One thing I haven't seen a lot of talk about in the fandom so far is about the financials of this season.
It took us two whole months to get a confirmation of renewal from Max, and I talked at the time that I think there was probably a lot of heated negotiations going on at the time with contracts and that's why it took as long as it did.
I think we see a huge number of indications of the compromises that were made in order for S2 to be made. One obvious one that has been talked about is being making in in NZ instead of LA, to save $.
But there's also the eight episodes instead of ten. And then the cast aspect. One downside of moving overseas was having to fly out and house the cast, not just pay day wages.
We knew immediately about Guz Khan not coming back, losing Ivan as a character. At the time I was sad but I thought it had the air of a pretty harshly practical call. If you went through the main recurring cast and said okay which character will affect the fewest things, has the least character interactions of anyone? It would be Ivan. (With the only competition being The Swede IMO, but he's Stede's crew and therefore a little more central.)
And then this season started and we got first The Swede sidelined and taken out of major scenes. And then I noticed that different members of the crew were simply absent for long stretches, like Wee John isn't around for ep 5 at all. And then Buttons takes flight.
Lucius and Pete aren't at the party for most of it. Fang isn't in the torture scene. Roach and Fang aren't in the bar. Etc. SCHEDULING IS HAPPENING.
The new characters are almost entirely played by NZ local actors, which is great, but also...cheaper.
In other words there are big signs that they did everything possible to give us a giant cast of almost everyone we love from S1, and cool new characters, in the most economical way possible.
And I'm grateful for it. I'm grateful we got S2, and it looks great, and it's well written, I'm having a blast, and we get to spend more time with this awesome cast.
But I also kinda think it needs to be said that the cost-cutting shows. That it shouldn't have been only 8 episodes, the pacing is off. That we miss every time someone from the ensemble isn't on screen.
That despite what they've put on screen looking very good, there's far less costuming budget, there's less elaborate sets, and it's a little disappointing. And it's clear it's not a lack of will or talent or vision but blatantly lack of money.
Look, streaming networks want brilliant shows that people love (that will get them to subscribe) but they very don't want to pay anyone to make them. That's like, the whole moment we're having right now.
Max puts out promos about how great it is to not have unions messing shit up in NZ. Well I have friends who are union costumers in LA and guess what union costumers did amazing last season. This season, well, I guess Stede got three whole shirts, so that's cool.
So I dunno. It's just stuff I think about. I'm not trying to be negative about the show in any way. I'm extremely happy with this season; I love it more than well, possibly any show I've ever been in fandom for.
But I see you, Max. You're cheap. You weren't that cheap when you were called HBO.

Thank you for you blog! I love it so much - I come here daily to read your latest posts.
I'd love to own a snake but alas, I currently live in New Zealand so no snakes for me.
Do you have cool facts about tuatara? I do but I'd love readers of your blog to learn about these cool little reptiles!
It's a huge dream of mine to work with tuatara one day! I've always loved the reptile life of Oceania and literally the only reason I haven't already moved to Australia or even Aotearoa/NZ is because of the limitations on keeping non-native species.
Anyway, aren't tuatara just the coolest? For those unfamiliar, tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) might look like lizards, but they're not! Tuatara are the only surviving members of Rhynchocephalia, the sister order to Squamata, the scaled reptiles (lizards, snakes, and amphisbaenians).
Tumblr media
Rhynchocephalians used to be very widespread, but today they exist only in limited populations in Aotearoa. They were almost driven to extinction by habitat loss and pressure from invasive species, and for a long time the only wild populations were on offshore islands. In a huge success for tuatara conservation, though, populations were reintroduced onto the North Island and there are now hatchlings being born on the North Island for the first time in centuries. There's still so much work to be done to help these amazing reptiles, but it's worth celebrating! The Chester Zoo in England has also welcomed tuatara hatchlings, meaning tuatara have been successfully bred outside of Aotearoa for the first time and indicating possible future success for wider zoo breeding programs across the world!
Tuatara have many anatomical features that are unique among reptiles, and they tell us a lot about the extinct rhynchocephalians. Their teeth arrangement is unique among reptiles, and their lower jaws can slide to cut through bone. They're the only known amniotes who have hourglass-shaped vertebrae, and they have gastralia (belly ribs). Even if they might look kinda like lizards on the outside, their skeleton is wildly different!
Tumblr media
Tuatara have the most well-developed parietal eyes of any vertebrates. These are "third eyes" that sit on top of the head, and in most reptiles who have them they're extremely primitive, but in tuatara they have well-developed retinas and a cornea-like structure! Parietal eyes are covered by a thin layer of skin and probably help with thermoregulation and day/night cycle regulation.
Tumblr media
They are carnivores and eat a wide diet of insects, lizards, and birds. Juvenile tuatara will hunt during the day so they can avoid being eaten themselves by adult tuatara, who hunt at night.
The name "tuatara" comes from te reo Māori, and means "peaks on the back," a reference to the spines along a tuatara's back. Tuatara are sexually dimorphic, and the spines are larger and more rigid in males. They're used in breeding and defensive displays!
Tumblr media
One of the challenges for tuatara conservation is how long it takes them to reach sexual maturity - about 10-20 years, and they tend to have very small egg clutches. They've been recorded to lay up to 19 eggs, but a more typical clutch is as small as 3-6 eggs or even a single egg. These eggs also take over a year to be laid and hatch. They have the slowest growth rates of any reptile, reaching full size at around 30 years and having an average lifespan of around 60 but lifespans closer to 100 not being uncommon.
The oldest known tuatara is named Henry, and he lives at the Invercargill museum on the South Island. He's at least 120 but may be as old as 150, and is still fathering healthy clutches!
Tumblr media
Tuatara are simply incredible. They're so unique among living reptiles, and they have so much to tell us about a mostly-extinct order of reptiles. Plus, like, you can't deny they're so cool and adorable!

So, I know you don’t think there was much to Sam and Monika Clarke after those photos showed up in March of 2022. This ask isn’t about them, btw. Whatever those photos were it was 18+ months ago. Since you usually try to be as logical as you can, have you seen any evidence that you think is credible of anyone he has actually dated since then? Like more than one date here or there. It’s like those photos dropped, then supposedly the photographer said around Easter of ‘22 that they “ broke up so he could go back to an ex.” But we haven’t seen any ex that he’s actually dated. Have we?
Since those photos there’s been innuendo about Katrina K, Karina E, Chloe M, Georgia E, Susie E and probably a couple names I forgot . Have you seen any logical proof that makes you think he ACTUALLY dated any of them?
I’m starting to think he’s pretty happy on his own and very tired himself of all the innuendo. Most of us settle a little more as we get into our 40’s- whether that means a relationship or just being content on our own. Maybe he’s decided that he won’t seriously try to date again unless it’s someone he really wants to be with. It’s got to be difficult to get someone to date him if she knows about this fandom and honestly, about his dating record of the past 10 years. (We don’t know much about what he was like before OL.) I kind of hope he’s doing some serious reflection on where he wants to be professionally and personally post Outlander and whether that includes a relationship or not. I also hope he’s getting some counseling, if he wants it, to help him figure out who he wants to be in the next phase of his life and to help him with his own self-proclaimed personal issues.
Just wondering if you have seen signs of real dates, or if these patterns of assuming he is dating any woman even thought to be connected to him are just the same old stuff that’s been happening for years in this fandom.
Tumblr media
Ugh... where to start...
In general, I can only say, a pattern of speculations and innuendos about rumors/dating/affairs connecting women to him are most of the time kept alive by the fandom, or should I say certain parts of the fandom itself that thrive by it, or desperately wants to connect him with a woman.
After the MC pics, which actually ended the speculation about AM, with whom he was seen a number of times. A video in London as well as pics and videos in Paris. Especially the Paris videos surely implied an affair with AM. Shortly after the Paris trip (and rumored skitrip after Paris) he went to LA and NZ. People tried to keep the affair alive, telling he would be in SA with her, and she would come with him to NZ. They certainly would be together for Valentine's Day. Needless to say, nothing of the kind happened and AM became old news when the MC pics surfaced beginning of March 2022.
Beyond the infamous cafe kiss nothing ever could connect her in anyway to him. Nevertheless, innuendo was created on the fly by the usual ones. Even when he was spotted in a YT video with KK end of April 2022. The vibe wasn't one of a date or affair though, and couldn't stop the MC speculations.
Summer came with the usual flood of names sent to inboxes. KE was one of them, and became a bit more interesting when he appeared to be on a roadtrip. Even after he posted some pics from it by himself, and after posting the video of his 48 hours in LV, speculation about MC was still kept alive. All the pics that could be found from the John L concert in LV were analyzed and yes, he was spotted in some with 'a woman'. Though that far away that it was merely impossible to positively identify the woman. The queen of innuendo even identified her as MC in the beginning. Until someone spotted the infamous dog in the cowboy pics of his roadtrip... that's when KE became speculation number one so to say.
A pic with her has never been seen, never was there anything else than the rumored dog. Despite many attempts to connect her or even put her in the same place as him, all proof of that is circumstantial and most of it even far fetched. So much that up to today she hasn't been out of the speculations and innuendo.
Do you see the pattern, and how it is created by certain parts of this fandom? I bet, with an open mind, you can all confirm we've seen exactly the same the past months.
GE, nothing else but spotted at the athletic games in Ratingen, Germany on a Sunday. Based on some history, someone kept sending the most fantastic innuendo to my inbox all summer. Cinderella and Kristina S, Emily S, nothing but innuendo, not even the slightest shred of suspicion.
Susie E. People take it for granted she's the woman on the booze boat, I'm sorry, I'm waiting patiently for the white Prada sunnies or the blue bikini on her IG. A video in the suite at Shutters where he recorded an interview is somewhat questionable, but doesn't make an affair nor a romantic weekend. Telling me she was not posting on IG isn't evidence she was on a romantic trip to Nevis with him. All innuendo created by the fandom.
I'm pretty much with you Anon 1, about the last part of your message and your conclusions. We know some of his dating life before OL, he was described being a flirt in a very old article. He mentioned about dating an actress he worked with during his theater days during Waypoints interviews as well as mentioning some other stories about dating. Nothing new, he said himself he had dates, he's not living the life of a monk. Being single doesn't mean you have all kind of issues, though he mentioned some things from his youth.
Anyway, more and more people live a single life or only find their partner later on in life. We all make our own choices based on our own priorities, opportunities and challenges we see before us.

NMTDaily: And So It Begins
- Beatrice’s first vlog! What an opening line, I love it lol. I remembered the hand wave on “hello, people of the Internet” having a wider arc across the screen than it actually does, funny enough! Glad I didn’t specify the wide wave when I referenced this line in MARRIED, the fic I posted on the 25th.
- “I’m not too old for Halloween”, girl after my own heart!
- Always thought it was interesting that Bea’s mother is American. I wonder how/why they decided that. It’s the kind of super specific detail that makes Bea feel so real, because who would make that up? It’s also interesting that it means Bea and Ben’s families are both somewhat international. Another parallel for them, another thing they have in common.
- I bet the Aunties’ wedding was the cutest thing ever, imagine Hero and Leo standing up with them! That’s probably the last time all of the Dukes were together before the story starts.
- I’m surprised Bea’s parents moved because her dad got a promotion. I would have assumed her mom did, because we get the impression of her as the high-powered businesswoman. But good for Bea’s dad. Is it canon that he’s a university professor? (Promotion = tenure?) Or did I make that up for fanfic and/or confuse him with Ben’s parents being professors in canon? Listening for that. Maybe Bea’s dad was actually also a business person all along and that’s how her parents met. Who knows.
- Bea says Australia like I say Indiana, lol (no hate to anyone from Indiana though! Just another of those inborn rivalries with the neighbor, like the Oz/NZ one.)
- “A great science program” I forgot Bea was a science person!
- I always loved the set decoration in this room, I remember it’s Hero’s room, and it’s so artsy and cozy and pretty. Love the wall art.
- “Leo and I are in charge of the house for the next six months” Excuse me, does this series really only take place over six months? Well, it ends in the first week of November, so that’s seven full months. I think it felt like it lasted a whole year when it was airing though. Time slowed down during a certain arc for sure.
- “in-joke with myself!” Classic. I kind of love that the text on screen saying “good one Beatrice” is Bea talking to herself again in-world, but out-of-world it’s kind of the Candle Wasters talking, interacting both with their own main character and with the audience. Meta.
- “Sorry my life is so boring” are like, THE famous last words for an LIW protagonist. Honey, you got a big storm coming!
- I was always so incredibly impressed with Beatrice’s independence, her comfort with leaving her parents and essentially being on her own before she even finished high school. I was alone in a college dorm hours away from home when I first watched this, second semester of freshman year if I’m not mistaken, and I could barely believe I’d managed it. I couldn’t imagine doing that any earlier than I had. I thought she was so brave and cool. I think Bea actually shows more hesitation and nervousness than I realized she did in this episode, both because she’s not used to vlogging yet and because being in a new place is nerve-wracking, but I still think she’s so brave.
- It’s so interesting that in a reversal of the play, it’s our Beatrice who comes from away to Messina to start the story, instead of Benedick and the other men returning from war. Of course, we’ll see how the boys’ arrival on the scene is modernized soon enough!
- Harriett does such a great job making you care about Bea and like her right from the start. You just want to keep listening to her talk. I can’t wait to do just that over the next seven months.
- The Benedict Cumberbatch crush is a stroke of genius, but what are the odds that there happens to be a super famous guy named Benedict that you can reference who is at peak relevance in the exact year your MAAN modernization premieres? Truly, this series as it exists could only have happened in 2014. It was the perfect time and the perfect people. What luck.
- Oh, this is the wider arc hand wave I was remembering! It’s just at the end of the video and not the beginning. Funny!
- Covering the camera with her hand and ducking out of frame at the end of her first video is a direct parallel to what Bea and Hero do in their final NMTD video, sliding out of frame and all. Love that.
- I can’t believe how much there is to talk about even with these early episodes. These posts are gonna get so long they’ll have to go under a cut for the later episodes!

1996 vs 2002: When did Taika and Rhys actually meet, or Rhys Darby doesn’t know math
Rhys has ping ponged around the length of time he’s known Taika so much that it’s spilled over into others doing the same. First, there’s time time that Rhys just goes vague:
Tumblr media
15-plus years. Handwavy, not necessarily inaccurate but also? Not fully accurate either.
David J kind of ran with this and then started saying 16 years.
Tumblr media
Again, wrong. Don’t listen to Rhys, David. He cannot count.
More often than not Rhys says it was Edinburgh Fringe from 2002 except two separate times he says it took place in 2003. Rhys Darby does not know the concept of time.
Tumblr media
During this particular recount, the interviewer actually added a note in correcting him:
Tumblr media
It’s also interesting to note in the first 2003 but actually 2002 snippet Rhys saying they were “just out of university”. They wouldn’t have been, in 2002. He was 28 by then, and Taika was 26.
Here’s the interview of Rhys knowing it was 2002 (congrats on finally mathing, Rhys!) and giving us a 20 year timeline.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only photos that exist of them at Fringe: Taika, on his birthday, standing on a chair, and someone grabbing Rhys’s ass. They take place in the same room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The text here of the above article is also interesting, though, as it mentions them meeting at a “small comedy festival in New Zealand.” Fringe is in Scotland and rather well known. I initially wrote this off (even in my first compilation post) as an error on the part interviewer and accepted this 20 year timeline.
…Enter Taika Waititi.
During a podcast audio with Taika and Rhys for OFMD, the interviewer asks if they attribute their onscreen chemistry to the “16-ish years they’ve known one another” (again, probably getting his number from either Rhys or David’s statements). Rhys runs with this question and answers it in about 40 seconds, at which point Taika jumps in to finish the answer and then, even though it’s been like a minute since the asking of the initial question, feels the need to say “Also, by the way, we’ve actually known each other for more like 26 years.”
Audio:
Interviewer: “26??!! I was WAY off.”
(It’s okay, bro, you were as off as Rhys Darby and he’s one half of the friendship in question.)
All of a sudden, everything begins to make more sense. Why there was mention of a ‘small NZ festival’ meeting, why Rhys placed them closer to being out of Uni, why he keeps flip flopping the year span from 15 to 20.
A 1996 timeline would track. Taika had already met Jemaine and Bret and was doing gigs as So You’re a Man (Rhys only references Humorbeasts which would come later). Rhys was 2 years out of the military and doing small gigs as Rhysently Granted with Grant Lobban. They would’ve run into each other.
For fun, here’s what they looked like in 1996 when they met, according to Taika:
Tumblr media
According to Rhys, this would be 2002:
Tumblr media
And that’s the tale of two timelines. My money? Is on Taika’s.
ETA: the verbal video confirmation 😍😍

Asks Comp - 16/4
Tumblr media
I literally did not know The Baby Is You was a thing. To be welcomed back into the comic like this after four months is very on brand for Homestuck.
... and wow, its outro really does match the end of this song, doesn't it? That's even funnier than if he'd snuck some of Megalovania in there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ooh, that's another liveblog I'll want to check out when I'm done! I've never actually seen a Worm liveblog before. Adding it to the list myself!
Tumblr media
Nothing's really changed since I've been gone! I make a conscious effort not to do much Homestuck analysis off-blog, since I want my journey to be fully documented here.
Tumblr media
It's good to be back! I'm looking forward to a full reread when I'm done.
Tumblr media
Would you believe I didn't even know there was a book?
I also didn't know the movie had two (allegedly) terrible sequels, which is very funny. Neverending story indeed.
Tumblr media
Thank you! I can't take too much credit, though - most of my tagging system has been crowdsourced from askers!
Tumblr media
At some point, before we reach the end of the comic, I'm going to have to formalize my approach to liveblogging Homestuck's side content.
What I'll probably do is give each of them the 'lite' treatment initially, but if they turn out to be more canonical than I thought, or particularly interesting to liveblog, I'll 'zoom in', and analyze them properly. We'll see how we go!
Tumblr media
Could you imagine the relationship dynamics in your average troll soap opera? The shipping web for a single season would make our heads explode.
Tumblr media
It's a fun question. What sort of object symbolizes everything?
The first thing I'd try would be a star chart, Dave's magnifier and a literal planetful of Grist.
Tumblr media
Added to the list! Not until later later on, though - I'd worry that the opinions and theories of another liveblogger could interfere with my own, especially if they're talking about it with someone who's already read it!
Tumblr media
I would find it hard to disagree.
Tumblr media
Do people think Act 1 is pointless?
I mean, it is the slowest Act in terms of pacing, but slow pacing isn't always a bad thing. You sort of have to take it slow when your readers have this much to get to grips with.
...okay, maybe we didn't need quite as many Sylladex mishaps as we got. But we still needed some. Homestuck has a lot to introduce you to.
Tumblr media
I always pictured an English accent for Hass - although, interestingly, I didn't picture one for Jade. As a headcanon, I like the NZ one better.
Where did Grandpa grow up again, actually? He was raised by Fake Mark Twain, who was from Missouri - but I don't have a clue what a Missouri accent sounds like, let alone one from a century ago. I have a funny feeling that it's not the accent I'm imagining coming from Jade.
Tumblr media
Now that's a ship I'd never have seen coming. Props to Hussie for coming up with something more controversial than my Feferi<>Equius.
Tumblr media
All four kids, with four endgame weapons, might be able to challenge Jack's current incarnation - but they're not going to get the chance. You've hit the nail on the head - he's semi-perfect Jack for a reason.
I have several theories for Jade's prototyping, and every single one of them would make Jack even more dangerous than before. It's just barely possible to challenge him now, but things will only get worse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Read the room, Serket!
Would Vriska have tried to negotiate? She feels like the type of person who'd rather take a beating than admit they're outclassed. Plus, I'm not sure how much she'd have to offer Aradia, who seemed entirely motivated by revenge (and, possibly, secretly motivated by timeline stuff).
All that said, I would have loved to hear Vriska trying to worm her way out of this.
Tumblr media
I love it! Please send in the completed house, if you get the chance. That's going to look so cool with a moving meteor.
Tumblr media
And they're both easily distractible! This feels like two people who might actually get on surprisingly well, if they were in, say, the same high school class.
Tumblr media
It's hard to say what's a rarepair, since I don't know what ships are rare in the fandom - although I'd have a few guesses about the most common ones.
If we're going for a ship with very tenuous connections, I will submit Rose x Feferi for your appraisal. They're both fans of the Noble Circle, and their signature colors are pretty close.
You know what, I'll just review all of your ships. Tavros/Gamzee - PB&J - is pretty cute. [] I'd recommend Miracle Child for a number of reasons, but it does include a well-written Gamtav. Jack/Droog is more <> to me than it is <3. Like One Sundered Star might be influencing that? I'm not really sure. Somewhere I think I saw a Jack<>Droog. Your pre-shipping chart post isn't in the chrono; also, I'm pretty sure the A6A6I5 ask is one of mine. Gamzee/Eridan is a rarepair; I've seen it, but not often, and it's a <> in the fic I'm referencing. Kanaya<>Terezi and Feferi<>Vriska are strange enough that I've never seen them anywhere, really. [] And finally, Vriska and Tavros. These two are the textbook example of why the ashen quadrant needs to exist, and they're a perfect pair for it. [] ~LOSS (8/1/23)
I don't even know if Carapacians have moirallegiance - but those two would definitely work if they did.
Out of all my ships you flagged as rare, I think my favorite is Feferi<>Vriska. I just think they'd gel weirdly well together!

Hiya,
Hope your day is going well. You are The Computer Lady who has Knowledge and is Very Nice.
Mum needs a new laptop, she doesn't want to spend a lot of money (NZD350) but will nonstop complain if it is slow. She only uses it for internet things like banking or word.
Help? She keeps asking me questions and I don't know anything!
So the quick answer is that she's not going to get anything decent for that price; I just did a check of PBTech NZ for the type of specs that I'd recommend the absolute minimum that I'd say is okay costs around $700 (and that's even going to a lower-end processor because it doesn't sound like she's a heavy user).
$350NZD converted to USD is about $210, and that's about what you'd expect to pay out of pocket for a cheap smartphone. You can get chromebooks for that price, but they are going to be pretty slow at anything that requires multi-tasking, and they won't have any amount of storage on the device.
However, depending on how old her device is, anything made in the last three years will be faster than what she's got, so it might be worthwhile to get anything at all.
This is probably going to be the fastest computer you can get that's close to budget: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKLEN820064/Lenovo-100e-G3-Chromebook-116-HD-Intel-Celeron-N51
And it looks like they've got a lightly-used floor model for sale that comes in just under her limit: https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKLEN820064/Lenovo-100e-G3-Chromebook-116-HD-Intel-Celeron-N51?type=ex-demo
I don't know if that's a reasonable place for you to purchase a computer, but shopping internationally and not being familiar with the markets there this is the best I can do.
If you do go out looking for something similar to this the one thing I think your mom really should stick to is at least 8GB of RAM. All of the processors in that price range are going to be somewhat slow, but she's going to be much happier if she can get 8GB RAM instead of 4GB.
(AARGH i meant to answer this privately if you want me to delete the post let me know and I will)

things i wish you said by sabrina carpenter & i’m sorry by joshua bassett give me rina’s individual perspectives had gina moved away (the 3 times she almost did) .
like ricky being regretful of never stopping her when she left after hsm in season 1, or if he WAS too late at her press conference in season 4 and never got to tell her that he loves her.
and gina being heartbroken about ricky never saying that he had feelings for her too after she moved in s1 or if she was heartbroken if ricky had never said i love you to her and she went to new zealand.
idk just those 2 songs give me rina angst but their individual povs about their pining pain. ricky (i’m sorry) being regretful of never telling gina how he feels & gina (tiwys) being devastated of what she thinks is one-sided love.
she didn’t know (s1-3) that ricky felt the same all along, or rather, was getting there. he himself didn’t even know until it was too late.
i’m gonna break down the lyrics for both songs for ricky and gina, the red is for gina moving in s1 and the blue is for gina going to nz in s4. purple is for both situations . some lyrics will have both red, blue, and purple, or just one. i may just not include a lyric or two if they don't apply so
so the canon compliant/au would be:
“i wouldn’t quit on us” scene and gina leaves forever, instead of staying w ashlyn
ricky being too late. gina ends up going to new zealand and they end up breaking up (how and why? idk. the point is is that she left before he could say that he loves her)
first we’ll dive into ricky's perspectives (i’m sorry). gina’s will be in another post
(btw this is not me shipping josh and sabrina or any way or speculating that these songs are about one another. this is just me appreciating the parallels from songs from 2 of my favorite artists)
i thought about what i would say but i’m two years too late
ricky let gina go. he just let her hug him. he let gina confess that she likes him, and he let her go. he’s too late. now she’s gone, and she’s never coming back. gina didn’t return his texts after she moved. (in the show and probably in this au) he’s too late. she’s gone. and he didn’t stop her when he got the chance. he didn’t realize how he felt with gina. if only he could go back in time.
ricky was too late. maybe a few seconds. minutes. hours. days. weeks. months. now, 2 years. gina went to new zealand and she’s a star. the epitome of a star. she’s achieving her dreams. but he never got to tell her that he loves her. he had it all prepared. the speech he practiced countless times, that kept getting pushed back. he ran for his life in those hallways, knowing that he needed to do this before she leaves. he came to an abrupt stop, after yelling if he’s too late. he was. he stopped to see the limo driving away. he dropped the electric guitar in shock. he didn’t get to say i love you.
he raced to the airport in his little orange buggy, where she changed his life. she’s seemed to change his life countless times, one of them being here. homecoming. he probably broke every driving law there ever was to get to the airport.
but he was too late. she wasn’t there. she was gone.
i can't imagine how you're doing these days
gina doesn’t respond anymore. she stopped as soon as she left. gone like she never came. the air felt hollow without gina porter. school felt longer. rehearsal wasn’t fun anymore. he lost someone who he took for granted, who he should’ve told how he feels. he still follows her on instagram and tiktok, still comments on her posts. she’s still as incredible as ever. but he doesn’t know how she’s doing anymore. they used to tell each other certain things, that no one else knew. he’s not that for her anymore.
ricky keeps up with gina constantly. it’s hard to forget about the love of your life. he follows her every social media, but can’t bring himself to text her. he sends the occasional “hey i’m so proud of you” and congrats, but he can’t bring himself to actually text her. how can you just text the love of your life? she doesn’t even know that you think of her that way. you can’t just say it over texts. or over a phone call. and he doesn’t have enough money to fly to new zealand himself to play her love you forever. and her career is set. new zealand for romeo and juliet was just the beginning. he knows gina is never coming back. once the world saw her, the star she is, he’d lost her. she deserves the world and its love, he can’t hold her back from that. he needs to let her go and let her do her thing. he had to push down everything he felt, the feeling of needing to fight for her. he needed to let her shine. but he really missed her. and selfishly, he wanted her to stay. but he knew she couldn’t not take this opportunity. he needs to be supportive, even if that means she won’t be in his life anymore.
sure, it wasn't perfect back then i’ll be first to admit but it was better than being strangers again
ricky never saw gina coming. in the beginning of the year, he was set on figuring things out with nini. but after a conversation with a random beautiful stranger in the stairwell, everything changed for him. and their road was somewhat rocky. they both had this understanding of each other, that he’d never found anywhere else. well, he did come for her on homecoming, for some reason. he realized that bothered him so much, because he thought gina was smarter (and deserved better) than ej. he thought she wouldn’t do him like that. he doesn’t completely know why he acted the way he did. but atleast she spoke to him. atleast, whenever things were hard, they spoke. now, it’s complete silence as gina tries to move on from ricky and ricky comprehends his feelings.
ricky had much different expectations for his senior year. he thought he would be happy, gina is his GIRLFRIEND :) and yes that did happen, but the twists and turns of his year, the secret dating, mack alana, hsm3, hsm4. all of it. he didn’t see that coming. but him and gina made it out. they were both struggling, but he knew they both were each other’s priorities and would never abandon that. yeah, he was jealous of mack, yeah her mom didn’t like him, yeah he missed her. of course he did. yes he probably hurt her, but they got through everything. with gina in nz, her career skyrocketing, they barely got time to speak. even a quick text still gave ricky buzz. but it was never like how it was before.
i’m drunk too late talking to the moon, writing songs i can't sing to you
just for a moment. well that was technically for nini, but ever since big red put that thought into his head, that it was about gina, now that he thought about it, it really applied more to her. he wished he could sing his feelings to her. like he did with when there was me and you. he was just so excited because she was the only one to support his idea, and no one ever did that for him. he needs her.
3 words. love you forever. he never got to sing it to her. and now he regrets it every damn day. and he knows he told nini that he kicked himself everyday for not telling her he loves her too, but this is NOTHING compared to that. this was soul crushing. gut wrenching. as if someone snatched every piece of happiness he had. he didn’t get to tell her that he loves her, and he'll probably never get that chance ever again.
ever since that day, the things i didn't say, they haunt me
he let her walk away. he didn't stop her. he let her leave his life. he didn't even try to stop her. was he in denial? was he distracted? did he not realize, that the significance he thought nini had in his life, actually belonged to gina? he didn't fight for her to stay. even if she couldn't stay, atleast he could say that he put up a fight. but he didn't, because he took her for granted, and realized how he felt too late. he wishes he could go back in time and just do something to let gina know that he really liked her.
he didn't get to say i love you. he's so sure of how he feels, he knows gina is his forever. but he never got to tell her, and probably won't ever get to, because gina is a star and is living her dream. who is he to come in the way of that?
and i know that i'm to blame, so go ahead and blame it on me
gina blatantly told him how she felt. she wouldn't quit on them if she wasn't moving away. he didn't respond. he didn't verbally reciprocate. now he's paying the consequences, looking for gina everywhere he goes, only to realize that she was nowhere to be seen. he'd lost her. he let her slip through his fingers.
gina did nothing wrong. she followed her dream. he was too late.
i know that i'm too late, but i'll say it anyway, i'm sorry. though it's far too late
[ricky] gina, i'm so sorry. for not realizing how i felt. for not telling you that i felt it too. for letting you go easily. it may not be of any purpose, but you deserve an apology. i'm sorry. i would do anything to turn back time and fix everything. somehow beg your mom to let you live with me, if you have to. and that may be selfish of me, but i just can't let you go. ever.
[ricky] i love you, gina. full stop. i never got to tell you that. the speech i prepared, spent hours rehearsing and perfecting, the song that i wrote, anxiously waiting for the right moment to tell you. but that moment never came, because i was too late. i'm so sorry gina. i love you.
and it was me, it wasn't you it's cliché, but it's true i wasn't thinking how i usually do
[ricky] gina did nothing wrong. she feels so deeply and bravely. she's fearless, so strong, so amazing. she did nothing. it was all me.
and is your momma doing well? or does she hate me still?
terri porter never liked ricky. he learned from gina that she wasn't supportive of her dating, let alone ricky. he knew she thought he was unreliable (not the first time he's heard that) and didn't have a stable future to support gina with. she was the one who told ricky about nz, and while she said sorry, she didn't look sorry. she was the one who was egging mack onto gina. ricky just hopes that now, she likes him more than she did before. but he has no way of knowing. maybe she's happy now that gina is away from him, alone with mack across the world, shooting a movie as one of the most well-known couples in history.
and if you ever hear this, i hope you know that i'm not proud of who i've been
ricky wasn't proud of the way he handled gina's departure. well, in a way. he knew he was never going to see her again, and she stopped returning his texts. he did his best to shut down the gina portion of his brain as what was the use? he was just going to be heartbroken that she's gone. might as well focus on himself now. and look! nini is interested in him again, and he's back to being who he always was. but then gina showed up. unexpectedly. and rocked his whole world in just one night. he wished he told gina how he'd felt. so desperately. but he had just told nini before that he loved her. maybe it was like a hail mary of somesort. anyway, he just...regrets everything.
and if i see you again, i hope you know that i wish you nothing but the best my biggest regret
will he ever see gina again? would she appear out of thin air, like she did in opening night? he’s not sure. he wished he’d realized how he felt earlier. maybe they would’ve still been as close as they were.
ricky knew that him and gina were forever, but he also knew that she deserved the world and she was finally getting it. he’ll watch her with a smile on his face, endlessly proud of her. even though he’ll always regret he didn’t tell her that he loves her. he was certain that she’s his soulmate, especially after he found out that she auditioned for hsm because of him last year. he’s certain that she’s his forever, but knows he needs to let her be the star she is.
ricky will probably never get over gina porter. he regrets what he never said everyday. he hopes he’ll get a chance to tell her one day. he’s sorry. he loves her.
well now i’m very sad. i’ll make another post w gina’s pov soon :)

Help me get my baby cremated
Sorry all it's a spange/ vent post
he/him btw
Tw medical mistreatment, pregnancy, abortion/miscarrige?
TLDR: hospital messed up, had to lose my baby, have to figure out creamation
Hey so I'm not really sure on how to do this so I'l start when I got sick
I got sick around september last year. (constant vomiting lasting over a week happening 20 hours a day, unable to eat or drink) with many trips to after hours and the ED constant tests and being put on IV drips they said it was some type of hyperemesis and to food diary ect
From then I'm on new meds and am coping better with an attack every few weeks lasting a week (sometimes lining up with menstration sometimes not) Still in hospital at least once but up to 4 times a month ( usually in the same week)
So march I come in very sick they do bloods and pee tests and check everything, they say I'm probably either too stressed or I have bulimia. (Ive had mental health issues in the past but I know when I'm getting bad with my eating and I had been doing a lot better)
April I come in 3 times and again lots of bloods taken and other samples given ect. I must be stressed or disordered
May I come in twice and again tests and again "theres nothing wrong with you, youre stressing yourself out
June I come in and they tell me I am 3 month pregnant. There are blood test results from early April saying I was pregnant but because the pee stick tests were all negative,no one,,,,, checked,, my bloods,, for 3 months.
I find that out on sunday the 11th. They show me ultrasounds, they refer to it as a baby and a child multiple times. They then tell me I wont be able to have him. I'm no where near well enough to make it to term and I would most likely not be able to carry him without high risk of still birth. On monday I get a rough phone call saying they can see me for surgery on thursday. I was 13 week and 4 days so 3 more days and I would have had to wait until it got worse and probably have to stillbirth/false labour. So i had the surgery and now I am left here feeling hollow and wrong with a jar in my freezer that would have been my son.
I dont know if I would have kept him or adopted him but this is not what i wanted, epecially not being this far along.
I am absolutely pro abortion/prochoice and if i had only been a month or so or if i hadnt seen him that then would have been the choice for me. But being over a third of the way and being told "Hey you're a third there! but you cant do it even if you want it bad enough" was just gut wrenching.
A friend will be helping me complain but thats the last thing on my mind. Like just a week ago i was worried about watering the plants i had been neglecting for a speel and this week I am trying to figure out how to organize and pay for my babys cremation.
How does life even do these thing man?
Like I've had a rough time as it is with CSA and being homeless for periods, but the csa court case was mostly over, and i had found a nice person, and am living in the first house where i haven't been mistreated and I'm making a home and tmi but i had sex for the first times since i was assulted last year and it had only been a few times with condoms each time and they day after pill when one broke? And then this, like I was just getting my life back and now i get to watch it fall apart again.
Sorry for the rant, thanks everyone
my paypal is [email protected] I'm from nz so we dont have the venmos/cashapps

All right, this is my post about John Oliver’s appearance on Russell Howard’s podcast that’s going to get way more detailed about the Chocolate Milk Gang than anyone wants (I can already picture @lastweeksshirttonight reply to this to say they care, so I should amend that to say there is one person who wants that, but they have already listened to the episode and don't really need to be told what's in it, leaving this post still of interest to no people). So here is a cut.
It's been just a little bit over a year now since the couple of months I spent doing constant posts to update everyone on my progress through the rabbit hole of understanding the meaning of "Chocolate Milk Gang". A journey that started with an effort to just explain the name, but grew much bigger than that. Consider this post a continuation of those ones.
Okay. Okay. In order to find all the things I wanted to reference for this post, I decided to make one folder on my hard drive called Chocolate Milk Gang, where I collect all the video, audio, and PDF files that relate to the intersection of CMG members, and I've got to admit I had a moment of looking at the whole folder and saying, "This is all starting to feel a bit Beautiful Mind." But anyway, it is convenient to have it all in one place.
Anyway. Here are the couple of clips I cut out of that podcast for that folder:
There's a lot to unpack here, comedian gossip-wise. Football stories that I'm always happy to hear again. Between Kitson's radio shows, Russell Howard/Jon Richardson's radio show, and The Bugle, I've heard enough different stories to suggest that apparently Al Pitcher's wedding was a hell of a time.
There's also some stuff in that Edinburgh clip that isn't specifically relevant the the CMG, but is relevant to some other stuff I've been posting about in the last few months. Stuff about the difference between British and American comedy, and how I'm pretty sure those differences are largely shaped by the Edinburgh Festival. Specifically by the fact that anyone can go to the Edinburgh Festival, making it very different from something like Just For Laughs that we have here, which is invite only (plus a few spots that can be won in auditions). And I think this is what makes British comedy much more similar to Australia/NZ comedy than it is to North American comedy, because they have MICF over there that's similar to Edinburgh.
John Oliver sums it up well here:
You can kind of finish your ‘bulletproof’ – to the extent that that was true, which it wasn’t – but as close to a solid set of comedy that you can produce. At that point, you’re finished, really, right? So what are you going to do? Are you going to keep doing that? There’s probably many cautionary tales that will show you that’s not the way to human happiness. So then you start to break it. And that was where Edinburgh, for me, was so massively important, that you throw away that safety blanket, and then the next year you come back with a brand new hour. You spent a number of years making that twenty minutes, now you have to spend eleven months making an hour.
I wish he'd expanded a bit on the "not the way to human happiness" part, because that interests me. Starting comedy around here, I've seen how different it is from what I hear from British stuff, and obviously there are lots of reasons for that, mainly that I'm comparing low-level stuff that's local to me against great comedians from Britain. I know that Britain also has low-level club comedians, I just don't hear from them all the way over here.
But I have heard a little bit of fairly low-level comedy in Britain, and it's still notably different from what I hear here. Also, some of the comedians I hear around here have been doing it a long time (including my brother, who's been doing it 13 years, doing regular pro spots for over ten, makes enough money off comedy each year so he could probably almost live off his comedy income alone if he didn't mind being extremely poor), have done quite well. I've tried to see what their ambitions are, what the path is that they're trying to get on to the next thing. And there just doesn't really seem to be one. There are occasional spots on CBC that people would like, but those are so rare, so few compared to the number of panel show spots that comedians can try for in Britain, if they want to go that way. And obviously, in Britain, the new comedians are all trying to put together something good enough to take to Edinburgh, even if at first it's just the twenty-minute set that John Oliver was talking about in that clip for the Comedy Zone or something like that. No one here is doing that. They're pretty much doing the exact thing that John Oliver described as "not the way to human happiness", perfecting their 20-minute set so they can impress increasingly important club promoters for years and years and years.
It seems to me like a bad idea to dedicate your whole life to the thing that John Oliver accurately described as "not the way to human happiness", but I'm interested in how many other options there are. You can try for TV and radio spots, I guess, but there aren't many of those here. Some comedians around here try to audition for the Winnipeg Comedy Festival and Just For Laughs, but not many get in because there's not nearly as much to to those festivals as there is to Edinburgh. A couple of people around here have started podcasts, but contrary to what the front page of Chortle each week might suggest, surely not everyone in the entire world can start a podcast. You could sell your soul to social media, obviously - that's always an option no matter what your field is. But if you want to do comedy and don't want that, what else are you supposed to do? I don't ask that question facetiously, I would genuinely like to know and I wish John Oliver would answer it. Which I guess he did, and the answer was to go to Edinburgh until you get good enough to do your own tours. Or, in his case, you make some connections at Footlights, have Ricky Gervais happen to know who you are, then for some reason he mentions your name to Jon Stewart when The Daily Show is looking for a British correspondent. Also you start a podcast.
Anyway. That's the part where John Oliver explained some interesting stuff about the intersections between the comedy industry and the comedy craft, but that's not what we're here for, is it? We're here for some comedian gossip! And this podcast episode provided on that front.
Okay. To explain the significance of one part of that clip, I have to go back a bit. To summer 2022, when I spent ages looking things up to try to find the explanation for the name “Chocolate Milk Gang”. I’d found that it had to do with them being sober when all the other comedians were drunk, to them being considered vaguely nerdy compared to other comedians who were more shouty or smooth or alcoholics. So I got the gist, but this wasn’t enough to fully make sense. I kept coming back to asking: But why chocolate milk, though? Do they drink the chocolate milk? Do they talk about chocolate milk on stage? Do they regularly sacrifice cows in the middle of the night and steal their milk? Or was that just that one time?
The clearest explanation I'd found came from a 2007 article that said:
Part of a new breed of stand-up dubbed the Chocolate Milk Gang for rejecting a hard-living ethos, they include the likes of Daniel Kitson, Demetri Martin, John Oliver, David O’Doherty, Josie Long and Alun Cochrane, and can be characterised by their romantic sensibility, intelligence, geekiness, love of indie music and passive-aggressive, alpha male competitiveness.
But that doesn't explain the name. Sure, chocolate milk is a sort of nerdy drink, but there had to be a reason why that specific drink got used in their nickname. I remember at one point saying in a frustrated Tumblr post that in the early 00s, I was hanging out with my high school friends, and we were nerdy and sober and liked to imagine ourselves as romantic and intelligent, but we never named ourselves after chocolate milk, because that is not a thing that just automatically happens to everyone who’s a nerd.
So I kept searching. There were just barely enough references to the term on the internet for me to be pretty sure it was really used, but few enough for me to occasionally doubt that. There are really very, very few direct references to the actual name “Chocolate Milk Gang” out there.
They are so rare that I once listened to an entire Comedian’s Comedian podcast episode featuring the worst person in the entire world, just because I’d read that he mentions the words “Chocolate Milk Gang” in it, which turned out to not even be true. Actually, he just talked a bunch of shit about David O’Doherty in the ComCom episode, and then on a different podcast months later, he talked to a different guy about how DO’D had (shockingly) disliked the comments he'd made on the ComCom podcast, and it’s there that he mentions that DO'D was in a Chocolate Milk Gang. And I listened to both episodes. To two hours of the worst person in the fucking world talking, just so I could hear someone say “Chocolate Milk Gang”, because instances of that were so rare. And he didn’t even actually say “Chocolate Milk Gang” – got the name wrong and called them the “Chocolate Milk Brigade”. And listening to those two hours pissed me off so much that I lost respect for Stuart Goldsmith just because he was able to be in a room with that guy and not punch him in the fucking face.
I hate to focus on him and normally when I complain about that on this blog I just refer to him as the worst person in the world rather than getting specific, but in the interests of laying this all out in one place, the Chocolate Milk Brigade reference is about 15:30 into this:
I get into the McSavage stuff because me listening to all that bullshit really shows just how incredibly rare direct mentions of the term "Chocolate Milk" in relation to those comedians are, how hard they were to find so I'd listen to anything. I did, however, find a number of things that described the phenomenon, but just didn't use the name. Notably, this clip from Stewart Lee's Alternative Comedy Experience TV show:
Or this clip from Russell Howard and Jon Richardson's radio show, recorded live from the Edinburgh Festival in 2007, looking back at Edinburgh 2006 with guest Richard Herring:
Interesting that both Lee and Herring identify them specifically as being strange and different for not spending the entire month of August drunk. That probably says more about Lee and Herring than about anything else.
So they go by many names, apparently. The Chocolate Milk Brigade, in the words of David McSavage. The Hanging Around Gang, in the words of Stewart Lee. The annoyingly sober nerds of the circuit, according to Richard Herring. The Guys with the Bags, in the words of Andrew Maxwell. The International Crime Syndicate that Sometimes Organizes Soccer Matches, in the words of John Oliver (okay, he was talking about FIFA when he said those words, but I think they also apply to the CMG).
That Stewart Lee clip has them come so close to using their actual name, but they still don't quite say it. The very rare instances of the actual name being referenced include that bullshit McSavage saga, that extremely weird article I quoted above, and this clip from David O'Doherty's episode of the Comedian's Comedian podcast that I finally - finally found after searching for so long (I consider it very lucky that David O'Doherty went on the ComCom podcast before the worst person in the world did, because otherwise we wouldn't have gotten his brilliant episode at all, since it's my understanding that for some time after that horrible episode he wasn't on speaking terms with David McSavage or Stuart Goldsmith, fucking understandably):
God, re-listening to that is reminding me of how exciting it was to find it for the first time last year, after searching for so long. Actually, to illustrate how exciting it was, I still need to get a cat and name it Stuart Goldsmith. Early in the episode, DO'D talked a bit about his early Edinburgh days, and I paused the recording to make a post on Tumblr about that discussion, and how close they came to discussing the Chocolate Milk Gang, and how much I wanted my answer. In that post, I said something like: "Stuart Goldsmith, if you can get an explanation out of David O'Doherty for the Chocolate Milk Gang, I will name my first cat after you." As a joke about how I do not want kids but felt that this was important enough to offer something on the same level as letting him have my firstborn. A bit later in the same episode, when he delivered on that, I made a follow-up post to 1) share the above clip, which I deemed the Holy Grail of audio clips, as I'd looked for it for so long, and 2) admit that I do need to name a cat after Stuart Goldsmith now.
I've just dug up the post that I made after I first heard that clip - a post from August 19, 2022 - and in it, I transcribe what DO'D said. I shall copy/paste some of it:
David O’Doherty: ’02 was the year where I came [to Edinburgh] with a show, I’d been a bit sad and tried to write a show… and I met just a bunch of people. I met Kitson, I met Conchords, I met Taika Waititi, who’s a movie director now, I met Zaltzman, I met John Oliver, I met Josie Long – I’d met her before but, we were all just trying to figure out a kind of a thing that we wanted to do. And it didn’t quite fit with what was successful around then, because none of us were… I guess you could categorize it as quite low-status individuals. As in, we didn’t walk out with smoke machines, and if we did shout from off stage it was something ironic, about, like, “Get ready to try and stay awake for an hour, because this room is bullshit. Ladies and gentlemen!” You know, and that was… whereas before, that was the start of shiny floor comedy that we see on TV now. So it was like people in tailored suits and bowing, and getting the adulation – that was just never a thing I wanted to do. My father’s a jazz musician, and jazz is like the opposite of that.” Stuart Goldsmith: In those comedians that we’ve named, do you see a sort of reflection of your styles in each other’s work? Because there are sort of similarities, like a common trope of that kind of gang is to treat something gentle and meandering and whimsical as if it’s, you know, like a rap battle or something. To kind of pretend like you’re Notorious B.I.G., talking about a unicorn. David O’Doherty: Oh, that. Yeah, I mean, that’s… that’s pretty low, what you’ve just said. Stuart Goldsmith: [laughter] Well it’s something that’s copied a lot now, and I think it originated with Kitson and with you doing Late ‘n Live. That whole thing of going, “strap in, buckle up.” But now, every idiot in tight jeans is going, “Strap in,” but without a sense of why. David O’Doherty: Right, yeah. Yeah, I guess we were… yeah, that’s a good point. I mean, I’ve always felt that I’m trying to say something reasonably profound. I’ve never done a show that was just a load of jokes, and was just trying to fill the time with talking about, you know, fairy lights and bunting, which was sort of the perception, I think, people who never came to the shows, or some people who reviewed it, would have had around the time. Of like, “Where is he from? I don’t know, but I’d like to visit it.” You know, I’ve always tried to talk about the things that were important. It’s just that those things manifested themselves as the tale of a suicidal lobster, which was the first show here, or whatever it was then. So, you know, none of that was very tough. I remember once, we were referred to as… Me: Oh shit. Oh shit. Please, for the love of God, tell me what you were referred to as. David O’Doherty: …because everyone else was getting really drunk backstage at Late ‘n Live, and we used to go over and get, to [inaudible, I assume it’s the name of a shop that sells milkshakes but I can’t tell what he said, it’s not important] and get milkshakes, we were called the Chocolate Milk Gang. Which isn’t something you see… Stuart Goldsmith: By who? David O’Doherty: I think Glenn Wool, or something like that. Stuart Goldsmith: Okay, for people who don’t know Glenn Wool, he very much typifies the… David O’Doherty: Well, he was certainly then, he was like a party, a mega-party dude then. I remember Andrew Maxwell… Stuart Goldsmith: [laughing] Sorry, even your use of the phrase “mega party dude” firmly establishes you as a chocolate milk guy. David O’Doherty: I remember Maxwell, who’s a friend of mine – Andrew Maxwell is such a much more alpha character – brackets, shorter – than me, and he once said to John Oliver, “You lads, you’ve always got bags.” Because we had, as in a backpack or a satchel. And we probably had, like jokes, or like, books, and he was always like, “What’s in your bag?” Like there was something going on, just… we have effigies of you, and we have ceremonies that you’re not allowed to come to.
In that copy-paste of that my old post, I would like to draw your attention to this quote: "…because everyone else was getting really drunk backstage at Late ‘n Live, and we used to go over and get, to [inaudible, I assume it’s the name of a shop that sells milkshakes but I can’t tell what he said, it’s not important] and get milkshakes, we were called the Chocolate Milk Gang."
I said at the time that it didn't matter, because of course I was so happy to have the central mystery answered that I could overlook one little confusing bit. But of course, I still tried for a while to look it up. I couldn't quite understand what DO'D was saying - it sounded to me like "favorait", or maybe "fav-o'rait"?
I Googled all these things, but it was hard when I didn't even know what type of place it was. I was picturing a sort of 7/11-style corner store, a place that was open late and sold milkshakes. But I didn't know what it actually was. So I was just Googling a word that I didn't know how to spell, and I didn't know what context to add. Throwing in the word "Edinburgh" didn't help.
At some point I took to Google Maps, and then Google Earth. He said the went "over" to get milkshakes after Late 'n' Live, which suggested to me that it couldn't be far from the Gilded Balloon. They wouldn't travel all that far in the middle of the night when they'd just done a whole big comedy show. So I looked around the map to see if I could find anything by that name, but nothing came up. I eventually gave up on finding it.
However. However. Here's a shortened version of the clip I posted earlier, of John Oliver on the recent Russell Howard podcast episode, talking about Edinburgh. Here's a short clip of just the part that's relevant to this post, where he talks about the CMG days:
He said it! He said it! That's the same word DO'D said, the name of the store, but John Oliver said it more clearly so I was inspired to try Googling again.
I tried Googling potential spellings with the word "Edinburgh" for a while, but nothing came up. Then I realized something (and this part isn't going to make this post sound less Beautiful Mind-y): this is a tradition that started in 2002. The Gilded Balloon burned down in December 2002, and was rebuilt nearby. So in August 2002, when the CMG started, the Gilded Balloon was in a different place to where it is now. All that searching on Google Maps/Earth, I was looking in the wrong spot.
So I did some Googling to try to find the original address for the Gilded Balloon. My CMG research from the last year has led me to know a hell of a lot about the Gilded Balloon. I even know its layout and backstage quite well, since it was heavily featured in that Tim Minchin documentary (I even know more than I need to about how the dressing rooms look, by which I mean there were more shots than I needed of Tim Minchin with his clothes off). But I couldn't find its original exact address. I knew that it was originally in a place called Cowgate, which is a neighbourhood and/or street and/or square (this is why I've named the cow sacrificing event Cowgate, even though that occurred at the new location in 2003). I learned today that it was supposed to become a casino but Karen Koren made it a comedy club instead. I learned that its original building used to be a J. & R. Allan's department store. But I couldn't find its specific address.
However, I did find that the fire that burned down the original Gilded Balloon started in something called Hastie's Close. So I went to that place on Google Earth, figuring the fire couldn't have spread all that far. I set the year to 2005, which was the closest year to 2002 for which Google Earth had archive data around there. And I just explored the area.
I didn't actually expect to find anything, really. But then, suddenly, it appeared before me:
Tumblr media
So... mystery solved. Look, to be honest, most of this post has just been to give context to try to explain why the fuck I was so excited to find an Edinburgh diner that, as I now know because once I knew exactly what I was looking for I was able to look the place up, closed down years ago. It's exciting because it's the last little piece of the answer that I was so excited to find last year.
That's what David O'Doherty actually said: "…because everyone else was getting really drunk backstage at Late ‘n Live, and we used to go over and get, to Favorit and get milkshakes, we were called the Chocolate Milk Gang." And Favoirt is not a 7/11-style corner store, it's a diner that even had a license to sell alcohol late (according to its front window), but is clearly the sort of place that's more about the milkshakes than it is about being a bar. And it is, in fact, very near the original Gilded Balloon. Or at least, it's very near the place where the fire that burned down the original Gilded Balloon started.
I am so pleased to have found a spelling, description, and even picture to go with the [inaudible] word that David O'Doherty said in that Holy Grail audio clip, tying up that one loose end over a year later.
Why does that matter? Look, I'm not quite sure, but it definitely seemed important. It definitely seemed sweet to hear John Oliver in 2023 reminisce about going for milkshakes in Edinburgh, and hanging out with "Jermaine [Clement] and Brett [McKenzie] and Demetri [Martin] at Favorit" - he came so close to using the actual CMG name, despite not quite specifically saying it.
Like I said, a lot to unpack in that podcast episode. I have now unpacked one tiny, tiny part of it, and it was the least important part. But I did unpack it. It's unpacked now. You're welcome.
...As I keep saying, there are worse things I could have gotten deeply obsessed with as a way to cope with the changing world in pandemic times. I could have gotten really into Jordan Peterson, like some ex-CMG members/hosts of podcasts about a box for things people like, that I could name. At least I didn't do that. I just occasionally spend two hours on Google Earth to find a long-closed diner in Edinburgh. I'm doing fine.

idk if you’re still doing unpopular opinions and you mia geoguessbur can probably guess who this is but i personally don’t feel like getting anon hate so i’m anon BUT this is less a wilbur specific take and more me complaining about people who follow bands around again
please for the love of FUCK if you’ve seen a band before, don’t follow them to australia/new zealand. we are tiny little boys forgotten at sea (hell 5sos did a tour that just finished and now they’re on hiatus. wanna know where they didn’t go? australia. they’re literally australians) so when lovejoy come to australia i’m not going to lie and say i won’t be fucking pissed at people who follow them here after seeing them a dozen times in the states and the uk.
like james marriott is finally here. he’s not going to i think 3 of our capital cities including the one i live in. we only have 7!! so i don’t get to see james because i can afford to even go interstate (both time and money wise)
this ended up being more a rant than an unpopular opinion but the block button is going to be used liberally and without shame on americans and brits who brag about following lovejoy to australia and nz after seeing them 6 times…
my oceania friends have suffered more than jesus. godspeed

John Chapter Names
Spoilers for Nona the Ninth
Here compiled is the name of the John Chapter, the associated bible verse (New International Version), and a summary of the John Chapter.
John 5:20
For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.
In which John describes a year before it would be over, it would begin, cryo project losing funding, no longer getting 3%(!) of NZ’s(?) electricity, power being shut off, test bodies melting, except for those John touched, which stay incorrupti
John 15:23
Whoever hates me hates my Father as well.
In which John describes his eyes going from light brown to dark amber to new lager to gold, the gang studying two of the bodies, John getting obsessed, naming them Ulysses and Titania, and puppeting them from across the room.
John 5:18
For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.
In which John describes getting better at puppeting Ulysses and Titania, P— raiding a graveyard, and the gang starting streaming.
He sighed and said, “We had the internet. We decided to stream.”     She said, “What is this internet?”     And he said, “See, I did make a utopia.”
John 8:1
but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
In which John describes getting internet attention, healing people, getting overwhelmed, getting Jesus advice from a nun, and turning a bunch of cows and sheep inside out for a wall.
John 19:18
There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
In which John describes the FTL escape ships and getting mad at the rich assholes who take them for themselves.
John 5:1
Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals.
In which John describes the gang having a barbie and deciding to fix everything, John puppeting the President of the United States of America in exchange for “a couple billion dollars and a suitcase nuke”.
John 3:20
Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.
In which John describes how being the evil wizard isn’t fair, the FTL fleet wasn’t going to be ready, John starting a cult and becoming goth.
John 9:22
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders, who already had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Messiah would be put out of the synagogue.
In which John describes doing bone parthenogenesis, getting high off of violent death, killing a bunch of cops, and starting a skeleton army.
John 1:20
He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, “I am not the Messiah.”
In which John describes the trillionaires fucking up the FTL project even more, trying nuclear diplomacy, cultists turning on the gang, the nun killing herself to give John the secret of the soul, John killing everyone, making Alecto’s body, and killing everything in the solar system except for the escaping  FTL fleet.
John 5:4
From time to time an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up the waters. The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease they had.
(this verse is probably an interpolation, not present in the most reliable historic manuscripts, but is in the KJV. the NIV just has it in a footnote, and some editions omit it entirely)
In which John describes resurrecting his friends without their memories, talks with Harrow about God and the Tomb, and Harrow walks to the Tower in the River

People wouldn’t be freaking out over that old interview if we at least knew Gerard was no longer in contact with Jimmy. The fact we don’t know has some of us believing the worst
oof, i don’t think i can say anything to reassure you. at first i was expecting lindsey and gerard to drop everyone in msi and distance themselves as much as they could, but that did not happen at all. the most distancing i saw was lindsey taking msi out of her insta bio but still calling herself a bass player. and then i was thinking that maybe they have just done it privately and there was just no public indication but i no longer think that at all.
i think jimmy, chantal and the rest of msi have a whole lot of dirt on lindsey and if they are going down they are taking her with them. they may not be the friends they used to be, but they are all dependant on each other, the blackmail they have on each other keeps them bonded in that way. this is why lindsey was defending jimmy boldly on twitter, and why there is no reason to think her stance has changed. both to protect herself from the damage the rest of msi can do to her - we probably only know the tip of the ice berg when it comes to everyone in that band. but also to protect her own reputation of being a “musician”, and being part of msi has gotten her many opportunities. now with gerard. if i am throwing him a bone i would say that it is easy to be influenced by people you consider to be friends. especially when they are your source of information to that situation and they are gaslighting you, giving you every excuse in the book and a sob story. especially when you are dealing with mental health issues that make it hard to know what reality is. he’s only human. we all excuse a lot from the people in our lives.
but. . . i don’t know. his accounts still follow all of them. some crew members were shading about how great it is to spend time with your friends when mcr was touring nz (read as they didn’t meet up). lindsey didn’t come to nz. if he believes the lies, then he is the last person to know. if he knows. . .
gerard’s silence and being generally absent is what keeps him glowing in mcr fans minds.
and i believe that lindsey’s “cancellation” and msi’s court case have been great for gerard in the dynamics of his marriage. all of a sudden he has the upper hand and with lindsey playing the victim he gets to be the protector of a much more agreeable wife. hence the lindsey rebrand/apology without apologizing tour he turned the swarm tour into. i am thinking of collecting all the clips into one place just for the record, so it doesn’t disappear from fans collective memory. his wife clinging desperately to him is probably another ego boost for him in this time, along with the whole tour.
so i don’t know what to tell you, really. nothing here is worth jumping to conclusions, but what i see i don’t like.

JANUARY MEDIA ROUNDUP
Here's everything notable I watched/played/listened to in January yay!! All the yewchub videos and music are linked (and also there's spoilers for the ending to season 5 of Fargo). Let's a go!!
Tumblr media
SUPER MARIO RPG
Fun RPG! I see why it’s kept the reputation it has! I love Mario!!!
OLDER, SLOWER B/W EVERYTHING REAL IS FREE - GODDAMN WOLVES
I don’t know what changed with Seven Days a Week/Ah Maria but I’m really digging the latest Goddamn Wolves. I prefer the first song but the second one has a real Fountains of Wayne sound to it.
BARBIE
It’s fine, doesn’t live up to hype at all for me. Extremely hamfisted, shallow, babies first feminist message. Doesn’t seem to be interested in exploring anything deeper. The girl calls Barbie out when she first meets her for all the reductive views of women she represents and this never gets explored! The image of womanhood and femininity it represents is narrow and alienating for someone like me. White feminism at its peak.
IDK I guess it’s fine for preteens who are first being introduced to feminist thought, I probably would have liked it more at 11. But… can’t we do better now?
INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY
It’s fine I didn’t pay that much attention.  I liked Helena, I think she’s a good foil to the older Indiana Jones. There’s a lot of noticeable CGI and fake places and that made me sad. Half an hour too long.
Deepfake Harrison Ford is so scary
TASKMASTER CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS THREE
So fun and funny ^_^ I’ve been rewatching TM NZ with my parents and it’s good… but when you go back to UK you think “Why do I even watch the other versions, nothing could ever top this.”
They also announced the Series 17 line up! I only recognize Nick Mohammad from the couple episodes of Ted Lasso I watched.
BUBBLY - GOOD KID
Seems like everytime a new Good Kid comes out I think “this is good and awesome, their songs seem to keep getting better and better.” I think I am just a bigger Good Kid fan than I want to admit!!
FARGO - SEASON 5
Really good!! Lots of themes to dissect. I was mainly focusing on the theme of misogyny throughout but the finale brought in themes of religion and debt that I hadn’t thought about.
Very glad it stuck the landing in the finale. The ending scene was really funny, and thoughtful and sweet.
Going into the finale I knew they were going to give an ending to the character arc for Lorraine. I was worried that the fact that runs a debt collection agency was going to go uncommented on and thought “the only way I would come around fully to her character is if she forgives all the debt she owns.” The finale has her starting a fund to forgive the debt of prisoners specifically to fuck with the one guy she hates is 1. Very funny and 2. Perfect for her character.
PINOCCHIO IS A STORY ABOUT ART AND GOD - JACOB GELLER
The best video essays are the ones that make you want to gaze out of the window after watching, Jacob Geller consistently does it for me
Thinking about how there is an “other” component to Pinocchio. He’s a little wooden boy but not a “true” boy. Most stories end with Pinocchio becoming a “real boy.” Geller brings up how the story can be about being human, but at the same time becoming a real boy takes away the thing that’s special about him. A Pinocchio story about embracing his own difference and how that doesn’t make him any less of a real boy (because he was a real boy all along!) would make an easy trans metaphor.
Pinocchio also having to learn about the world from a lower baseline than other children seem to have (and being much more gullible) also makes an autism reading easy.
The comments are filled with people saying “You forgot about this story!” and “What about this reading?” that I think this video hit a lot of people the same way.
THE TRUTH ABOUT POINSETTIAS - INDIGO’S FINDINGS
that's a hell of a mystery no one thought was a mystery and didn't even really need solving but damn if it didn't just get solved so nice work
In all honesty, a really good deep dive about a tradition most of us take for granted.
MOONSONG / LAST BATTLE [NEW REMIX] - RADIATI0NAL
You can really hear the homestuck influence in this, I love it
Wish they were working with a bit better samples though
LA LA LAND
One of those movies that makes me go “Wow! This is a really well made movie! Must be amazing for someone who actually likes musicals, romance movies, and classic hollywood.”
SHE SENDS KISSES - THE WRENS
IT NEVER ENDS
Reminds me of the Fargo main theme, even though I don’t think they actually sound that similar? Might just be a me thing
TASKMASTER MINNESOTA - SEASON 2
Wah! I’ll miss you Taskmaster Minnesota!! Wah!!
Way better than last season thanks to the better equipment (I also think Carter makes a much better Taskmaster than Luke, though I think Luke was pretty good as a fill-in contestant!)
David Ha (and whoever else) is extremely good at making up tasks. Multiple tasks that made me think “they should do this on Taskmaster UK!” or use the setting so well it’s perfect
DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: THE DARK PRINCE
Monsters…
The performance is BAD, the environment textures are BAD, the story is BAD, but those monsters? But those monsters.. Those monsters are damn good
The end ended up being pretty grind-y, I think dragon quest games are known for that, but still a bit of a bummer way to end what I thought was a pretty fun game!
The gameplay loop of synthesis is addicting, every new area feels like an iceberg where beneath the surface are all the new monsters you can make in synthesis!
The ranking system also pushes you to change your team throughout the game to add those higher ranking monsters to your team. One of my problems with pokemon is how the game starts to grow stale once you have a full team. Dragon quest monsters and Yo-Kai watch both side step this problem and keeps the gameplay fresh to the end!
I’m curious about playing the older entries now!
My favorite monster is every slime and Imp
LEAST FAVORITE THING: When Jacob Geller brought AI: Artificial Intelligence in his Pinocchio video and I had to remember how much I hated that movie. We watched in Philosophy class. We didn't even discuss it, we just watched it.

So Argentina is a colonial state, does that also apply that to all of Latin America? Or is Argentina uniquely bad compared to Bolivia where a large part of the country is Indigenous and the average person has big connections to Indigenous culture. I know they both came up because of colonization but I am not the most informed on Latin America as a French person. I know, EW. What really makes a country I guess i what I am asking. And in what ways to these Latin American countries benefit from their colonialism? Like if Argentina is the same as England how so? Why is it poor like the rest of Latin America? What makes Latin America different but also the same? Do they get treated like western countries in world politics (just Argentina maybe?? TBH I dont know a lot about Argentina)? I am so confused on everything but I want to learn.
There is... no I way can come remotely close to answering all of this, so I'm going to only answer the parts I feel I'm informed enough to answer.
What makes a country a colonialist power? How do colonialist powers benefit from their colonialism?
This is a lot and a very controversial question that there's no definitive answer to. but imo, a colonialist country is one whose government has a history of systematic exploitation and genocide against a minority group, particularly if that history is after the mid 15th century and the minority is considered somehow foreign to the majority. all of this applies solidly to Argentina the same way it does the US, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia: large populations of European settlers came from overseas, displaced the natives, and exploited African slave labor. The Argentine government (both under Spanish rule and upon independence), like the US, Canadian, and Australian governments (idk NZ's history but wouldn't put it by them either), have a history of conscious eradication efforts against the targeted minorities. Argentina benefits from its colonialism the exact same way the US et al do: more land, free labor, general racist sentiment (since even recently they're still dealing with significant white supremacist nationalist and they're not fringe groups either).
What makes Argentina different but also same as countries like Bolivia?
I'm not informed enough to speak for Bolivia but I'd take a wild guess that, unlike Argentina and the US, its majority population probably didn't come over from Europe after the mid 15th century, and that that majority population was or still is exploited by a smaller, more powerful minority (foreign or not), rather than the majority population exploiting a minority. That's what I would assume but, again, I'm not informed about Bolivia.
Why is Argentina poor?
I don't know that I'd describe them as poor by global standards; they're about in the same bracket as Poland, Romania etc, which is juuuuuust above the world average. In any case Argentina's economy used to be very strong! And then it started having some economic struggles, as countries often do, which were magnified when their military junta made the BRILLIANT decision to distract their people from it by starting a war. With Britain. Over the Falklands. Which it had held between August 1829 to January 1833 (barring a month where the US just....... dissolved the Falklands government for some reason?????? what in the fucking world--). Anyway.
Is Argentina treated like the West?
In what way? How are you defining West in this particular context? Economically, culturally, or Cold War alignment? Etc.
Because in most ways I'd say yes, with a caveat: Argentina is a regional power, and their region is very very isolated; recall that the southern hemisphere is inhabited by only 10%-12% of the world population, and Argentina is particularly far south. So really it just depends what context, what countries, what time period, etc. For example, the US is going to see Argentina VERY differently than eg France, because Argentina is in the Western hemisphere where US influence is dominant (and domineering). But countries like, say, Mongolia probably don't have much of an opinion at all on Argentina. There's also the fact that most USAmericans simply know next to nothing about Argentina anyway, but frequently treat all of Latin America as non-West due to Cold War ties.
What makes Latin America different but also same [from Argentina]?
Sorry, I sorta answered this but because I'm not 100% sure what you're asking, I'm gonna answer it again in case I misinterpreted your question.
So, some definitions:
Latin America: cultural grouping defined by countries in the Americas where the main languages are languages that derived from Vulgar Latin (ie Spanish, French, and Portuguese, but not German etc). So that's Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador, Brazil, Argentina, Haiti etc etc etc but not the US or Canada. I'm really not sure why Canada's Québécois population doesn't count but Haiti's does? Weird
South America: a geographical term describing a continent defined by the Colombia-Panama border; everything on Colombia's side is South America....
Central America: .... And Panama's side marks the Central Americas from Panama up to Mexico, which is not part of Central America.
North America (1): as a continent, everything north of the Colombia-Panama border, including the Caribbean, up to the Arctic Circle.
North America (2): a subgrouping of North America that isn't very consistent because sometimes it includes Mexico and sometimes it doesn't. I've personally always seen it used as including Mexico and the Caribbean but some people use it just for the US, Canada, Greenland, Bermuda, and Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Idk there or why anyone wouldn't include Mexico.
Help.
