AN: thank you so much for the patience - i've been dying to put this update out. lots of new characters and lots of variation!! there are 3 major paths to choose between in this ep, i recommend trying them all out! and thank you to my betas for keeping me sane lmao

This update comes with a patch and UI refresh (Version 1.1.2) Notes are under the cut. If preferred, you can access them in game in the start menu.

STORY

EPISODE 01:

MC should now be able to smoke! Buying cigarettes at the shop was not triggering correctly. If playing with an old save, you DO NOT have to restart as code at the beginning of EP 03 has resolved the error. Player will need to restart if they wish to read smoking related scenes in previous episodes.

Updated MC Name selection. Player can now choose from a list of names instead of having to input one to proceed.

Player can now give Taha their chocolate bar if it's in their inventory.

When asking Maz about their scars, the second choice 'You want to ask about it but you're going to keep your mouth shut.' should now take you to the correct response.

Extended and updated 'End Game' scenes.

EPISODE 02:

If MC is faint after exiting the car, but also drunk, they should now get the fainting scene, followed by Dilani helping the MC in the bathroom.

UI + TECHNICAL

SETTINGS:

Autoname Save is now defaulted to ON. This is to add ease and flow to gameplay, especially for mobile, tablet, and app users, instead of calling for an inputted saved name. If player wants to input save names, toggle Autoname Saves to OFF.

Autoname Save previously only used the forename of the MC but now includes the surname as well.

Removed the Fullscreen toggle as it is only intended for desktop use. Player can still toggle fullscreen function via the UI bar on the desktop interface.

Added a choice indicator toggle. (This probably won't come into effect until EP 04 or 05)

Changed serif font from Vollkron to EB Garamond.

OTHER:

Changing the MC's pronouns via the Dashboard has been updated. Additionally, after confirmation will take player back to the Dashboard and not close the dialog boxes entirely.

Hovering over 'Personality', 'Motives', and 'Skills' titles in the Dashboard will now display an information box with a definition. Mobile and tablet users will need to tap on the title.

'Resume Game' now only appears on the main menu when there is an autosave in the saves log.

Choices styling changes.

General UI and button style changes.

Fixed errors with the text message styling.

Added styling for reading text off of a page in game.

Darkened blue in light theme 'Skyline' to reduce eye strain.

CREATE A SAVE

Introducing Create a Save! This feature allows players to quickly manufacture a save file and start at a later point in the game.

Set your identity, appearance, history, and statistics; including personality, motives, and skills. Continue to set key decisions made in previous episodes.

Randomise options available for creating a PC and key decisions.

OTHER

Fixed gaps and spacing issues.

Minor phrasing and sentence structure changes.

Grammar and typo fixes.

whew -- that's a lot of patch notes! apologies for so much that needed to be fixed.

this update shouldn't break/ mess with saves but as a disclaimer i will say, if you spot anything funky, broken, or you don't think things are triggering correctly, try starting a new save. the new create a save feature is incredibly code heavy, and it's been tested relentlessly, but i wouldn't be surprised if something crops up.

if starting a new save doesn't resolve your issue - please submit to bug report or just send me an ask/message.

some things have been meaning to get fixed for Some Time - thank you to everyone that is using the bug report form!

apologies if there are typos and/or bugs - this was a long one to edit and my lovely betas did an OUTSTANDING job reading so much for ep 3 - thank you so much again!!! this time i am going to give it a bit more time before i put together a patch so i can grab more error responses haha.

create a save has also added a wee chunk to the word count, somewhere around 6k, but i'm not including it in the episode 03 word count as it's purely code. so, if you think the total wc is off, that's why!

Mile and Apo had a fan screening today in Laos. During it, Apo's mic stopped working, so Mile held his out for Apo.

Back on May 21, Mile made a play of words joke. Rom means umbrella in Thai, so Mile joked that the best umbrella is Rom-saithong (his last name). Today they were giving out Man Suang umbrellas and Apo asked whether any of them is Saithong... I think Mile liked Apo bringing back his joke, what do you say?

Mile thanked the fans, but kept looking at Apo...

After the event, they went sightseeing:

Apo shared an update of a cake made by fans for them with their Man Suang characters. Am I the only one who thinks this looks a bit like a Thai wedding cake? I am? Okay then.

And the coffee vs smoothies saga continues, with another player entering the arena!

Summary of former rounds: during a Shopee game show that was taped Sep 1 at the latest, when asked what's Apo's fave drink, Mile said coffee, and Apo said smoothies. Mile has been discontent with this (*cough*blatant lie*cough*) disrespect of his Apo encyclopedia, and has contested it during one interview on Sep 7, during another on Sep 14 and once more during a roadshow on Sep 15 (as payback when Apo interrupted him).

Today, Mile's mom joined the fun. She chose to post a picture of herself holding up two cups of coffee, with the question which is better and answer that she loves Phi (Mile), but feels bad for Nong (Apo). The last part is probably why she took this picture while wearing both green AND yellow, their fave colors, and with one of the cups hinting at the coffee with citrus that Apo loves to make.

Apo also drank a smoothie right in front of Mile's face at the airport.

In other news, on Sep 13 Apo shared pics of Piaget watches, the only one zoomed in on was green. On Sep 16 he posted 3 more zoomed in pics of Piaget watches along the day. ALL are various shades of green (Mile's fave color). Coincidence? I think not and I can calculate for you how statistically improbable that would be.

you had survived the borderlands. no… what were you thinking? you survived the impact. something in your head throbbed every single time you mentioned the word borderlands. was that some sort of euphemism for the line between life and death? it would haunt you, waking you up in your deepest slumbers. dreams of playing games where you died if you didn’t win.

the worst part was the survivor’s guilt that came with being alive and having these dreams. your fiancé was with you on the crosswalk before the incident. you both had just recently left the coffee shop down the street and were joking about getting a dog to keep you company while he was away on business trips. it was a precious conversation to you, especially since you had anxiety about him leaving. these dreams that came after the impact seemed too real. it was as if you and your partner had lived through it together, until you didn’t. the recurring nightmare of him getting shot by a man dressed in all black gear, resembling a solider who’d turned against everyone in his sights.

you could still see yourself panicking behind a car, watching as your loved one mouthed ‘i love you’ before slumping over and bleeding out. the feeling of losing your breath with each inhalation and having to cover your mouth to avoid screaming was still present in your anxiety attacks each night. he left you alone with nothing but the sound of gunshots and cries of terror. it was hell on earth.

and then you discovered him, your distraction from the real world.

you could tell that he was a people watcher from the moment saw him. his brown eyes drifted across everyone in the room, scanning as if he was an ai created human to get statistics on the population.

he wasn’t as messed up as everyone else. blunt force trauma from the explosion on impact caused some internal bleeding that was fixed via surgery was what the nurses said, but other than that, he looked like he was in mint condition.

you learned from the chart hanging on his door that his name was shuntaro chishiya. it was an interesting name, almost reminding you of the cat from alice in wonderland. it made you chuckle to yourself every time you walked with your crutches past his room.

chishiya took note of how many times you’d walk back and forth from the vending machines and to your room, most times without anything in hand. at first, he assumed you were bored being stuck in the hospital after surgery. it was an easy assumption to make seeing as there were limited channels on the television and the nurses had to many patients to properly take care of them individually. but then he quickly realized it wasn’t just the boredom once he’d caught your eyes lingering over him several times. it always brought a mischievous smirk to his face, his brain going over the many ways he could fuck with you. ‘play dead? no, too traumatizing.’ he’d think to himself with a chortle.

you decided to go for a walk outside in the hospital courtyard, tired of being cooped up in your room for hours on end. the need for your crutches finally wore off as you could make it around with just a casual limp.

the sounds of birds chirping filled your ears while the sun warmed your exposed skin. your body was clad in clothes that your extremely worried best friend dropped off for you at the hospital. you’d begged them to bring some sort of outfit other than a hospital gown because it was growing tiresome wearing the same thing every day. the comfortable and baggy sweatpants ruffled in the wind while your oversized graphic tee did the same. it was a nice feeling, to be able to feel normal for at least a few minutes.

sitting at the table outside for too long let reality seep in, everything hitting you in slow waves. you wished it wasn’t a random patient next to you in your room, but instead your fiancé. tears welled in your eyes as beautiful memories filled your head. dancing in the kitchen at 3am while making microwave cup ramen, sending each other hilarious tiktoks that would nearly make you cry out of laughter, sharing kisses at red lights while driving to your parent’s house. it was long gone, and the guilt of being alive creeped up.

“is this seat taken?” a voice questioned, bringing you out of your thoughts. you looked away, rubbing the tears that threatened to fall out of your eyes before responding.

“no, go ahead.” you replied, looking over before sitting in shock. a lump formed in the back of your throat and your breathing began to slow down. anxiety washed over you as you became pale in the face, realizing the person you answered to was chishiya shuntaro.

his hair looked lovely in the sunlight. the blonde seemed almost shimmery with the light hitting it at the right angles. his deep brown eyes gave the impression of being friendlier due to the exposure making them a bit of a lighter brown. you couldn’t help but admire him, even with your anxieties getting to you.

“i’m gonna assume you already know my name since you’re so nosy,” chishiya began with a grin. waves of red washed over your face and ears with his words, making your heart rate increase. “but i’d like to know what your name is.” he ended, the grin still curling on his lips with each word.

you opened your mouth to speak, slowly getting rid of the heavy weight in the back of your vocal cords so that you could form coherent sentences. “it’s y/n.” the words came out softer than intended and you worried that he might have not even heard you until he shook his head. “look, i- i’m really sorry if i came off as creepy. i was just really curious about everyone in the hospital and wanted to know if i knew anyone and then i seen you in your room and-”

“it’s fine.” chishiya stopped you sternly, but with a genuine kindness in his voice. “you’re probably just as bored as i am, and i’m sure you noticed i’m equally as nosy. i just try to hide it better.” he joked with a small laugh. “so, anyways. how fucked up did you get from that, uhhh, explosion?” chishiya was trying to be precise with his words, regardless of the vulgar language he used.

“i sprained my wrist and broke my leg. they said i could’ve had internal bleeding, had i been closer to the impact.” you replied, your voice slightly shaky. “i’m surprised it wasn’t worse because…” your words trailed off as your mind wandered to a place you didn’t want to go to. chishiya’s face turned to a look of confusion before your eyes became foggy with tears.

“y/n?” the man questioned, reaching over and grabbing your shoulder. had it been months ago, he probably wouldn’t have even cared nor noticed your reaction. however, he decided he was going to change for the better. “we can talk about something else, if you’d like.” you shook your head and brushed his hand off by moving slightly, causing him to pull his arm back to the top of the table. you looked away from him towards the horizon where the sun was beginning to turn the sky a beautiful orange.

“i was going to say i’m surprised i’m not in worse conditions because my fiancé died on impact. i think… i think he saved me.” your voice regained its confidence with every word you spoke. “the doctor told me that the paramedics found his body over mine, as if he was trying to protect me.” you let out a deep exhale as the wind blew over your face, soothing some of the redness that came with feeling anxious.

chishiya’s face went from a look of confusion to a plain one. he genuinely didn’t know how to react. yes, he wanted to try to be a better human, but he wasn’t sure how to do that. you both sat in silence for a few moments before he spoke up. “do you want to go for a walk?” he quizzed with a raised eyebrow. you felt your face distort out of uncertainty. he chuckled to himself, using his hands to lift up from the chair and walked towards you. chishiya held out a hand to help you up. “c’mon. let’s get your mind off things.”

Wayfarer Episode 2 Has Released! ✨

The complete episode is now available to play on the public build. This is a massive update that adds 340k words of total new content to the game, with multiple paths, consequences, and outcomes.

An average playthrough of the episode is 81k words, or around 4.4 hours of gameplay.

What Is Wayfarer?

Wayfarer is a dark fantasy interactive fiction game. With the storytelling of a novel, the player choice of an RPG, and the dice roll mechanics of a tabletop game, the game creates a unique experience that changes with every playthrough.

You play as a Wayfarer, a mercenary from an order of warriors immune to magic. An important contract brings you to the city of Velantis, where you are tasked with the mission of retrieving an ancient magical artefact. Along the way, you are embroiled in enemy factions, meddling guilds, and escalating political tensions. Your choices will ultimately determine the city’s fate – and the fate of every person who lives there.

To ensure the update works properly on a browser:

If your save file is from September 2021, you MUST start a new file

If you encounter errors at launch or issues with saves, please read Troubleshooting Game Launch & Save Errors

to explain the dodgebolt thing: noxcrew released an update where i believe the team that lost the previous round, would then start with 2 arrows the next round, but as dream said:

in other words. in a 3-2 game a strong team gets the same advantage as a weak team, they also benefit from that advantage more than a weaker team. and if there was no advantage (like before) then it would be a bit better for a weaker team (at least statistically)

in 3-1 and 3-0 games it does benefit a weaker team but it doesn’t matter cause they lost. so statistically this change actually doesn’t help the weaker team at all, it only ever makes it worse for them

noxcrew changed the policy to make it the loosing team gaining 2 arrows about 1 hour after dream posted this and directly credited him lol

So proud of this one. The entire premise is here: Felix just doesn’t get akumatised, so what’s the deal?

It’s also a testament to how strong he is in his cousin’s eyes. Fitting, as this entire fic is about Adrien learning how much Felix actually needs him.

Blueberry passion fruit 🫐🍪

Felix prayed this was not another false lead.

He loves his cousin! He’s been searching for him for so long!! He double-checks even the most improbable hints because Adrien’s absence is a gaping wound in his chest!!! I’m so normal about them.

With this one, we begin in medias res! (That’s actually the title of the first chapter.) This entire first part focuses on the confrontation between Argos and Ryuko, and how we got to that point. Emotions are boiling over, as you can see.

You can immediately tell this one is going to be pure fluff! You can also infer Felix and Kagami don’t have children of their own, and they’re perfectly happy with it. Emilie could never.

It’s about the hypocrisy of ever-changing social expectations. It’s about defiance as a form of love. It’s about holding each other tight and gently all at once. It’s about Felix infodumping, because I do it too!

Turntable 💍

“So, you like to be onstage.”

This one… The torture of your abuser holding and using your very nature against you. This first chapter is one of the darkest things I’ve ever written, but it’s always darkest before the dawn.

Escape from the city and follow the sun 🌅

Kagami only wanted one thing from that evening: to not get akumatised.

This poor sweetheart is heartbroken but trying to put up a brave face… She’s convinced her emotions are inherently monstrous… If only someone swooped in to sweep her off her feet… 🥺

This one is best explained in context:

That ship had sailed already. Knuckles white against the pedestal table, careful not to crease the napkin as another coughing fit broke her, Kagami cursed her own lack of discretion.

What she really meant was:

“My mother cannot know.”

Brave, Truthful, and Unselfish 🧸

My favourite of the bunch! 💚💜 Fitting that it would be saved for the end.

Storyteller Felix is so dear to me, because we get to see him breaking narrative rules in his quest for freedom, love and happiness. Here, this is manifested by his starting at the end of the tale, ergo flipping the structure entirely. Iconic.

And of course, it’s foreshadowing for Emotion… All he’s ever wanted was to live happily ever after with Adrien. He’s just a child…

OK now let’s talk ✨ statistics ✨

1- How many works do you have on AO3?

222, though some are very closely interconnected.

2- What's your total AO3 word count?

3- What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

LOL, I had just automatically rearranged my stats graph to rank fics by kudos instead of hits. It's:

Season of Courtship (inevitably), a Darcy/Elizabeth canon-compliant engagement interquel I wrote as a teenager;

But Thou Didst Not Leave His Soul In Hell (always a pleasant surprise), a short AU in which Luke convinces Anakin/Vader to flee the Empire with him;

per ardua ad astra, a Rogue One+ANH Jyn/Cassian AU in which Jyn, Cassian, and Bodhi escape Scarif only to get trapped on the Death Star and forced to pass themselves off as Imperials;

we get dark, only to shine, a longggg yet unfinished AU of The Borgias in which Cesare and Lucrezia begin their affair during S1 instead of S3 (CW for canon sibling incest, murder, etc).

Contradictions and Varieties (baffling), a short Darcy/Elizabeth AU I wrote for a fest in which it takes them slightly longer to get together.

4- Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try, especially with fics I'm actively updating, but I'm always behind on it. I mostly just get distracted and forget.

5- What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?

Oh, interesting question! I don't write a lot of angsty endings, but there are a few options, and I think it probably would have to be the gift of men, a short (~1k) Fourth Age fic in which Eldarion goes along with a politically convenient marriage to one of Faramir and Éowyn's daughters, and falls in love with her, only for her to die of old age while Aragorn and Faramir are still alive and Eldarion remains young.

Honorable mentions: Set On This Path (Luke and Leia are brought up in the Empire + fusion with the story of the bloodbending brothers in B1 of Legend of Korra, complete with murder-suicide) and the last day (a chirpy epistolary fic that takes an abrupt turn after the genocidal attack that begins the Guild Wars games).

6- What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?

Um, just considering the ones that have endings, to be fair, and ... hmm, that's harder. A lot of happy endings! Probably the ones that are happiest for me, personally, are First Impressions (m!Elizabeth/f!Darcy re-telling of P&P) and whatever we deny or embrace (f!Cassian/Jyn).

7- Do you write crossovers?

Not often, but sometimes! Like now.

8- Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Yes! I've gotten hate more than once wrt Season of Courtship in various versions (even before it become so overwhelmingly the popular favorite of my fics). The rest has been on other fics and mostly on ff.net.

TBH the subtler stuff bothers me more than outright hate (corrections based on adaptations or fanon or expanded universe material I already said I wasn't using, concern that I might switch permanently to a new format I'm trying out, etc).

9- Do you write smut?

Very rarely. I respect people who can write good smut (hi incognita!), but I'm definitely a fade to black sort unless the ship is already so out there that I'm long past feeling self-conscious about it.

10- Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes. It's happened a couple of times, but the main one was someone who stole a few Austen fics from various people and tried to piece them together into something they could sell on Amazon. One of the fics was The Rich Are Always Respectable (not what I would choose to plagiarize if I were going to, but ... okay).

11- Have you ever had a fic translated?

Darcy/Elizabeth. Truly this ship is the terror of the seas!

14- What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?

Oh, man. This probably requires more self-knowledge than I really have. Um ... I hate saying it, but we get dark, only to shine is likely this. I had so many plans for where it was going to go, but I'm just in a very different fannish place these days.

15- What are your writing strengths?

It feels weird to say, but I think I write solid dialogue (it's certainly my favorite thing to write!) and fairly clean prose in general.

16- What are your writing weaknesses?

Description is my truest nemesis—I tend to place scenes in just empty or vaguely described space. Fight scenes and that sort of thing are really difficult (for related reasons). Finishing things—my stuff nearly always grows out of control and it screws up pacing and so on.

17- What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

A little goes a long way, IMO. I did a bit of it in my fic about Leia and Cassian and Alderaanian, in tongues and quiet sighs, so I can't judge it too hard, but it's very much something to handle with care (especially with conlangs—Tolkien fic can be pretty grating this way).

18- What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Tolkien! My first attempt at a fic was a Faramir-goes-to-Rivendell-instead-of-Boromir AU that never got very far.

Well, my first serious attempt at fanfic, that is—I wrote original stuff for years before that, and I guess technically I tried to write Trixie Belden fanfic when I was about 10 ... and the original stuff spun off from a piece that was basically a Secret of Mana fanfic I wrote even before the Trixie Belden stuff. But in terms of something written within a fandom community, the Faramir fic.

19- What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?

Hmm. I'm not sure, actually. I mostly just write stuff if I feel like it. Oh—it's cheating, but I've barely written Korra/Kuvira even though I adore the ship. I'd like to write a proper Korvira fic someday.

20- What's your favorite fic you've written?

This changes pretty often, though there are always a few that come up when I'm asked. At this moment in time, probably The Jedi and the Sith Lord, the third (sort of) of my f!Luke Skywalker fics, and the one where the story finally swerves off the canon tracks and becomes its own thing. Maybe (probably?) not my best work, but the Lucyverse is my baby and I think TJATSL is my best work in it.

So, I have this XIV AU where it's the real world slowly combining with the world of XIV, starting with anyone who plays XIV becoming their mains, including features modded in and not featured in game, and their belongings (clothes/IDs/etc) become best suited for their race; furniture, houses, and vehicles become best suited to all races, though, unless there is lore to one's main that such stuff would be custom made to accomodate them. Over time, the world slowly becomes more and more absorbed and subsequently transformed into the world of XIV, albeit more technologically advanced since XIV doesn't (at the time of writing) have anything within its lore akin to things like TVs and the internet, so what objects doesn't have a counterpart just kinda... Remain, albeit with recorded media mildly altered to have a more varied cast made up of the XIV races based on player and NPC statistics. All the while, people are trying to reverse things, if it is even possible. Over time, people will slowly get their in fame mounts, minions, gil, items, and such, including what was modded in and/or only included in said character's lore, so long as the items/gil/consumables aren't sold/used/traded off prior to receiving. did your buddy log into your account and fantasia you into the opposite gender as well as of a race you dislike and now you're stuck like that in the real world? Don't drink your fantasia until after you get a real world fantasia, as you won't change in the real world unless you drink your real world fantasia after the in game one was completely used.

A lot of the logistics as to how various races exist and interact with objects in a world like this mainly aren't too difficult, as Roegadyn, Hyur, and Elezen just live life as normal, aside from a potential difference in clothing size/skin tone/hair color/eye color/gender than they used to.

Viera and Miqo'te will need hats modified to accomodate their ears, and pants/shirts/dresses/kilts/and the like modified to accomodate their tails; I am a firm believer that Viera should have tails, by the way. Furniture and car seats will also need holes in the backs to accomodate said tails.

Hrothgar will need the same accommodations made to their clothes as the Viera and Miqo'te, plus some special shoes for their digitigrade paws for feet; I also headcanon that Hrothgar actually have paw feet, as I find anthro characters that don't have animal feet to be strange.

Au'Ra will need to have clothing toughened to withstand their tough scales and potential body spikes and scutes, as well as horn and tail accommodations in their clothing and helmets. Car seats will need to have tail holes with toughened liners, likely plastic, to prevent being worn out as fast from their tails.

Lalafells, though...? Aside from an increase in stools/step ladders available/owned and clothing sized to fit the small, more rotund physique that Lalafells have, the biggest issue is cars and other vehicles. Whatever happens in game with the XV car mount is not what will happen to a 'fell in a car, though, as real world cars have pedals that need to be reached in order to be driven, unless the car is modified to have stuff on the steering column or something; plus, standing on a car seat is dangerous. I will have to research on what to do about this, but will reblog with any updates.

I’ve seen other fanfic writers do an AO3 wrap up and tbh I’ve been kind of embarrassed to do one myself because I was only a productive writer from May to October which isn’t even half of the year (thanks to Jedi: survivor, bg3, and everything in my authors notes) but it was also my most productive year for writing fanfic that I wanted to do something so…

Ao3 statistics don’t easily separate by year for a multi chapter fic that I started back in 2021, but I can do a rough estimate of 2023 stats and then reflect on every fic that I’ve written this year. (Edit: by the time I finish writing this we will be a week into 2024 at least)

I have had so much support for my writing this year thanks to the amazing I Expect You To Die fandom and the IEYTD fandom discord in particular. To be honest, you guys really make it hard to be humble with how much love is showered over my fics and I am so grateful for every kudos, comment, and bookmark I’ve received since I started the Celebrity Crush series way back in 2021 when a certain actor lived in my head rent free.

Like I said before the statistics are rough estimates and I think that the best way to celebrate all I’ve done this past year is with words more than numbers and statistics.

The Spy and The Liar: The Movie

This is probably the best fic I’ve ever written! I am so proud of how it has grown beyond ten bullet points to be the 66k story it currently is with more to come. I’ve loved weaving foreshadowing and subtext into the story that I think most people have missed.

It’s also really hard to stay humble as this is the most love I’ve ever gotten on a fic and it has somehow seemingly become the Agent Phoenix/John Juniper fic on ao3. I’ve literally dropped all my other wips for other and bigger fandoms because of how much love and support it’s gotten. Especially because of the people in the fandom discord. Maybe it’s the instant appreciation but I had never been more motivated to write than when y’all shared your love for this fic and the Celebrity Crush series in general.

The Celebrity Crush series and ieytd was the first thing that got me back into writing after going through the most traumatic and violent loss and experience of my entire life back in 2020 (wasn’t even covid related lol). Literally an entire year had passed before I could write again. To know that this story has meant as much to you guys as he has to me has been the greatest gift that could ever been given to me.

The Spy and The Actor

This story wasn’t really supposed to be anything. The first (and only) chapter was written on a whim in one sitting based on a conversation in the fandom discord. Just the third time I’d be rewriting the ieytd 2 with an Agent Phoenix/John Juniper twist…

But then came the comments.

For those that don’t know, the point of the fic was that it was written and published by John Juniper but to come off as a fan thirsting for John instead of John thirsting for Phoenix. At its core it was me roleplaying as John Juniper. And the discord decided to roleplay in the comments as various characters from the games and of course I had to respond in character as John Juniper!

Even when I was a teen I thought roleplay was kinda cringe. But now? I get it, like I get it! I had so much fun roleplaying as John Juniper!!! I’m usually really nice so being able to just let go and be an absolute bitch. I’m so excited to work on the next chapter but I know it’ll have to be when I’ll have time to sit down and roleplay with everyone again.

Phoenix the Vampire Hunter

This was written for Calivide for beta reading a chapter in The Spy and The Liar: The Movie. This is the first fully alternate universe fic I’ve ever written and I absolutely adore the world I’ve created. It’s a sandbox that I’d love to play in more and I’d love for others to play in the sandbox too if they ever feel like it and write their own stories of the world. The ending I have planned leaves the world open for so many possible stories for myself or anyone to explore.

And I promise that I wrote vampire!Juniper before I ever played Baldur’s Gate III and fell in love with Astarion

God this got long but these fics mean so much more to me than simple statistics can tell and I hope people can see why I chose to elaborate on everything.

With 2024 signaling the 10th year of me writing and publishing fanfiction and with last year being so productive, I’m hoping to bring all of last years productivity into the new year as long as the video game industry stops releasing so many good games (I haven’t even gotten to spider-man 2 yet lol)

Originally I was going to add this to the ask @autistictenno recieved about nyx & excal but honestly it deserves it's own post. So here's a little history lesson on Warframe and Digital Extremes for y'all.

A lot of the early concepts for Warframe actually came from DE's older game, Dark Sector. I never played it myself but I've read a bit about it and have been around Warframe since it was in closed beta. Basically Dark Sector had a lot of sci-fi stuff planned for it that got cut and the final product was a bit like resident evil and the story followed Hayden Tenno who becomes mutated as a result of the 'technocyte virus' (cough cough Warframe infestation). The general plot involves him trying to stop a scientist from spreading the virus to the whole world. A lot of stuff about him influenced everyone's favorite frame Excalibur. The final boss of the game, Nemesis, also influenced some stuff about Nyx. This is hinted at with the proto deluxe skins you can buy for them in the Warframe market.

Here's some image comparisons between Dark Sector and the proto skins in Warframe. Some of the images come from the dark sector wiki (https://darksector.fandom.com/wiki/Special:AllPages) The others from this review (http://einfogames.com/reviews/dark-sector/) which was published in 2012, just after warframe was announced but before the closed beta for it started.

Even the iconic glaive got a proto skin (though it doesn't look that much different from the regular one in warframe)

Before Dark Sector DE mainly only did work-for-hire contracts and struggled getting a publisher for Dark Sector which is why a bunch of stuff got cut. The game only received moderate reviews and DE once again ended up doing work-for-hire contracts, and the studio almost became bankrupt before quickly scrambling to get Warframe out the door. They struggled getting a publisher for that too and ended up just doing a closed and then (endless) open beta for the game themselves, the only thing that kept them afloat was the founders program. After awhile, they got their lucky break and the game made it big. Like REALLY big. Like 4 million (losers) users big. Now it's up to 31.6 million registered accounts and an average of 601k players per day. (Statistics by https://mmo-population.com/r/warframe/)

DE and Warframe have been through so much and changed so much through the years. It went from this tiny little game I didn't think much of into one of my favorite games of all time with more breadth and depth (and lore!) than I would have ever expected. And even though updates still often come with a lot of bugs, I really couldn't be more proud of how far they've come all these years. Seeing Steve give Rebecca the pink shorts as a way of passing the torch really touched my heart in a way I don't even know how to describe.

Wow, two more women in a Hoyo game? I'm so surprised! Seriously though, Jade is the first Quantum unit that has a tall model (all Quantum units up until this point have been F med or F short). Of course this is assuming that Jade has an F tall model but, realistically, her proportions are that of most F tall models so I'd say it's a safe bet. We already know Firefly is an F med model. No love for the boys or the children this version.

I don't feel like repeating old info so I'll try to be quick: Quantum is all women while Imaginary is all men except for Yukong. We have not received a new F child unit since launch (happy one year HSR!).

OVERALL + OTHER THOUGHTS

Not much to say about this update in terms of statistics or units. I'm REALLY hoping we get Sunday by 2.4, but there's also a good chance 2.4 will take us to a previous location to give players a breather from Penacony, so we might need to wait a bit longer for Sunday 🫡

I'm also surprised that we didn't get Screwllum for 2.3 considering they mentioned updating the Simulated Universe in 2.3! Very unfortunate for Screwllum enjoyers.

After Penacony... maybe a Japanese-themed location? We've already got hints of one from both Sparkle and Acheron (although Acheron's home is probably unreachable now...)

Hamas’s Casualty Numbers Games

As Israeli troops batter Hamas and drive its surviving forces to the southern edge of the Gaza Strip, the Gaza Health Ministry has etched in the public mind a statistic that casts Israel’s war of self-defense as a bloodbath: 70% of the dead in Gaza are women and children, the Hamas-run ministry says, and more than 30,000 lives in total have been lost. Is it true?

President Biden, who pledged in October that Israel would never stand alone, has recently talked about “red lines” to prevent the Jewish state from eliminating Hamas’s final stronghold—because, as Mr. Biden put it, “they cannot have another 30,000 Palestinians dead.”

Mr. Biden isn’t alone in taking Hamas’s numbers at face value. The United Nations also relies on the Health Ministry’s data. The U.S. news media include the ministry’s latest numbers in its daily updates on the war. In October the Washington Post’s Adam Taylor vouched for Hamas, writing: “Many experts consider figures provided by the ministry reliable, given its access, sources and accuracy in past statements.”

Yet in a series of lengthy reports, the ministry admits that the figures the media treat as authoritative rely in part on reporting from . . . the media. The ministry says its casualty counts include two types of fatalities: those recorded by medical facilities and those reported by “reliable media sources.” In its March 31 report, the ministry attributes 15,070 of the dead, or 45.9%, to news reports. From which outlets? The ministry never says.

Its choices are limited, since Gaza has no independent media. It has networks like al-Aqsa that are extensions of Hamas and other armed factions. It has Al Jazeera, the Qatari state network that describes the atrocities of Oct. 7 as an “incursion” and denies that any “widespread and systematic” sexual assault took place. Western outlets report from Gaza, but they rely on the ministry for their casualty data.

Initially, the ministry’s data earned the confidence of foreign journalists because Gaza health officials had direct access to information from local medical facilities. Yet the ministry’s reports concede there has been an “interruption of communication” with many hospitals in the strip—meaning those from which Hamas withdrew amid the Israeli offensive. At present the ministry receives fresh data from only two facilities, both in southern Gaza.

While acknowledging the issues with its data, the ministry hasn’t made much effort to educate those who rely on its numbers. It distributes its statistical reports via Telegram, a social-media app, and only in Arabic. The ministry’s daily updates don’t disclose underlying issues with the data.

All the same, an enterprising correspondent with a willingness to question the dominant narrative could easily have found and translated the reports. Gabriel Epstein, an analyst at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, did this soon after the ministry published its first statistical report in December. He found that the deaths attributed to “reliable media sources” consisted almost entirely of women and children. Of the 6,629 fatalities attributed to media, 1,941 were women, 4,678 children and only 10 men.

Over time, media reports have accounted for an ever larger share of the ministry’s data. Of nearly 11,000 fatalities reported between Jan. 1 and March 31, the ministry derived 77.7% from media reports. Adult males account for only 9% of fatalities attributed to the news, even though Gaza’s sex ratio is close to even and more than half its residents are adults.

If one removes the questionable data from the ministry’s numbers, it becomes clearer that Israel has made considerable efforts to minimize the war’s effect on civilians, while Hamas continues to use hospitals as fortresses. Instead of drawing so-called red lines for a U.S. ally, as if it were a threat to American values and interests, Mr. Biden should encourage Israel to dispatch Hamas swiftly, since the terror group has brought nothing but misery to Gazans and Israelis alike.

Do you want a bigger fandom or do you like it, how it it’s right now ( I think you deserve more recognition because wicked and your other stories are so gooooooddddd )

Feels weird to refer to my readers as a fandom lol, truthfully I don’t think having more readers will fix the issue, I already have almost nine thousand followers, I’ve been on this app for probably five or six years now so naturally people have probably come and gone from my reading, some people only support certain fics etc. And I have no issues with this! Read what piques your interest on my blog and if it’s only one fic that’s totally fine!!

But overall I don’t really want more followers in this sense because I don’t think it’ll fix anything. An example is Wicked gets about seven hundred notes per chapter, about six hundred and twenty of those are likes and I’ll get maybe fifty reblogs and roughly ten to fifteen comments on the actual post (WHICH I just found out I’m now able to reply with THIS blog rather then my main account which is a total game changer with giving even more interaction with readers)

On a regular chapter though I could average about twenty to even thirty asks, mixed between users and anon’s, last chapter interaction had to be prompted; I only received two asks the whole day and a half and only after posting about the lack of engagement did I received an average amount of engagement.

This update for wicked has had a sharp drop off in likes at only close to four hundred, maybe thirty reblogs and probably 5 to 10 comments, however my asks were once again very dry, I only received two asks within the first three days of updating (it usually only takes 24 hours for asks to start rolling in).

Generally engagement will generate more engagement, that’s just how it works. But no engagement = no engagement 🤷‍♀️

I’m not trying to actively complain, I experienced this heavily with tease once i got close to chapter 20, so it’s not an unfamiliar concept to me. People want long fic’s but I’ve found that if it extends past fourteen to fifteen chapters, people begin to get bored and drop off, that’s what’s happened with wicked I suppose.

Anytime I feel discouraged I remember an old tumblr post that talks about imagining all the people who have read your fic being in a room with you, 400 people is overwhelming to imagine being in a room with me! But it doesn’t change that I sit here a lot of days and think about the people who only drop a like.

It’s like saying; your fic is really good, it made me feel all the feelings, I loved to consume it and I’m now onto the next. It’s good!!! but it’s not that good; it’s good but it’s not good enough for me to click twice to reblog it; it’s good; but it’s not good enough for me to bother writing you an ask or dropping a comment, it’s good; you want engagement? okay I’ll just write ‘part 2???’ or how about ‘update pls!!’

I’m not really talking about anything new, this has been an ongoing issue in writing for an unfortunately very long time; even my biggest fic Sate just hit 5 thousand notes! I had enough engagement with the fic that I considered it a personal success but when you look at the statistics of it, it’s kinda messed up that it had to take five thousand people just for six hundred to reblog it and only twenty three people to drop a comment.

Anyways I didn’t mean to ramble about this, I guess it’s just been on my mind as I wonder about what direction I take this blog and if I want to keep writing, to answer your question; I don’t really put much stock into my following because it evidently doesn’t really count towards what I write, I’ll always be flattered when people chose to support by following but it’s not a number I put a lot of value in

I'd like to know more about mods? What are some of the things they do? How common are they? How did the practice start? Is there any taboo associated with them?

Happy WBW! Mods are incredibly versatile and can be used for all kinds of things. Some of the most common include increased processing speed, personal embedded cameras, heightening of various senses, and connectors for plugging into screens and doing work faster.

There are also "pop mods," which include fun things like little screens that change colors or images based on mood, embedded makeup and tattoos that move or flash, ones that allow you to plug in nutrient packs instead of remembering to eat, that let you see normally underwater, see in infrared, browse the future-internet inside your head, etc.

For practical mods to improve work performance, or even to improve sensory input, they've been around a while so they're normalized across groups of people and no one except maybe a small anti-tech faction (which I'm sure exists but isn't directly related to the story I'm telling). For pop mods, some older or more traditional people might disapprove because of the lack of necessity and the flashiness, but in the mainstream culture they're not any weirder than wearing a sequined skirt or crop top might be now.

These mods are regulated by an agency similar to the FDA. The agency was set up due to safety concerns, to be sure that mods are properly tested. This also means that if there are concerns that come up later they're able to contact people, replace or remove mods, send updates, etc. But this had a not-entirely-unintended secondary consequence. The mods are sold at apple-style stores by a handful of large corporations, who by this point have full and inherent rights to all collected data, which in the case of mods can mean videos of peoples' lives, complete browsing histories, bio-data, location data, and more. The government also has access to this data, the only restriction being that they have to ask after a specific person of interest instead of just browsing the data.

There are plenty of people who hate this system, and thus a thriving black market has been running for a long time. Some of them run out of tattoo-style shops, very professional and set up either through bribing officials or in carefully selected areas where they're the least of enforcement's concern. Others work on the street or by appointment by word of mouth. They offer all the same types of mods as the official ones, but there are also options that haven't been approved by the agency, including everything from universal-plugins (allowing one to basically hack any unprotected tech) to growing plants out of your skin to various mental games to pushing processing speeds and other work-improving functions beyond approved limits. Statistically, most of these are safe and in good faith, HOWEVER some are glitchy, only some modders will do later maintenance, and some are malicious and will load malware onto their tech to steal data, spy, or cause purposeful glitches.

And yes, I definitely just made 80% of that up but it has helped me work out how the modding system works, so thank you so much!
