Rhaelle Baratheon neé Targaryen
Tumblr media
The youngest child of Aegon V and Betha Blackwood, she was married to Lord Ormund Baratheon. When all four of her elder siblings broke their betrothals to the great houses, the Baratheons were amongst those spited. After a short rebellion and a trial by combat, she was betrothed to Ormund and sent to Storms end to act as cupbearer to Lord Lyonel. She married Ormund and had her son Steffon a year later. She’s marriage to House Baratheon helped lead to the downfall of House Targaryen as her grandson Robert Baratheon used his relation to her as his claim to the Iron Throne after he rebelled against and nearly decimated House Targaryen. I like to think that she was still alive in the current timeline.
Sneak peek of what’s next: Rhaenys Targaryen daughter of Rhaegar

I hope Ormund was a good and loving husband to Rhaelle because otherwise she grew up hearing of how her parents married for love, and watched her siblings also pursue their own loves (which directly resulted in Rhaelle getting engaged to Ormund) only to end up without it herself

Who Do You Prefer as Rhaenyra's Prince Consort? (Or who's the most useful?)
When you're chosen as heir to the throne over your half-siblings, you need allies to help you with your claim and be smart.
One of the things you need to be smart about is the choice of consort. The things you need for a useful spouse is…
1.) From a significant house
2.) Has a good Reputation
3.) Tolerable (like doesn't mind Rhaenyra being the heir. For a marriage to work you need a good-working relationship)
4.) Competent
5.) The ability to give Trueborn heirs *in Laenor's case they both can try, but if unsuccessful Rhaenyra needs to find someone that looks similar to Laenor to give her kids so she can pass them off as Laenors
Who Do You Prefer As Rhaenyra's Prince Consort and for what reason?
Laenor Velaryon
Daemon Targaryen
Qoren Martell
Jason Lannister

Daeron Targaryen was the third son of King Viserys and the youngest of his siblings; yet despite how his grandsire instilled the thought that his sole purpose would be to create alliances, he seemed more of an afterthought, with the way he was sent away to Oldtown. There he remained isolated, just a squire in Lord Ormund’s shadow until word arrived that his father was dead and it was his brother who now sat on the Iron Throne.
This ignited the dragon’s blood that burned in his veins as he returned at once aback Tessarion. He landed at the peak of Rhaenys’ Hill, the dragonkeepers rushing to assist the blue scaled dragon, alerting his grandsire of his arrival. Daeron was greeted at the barbican of the Red Keep, his mother wrapped her arms around his shoulders while his grandsire feigned the excitement of the news that his brother had just returned from Storm’s End after securing a betrothal for him to one of the Four Storms.
He prepared himself for the namesake, but instead found himself enamored with the arrival of Lady Baratheon.
She was beautiful, in the least, with a presence that soothed whatever room she entered, with grace to her every movement and a voice that was the soft trill of musical chimes. Lady Baratheon was the physical embodiment of a princess-to-be, but in the moments they were allowed alone, the few before the wedding, she showed him her tactful wit and sound mind, their conversation at ease between them.
The whispers of the Red Keep fluttered about the rushed engagement, how the poor Lady Baratheon could not be afforded even the second son, but that she had to wed the third. Though he flushed with the rumors, oddly enough, she appeared to be just as intrigued with Daeron as he was with her. With the allotted time allowed together, her questions seemed genuine and she was rapt to his attention with his reply; as they were escorted back to their respective rooms, he felt himself both fortunate and flustered by her.
A week after her arrival, it was decided to have an intimate ceremony in the Royal Sept, with only a family meal afterwards to allow them all to become better acquainted. Daeron kept his large hands folded in front to keep from fidgeting, a shyness that accompanied the lady when she came up to his side, though the soft touch of her hands to his own settled him. The Septon was monotonous and they echoed the vows, his low timbre with her melodious lilt.
They were escorted to the small hall that glowed golden with the candle light, decorated tastefully and the table laden with a feast while the minstrels played low, but jovial, melodies while they ate.
It was almost unnerving to be back within this very room, his last memory almost a decade prior where he saw his father sitting center and his mother perched at his side. Now, his mother sat at one end while his brother, King Aegon, who proudly wore the Conqueror’s Crown since it had been placed on top of his head, was seated center with his sister-wife at his side. They were picturesque, he was regal and Helaena now seemed to exude a queenly aura that complemented her serenity.
Aemond sat at the end, his severity etched into the sharp contours of his face and his jeweled eye gleamed in his scarred socket–Daeron only learning the day he returned that his eye had been taken. He glowered with the authority from the title bestowed by the king, Protector of the Realm, which seemed to be a cover-up from the debt of his eye repaid in blood.
Daeron was seated by his new lady wife, who spoke with her musical diction that engaged the attention of his family, and he sat silent at her side, the always-forgotten Targaryen prince.
In so many ways, his family had changed and grown into themselves, but some habits remained, including Aegon’s love of Dornish wine. Daeron watched his red stained lips utter a crude comment about a crude custom abolished two kings prior–his right to the first night.
There was the thought of how Targaryens were closer to gods than men and Daeron now felt the thrum of ichor curl with the fire in his veins.
But Aemond acted first, grabbing Aegon by the scruff of his regal fabric and dragging him from the table. He saw the tears that pearled in his mother’s eyes, her regret threatening to spill, and how his sweet sister excused herself to disappear in the shadows of the Red Keep.
Daeron stood, offering his arm to his lady wife.
It was a white fury that clouded his vision, the combination of his embarrassment, the rumors that trickled within the castle walls and the blatant disrespect shown at the dinner table. He wished to speak to her, to apologize, to take action, but instead his tongue remained swollen in his mouth, choking him.
His automatic steps halted when the white knight broke his trance, “My prince, this way.”
Oh. The realization they were being escorted to the marital room prepared and he now found himself truly alone with his wife, the lovely Lady Baratheon.
It was the same warm, golden hue from the candles light and that poured from the ornate hearth lit and waiting for their arrival. They both remained standing and then she moved towards the small tablet, pouring a fresh goblet and bringing it to Daeron, which he accepted numbly.
He took a sip to wet his throat. “My lady, I want to apologize,” he began, setting down the goblet and turning to face her.
“What for?”
His tongue wet his lips as he looked to her, watching her slow, serene movements as she sat down the picture and moved towards him, one step in front of the other, her brow both knitted and elegant above her scrutinous stare. “You did nothing wrong, my prince,” she continued.
He felt his cheeks warm within her proximity. “Daeron,” he placed his hand to his chest, “I wish you to call me Daeron.”
He felt his cock twitch against the crotch of his trousers from the demure way her eyes lifted, how they watched him under her long, dark lashes, how her perfectly pink lips curled. “Yes, Daeron,” she tested his name and it was sweet like honey on her tongue. “You have nothing to apologize for, nothing has changed what happened tonight.”
He blinked, empty, almost dumb until she sweetly reminded him, “I am your lady wife now,” and her smile brightened as Daeron grew rosier with her words. “I am yours, Daeron.”
She closed what little space had remained between them, her small palm resting on top of his large hand stilling resting on his chest. Daeron felt his throat hitch from her sweet scent of lavender that curled into his chest and beckoned him to her. He tilted his head, his silver tresses spilling forward, until the tip of his nose gently touched her own.
And he kissed her.

i think there’s a really easy workaround for dany’s infertility and it’s that she should just do what i did in my silly female line post and pick the houses that have a female line claim and reach out to them. i think it shows very clearly that she’s not thinking about the good of westeros but only of her claim to westeros because while she thinks frequently of her infertility she doesn’t ever think about what the hell happens because of it.
and i hate the “dany’s infertility is a metaphor for her not thinking of the future” bc it’s ableist as all hell but it’s exactly the sort of thing that would appeal to george and i think it’s correct (same way the “bran the broken” nonsense is ableist but unfortunately correct foreshadowing). she could easily work around it by naming an heir through the female targ line!
a) it gets her allies in westeros and for all that she’s constantly thinking about going home she doesn’t try to reach out to any of the lords at all. her whole focus is on an army, not on making connections.
b) it might make her female line claim more palatable to the lords, if she can get a few on her side bc they have a similar (albeit way more distant) female line claim as well that might get their house on the iron throne
c) she can also make the argument that robert is doing the exact same shit bc the maesters used his grandmother rhaella targaryen’s marriage to ormund baratheon as proof of why he gets the iron throne. if he can claim female line inheritance, surely she can get fancy with it as well?
but none of this ever occurs to her. she doesn’t even show an interest in learning about westeros once she has power. when she meets barristan she doesn’t wonder at all about why he’s hesitant to talk of her family. she doesn’t ask jorah for more information on why aerys & rhaegar were overthrown. she knows viserys was delusional yet doesn’t ever attempt to unlearn anything he taught her. the smallfolk praying for viserys’ return is silly but for her it makes sense because she’s the mother of dragons - except the last time dragons existed in Westeros the smallfolk slaughtered them because they were constantly used to subjugate and terrorize people! why would they want her dragons back? why would they see her any differently than meleys blackfyre, a foreign invader with a foreign army threatening to upend their way of life?? her thoughts of westeros center on finding the red door and the lemon tree. it’s all about what westeros can do for her, that westeros can love her and give her a home, but she never thinks about how to make them love her! she just assumes it’s a given and it’s why i think she’s going to fail.

Rhaegar looked a good potential ruler only in comparison to Aerys lmao. He would have been terrible, from an objective pov. I mean he managed to piss off THREE major houses at once. That is quite the achievement.
Like, he only looks good when you look at his father, grandfather and great grandfather. Aerys II was, well, I think there's little need for any elaboration on that. A man who enjoyed cruelty to the degree that when he begun to turn mentally unstable, the voices in his head had only made that cruelty turn up to the degree war was going to be inevitable one day no matter what.
Jaehaerys II was also not a good King and had a very short reign. He ruined the very carefully balanced status of Westeros created by his father in order to have an incestuous marriage with his sister. He did the most damage to the last reign of the Targaryeans by creating only ONE direct bloodline by marrying his sister and then ordering the marriage of his son and daughter together. His only good contribution in his short time as King was delegating the Ninepenny Kings War to the command of Ormund Baratheon, but he only did it because Ormund was the one who talked him down from fighting in the war himself, so it wasn't even his own idea.
Aegon V should have been remembered as a good King, but he failed his own family by creating circumstances which allowed Jaehaerys II the opportunity to both marry his sister and marry his own children together, thus dooming the bloodline of his own family. He also ruins his final memories with his actions at Summerhall. Summerhall is the one event which ruins Aegons ability to be remembered as a good ruler because his downfall was still his own obsession with his house's superiority with dragons.
In contrast to all that, sure, maybe Rhaegar wouldn't be the worst King but he wouldn't have been a good one. He too by Roberts Rebellion was delusional and obsessed with prophecy to the degree no one around him understood why he was doing the things he did. His actions led to a massive war that overthrew his own family and left three members of the Stark family dead which haunts over the narrative the entire main series.
Meaning if Rhaegar did not realize the ramifications of kidnapping the firstborn daughter of a major house who was betrothed to the firstborn son of another major house, all the while insulting another major house whom had married INTO his family via his own wife, meaning he was just an idiot. Or he knew the ramifications but was so obsessed with the prophecy he did not care, which means he was utterly delusional.
The whole point of the downfall of House Targaryean is that it was inevitable. In their own ways not even the best remembered Kings were good people. None of them really were because the Targaryeans are the wrong fit of people to live amongst Westeros, let alone rule it.
Rhaegar nor Viserys nor Daenerys would have been good rulers.

THE THREE WIDOWS Artwork by Tomasz Jedruszek
The first of these was Johanna Lannister, the widowed Lady of Casterly Rock, who with her father, Lord Roland Westerling, now ruled the westerlands. Lord Corlys’s ravens, offering pardons and terms, had flown widely before Lord Cregan arrived, and Lady Johanna had responded by accepting all those terms, asking only that the Iron Throne command Lord Greyjoy to abandon his reaving of her lands, returning Fair Isle to its rightful lords and freeing all the noble women that had been taken as salt wives. She also swore to turn over the portion of the royal treasury that had been dispatched to Casterly Rock at the outset of the war, though required that Ser Tyland Lannister be pardoned as well.
The second widow was Lady Elenda, wife of the late Lord Borros Baratheon. She now ruled in the name of her infant son, Royce, who had been born six days after his father’s death at the Battle of the Kingsroad. She was quick to pledge the fealty of Storm’s End, offering up three of her daughters to serve as hostages. Escorted by Ser Willis Fell of the Kingsguard, the girls would be accompanied to King’s Landing by Princess Jaehaera.
The last widow was the beautiful, fiery Lady Samantha Hightower, widow of Lord Ormund Hightower and the daughter of Lord Donald Tarly and Lady Jeyne Rowan, whose own families had risen in support of Rhaenyra. She had been his second wife and was of an age with Lord Ormund’s children. The death of her husband at the second Battle of Tumbleton could have left her in a precarious position, but the new lord—the fifteen-year-old Lyonel—was smitten with his own stepmother, who was only two years his senior.

The escoffion idea was so cool that I can see it spreading to the Baratheons too, because they also want to resemble stag's horns! so they adopted the escoffions but the ones they wore instead of going up and being reticulated were bigger to the sides like those on the effigy of the Countess of Arundel, although I can't see this fashion lasting very long with the terrible winds of the Stormlands 💀 but I bet some Baratheon went to the Vale wearing it and the Vale girls ATE UP this style too 😭😭😭

Why do we refer to Alicent as a Hightower? Once she's married, didn't she become a Targaryen? Shouldn't she be called Alicent Targaryen ?
Okay so this is the consequence of the fact that none of the nobility or royalty in Westeros have actual last names the way that we understand them. Colloquially, nobles and royalty are often referred to as [first name] + [House name] (Alicent Hightower, Rhaenyra Targaryen, etc.) which makes it seem like the House names are last names. But they’re not actually, they’re titles. Kind of like how none of the British royal family have last names, just first names. And titles behave a bit differently from legal last names. Married women have equal claim to the House they were born into and the House they married into, and so can refer to themselves as either or. And they certainly don't seem to HAVE to give up their maiden name, no matter who they marry.
It’s entirely possible for people to claim multiple Houses in formal occasions. For example, Tommen Baratheon is referred to as “Tommen of Houses Baratheon and Lannister” during his coronation. But colloquially people only use one at a time. Married women usually have a preference for one or the other. There are examples galore of both options here. Olenna Tyrell and Lisa Arryn always go by their married names; Sansa Stark, Rhaenys Targaryen, and Cersei Lannister all go by their maiden names. Some women might use the two interchangeably, depending on their circumstances: Catelyn might refer to herself as Catelyn Tully while in the Riverlands, but Catelyn Stark while in the North.
Whether the married or maiden name is used comes down to a variety of factors, such as the statuses of the two Houses, the women’s sentiments towards the two Houses, and how deeply the women assimilate into the culture/family of their married House. When a woman is colloquially referred to by her maiden name, it is usually meant to reflect that she is perceived as rejecting the family she married into in favor of her original family. Alicent holds more closely to things associated with the Hightowers, such as the Faith of the Seven, and is largely derided by Team Black for being an “outsider” within House Targaryen. But this is only the case for informal labels.
Now, this flexibility does not extend to the formal titles of these women. When using their formal titles, they must use their married name. This is because there is only one “Lady X” at any given time, and it is a title reserved for the wife of the corresponding “Lord X.” This is true for men as well, by the way: Laenor was never “Lord Velaryon” because Corlys was “Lord Velaryon,” and only one person can hold the title at a time. So for example, Alicent wouldn’t be called “Lady Hightower,” even if she wasn’t married to a King, because the only Lady Hightower is the wife of Lord Ormund Hightower (who is also the only Lord Hightower). This is also why Rhaenys Targaryen is referred to as Lady Velaryon and never as Lady Targaryen.
As for Alicent, she's a bit unique because she married into the royal family in particular. Since royalty needs to feel important, they get their own rules that are a bit different from the rest of the nobility. The only ones with a claim to the name Targaryen are those born to a man with that name. The title of Queen is never attached to a specific House. Alicent’s formal title isn’t “Queen Targaryen,” nor is it “Queen Hightower,” it is simply “Queen Alicent.” But even if she'd married a Lord, she could very well still be known by the name Hightower.

The Dornish War AU
So... @arraxapologist gave me an excuse to ramble and @idontevenknowhowtolife said I can have a chapter update if I write this up.
I may not get around to actually writing this AU, but I have a lot planned. The Polycule of Power would probably feature to some degree or another if I did it properly, but my notes are all on the canon ships (at least for the older gen, Aegon ends that trend real quick).
It would start, as so many good AUs do, with someone trying to kill Viserys. ^^'
At Rhaenyra and Laenor's wedding tourney, the festivities get interrupted by an attempted assassination of the king. So yay! Joffrey lives! ...for now. Bing, bang, boom, rushed nuptials done, we move to the war bit.
They track the attempt back to Dorne, which is a bit salty about the Stepstones even though they were not * directly* involved in the conflict. Various threats are levied. Political drama. Etc!
War declared!
Now, Lyonel Strong is Hand at this point and Otto is off in Oldtown advising his nephew who just became Lord Hightower. That may relate directly to the breakdown in diplomatic relations... 😏
Essentially, Otto is in charge of the Hightower forces at this point. He and his older sons are literally the ones on the front lines in that region. He and Boremund Baratheon, who is still alive at this point, are coordinating all the ground forces. Borros gets to live his best life smashing heads a la his descendent Robert.
Meanwhile, Corlys is using his foothold in the Stepstones to establish a blockade of Dorne. A rather major escalation that pisses the Martells off Whether they were involved in the assassination is very much up in the air, but they're gonna act like they're innocent regardless cause they're not idiots.
Rhaenyra is playing her best Visenya and arguing that they either need to conquer Dorne once and for all, or let the matter go. Alicent is lowkey telling Viserys the same thing, but with more emotion cause she just found out she's pregnant again (Yay Aemond!). She and Rhaenyra are in a very rocky truce situation here. Very stand-offish, but accidentally united.
The accidentally is very important because while Alicent is fretting about her children being in danger, Rhaenyra is leveraging the fact that her father has other heirs now to convince him to send her and Laenor to the front.
"I'm to be their queen. Their protector. If I cannot protect my own family, I don't deserve the crown."
Somewhere, Daemon's spidey sense is going off the moment Laenor hands Rhaenyra a sword. Viserys sees her training with her husband and agrees, giving her final say over all troop movements on the front lines. Rhaenys goes to Storm's End. Daemon to Oldtown. Laenor to Hightower. The idea is that Rhaenyra would go back and forth between the three, checking in with ground forces and coordinating with the Lords of each.
Are any of them actually in those castles? Eh. Sometimes. The dragonriders are supporting the armies, scouting far and wide, burning the border, etc. Rhaenyra probably spends as much time coordinating with Ormund Hightower as she does keeping Otto and Daemon from killing each other.
This is the era in which Otto realizes Rhaenyra could actually be a fantastic queen. With some help... of course. He's still Otto after all. XD
During one of the battles (probably the future location of Summerhall, because I can), Joffrey is killed. Rhaenyra spends the night comforting Laenor. Things happen... and now she's flying back and forth across the frontlines while pregnant.
Alicent goes into labor when she hears about that... cause Aemond is born early in every universe.
The war continues. Rhaenyra burns the fuck out of Yronwood before she ends up giving birth in one of the camps. Syrax's roars are terrifying both sides. Especially because they are joined by another dragon...
😎 Laena and Vhagar were not about to sit out a chance to conquer Dorne okay? She was flying with the Velaryon fleet mostly, very effective deterent Vhagar. With Rhaenyra giving birth, she flies across the Sea of Dorne to lend her support.
Yronwood is having an exceptionally bad few days there. Something, something, Laena and Daemon hit it off while waring and whoring. She drops some hints about her betrothal... Daemon dones his murder hoodie. Sealord's son is out of the picture. Rhaenys and Laenor have a shovel talk with Daemon while Rhaenyra presents Lord Corlys with his first grandson.
Lord Boremund totally cackles about the boy looking more like Jocelyn and Rhaenys than Laenor or Corlys. Otto says something about Jacaerys looking more like his mother.
"The Arryns will surely be overjoyed to see their blood so prominent in the young prince's features."
The Dornish are wiley though. (I love this about them) They're not making this war easy, even with the dragons. After all, the OG Conquerors had dragons too, and they couldn't make the Dornish submit. The commanders fight more without Rhaenyra there to keep them united (*cough* Daemon and Otto *cough*) so she has to leave Jacaerys with Alicent (who is now pregnant again... Rhaenyra is definitely side eyeing her father on that one).
If the Dornish thought Rhaenyra was bad before... she's got a very adorable baby she wants to get back to now. It's full court press. The dragons are relentless. Vhagar is having the time of her life.
Eventually, an offer comes from the Prince of Dorne to have his eldest daughter marry Jacaerys as a means to end the war. Given the girl is the man's heir and Jacaerys is hers... Rhaenyra is not so keen to have the girl lose out on her inheritance. She negotiates for Aegon instead, with the girl being fostered in King's Landing until their wedding.
The night the peace treaty is signed, Lucerys is conceived. He'll end up betrothed to a granddaughter of the Lord of Yronwood before his first birthday, to cement the treaty. (Aegon and Luke are the Daenaerys and Daeron II in this AU... for reasons).
Rhaenyra returns to King's Landing and conspires with Alicent for Jace and Helaena to be betrothed eventually. Daeron still fosters as Oldtown, but he ends up betrothed to a Manderly girl. When Joffrey comes along (the result of a night Laenor blames on Qarl and Rhaenyra blames Harwin for) he goes to the Vale, because Lady Arryn needs an heir... and he is Aemma's grandson...
Something, something Baela and Aemond are utter terrors together. No one is shocked when they run off to Essos together. Except Daemon... Daemon is surprised. Daemon is not happy. Corlys and Otto are laughing at him together over a bottle of Velaryon whiskey in High Tide.
That leads to Rhaena marrying Lyonel.
The Starks have 100% noticed that the Targaryens are marrying into the most influential families and are keeping their heads down cause Cregan is a young lord. His uncle would like to remain his regent. Jace and Cregan will join their houses later though so its fine.
On the other hand... the Lannisters are frothing at the mouth about being left out. Well... Rhaenyra is still salty about *someone* implying Aegon should be heir. So when she finally has a daughter, right before her coronation at that, she ain't looking at Casterly Rock.
Her Visenya obviously deserves to be forever doted upon and surrounded by beauty, so she ends up the next Lady of Highgarden.
I've gotten distracted from the plot here a bit... but whatever. The Dance is avoided. Rhaenyra ends up queen and Aegon is living his best life getting drunk off Dornish wine with his Dornish wife. Sunfyre blends in perfectly with the desert sand when he naps in the summer.
All is well.
Jaehaera is Jacaerys' heir, because I said so.
Good night! XD
