What We Know About P5X

(updated 1/23/24)

Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X) has now had three beta tests, the first of which ran from March 29th to 31st 2023, the second of which ran from August 18th to 25th 2023, and the third of which is running from January 16th to 31st 2024. Here’s a summary of what we know about the game itself so far. Hopefully this’ll be useful, whether you're new around here or not!

I also have updated posts about the game's story and playable characters so far, which can be found in this blog's pinned post (along with this post!) once they're all done.

Keeping this as succinct as I can, but it's still a little long, so under the cut it goes.

Overview

P5X is a turn-based RPG mobile game with gacha elements, developed by Black Wings Game Studio and published by Perfect World Games. While not directly creating it, it is officially licensed by Atlus and Sega. Atlus has apparently been very involved in its production, including Shigenori Soejima designing the protagonist and his Persona.

The game's setting has been confirmed to be an alternate/"parallel" world to Persona 5's, though translated promotional information also confirms the plot has something to do with these two worlds interacting through "time and space".

As Perfect World Games and Black Wings Game Studio are Chinese game companies, P5X is produced in Chinese, with no current official English translations, though the third beta had files that possibly indicate future plans to translate the game into English, Spanish, and Japanese, among other languages. The dialogue in-game is voiced in both Japanese and Chinese, with Japanese and Chinese voice actors for the characters.

There are specifically two main gachas in the game- a character gacha for gaining teammates, and a weapons gacha for gaining better weapons for those teammates.

Right now, we know the game will release on both mobile and PC, but it’s unconfirmed whether it will release anywhere outside of China, Taiwan, Macao, Hong Kong, and Korea, and we don’t yet have a release date for even the Chinese version of the full game. All three of the beta tests so far have been closed betas available only in China, Taiwan, Macao, and Hong Kong, where players could sign up for a chance to get in, and actual beta accounts were given out via lottery.

The Characters

So far, there are 16 new Persona users. These characters can be divided into story teammates and "Phantom Idol" (gacha-only) teammates.

The story teammates so far are the protagonist (codename Wonder), an owl named Ruferu in Japanese which has sometimes been translated as "Luffy" by fans (codename Cattle), an athletic classmate of the protagonist's named Motoha Arai (codename Closer), and a boy from another class with an interest in cooking named Shun Kanou (codename Soy). These teammates have all joined as part of the plot of the game.

The "Phantom Idol" teammates ("Kaidoru" in Japanese) are described as being cognitive beings created by Wonder's Velvet Room attendant, Merope, to assist him in the Metaverse, and seem to be based on people Wonder meets, though they are only copies. So far, they include Motoha's friend Tomoko Noge (codename Moko), first year student Kiyoshi Kurotani (codename Key), Wonder's family friend Kayo Tomiyama (codename Okyann), college freshman from China Yaoling Li (codename Rin), an aspiring acting student whose real name may be Reo Kamiyama (codename Leon), a student from Kosei High named Yukimi Fujikawa (codename Yuki), rich high school student Seiji Shiratori (codename Fleuret), a former ice skater whose real name may be Kotone Montagne (codename Mont), an online friend of Wonder's who goes by the name Yui (codename Bui), a children's fashion model whose real name may be Hina Nishimori (codename Riddle), an unemployed fisherman whose real name may be Toshiya Sumi (codename Sepia), and the runaway daughter of a local politician whose real name may be Miyu Sawara (codename Puppet).

The original Phantom Thieves from Persona 5 also appear as Phantom Idols: Joker, Mona, Skull, Panther, Fox, Queen, Oracle, Noir, and Crow. Datamining also found some of Wolf’s battle voice lines from P5S at least in the first beta, and an icon from P5S with Sophie in all three betas, suggesting they may later be added as well. No sign of Violet has been found yet, other than the Faith Arcana card in the files. Joker, at the very least, seems to have some larger role in the plot, as Wonder has a dream about them fighting at the start of the third beta, and later what seems to be a Phantom Idol Joker comes out of nowhere to rescue Wonder and Cattle in Mementos.

Munehisa Iwai, Tae Takemi, and Chihaya Mifune also return in P5X. Iwai runs the weapon gacha, Takemi sells medicine like in P5, and Chihaya tells fortunes. The other original P5 confidants’ portraits and 3D models have been found in all three betas' data, and the Councillor Arcana card was with the other cards in the second and third betas' data specifically, but it’s currently unknown whether they’ll actually return in any capacity.

Music

Several new songs have been heard in P5X, four of which feature vocals by Lyn: "Last Strike", "Wake Up Your Hero", "Shadow", and "Fatal Desire". The new instrumental tracks so far include background music for the first two Palaces, background music for special fights, a new music track for Mementos, and some music for P5X's rhythm minigame, where Wonder plays music with fellow students.

Locations

The majority of P5 and P5R’s locations have been confirmed for P5X, including Yongen-Jaya, Kichijoji, Shibuya, and Shinjuku, but the protagonist lives in a new location called Zoshigaya, and goes to a new school called Kokatsu Academy. Another school named Kiga High School has also been mentioned.

(Note that while Yongen-Jaya exists, Leblanc has been replaced with a generic coffee shop, which is eventually purchased and run by someone other than Sojiro Sakura. Similarly, the Big Bang Burger in Shibuya is now just called Big Burger, with no apparent traces of the space theming, and the Crossroads bar in Shinjuku has also been rebranded.)

Mementos and the concept of Palaces also return in P5X, though there are some differences. At least in the betas, Mementos operates as a sort of hub, with characters entering Palaces through Mementos, from the entrance to each Palace located within the massive floors of Mementos. Mementos also has special battle locations apparently similar to “domains” in other gacha games, where completing the fight gives special items to strengthen characters and weapons, themed after P5′s Palaces (so far Kamoshida, Madarame, Kaneshiro, and Okumura's Palace-themed "domains" have been found).

Basic Game Mechanics

For the most part, P5X operates extremely similarly to P5, both in and out of the Metaverse. One notable difference is that the calendar isn't progressed by anything but the story- other activities, such as working, crafting infiltration tools, and spending time with Confidants, instead cost hourglasses to do, without being restricted to a single afternoon and nighttime time slot each day, as was the case in P5.

One interesting and more significant change made in this category is that the Confidants have what appears to be a total of 20 ranks, instead of the series-standard 10. They also haven't been associated with any Arcana, though the P5R Arcana cards have all been found in the second beta's data.

The UI elements of combat look a little different (as well as all the skill animations), appearing to be more optimized for mobile play, but otherwise it seems largely the same to P5, though one notable difference is that it seems Navigator skills can be called in at will (and then have a cooldown), rather than occurring randomly. There is a new kind of special attack called a Highlight Attack, which is similar to P5S’s Showtime attacks where the character executes a special attack with their Persona.

The protagonist can gain Personas by talking to shadows, and fuse them in the Velvet Room. Challenge battles in the Velvet Room, like in P5R, are available to attempt. Palace exploration also seems relatively standard, even if the Palace itself and the method of entering it is different. One major change is that several shadow/Persona designs have been censored; this includes Incubus and many others being given shorts, Bugs' stomach being repaired with the blood removed, Mara being given a large hat, Hell Biker and other skeletal Personas having a helmet/mask that obscures the skull, and several female Personas like Lamia being given shirts. However, these changes are purely cosmetic.

Miscellaneous

It’s worth noting that because the game has yet to be officially translated to English in any capacity (outside of a single file confirming its English title as "Persona 5: The Phantom X"), character names can only be absolutely confirmed when they’re either written in Japanese kana (as opposed to the Japanese kanji characters names are typically written in) or spoken aloud in official material, to confirm which reading of the Japanese name is the intended one for this specific character.

The characters do also have Chinese names, of course, but as the voice acting defaults to Japanese, and the game is set in Japan, the names that would most likely be used by an English release (if it ever happens) are their Japanese ones. As such, the Japanese names are the ones presented in the Characters section earlier in this post, and the main ones that this blog uses.

All the codenames, however, are written in English, and thus the most easily confirmed as official.

And just to close this out, keep in mind that the majority of our information about the game contents specifically comes from the beta versions, so things can and have changed between beta playtests, and similarly may change in the actual release of the game.

The Ghost In The Attic

Investigator: Atticus Bishop

Client(s) Name: John & Abigail Swanson

Address: 325 Wallaby Way, South Dakota, USA

Complaint: Loud noises in the attic at night, things moved around from one side of the room to the other, voices, the occasional smell of perfume.

Account: I met with Mr & Mrs Swanson on April 18th, 2018. They'd called me on April 12th, stating that they believed a spirit to be in the attic. They'd taken the time to leave animal traps upstairs, only for them to remain empty and untriggered. Originally, the Swanson family thought that it was a raccoon or possibly even several of them living in the attic. However, there has been evidence gathered since that does not coberate this hypothesis.

Evidence includes, but is not limited to:

-Voice recordings

-Photographs

-Ouija Sessions

Day #1 of Investigation

Upon arriving, the Swanson couple showed me to the place of investigation. An attic, filled with clothing and small pieces of furniture for storing. First glance, almost nothing out of ordinary, except for a small collection of small clown dolls in a glass-covered display case.

"They were all gifts from a creepy uncle on my side," interjected Mrs. Swanson.

"He'd been giving them to us since we got married in the 1990s, and he recently passed," Mr. Swanson chimed in.

Such volunteering of information almost made it seem like they suspected him of being their lively haiunt. I asked them when exactly this activity started and if it had gotten worse over time. As it turns out, the activity had always been there, and indeed has gotten worse since the uncle's passing. A two-in-one haunting perhaps?

Further research into the estate is needed. Thus far, I have collected two EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) sessions, several photos taken via digital camera, and I have also collected video via pen camera. Clients were made aware of the pen camera during the initial correspondences before agreeing to take the case.

Day #2 of Investigation

Review of the video and audio has been done. Research on the estate and the family has also been completed. To be quite frank, I'm unsurprised that home and inhabitants are haunted. Both seem to have some... unsolved business about them.

The house was built in 1902 by Jason and Beulah Williams. The Williams' had a family that expanded quite a bit. Seven children were bore, six of which expired before their second birthday. Most of their deaths were suspicious being that their bodies were found bloody and broken. Death reports stated that they were either mauled by a rogue bear, or the children were beaten and killed by a jealous neighbor. Both stories seem unlikely, especially since bears were rarely seen in that area at the time, and the closest neighbors were around two miles away. According to the records of the funeral home at the time, no viewings or funerals were held.

After the deaths of the six children, the last remaining child was showered in adoration, according to a diary found within the home. Said diary was found when the Williams' were found beheaded... by their own son. Bartholomew Williams had slain his parents on his fifteenth birthday. The reason?

"Those swine wouldn't let them live. They wouldn't let me live! All I wanted was an ordinary life! A Plain Jane life! I never asked to be their Devil prodigy. I never asked for them demons to come knocking!! Damn them! Damn them to Hell for all eternity!! I'll see them there. I'll make them regret the day they decided to keep me alive!!"

Turns out, they'd killed their own children. They killed them as a sacrifice to Satan himself so that their first son would become this... monster of sorts. They wanted their son to grow into something twisted. They wanted their son to eventually become a demon through his actions. According to Beulah's diary, it all went according to plan. She knew he would snap and kill them in some gruesome way. I'm not sure if beheading was the preferred choice for her, but that's it ended for them.

Since then, there seems to be a string of hauntings that range from simple bumps in the night all the way to full on attacks. Scratching, biting, objects thrown, people thrown. You name it, it has happened. Demons were theorized to be there. Demons seem to be a reoccurring theme here.

As for the Swanson's, that family tree is almost like a carrot. As it turns out, the happy couple are second cousins. Logically speaking, that is genetically a bad idea. However, in the vein of keeping 'power' strong, it makes sense. Wrong morally, but it still makes sense. The Swanson family has a long list of magic workers, demonolatrists, and priestesses. Spells, rituals, demonic worshipping, and temple priestesses for various deities. Most of the worshipping though? Demons were the focus.

According to the couple, they do not partake in such family traditions. While they did admit that their incestuous marriage was arranged and accepted by them, the rituals were not something they have partaken in for years. That creepy uncle? He was one that partook in such traditions, and according to the uncle's wife, he enchanted each and every one of those dolls in the attic. Every single one.

On to the audio and visual evidence. The two EVP sessions proved fruitful, the collection of twelve photos taken have resulted in at least four of them having phenomena present, and the video taken shows a handful of instances of something throughout the house following the Swansons and myself up to the attic. The entity seen looked human or humanoid.

Hypothetically, this could have been the uncle or possibly even the previous owners of this residence. I will have to further investigate on the video taken. Thus far, however, the evidence definitely points to a paranormal haunting. Further investigation will continue tomorrow.

Day #3 of Investigation

Further analysis of the audio files revealed the entity that was caught most often was, very possibly, a demon or at least a darker spirit. Growls were heard often, as were hisses when the Swansons discussed some of their family history. Could this be the demon that the Williams sacrificed their children to? Bartholomew himself? Could this be the 'creepy uncle'?

Answers are obtained to these questions, in due time. Tonight, a seance will be performed through the means of an ouija board, a pendulum, and candles. By cycling through the divination means, there should be some sort of sign as to who it is. Let's just hope that things don't get out of hand.

The means of information gathering has been completed, and it is as I thought. I got two spirits to respond to our efforts. As it turns out, Bartholomew is not as bad as originally theorized or shown in the newspapers records. He has been guarding the house, yes, so that explains the bumps in the night over the years. That also explains some more serious cases of poltergeist activity in the past. Bartholomew would put the activity into overdrive when the home's inhabitants weren't so savory, or when abuse was present.

The second spirit caught in the house? That creepy uncle is now an upset uncle. He'd been moving the dolls, the furniture, and he'd been causing the foot steps in the attic. The reason for being upset? The couple didn't like the dolls enough to showcase them downstairs. Of all things to be upset about, it was that. It almost feels anticlimactic.

Nonetheless, compromise has been made. Bartholomew only asks that the Swansons continue being as they are, loving to one another and nice to as many people as possible, things he wanted to see and have done in life. Creepy Uncle Mark, well, he just wants a couple of the dolls downstairs. "The best of the bunch," is what I believe he said. Class A EVP material.

The Swansons have since left two dolls downstairs, a ballerina in a lilac tutu with a bright red nose and a mime with it's hand raise in a wave of hello. A promise has also been made to Bartholomew. The couple will also be leaving small offerings on an altar dedicated to the souls that pass.

6 Months Later

The couple has since reached out to PPIC and shared what has been happening. The activity that once kept them up at night and on edge has since declined to a relatively peaceful pace. Once in a while, they'll feel a random cold burst in a room, and they'll say hello. The offerings seem to have helped calm another spirits that have passed through that residence. While there is no want for casting spells or having complex rituals, the Swansons have started to go back to some of their spiritual roots with observing the sabbats, sitting in the moonlight and praying, and doing weekly home cleansing using the sound of bells.

Case is officially closed.

June 18th New Moon

The New Moon energy always magnifies our opportunities, and always favors what provides us with greater freedom, self-sufficiency, and possibilities. The choices that we make during this time will impact all of our existences. As a result, it is important that we pay extra attention to what we choose and do.

This New Moon has powerful transformation energy present. This is a time where we must stand strong in making breakthroughs, and don’t allow ourselves to break down. It is a time for transforming what isn’t working into what will work. We must allow things to end, that can no longer move forward; or to shift the role that they have in our life. No matter what comes up to try and defeat you, you must keep moving forward. This is a time where some people cannot move forward with you; and it will be time to let them go. Use extra caution in all that you do; since there is a greater propensity to experience accidents.

This is a time, where our experiences are teaching us valuable lessons; and the lessons that they have to offer will serve as a catalyst to our own successes, as well as inspire others towards success. It is a time where we are called to move forward with our own plans; but to also draw on the wisdom of others who know how to help us create successes. This can be a great time to start a new course or take a workshop that helps you to create from your own unique style; and to connect with what original ideas you have.

Communications are challenging and often unclear; and this can lead to misunderstandings. It is important that you make certain that others have understood you, and that you have understood them. Intuition is strong, and it is likely that we will receive signs and symbols to help us out where our mind is not clear. It is important that we don’t take any chances where weather is coming in. It can take unexpected and unpredictable turns; so, it is important that we remain close to safety and give ourselves more time than we think for getting to safety. It is worth having extra supplies on hand as a preventative measure.

This is a time that favors being in gratitude for small and simple things. There is so much profoundness in the basic everyday things; but we need to take time to see them. While we may have an adventurous spirit right now; it is best that we adventure virtually, through daydreams, or by trying out new things right in our own space. This is a great time to find ways to open up more time for experiencing life.

This is a time where we will need to break any work projects and obligations into smaller pieces. It may be hard to get things done; so instead we want to consider focusing on cleaning things up, or bringing things to completion, and tying off those loose ends that have been waiting to be taken care of. At this time, we may find our responsibilities are more with helping others to get through challenges, than actual physical work.

Upheaval comes through those that try to trigger rebellion and reactions with us. Some are stirring up drama specifically to put is in a bad or unfavorable position; or to do something that will lead us to sabotage our own favorable future. It is likely they will use the past to provoke and trigger us in some way. What they are really doing is to try to separate and divide people with anger, hate, and strife; which would traumatize them into bringing their own demise. This is all about power and control that is rooted in lies which began in the past, and are being used in the present to move people in an unfavorable direction for the future. It is important that we find appropriate and legal ways to stand up to those trying to create dissension; and bring forward the truth behind what has gotten separated on the path, and let that restore unity.

I welcome you to keep moving forward; no matter what comes up to try to defeat you. What if this is about changing what isn’t working in your life for what will work; and in doing that you are closing out aspects of your life, so that you can open up new aspects?

I welcome you to learn as much as you can from the experiences you are having. What if your experiences are a catalyst to your own success; and an inspiration for others to succeed as well?

I welcome you to follow up on things to help avoid misunderstandings. What if this helps to bring clarity where there is confusion?

I welcome you to be in gratitude for small and simple things. What if you take time to see how profound basic and everyday things are?

I welcome you to see that your responsibilities may be more about helping others than getting work done. What if you keep tasks broken into smaller pieces, so that you can still easily help others if needed?

I welcome you to be aware of where others are trying to provoke you into reaction and rebellion; and are trying to create anger, hate, and strife. What if this is just an attempt to move people in an unfavorable direction; and the key is to use their tactics and narratives to bring out the truth in appropriate and legal ways that will unite people?

Takin a break for the first time in a while

It feels weird to be saying that again. It's been prolly.. 2ish months since I've cared how much I take. Let alone not having any at all lmao. I didn't forget that I'm mean to explain myself and I have been working on a draft for that.. tho it wont be posted for a little while.

tldr: temp break for a week. possibly still dosing but much lower and only taken where needed to prevent adverse effects to not get in the way of a massive project I'll be working on. At most probably 2-3 for the week vs 1-3 a day. No posts of any kind til at least the 14th. Even if I dose, no documenting as I'll strictly be sleeping and working to have any possibility of get this shit done in time

Reason being R's birthday is coming up. She's been in a slump since her breakup. Course I mean. Losing someone that you had that much history plans with is awful. Even if it was only a year. I couldn't imagine how she feels rn. Whiich is why I'm bothering to do all this..

I promised I'd make her some bracelets months ago since it's a longtime hobby of mine. Been making rubber band bracelets since middle school. Wayyy past the rainbow loom craze tho.. smh. I still get so salty about that. COULD YOU IMAGINE THE MONEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ME COULDA MADE??? Even if I only knew half the patterns I knew now I woulda made BANK bruh.. but nah. 5 years after the fact I finally learn it

Then during quarantine I picked up friendship bracelets and kandi, with friendship bracelets being my preferred type. Made sooooo many... only to never wear em. I never wore any of my bracelets if I'm being real. It's so backwards

Ah but anyway. Yeah. I'm gonna give her pretty much all of the bracelets that're worth a damn and I have probably... 40ish patterns saved on top of that

....and like 10 keychains.....

Kinda overboard I know. I was originally content with just sending all the bracelets I've made through this year with a few extra but.. then i went and caught the fr feels (the actual term for that feels cheesy 🙃) so didn't feel like it was enough for her. So I started casually making a list of shit I wanted to make which got massive sooooo quickly

Thennn shit happened and my progress pretty much halted. During the time we were on the phone all the time I made a good 20% of my list which was pretty good for 2ish months of heavily interrupted work so I thought I'd have this all done wayyy before her birthday

Did not expect half the shit that went on in the time since.

I've BARELY made progress since. I've maybe made... 5 bracelets in the time since. I get kinda cold/shaky when I'm high + a good majority of the time I'm either salty/crying/thinking up a storm or dancing around my room/listening to music/playing a game tryna act like dph is pink dopamine. Basically, I'm not too productive when I'm gone. HA ofc unless I want the shit when I'm doing something I need to be productive for. Then I'll bullshit til I get some..

Tangent mb mb. Two other things happened. Uh one I just realized I misremembered her birthday. It is in fact NOT the 28th as I thought it was.. it's the 18th. Only recently checked and saw so that was fun. Then she got broken up with and went pretty much silent ever since. I think we were otp damn near everyday before we went to bed during that period of them being together but not speaking. Then like 2-3 days after her partner left she said the whole I don't know if you can help shit so I haven't really talked to her since. I tried checking in one other time but it was still pretty obvious she didn't really wanna talk so I've been giving her her space. I know it'd probably be the smart/right thing to keep reaching out even if it'd annoy her but she'll turn off notifs in a heartbeat. i think she only recently turned em back on actually I asked her about something and it didn't take hours.. its a pathetic that is something I'm genuinely happy about..

Ah but yeah us not really talking plus her being so sad is kinda pushing me to make her present as grandiose as I can. She's not that sort of person anyway I'm sure even if I made her one she'd wear that shit til it fucking disintegrates but I'm hoping a bigger selection will make her feel less obligated to do all that. Plus I wanna show her that friendships/relationships shouldn't be so transactional you know? It'd be hella easy for me to just send the few I've already made and just say fuck it. We aren't talking rn and I didn't get a gift. I didn't even get a happy birthday period til the next day off of some fight with her and her partner that had her crying and sulking the day away. But even with that, she's a good friend to me period. I don't need her to be there for me every single time for her to reap the rewards from that. It sounds kinda stupid just saying it. Ah yes, you've sat there and helped me plenty of rough times and have made a strong friendship with me even with me CONSTANTLY trying to push you away but you forgot my birthday and been quiet for the last week so therefore fuck your present. Like ?? stupid. I'm sure she's gonna see it that way though smh. I'm already writting a gentle stfu letter to put in there so she'll hopefully ease up on herself a bit

Ah anyway. Long story short I can't risk the nonsense of benadryl rn. Shit makes getting out of bed hella hard and I can't have anything effecting my hands as I gotta to be able to make knots quick quick if I have any chance of getting the entire list done. So unless some life shit happens, I'm going 110% on that. Ideally, as little sleep as needed to not make too many mistakes as its a hassle to untie. I would say no sleep but I'm sure a week of that aint possible so I'm aiming for 2 hours a day. 30 mins of naps when needed though I really need to have it all right the first time to not waste time. It takes me a good minute or 2 to untie a single wrong knot so it's not even worth. The time I waste sleeping'll pay for itself in accuracy.

I'm assuming this all means no dph til at least next week. Works out honestly I'm running low on pills anyway. That's been weird to think on. I calculated it all out and it's kinda shocking. It's the most real feeling evidence of my addiction. If I were taking the proper dose, I could take it every single day and it'd still last roughly 3 years. I've only had mine since Feb 23rd and I have probably 100ish pills left. Shit honestly felt unlimited for a while..

Well, ig if the week goes to plan I'd be killing two birds with one stone, tho i doubt. If I have any issues with nightmares, I'm taking some no questions asked. I never get the hallucinations benadryl is so infamous for but when I'm withdrawing bad enough allll that horrible shit gets crammed in my dreams. God.. I remember the first few I like they happened recently. Had one where an end of the world paradise suddenly went dire and everyone just started killing themselves to save themselves from dying of starvation/thirst and I had to listen to every single sound from that. Another where I was accidentally drugged tryna help a friend and spent the entire dream running while going in and out of consciousness which made getting back to their house/evading the police terrifying. Most recently I had to help/defend a family with various deformities while trying to hold it together to not make them feel like I was upset because of their looks when in reality it was from having to scream and yell at people gawking at the kids I was helping. That and having about 40 people to take care of and it all being sprung on me out of nowhere. Which after was said and done took a seemingly casual turn to a free dinner in the lobby with the rest apartments residents being in there. I naively sat and picked something I knew would be good not thinking anything of it, only for the random people I sat with all being replaced with these older women yelling at me for picking so casually. Ah then all grabbed me and forced me to watch my dad cut some dude's head off with these giant shears. Ah. That was the first time I've actually cried in my sleep. Well... ish I clearly was sobbing from the way my face/chest was feeling but none of the tears. Shit I almost fell out of bed. I was pulling back trying to turn my head away from the whole beheading but they were all holding me in place. So ig I was doing that as I slept too. Woulda been.. not fun to say the least. I have concrete floors as my room is the basement sooooo I'm sure my fatass full deadweighting onto the floor would prolly cause a few issues lmfao

ah god sorry sorry I did not mean to go that in depth. That is genuinely the only thing that keeps me dosing some days. I've gotten used to a lot of the various withdrawal effects but nightmares + heart pain are really the only things that actually bother me nowadays. I was only going to do a brief retelling to emphasize why it's such a non-option for me but I got carried away.

anyway. temporary goodbye for now. i wont be posting so i can focus on her present. dont know if i also mentioned it but im also using paper stars/flowers/hearts as the like.. gift paper shit. like the thin strands you'd put in a gift bag so you can't immediately see everything inside? yep. uh. had the bright idea of filling that with little mini origami... dont know why th I would as that shit is literally worthless in the way I'm using it but... I already bought the paper and I have all the tutorials bookmarked... 🙃

i must be a special breed of stupid honestly.. within the week I'm supposedly making 50 bracelets/keychains of varying sizes/patterns/difficulties + learning how to do origami so I can fill a fucking box. we'll see how that goes lmao

(Gary anon) Journeys as a premise felt too big, period. So unfortunately that was going to mean some things get sacrificed or rushed. (I'm sure they'll handle Chloe okay, but she definitely could have did more. Maybe a bit more non-Eevee stuff in between or with poor, neglected Yamper) Plus, it doesn't sound like the type of Pokemon most people could handle, which he likely would gravitate to. At least to find out why.

(Part 2) (Heh, funnily enough, I had been wondering if they'd give Gary some wildcard to offset what he's usually seen with. Be it in Project Mew or battling Ash. Regardless of it being a legend, Regidrago still looks like it'd fit next to Blastoise and Tyranitar. I just hope Hatty doesn't suffer the same fate as the rest of team here except Electivire. IF he has it)

(Part 3) They also mention that Tokio was always planned to come back after his debut episode, but they didn't know how initially. So Project Mew might not have been the original concept for both ends. (Not gonna lie, it does makes me worried for that possible Ash vs Gary rematch; granted some of this sounds like stuff that was tossed around during the planning stages of Journeys. At least predating his announced comeback via the 3rd OP. Him having T-tar is still suspicious to me)

(Part 4) (I can buy giving him Hatterene to get through more of the Galar Pokedex) So Scarlet/Violet is November 18th, 20-23 episodes left it is! (It seems the time themes were true. Love how Lechonk is the new Wooloo. The legends looking like giant lizard bikes. The new professors and rival has certainly 'resonated' well with the fans. xD We might be in a school theme, and apparently there's no linear story. We can go about things at our pace how we want.)

Yeah, true.

Yeah, things should be fine there, though it's a real shame Chloe (and Yamper) got shafted for so long.

Yeah! That natural scientific curiosity (and also pride in being able to handle what many cannot).

Hatterene sure does fit the bill for being a wildcard, if the reactions I saw on Twitter are any indication of how unexpected it was for him. Hopefully it gets done justice (if it's true that's the Pokemon he has; guess we'll find out tomorrow).

Interesting! I do wonder about the process for the Pokeani writers, to what extent they might have an outline for a season's plot and what's like... come up with as they go.

I will hold out hope, if only because it'd be such a missed opportunity if it didn't happen, bringing things full circle.

Heck yeah! That should give Journeys a decent amount of time to wrap up.

So much great stuff! The legendaries are cool, Lechonk is a delight, the professors are gorgeous (Pokemon said bi rights revealing them on the first day of Pride Month) and it's interesting that after all these years we've finally diverged from the tree/plant theme for professors' names (apparently their names are derived from pasada and futuro, Spanish words for past and future, which fits their respective vibes). And open exploration! I never minded Pokemon's linearity but I'm sure that'll be really fun too.

START OF PARK SUNGHOON'S POV

I stood there at the side, leaning against the arched entrance. I never meant to eavesdrop in the conversation you were having with the firstborn of the Yang family. It piqued my interest upon hearing your troubles and impulsively decided to help you. To pass time, I guess… or to stall my father into giving me his magnificent title of a duke and have me marry some lady I don’t even desire to have.

Without any significant bargain in the offer, I suggested anyway with the thought that maybe this could help me look at myself the way everyone did before I made history with your brother. The physical bruises and scars we both afflicted on each other faded with time, but the torturous memory continues to haunt us. I may look fine around his presence, but he never had the slightest idea of how I curse myself every single night knowing I not only ruined him and his tender affections with Yena, but our budding and steadfast friendship as well.

I was heinous then. But I swear with my whole heart, I don’t ever intend to hurt you now the way I did with your brother. The moment I let myself drown in your alluring gaze under that brightly lit moonlight, I told myself I won’t take another girl for granted. Not just because I owe it to Niki, but because you were the first person who looked at me without judgment despite knowing your brothers detest me with the entirety of their souls.

I’ve been courting you for over a month now and I’m completely aware of the things we’ve agreed upon about the ruse; needless to say, one might catch feelings in the aftermath. I know this was all a show to give Jungwon a headstart for his own game, but why am I gravely pained every time his name slips out of your lips? Why do I keep myself up on most nights thinking about this lingering question of who do you love? Why do I want to hold you even closer to my side every time he looks at us in dismay?

I’ve come to know that I had myself caught in the middle of whatever this is between you and him; that I’m just the fuel to the fire that’s already been there, left neglected within time. But I can’t help but feel like I need to protect you from him; from whatever hurt he might cause you over time. Although I know my place in all of this and where I stand, it still stings thinking that it isn’t in your heart.

Why would it be, anyway? I’m only just a page you couldn’t keep; a filler in your romantic novel who had the part of the villain origin story but couldn’t fight your hopeless hero. Sadly, Jungwon’s five steps ahead of me. So much for telling the ton there was us in the making, but you weren’t even mine to begin with.

Your mother invited me and the Yang family for dinner a sennight ago. She said it was to properly introduce me as your husband-to-be to your family, that includes your lover’s sitting across the table discussing the recent blow from the Daily Tattle, which was, of course, us.

“Jungwon, dear, have you wished your friend, Y/n, luck on her future wedding with the duke-to-be? Need I remind you that she’s going to need some of it from her best friends.” Lady Yang gently nudged her son who was busy tapping his spoon and fork upon the table. “Jungwon here is finally courting someone, have you heard of that, dear? Lady Choi, daughter of the-”

“The ever famous cheese merchant of our city, Viscount Choi, whom without, we wouldn’t be eating this opulent cheese on the table right this very moment.” I finished, which made the two mothers impressively smile in my direction. Realizing how uncomfortable you become at the very slightest mention of Jungwon’s new lover, I figured butting in could end your agony; seeing that your man is stupid enough to not read the situation in front of him. He seemed more occupied with the utensils than your disheartened state.

As predicted, you excused yourself, and it went without saying that Jungwon followed after you as you rushed out the dining hall and out to your garden. Your brothers and his soon left the hall and went with their casual discourse on the parlor, leaving his and your mother exchanging wedding plans with the company of champagne bottles and cheese. I held my head up high as I walked into the library to reflect on matters that kept me wondering at night. Until Niki strode in, with a pocket watch in hand.

“Riki, I’m-”

“Save your breath, Your Grace. You’re going to need it in case you piss the hell out of Jungwon and he lands his knuckles on your pretty face again.”

“Why don’t you do it then? Can’t get your hands dirty for your sister yet you can for Yena?”

“Do not fucking tempt me, Sunghoon.”

“Too bad. I’d love to see you try, though.”

“And I’d love to see your little mouth shut, Your Grace. You’re impressive, but I’m sure you’ve always been told that. For a moment there you really had me thinking you were about to apologize to my brother. Turns out you’re still the coward that you’ve always been.” Jay walked in unannounced, slightly scaring me. He’s like a lion ready to hunt for prey, even though he’d just sit there looking unbothered. I’ve always deemed your eldest brother with veneration. All I did was drop my head low when he threw me those harsh words, though I completely agree as they embody me in so many ways possible. I hate it.

“A wedding, huh? Don’t you think you’re going too far, already? This ruse is nothing but a shame to both our families. Heed me while I’m asking you nicely to end this foolishness you’ve invoked on our sister.”

“Forgive me… but I’m afraid I can’t.”

Fortunately, Niki was quick enough to grab a hold of Jay when he was about to come at me. I must say this now before it’s too late, and better be in front of your brothers than your lover.

“I will take full responsibility for Y/n. I will be a man of worth to her and a word of honor, I will end any future causes of grievances upon us both. I will protect her from it, just as I’m doing now.”

“You’re doing nothing but stall her from her fate with Jungwon!”

“And how do you know she still cares for him? Haven’t you seen the look on your dear sister’s face whenever Jungwon’s name is brought up? Haven’t you seen that man strolling around the town with a fancy girl in hand a week after breaking your sister’s heart? I thought so. But you just want things to go your way. I’ll respect that. For now.”

I dashed out of the library after giving them a piece of my mind. Though I had planned to apologize to Niki, Jay’s words got the best of me. I headed towards the garden to look for you, but before I could have your attention, Jungwon already did.

END OF PARK SUNGHOON’S POV

Jungwon rushed to the garden, following Y/n’s quick pace in an attempt to block out any possible thoughts about her lover. Basking under the bright moonlight, Jungwon grabbed her by the wrist, making her turn and crash against his jabot-clad chest.

“Y/n, please-”

“Really, Jung? God! You totally had me fooled that day when I thought we were having a moment!”

“We did! But-”

“But what? You can’t hold yourself accountable for the things you left me with so you squander your way with another lady? Tough blow, don’t you think?”

“Please, Y/n, I just need you to listen to me and-”

“I’m tired, Jung. All these years, you let me wait for you for five years just to have you run back and hurt me again. I’m tired of you making a fool out of me, and I’m dumb enough to always let you. Because I love you. I love you so much, it fucking hurts. I have so much love for you yet here you are, always welcoming me with fleeting bliss and leaving me with endless torment. But the damage has been done and I’m out. I love you, but I guess I’m going to have to leave it like this.”

“You still do?”

“God! I poured out my heart for you and all you could say was that? Jung, how can you be so dense?! I wouldn’t have let you hold me that day in the forest if I don’t love you! I asked you for a new start but you ran off and a week later you’re traipsing around Northumberland with Lady Choi! Right in front of me!”

“You were with that man that day too, in front of me! You look at him with so much admiration with your hand hanging on his arm. How do you think that made me feel?!”

“More than the damage you did to me? What a load of nonsense, Jung! And here I thought you already knew that Sunghoon and I were just fooling around to get to you.”

“Well, I’m here now, Y/n! I’m all yours now!”

“No, you’re not. You just can’t bear the truth that you lost me to him. At the end of the day, it will always be your pride. It always has been. I’m sorry. I don’t even know why I’m apologizing but I still will. This ends here, Jung. I wish you well.”

The entire time that Y/n and the young lord were arguing out the garden, Jay and Niki were carefully listening from the library’s window; Niki figured it was finally time to spill the truth to his sister.

Niki followed Y/n to her room, taking note of the soft sobs and sniffles she emitted. She turned around when she felt her brother’s footsteps trailing after her.

“Riki…” Niki was suddenly enclosed by Y/n’s tight embrace, dampening his jabot shirt with her tears. He returned the warm hug as he gently rubs her corseted back, feeling the constant huffs from her crying.

“I’m sorry about Jungwon.”

“He doesn’t deserve me.” The lady muffled against her brother’s chest.

“Maybe you’re right. And neither does Sunghoon. Listen, Sister. There’s something I need to get off my chest. Come.” The two entered the lady’s room and Niki carefully shut the door tight, locking it in the process. He sat atop the neatly arranged bed while patting the space next to him, gesturing Y/n to sit closer to his side.

“Jay isn’t happy with the sudden announcement of your engagement, and neither am I. But always know that I will always have your back, just like how you always have mine. I’ve seen how Sunghoon made you smile and laugh like how you used to with Jungwon back in the day. This day feared me but we’re here now, and I must tell you the reason why we’re all against him courting you in the first place.”

“Remember Yena? The girl I told you about in the letters? Sunghoon… he deceived her. He made her cheat against me, fed her with lies, and tricked her into thinking our love was nothing but a hoax. I saw them one day in his father’s garden, I followed them, curious enough to see how he made her happier than when she was with me. Until he kissed her. He took her first kiss when I thought we’d be sharing it with each other. And she kissed him back... like I wasn’t even someone to reckon with. Needless to say, I attacked him. The boys went against him afterward. Jungwon was there too. With all the lies he wired into her brain, Yena never looked at me the same after that day. And the many days that followed. She and Sunghoon just suddenly stopped seeing after the fight that erupted between us.”

“The thing was, sister, Sunghoon never loved her. He was young and didn’t want to let the opportunity pass, that’s what he told us when I had his collar by my clutch. That was the only excuse he could ever give us. The asshole that he is.” Niki clicks his tongue while dropping his head low, gaze fixed on the carpeted area on the floor across them. “Fuck. I would still have Yena if he didn’t try to treat things like we were playing a game of who could get the girl first. Thinking about the time he wasted on nothing genuine, Yena could have spent it on me instead and I would have had her here, introduced to Mother and the ton.”

Y/n placed a hand on her brother’s closed, shaky fists. Niki let out soft sniffles, trying his best to keep himself from cracking. “I’m sorry, Riki, I didn’t know. He told me it was all in the past and that he desires to make amends now.” Niki jerks up, eyes fixed on his sister’s eyes. “You’ve only heard his point of view, you never heard mine. Sunghoon’s made a whole record in university, Y/n. He goes around the grounds breaking hearts like he owns them. Girls would swoon over him and he would gladly oblige. What an ambitious, cunning little prick. And now he has you wrapped around his fingers, the same way he did to Yena.”

“I’m sure he means no harm now, brother. He’s been nothing but kind and gentle to me. He makes me utterly happy; the part of my romantic story where I used to want Jungwon to be consistent of.”

“You know, I’ve always been considerate of your choices and aspirations, sister. But I will not lose you to Sunghoon like this. I’m afraid Jay and I will have to be very uptight with you seeing him from now on. I’m sure by now you’ve come to understand why Jungwon’s scared of surrendering you to him. He means well, sis, Jungwon…”

“I will not settle for someone whom I have to spend a lifetime second-guessing whether he wants me in his life or not.”

“But he’s been missing you a lot lately, hasn’t he?”

“I’m afraid him missing me is far too different from him wanting to marry me.”

Niki only sighs before planting a soft kiss on his sister’s temple and fixing his fit to present himself back to the lobby. Y/n was left in her room, fidgeting with her fingers while anxiously biting her bottom lip in deep contemplation.

Sunghoon may have stolen her attention from Jungwon, but she had to admit, she never regretted it. She has felt safe with Sunghoon the past months they’ve been together. Jungwon did nothing but torture her constantly with every chance he got. Although they hadn’t been sticking around their ruse’s ground rules lately, she feared the time between her and Sunghoon would be up soon and she wouldn’t feel his comforting presence around her anymore.

Sunghoon may have gotten her used to their dilly-dallying that time apart from each other could make her feel miserable. Not to mention the embarrassment that would come with it considering she is foretold to be Northumberland’s next duchess after all.

Remembrance Party

It was early in the morning, cold as could be. Things would normally be still and quiet here, but today there was quite the ruckus going on. It was strange, very strange, especially in the middle of this dense forest. One could even call it… scary.

The commotion caused Eclipse to fear the worst, to which they reacted by shooting straight out of their bed, ready on the defensive.

"WHO GOES-"

Before the alien lifeform's eyes, there were party balloons and streamers everywhere, there was a symphony of party horns being blared out by small little wisp children which drowned out their voice, Eclipse’s little wisp children.

"There….?"

In the middle of it all, Eclipse’s roommate Relic and their friend Shadow stood, wearing party hats and holding a tray of breakfast food.

"Oh! Um.. Good morning, 'Clip!" Relic greeted awkwardly.

"Ya know.. We were trying to surprise you, but it didn't exactly work out as planned…" Shadow said, eyeing the Dark Arms in a teasing manner.

"You… You definitely still surprised me..!" Eclipse admitted, sighing in relief "But if I may ask… What is the meaning of all this…?" They asked, grabbing the cup of tea from the tray. It was ginger tea, their favorite.

"It's your birthday, silly thing!" Relic said, chuckling slightly.

"Birthday?"

"Today, December 19th, it's the anniversary of your creation, right? I'm pretty sure I had the right date…" Shadow explained.

Eclipse seemingly blanked for a second, but then nodded, confirming that it had the right date.

"I see… are birthdays not a thing in Black Arms culture?" Relic asked.

"No, I don't think… I don't think I've ever even heard of such a thing." Eclipse responded.

"It's because of the inherent 'mass-production' of Black Arms soldiers, so celebrating every birth would just waste time-! R-right?" Shadow suddenly blurted, excited to possibly have some knowledge about Black Arms culture that wasn't told to them by Eclipse.

"Y-yes, that's basically it." Eclipse said, grinning. They were pleased to see Shadow happy, it was a bit of a rarity.

Eclipse graciously grabbed the tray of food and sat down to eat. The Dark Arms surrounded them with hugs, happily cheering as their parent enjoyed their food.

"Did you guys help set all this up?" Eclipse asked them. They all replied proudly that they did, pointing out all the things they did to help "Very wonderfully done! I'm very thankful for all of you…"

"Once I explained to them what a birthday was, they were so very excited to make sure your first birthday experience would be a good one!" Relic said happily.

"That's very sweet of them…" Eclipse responded softly, rubbing the smallest Dark Arm, Rhygenta, on the head as the others gathered around "And it's sweet of you to arrange this little celebration, both of you."

"Gotta make up for all of my… shenanigans… somehow, right?" Shadow said jokingly, but with a heavy heart nonetheless. Relic gave off a soft chuckle, while Eclipse gave it a look of caring concern. Shadow laughed heartily, trying to clear the tension that had quietly built up.

Seemingly as soon as Eclipse had finished eating, Shadow had brought themself forth with a thin rectangular item in it's hands.

"Ah! Shadow! There's no need to rush, dear!" Relic called after them, but Shadow was insistent that it should give this present to Eclipse now.

"A present? How lovely…!" Eclipse took the present into their hands and unwrapped it. Inside was a small poster of a star and a card. Eclipse opened up the card and saw that Shadow had written something inside.

I know my gift might seem odd at first glance, but there is meaning behind it.

In a lot of ways, you remind me of myself.

So, for your first birthday celebration, I got you the same gift my old friend Maria gave to me for my first birthday.

Eclipse noticed on the other side of the card was a twenty dollar bill taped down to the card.

And a twenty, too.

The exact twenty Rouge gave to me after the fiasco in the forest about a month back.

I wanted to give it to you.

Shadow

Eclipse looked back at the poster, noticing a small box at the bottom, simply reading, The Ultimate II, in a fancy enough font to match the overall aesthetic of the poster.

"Do you… like… it?" Shadow mumbled, simultaneously nervous and excited, though more on the nervous side.

"Like it? Why… I love it!" Eclipse responded, getting up to give Shadow a hug "It's very clear to me that you put a lot of love and thought into your gift… And that's what I feel matters." They added. Shadow silently reciprocated the hug, quietly rocking from side to side, keeping itself from getting overly emotional.

Eclipse was the one to end the hug, asking Shadow to sit down with them. Shadow agreed to the idea and sat beside them with a smile on their face. It started to rock about on the couch, which Eclipse felt from the other side.

"Having a nice time, are we?" They said to Shadow in a softly teasing tone.

"Yeah.. I-it's nice to get away from work every once in a while."

"Maybe I'd get to see you happy more often if you got away forever…" Eclipse thought, forgetting briefly about the whole hivemind thing.

"E… Eclipse-"

"Oh- you uh- heard me-?"

"Well, you know, I can hear stuff like that."

"Right, I forgot."

"You forgot?"

"Anyway… I'm sorry for asking again, but-"

"I-I know-!"

"Must I wait forever for you, Shadow?"

"What was your first birthday like, Shadow?" Relic suddenly asked, not hearing the conversation that was being had over the hivemind. There was a stint of silence between the three of them before Shadow responded.

"My first birthday…" It muttered quietly "Oh… how wonderful it was…!"

"That sounds good..!" Relic said happily.

"Yes! Why don't you tell us more about it, Blarjikære*?" Eclipse asked.

*Translation Note: Wait, the story is about to tell you anyway!

Shadow was just about to speak, but Relic cut them off.

"Blar...ji… that word, I've heard you say it before, but… what does it mean?"

"Oh! Yes, I was wondering when you'd ask that, Relic." Eclipse said, snickering "It's a really nice word, is it not?"

"It's.. pretty, I guess."

"Yes, anyhow, what the word means, exactly, is a close companion within the Black Arms, the word has a… sibling-like air to it." Eclipse explained "There's no word in English quite like it. Brother, sister, sibling, comrade… While it is often translated into those words, they aren't quite the same as Blarjikære."

"I see! Very fascinating!" Relic said, excitedly going to her room to grab a notebook.

"There's… another word that's very similar but for a… romantic… purpose.. I think?" Shadow mumbled in speculation.

"Yes! Blarjikamore*." Eclipse clarified "Anyway, about your birthday, Shadow."

*Translation Note: Romantic partner within the Black Arms; akin to “beloved” or “my love”

"Of course!!" Shadow said excitedly.

"My first birthday… it was the only one that I had on the ARK… Maria was so excited! The party wasn't very big, but that's alright…"

Maria and Abraham were setting up the table with all it's decorations and cutlery when Abraham noticed Shadow looking in through the doorway.

"Hey! No peeking, Shadow!!" He yelled.

"Aww, don't be so hard on them, Abe! It's just the table!" Maria said, smiling at Shadow awkwardly.

"What about the gifts??" Abraham argued back.

"They're already wrapped??" Maria pointed out "What is Shadow going to see, huh??" She added.

"Heh, I guess you're right Maria…" Abraham admitted, playfully pouting.

"... Ivo's here!" Shadow blurted happily. Maria ran out into the hallway to see if what it had said was true.

"Maria! My dear cousin! We meet again!!" Ivo greeted her, pointing at her while posing dramatically.

"Yes! Yes! I get the idea, you little performer!" Maria replied, giving the young boy a little noogie for good measure.

But there was someone with Ivo, a chubby young man that looked to be a few years older than Maria. Ivo pointed him out to Maria and introduced the person as his babysitter, Ash Hitchcock.

"Ash?" Eclipse asked suddenly.

"Yeah, that was his name! Why do you uh… question it?" Shadow said.

"That was the nickname of an old friend of mine on the New Black Comet, actually!" Eclipse explained.

"Ohhhh I see! Odd." Shadow giggled a bit before returning to their story.

"I hope you don't mind little Ivo bringing a plus one..!" Ash said to Maria.

"I don't mind at all! It's good for Shadow to get to know more people, I think!" She responded "Speaking off.. Shadow! Do you want to-"

Shadow was already one step ahead of her, walking up to Ash and saying hello to them.

"Hello Shadow-!" Ash began to say back, but then noticed that Shadow was walking all about him, seemingly studying Ash's every detail. Before he could say anything, Shadow appeared back at the front of them and tugged at a chain it had noticed was running down underneath Ash's shirt, revealing a small charm at the end of it, a five pointed star surrounded by a circle.

"Oh geez! I'm sorry- Shadow does that sometime-" Maria began to say.

"Cool necklace! It kinda looks like one of my dad's-" Shadow interrupted, but they themself were then interrupted by Maria.

"Oh, thanks? I really only have it out like this when Ivo's mom isn't around…" Ash admitted, looking over at the sight of Ivo's mother and Professor Gerald talking in the corner of their eye.

Ivo tugged on Maria's dress and whispered something to her. Shadow was close enough to somewhat hear what he was saying. Something about a witch's coven…

"I see! Yes, I do remember Ivo telling me that he knew a powerful wizard last time he visited…" Maria said.

"Wizard?" Ash asked, giggling slightly.

"I thought you wanted to be called boy things? Wizards are boy witches, aren't they?" Ivo asked, confused.

"Witches can be any gender, Ivo." Ash answered.

"Really?? So I can be a witch and still be a boy?" Ivo questioned excitedly.

"Of course!"

Professor Gerald looked over and figured he'd say hello.

"Well how are you doing today little Id-"

"Ivo, grandfather! His name is Ivo!" Maria reminded him sternly. She noticed Ivo's mom roll her eyes, which annoyed her, but Maria accepted Gerald’s compliance with the matter, at the very least.

Soon enough, the kids heard a bit of a commotion start up. Shadow's ears perked right away. It knew what the commotion was all about, and it made them very excited. They rushed out into the hallway, and jumped into it's father's arms.

"Hello Shadow! Are you having a good birthday?"

"Yeah!! But I bet it'll be even better now that you're here!"

"Aww…"

"Aren't you just…"

"The sweetest…"

"Little…"

Eclipse and Relic saw Shadow quietly curl up into themself as it stopped talking.

"Shadow… you don't have to-"

"Why…? Why did I do it…? Everything was so wonderful… I could've had it again…" Shadow mumbled, tears streaming down it's face "WHY DID I THROW IT ALL AWAY??" They suddenly bursted out.

"Okay, okay- just- just breathe, okay?" Eclipse told them calmly. Shadow slumped down into their body.

"Just breathe…"

Shadow was completely silent for a few seconds, until a muffled ring started coming from one of its inhibitor rings.

They got up and walked to the bathroom, their body shaking the whole time. Relic and Eclipse both considered trying to comfort it, but decided that they should leave it be for now.

Muffled through the bathroom door, the two of them could hear a conversation.

"Shadow! Where are you? We need to start heading to Cream's birthday party soon!"

"Oh… S… sorry Rouge… I… forgot…"

"You forgo-?" A bit of silence followed "Hey… are you okay?"

"Huh…? Y.. yeah… Why do you-"

"You don't sound very fine, Shadow."

"Heh… heheheh… I… I guess I can't h-hide it…"

"Where are you right now?"

"N-nowhere-"

"I'm serious. I won't tell anyone. Not even Omega. Just between you and me, buddy."

"Um… E…. Eclipse's b-base…"

There was a soft sigh.

"I see..."

"It's… it's their birthday today..!"

"Is it, now?"

"Uh huh…! R-Relic and I… we put together a nice party and everything…!"

There was more silence.

"... They didn't hurt you, did they??"

"No!! I… I was thinking about the ARK-"

"Oh.. I see. The Maria trauma came and bit ya again?"

"I.. Y-yeah…" Shadow lied.

"Well, I'm sure that going out and getting Cream a present will take your mind off of things."

"But-!"

"But?"

"... Nevermind. You're right. I'll be right there."

Shadow stepped out of the bathroom and started to stumble it's way to the exit, but Eclipse grabbed their hand.

"You shouldn't have to do that if you don't want to."

"What am I meant to do?" Shadow asked flatly.

"You can stay…!" Eclipse answered "You can forget about those Aerthlings! You can stay here for the rest of the party! You can stay here… forever… Blarjikære… terafirok, Blarjikære!!*" They cried out desperately.

*Translation Note: “Forever, comrade!!”

"... I'm so sorry that I'm causing such a disturbance on your day. Go and enjoy it with a better friend than I am." Shadow said somberly before fully leaving.

"The little ones and I still have gifts for you if you'd like to open them." Relic offered, seeing Eclipse staring out the window of the base entrance.

".... I would like to be alone right now." Eclipse mumbled in response, getting up to go to their room.

"... Would… Would you like some tea?"

"I would…"

"H… happy birthday Eclipse…" Relic tried to say.

"... I hope that all of those GUN folks croak before my next, so I may have a Shadow that is truly free of them. Only then will my birthday be happy."

KAORU PERSONAL INTERVIEW SPECIAL HEADBANG VOL.27 TRANSLATION ½

The ideal figure that the guitarist who leads the band as a leader got while struggling, and the reason for his unstoppable pursuit. “When we released "CLEVER SLEAZOID", we were still chasing an ideal, and I think we didn’t reach it. We didn’t, but I feel that pursuing how we could do that, the power at that time, remains in it as something that could be only be produced at that moment. If you look at it now, I think it’s connected to reality”

Notes before reading: This is the first part of the personal interview of Kaoru from the magazine Headbang Vol.27 released on 18th August 2020. Starting with the process of making the single, leading up to the completion of this new song, the days of struggling to pursue the ideal sound, the originality that they got from that, and the current band that has not changed from the past intense days. What I saw on him was, the figure of a stoic leader who bet on Dir en grey possibilities and devoted himself to it. Also in the latter half of the interview with the theme of “Albums that inspired you”, he did not only talk about X Japan and national legendary bands that changed his life, but he also talked enthusiastically about the unknown world that he learnt from Hide and Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi, who he is a fan of. “I think there is something that can be challenged now” -First of all, I would like to ask you about the corona outbreak we are currently in, but it was impressive when you, with your own words, announced on SNS a live without audience ‘The World You Live In” that was held in March with the message of "it’s not the things that we can do now , it’s the things that only can be done now”. I thought the movements of DIR EN GREY with these rare activities and projects that entertained fans were summarized in those words. K: Well, that's right. There are things that can be done in the current limited situation, things that we wouldn't normally do, things that we didn't come to, and things that we can challenge now. There were quite a few things that were more like "Let's do it". Regarding lives without audience, we don’t know how long this situation will keep going on but, under these circumstances, it wasn't that much at that point in time for us to perform live. We thought it would be a plus for what we are expressing and what we are going to express in the future. Also, we tried to do it in a moment in which you could feel something. -Including the streaming that came after that, I think there are many people who felt closer to DIR EN GREY. In particular, the livestream of talk between members (DIR EN GREY LIVE ARCHIVE & SPECIAL TALK) is a project that you wouldn’t had think of before, isn’t it? K: (laughs) We don't usually talk much. -(Laughs) Moreover, I thought that it was only now that we could see an appearance of the combination of Kaoru and Shinya acting ‘as usual’. K: Well, that's right (laughs). -Is that something that you could do now, 23 years after your formation as band? K: No (laughs), the main reason is to do it is the situation right now. If this weren't the case, I think the idea wouldn’t even come up. Normally there are live performances, so I'd like people to feel it there, but we can't do that now. Well, it’s just to entertain the fans, but after all we thought it would be nice if they could feel something similar to that, feeling excited by our presence. -I see. So, regarding the status of the announced the Pia Arena MM performances for the tour final "The Insulated World -The Screams of Alienation-" in July, you probably were thinking about what do to about them until the very last minute. K: That's right. It was decided a few days before the announcement that the lives were canceled. Of course, we also made a set list, and the production side was also moving. The entirely staff were informed, and everything was working. I actually went to the venue and talked about how it would be possible to hold the lives in these conditions. However, there may be some people who couldn’t come no matter how much they tried to. There was also the risk of not knowing if you can do it until you start it. -I think it was canceled after assuming the kind of live performance that was possible to be held, but it was a really tough decision. K: Well, it couldn’t be helped. -Oh, in a nutshell. K: Yes, it couldn’t be helped, it couldn’t be helped. What we could do following the rules (the government guidelines) is the reason we couldn't do it. Tickets were sold in advance through the fanclub, but in fact, with the spreading of Corona on the way it already had a significant impact on sales. -Oh, that was what happened? K: Yes. So, in response to that, we even came up with the idea that all the arena would have seats not only the designed areas. We could do that by reducing the capacity in order to keep a social distance. That way, we also thought that we might be able to do it. However, there may still be some people who wouldn’t be able to come, and moreover, there were a lot of things that we couldn’t do in both days. Well, it was a half-way point situation. Therefore, there is no choice but when the situation calms down, to relocate the dates. -Under such circumstances, you said you were producing the single in parallel. K: Yes, we were planning to release it around the Pia Arena performances, so we have been working on it for some time. -And “Ochita koto ga aru sora” was completed. The original melody was composed by you but, the title was announced in May. I wondered if it was going to be a song that brings melancholic elements to the forefront. I was trying to imagine it. K: (Laughs) Ah, the atmosphere of the title. -Yes. The sound that we actually got is bursting with DIR EN GREY-ish aggression that explodes from the beginning including a grooved dragging guitar riff. So, to put it into words, I had the impression the style of DIR EN GREY was contained in a "super condensed" form. It's used in a kind of luxurious way, with the melody refrain being minimal by scraping off the excess. K: That’s right. This shape (final song) is like, we were really worried about it and it felt like it just got here. Along the way, there were elements that would make things more exciting, more piercing. There was more development. However, we made it in that way, but I felt like “Well, I’m tired of it” (laughs). -Hahaha. K: Rather, it doesn’t seem as interesting as usual. This is really…. words may not match…it’s somehow Japanese. I wasn’t satisfied with anything, so it felt more like I was speaking out my mind (laughs) I scraped it off though. -The reason why the song became very condensed is that all the members were looking in the same direction. K: Well, I don't know that. However, as my method, I don’t really decide (the direction) at the beginning. If you do that, the result will be in that shape and I prefer to explore the possibilities. Besides, because I don’t know if the rhythm really matches the melody or if the back-melody matches, there are many things to think about, so I don't want to decide at the beginning. Under such circumstances, I didn’t know what to do in the end. Well, I settled on something that someone said, or something that inspired me, but it was hard to get to the point where I could see it.- -As a result, I feel that the single became very DIR EN GREY-like. K: Yes, that’s right. I was working on it while thinking that there was that “likeness”

-Did you imagine the development of this single with an impressive melody popping out even though it’s aggressive? I wonder if something like this come out naturally.

K: No. I didn’t really imagine that. Even if I try to imagine, there are things that I can’t imagine at all.

-So, how does the completed form of this song look to you?

K: This time I was arranging it all the time based on the data of the tentative/provisional songs recorded at the beginning. So, with that, it was almost brought to this finished form. From that point on, Kyo sang again several times and changed it slightly but along with the melody from the beginning, it was made with that flow. However, there were setlists that each member made during this time, right? (”DIR EN GREY AUDIO LIVE STREAM 5 DAYS" that was broadcasted on YouTube in May). As you could see there, there are various DIR EN GREY, right? On the other hand, I feel that whatever we do, it will probably feel like DIRENGREY-ish.

-Something that can be hidden anymore. There is something that oozes out.

K: Well, very much, as far as you don’t do something different. I was too worried. When I told the members that I didn’t know what to do, I was told ‘You don’t have to think so much about, right?”, so I was like ‘is that so?’. In the end, the song turned out like this (laughs).

“At that time, I kept struggling to find out how to get closer to the sound I envisioned.”

-Oh, that’s what they told you. As for the form of songwriting, you work remotely regardless of the corona, right?

K: Yes, that’s always the way. So, nothing was different than usual for us.

-The change was that you couldn’t go outside between work time.

K: That’s right. I was concentrated on it all the time.

-Always? (laughs) Then, in that situation, that a member told you to not think about too much, did those words make it easier for you?

K: Well, you can open yourself to new options like “well let’s do it this way a little more”. However, it’s something that I do all the time. Year after after, it’s not finished.

-It will take some time to complete the song.

K: It takes some time. After all, if it doesn’t become something interesting, I feel like what should I do. It takes time to move from the first stage, the members listening to it and go to the “let’s do this”.

-What’s that next step?

K: Listen to the demo songs together and decide to try one from the songs that are there.I think it’s necessary to put a song and drop the world view and the atmosphere of the song clearly at some point, but it takes a long time to get there.

-I think it’s difficult to express this stage in words, but it’s the key to make songs.

K: Yes, it’s quite difficult.

-However, this is also one of the traits of DIR EN GREY but, the chorus that enters at the key points is burning with passion. It seems like it’s going to look good live.

K: As I said before, Kyo is the one who puts the chorus, so it’s normal than the rest don’t know where the chorus is until we record it.

-It doesn’t matter how the guitar riff is going…

K: Yes. It doesn’t matter. That’s why we have to practice all the time during the rehearsal before the live performance. I’m the type of person who can’t do different things at the same time, so I skip it quite a bit (laughs)

-Hahaha. You leave it to the other two (Die and Toshiya)

K: Yes (laughs).

-Then there is another retake of the song “Clever Sleazoid”. What made you pick this song again?

K: He said that he wanted to translate the lyrics into Japanese. Kyo said something like he wanted to try it because the lyrics from the original song changed. It was like, “Well, let’s try to do it”.

-Then, how about the completed form after re-recording?

K: Well, it was already released once, so I don’t really care about it(laughs) Some people liked the original, others will like the new version. Except for the lyrics, the tempo is a bit faster but overall, it hasn’t changed much.

-Originally, this song was released in 2005, but when you look back on DIR EN GREY at that time, what do you think is very different from the present of the band?

K: I would say that there is a solid feeling now. Rather than trying to catch up with anything, I think we are proceeding in a somehow calm manner. The same applies to the stage. It was 15 years ago, so we were young….it was like an apprenticeship, now we are old men, that’s what different from that time.

-What do you remember pursuing at that time?

K: At that time, I was struggling to get closer to the sound I was envisioning.

-Do you mean that you haven’t been able to achieve what you were looking for?

K: Yes. It’s the same with the songs. I was thinking about the sound aspect every, like “How can I make a powerful heavy sound” every day.

-Was that a personal thing?

K: It was for the band as well, I often talked to the members about the kind of sound I wanted to do at that time for the CDs but also for the lives as well, I wondered how could I do it. But at that time, I was struggling to understand it like, “I haven’t achieved it, but I can only show the power of pursuing it while looking for the way to reach it”.

“I haven't reached it, I can only show the pursuit and power of" how can I do it?"

-Did you see anything regarding that aspect when you started going overseas?

K: No, what I thought when we started going abroad was the importance of being ourselves. I wonder if that would be the most powerful thing. So, around 2005, I felt like I was still chasing my ideals. Like a way that I could I express them in this way. But since we went abroad… and I started to notice that being ourselves was the best more and more….. how could I say it?,..it seems that the destinations we were looking at have been pinpointed all the time. It’s not about how to do it, if we could express what was in ourselves more and more, we would change it to the consciousness that would create that kind of sound.

-That means, for example, that when you released “CLEVER SLEAZOID”, looking back, you hadn’t reached that point that you are talking about yet.

K: I think we didn’t reach it. We didn’t but I feel that pursuing how we could do that, the power at that time, remains in it as something that could be only be produced at that moment.

-True. It emits an unbelievable power and it was a proof of that struggle.

K: Yes. If I look at it now, I wonder if that it’s linked to its originality.

-Surely. After that it connected with THE MARROW OF A BONE (2007). Around that album, did you feel like you obtained that you were looking for?

K: Well, I think I did, but still at that time, I was wondering how I could do it. So I think it’s only recently that I’m thinking in this way.

-Ah, recently?

K: Yes, about “DUM” (DUM SPIRO SPERO, released in 2011). But “DUM” isn’t recent either (laughs)

-Hahaha you noticed that…that’s right (laughs). In an era when you were struggling to pursuit something, you became solid as a band. Then, the atmosphere in the band would naturally change for the better, because it means that from that moment, along with them and the music, you have reached your goal.

K: I think so. Also, what could I say about our band?..... All the members think that they have a different feeling about their knowledge and ability to imagine but, the reaction will definitely come when the song seems to settle down in a “this is it” form. Some of us will say, “I think it’s better do it this way”, while other will say “if we go in this direction, we should do this”. Therefore, that we can talk about such things has not changed from the past. While my senses are growing, after all there is still an atmosphere of pursuit in the end, in doing more and more interesting things, so I think that’s a good place for us.

-Even if you gained more knowledge and experience, it doesn’t feel strangely calm at all. K: It’s not. If that happens, it wouldn’t be interesting.

“Now I think, do we really want to do that?”

-I see. So, the mastering engineer and mixing-in engineer this time are also talented, but did you proposed the selection of these people to the members after listening to how overseas artists sound?

K: Sometimes I do. As for this engineer,Josh Wilbur, the director said he would like to try to work with him once and asked him to mix “Ochita koto ga aru sora”.He had been trying to get in touch with him for a long time, but he couldn’t, but he was able to communicate with him this time and asked, "Would you like to try it once?".

-Josh Wilbur is a person whose range of work goes from Avil Lavigne to Lamb of God. How was the result?

K: Well, I’m glad we asked for a simple one.

-After all, with that width….

K: It’s better that way. This kind of person will return what you ordered exactly as you ordered it. Sometimes no matter how much we explain it, there are people who don’t understand, so they don’t know what to do. At first, Josh used to put a lot of effects on songs and so on. Listening to that, Kyo said "nothing is good" (laughs). The exchange was interesting, though.

-If you leave the decision to someone else, something that shocks you can come out.

K: Yes. Wow, this person comes quite a bit (laughs)

-(Laughs) At that moment, you understood his way.

K: So, Josh’s first mix was more metal-ish. Also, the sound of the drums….it wasn’t like it was crazy but it felt like bumpy….it was like “mmm, it’s a bit different”, but after several exchanges with him, it went well.

-What about Jens Bogren (who has worked with many famous metal bands such as Arch Enemy and Opeth) who mixed “CLEVER SLEAZOID”?

K: It’s a different type (of mixing) from Josh. Jens has worked with us several times so far so he knows the directions.

-And the mastering engineer for the three songs of the single, including the live version of “Followers”, Brian Gardner (Linkin Park, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Eminen etc..) is the same one than “Ningen wo Kaburu” and “The World of Mercy”.

K: Yes. If you change the mastering too much, it’s hard to predict the finish result. It’s difficult to know how the mix will turn out, so if you want to change the engineer that does the mixing, you should do the mastering with the same person as before.

-I see. Because the song will be created from the scratch again.

K: Well, that’s also interesting but I’m worried about what to do if it fails…

-About the future of DIR EN GREY, of course, I think that you will only do what you can do under these circumstances but, what kind of expectations do you have?

K: We are thinking about moving towards making an album. As for concerts, it can’t be helped that we have to wait until we can do them, so I guess that I have to devote myself to making songs.

-Taking advantage of this situation, you will be able to concentrate in that.

K: Well, that’s right. I have time, so in that sense it’s easy to concentrate.

-In fact, is it time already to move into the album?

K: Yes. After Pia Arena, we were planning to go to production as we don’t have any concerts.

-For example, the single “The World of Mercy” included an acoustic version of “Dozing Green”, was there any talk about trying to do an acoustic live at these times?

K: Sometimes….that’s right. If we do that, I have to think about acoustic arrangements for that so let’s do a normal live performance (laughs). It’s not a bad idea to do a live like that because of this situation but, it’s like “do we really want to do it now?”.

-Ah, I see. Apart from your intentions it doesn’t make sense to you to simply say “We’ll do it because we can do it” in the current situation.

K: Yes, I think so.

“Without “BLUE BLOOD” I wouldn’t really be who I am now” (second part here)

Sew-Isolation: The Elizabeth Swann Plum Gown

Hello again, Tumblr mateys! Well, as working from home stretches on here for the foreseeable in my corner of the globe, I stand a good chance of actually finishing the Elizabeth Swann Costume Project, something I never thought I’d say! Just one more gown after this one is finished and then I’m done!

This particular gown is a favourite of mine, though. Otherwise known as the “red/plum gown” in costuming circles (or the “purple-y piratey gown” if you’re me...) it’s the silk gown Barbossa gives Elizabeth to wear before the whole Curse backstory is revealed. This is because its colour is really hard to pin down - in some lights it looks purple, and has a vaguely Goth pirate chic feel to it, but in others, it looks burgundy/deep red (and ALSO vaguely Goth pirate chic)

This is both a blessing and a curse for costumers - because on one hand, WHAT THE HECK IS THE REAL COLOUR? How can anyone possibly be screen accurate?

On the other hand, it does give you a choice. you can pick either purple or red fabric to make the gown, depending on which you think is nicer/suits you and neither option is strictly incorrect. I’ve seen gorgeous cosplay recreations in both colours, and they’re always stunning.

As you can see above, I went with burgundy.

Because this is a lovely piece of finery, no matter the colour. Silk! Gold trim! Frogging and buttons and lacings, oh my!

You can tell the designer Penny Rose had a lot of fun contrasting Keira’s slim figure with the big sleeves and bustled skirts - and I’m not going to lie, making my own version has been a lot of fun, too - if way more labour intensive than the gold gown, as it’s taken up way more trimming.

First off, we have the shift:

I had real trouble finding a nice embroidered cream linen - and in the end, after fruitless combing of online fabric shops for something similar, I had to settle on beige. I’m planning to try bleaching it at some point in the future, but for now? the colour’s reasonably close, and I’m pretty happy with it! (This has since had hand sewn eyelets added to it rather than pins - I’m just lazy about photographing until I’m done on a project)

I made this using a medieval shift pattern, because the A-line construction of Elizabeth’s shift is definitely closer to that than any extant 18th Century shift I’ve seen! It’s been designed to look figure hugging and flattering, rather than the angular sack look of actual period examples. I used the now out-of-print Mc-Calls 4490, simply shortening the sleeves of View C and moving the back-lacing to the front.

It’s a great pattern if you’re looking to recreate the rum shift, but it eats up about 7 metres of fabric with the flared hem something fierce!

The red gown itself is a Frankenstein. I’ve been planning this particular cosplay since about 2006, and back then I slavishly followed the Movie Costumers Guide. The lady who ran it actually recreated this costume and offered a step by step hack on how she did hers - so I took advantage of that and followed her advice on how to alter the Butterick 3640 pattern and make it look more like the movie costume!

The full puffed sleeves were another frankenstein I pulled from my good old friend the out-of-print Simplicity 3677 ‘pirate wench’ pattern. I used it to make the full sleeves for my Elizabeth Swann nightgown, and I knew they’d stand out beautifully with the stiff taffeta fabric I had in mind...

PUFF SLEEVES -so crisp and pretty!

You can’t really see, but there’s about three different types of black lace trim on the under bodice, to give it the rich look you can see so well in the movie...

Add to that all the gold trim and frogging decoration and gilt buttons and this is a pretty trim-heavy piece!

Here we have a look at the in-progress black underskirt - I opted to use an embroidered black broderie anglaise. I think the original is silk of some kind, but I’d spent most of my budget on the faux burgundy silk by that point. I still need to finish this before the gown’s anywhere near done!

Thought I’d share my current progress point though, as a mini-apology for the lack of fic/ posts in general. The acres of burgundy faux silk have been attached to the bodice, along with some gorgeous point lace ruffles I’ve been saving for just this project! Just the black underskirt to finish and a little trim on the overskirt, and then I’m ready to pull back my skirts and be menaced by undead pirates!!

10 Dance Vol. 6 Special Edition overview

Volume 6 of the 10 Dance manga was released in Japan on March 18th, 2021. As with volumes 4 and 5, there are both regular and special editions available. In this post, I will provide an overview of the release, including observations on changes that were made to the chapters compared to how they were printed in the magazine, plus summaries and select scans of content from the special edition booklet.

It is often the case that when chapters come out in the manga magazines, they aren't always fully polished, and since I became highly familiar with this run of chapters from the summaries I made, several things immediately jumped out at me as I went through the book. First of all, though chapter 29 was split into two parts and released in subsequent months in the magazine, these two halves were combined into one chapter, with no indication they had ever been separate. I assume that they were always intended to be one chapter, but since the full chapter was not completed before the deadline (and it was a month when 10 Dance was being given the cover image, so not possible to delay its release), it was simply split over two months instead.

For visual changes, the most common alteration was scenes that originally had little or no screentone having it added in:

There were also some instances of either slight panel redraws, or complete replacements with new panels. None of these were from particularly important scenes, so it could just be Inouesatoh or someone on her team didn't like the look of the original panels and wanted to change them. The following example has a bit of both, with Suzuki in the upper left corner being replaced, and his eyes being redrawn in the lower panel:

Personally, the most amusing addition I noticed was when Max was thinking about throwing a party. Originally, we didn't see what he was envisioning, but in the volume, an addition has been made in the background: the New Year's piece Inouesatoh drew with sexy men dressed as cows, except now they're bunnies!

As for dialogue, it appeared to be almost the same in both versions throughout. Some minor exceptions include a spot I found where the dialogue was put in a different order, swapping Sugiki’s lines between this panel and his first line on the following page (in addition to another altered panel example):

As well as in this shot of Suzuki describing how they tug at the thread that connects them through their dance. Whereas before it put the word “dance” next to the part about tugging on the thread to specify what was meant by that, it was deleted in the volume. And while it was originally described as “affirming that we’re connected”, this was also tweaked a bit to be, “affirming our connection”.

There were a couple instances of character names being different from when they appeared earlier in the story. In this volume, two characters who were last mentioned back in volume 2 (Lucas Calvo, one of the champions at the table in Blackpool, and Deeks, who Ernie said hated Sugiki because he "stole" his girlfriend), either from typos or intentional changes, weren't the same as before. Lucas' last name was written with a 'g' sound (ガルボ) instead of a 'c' (カルボ), and this change carried over to the volume. On the other hand, Deeks' (ディクス) name got transposed as Disc (ディスク) in the magazine, but was fixed in the volume.

There was a typo that unfortunately made it through to the volume (but could perhaps be fixed in future printings). In chapter 34, when Norman is testing Suzuki's skills, he flashes back to Sugiki taking the national title from him several years earlier. The text in this scene, written in English, incorrectly states that Suzuki won the championship, rather than Sugiki.

The volume also includes the usual additions that are not present in the magazine, such as the under the cover flap comic, and Inouesatoh’s notes about each chapter.

The cover flap comic (which looks very much like a sketch, compared to previous ones that have had more complete art), features the Shinyas during a practice session earlier on in the series in December, where Suzuki complains that Sugiki’s Latin just isn’t sexy. Sugiki suggests that he can practice being sexy by wiggling his butt around to write a message in the air. Suzuki worries that if he starts writing out “love” or something, he’ll have to run away and escape. Sugiki gets started, and Suzuki calls out each letter that he can make out from his elegant butt bouncing. After figuring out he’s written “M-E-R-R-Y”, Suzuki guesses that he’s writing “Merry Christmas”. Sugiki gets mad that he said it aloud before he finished writing his message, and says he’s going to leave. Suzuki says, “Wait, I love you,” as narrative text says that this somehow turned into a love story in one panel.

And here are some tidbits I found interesting/amusing from the chapter notes:

She thinks readers who are fans of pecs will like Saichi.

She’s not sure if readers will love Max or hate him, but she personally likes him (sorry Sensei, I kinda hate him lol)

As of chapter 32, a portion of the art is now done digitally.

The epic “last dance” scene from 33 was something that she had planned since the beginning of the series, and it ended up being 8 times the cost for a typical chapter.

Special edition booklet:

The special edition comes with a 48 page hardcover booklet that includes a variety of different extras, divided into 8 sections called “heats”.

Heat 1 is a newly drawn, 12 page parody manga. Back in September 2020, Inouesatoh put out a request on Twitter for fans to send in their suggestions for an erotic side story. Putting the characters in a high school setting was the most requested scenario, so she chose this idea as the basis for the story. The title is “And All That Jazz” (the premise makes this somewhat confusing to summarize, so keep in mind that I’ll mostly be describing their actions based on the soul rather than the body, but will use quotation marks if it’s about other characters and who they think they’re addressing. It’ll all make sense, I promise...I think :P)

(The title page actually depicts the ending of the story, so I’ll come back to it later). It starts with Suzuki narrating his introduction, saying that he’s a transfer student to the Standard Academy. He really doesn’t get along with a guy named Sugiki, but for some reason, the two have now switched bodies with each other. Sugiki opens his shirt and inspects his new physique in front of other students, as Suzuki yells out asking what the hell he’s doing to his body. They look at themselves wearing each other’s expressions, Sugiki seeming surprised his mouth can gape open like that, and Suzuki wondering what happened to his body’s facial expression muscles. The bell rings and Sugiki heads off to class, as Suzuki is baffled that he can act so calm about this.

Sugiki perfectly reads a passage aloud in English class, something everyone (including the teacher, who looks like Norman) find unusual coming from “Suzuki”, as they wonder where his usual hearts are. Suzuki makes the decision to enjoy living as Sugiki for a bit, and is shown getting flirty with several girls. He notes that the more serious personality in his regular body is also strangely popular, though with a very different crowd.

A student named Alberko (Alberto in a girl’s uniform) shows up and says that “Sugiki” was supposed to have lunch with her(?) today. Suzuki says that he thought Alberko was going out with Dorou (a masculine alteration to Dolores’ name). Ernie and Suzuki watch as his harem falls apart with Alberko running amok. Ernie comments that both “Sugiki” and that transfer student have been acting weird all week, and he asks if something happened. Suzuki internally reflects back to one week earlier, when he was relaxing in bed in the infirmary. Sugiki comes in and accuses him of skipping class, and Suzuki tells him to mind his own business. He thought this would turn into one of their usual fights, but he can’t believe that actually happened instead...

After school, Sugiki asks Suzuki if they can go home together today. As they’re walking, Suzuki asks if Sugiki realizes what it was that made them switch places, and Sugiki says he does. Suzuki says that in that case, they know how they need to fix it, and they should go over to his house. Sugiki asks for clarification of whose house exactly he means by that.

As they start to get undressed, Suzuki says that he always thought his mom and sisters were annoying, but after a week apart he really misses them. Sugiki promises that he’ll make sure he can see them soon. Suzuki claims that he’ll be the one making Sugiki come, and Sugiki asks how he can talk like that when he was the one who looked like he was about to cry when Sugiki first touched him in the infirmary.

Sugiki peeks into Suzuki’s pants and wonders if he won’t get hard unless he touches him. Suzuki thinks it’d be weirder if he could get hard while looking at his own face, and wonders if Sugiki has AI in his crotch or something (Sugiki contends that it’s not his body). They fool around with each other until they finish, and Suzuki wonders why they didn’t change back yet. Sugiki suggests that maybe it needs to be just like the last time to count as a complete set, when they went at it until they fell off the bed, so both agree that they need to go for one more round. This then ties back to the title page, where they’ve finally managed to get back into their old bodies, but have now sprouted cat ears and tails.

Heat 2 of the booklet is 8 pages long, and contains short comics and illustrations that were not previously included in the volume releases. The comics include “How to 10 Dance”, a one-page comic with the Shinyas demonstrating the tango. Their privates end up touching, and Sugiki seems highly amused, gleefully asking Suzuki how it feels. Suzuki says that he was the one who got all bent out of shape over that back in volume 1, and tells him to lay off the sadist mode since they’re not dancing Latin right now. The second comic is “2nd Step”, and shows a glimpse of how the Shinyas were with each other after Suzuki gave the go-ahead for kissing. In fact, Sugiki ends up kissing him so much that Suzuki’s lips get sore and swollen. Sugiki then tries to kiss his neck as an alternative, but Suzuki’s not having it. The third comic depicts Suzuki’s first time in a public bath, where he realizes that Japanese people aren’t fully shaved everywhere like he is. Some of the old guys talk to him and slap their balls with their towels, and Suzuki, seeming a bit confused, gives his own balls a slap, too. After the comics are a selection of illustrations that were never used in the volumes, including this one from a Real 10 Dance event in 2018:

Heat 3 is 18 pages, and contains a variety of colored versions of both chapter covers and scenes from the manga, a couple of which I’ll share below:

Heat 4 includes 3 pages of insight from the professional dancers who consult for the manga, in which they explain the moves shown in specific panels.

Heat 5 is a single page look at Inouesatoh’s work space.

Heat 6 is 3 pages worth of advertisements that have been used to promote the series, including things like ads that were posted in subway stations:

Heat 7 is a single page look at the storyboard for chapter 1 of the manga.

Heat 8 is a single page showing the covers for foreign editions of the manga (Taiwanese, Korean, North American, and French).

Finally, there’s one last page with a thank you message from Inouesatoh, including an absolutely precious illustration of the Shinyas in happier times.

And that’s that! This really is an incredible release, and I’d definitely recommend picking up the special edition if you can. CD Japan offers direct international shipping, and I’ve also seen that Kinokuniya lists it as “available to order” currently (though they don’t appear to have stock on hand, so might take longer).

Red Wings of Temperance

A Possible Influence Behind the Color of Hawks’ Wings

A deck of tarot cards is made up of 78 cards, and the first twenty two are known as the Major Arcana. They were created in the 14th or 15th century but were not used for divination purposes until the 18th century. Tarot card readings are not meant to predict the future but to offer spiritual guidance.

The image above (from Oracloo) depicts the 14th Major Arcana card in the tarot deck which is known as: XIV Temperance.

Like me, I’m sure that your mind jumped to a certain pro hero as soon as you saw the figure’s red wings.

What might Temperance have to do with Hawks? Let’s first look at a couple definitions of the word first. According to Merriam-Webster:

Temperance

1. moderation in action, thought, or feeling

2. habitual moderation in the indulgence of the appetites or passions

If Temperance is drawn, it means:

Balance, patience, and moderation in life.

To think before we act. To look at both sides of an issue, to walk in another’s shoes or their path before we pass judgement. To be compassionate, considerate and fair in our dealings with others (bluestartarot).

That you have a clear, long-term vision of what you want to achieve. You are not rushing things along; instead, you are taking your time to ensuer that you do the best job you can. You know you need a moderate, guided appraoch to reach your goals (biddytarot).

Other Red-Winged Figures

Before we begin I’m going to point out that there are a couple other Red-Winged figures amongst the Major Arcana.

I’m not aware if nudity in art is allowed on Tumblr so just to be safe, I cut the bottom half of both these cards because they depict nude individuals.

The tarot card on the right is VI The Lovers and XX Judgement. Out of the two, I think you could perhaps make some connections with Judgement and Hawks but I think that Temperance works the best.

Symbols of the 14th Arcana

There are quite a few symbols on XIV Temperance, but I’m going to focus on a select few. Interpretations may differ based on the source but I tried to stick with those that were repeated throughout the different websites I read through.

The most important part of this card is the act of pouring water from one cup to another, signifying a balance of duality and a mixture of two separate objects. This is where the card gets its name, the process is called “tempering” which is a slow process to eventually find a perfect middle ground (wemystic).

Other dualities that is represented on this card can be: male/female, spiritual/physical, emotion/logic, conscious/subconscious and subconscious/superconscious (we mystic).

Temperance revolves around supreme balance. One foot is on land which represents the Earthly, material world and the other is in water, which represents the emotional, subconscious world.

The winding path leading to the mountains represents the journey through life with its twists and turns. The sun, appearing as a glowing light is a symbol of staying true to one’s life purpose and meaning (biddytarot).

Fire/Red wings: Physical passion, anger. Muscles and strength necessary to maintain composure and reach a higher being state.

Blue water: Emotions, peace, calm. Groundness and refreshment.

White gown: Pure thought.

Yellow Iris: Communication, thoughts, learning, feminine/masculine.

Temperance’s wings are either referred to as “fire wings” or “red wings.” If we want to make connections to we can argue that his Fierce Wings Quirk is the source of his physical strength, even though he displays some insecurity about his back not being “reassuring” enough for others to depend on.

Other than his red wings, I don’t think I’m confident enough to draw a clear connection between his appearance and the other prominent colors that appear on Temperance. Hawks’ visor was blue before the anime chose yellow, and he does have the yellow color palette going on.

However, the meanings of the colors do line up with Hawks’ character. He is a character who is always trying to be calm and collected no matter the situation. Hawks is a character who is constantly seeking, taking in, gathering, and analyzing information. According to the fandom website, Hawks’ surname translates as: “hawk” (taka 鷹) + “see, visible, idea” (mi 見 )

While his first name translates as: “disclose, open, say” (kei 啓) + “enlightenment, understanding” (go 悟).

Sun: Also appearing as the angel’s third eye, it represents the merging of personal aims with the universe’s plans for the individual.

So similar to many others, I like to see Endeavor as the sun to Hawks’ Icarus (side note: I also like to see Dabi as Apollo in the Icarus theme).

The bit about the eye is interesting as well: I believe that eyes play an important role in the story telling with Hawks, Endeavor and other characters. There are interesting similarities between the two characters and the Egyptian Gods Ra and Horus (@/bokunowtv also pointed out some interesting details as well).

Recently, it also seems like Hawks’ storyline will be intertwining with Endeavor’s. Hawks has expressed verbally in Chapter 299: “Starting with my origin, so to speak... Endeavor’s in trouble.” While they did team up professionally as heroes in the past, it seems that Hawks intentions this time will be personal. We have yet to see what he is planning to do and how things might pan out, however this path will probably lead him to Touya.

Triangle: Representative of the fire element and holy trinity.

Although Hawks does not wear a triangle or square on his chest like the angel, it is still interesting to note that he wears the Hero Public Safety Commission’s diamond symbol in about the same place. Again, there is the mention of fire again.

The Angel

Because Temperance has to do with balance and duality, the angel on the card is both masculine and feminine.

Whether they are just an unnamed angel or a Biblical angel depends on the source you are looking at. However when it comes to identifying them, while one states that it is the Archangel Gabriel, the sources I looked at overwhelmingly pointed towards the Archangel Michael.

This is very, very interesting considering that the Archangel Michael is the angel who is in all the paintings that people were comparing the cover of Volume 27 with, specifically the painting above: “The Fall of the Rebel Angels” by Luca Giordano.

My analysis first post on Tumblr had to do with pointing out similarities between the Archangel Michael and Hawks, and what that could mean. And my most recent post revisits the possible angel narrative which may be present in Hawks’ story, and how he is referred to as a “fallen angel.”

It’s exciting to see the Archangel Michael pop up again. Michael was also God’s angel of destruction and on XIV Temperance we see him tempering or blending his passionate anger with consicious thought to blend his fiery nature with his super-consciousness with calm (blustartarot).

Temperance Reversed

When Tarot cards are reversed, their definitions are flipped over.

When XIV Temperance meets XV The Devil we see imbalance, disharmony, indifference and lack of empathy. When we preactice excess in our lives without moderation and balance whether it be food, alcohol, drugs, and relationships, we lose ourselves in addiction and bondage (bluestartarot).

May call for a period of self-evaluation in which you can re-examine your life priorities. Self-healing: by creating more balance and moderation in your life (biddytarot).

We’ve seen Hawks indulge in something or trip up a couple of times. In Chapter 186, Hawks asks if he can have Endeavor’s leftover food and Endeavor calls him a glutton. Additionally, @/scarletrain1724 has done some analysis on how Hawks is a character who is often seen around or consuming food.

And in Chapter 265, Hawks takes Jin’s life. As Dabi states below, “sentiments” tripped him up. Hawks displays a lack of empathy here. He believes that he feels sorry for Jin and wants to help him, but Hawks is actually unable to understand him properly. I would also identify this action as one of Hawks’ narrative Icarus falls.

The Moral of Icarus’ Fall

This all ties in nicely as we see Hawks’ character following an Icarus narrative. There are a handful of “morals” that we the reader are supposed to gain from the Fall of Icarus but I’ll pull an excerpt from the part I’d like to focus on.

Before taking flight, Daedalus warned his son:

“Take care to fly halfway between the sun and the sea. If you fly too high, the sun’s heat will melt the wax that bids your wings. If you fly too low, the sea’s mist will dampen the feathers that give you life. Instead, aim for the middle course and avoid extremes.” (The Fall of Icarus - adapted from Metamorphoses by Ovid)

As we all know, Icarus does not heed his father’s warning, whether it be cause he purposely ignored him or forgot and flies up towards the sun. The sun’s heat melts the wax and loosens the feathers on his manmade wings, and he plummets in to the ocean below, drowning.

Avoid extremes, fly in the middle and seek temperance.

The card that comes before Temperance is XIII Death.

In death we go through transition, a rebirth, changes and with these we come to XIV Temperance for the need to take the time to pause and think. To integrate and blend what we have learned on our journey (bluestartarot).

So the question to ask is, has Hawks learned anything from his actions or will his story end with him drowning in the ocean?

SPN Season 15 Spoiler Sheet, update 8/31

Waited until that second trailer came out to post. I am LIVING with all this new content! Mind the disclaimer and check it out under the cut.

DISCLAIMER: This is gathered info from various sources. This is not confirmed information. Stuff in this WILL be wrong. Don’t take this too seriously. This is for fun. Also, if you use this info for another publication, please let me know as a courtesy. Don’t be a dick. It's all out there, but it hurts to see my same phrasing on other publications after all the work I’ve done to consolidate it…

General Info (oldest to newest). This is a blend of pre-COVID and post COVID, so some might change.

They are adding a whole extra day to filming to do the final scene. They will film the final scene last. (Implies logistics- lots of returning people?) PRE COVID SPOILER

In an interview, Kripe indicated that the series ending would have “peace” for Sam and Dean

Not much new at the TCA’s, but it was said it is “unlikely” Jeffery Dean Morgan will be back since his last appearance was such a good end note. There were some jokes about a Castiel spin off.

In one of his cookbook interviews, Misha used the word “we” several times when talking about the final scene of Supernatural. He said that would be the last scene they shoot. It seemed to imply that he was in the scene, but that could be open to interpretation.

Misha said the ending was “happier than he expected” but also had some sadness. He later used “sad and redemptive”

Misha mentioned that Claire will be mentioned on the show, but as of yet not appear.

Dean says the line “stop killing my people” (to god?)

Jensen said he doesn’t see how the story could continue past this season, but Jared said its more of “a see you later”

Misha confirmed he’s in the final scene, but he also indicated he had one week of filming left (total?) PRE COVID SPOILER

Megan Fitz. complimented both Dabb’s and Glynn’s writing on twitter. Not sure if it is in reference to rewrites or the special retrospective that is planned.

Jensen indicated that the ending did change per COVID protocols. Unclear how much.

Misha is being very, very cagey about where he is. Some live streams seem to indicate he is not at home, but he has yet to confirm- his presence in 19/20 is hard to track. In an interview with Metaverse, he was in bed in a hotel looking space and you could see mountains in the background. He was not on set for the first week of filming, so he could be a week behind.

Misha has thrown around the words “final” and “what he <Misha> would have wanted” per Cas’ ending. “Sad/Proud” and “poignant” were also used.

The final episodes will premier October 8th. The finale will air Nov 19th in conjunction with an hour long special.

An really emotional scene was filmed with Misha and Jensen. Jared was definitely not there, but Alex was on the flight they took with Rich, so its possible he was too. This was revealed at a con in which the four of them were on a plane that had an in-flight problem.

Production shut down as a precaution for coronavirus on 3/13, two days into filming. It is scheduled to start again on Aug 18th.

Jensen indicated there might be some re-writes for this ep to account for COVID protocols.

When they started filming, they indicated they were on day two. So maybe they could only use some of the scenes they shot? Then they added an extra day all called it day 9. COVID protocols makes things take longer
