hello again! secret santa here lol <3 i’m having such a hard time remembering not to follow you and like your posts bc !! they’re good posts!!
and that makes complete sense to me, thank you for the clarification!
(i actually have written domesticity for royai a bit but with the huge exception that they’re a queerplatonic couple To Me, so i totally understand feeling like. a little Different from the way fandom interacts with them! cuz they’re just like. not romantic to me at all & so domesticity means something different when it’s committed platonic ykno?)
all that being said, i have a couple of ideas for a few different dynamics (including some of your other originally requested ones) that i’m kicking around atm && i can def work with subtle and/or shenanigans for sure, i’m actually looking forward to that!
(i’m also in the middle of finals so i likely won’t get to start for another week or two, just wanted to give my daydreams a little direction!)
hello againnn <33 ty for your nice words!
slay.. in all honesty i loove bodyguard dynamics and fma gives me not only ONE but TWO of those (royai and ling/lan fan) and umm i love how these ships are about knowing the other person from the inside and out and being able to communicate from the other side of a crowded room but never actually touching.. fandom loves Not That, i see a lot of fluff and touchy cuddly content and children/settled down aus and im like.. they Would Not Fucking Do That. however, your take sounds super interesting and fun to explore! but you get it
good luck with your exams!

Dearest Fox Void, I am glad you have returned.
I need to tell you about my transfem!Ed Elric idea.
Mostly, it's that Ed has never thought about her gender, but as soon as anyone brings up she may be a girl her response is to think about it for a bit, then go "Oh! No wait that makes sense." And proceed to go all in about it.
Specifically, I'm thinking about Ed being on the run with Greed and the others and needing a disguise. What better disguise when the country is on the lookout for a short loud blond boy alchemist than a fairly normal height blond girl? Ed transmutes his coat into a dress, keeps his hair down, adds a bit more heel to his boots and speaks quietly or not at all and Boom! that's just a shy girl.
After a little bit of doing this, with Ed seemingly not having any issues with the act, Greed tries to poke at Ed a little bit.
Greed: So, you seem to be playing a girl so well, what if you actually are one? (Expecting Ed to blow up about being a man and not into girly things, etc.)
Ed: [shrugs] It's not like it's a big deal, cross-dressing is fun, everyone enjoys it a little bit.
The Chimeras: ... no, no they don't.
Ed: ... What?
Darius: Honestly, kid, i'm not sure how you do it all the time. I think if I tried it I would feel uncomfortable even if I *could* pull it off.
Heinkel: Yeah, and you seem to... enjoy being seen as a girl more than as a boy.
Ed: ...
Greed is now expecting panic and loud, fervent denials, but Ed remains quiet. It's, like, half an hour before he comes back and is like, "no, yeah, turns out I'm actually a girl. Huh."
Greed: What??? Just like that??? No angst or anything???
Ed: [shrugs] it's not like it's anything bad. I just never thought about it.
Heinkel: [deciding that he's gonna roll with it to screw with Greed] so, are you gonna change your name? Edward is pretty masculine.
Ed: [oblivious to Heinkel's game and Greedlings internal screaming] Well, I want to keep being Ed, but I never really liked Edward much anyway. Maybe Eden?
Darius: [picked up on Heinkel's wavelength] sounds good to me.
So, yeah, now Ed is going by Eden and she/her pronouns. Every time Ed meets up with someone who really knows her (Al. Winry, Pinako, Izumi and Sig) and tells them, the general reaction is "no, yeah, that tracks" and Greedling is so *so* frustrated at the nonchalance. (Hohenheim is surprised, but his general demeanor makes him incapable of expressing it to the degree Greed wants.)
After the final battle, Ling leaves Ed with a cute outfit (think that one emo anime-girl pic that was everywhere. Or any hot-topic teenage girl. The red plaid miniskirt with the chains is required) and Ed loves it, and hates that she loves it, and is mildly weirded out by the fact that it is tailored to her. But, the important thing is that she wears it to Team Mustangs room to quit the military, which is how she comes out to all of them.
See I read this and all I can think is "where's the fic, anon?" because yes please and thank you????

Royai WIPs
I'm sharing for motivation/accountability to get one of these done!
In denial Roy fic is 19k already. I probably could get it done with less than 10k now, and I love the slow burn it has going. Nothing too original there, just my take on some canon things...with smut.
Zombie AU where Mustang and his team have banded together to survive, and Al and Ed are two kids that need help. Royai knew each other pre-zombie apocalypse.
Modern bodyguard AU where Roy is an important senator whose receiving serious death threats, and Riza is a part of his security detail.
A post-canon crack Royai fic where married Ed and Winry get drunk and Winry convinces Ed to role play with her as Royai and...Roy and Riza (not in a relationship) end up overhearing. It has Ed tricking Al into helping him steal their uniforms and is all around total garbage, haha!
A crack fic where Riza and Roy get drunk and keep trying to hook up with each other, so their friends are babysitting them to keep them from breaking the fraternizing laws.

Fullmetal Alchemist Chapter 70
If I had to assume any one major thing in FMA was not originally planned from the start, it would be Kimblee's bodyguards. My primary bit of evidence is when we're first "introduced" to them, we only see three soldiers.
Tumblr media
But there's a FOURTH bodyguard. The fourth one pops up randomly in the background and he's so obscure, the FMA wiki gives the wrong chapter for his first appearance. He actually makes his first appearance in a single panel this chapter.
Tumblr media
While Kimblee is lying about his intents to help the Rockbells, he is being honest about his admiration for them and his respect for Winry as well.
I love how Ed and Kimblee have a moment of solidarity here.
Tumblr media
In case anyone's interested in knowing, here's a list of all the mistakes Ed made while reciting the Periodic Table:
He lists Flouride instead of Flourine. Flouride is an ion of Flourine caused by Flourine gaining an additional electron
He states Sodium Carbonate, a compound which has uses in things like cleaning detergents, rather than Sodium
He jumps from Silicon (Element 14) to what is supposed to be Element 24 (This is between panels so it's not a big deal)
Instead of Chromium, Ed uses Chrome, which is what you call Chromium that has been electroplate coated over some other metal
He skips Selenium which comes after Arsenic
We know in this chapter that Smith's party had gone into the tunnel a week ago. ctually makes the timeline slightly awkward though. So now I have to re-contextualize a few things to fit this new data. I had thought the party that was wiped out was a third party that went in after Armstrong and the Elrics. But now, I think they went in sometime between chapter 66 and 67.
In chapter 67, a scout team returns to report what they've found. Then Major General Armstrong takes the Elrics into it. I'd thought the returning scout party was the entire team. But now I think only some of the scouting party came back to report their initial findings while the rest of the team went ahead.
So that means there wasn't a third expedition team that just got unlucky. There was only a single team and within 24 hours of their expedition, they delved too far and were discovered by the shadows.
And speaking of which, we now know who it is.
Tumblr media
This is one of those reveals that feels so out of nowhere. There are some hints, primarily from the chat Wrath and Pride have in chapter 49. I mentioned it in that chapter, but there's enough hints that Pride is short.
And Pride's shadow having to leave the rescue team alone implies his shadow cannot act independently of his physical body. So when he has to be Selim, he can't guard the tunnel.
As far as Ed and Al know, Major General Armstrong has sided with Central and Briggs has fallen into their control. We know that's not the case and the scene with Roy shows us how very much that is not the case.
Major General Armstrong may absolutely hate Mustang on principle, but she does trust him with her back. Considering what she's learned about the corruption in Central, she may have chosen to contact Roy because he's the only person she can be certain is not compromised. This benefits Roy. He's been busy amassing his own pieces to play his games. He has a gun with which to shoot his opponent. Now he has a shield to defend himself.
And why would Central demand Ed's help at this point? Are they hoping to break him? Do they want to show Ed how powerless he is to stop them to the point that he has to help them instead?

I reappear from the abyss to drop more F2U AU Ideas upon you! Today we have a FMA: Pokemon au!
In this AU, State Alchemists are Gym leaders (some sample teams below) but they all have various classifications other than typing. Sure, you have Ed, Full-Metal, and he runs a full steel type team, and Mustang with his fire type team, and Alex Louis with his fighting team. But then you have Tucker with his horrible chimera team, Kimblee who G-maxes his team, and Marcoh whose team is all pokemon tied to healing (and he used to mega evolve them but he no longer does so unless necessary). They also still do alchemy and can boost their pokemon attacks using alchemy (I.E. Mustang can do his flame alchemy with fire from his pokemon, and Ed could use alchemy to change his Scarmory’s feathers into a big sword.)
As a trainer in the region, most of your time is actually spent hunting down the wandering gym leaders to ask them to battle. Alex Louis is typically the one trainers look to face first, because despite his high rank, rumors are out that he is the nicest gym leader.
Alphonse is travelling with Ed, but isn’t a gym leader, rather counting himself as a trainer and happily showing off his collection of gym badges. Those who challenge him thinking he’s the Fullmetal are always shocked and terrified when instead Al pulls out one of several cat pokemon. Ed is the worst gym leader to face because he just tries to bite you and punch you himself half the time, and then his party is weirdly overpowered for no reason.
Winry is still an automail tech, but she’s also skilled in apricorn crafting, and can whip up pokeballs easily in a pinch. Olivier isn’t a gym leader but you better be prepared before coming across her team because her ice types are the kind that will FUCK YOU UP.
Scar is trying to eliminate the gym leaders and is also collecting badges to gain the right to challenge the Champion as well.
The champion is Father. And the elite four are Pride, Wrath, Sloth, and Envy. (Greed was originally going to be an E4 member but he defected and is now on the side of defeating the champion.)
----
Some Team Ideas:
Edward Elric:  -Skarmory (of course). Angry bird is constantly smug that it is taller than Ed. Angry bird and Ed fight constantly -Lucario: Ed’s starter, Ed hatched the Riolu egg when he was very young.  -Metagross: Ed caught it at full hp with a pokeball, on the first ball he threw. Ed loves him very much. -Bisharp. This pokemon joined Ed because theve bad taste in knife hands. They are sparring partners.
Alphonse Elric: -Galarian Meowth/Perrserker: Al’s starter. Ed got him a steel type cat egg because he has a bias, but knew Al would also have his own bias. Likes to ride on Al’s shoulder. -Torracat: Soon to be an incineroar, this one is what really throws people off when they mistake Al for the Fullmetal.  -Sylveon: I said the Eeveelutions are cats, and Al is full of LOVE at all hours! -Purrugly: Al’s handsome boy, his name is probably Blorbo. Has 6 contest ribbons just because. Wears cute sweaters when the weather is cold. is perfect in every way.
Winry Rockbell:  -Houndoom: This smart dog is the AU version of Den, down to the automail leg. Is winry’s companion, and he’s better at identifying what tools Winry needs than Ed is. -Happiny: Still not evolved, this little creature was found by Winry and taken in in memory of the Chansey that worked with her parents. Happiny keeps a wrench in her pouch instead of a rock.
Alex Louis Armstrong: -Buzzwole: Should the first gym leader have an Ultra Beast? Probably not. But Alex does anyway, because Buzzwole just showed up one day for a flexing contest. Don’t worry, he’s only like level 15 when you challenge the gym.  -Machoke: I’m going for an aesthetic don’t stop me -Makuhita: This little girl is working to get muscles like her fellow pokemon and her dad. Alex showers her with love daily. Can often be found tucked under Buzzwole’s arm like a football.
Oliver Mira Armstrong (The Ice Queen): -Beartic: The first out of the gate. This Bear is always at least 10 levels higher than your ace. And it’s the lowest level on the team. Why did you piss off Oliver so much she’s fighting you? You’re gonna die. -Lapras: Look, your fire type strategy isn’t gonna work here. Oliver may have all ice types but she’s good at what she does -White Kyruem. It’s not a surprise she has a legendary, is it? It shouldn’t be. She’s the ice queen.  -Abomasnow: sure it’s easy to beat, but it has snow warning and can set up blizzard again if need be. Plus it’s holding that item that makes blizzards last 8 turns. That means you know what’s up next, don’t you? -Froslass: The other ice queen. It can and will ruin your day.
Riza Hawkeye:  -Intelleon -Intelleon -Octillery -Intelleon -Magmortar: her dad’s old pokemon.
Roy Mustang: -Typhlosion - Roy’s cyndaquil starter, all grown up. A normal Typhlosion. Hates the rain and will not come out of the pokeball when it is raining. -Heatmor: Roy loves his stupid baby anteater his scrunglywungly, his precious angel. Mustang hatched the egg himself.  -Salazzle. She’s a bad bitch. She’ll also fuck your shit up. -Combusken: Has an eviolite, is affectionately called the better Fullmetal. Very squawky.  -Talonflame: The ace of the party, a very good bird.
Shou Tucker:  -Oranguru: The first pokemon that appears able to talk? Shou “adopted” it three years ago, around when his wife disappeared. -Houndstone: Wait....why does it sound like Nina?

got into a convo while moderately tipsy about this— once they’re old enough to go out drinking with team mustang, what kind of drunks do you think ed, al and winry would be? or maybe mustang’s men (including hawkeye)?
my friends and i thought ed would wear himself out and end up a teary / emotional drunk (not just about upsetting things! you could ask him to explain an alchemical theory and he’d start tearing up about how beautiful it is). we thought winry would start giving unsolicited advice, and al would get really snarky / be a little bit of an asshole. ur thoughts or headcanons for them or others?
HAHA you asking because of all in a night's work?
lol I love the idea of
"Hey Ed, explain X rune used in mechanical transmutations"
Normal Ed: *tries very hard not to start infodumping*
Drunk Ed: AHHH OKAY SO *rants for two hours*
can't mask your nd symptoms when you're drunk :)
I like to think Al is more than a little bit of an asshole and roasts everything in existence. He deserves it
and lolll winry turning into a makeshift therapist is great. I imagine she, like Ed, will info dump to anyone about engineering stuff (although she certainly doesn't need alcohol to do that) and come up with extremely harebrained mechanics ideas, some of which have potential, some of which end in disaster.
As for Riza: she never dances when sober. She dances when drunk. She's not good; she's never had any training, but she gets lost in the music and Roy thinks it's the most beautiful thing.
[also. fun fact: I'm not old enough to drink in the us. The only reason all in a night's work is even somewhat close to accurate about alcohol and bars is because @mildly-nerdy helped me a TON with alcohol shizz lol]

Okay, this was fucking bullshit and Ed wanted a refund on the terms and conditions of being a Truth- damned child soldier. (Sure, maybe the whole child-soldier thing was kinda his fault because he and Al decided to play God in their basement and attempt to resurrect their very dead mother but that was beside the point. )
Gunfire echoed in the air and stray bullets sent up small explosions of snow every time they hit the ground, the acidic smell of blood and alchemical energy penetrating everything in the area. Ed narrowed his eyes as he peered onto the battlefield, the snowy landscape riddled with bullet holes and a hazy fog had settled in the air. Ed moved to bring his gun back up, only for a bullet to shoot past and embed itself into the soil centimeters away from his face, sending a spray of dirty snow leaping into the air. He ducked back behind the measly cover the trenches he had transmuted into the ground had to offer with a highly undignified "Oh shit!" .
"Chief!"
Havoc looked at him in alarm as he reloaded his gun with practiced ease, gloved hands filling the gun with shells quicker and smoother than most vets he had seen. Ed shook his head at the silent question with a small frown and a short "I'm fine!". Ed poked his head over the edge of the trench after readjusting his hood so the white fabric covered all of his hair, (He didn't want a repeat of last month, all of Mustang's team, even Colonel, well General now,  Bastard himself hadn't let him be without one of them near him whenever they were on the field.) He quickly brought his rifle on the edge of their cover, ignoring the ache in his right port, and put his eye to the scope, barely flinching at the cold metal as it settled close to his skin. The battle around him ceased into nothing but white noise and yet, he was still aware of everything, Teacher made sure of that, and later on, Hawkeye too. After a few moments of searching a Drachman soldier had popped their head from their little hidey spot behind a bullet-ridden tree, the large white cap barely visible against the treeline, and Ed adjusted accordingly. He inhaled and rested his finger on the trigger.
He exhaled, and another bullet joined the fray.
The Drachman reared back as blood burst from their skull and onto their fellow soldiers, the red soaking their clothing and highlighting them against a stark white background. (The snow almost reminded him of the Gate and Truth, nothing but pure white nothingness. ) It was a perfectly good shot, but the feeling of victory and pride the other soldiers talked about every time they killed never came in a rush of serotonin, no glory buzzing in his bloodstream, just the nearly overwhelming sense of guilt and shame that came with every life stolen. Like Mustang and the others said, for you to survive war you had to get your hands dirty.
One is All, All is One.
It was a meager comfort, it was against everything he stood for as a person, the 'Hero of the People' as some called him, filled with admiration and respect they would never have for a military dog, and yet they still respected him and hell, loved him. It was obvious in every action, large smiles, open greetings, always asking how he and Alphonse was. It was rare he didn't know at least one person from every place they went to. It made everything bittersweet, blood painted his hands and death has begun to weigh heavily on his shoulders. The thought of killing hurt him in ways Human Transmutation couldn't, but what hurt him even more, was the mere thought of dying in this stupid war, abandoning his baby brother without the ability to feel the warmth of the sun or taste Winry's pie.
That always bolstered his will to survive, Alphonse and Winry's names a symphony of love and promises to thrum in his mind. 'I won't make them cry. I won't hurt Al even more than I already have. I won't leave Winry and die in a stupid war, I won’t let her suffer another loss like that.’
With a shuddering huff, Ed refocused his rifle, ignoring the ever-present ache in his heart.
Hey Al, hope you haven't adopted any more cats while I've been gone. How are things going on your end in Amestris? Bet it's been sunny and warm and not get-fucking-frostbite-the-moment-you-go-outside degrees. It sucks and I won't hesitate to set some shit on fire. Things are pretty tough and I think I deserve to commit some arson, you know, as a treat. Have you seen Armstrong lately? I bet he's reached a new level of stripping alchemy.
Ed snickered at the thought and tapped his pen against his lips, though he hissed when the brass hit his still healing lip from where a Drachman had managed to get the drop on him and get in a punch or two with fucking brass knuckles of all things. That was not a fun day, though the once purple-nearly black bruises on his jaw and cheek finally begun to heal, it just added a whole new level of ache to his body. The cold that had seeped into his joints ached with every movement he made which fucking sucked. Surprisingly Mustang decided to not be a bastard for once in his life and managed to snag a few re-usable heat packs for his ports, which was bound to be some form of contraband. Mustang had been pretty nice about giving them to him as well, no snide remarks or short jokes, just pure worry and care, something only Team Mustang was allowed to see. It made Ed feel... warm, that he was privy to such a rare thing, even if he loathed to admit it.
Havoc made the mistake of teaching me poker, I've already swindled him and Fuery out of so many things. Even Hawkeye was laughing every time I beat them! Still lose against Mustang and Hughes though. Who knows though? When I get back we can teach you as well! Now wouldn't that be fun? Smashing everyone out of a game with pure wit and Elric talent, how does that sound? You and I make a formidable team, add Winry into the mix and we'll be unstoppable!
"Hey Fullmetal got a second?"
Ed pulled his eyes up from his letter to stare at fucking Mustang himself, the bastard's face was pale yet still had that arsenic sweet grin on his face. Ed frowned and rose an eyebrow. "What the fuck are you up to now?"
Mustang raised his hands. "Who said I'm up to something?" He asked, amusement dancing in his eyes.
"You're always up to something."
Mustang didn't even deny it. Fucking bitch.
"We were both summoned by the higher-ups. I came to grab you on my way."
Ed scowled at set his letter down. "What do they want this time? Last time they asked for us they wanted multiple Drachman bases razed to bare bones by midnight." And unfortunately, he and Mustang were so efficient that they were done before midnight. Ed transmuted the metals in the area and tore the bases open, then Mustang would swoop in and torch everything else. (Ed had nightmares about the smell of burning flesh and their screams still echoed every time he smelt smoke and heard that distinct snap. Any survivors were taken to be interrogated by Briggs soldiers.)
Ed didn’t want to think about it.
Mustang's face soured at the reminder. "Hopefully, we aren't getting any more orders like that."
Ed snorted despite himself. "When do you hope? You always plan."
"Even I can't predict what runs through our superior's brains," Mustang said dryly.
With only a small amount of difficulty- thankfully Mustang didn't say anything- Ed managed to lever himself up from his spot by the heat generator and store the heat pads in his pack with a mournful look.
------------------------------------------------------
“ARE THEY OUT OF THEIR MINDS? WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD GIVE THIS THE OKAY?”
Hughes blinked as Ed stormed past him in a flurry of blue and gold, Roy trailing after the teen with an equally pissed expression aimed at the back of Edwards’s skull. What made Hughes even more worried was that Roy was rubbing his thumb and middle fingers together like he was ready to snap.
Despite what Edward and Roy said, Roy genuinely cared for the kid and had desperately tried to shield him from the horrors of war, not that his efforts had mattered in the long run. War was brutal, and everyone on Team Mustang and a few other soldiers remembered the early months of the war, and they all preferred to pretend they didn’t hear Ed waking with strangled screams tearing out of his throat and desperate sobs being muffled into his arms in the dead of night, and later, Roys’s arm around his shoulders while Edward stared blankly at his hands, his SO’s silent comfort grounding him in reality.
Hughes lifted a hand as Ed began pacing the rec room, his braid half undone and Hughes could hear the joints of his automail creaking from the cold.
“I mean sure, I’m a bloody good alchemist and I’ve been in the military for what? Five years now? But that doesn’t mean I should be promoted !”
Oh, so that’s what this is about. And based on the new star gleaming on Edward’s shoulder and his outraged outburst, Ed was forced to accept his promotion whether he wanted to or not. That…. wasn't the wisest of choices on their superior's parts. If this was their way of sucking up to Ed, then sheesh they were digging their graves.
"Well, they respect you enough to promote you, so maybe it's a good thing?"
Alyna, a young soldier in their platoon that had a slightly unhealthy amount of hero worship for Ed, piped up from where she and her sister were playing some convoluted card game from their hometown with Havoc and Fuery. Hughes had no idea how they played it, but Ed and Havoc both seemed familiar with it, so it must’ve been a country thing.
Ed snapped his head around to stare at her with blazing eyes, molten gold boiling in a fury few could match.
“A good thing?” He hissed, looking like a feral street cat. “It’s not just a promotion, they’re going to have me transferred.”
Those fuckers want to what?
Immediately Havoc was slamming his cards to the table, smoke dropping from his open mouth in shock.
“Bullshit! They can’t just do that!”
As if all the energy was sapped from his body Ed’s shoulder drooped in defeat. “They’ve already made it clear that they’re not taking no for an answer.”
Fuery approached with wide eyes. “They can’t take you away. We’re family.” He said quietly
Hughes whipped his head to meet Roy’s eyes, and the look in them said everything. Guilt was swimming in his eyes, alongside unmistakable fear.
Roy was scared for the kid and knew he wouldn’t be around to keep an eye on him. Hawkeye stepped forward and placed a hand on his shoulder. “Where is he being transferred to?” She asked quietly.
Roy scowled as he slipped over to join them. “Briggs.” He said shortly.
“Briggs?” She hissed, the only sign of her composure slipping. Roy nodded sharply. “We may be still in Amestris, but those in Briggs are being sent into Drachma.”
Hughes sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “I’m not sure if that’s worse than out here or not.”
“Oi! Are you guys done gossiping over there or what?”
Hughes snickered as Roy screeched out  “It’s not gossiping!”
“Is too!”
As an uneasy layer of normality fell over the room as laughter broke out, a looming cloud hanging in the backs of their minds.
They would all dread the day Ed’s transfer would happen, but they would dare to hope he would survive.
If not for them, then for Al, right?

family christmas
Hi @wowzermax ! I’m your secret santa and it’s soooo nice to meet you! Here is your Christmas present. I had a clear vision for this, but the execution was so much harder than I thought :( I hope you like it anyway. Much love!!
Content: Royai, EdWin, fluff, drabble Word Count: 774
It was the evening of December 23rd, and Team Mustang was in the process of closing the office for the night because the entire team, save a few receptionists, will be leaving for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
“This was pretty nice of you, General. Giving us two days off?” Havoc said, smirking. He pushed his chair in as he leaned over his desk. Hand underneath his chin, he grinned at General Mustang, impressed.
Roy frowned at the laxness of his subordinate– not just Havoc, but all of them. Breda and Falman lightly laughed at the conversation, while Fuery spoke to a quiet, smiling Riza with big hand gestures.
“Hmm. Don’t get used to it, Havoc,” Roy said with a frown. This only widened Havoc’s grin. As the room’s chatter died down, he approached Roy and placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Merry Christmas, General,” Havoc said before turning to the rest of Team Mustang in the back of the room. “Merry Christmas everyone!” He was joined by everyone else’s banters of greetings as they all headed out the door and through the building. Reaching outside, they went their separate ways in the parking lot. Despite being Christmas, Central didn’t seem to have much snow this year, but the cold air was still refreshing.
“I’ll see you bright and early tomorrow, sir,” Riza paused and smiled curtly before heading off to her car. Roy looked down, smiling, before deciding to call out to her.
“Lieutenant! I’ll drive us to the station tomorrow. I wanna try out my new car.” Riza only pretended to not notice his lame excuse, and confirmed that she’d wait for his arrival the next day.
………………
Although Amestris wasn’t a big country, it still took more than half a day to travel from Central to the Resembool station and another few minutes to walk up the hill. The sun was nearly setting by the time the Rockbell residence came into view. By the time they got inside, everyone else seemed to already be there: the Elric brothers, their wives, and Pinako.
“General! Lieutenant! You made it!” Alphonse happily exclaimed. He was leaning over Winry’s arms, and it took a second for Roy to realize that the bundle that Alphonse was looking at was a baby. Both Riza and Roy’s eyes widened for a moment, but recovered fairly quickly.
“Merry Christmas, indeed,” Roy muttered. “Edward, you didn’t tell me about this,” he shouted into the kitchen with a smile.
From the doorway, Edward peeped his head out. Frowning and clearly irritated with the General, Edward replied “Yeah well, I don’t have to tell you anything! I don’t work for you anymore.”
The others could only laugh at their banter, remembering similar moments a few years back. Throughout the night, there was much laughter and catching up. There was even some dancing, where Winry gave her baby to Al while she pulled a reluctant Ed to the dance floor. Riza sat next to him, watching the baby sleep.
“She’s cute, isn’t she?” Al asked. Seeing Riza nod, he continued. “Seeing Brother and Winry so happy and content with taking care of her, Mei and I were thinking of starting our own family too. There used to be so much sadness, but having a family… I think it changes things, you know?”
Although those words were meant for Riza, Roy heard them just as well from his position across the room. Alphonse was right. Seeing the happy family, the small, human child that was created through love and not alchemy… it was amazing. It was a miracle. So when the party was over and he and his lieutenant walked back toward town to rent a room, he stopped and stared at her.
“Roy, what’s on your mind?” Riza asked.
Taking note of her casualness, Roy replied, “Lieutenant, it’s against military regulations for two officers to have more than friendly relations.” He looked away while saying so. Riza’s eyebrows furrowed, but before she could get another word in, he continued. “But I’m going to be Fuhrer someday. I’m going to change Amestris and its military.” Hoping that she’d catch on, he finally turns towards her with sternness.  “Marry me, Riza Hawkeye. We may not be able to wed today, or tomorrow, or next year, but say that you’ll wait for the day I rule this country with you as my equal-- my wife.”
But even with that question, he knew what her answer would be, because they were Roy and Riza. Everyone knew that they would stick by one another’s sides no matter what. So Riza smiled.“Of course. I’d follow you into Hell.”

Royai Horoscope
A Roy and Riza Character and Relationship Analysis based on their Zodiac signs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Image Source: Fullmetal Alchemist Playing Cards
Disclaimer: I am not suggesting horoscopes are scientific means of analyzing personality nor that it is accurate. This is just for fun!
Roy Mustang
Birthday: 06/01/1885 (on basis of Roy’s Day and his actual birthyear)
Zodiac Sign: Gemini - the Twins
Element Sign: Air
We may think he’s more suited in being a Fire sign, but if you take a closer look with how Roy creates fire, it all makes sense. Hiromu Arakawa shares in one omake that Roy creates fire by controlling the amount of oxygen in the air. I believe Flame Alchemy is based on the concept of control. We only notice the times Roy has lost control, but we fail to appreciate all the times he maintainted it. He’s not what he seems from the surface, and this is why we think he’s always not what he appears on the surface. Which leads us too conclude that he may appear two-faced.
Traits:
two-faced - like most Geminis, Roy tends to have a reputation of being two-faced. His personality depends on how others treat him, and how he views them. He loves to stir rumors and gossips, creating an impression that is completely different from who he actually is (E14, FMAB) (I’m making a more in-depth character analysis about this, but one that is based on psychology)
(this is a long post, so if you want to keep reading, be my guest!)
social chameleon - being the life of the party, Roy knows how to socialize with different types of people. He can easily read the room and know exactly what other people want to hear from him, as with most Geminis. This makes him extremely popular among townsfolk and political leaders.
social chameleon - being the life of the party, Roy knows how to socialize with different types of people. He can easily read the room and know exactly what other people want to hear from him, as with most Geminis. This makes him extremely popular among townsfolk and political leaders.
flirtatious - and of course, Roy is popular with women, as stated by Team Mustang (FMA 03, E37). He’s naturally flirtatious, whether he does it on purpose or not. Like most Geminis, Roy jumps from one date to another. But we see him go to dates to collect information before tackling a conflict, another trait of Geminis. He asks Olivier for dinner as a disguise to relay information and planning (FMAB, E42-46 im not sure which one). Again, every action he does isn’t what it appears on the surface. And of course, he deliberately makes people believe he’s a womanizer. He shares his reason for being Führer was to let female officers wear miniskirts (FMA 03, E13), but later on we see it’s because he wanted to protect people (FMAB, E10). This leads us too concluding that he’s...
intelligent - most Geminis don’t appear to be smart at first, but when taken a closer look, they’re rather cunning and have remarkable wit. As seen with how he strategizes plans, Roy’s intellect is unquestionable. He even competes with Maes Hughes during their military academy days (FMAB Special E04). Aside from that, he is also emotionally intelligent, as in most Geminis. In another iconic scene, Roy immediately knows something is wrong upon talking to Riza on the phone (FMAB, E38)
optimistic - in general, Geminis are the kind of people who look forward to the future rather than attempting to change the past. Roy is actually optimistic. We never see him falter or mope around, he’s always the one who says “we can do better next time.” He tells Ed to stand up and have a chance on getting their bodies back rather than sulk about what had happened (FMAB, E2).
impulsive - due to Gemini’s adaptability and versatility, they never stay in one place. We see Roy move from one date to another and procrastinate on paperwork (FMA 03, E37). Riza frequently tells him not to be reckless, (FMAB E01, E05 - encounter with Scar, E19 - coming to the scene). When Roy had offered her flowers, he reasoned that he got “too drunk” and ended up buying a carload of flowers (FMAB, E38). Another one of his two-facedness. Although it was an excuse, Riza paid no attention to it. Maybe because she was that used to his impulsiveness lololololol. But we see this trait heighten when he was consumed with anger and vengeance on Envy (E53-54).
Riza Hawkeye
Birthday: 09/01/ 1887-1889 (based on Riza’s day and age range)
Zodiac Sign: Virgo - The Virgin
Element Sign: Earth
Earth signs are always grounded. We see how Riza always keeps her calm in situations (except when she thought Roy died lol). It’s no wonder how she holds Team Mustang together and keeps their sanity. Sometimes I wonder how she puts up with them lol.
Traits:
perfectionist - like in most Virgos, we see Riza always striving for the best. This is most evident in her specialty: accurate gunshots. When a military officer complimented her for striking the bull’s eye in the firing range, she told him “I still have a long way to go.” (FMA manga, Volume 6). Kimblee even taunts her, “Doesn’t it make you feel satisfied when you hit the target on one shot?”, whose words hit Riza like her own on-point bullets (FMAB, E30). In FMA 03, we see her blame herself for not being there on time. Roy replies by saying the world isn’t perfect, but that makes it beautiful (FMA 03, E51).
hardworking and organized - she gets things done stat. She does Roy’s paperwork and always reminds him to do them. Aside from that, she is very dedicated on work, she even delivers paperwork to the Führer’s residence late at night (FMAB, E37). Her dedication for work is most evident when she stood up all night while Roy was in a meeting in Central HQ (FMAB, E25). Other than that, she is obedient, she never fails to comply any order as long as it is within her morale. Even on the verge of death, she told the gold-toothed doctor she won’t die since she is “under strict orders not to die.” (FMAB, E58)
stubborn and uptight - in line with the previous trait, most Virgos are stubborn and uptight. Once they set their mind on a plan, they want it followed pronto! Roy even comments that Riza is stubborn (FMAB, E24) when she insists she will wait until Roy’s meeting is finished. Because of this, Riza may appear uptight. She bosses around Team Mustang, basically. For this reason, co-workers regard her as Roy’s babysitter (FMAB, E17). She tends to follow an everyday routine, as seen on how she and Black Hayate spends their mornings (FMA 03, E37).
reserved and untrusting - for some reason, we see Riza as reserved. I can’t pinpoint an exact moment where she’s shy, but I guess we assume she is because she rarely speaks. Riza isn’t an open book, and Virgos tend to have trouble trusting other people. This is evident since Riza holds the secrets of Flame Alchemy on her back. As an independent person, she may find it hard to rely on someone. It might have been hard for Riza to choose to trust Roy, and doing so might have caused a whole lot of consideration. That is, until she finally asks Roy, “Can I entrust you my father’s research?” Well, we see how much trust she gives to him since we never once saw her complain about anything— except with Roy.
honest - Riza is known to have a dry humor, and she never holds back on any comment she has. It’s seen on how she makes jokes with Rebecca Catalina (FMAB, E46). She’s blunt with her words— even calling Roy, her superior, an idiot or is useless (FMA 03 E15; FMAB E01, E05, E19, E53). She even asks Fuhrer Bradley a personal question, “Is that even called a family?” (FMAB, E42). Riza also declined Pride’s offer to join their forces, even in the face of threat (FMAB, E37).
patient and observant - aside from dealing with Team Mustang on a daily basis, her patience is very apparent on her character. In order to take a shot, she waits for the perfect timing. She’s also very observant, especially on the things Roy fail to communicate verbally. Whenever they visited Hughes’ grave, it was shown that Riza can sense Roy’s grief, and knows something is up (FMAB E10, E50)
intelligent - other than all the aforementioned reasons, we see Riza’s intelligence as she was able to count and remember the steps from Laboratory 5 to the door. And they figured out it was between the Fuhrer’s residence and Central HQ. (FMAB, E21). A more iconic scene was when she was able to figure out who Pride is (FMAB, E37).
kind - We see Riza as empathetic, especially to the young. She is in good terms with Winry (FMAB, E02; FMA Star of Milos) and Ed and Al (FMAB, E30). We see her voluntarily adopt Black Hayate (FMA 03, E13). Roy even admits it, “She may appear like that, but the Lieutenant is really kind.” (FMA manga, somewhere sksjskdjsks idk what volume)
Roy and Riza Compatibility
(based on their signs)
Both of them are polar opposites, like Roy is outgoing and Riza is shy. These might create conflict or it might also complement their flaws. Roy’s spontaneity helps with Riza’s rigidity. Just as Riza helps him stay on track with his work, Roy lets her lossen up a bit (FMAB E17-E19, where Riza is disguised as Elizabeth).
Riza’s critical untrusting judgement and Roy’s two-facedness may create conflict between them. Plus, Roy being easily bored might not work well with what Riza wants, which is routine and constancy. There might also be a problem with Roy’s flirtiness, which might ignite Riza’s doubtfulness.
Fortunately, they have both lessened these problems since they have laid their relationship on trust. Riza has entrused her back to Roy, along with the secrets of Flame Alchemy. Roy, on the other hand, has also entrusted his back to her (and his life, as she is free to take it if he will stray away from the right path). We see this on FMAB E54, when Riza stopped Roy from being consumed by revenge. In that scene, we also saw how Roy’s impulsiveness was balanced out by Riza’s strict compliance to rules and routine.
Aside from their differences, they also share many similarities. With their high emotional and intellectual compatibility, they entertain themselves in witty banters (well we often observe that). They share the same realistic attitude, and goals towards life (creating a better world even through a muddy path, FMAB E30).
They also share a negative trait of not being able to express their feelings easily. They may have trouble putting their feelings into words. Good thing they both learned to communicate nonverbally— and this is seen on another iconic moment when Riza’s glance saved them both from threat (FMAB, E54). After all, they’ve “known each other for quite some time.”
Again, this is all for fun! It’s fun to read horoscopes and get writing prompts from there wahaha here are some of my references: Gemini, Virgo, Gemini and Virgo compatibility
I’ll be making a proper character analysis soon right on my fma analysis blog @fullmetalanalyst !

Helloooo!
Love that you sent this message, honey! <3
I always struggle with coming up with headcanons, I probably need a specific topic, but even then, I’m not that good when I’m asked on the spot. I have a lot of ideas when it comes to art, or opinions, or preferences in fics, sure, but...
Yeah, one thing, actually. Although this is not really a headcanon, as it’s mostly based on canon, I just have this BIG soft spot for the Shamballa movie:
I imagine that in the FMA03 timeline, Roy realized way too late how much Edward, as a person, meant to him. Obviously, in canon Roy cares about the Elric brothers a lot. He hadn’t realized just how his feelings for the two differed.
Because when Ed is gone... let’s just say I think it wouldn’t have been the same if Al had disappeared. And at one point, he realizes this, and that’s when the self-hatred intensifies too much and he goes up north in that cabin. Of course, he already felt guilty, unworthy: Hughes hadn’t come back, and now Ed too, and they were both better people than he is, with a better moral compass, more love, more life inside them, and that’s just too much, because Roy, on the other hand, is the one who survived. And Roy is the one who brought Edward down this road, isn’t he? He should’ve protected Ed, but now he’s gone.
Understanding exactly how much he cared for Ed just breaks him, finally.
Roy avenged Hughes, but lost Ed the same night. He killed so many people, and he couldn’t even protect those whom he cares the most about. So he shuts his heart down. He spends each night repeating to himself that it’s his fault, that he’ll never use his alchemy again because he is simply not good enough a person to wield it, that Ed didn’t simply disappear, he is dead. And in the morning he believes it.
Believing that Ed is dead is his chosen hell, that’s how he’s gonna pay for all he did. So when he hears from Winry that Al is sure Ed is alive, that Al is searching for him (in a cut scene from Shamballa), oh god... He hates it. He hates the hope that immediately sets his dead heart ablaze. It had never really been snuffed out.
He still spends every night repeating to himself that Ed is dead, it’s your fault, you couldn’t avoid his death, if he cannot live why should you be allowed to hope, to love, to even have a dream? But now, IT’S JUST DIFFERENT. Each morning is hell, because he dreams of Ed, he has sweet, sweet dreams about him (he’s alive, he’s back), and nightmares. So each morning is filled with Ed, and hope, and it hurts.
And then, the earthquake in Amestris, it’s Ed, it must be Ed, and it makes a smile bloom on Roy’s face for the first time in years. It’s just...incredible. That’s what Ed does to him. So, he lets himself feel hope to the fullest and he calls Winry and rushes to Central. To Ed...
So basically my headcanon is that Shamballa is a love story, I swear. Sorry that got long.
...
ED, ON THE OTHER HAND, REALIZES ROY IS A VERY HOT BASTARD HE WOULD LIKE TO KISS WHEN HE SEES THE EYEPATCH... I just know it, trust me. Now all those dreams about dark eyes that bothered him in his teenage years make so much more damn sense, uh.
Also, another headcanon is that Roy just has a soft spot (read: weakness) for Ed AND EVERYONE KNOWS AND USES IT AGAINST ROY. Roy is skipping paperwork again, what would Edward say, Colonel? Team Mustang ask Roy to pay for another round of drinks but he refuses and, Ed would’ve happily paid! And so in the end Roy does. He is known to be manipulative, sure, but he’s weak against Ed. Or the idea of Ed. The mere mention. Only Ed doesn’t seem to be aware of his every mood influencing Roy’s. And let’s not talk about his puppy eyes.

Do you have any ideas for fullmetal alchemist brotherhood headcanons I can use in my Post?????If you do send them right away please
I only have one that I’m exceptionally passionate about, and that’s if Hohenheim had cried when he left his bois instead of leaning into the nonsense that is toxic masculinity, then maybe Ed and Al would’ve had a lot less trauma. And Ed might’ve been a lot more trusting. So basically everything that happened is because of Hohenheim not crying about leaving his baby bois
Aside from that…….
When Mei introduces Al as her boyfriend, he’s declared her royal concubine by the Chang family, and Ling approves the title as Emperor. This I want. More than life itself.
So basically whenever he visits Xing, he’s just a walking piece of fine golden booty tied to the Chang Family’s princess - which has to elevate her status given he’s a golden eyed golden haired “perfect being”
Mustang finds himself walking home from the office one day and is suddenly apprehended by shadowy figures who pin his hands and throws him down and shaves off his moustache.
As he lies there, de-moustached, he catches a glimpse of a stray blonde curl pushing out from underneath a black cap and the familiar figure of his Hawk eyes running away from the scene.
The next day, he greets his team who all compliment his clean shave and he sets their eyebrows on fire. Then Riza enters the room and also compliments his clean shave and he stares at her ticked off for a sec before throwing himself into his work to avoid her amused stare
Ed is a stay at home dad the first few years of his kids being born. Winry goes and gets the bread. Ed wants to be there for his babies.
The first time he leaves is for the Al-Mei Xing wedding bc he can’t bring the babies across the desert. But then Al and Mei have a second wedding in Amestris so they can all be together.
Al fixes the armor and its stands in the office that he and Ed share when they’re both home
Ed also still carries his State Alchemist pocket watch but he’s taped his family photo over the “Never forget/Dont forget” marks
Mustang still only ever clicks his fingers as his main move bc he forgets that he can do other alchemy having learned the truth
Riza remains Mustang’s main bodyguard well into his eventual reign as Fuhrer (which he fought Olivier tooth and nail for) but they secretly get married with only a handful of close friends who attended, but everyone knows anyway
While I would love if General Armstrong was the Fuhrer, I like to believe Olivier decided she hated the stuffy bureaucracy of Central and all the paper work she has to do, and she can’t get away with straight up murdering the people she doesn’t like so strikes a compromise with Mustang to be one of his senior staff but still operates from the north…
Uh. Idk more but there you are!

The Live Action Fullmetal Alchemist Movie Part 6: Let’s Kill Hughes
Hey guys, I’ve been having some issues with the blog not...updating my drafts. So in case you’re wondering, that’s where I disappeared to. Give a round of applause to the support team for finding a solution until it gets fixed but as of right now I’m on like a private window with my extensions turned off and writing this from both tumblr and a LibreOffice document. Hello ads, nice to see you back.
Last we left off, we were a hop and skip away to lab 5. In the anime, this was a sequence where there was a bunch of fighting with suits of armor, and they kept that in this movie, but...not the people you think would be fighting are going to be fighting.
Tumblr media
Listen I’m not like super knowledgeable about the world of Matte painting, but I like that they’ve unintentionally made this world building where whoever is in charge of making these red bricks basically owns everyone’s nuts. Everything is made out of the same red bricks. Like I know this is a show about homunculi ruling the world but I feel like the red brick guy is hellllllla more egregious. Freakin Monsanto over here.
I assume they had a 3d model and was like “we can just keep using it” and damn, they sure did. And inside of this brick building is, unsurprisingly a lot more red brick (although I think this is partially, if not entirely, an actual real life set.)
Tumblr media
This next part is...such a lesson in pacing. Not necessarily a lesson to follow, but definitely a lesson to learn from maybe their non-example.
(watch Hughes die under the cut)
And what’s interesting is that there were a lot of good lines in this upcoming segment. There were a lot of good moments—bu there’s just so many. Maybe too many. You gotta prune your script occasionally, it’s like a tomato plant.
Like I’ve been doing a stress garden to cope with quarantine and Covid and 3+ months of life endangering wildfires, and I learned that you gotta prune the sucker vines off your tomatoes, although sucker vines can also make tomatoes. It sucks to do because I love tomatoes, and I want as many tomatoes as possible, but when you prune the plant, you get bigger better tomatoes that are more worthwhile than the suckers that can infect your plant and make it really sick.
Sorry that made me sound like 5000 years old with that gardening analogy. If you need me to solve your small town murder mysteries, I’m ready.
So it’s like...kind of tragic that it came together as kind of nonsensical when you can tell that it’s so close to being something better.
Like we have some reason up to this point to believe that Ed would have a freak out here...but like...a sobbing on the floor screaming at the walls type of freak out? Was there enough time devoted to this blow up, or did he walk into this room and immediately start screaming? Because he sure did walk immediately into this room and start screeching like a broken bird.
Tumblr media
Like last recap, which was about 2 minutes ago in screentime, was this fun and quirky montage with Hughes. Now we’re sobbing into this rusty factory.
And I know what’s going on because I’ve seen the anime, but if you haven’t seen it—would this emotional break down make any sense? We were told by Dr Marcoh, “check out lab 5,” but we were only going to this factory on kind of a wish and a prayer. I really wonder if people who don’t know this show could follow past this point.
And then while we’re still adjusting to “yo, Ed just took it from a 2 to a 10 like immediately” Al is like “Hey I noticed no one is paying attention to me, and I have to lay a wicked fart:”
Tumblr media
and then both brother’s just have a freak out. Gotta all be freaking out in this random ass Unity asset that was probably also used for some college grad’s first battle royale.
Tumblr media
Pacing is just everything. And what’s SO HARD about Full Metal Alchemist is that there really is a lot of content to cover, there’s a lot of emotions to go through, and when you only have about 7 minutes to cover what was about 3-4 episodes, if I remember correctly, it’s kind of a zany mess.
And if you were going into this movie hoping they wouldn’t illustrate Al as a large idiot baby, then you share the sentiments of most people who saw this movie. Al is like...kind of reduced to a whiny big baby and is...not cute. Like Al is low key kind of menacing throughout this movie, not just because he has this CGI armor thing going on, but also because Al is...so impressionable and unhinged.
Something that I didn’t appreciate enough when I watched the anime was just how important Barry the Chopper was for Al’s logical character development.
Tumblr media
Yo...These bangs…
...I’ve realized that every show I recap here just has the worst hair styles. I honestly never thought much about hair at all until I watched like 200 hours of Yugioh and all of this movie and also 6 seasons of Once Upon a Time which featured some LOOKS (but only recapped like 3 episodes, sorry if I got some of y’all excited. That was when we had no reason to cap everything because the capping community for Once was very alive and very exciting.)
Tumblr media
By hitting him with a wrench (Al does not feel pain, ps, so he doesn’t need to be hunched over like this) Winry reminds Al that Ed would not risk his life for a fake brother (which may be a line from the anime or the manga but I don’t remember) and crying just...a lot.
Like it felt as if she had to shoot all of this out of order. Same with Ed’s freak out here. Movie’s aren’t really shot in succession and it’s up to the director to make it feel coherent and logical...this felt scattered, like the actors really didn’t know what was happening in the scenes leading up to it so they just cranked it to 11.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then I guess Ed was either so insulted that Al punched him or was so upset that Al made Winry cry (again, this movie really tries to sell the EdxWinry ship and from me that’s a really big compliment), that Ed just started laying punches to extend a fight scene that was kind over before it started.
But symbolically there is a lot nice things going on here, Ed only uses his fleshy hand so he bleeds all over Al, hurting himself as much he’s hurting his brother. Implying more than just this fight, but suggesting that their whole journey of trying to find this sorcerer’s stone is just going to hurt both of them in their quest to save the other.
And then Al says something along the line of “it hurts!” to infer that he’s got this broken heart which is when they both finally just freakin stop.
Tumblr media
Such a shame the pacing, which was a mix of too quick, and too many tomatoes, kind of made it hella blindsiding.
Again this was so many episodes of FMA and they stuffed it into so few minutes, it’s wild.
Especially since Ed is like...he’s cast as an adult! He’s an adult! At no point in the movie so far have they called him a kid, and they’re not pretending that he is one. But like...he acts like such a child because in the original, he was one. And, while this movie steps so far away from the source material, if should have committed and either stepped completely away or committed completely. Of course “should” is one of those things where we’ll just never know. A wish into the ether of hindsight being 20/20.
But lets get to the thing that you all came here for. This is where this movie gets BONKERS:
Tumblr media
So Hughes actually draws out a pentagram between the different places in Armestrias, including Ishvaal, leading us to think that he’s figured out the whole dealio of turning the country into an alchemy circle. But, for some reason only helps him find the real lab 5.
It didn’t...that’s a different thing.
And it has been a long time since I’ve seen the ending of this movie—and maybe it was so offhand that I forgot if they actually do bring up turning the country into an alchemy circle--watch me eat my words, it could happen—but yo, we are finally killing Hughes—but we’re over halfway through this movie. And you may wonder...so uh...what...then what could possibly happen? There’s too much anime left!
Now I’m glad they kept this scene really close to the anime, although I haven’t watched the anime in a hot minute. It’s kind of an iconic scene so you don’t forget.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like I do genuinely enjoy the campy parts where they were bringing up some of my favorite nostalgia of the original.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then when you are like “ah, this is exactly the same as the anime. I can relax and watch as all my expectations are fully realized.” This twist happens.
Tumblr media
YAH.
It’s a change!
So in the anime we had a really fun arc where we were trying to save Lieutenant Ross for being framed for killing Hughes. It’s probably my favorite part of Full Metal Alchemist, actually, it was so clever and a really thrilling chase. It was also like...half of season one.
Anyway, they cut it. They reduced half a season into 7 minutes. I know that, because each of these recaps is about 15 minutes of the movie.
You may look at this recap and be like “wait...this all happened in 15 minutes??” because yeah, this all happened in 15 minutes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The same squad of people we see in every single scene of soldiers comes up to arrest Ed, which is weird, because I thought this band of soldiers was the military under Cl. Mustang’s command so like…shouldn’t they be arresting themselves? Mustang was over the command of more than 2 people. If we are suspicious of Mustang’s buddies then everyone in this movie would be in trouble.
And that’s when I realized that these guys were just unnamed soldiers and not a part of Mustang’s band. They only had like this many extras and just hoped we wouldn’t keep track of who is who, but I KNOW I’ve seen these guys this whole time. There are only like 6 people in this army. I see you movie magic—I see what you’re trying to do.
Anyway, Ed gets thrown into an old timey opera house that occasionally gets to be used for Middle School graduations. Or maybe also a mortuary where they charge you for funerals.
Like I know it’s supposed to be the capital building but like...this looks so weird when it’s live action. I remember the anime had this kinda feel to it but in live action it’s like…
...this is a weird ass capital building…Why do they have curtains like a Granny Holiday Inn in Reno, Nevada?
Tumblr media
Thankfully, Hawkeye is here to explain to Ed what just happened because we, the movie viewers, were kind of surprised by that plot twist.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like there were many ways you can condense half a season into 15 minutes, and I dunno if I would have just changed the murderer. It is a solution you can do. You can just point blame on Mustang and skip that whole Ross segment but like….
…then why write the movie?
Obviously, they had to make the movie, it had already been funded, people were really excited about the idea, and I do not envy the people that had to hack and slash with the Full Metal Alchemist script, but it is interesting what they decided was important to the original content, and what was unimportant. All that stuff that showed how Mustang was brilliant and two steps ahead of everyone else? Unimportant. All that stuff we had that showed how Mustang cares a lot about protecting other people and also cares about Ed and Al? Unimportant.
It really changes the dynamic, and it’s kind of fascinating to go into this cold because it’s been like...a year for me since I’ve watched it...and just see how different everything is without all those supporting characters that when I watched the anime I just assumed were mostly useless (Though fun). Turns out they all had a pretty significant part of making me care about Ed, about Mustang, about Al, about all my main characters.
FMA is very character driven, and this movie is mostly just...plot driven.  There’s kind of a great debate in literature about plot driven vs character driven. Movies and TV tend to be very plot driven, because they are very expensive to make, so they follow pre-formatted plot beats like “Save the Cat” or “The Heroes Journey” and other ones (there’s several to choose from).
They’ve made a fine science out of at what point a TV show should introduce the main, at what point they should suffer doubt, at what point they should shun their hero’s journey, etc etc. They know it down to the page number of the scripts they are writing. I know this, because it’s readily available on the internet and people fight about it all the time. This is why a show may suffer developing a character—because they just don’t have time and they just don’t have the resources to do something out of the box. Movies doubly so, because every minute of film can cost thousands of dollars.
What’s interesting about this is that FMA, the original FMA, does follow these beats. It was a manga sold by a huge publisher so it had to follow those beats. But, it has managed to do it while still being character driven. Yo, that’s so hard to do. This story was already written to be hyper condensed and structured when it was made into a Manga, and then it was condensed again for an anime, and then it was condensed yet again for this movie. It’s like a game of telephone, and at one end you have a very character driven story, and then at the other, it’s just totally plot.
Like it’s just a really huge risk to take. This was really, really risky.
Tumblr media
PS did you miss Shou? Did you think we’d be done with Shou Tucker? No. Because this movie is gonna end at some point and rather than introduce other people...we’re just gonna stick with Shou and only have one miniboss.
Tumblr media
(It has a freakin radiator in it?)
So then this next part happens and it’s low key hilarious.
Tumblr media
The whole time.
Mustang and Hawkeye knew what lab 5 was this entire time but Ed just never asked for some reason despite working with those two for what is inferred to be YEARS since his childhood.
Tumblr media
Hey PS, did you miss that brick building? Because it’s back.
Anyway, Mustang decides to take this underground where we can recycle the tech crew posing as extras that we used in the shot above us. Would not be surprised if a few of these are someone’s husband or wife on set.
Usually when I watch a movie I don’t get this feeling so much. But this movie...the latter half is like...EMPTY.
...this is going to be all movies made during Covid, I just realized…
Tumblr media
Mustang is stopped by an angry Lieutenant Ross, and then we get this series of events.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And when you’re like “...Sorry?” Mustang’s like “I can make it weirder.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And he just, without any warning or anything, lights Lieutenant Ross on fire. Multiple times, and it’s pretty intense and everyone who’s holding a gun just watches it happen is like…
...well I guess it’s too late to just shoot the guy...
…and like do you seriously not carry around a fire extinguisher when you are trying to manhunt Mustang? This is the one guy you want to wear fireproof clothes around. You have the technology. You at least have the technology for buckets of water. Like no one want to throw a blanket on her?
Just want to...watch? I guess?
Tumblr media
Mustang just looks like a nut from this series of events instead of a genius--which is what I think they were originally going for. The pacing does that, youknow? Pacing.
And, out of the corpse pile stands Envy.
Tumblr media
Envy has a pretty good look, I appreciated his whole look and that unlike the anime where you only find out Envy is a guy because someone told you on a forum somewhere and you were like “wait WHAT?” the movie is live action so you won’t make that mistake and embarrass yourself online.
Tumblr media
Ed has only ever seen Lust once, and she walked in from off screen, stabbed a guy, and walked off. He’s just like...having a time because he’s done zero research into homunculi, and really, at no point in this movie are we going to give him time to figure it out.
Also, there’s this shot where Lust and Gluttony just walk in from behind them in the tunnel and it’s like…
….so no one noticed these two just hanging out back there?
It’s so freakin funny. This movie is gold. I love it.
Now If you just got here, this is a link to read all these recaps in chrono order:
https://steve0discusses.tumblr.com/tagged/fma/chrono
Have a good one, and stay safe! 2021 has been...weird nuts...and it’s still January somehow??? Weird times. Overall, please stay safe, it’s weird out there.
Also, if you’re like “I don’t remember this scene actually” here’s the original Hughes dies scene that inspired the movie (since the movie definitely was like “we’re only going inspired for this one nerds, get mad”)--some shots were inspired cut for cut.
youtube
And obvi this is on Youtube so it’ll probably get taken down eventually, but that’s why it’s flipped.

For the character ask, just for some variety, Ed Elric & Roy Mustang ;)
bats, you absolutely spoil me (questions from this post)
Ed
uhhhh the only consistent thing i see him as is demiromantic and some sort of ace
Ed/Winry has been my otp since.... before i knew what an otp was. i’ve had the joy of a sexuality/gender experience where i went from hella vibing with winry to hella vibing with ed ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and they’re a het endgame couple that i think was handled/progressed well, so they have a special place in my heart
Riza + Ed hands down, but i’m endlessly amused by Ling + Ed so
Ed/Riza, Ed/Mei, Ed/Envy, Ed/Kimblee (i’m horrified how many fic there are for them??)
AUTISTIC AF. he’s clearly high functioning, but his “genius” with alchemy even before the Gate, his v obvious trigger about his height, his compartmentalisation.... all very spectrum. al’s spectrum too, but got all the social skills
“Maybe life has to equal trade. Maybe you can give up all you’ve got and get nothing back. Even if I can’t prove it, I have to try.” (or: “Good think I’m so little.”)
oh god uh focussing so long on something that he’s not sure who he is without it
so many anime reactions make me want to curl up, but ed being especially loud and shortsighted makes me muy uncomfy
i suppose he’s not REALLY a problematic fave, but he’s not really a cinnamon roll either. maybe a spicy mango roll.
Roy
mostly attracted to women, but not completely straight. he doesn’t bother thinking about it more than that
Roy/Riza, if done right and i wasn’t 100% happy with their canon end, but i also friend-ship the fuck outta them and they’re that couple that it sort of doesn’t matter what sort of relationship they have, they just love each other a whole feckin lot, and that’s enough for them
Riza + Roy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, Maes + Roy, Alex Armstrong + Roy (underutilised big brother/little brother dynamic, where they both think they’re the big brother 😂)
Roy/Any of the Homunculi, Roy/Maes
knows a bunch of like scoundrel-type skills like picking locks and grifting and card tricks and slight of hand, because his “sisters” would teach him stuff during downtime or to keep him busy as a kid. he doesn’t tend to tell people, both as secret weapon, but also in an attempt to distance himself from that world for political reasons (and to protect madam christmas’ girls from association with him)
“How are you supposed to support me from below, now?”
i don’t actually identify with much specifically from roy hmm.... maybe i’ll say i appreciate and admire his loyalty and genuine love for his team
his misogyny especially in early omake strips, the whole miniskirt thing, altho i also get this is an exaggeration as part of the character he’s made for himself for the military
uhhhh i’m gonna go with bread pudding on this one too

lily watches fma:b, eps. 37-40
I can only watch 2 episodes at a time because I keep having to pause and write angry screeds in a text document. I suppose this is what is called “engaging with the source material” in media studies.
Cut for extreme length and also me ranting about Hohenheim because FUCK THAT DUDE. Also, worldbuilding stuff I don’t understand.
Ed reciting the periodic table to get his mind off his boner for Winry is just perfect.
Meanwhile, Winry's nerding out over combat automail and Kimblee's just sippin' his coffee watching the whole thing
Kimblee got Winry to like him by saying he admired her parents, argghhh
Pride is revealed to be Selim Bradley and harasses Hawkeye because he's a little shit... also it conveniently allows Buccaneer's tunnel team to escape. Why is Pride simultaneously in Central AND Briggs? I guess we'll find out.
Hawkeye going home and seeing her shadow and realizing just how fucked they are is PERFECT.
Kimblee tells Ed he'll give him a Philosopher's stone if Ed helps him find Scar and Marcoh and finish the job at Briggs (i.e., kill everyone to make a stone). Ed asks--very reasonably, I might add--why Kimblee is going along with the homunculi and his answer is basically "for the lulz". (Oh, and they let him kill people instead of locking him up for war crimes.)
(although I'd argue the homunculi only let him do so when it's personally convenient; they have no qualms about keeping his ass in jail otherwise)
(also: please note kimblee ISN'T in jail for war crimes against Ishval, he's in jail because he murdered some Amestrisian guards so no one would know he has a Philosopher's Stone.)
Ed's like, "so Winry, you're a hostage for my good behvior and I might have to comnit mass murder, fyi" AT LEAST HE FINALLY FOUND A WAY TO TELL HER
love how winry forces her way into the convoy and kimblee just goes with it because he's too busy to argue.
(meanwhile, the end credits still have her at the atelier in Rush Valley, lol)
Yoki's flashback in the 1920s film style is HILARIOUS (if biased) account
Scar and Kimblee face off. I'm reminded of the 2003 anime where iirc Scar sacrifices himself to utterly destroy Kimblee halfway through. no such luck here.
I'm still not happy that Scar killed Winry's parents in this version. It was much more interesting when it was the Amestrisian military--specifically, Roy Mustang, one of the so-called good guys.
(It's not that it was morally okay for Scar to kill the doctors who saved his life--or anyone--just because of their race but it's a whole 'nother ballgame when the murder cover-up for a military dictatorship and the perpetrator is a character the audience has come to root for vs. misguided revenge)
What IS interesting here is Scar confronting Miles, asking him how he can serve in the same institution that killed his family. Miles says he's trying to change minds from the inside; Scar is highly skeptical but claims to be glad there are people like Miles in this world (who aren't so consumed by hatred and grief that they can do that kind of work, instead of becoming a vigilante).
one of Miles' troopers has a backpack that's a phone. Okay... WHAT? I guess if they have automail they can have extremely bulk cellphones, but... I don't understand the tech in this world.
brief detour for Al to lecture the chimera prisoners, okay
Yoki actually has a good idea for once!
I don't understand the chimeras saying they want their bodies back - it seems like they can shift from human to their other form and back (they do it a few minutes later) so... I get that they've been experimented upon and it's horrible, but they're not quite in the same desperate straits as Al, who doesn't have a body at all, or Nina Tucker *sob*. Or am I missing something obvious here??
...okay, I think they were moved to DIFFERENT human bodies than their original forms? It's kind of unclear from context.
Just as I was admiring Winry's piercings for the bajillionth time, a random dude tells her they'll cause frostbite so she takes them out and gives them to Ed as a token. And probably also so Kimblee will suspect the ruse later if/when he notices that detail.
Scar's like, "man, why'd I have to kill the FAMOUS doctors, sigh"
Al has a vision of his body and it's SO FREAKING CREEPY, YO (I like the detail that his nails are really long)
Cut to Father playing with little mini versions of Ed and Al on a transmutation circle in his lair OH YEAH THAT'S CREEPY - he needs 5 people to complete the circle. Ed, Al, and Hohenheim are each little skull-people, Izumi is "a possibility," and that leaves one more... probably Roy.
I love Hawkeye and Roy's verbal codes, Roy hitting on Olivier, Olivier straight up admitting to Bradley she offed Raven, Roy's apparent shift into the flower business, etc, etc.
TIME FOR A FLASHBACK.FINALLY SOME EXPLANATORY BACKSTORY.
Okay, so we meet Slave 23 in an alchemy lab - his master used his blood to make a creepy blob in a flask that is talking to him and names said slave "Van Hohenheim" (because he didn't want to be "Theophrastus Bombastus", lol.) There's a time skip and Hohenheim becomes a skilled apprentice alchemist thanks to the blob's interference and education.
Note: I HAVE SO MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT ALL OF THIS. Also, WHY.
(but let's be real, I am distracted by the fact that young!Hohenheim, like old!Hohenheim, is extremely hot.)
The King of Xerxes summons the blob to ask it about immortality. I can already tell this is going to end well.
The blob tells the King the secret - cut to laborers digging a giant circular "irrigation canal". also, people start dying in coordinated attacks at specific geographic points just like in amestris.
I still don't understand how this works, though. In the 03 version, you just need a bunch of people to die all at once aftermaking a few preparations. It was city-scale, not country-scale.
also apparently, there's been a time skip because Hohenheim is significantly older than before (his job is to carry the blob in its flask around, I guess?). He's so excited about the immortality thing yet seems to have NO IDEA what it entails.
The blob made the actual center of the circle where Hohenheim was standing so everyone else dies. I'm not sure how that works because it's only a few meters off--is it really that precise?--but okay, whatever, sure.
Also, the blob regards Hohenheim as "blood kin" because it was made from his blood and... it's not WRONG.
the gate opens, the flask is shattered, Hohenheim is now immortal, and everyone in Xerxes is dead, and... Hohenheim was totally an innocent bystander who just HAPPENED to be caught up in it all?
not gonna lie: I'm not thrilled about this development.
I preferred the 03 version where Hohenheim was actively a bodysnatching jackass who decided to DO BETTER BY NOT DOING THAT. somehow the fact that he ends up immortal without trying here just sticks in my craw.
oh, no, but this means that HE KNOWS EVERYONE IN HIS PHILOSOPHER'S STONE PERSONALLY, DOESN'T HE? AHHHHHH
Father takes on Hohenheim's human form because they have the same blood and it's convenient?(also:hot, though I doubt the blob is interested in sex appeal.)
Father: Isn't it great? immortality, amirite? Hohenheim: *through gritted teeth* Thanks, I hate it.
Father and Hohenheim each got half of Xerxes' population, aka half the power.
turns out this was all a dream-flashback and Hohenheim is actually asleep on a train in the present and Izumi wakes him up.
have they met before? signs point to no because Hohenheim doesn't seem to know her. I'd ask how Izumi recognized him, but Hoheheim looks JUST LIKE ED so it's not like it's *hard*.
most awkward parent-teacher conference ever? but actually izumi starts coughing up blood and Hohenheim realizes she's performed human transmutation and opened a gate and uses alchemy to help her.
he can't restore the lost organs (I'm not sure WHY not - he has a philosopher's stone, that's like the whole point) but it helps.
AND THEN HE JUST COMES OUT AND SAYS HE'S A PHILOSOPHER'S STONE IN HUMAN FORM, ARRGGHH, WHYYYYYY, I don't get why he can't just fix her!!
sig decks hohenheim and I'm so thrilled, even if it doesn't actually take. THANK YOU SIG, I LOVE U.
Also: if Hohenheim had stuck around, he could have healed Trisha and she probably wouldn't have died and his sons would never have lost their bodies trying to bring her back, so FUCK YOU HOHENHEIM, THIS IS LITERALLY ALL YOUR FAULT. (And apparently, the homunculi are too, at least indirectly). FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU.

Heart, Mind, Soul & Hand
Alphonse considered himself a lucky man to meet Mei for a second time on equal footing. And, if he was being honest with himself, he knew it would be an honor to remain by her side for as long as she would allow. But first, as always in Xingese culture, the formalities had to be observed — intricate, perplexing and time-honored formalities that found the younger Elric brother in woeful need of advice. What does one get for the alkahestress who has everything?

Alphonse Elric understood many things.  He could wax poetic about the difference between alchemy and alkahestry, expertly parsing the differences between tectonic energy and the revered dragon’s pulse.  He could ruminate, at length (in either his native Amestrian or Xingese), about the ethics of human transmutation with a fire in his eyes that dissuaded the most curious upstarts.  And after many years of instruction, Mei Chang had even managed to teach him how to brew a decent cup of tea.
It was impossible to say when Alphonse had fallen for the Chang clan’s most respected alkahestry practitioner, but if he had to guess, he’d wager that it happened during their quiet hours of study in Emperor Ling’s palace archive.  Often, Al suspected that a force other than fate had so often placed them on the same committee or seated them side-by-side at the lengthiest banquets.  And whether this force’s name started with Li- or La- or Ed- or Win- didn’t seem to matter when all was said and done.
Alphonse considered himself a lucky man to meet Mei for a second time on equal footing.  He felt privileged to be able to make her smile and giggle at his (still) awful pronunciation of Xingese words.  And, if he was being honest with himself, he knew it would be an honor to remain by her side for as long as she would allow, pondering the precise tone of her chi, admiring the intricate plats of her trademark braids or debating about what to have for dinner.
But first, as always in Xingese culture, the formalities had to be observed — intricate, perplexing and time-honored formalities that found the younger Elric brother in woeful need of advice.
Alphonse knocked on the office door and heard a familiar “Come in.” A warmth filled his chest at the sound of Captain Hawkeye’s voice. He stepped inside, and Hawkeye stood up, her eyes wide.
“Alphonse!” She smiled, her eyes crinkled around the edges. “It’s so good to see you. What a nice surprise. The team will be disappointed to have missed you.”
He smiled back. “I was actually hoping to talk to you and General Mustang.” He glanced at the door to the inner office. “Is he in?”
She inclined her head. “He is, but he is on the phone to the Fuhrer at the moment. If you wouldn’t mind waiting a while-”
The door to the inner office opened suddenly and revealed a purple-faced Mustang with clenched fists. “That sneaky-” He cut himself off when he saw Alphonse standing there, and his anger evaporated. “Alphonse!”
Still, he couldn’t help but notice that Mustang’s eyes searched the room. Alphonse suspected he was expecting to see his brother standing there. After all, they had been inseparable back when Ed was a state alchemist.
“Congratulations are in order if the rumours I hear of upcoming nuptials are true.” Mustang wrung his hand.
Alphonse smiled, pride bursting in his chest. “They are.”
“Well, well, you have aimed high.” Mustang winked. “Well done, snagging yourself a Xingese princess.”
“Sir,” Hawkeye scolded. She turned to Alphonse and embraced him. “Congratulations, Alphonse, we’re delighted for both of you.”
“Didn’t I just say the same thing?” Mustang muttered.
Hawkeye rolled her eyes as she pulled back.
Alphonse dipped his head. “That’s part of why I came actually, I wanted to give you invitations in person. Xingese custom dictates we deliver the invitations in person if possible.”
Mustang and Hawkeye glanced at one another. As usual, the pair seemed to be having a completely nonverbal conversation before turning back to him.
“Of course, we’ll come.” Mustang beamed from ear to ear. “Before you say anything, Hawkeye, we’ll reschedule any necessary meetings. We can’t miss this. Especially after Alphonse came all this way.”
Alphonse reached into his pocket and took out two ornate envelopes. He handed them reverently to the officers.
“Xing?” Mustang ripped open the envelope while his subordinate opened hers carefully. “I’ve never been to Xing.”
“How is Mei?” Hawkeye asked. “Pass on our thanks.”
“She is well, but she had to stay behind. There is a lot to plan before the wedding.” Alphonse sighed. “Her family has some very specific plans for this wedding.”
A small frown appeared on Hawkeye’s face. “Is there something bothering you, Alphonse?”
“Well, can I just get an opinion from a woman’s perspective?”
“Of course,” she said.
“It’s just that I wanted to get Mei a ring, but she seems bemused by Amestrian customs.”
“It doesn’t have to be a ring.” She patted his arm. “But it should be something that means a lot to you both. One of the reasons why jewellery is traditionally given is because women didn’t always have control of their finances.”
Alphonse nodded. “I guess I can understand that. It just seems wrong somehow not to give her something as a symbol.”
“Have you explained this to her, Alphonse? I’m sure you two could come to some sort of compromise.” She smiled reassuringly. “Try not to worry. I’m sure you two will figure it out in no time.”
“I hope so.”
“Would you like a cup of tea?” she asked.
He nodded. He was still unconvinced.
“I couldn’t help overhearing,” Mustang began as Hawkeye stepped out of the office. He was sitting on the edge of Hawkeye’s desk. “If a woman says she doesn’t want jewellery it means you haven’t given her the right one. You have to give her a ring to show your love and your commitment to her. What displays that better than a ring?”
Alphonse’s face fell. Confusion reigned.
Mustang slapped him on the back. “Don’t worry, I know of an amazing jeweller. He even makes bespoke rings if there is something there that you don’t like. By the end of this visit, I’m sure you’ll have the perfect ring.”
The young man had little time to reconcile the contradictory advice as Captain Hawkeye turned the corner, balancing a modest tray of milk, sugar and tea.  Alphonse took his cup, bowing his head in thanks and inwardly thinking that, perhaps, Hawkeye had not steeped the tea long enough.  Still, he sipped, grateful for the small comfort.
“Ring or no ring, what’s important is the bond you share,” Hawkeye said in summation.
Yet, Al couldn’t help but notice Mustang ostentatiously mouthing the word “ring” over his Captain’s shoulder with a confident nod.
...
There wasn’t time to visit the jeweller that General Mustang had mentioned.  In fact, there was barely time to catch the day’s last train to Resembool.  As Alphonse watched the scenery outside the window shift from industrial warehouses to rolling fields of farmland, he felt the hands of the clock rewind back to lazy days of traveling alongside the Fullmetal Alchemist.
As a disembodied soul, Alphonse’s existence had sidelined him from the simple pleasures life had to offer.  Nevertheless, the young man smiled as he grounded himself in the moment that and assured himself that, indeed, he could feel the weight of his suitcase leaning against his leg.  He knew that there was a warm bed waiting for him in the Elric family home.  He expected that the sweet scent of Winry’s apple pie would greet him as he approached the modest steps of the rebuilt estate.
And he was right on all accounts.
“Uncle Al!” Yuriy Elric exclaimed.
Ed and Winry’s oldest son must have grown half a foot since the last time his Uncle Al had visited, but no one would have known it from the way Alphonse scooped him up, hoisted him atop his shoulders without skipping a beat.  The blond boy kicked his feet and raised his arms high into the cool evening air.
“He’s here!  He’s here!  Do you see, Dad?  He’s here!”
The stocky build of Edward Elric carefully descended the steps with a small baby girl nested within the crook of his right arm.  It did Alphonse good to see his brother like this — paternal and settled with bags under his eyes but a sincere smile stretching the corners of his tanned face.  A tight feeling shot through Alphonse’s chest as he realized that their mother would have been especially proud of the father her oldest became.  Maybe, she would have been proud of him as well.
“Welcome back,” Ed greeted.  “Long time no see.”
“Brother,” Alphonse responded as the siblings exchanged a soft look.  “Happy to be back, for a little while at least.”
Ed helped Yuriy down and ushered him indoors.  “Run down to the workshop, and tell your mother Uncle Al has arrived.”
With little Sara still swaddled securely in one arm, Ed took Alphonse’s suitcase and bristled at the weight.  “Did you bring the Emperor’s whole library with you?”
Al chuckled.  “Just a little light reading for the trip, and about a dozen wedding invitations.  Mei sent some gifts for the kids too.  Don’t worry.  She’s holding off on the kunai until Yuriy turns 10 or 11.”
Ed grinned mischievously, jest concern dripping from his words.
“That doesn’t make me worry any less.”
With Ed’s response came the unwanted memory of an attempted human transmutation.  It had happened when the Elric brothers were 10 and 11 in this very house.  Nevertheless, those events felt foggy, like something from a past life.  Alphonse shrugged, good-natured smile intact,  as he ignored the tectonic remnants of such powerful alchemy seeping up from the basement that was now Winry’s workshop.  The weary traveler took infant Sara in his arms and admired his niece for the first time since her birth.
“I can’t imagine why,” he said.
...
Ed cooked beef stew for dinner though Winry’s apple pie was easily the best thing passed around the table.  It was second only to the small bottle of sake Alphonse presented as a present to his sister-in-law alongside his wedding invitation.  And as the stars burned brighter in the night sky, the conversation also flowed.  Alphonse confessed his dilemma to Winry and Ed, tacking on the contradictory advice of the General and his Captain.
“I think, perhaps, Mei would appreciate a family heirloom over a ring that would normally cost hundreds and thousands of cenz,” Winry suggested. “I could give you one of grandmother’s rings that she received from grandfather. I think Mei will love it.”
But Alphonse shook his head, determined that the answer to his dilemma was not the treasured ring that he knew sat in Winry’s jewellery box. “No. I can’t take something as precious as that. Pinako gave them to you.”
“I don’t mind parting with one.”
“Winry, thank you, but I really can’t. It won’t feel right,” he insisted with a reassuring smile.
“Then what are you going to do?”
Before Alphonse could voice his thoughts, Ed sprang from his seat and raised his index finger knowingly towards the sky. And had it not been for the baby he had rocked to sleep only minutes ago, Al could have sworn that the sweet effects of the sake had taken control of his brother, turning his cheeks a little too red and making his laughter much too loud for the sleeping baby.
With a wary glance at little Sara’s room, Winry attempted to shush her husband. But Ed followed with a hard clap on his back that threatened to regurgitate the spoonful of apple pie that Alphonse had only swallowed.
“You know we’ve still got your old suit of armor in a crate out back,” Ed exclaimed with much enthusiasm before a sneer crept along his potty mouth. “Bet I could dig out that metallic jockstrap looking thing since Mei’s clearly got you whipped.”
“Ed!” Winry warned with a hiss sharper than usual.
Distraught by more pressing matters, Alphonse simply offered a halfhearted chuckle as he rose to his feet, sliding his chair backward and stacking the empty dishes on the table into a short tower of plates. “I can help you clean up, Winry. And then I think I’ll turn in for the night.”
...
It was surreal to be in a bedroom that looked like the one he grew up in and sat in the same position but was, in fact, different down to its bones.  Alphonse would never tell Edward that his recreation of their family dwelling was anything less than a perfect replication. But, had he been critical, it was worth noting that the ceiling felt too low and the window was situated a few inches to the right of the original.  Or maybe Al was simply shorter now.
He smirked at the novelty of that concept.
Alphonse adjusted his sheets in an attempt to get comfortable.  He turned onto his side, propped a book against his pillow and rubbed at his tired eyes.  Still, sleep remained as elusive as the perfect gift for Mei.
He agreed with Captain Hawkeye — it did not have to be a ring.  But, as General Mustang had opined, there was no better analogy for unity than a circle, the many curves life could take molded by choice into a single line with neither beginning nor end.  And while Granny’s rings were precious, they were more meaningful to Winry.
As for Edward’s advice, well, he could be an ass.  A punch drunk, sleep-deprived ass who (for reasons unknown, perhaps guilt) never missed an opportunity to remind Alphonse that he had spent years cutting an imposing figure within a hollow suit of armor.  A suit of armor that neither man could bring themselves to part with.  A suit of armor that was sitting in the shed out back and…
Lightning struck in the form of a clever idea.  Alphonse sat straight up and pushed the covers aside.  He crossed his room in three determined strides and rummaged in the suitcase propped open on the desk.  Down the stairs, Alphonse moved with a rudimentary alchemy book and several pieces of chalk in hand.  With his feet crammed into Edward’s galoshes, he entered the small storage shed out back and re-emerged the next morning with a piece of handiwork that brought tears to Winry’s eyes.
...
Alphonse stepped into the library, his eyes landed on his soon to be wife who was writing what appeared to be a letter. Mei’s face lit up and his heart skipped a beat.
He was home at last.
Before he could utter a word, he had an armful of his Xingese princess. His arms pulled her close and he breathed her in.
“I missed you,” he whispered.
“Not as much as I missed you.”
Her fervent reply made him chuckle and he kissed her temple.
“How is the preparation going?”
Mei’s eyes flashed. “I feel like I am going to kill someone one of these days.”
He arched an eyebrow. “I don’t think The Emperor would be very happy about that.”
“It’s him I want to kill,” she muttered. Before Al could say another word. “Well, tell me did you bring me any presents from your travels?”
His girl could read his mind. He was sure of it. Feeling the inside of his coat, he pulled out a small box.
“I made this from my old suit of armor.” Al opened it to reveal a small ring. It was dull silver and plain with the smallest hint of copper blush. The only unique adornment was a white filament twisted around the band. “I transmuted pieces of armor from my breastplate, my hand and the place where Ed put the blood seal to make the ring. The white strand is what was left of my old hair.”
“Why those parts?” Mei asked as she regarded the simple piece of jewelry, holding it up the light. “Surely, that armor was precious to you.”
Al smiled.  His reply was well-rehearsed, but sincere all the same. “You’ve given me a place in your heart, a piece of your mind, an insight into your soul and you’re about to give me your hand in marriage. I thought I should return the favor. It’s equivalent exchange.”
Her eyes welled up. “It’s beautiful, Alphonse, I would be glad to wear it.”
A/N:   Happy (seriously belated) holidays, @linksphilosopherssock! You have not one but three back-up Secret Santas who tackled this gift as a team. We heard that you liked Royai, Edwin and Almei, so we decided to give you a little bit of everything. We hope that you like it and that the fic was worth the wait! We certainly enjoyed creating it for you.

Ho-ho-ho, it's your Secret Santa! I see that you're not a very demanding kid, and that leaves a lot of room for creative crafting. Great! However, I'll give you one last chance to throw in ideas that can leave your gift a little bit more... personal. Any other preferences or elements besides Royai? Merry Christmas!
ohoho hello it’s lovely to hear from you! OH YES i totally didn’t give away much to leave room for creativity (and I wasn’t sure what kind of gift I’ll be receiving so I didn’t know how I would ask HAHA and I might fill up the entire Google forms with my ideas so I’m very glad you reached out)
here are some prompts and stuff I like, you could choose from here! :> In no particular order!
• “Extended” Team Mustang family (extended, so it could include Rebecca, Armstrongs, Maria Ross, Denny Brosh and other military people! Particularly, I think I would like to see them hanging out on Rebecca/Havoc/Breda’s new bar. We saw their picture at the end credits so I assume Rebecca’s the new Madame Christmas. They could hang out there in celebration to Roy being Fuhrer 👀 if anti frat laws allow lol but we saw Hughes and Roy drink in the canon so I guess it is allowed?)
• Homunculi (Found Family 🥺 They did spend a long time together and they share one goal, we never get to see them ~bond~ on screen)
• Olivier!! Mira!! Armstrong!! (I’m curious about her upbringing and why she and Roy had some sort of rivalry 😆 Maybe something happened during the first East-North Exhibition or waaay before that)
• parental!royai (to edward/winry. this might be a common request but I realized I haven’t seen much fanart or fanfic about it, only meta analysis!)
• FMA x Game of Thrones (I’m not sure if you’re a GOT fan but this idea has been stirring in my mind the minute I first saw Olivier! This would work best as a fanart since it might take a long time planning for a timeline if it’s a fanfic. It could be drawn like a deck of cards where each fma character belongs to a particular house. And the Elric brothers could be Lannisters since “they always pay their debt.”)
• Roy’s upbringing (Do you find it weird how we never exactly know why he wants to be Fuhrer? I would like to know how you see it! We only see fanworks about him being at the Hawkeye Residence but we never knew what happened before that (or even after). Growing up in a brothel, Roy must have seen how terrible people treat the girls he lived with, how they see them like trash and all that. But the question still remains: why did he train at the Hawkeyes? Why did he go to the military academy afterwards?)
• Keeping up with the Bradleys (now this is another idea I’m laughing my ass out. I saw a post here on tumblr saying all the months Riza had with the Bradley’s could be like a sitcom 😆 and I think this would do best as a series of mini comics)
• grown-up Ed, Al, Winry, Mei Chang and Ed’s little kids! (I’d love to see how you envision post-fmab haha. Do the Edward children do alchemy too or does he forbid it? There aren’t much fanworks about Almei and they deserve much love 🥺 We never saw their romance blossom (i felt it was sudden— like boom Al just declared his interest for Mei Chang in the ending, and so I‘d love to see your take on what you think their “foundation” is)
royai-wise (you did say asides from royai so I assume it would be anything other than royai! but in case I misunderstood here are my royai-wise preferences)
• scar burning (hngh angst. The scar was too small to be made from afar so I assume Roy burnt it up close. I always imagined them hugging)
I might prefer the ones I wrote that aren’t royai-centered, for some reason I couldn’t squeeze more royai ideas from my head maybe my brain is too possessive and it couldn’t let go of royai 😆But it would be nice to add some royai elements in those prompts I wrote.
I think that’s it (I believe it’s plenty to choose from! :>) Are those prompts alright? Let me know if you wanted me to provide more prompts! My head is always brimming with ideas I’d love to come to life.
Merry Christmas to you!
