel them into the sky.
The wind whistles by Izuku’s ears as Katsuki wastes no time getting them to what he can only assume is the hospital a few blocks away.
The strain his arm must feel right now can only be extremely painful but Katsuki makes no sign of it.
Izuku can feel them descending, just as Katsuki’s grip on him begins to slip. Katsuki stumbles a bit on the ground, lurching forward but being sure to keep Izuku’s body in his solid grip.
“HEY!” He shouts as soon as they step through the sliding doors of the emergency bay, “I NEED A DOCTOR NOW!”
“Sir please don’t-”
“Pro hero Dynamight!” Another nurse interrupts the first, rushing towards them, “What are his vitals?”
Izuku feels himself get flipped onto a gurney, lying face up on the cold, thin fabric. He can feel everything down to his hair follicles itching to form goosebumps.
He hears the nurse gasp as soon as his hair falls out of his face.
I might be wearing pajamas, but I’m still the number one hero, he figures. I’d recognize All Might in his pajamas.
“Is that-”
“Someone who needs a fucking doctor?!” Katsuki growls, “YES.”
The nurse barks a few orders at her coworkers and, from what Izuku can tell, sprints with him down the hallway.
“Vitals?”
“No.”
The cart shudders when she briefly trips, “N-No? What do you mean-”
“I mean he wasn’t fucking responsive. I came home and he was on the fucking floor. No pulse, no breathing, no pupil dilation.” Katsuki’s voice moves to his other side, and there’s more movement before Izuku is lifted over to a different bed.
The nurse hooks a machine up to him to start pumping his chest while she darts around him, checking various other vitals.
“Shit.” She whispers to herself, pressing her warm hands into his wrist harder.
Someone slams open the door, running to Izuku’s side. His hearing blurs while they yell orders at each other, pricking Izuku with various needles.
“C’mon.” A new, higher-pitched male voice grunts in his ear as what he can assume is a shot of adrenaline is pumped into his fresh IV.
“You said you found him like this?” Another female voice asks, farther in the corner of the room where he figures Katsuki is watching.
“He passed out, there’s no obvious trauma. I have no fucking idea why.” Katsuki grunts, voice warbling. “He was on patrol a few hours ago but there was nothing in the report that would warrant this.”
“It’s not looking…” She pauses, “It’s not ideal, but we can’t rule out the possibility of it being a quirk.”
“Nothing is rousing him. We can keep the compressions going, but his body isn’t showing postmortem symptoms. I think, truly, if he comes back it will be regardless of what we do.”
Katsuki sighs, “I’m going to call his mom. Take the machine off him, she shouldn’t see him like this.”
Izuku’s head jostles as they remove the machine, his chest already feeling the ache and forming bruises.
The nurse clamps a heart rate monitor onto his finger and leaves his side, rolling whatever monstrosity of a contraption they had waiting for him on a cart out of the room.
It’s completely silent for a few minutes, not even the usual steady beep of his heart that he associates with the hospital to keep him company.
The door swings open and footsteps move towards his side.
He knows it’s Katsuki as soon as their hands touch.
His husband’s warm hands cup his own, rubbing circles into his skin.
“If you die on a random ass fucking Thursday morning when you’re not even working I’ll make sure they send you to whatever hell exists for idiots like you.”
Izuku laughs inwardly, enjoying Katsuki’s touch.
“Shitty prank. You broke your favorite mug.”
Ah damn, he forgot about that.
Katsuki’s hair tickles his forearm as the man presumably leans down, pressing his lips to Izuku’s inner wrist, “If you leave me I’ll never forgive you.” He stretches a hand over Izuku’s stomach, resting it on his soft sleep shirt. “I love you, I don’t tell you nearly enough.”
“Come back to me, Izuku.”
And Izuku wishes more than anything that he knew how.

The sky is illuminated as he falls, and Eddie can clearly see the outline of the engine as he's thrown backward through the air. The crack of his helmet hitting the ground echoes through his skull and reverberates down the length of his spine. The nerves in the ends of his fingers tingle with the impact and the wind is knocked out of his lungs.
He heaves a breath and groans as he tries to roll onto his side. His head is spinning and he feels a little bit nauseous. Bobby is next to him in an instant with a hand on his shoulder and around his back, carefully leveraging Eddie to sit up straight and then pulling him to his feet.
“Are you okay?” Bobby shouts over the thunder and the rain. Water pours over the shoulders of his turnout and Eddie can feel it sliding beneath the collar of his own coat. “Eddie? Are you hurt?”
In his daze, Eddie struggles to meet Bobby’s eyes, looking around and taking in flashes of the parking lot as lightning continues to create a strobing effect. The engine is to his right. The platform at the base of the ladder is singed and blackened not a foot from where he was standing as the arm bounces and swings precariously.
Eddie swings his head around again, wrenching himself out of Bobby’s grasp.
“Buck? Buck!” He can’t see him. Through the rain and the wind, his eyes track the length of the aerial but Buck is nowhere to be seen. “No, no no. Buck!”
Eddie takes one stumbling step after another, every bone in his body aches and screams in tandem with the shouts climbing up his throat in desperate chorus. “Buck!”
Absently Eddie knows that Bobby is following him as he rounds the engine, still scanning the arm of the ladder and the ground beneath it.
There.
Eddie scrambles across the tarmac, his chest heaving and his heart aching as he races toward the heap of limbs and kevlar. The reflective strips on Buck’s turnout catch in the next flash of lightning and the BUCKLEY printed across his back is illuminated like a beacon. He’s laying on his front with one side of his face pressed into the tarmac, his arms, and legs folded beneath him on uncomfortable angles.
“Buck! Buck! Can you hear me?” Eddie gets to his side and sinks to his knees, choking on a sob. Buck’s eyes are open but vacant, his helmet is resting on the ground a mere five feet from his body, slowly rocking back and forth on its rounded edge.
“Buck. Please.” He gasps and his hands shake as he reaches out for his best friend. Eddie’s hands never shake. He doesn’t panic, he does not panic. “Buck!”
Bobby’s hands land on Eddie’s shoulders and when that isn’t enough he grips under his armpits and bodily drags Eddie backward as Hen and Chimney materialize on either side of Buck’s prone body. “Eddie, Eddie. Come on.”
“No! No, please. Buck!” He’s hysterical, he knows he’s being ridiculous. Screeching and crying are doing nothing to help Buck but something horrible has taken him over at the site.
Bobby trips over his own feet under Eddie's dead weight and they both fall to the ground. Bobby’s arms wrap around Eddie’s shoulders like a vice and he sinks into him with a heavy, shaking sigh, exhaling out his nose as his own tears mix with the rain streaming down his cheeks.
He whispers as if there is anyone who can hear him over the wind and the rain. Anyone. “Please.”
